Title: The Machel Cedenio Thread
Post by: behind-de-bridge on May 30, 2011, 11:53:44 PM
Cant believe the times this 15 yo kid running for 400M. All he needs now is a good coach and to remain focus and he will surely be a main contender in the seniors in a few years time.

Yeah. I say by next year he will be competing against the seniors. 46.96 at 15 years old...He is on pace to reach 45 by the age of 18. He will surely challenge KJ in the future.

Actually that 44 point only came this year at age 18/19
At 15 he had the identical PR as Machel - 46.96, and Machel eh done for de year yet
However 45.24 at 17 is beastly

Prodigies have the odds AGAINST them in this sport. For every Bolt, Felix and Richards-Ross, there are 100 who never even got close to making it.

Yeah but there is no harm in being overly supportive and optimistic when a burgeoning talent comes along - look how you and Bolt turned out.

As long as we manage expectations and where possible jump in when guidance is sought, chances are our love for track can actually end up making a positive difference in an athlete's development. After all we are Trinbagonians, we born optimistic.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - Double Carifta Champion Machel Cedenio will lead an eight member national contingent to the 7th IAAF World Youth (under 18) Track and Field Championships in Lille, France, from July 6 to 11.

Cedenio was selected for the boys 400m. The 15 year old Southern Academy student is one of two local athletes who are ranked in the top ten in the world in the team. Cedenio is at 10th in the one lap sprint after he clocked 46.96 seconds at the Quantum Classic on May 28 at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.  At this year’s Carifta Games in Jamaica in April the Quantum athlete sped to victory in the boys under 17 200 (21.43) and 400m (47.38). In the one lap race he missed out Usain Bolt’s record by 0.05 seconds.

Great start for Machel - just won his heat in 47.32, a time that would have broken Bolt's Carifta U-17 400m record. He needs to improve his start response time though, walked out the blocks.

Looking at the IAAF WY 400m boy's standings, he is the only boy born in 1995 (currently still 15 years old) in the rankings. All others are born in 1994 and are months if not more than a year older, impressive!!

Now on a very serious note...what about Brown Ato?  The man does have a silver at World's.....!  He was a Jr. record holder and if not for injuries and very BAD decisions by him and his management team, he might have been something special today....what yuh think?  And I am not asking this for the dummies who sing his praises as if he is some world beater today...cuz that he ain't.

Having looked at the race, MC first half was too slow. In fact he fact he was last with 100m to go. Now he is in the big league with athletes outside the caribbean, he will learn from this experience. Mind you, 46.89 as a 15yr is fantastic.

Machel Cedenio celebrating his 400m victory

Carifta champions Machel Cedenio and Andwuelle Wright are among seven T&T athletes who ranked in the top ten in the world in their events. Cedenio (Simplex) is at number four on the men’s junior (Under-20) 400-metres performance listing following his 45.93 personal best (pb) clocking in striking gold at the Carifta Games in the Bahamas on March 30. Cedenio also ran 45.99 to take the TnT Elite Twilight Games men’s one-lap title on May 3.

Triple Carifta medallist Jereem Richards (Abilene Wildcats) is eighth with a pb run of 46.20 seconds in finishing third behind Cedenio at the TnT Elite Games. Richards is also eighth in the 200m (20.95). John-Mark Constantine (Concorde) is seventh-quickest in the men’s 100m after he dashed to 10.38 (pb) to win at the Carifta trials on March 2. Constantine’s run was more impressive as he ran into a 3.4m/s headwind.

Double Carifta bronze medallist Reubin Walters (Memphis Pioneers) sits at ninth in the men’s 110m hurdles (99.0cm) with a pb time of 13.66 set at the Falcon Games on March 24. In the World Youth (U-18) standing, 2012/2013 Carifta gold medallist Andwuelle Wright (Signal Hill Secondary) is seventh in the boys long jump with his 7.29 distance which he set in retaining his boys U-17 Carifta title earlier this year. Last year’s Carifta boys U-17 200m champion Jonathan Farinha (Abilene Wildcats) is at fourth in the boys 200m with 21.10 pb dash at the first day of action at the Falcons Games on March 23.

Kayelle Clarke is the lone female on the global listings. The Petrotrin Palo Seco sprinter is at sixth in the world youth 200m after she returned a time of 23.76 in finishing sixth in the girls under-20 200m finals at the Carifta Games.
Title: I still don't understand why we won't give Machel Cedenio his chance to shine!
Post by: Socapro on August 18, 2013, 02:26:01 PM
We carried him to the Olympics last year 2012 and benched him (I am willing to overlook last year because we medalled) and now we carry him to the World Champs this year 2013 and benched him yet again.  :-\

I am now wondering if Cedenio was ill or injured or something?
This World Champs would have been the perfect opportunity to allow the youth to prove that he is now a man and can handle the responsibility just like what the Jamaicans did with Javon Francis his big rival from his recent junior 400m days who Cedenio has beaten on a few occasions.

So the question now beckons, do we see Machel Cedenio as one of our future 400m stars or not?!

This is why the Jamaicans can excel so consistently because they are prepared to give their talented youths a chance to shine like how they threw Javon Francis in at the deep end and he floated beautifully to help deliver them a 4x400m silver medal.
We can learn so much from the Jamaicans where athletics is concerned.
Why bench one of your most talented youngsters especially when more that one of your senior runners are spent/burnt out and clearly not up to par?

Now here is a reminder of how a spent and out of form Lalonde Gordon was placed in a position to messed up our vital 2nd leg and lost us a possible medal while the talented youth Cedenio who could have done a much better job was forced to sit on the bench because as folks want to argue he don't have the senior experience.

Well how on earth is Cedenio meant to get his much needed senior experience then if he is regularly to be brought along for the ride because he qualified to be on the squad but is still left on the bench when some of the seniors are clearly not up to par for one reason or the other?

Here is Javon Francis and the Jamaicans celebrating after the 4x400m relay final.

Jamaica 4x4 team celebrates silver medal
http://www.youtube.com/v/7jU4xVjdBlI
Jamaica 4x4 team celebrates silver medal. Calabar High schoolboy Javon Francis was Jamaica's star. The Jamaican team, which also included Rusheen McDonald, Edino Steele and Omar Johnson, stopped the clock in a season best 2:59.88 behind USA, anchored by LaShawn Merritt, 2:58.71, a world leading time.

>>>>>>

Now imagine if Cedenio was given his chance how our team could possibly have been celebrating alongside the Jamaicans too and could even have won a silver and not just a bronze medal in the 4x400m Relay.

This was a big opportunity wasted in my eyes to baptize Cedenio and to announce his arrival on the senior stage as a 400m runner as well as to bring home an extra medal.  :pissedoff:
I hope our team management learn from this. Give the youths a chance especially if the seniors are performing below par!

Been chiming on this since last year. It's time to let the stallion out of the stable.

Next year he has Penn Relays, CAC Seniors, World Relay Champs (Bahamas), Commonwealth Games to show his mettle.

Caution: He needs to improve his running posture by running taller to control how his leg rotates outward when he runs, striking with the ball of his feet instead of his heel when he strides, and experimenting by going out a little faster in the first 200m to better balance his race, instead of leaving it so late every time. While that strategy works against juniors that will no longer work when he moves up and mixes it up with the big boys.

His competition from Carifta, World Youth and World Juniors have moved on and are benefitting from increased strength and "big boy" experience - Javon Francis (45.19/44.0 split), Arman Hall (44.8x) and Stephen Newbold (44.2 split at Penn Relays).

A dose of private sector sponsorship FROM NOW (not later) would be nice if someone can get it into their heads to help athletes on their way UP.

Yeah, we need more people that are willing to give their financial support to our athletes from the earlies when it is most needed rather than the wagonist behaviour that seems to be popular after success has been achieved.

What he needs is a chance to show what training under kirani's coach's  direction has done for him .... He has consistently faster times than Jehue Gordon all season ...so go figure ..

Just in case anyone missed the result of the national champs this year here is the result for the 400 metres men

This competition served to select the teams to represent us at the worlds.. Cedenio was first reserve according to the results ...so I take it he must have been ill or injured to have been omitted by the coaching staff.

Good point but I wasn't aware that Cedenio was training full time in Greenz.
Maybe its time to bring him back home and put him back on his line of progression.

His trip to Grenada was reported in the papers earlier this year, but it was a short stint before the Carifta Games that he mentioned was very helpful, and well we saw the results of that. So maybe he needs to go to Grenada more often, or stay in T&T and train with Jehue so they both benefit.

We all need clarification from time to time, myself included:
FROM THE GUARDIAN February, 2012 (I was off by a year), so who knows I may be wrong!!

Cedenio gears up in Grenada

Double junior CARIFTA gold medallist Machel Cedenio is undergoing a two-week training stint in Grenada in preparation for his track and field season. Cedenio, who won the boys under-17 200m and 400m double at the CARIFTA Games in Montego Bay, Jamaica last year, has been training with the Gouyave-based Speed Zone Track Club at the Cuthbert Peters' Park with the club coach Albert Joseph. Joseph was coach of 2011 World Championships 400m gold medallist Grenadian Kirani James.

In 2011 Cedenio just missed a medal at the World Youth Championships in Lille, France last July, finishing fourth in a personal best of 46.89 seconds (a national under-17 record) and then anchored the national boys medley relay team to sixth. Cedenio also won silver in the CARIFTA boys under-17 4x100 and 4X100 relays and was part of T&T’s 2011 Pan American Junior Championships men’s 4x400 silver medal winning team. The Southern Academy student is a member of the local Quantum Athletic Club under head coach Trevor James.

The lanky sprinter won the men’s 100m (11.02) and was second in the 200m (22.24) and this year’s NAAA Fourth Development meet at the Ato Boldon Stadium on February 11.

Ok cool!
We will have to get an updated report on Cedenio to confirm if he has been training most of his time this year in Grenada then.
Whatever the scenario some of his junior rivals like Javon Francis from Jamaica have progressed this year much faster than Cedenio has.

When cock get teeth!!!

As grown men and women, many of us may now have former school friends in high places (Marketing Directors, CEOs, Managing Directors, etc) whether at home or abroad.

So with the right level of persuasion in business terms (win-win) it is not impossible to convince someone who is a decision-maker with a budget in a large organization to make the investment. Someone who may also have reason to trust your judgment as a friend.

Check your network and try to help out a few of these young stars nah? That way they won't have to take a chance and go to the US if they don't really want to, but develop right at home.

We Trinis by nature are copycats, so if one sets a trend by making an investment that works out, others will follow. It just takes one influential business leader with an open mind, who may have been involved in sports in the past, or currently as a hobby (triathlons, hashing, etc).

FORT-DE-FRANCE— Trinidadian sprinter Machel Cedenio has become the latest in a long list of Caribbean athletes to link up with the Lance Brauman training group.

Following his Under-20 boys 400m victory at the CARIFTA Games here on Saturday night, Cedenio confirmed he was working with Brauman, who has over the years conditioned the likes of Jamaicans Veronica Campbell-Brown and Nickel Ashmeade and Trinidad & Tobago’s Kelly-Ann Baptiste.

“I am training in Florida now, working with Lance Brauman,” said Cedenio.

Brauman has also coached former World sprint champion, American Tyson Gay.

Cedenio broke the news about his link with Brauman when he was asked about his new running style, now highlighted by his faster than usual start.

“When you are in a new program your new coach would normally change up things a little bit,” he said in reference to his improved start.

Cedenio won his age group 400 metres final in 45.95 seconds, to beat Jamaica’s Nathon Allen into second and fellow Trinidadian Asa Guevara into third.

“I felt good, but I would have done better with a little more competition,” he said.

“This is my last Carifta, so I just came here to have fun. I wasn’t a 100 per cent coming in, but I got the victory and I am happy for that.”

Cedenio’s main goal, however, is the World Junior Championships in Eugene, United States in July.

He was a finalist at the last World Junior Championships in Barcelona two years ago.

Machel Cedenio

World Junior champion Machel Cedenio ended his junior (under 20) campaign as the world’s top 400m junior sprinter for 2014.

Despite racing sparingly due to injury, the lanky Point Fortin resident set world leading times almost every time he stepped on the track. He started his year by racing the first of his world leading times when he clocked 45.95 to retain his Carifta boys Under-20 400m title in Martinique in April.

Cedenio’s next run was even better when he won the Cayman Islands Invitational men’s one lap event on May 7 against his seniors, lowering his world leading time to 45.23 and also breaking the national junior mark of 45.74 set by Renny Quow in 2006.

The six-time Carifta champion came close to a new national mark when he took the CAC Junior crown in 45.28. He went to the 2014 World Juniors Champs in Eugene, Orgeon, USA in July as the overwhelming favourite and duly delivered with a dominant run to capture the gold medal in yet another world-leading and national junior clocking of 45.13. Cedenio’s winning time pushed the Florida-based sprinter up to joint 21st on the all-time junior lists along with triple Olympic gold medalist and five-time World champion Jeremy Wariner of the USA.

His 45.13 clocking is also the 33rd best for the year in the senior rankings. In addition to holding the fastest time on the planet, the Presentation College, San Fernando graduate has four of the six quickest clockings for the year and has dipped under the 46 second barrier on seven occasions over the last twelve months.

Cedenio showed his world-class potential two years earlier when he was fifth at the 2012 World Juniors finals as a 16 year old. That year, he also qualified for this country’s Olympic team as a reserve on the men’s 4x400m team and ended the season as the top Youth quarter-miler for 2012 again dominating the rankings with eight of the top ten times.

Cedenio is the lone T&T athlete ranked in the top ten on the latest IAAF World Junior rankings. However, he anchored the Carifta’s boys Under-20 4x400m team, which included Asa Guevara, Breon Mullings and Nathan Farinha to victory to the fourth best time in the world (3:06.02).

Triple World Junior finalist Jonathan Farinha is the next best placed local at 11th in the men’s 100m standings. Fellow World Junior finalists Reubin Walters (men’s 110m hurdles-99cm) and Shakeil Waithe (men’s javelin) are at 13th in their events.

Farinha sits outside the top ten in the men’s sprint with his personal best (pb) run of 10.25 which he set in winning the national junior title at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, on May 31.

John-Mark Constantine is at 25th with a pb of 10.35 which he established in finishing runner-up to Farinha at the National Junior Champs. Farinha is at 16th in the men’s 200m following another personal run of 20.68 set in taking the National Junior half lap crown. At the World Juniors the QRC student was eighth in the 100m and 200m finals and led the men’s 4x100m team of Constantine, Holland Cabara, Micah Ballantyne and Akanni Hislop to sixth place in the finals.

Walters was 13th in the men’s sprints hurdles finals in a pb of 13.52. The final was a historic one as the winner, Wilhem Belocian of France, took the gold in a new world junior record of 12.99 with Jamaican Tyler Mason in second in 13.06 (also under the previous world junior mark).

Walters is also at 29th in the men’s 400m hurdles with a pb run of 51.46 at the Twightlight Games at the Hasely Crawford on May 02. Waithe, the Carifta and CAC Junior Champion, sits at number 13 on the men’s javelin listing with his pb throw of 72.75 in taking the national open title on June 22.

Among the women, Zakiya Denoon is the best ranked at 15th in the women’s 100m with her 11.41 pb clocking in capturing the national junior title on May 31. Aaliyah Telesford is at 23rd with 11.47 while Carifta girls under 20 champion Kayelle Clarke is 25th in the women’s half lap event with 23.44. Denoon, Telesford, Clarke combined with Maurica Preito to clocked the third fastest time in the world in the women’s 4x100m running 44.23 to take the CAC Junior gold. The quartet missed out on a medal at the World Juniors finished fourth.

Cedenio, Denoon and Waithe are the top junior performers in their events in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) region. Walters and Nicholas Landeau (1:49.51) are at two in the sprint hurdles and the men’s 800m respectively. Kayelle Clarke is third in the women’s 200m. Jonathan Farinha is at number three in the 100m and five in the 200. Akila McShine (13.80-pb) is fifth in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Aaron Lewis (13.85 sec-pb) and Portious Warren (14.47m-pb) sit at sixth in the men’s sprints hurdles and the women’s shot put respectively. In the men’s shot put Shervorne Worrell (16.22m) and Kenejah Williams (16.06m) are eighth and ninth respectively. While in the discus Williams is at 12th (47.17m) and Worrell 20th (45.81).

In the World Youth (Under 18) rankings, two time Carifta and CAC Junior long jump champion Andwuelle Wright is the top rated T&T competitor at 17th in the boys long jump with a pb of 7.42m set in taking third at the Hampton Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on May 17.

Youth Olympic finalist Jeminise Parris is at 18th on the girls 100m hurdles (76.2cm) performance list. Parris clocked 13.62 sec (pb) in the heats of the Youth Olympics in Nanjing China on Aug 20 before finished fifth in the finals three days later in 13.76. Youth Olympic Games boys 200m fourth place finisher Akanni Hislop missed on a place on the rankings. The 16 year old clocked 21.28 sec in the heats of the men’s 200m at this year’s National Championships and when on to capture the B finals beating the field despite being the youngest.

FAST STARTS: T&T sprinters, Richard "Torpedo" Thompson, left, and Keston Bledman.

Richard “Torpedo” Thompson, Keston Bledman and Machel Cedenio recorded fast openers at meets in the United States, on Saturday.
Competing in the 100 metres dash for the first time this season, Thompson stopped the clock at 10.04 seconds for victory in section one at the Alumni Gold meet, in Louisiana.

With that clocking, Thompson shot into second spot on the 2015 world performance list, behind American Trayvon Bromell (10.02). Another Trinidad and Tobago athlete, Texas State University student Aaron George was seventh in section two and 14th overall in the Alumni Gold men’s 100m in a wind-assisted 10.64.

Thompson had a busy day at the Alumni Gold meet, finishing fifth in the 200m in a windy 21.01 seconds, and running the second leg for third-placed Tiger Olympians in the 4x100m relay. Thompson’s team clocked 40.03.

Steve Waithe was also in winners’ row in Louisiana. Appropriately, the T&T/Pennsylvania State University athlete struck gold in the LeJuan Simon men’s triple jump event with a wind-aided 15.73m effort. Waithe’s best legal jump in the competition was 15.45m.

Simon was a T&T athlete, the highpoint of his career coming in 2004 when he represented the country at the Athens Olympics. The former Louisiana State University (LSU) student died in 2008 at the age of 27 as a result of complications from primary pulmonary hypertension.

At the National Training Center (NTC) Pure Athletics Sprint Elite Meet 1, in Florida, Bledman bolted to victory in the men’s 100m dash in a windy 9.94 seconds. In the preliminary round, the T&T sprinter clocked a windy 9.97 in his first 100m race for 2015. He won the heat, advancing to the final as the fastest qualifier.

400m World Junior Champ Machel Cedenio opens with new PB.

Cedenio was on fire in his 400m season-opener, the 2014 world junior champion winning the men’s one-lap race in a personal best 45.09 seconds—good enough for sixth spot on the 2015 world performance list.

Kelly-Ann Baptiste got home in a wind-assisted 22.91 seconds to bag bronze in the women’s 200m. And Wayne Davis II topped the men’s 110m hurdles “B” race in 13.66.

In Texas, Deon Lendore clocked 45.14 seconds to grab gold in the Michael Johnson Classic men’s 400m event. The Texas A&M University quartermiler is seventh on this year’s world performance list.

Another T&T athlete, Janeil Bellille finished eighth in the women’s 400m in 55.08.

At the Georgia Tech Invitational, Emanuel Mayers won the men’s 400m hurdles in 50.39 seconds, and Ade Alleyne-Forte was second in the men’s 400m “B” race in 47.59.

World Junior 400m champion Machel Cedenio after setting new PB at Cayman Invitational

Machel Cedenio marked his admission to the sub-45 club with a tremendous display of one-lap sprinting at the Cayman Invitational, in George Town, Grand Cayman, on Saturday night.

Cedenio produced a jaw-dropping 44.36 seconds run for a commanding victory in the men's 400 metres event. With that clocking, the 19-year-old quartermiler joined Deon Lendore in second spot on the all-time Trinidad and Tobago list.

Only national record holder Ian Morris has run faster. But with Lendore running 44.41 on Saturday afternoon, and Cedenio going five-hundredths of a second faster less than four hours later, Morris' 23-year-old T&T standard of 44.21 seconds could be under serious threat this season.

Cedenio, the 11th T&T athlete to join the sub-45 club, is now second on the 2015 world performance list, behind Grenadian world-leader Kirani James (44.22). Lendore is in third spot.

Ahead of the Cayman Invitational, Cedenio was 12th on the all-time T&T men's 400m list at 45.09. In 44.36 seconds, the Florida-based athlete leapfrogged nine quality quartermilers, including 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon (44.52), who slips to fourth, and 1964 Olympic silver medallist Wendell Mottley (44.82), who is down to seventh.

On Saturday, Cedenio successfully defended his Cayman Invitational title, breaking his 45.23 seconds meet record in the process. The 2014 world junior champion was unchallenged for gold, Jamaican Javon Francis finishing a distant second in 45.54 seconds. Bronze went to American Aldrich Bailey in 45.63.

T&T's Josanne Lucas was fifth in the women's 100m hurdles in 13.76 seconds. Romona Modeste clocked 54.47 for sixth spot in the women's 400m. And Jonathan Farinha, competing on his 19th birthday, finished seventh in the men's 200m in 21.21.

In Florida, Kelly-Ann Baptiste was the fastest sprinter on show in the Pure Athletics Sprint Elite Meet 2 women's 100m preliminaries. The 2011 World Championship bronze medallist topped heat one in 11 seconds flat, but did not face the starter in the final.

In the 200m event, Baptiste earned bronze in a wind-assisted 23.05 seconds.

Deborah John won the women's 100m hurdles "B" final in a wind-aided 13.56 seconds. Her 13.52 preliminary round run was also windy.

And Mikel Thomas clocked 13.50 seconds to secure fourth spot in the men's 110m hurdles final.

At yesterday's Shanghai Diamond League meet, in China, T&T track star Michelle-Lee Ahye finished third in the women's 100m dash in 11.13 seconds. Among the sprinters Ahye beat to the line were Jamaican Olympic champions, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Campbell-Brown was fourth in 11.22, while Fraser-Pryce was fifth in 11.25.

Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare won in 10.98 seconds, while second spot went to American Tori Bowie (11.07).

T&T thrower Cleopatra Borel produced an 18.32 metres effort to finish sixth in the women's shot put. China's Gong Lijiao topped the field with a world-leading 20.23m throw.

Renny Quow finished eighth in the men's 400m, the T&T quartermiler getting home in 46.65 seconds. James emerged victorious in the one-lap race, the Grenadian world-leader stopping the clock at 44.66. Americans Tony McQuay (45.54) and LaShawn Merritt (45.58) were second and third, respectively.

Late on Saturday, Kayelle Clarke earned more precious metal at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, in Kansas, USA.

Clarke, who won the women's 100m title earlier in the day, added 200m bronze. The New Mexico Junior College sprinter produced a wind-assisted 24.30 seconds run. Western Texas College student, Marissa Gale was seventh in 24.76.

South Plains College athlete, Jereem Richards, winner of the men's 400m title, finished fourth in the 200m final in 21.16 seconds.

South Plains won the men's and women's team titles.

Theon Lewis claimed bronze in the California Community College State Championship men's 400m event. Lewis clocked 47.67 seconds, while his College of the Sequoias teammate and fellow-T&T athlete, Ohdel James got home in 47.78 to finish fourth. In the 200m, Lewis was fifth in 21.68 seconds.

In Texas, Reyare Thomas grabbed gold in the Hardin-Simmons Twilight meet women's 200m event. The T&T sprinter completed the half-lap race in 23.92 seconds.

At the Hoka One One Distance Classic, in California, Jamaal James finished seventh in the men's 800m "B" race in one minute, 52.83 seconds.

And two Saturdays ago, at the Occidental Invitational, in California, Magnolia Howell clocked 54.37 seconds for fifth spot in the women's 400m.

Machel Cedenio right setting new 400m PB of 44.36 at 2015 Cayman Invitational

Trinidad and Tobago’s Machel Cedenio tore up the tracks at the Truman Bodden Stadium in George Town, Cayman Islands, on Saturday, when he blazed to an impressive sub-45 victory in the Men’s 400m event at the Cayman Invitational.

The reigning World Junior 400m champion clocked a speedy 44.36 seconds to retain his crown in fine style, and in the process, recorded his fastest time for the 2015 season thus far by significantly improving from his 45.09s performance in April (Florida). Additionally, Cedenio also became the second fastest 400m man in the world for 2015 as he instantly shot up the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) senior outdoor rankings. The youngster now sits just ahead of compatriot Deon Lendore (Texas A&M), who trails closely behind on the IAAF rankings in third place following his golden showing (44.41s) at the Southeastern Championships (SEC) in Mississippi on Saturday. The TT pair trail obvious leader and world record holder, Kirani James (44.22s) who has been the fastest this year.

Cedenio’s golden run also saw him set a new meet record, removing his own 2014 clocking of 45.23s. Following his Cayman triumph, Cedenio was startled with his overall time. He said after, that he was expecting a faster time, (than his season best) but not 44.

https://www.youtube.com/v/ZV1fqHMzKCc

“I wasn’t expecting to run that fast,” he explained. “My coach was like, ‘it’s your second 400m of the season, so just pretend it’s practice and go out there and execute a good race,’” the former Carifta Games champion added.

“Both my coaches were shocked, they were like, ‘I told you to go out there and run 45.5 and you come back with 44.3’, it just happened,” said an elated Cedenio. Jamaican Jovan Francis (45.54s) settled for silver while American Aldrich Bailey (45.63s) finished third.

At the meet, this country was also represented by sprinters Romona Modeste (400m), Jameel Joseph (400m hurdles), Josanne Lucas (100m hurdles) and Jonathan Farinha (200m) but non were able to secure a podium place.

Modeste placed sixth (54.47s) in the Women’s 400m while Joseph was seventh (56.56s) in the hurdles. Lucas also finished fifth (13.76s) and Farinha (21.21s) seventh.

Had some free time and decided to play with MS Excel.
Interesting factoids to note and take notice how great Machel Cedenio is and hopefully will progress to become:

44.36 is the tied 200th fastest time ever recorded in the 400m as of last weekend.

Of all 400m sprinters who have run 44.36 or faster,
here are the youngest by age through age 22, that they first achieved 44.36 or faster:

18 years, 11 months - Kirani James - 44.36
19 years, 2 months - Steve Lewis - 44.11 (note Lewis ran 43.87 2 months later)
19 years, 11 months - Machel Cedenio - 44.36
20 years, 2 months - Lashawn Merritt - 44.34
20 years, 7 months - Jeremy Wariner - 44.00
20 years, 10 months - Larry James - 44.19A
21 years, 3 months - Roberto Hernandez - 44.22A
21 years, 5 months - Derrick Brew - 44.29
21 years, 7 months - Lee Evans - 44.06A
21 years, 7 months - Deon Lendore - 44.36
21 years, 7 months - Danny Everett - 44.34
21 years, 8 months - Antonio Pettigrew - 44.27
21 years, 9 months - Jerome Young - 44.19
21 years, 11 months - Quincy Watts - 44.00
21 years, 11 months - Tyree Washington - 44.29

All of the above have been Olympic or World 400m and/or 4x400m champions or medallists (with a few obvious disqualifications - Young and Pettigrew).

Pretty impressive company nevertheless (Kirani James and Steve Lewis are the only others to achieve this time before their 20th birthday), which augers well for both Machel and Deon Lendore.

Of note, Michael Johnson first broke 44.36 at age 22 years, 11 months running 44.25 in 1990.

One correction: Machel Cedenio was born on 6th September 1995 so he is 19 years, 8 months for the age he first ran 44.36 and not 19 years, 11 months.
Machel Cedenio will be 19 years & 11 months this coming August when he runs in Beijing (God willing).

Machel Cedenio has his sights set on men's 4x400 metres gold at the August 22-30 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.

Trinidad and Tobago's 4x4 squad is also expected to include Deon Lendore, 2012 Olympic 400m bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon, 2009 World Championship 400m bronze medallist Renny Quow, and Jarrin Solomon.

"We can look forward to the gold," Cedenio declared, in a Sportsmax cable television interview, on Tuesday. "Everybody is sub-45. I don't see why we shouldn't go out there and attack the gold. It's a pretty solid team.

"Once I go on the track, my mission is always to win gold. Once we put a strong team together, everybody communicates, and we have the team chemistry, we can go out there and win gold."

At the tender age of 19, Cedenio is already joint-fifth on the all-time Caribbean men's 400m performance list.

On Saturday, Cedenio clocked a personal best 44.36 seconds for a runaway victory at the Cayman Invitational. With that run, he jumped into joint-second on the all-time T&T list, alongside Lendore and behind national record holder Ian Morris (44.21).

"Basically, I just went out there and did my best. I did everything my coach told me to do. I went out there for the win. I know I've been running fast in practice. I was working out hard, killing all my workouts, and just went out there and did what I had to do. I just went out there and had fun.

"This is only my second open 400 for the season," Cedenio continued. "Coming here and dropping almost a second off my PB (personal best) is.

"We're just taking it step by step. Everything is in the hands of God. I just pray every day, and thank God for coming out there and running a PB."

Cedenio, Lendore and Great Britain's Iwan Thomas are tied for 38th on the all-time world list at 44.36.

Just four Caribbean quartermilers are ahead of Cedenio and Lendore.

Reigning Olympic champion Kirani James is the fastest-ever one-lap sprinter from this part of the world, the Grenadian boasting a personal best of 43.74 seconds for sixth spot overall. Cuban Roberto Hernandez is second best among Caribbean runners at 44.14.

Next on the list is Morris with his 23-year-old T&T record of 44.21 seconds. Cuba's 1976 400/800 Olympic champion, Alberto Juantorena is fourth on the all-time Caribbean list at 44.26.

Cedenio and Lendore are joint-fifth. Evergreen Bahamian Chris Brown and Jamaican Jermaine Gonzales are joint-seventh at 44.40 seconds. Bahamian Avard Moncur and Dominican Republic's Luguelin Santos, meanwhile, round off the top 10. They are tied for ninth at 44.45.

Machel Cedenio, Lashawn Merritt and Luguelin Santos will clash in Ponce Grand Prix 400m

Track and field fans, at this time of the season, should be willing to do whatever it takes to see Lashawn Merritt, Luguelin Santos and Machel Cedenio face-off.

These three, Merritt, who is the World Champion, as well as Santos, Olympic Games silver medallist, and Cedenio, the respective World Junior champion and second fastest man with 44.36 in 2015, will clash on Saturday at the Ponce Grand Prix Meeting here in Puerto Rico.

American Merritt season best is 44.80 and Santos, whose 45.28 is off the sub-45 barrier, should make chasing 19-year-old Cedenio in the men’s 400m the highlight of the Ninth staging of the Ponce Grand Prix.

Cedenio who opened his season with a personal best 45.09 at a small meet in Florida, but surprised himself with 44.36 at the Cayman Invitational on May 16, is the man to watch.

However, Merritt is a world-class athlete, and even though his season best stands at 44.80, can take down any field on any given day. Santos, on the other hand, is running himself into form.

Add to that line-up former World and Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner, who was instrumental in USA’s 4x400m victory in the Bahamas earlier this month.

Machel Cedenio & Keston Bledman each pose for winner's photo after competing at Ponce 2015.

THE TRINIDAD and Tobago duo of Machel Cedenio and Keston Bledman took gold in the men’s 400 metres and men’s 100m respectively on Saturday night at the Ponce Grand Prix in Puerto Rico.

Cedenio, the 2014 World Junior Championships gold medallist, set a personal best time of 44.36 a week earlier at the Cayman Invitational Meet — the second fastest time for the year thus far.

And the 19-year-old proved that his effort on May 16 was no fluke when he defeated a tough field, which included World Champion LaShawn Merritt, ex-World and Olympic gold medallist Jeremy Wariner and Olympic silver medallist Luguelin Santos.

In lane six, Cedenio established an early lead after 200 metres and he maintained his advantage over his rivals to cross the line in 44.97 seconds.

Merritt, who accelerated on the home stretch, got silver in 45.42 while Gustavo Cuesta of Dominican Republic finished third in 45.89.

Bledman has also started off his 2015 season in good form, having finished third in the men’s 100m at the first IAAF Diamond League meeting in Doha, Qatar on May 15.

On Saturday night, Bledman ran a slow 10.17 seconds to emerge victorious, followed by Harry Adams of the United States and Antoine Adams of St Kitts/Nevis.

Both Adams crossed the line in 10.25, but the American was adjudged as the runner-up following a photo-finish.

Also at the Ponce Grand Prix, Rose Mary Almanza of Cuba ran the year’s first sub-2 minutes in the 800 metres.

Almanza won the event in one minute 59.35 seconds, ahead of fellow Cuban Sahily Diago, who also went under the two-minute barrier, dipping to 1:59.91.

Simoya Campbell, getting closer to the World Championships qualifying mark of 2:01.00, registered a big personal best of 2:01.59.

Jessica Young of USA won the women’s 100m in 11.38 ahead of compatriots Tawanna Meadows (11.39) and Sholanda Solomon (11.44).

American women also dominated the 200m with Cambrya Jones (23.37) over Young (23.50) and Mahagony Jones (23.82).

Local hero Javier Culson suffered a rare defeat over 400m hurdles, beaten by Jeffery Gibson of the Bahamas (49.19) to Culson, who crashed into the final hurdle before he was pipped on the line, and whose time was 49.31.

In the men’s 110m hurdles, former world champion Jason Richardson (13.34) beat Cuba’s Yordin O’Farril (13.35). In the men’s 800m, Charles Jock of the USA (1:45.40) took the win against Rafith Rodriguez of Colombia (1:45.53).

Thank god I came out injury free.” Cedenio expressed surprise at the medal bonus programme from the TTOC saying, “That’s really good. It’s extra motivation to climb the podium.” World Champs and Stockholm are up next for this young champion and newly minted Pan Am Silver medallist.

Compatriot Solomon also took heart in his performance saying, “I’m in good shape and I’m ready to run fast at worlds. It will happen. I can run the times the medallists are running.”

In the women’s 200m Kamaria Durant finished 4th in her semi-final heat in a time of 22.94, while Reyare Thomas finished 5th in a time of 22.88. Thomas will advance to tomorrow’s final as one of the two fastest losers. Earlier in the day, Durant ran a new personal best in qualifications with a time 22.74. Following that race she said,  “The sun was really hot but I’m really happy I was able to overcome the heat and run a personal best. Hopefully I can go faster and cut that time down in the semis.” Unfortunately Durant wasn’t able to do so and will not advance to the finals.

Over on the men’s side Kyle Greaux and Rondel Sorillo were unable to advance to the final.  Greaux finished 7th in semi final one in a time of 20.69. The winner of that race Jamaican Richard Dwyer broke the 44-year-old Pan Am record with a time of 19.80. Rondel Sorillo finished 6th in semi final two with a time of 20.61. Following his race Sorillo said, “I felt flat. Today wasn’t a good day. Relays are next.”

In the discus, Quincy Wilson finished 10th. Of his performance he said, “It wasn’t great. I had nothing to lose but unfortunately I wasn’t on my A game.” Out in field hockey, the men’s team lost their 5th to 8th round match against the United States 2-1.

Track and field action continues tomorrow with relay qualifications and the men’s javelin final featuring national record holder, Keshorn Walcott.

MACHEL CEDENIO, the 19-year-old 400 metre runner whose athletic career is already glittered with success at the relatively tender age of 19, has the makings of an Olympic 400 metre champion. That is the opinion of Alvin Daniel, one of TT’s celebrated quarter-milers of a bygone, but not forgotten era.

Daniel’s pronouncement on Cedenio did not come in the wake of the lanky southerner’s performances at the recently-concluded Pan American Games in Toronto; weeks before, he had told Newsday it was his conviction that Cedenio would win 400 gold at the upcoming IAAF World Championships in Beijing.

Not surprisingly, his opinion hadn’t changed when Newsday called him yesterday for comment.

“He’s young, and he’s already been having a lot of success,” Daniel said, listing some factors he felt would weigh in the athlete’s favour in Beijing. “The big names (in the 400m) have a lot at stake; he (Machel) has been exposed to big events at an early age; he’s hungrier and he has nothing to lose.”

Daniel, who ran at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, was quite clear on what the rising quarter-miler needs to do to beat the World and Olympic champion.

“I have him down to beat Kirani James. It’s just a matter of race-planning. Anytime a quarter-miler can finish so fast, he’s a threat.

“But he has to stay with Kirani. Once it comes down to the home stretch, he’s going to beat him. He finishes very fast for a quarter-miler.”

Cedenio showed just how fast he can finish when he turned possible bronze into gold for TT in the final 50 metres of the 4x400m final at the Pan Am Games on Saturday night.

His performance had track fans buzzing for days with his blistering pace on the anchor jaw-dropping.

Daniel should know about the art of running 400s. In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, he was part of TT’s formidable 4x400 metre relay quartet that was spearheaded by Ian Morris, a two-time Olympic finalist, and included Neil De Silva and Patrick Delice.

He also had the distinction of whipping his Jamaican 400m rivals in their own backyard (the National Stadium in Kingston) for four successive years.

The Point Fortin native was also excited about the prospect of Cedenio running with a full-strength TT mile relay team. “If (Deon) Lendore is running, Cedenio, (Renny) Quow and (Lalonde) Gordon... the only team I can see to challenge them is America.”

That comment prompted Newsday to seek his opinion on Gordon, who has been inconsistent over the distance since winning bronze medals in both the 400 and the 4x400 metre relay in the London 2012 Olympics.

“Lalonde, that is just his style,” Daniel responded. “I find he has a lot of talent, but he stays back too long, makes his move too late. You don’t let your main challengers go past you- stay as close as possible.”

Daniel’s picks for the relay final in Beijing was Gordon, Lendore, Cedenio and Quow (not in any specific order), with Jarrin Solomon as reserve.

The World Championships open in Beijing on August 22; the Men’s 400m final will be run on August 26, and the mile relay final will close the programme on the final night, August 30.

There is that Newkirk fella from South Africa?!!

And Merritt. They are both strong contenders to give Kirani a close run in Beijing and we also can't ignore Steven Gardiner from Bahamas. Plus Luguelín Santos seems to be back to his best and can press for a medal once he is.

A lot of influential people in T&T seem to be pushing for Cedenio to run the individual 400m in Beijing but that would mean one of our other top quarter-milers Renny Quow, Jarrin Solomon or Lalonde Gordon giving up their individual 400m spot in Beijing which they would have assumed they earned based on their placing in the 400m Final at T&T National Trials.
NAAA's will have a tough decision to make to give one of the 3 individual 400m spots in Beijing to Cedenio who was DQed in the Final at Trials if none of the guys are willing to give up the spot that they have earned.

I wonder if one of them is willing to give up their individual 400m spot to Cedenio and who is most likely to be willing to do that as we want to keep the team spirit for our 4x4 relay team alive and as healthy as possible.

Socapro I have been saying that to you from day one . My take on it is if you can't clock under 45 sec before world's what  sense  it makes  putting you to run the individual over a guy who has consistently run under 45 this season. I am not against or a hater of jarrin Solomon but I am a supporter , the truth is that he cant compete on an individual level against these guys but he is a relay beast , A fresh jarrin Solomon for two legs on the relay can be very good for T&T. Look at the pan am games for example he ran the two legs individually and the semi's of pan am games but in the final he was out of steam and even though he got the baton first from remy faded coming home. Had it been lalonde on that second leg and ran the way jarrin did the forum would be bashing him. Quow and cedenio leg was the only two legs that we can be proud about

I would give Solomon a bligh for his 2nd leg run in the Pan Am 4x4 Final because he ran the individual 400m where he place 5th in the Final with a decent run and also ran in the 4x4 Heats before running in the Final.

In contrast Cedenio who also ran the individual Pan Am 400m and won silver was rested from running in the 4x4 Heats and so was fresh for the Final hence his massively impressive anchor in the final.

I think the NAAA's should pose the question to Solomon about giving up his 400m spot to Cedenio and let Solomon decide but would that be a fair thing to do seeing that all athletes want to run in their individual event at World Champs and train for that opportunity.

To me the most disappointing run in the 4x4 relay was by Lalonde Gordon who did the leadoff leg in the 4x4 Heats keeping in mind that he was fresh because he did not run in the individual 400m like Solomon and Cedenio did. Lalonde Gordon's form seems to be very unpredictable this season but when he does come good he can beat the best of them. I am hoping that he is saving his best for Beijing.

Do you think we can win gold in Beijing without Deon Lendore?
It is quite possible Deon may not be 100% recovered from his knee injury (which he sustained during the NCAA Championships) in time for Beijing and may not be able to run in the 4x4 as we have all been hoping.

I reckon we can still at least medal in Beijing without Lendore in the 4x4 squad but we will need to manage our quarter-milers properly and will need Lalonde Gordon to come good on his relay leg(s) and not underperform.

This might be J Solomon last time to run a individual 400 for the olympics or the WC so it is not right to give up his spot Cedenio is young and has many more championships to attend he has enough time to learn from his mistakes.

I agree but can a time of 44.50 or slower win a medal in the final?

Solomon's PB is 44.98. He will need to run a new PB to medal in the WC Final if he makes the Final that's for sure but who are we to decide that he is not capbale of running a new PB and medalling in the Final?

I suspect that Solomon believes in himself that he is capable of running a 44.50 or better in a World Champs final if he qualifies for the final and can execute the perfect race so who are we to doubt him?

PS:
I reckon that Jarrin Solomon who is around the same height as Luguelín Santos or slightly taller than him can bring his PB down to around 44.45 just like Santos. If Solomon runs his flat 400m in a similar pattern to Santos then he is also capable of a 44.45 PB like Santos has done in the past.
In fact I think their race patterns are similar but Santos does have a good kick that he can inject in his last 100m when he is at his best.

While that may be the case it is up to what the individual value more. Country or Personal gain. If he think he can run 44.5 show it , performance talk, not hope of a performance . Everybody dreams of being the best but do everyone has the ability to do it . It is like the Dog and the bone, He can end up with nothing.

Good but we need Cedenio who can run man down in the last 100m on the final leg; he proved that leg belongs to him in Toronto this weekend! Even if Deon is healthy Deon runs one of the other legs from now on and Cedenio anchors!

I believe this is the order that we are most likely to medal in Beijing without Lendore in the squad:-

1st leg: Renny Quow, 2nd leg Jarrin Solomon, 3rd leg Lalonde Gordon & 4th leg Machel Cedenio;

If we are confident that Lalonde Gordon is in top form and not spent then we can also go with this order:-

1st leg: Lalonde Gordon, 2nd leg Jarrin Solomon, 3rd leg Renny Quow & 4th leg Machel Cedenio.

With all our quarter-milers firing in that squad we should be in the top 3 pressing the USA and the Bahamas for Gold and if Cedenio can give us another anchor like in the Pan Am 4x4 final then we could end up with a gold medal. However Merritt for USA and Gardiner for Bahamas will also be a good match for Cedenio on the last leg. Even Javon Francis for JA could put them in the mix for a medal if Jamaica gets the baton to him on the final leg within striking distance of the top 3 teams.

Do you think the SA 4x4 relay team will make the final and will be good enough to contend for a medal?

Machel Cedenio produced a stunning come-from-behind victory at the Bauhaus Athletics IAAF Diamond League meet, in Stockholm, Sweden, yesterday.

Coming off the final turn in the men's 400 metres event, Cedenio trailed the field. The Trinidad and Tobago track star was way behind the leaders, but the work required to get in contention for the top spot was not beyond him.

Watch "T&T's Machel Cedenio wins Men's 400m at IAAF Diamond League" (http://www.tv6tnt.com/news/TTs-Machel-Cedenio-wins-Mens-400m-in-4497-at--IAAF-Golden-League-320196971.html)

In chilly conditions, Cedenio was red hot. He steamrolled his rivals on the home straight, reeling in all before him for what turned out to be a comfortable victory in 44.97 seconds.

“The race felt good,” said Cedenio. “It was a little bit slow but I'm so happy with the win and I thank God for it.”

Cedenio exacted swift revenge on Luguelin Santos, the man who forced him into the silver medal position at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, last week, the Dominican Republic quarter-miler finishing second yesterday in 45.21. Third spot, meanwhile, went to Great Britain's Martyn Rooney (45.41).

Cedenio's superb finishing power was also on display in the Pan Am Games men's 4x400m championship race. His storming finish on anchor turned bronze into gold for T&T.

The 44.97 seconds clocking in Stockholm was Cedenio's fourth sub-45 run this year. The 19-year-old athlete produced his first-ever 44-point 400 on May 16 at the Cayman Invitational, stopping the clock at a personal best 44.36 seconds. He followed up on his golden run at the Cayman meet with victory in Ponce, Puerto Rico one week later in 44.97. In the Pan Am Games final, Cedenio clocked 44.70, before notching sub-45 number four at yesterday's Diamond League meet.

There was actually a fifth 44-point run for Cedenio in 2015. However, the 44.29 seconds scorcher at the NGC-Sagicor National Open Championships was scratched from the books following his disqualification for running out of his lane.

Cedenio is currently joint-sixth on the 2015 world performance list, with reigning world champion LaShawn Merritt of the United States. Both quartermilers have clocked 44.36 this year.

Botswana's Isaac Makwala is the world-leader at 43.72 seconds. Grenada's 2012 Olympic champion Kirani James clocked 43.95 for second spot on the global list, while third spot is held by South Africa's Wayde van Niekirk with a 43.96 run. Bahamian Steven Gardiner and Qatar's Abdalelah Haroun are joint-fourth at 44.27.

Another T&T quarter-miler, Deon Lendore is joint-eighth with American David Verburg thanks to a 44.41 seconds run he produced in May.

Cedenio powers to 1st Diamond League gold (http://www.newsday.co.tt/sport/0,214928.html)
By ASHFORD JACKMAN Friday, July 31 2015 (T&T Newsday)

MACHEL CEDENIO confirmed his status as one of the world’s foremost 400 metre runners yesterday, taking the gold medal in his pet event with a typically dramatic finish at the IAAF Diamond League Grand Prix meet in Stockholm, Sweden.

Just weeks before the World Athletics Championships in Beijing, the lanky southerner, still two months short of his 20th birthday, has stamped his name firmly among the few of the quality to challenge Olympic champion Kirani James for one lap sprint gold.

In the process, Cedenio, the Pan Am Games silver medallist also exacted revenge on the Dominican Republic’s Luguelin Santos, who had beaten him to the Pan Am gold in Toronto.

What made his victory the more remarkable was the fact that despite falling way behind the leaders at 300 metres, Cedenio was the only athlete to finish under 45 seconds.

One of only two TT athletes who competed in Stockholm, Cedenio appeared initially to be out of medal contention.

When the runners cleared the final turn, the World Junior champion, running in lane five, was second-to-last; Jamaican Rusheen Mc Donald (lane 6) and Santos (lane 8 ) were leading the pack home.

Cedenio then began to accelerate, passing athlete after athlete, almost as though they were stationary. He crossed the line first, in 44.97 seconds; Santos followed, almost a quarter of a second behind in 45.21, while Britain’s Martyn Rooney took the bronze in 45.41.

Victory for the TT quarter-miler came in just his second appearance in the Diamond League; he was sixth in New York on June 13 in 45.89, just behind countryman Renny Quow (5th, 45.57) in a race won by South African Wayde Van Niekerk (44.24).

Van Niekerk heads the Diamond League Men’s 400m points standings with eight; Cedenio is now tied for second with Bahamian Steven Gardiner, on four; Americans La Shawn Merritt and David Verburg are next, on three points each.

Defending World and Olympic Champion Kirani James has not appeared in the Diamond League since finishing second (44.17) behind Van Niekerk (43.96) in Paris on July 4.

Meanwhile, Pan Am Games gold medallist Cleopatra Borel finished down the field in the Women’s Shot Put, sixth of eight competitors with a best throw of 18.25 metres. Germany’s Christiana Schwanitz (20.13) claimed the gold, while American Michelle Carter (19.24) and Hungary’s Anita Marzon (18.74) took the minor placings.

Jamaica’s World and Olympic sprint champion, Shelly Ann Fraser- Pryce won the Women’s 100 metres in 10.93 seconds; American Tori Bowie (11.05) took the silver and Pryce’s compatriot Natasha Morrison (11.22) got the bronze.

The Diamond League series now takes a break for the World Championships, which open on August 22 in Beijing, China.

T&T’s Machel Cedenio clocked 44.97 to win the Men’s 400m at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Stockholm, Sweden yesterday. The 19-year-old unleashed a burst of speed on the final stretch which left the crowd stunned. “That was astonishing from Cedenio,” remarked one television commentator. “It just all changed in the last 40m. It was quite incredible.”

Dominican Republic’s Luguelin Santos nabbed the silver in 45.21 while Great Britain’s Martyn Rooney was third in a season’s best of 45.41. The result bumped Cedenio up to third in the Diamond League 400m standings with four points. He is led by Grenada’s Kirani James and Russia’s Wayde Van Niekerk, who have each won two races this season.

It capped off a successful week for Cedenio, who earlier managed an individual 400m silver and anchored T&T’s gold medal winning 4x400m run at the Pan American Games in Toronto, which ended on Sunday.

Also announcing herself yesterday was Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who warmed up for the world championships with a dominant win in the women’s 100 metres. Fraser-Pryce, the world and Olympic champion, clocked 10.93 seconds in the headline race to beat Tori Bowie of the U.S. by 0.12 seconds.

“The time wasn’t what I wanted, but I’m grateful I came out here and did my best,” Fraser-Pryce said. “There’s always pressure going into a world championships, but I’m not worried about that. I’m not worried about anything.” Fraser-Pryce also reiterated her stance that she won’t defend her 200 title at the worlds, a day after hinting she may change her mind and run both distances.

“In Beijing, I’m not running the 200. I’m telling my coach he has to change my mind,” she said. “The 200 is too far, so I’m set for the 100.”

It seems that the gold-medal exploits at last year's Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada were more than enough to seal the First Citizens Sports Foundation 2015 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, as both Machel Cedenio and Cleopatra Borel walked away with the top honours in front of an applauding 400-strong audience at Queen's Hall on Sunday evening.

There was a slight touch of déjà-vu as both athletes also swept the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) awards which were held last December at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Borel, the 37-year-old defied all of the common reservations about age and not only became the first woman from Trinidad and Tobago to win Pan Am gold when she hurled the iron ball 18.67 metres to cement her place in local sporting history, but also collected the award for the fifth time.

Cedenio also made his mark in 2015, coincidentally at the same Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Champion shot-putter Cleopatra Borel copped her fifth First Citizens Sportswoman of the Year award on Sunday night at the 53rd annual First Citizens Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year ceremony at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s, while quarter-miler Machel Cedenio took home the Sportsman of the Year title.

Their successes ensured track and field dominated by capturing four of five awards at stake. The representing National Association of Athletics Administration (NAAA) was voted the Administration of the Year (large) for a second consecutive year to take home the prestigious Jeffery Stollmeyer Memorial Award, which its president Ephraim Serrette accepted.

The men’s 4x400 metres relay team, for their feats at the Pan American and the World Championships, got the judges’ nod for the Lystra Lewis Award for Team of the Year. The Chess Association of T&T completed the list of honours. It was voted the Administration of the Year (small) and was also bestowed with the Jeffrey Stollmeyer Memorial Award which its president Sonja Johnson collected.

Fifty-five athletes–30 males and 25 females–were nominated in 31 disciplines and after the presentations, 10 were short listed, with three being from track and field- Keshorn Walcott, Borel and Cedenio.

The others cyclist Njisane Phillip, Vanessa Hill (body-building); Kelly Ann Arrindell (sailing); Kenwyne Jones (football); Monifa Sealy (golf) George Bovell III (swimming) and Akeem Stewart (para-athletics) completed the list.

Cedenio won individual silver at the Pan American Games, before joining forces with teammates in the men’s 4x400 metres relay final on July 25 where he fought valiantly, surging past his rivals in the final 100 metres to secure gold ahead of Cuba and the USA.

The 19-year replicated that performance at the DN Galan Diamond League in Stockholm, Sweden, in July. Trailing, Cedenio executed another finishing kick to steal victory in 44.97 seconds. He later put icing on the cake with a victory in the 400 metres in George Town, Cayman Islands, in a personal best time of 44.36.

Borel, meanwhile, reaped awards for her commitment when she secured gold at the Pan American Games in Toronto in the women’s shot put, with a throw of 18.67 metres that put her ahead of silver medalist Jillian Camarena-Williams (USA) and Natalia Duco (Chile).

Borel, who achieved a season’s best throw of 19.26 metres to claim victory at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, on July 7, was also in fine form on the IAAF Diamond League circuit with a second-place performance at the British Athletics Grand Prix in Birmingham, England, a third-place display at the London Grand Prix and a fourth-place finish at the Meeting Areva in Paris.

Afterwards Cedenio was awed to have shaken the hand of President Carmona and further delighted to receive the honour. When asked about his preparations for the Olympics, he said the strategy by his coaches at Pure Athletes a pro-Adidas camp in Miami, Florida, was to take things slow.

“More of the mental part of the track than the physical part. We are getting closer together. As it’s an Olympic year, he is getting to understand my body more and I am understanding his workouts more. We are working hand-in-hand to make me a better athlete. I’m going to keep focused, keep doing what I do…go on the track…keep this winning mentality.”

Borel said: “It feels great. Five is my favourite number.”

The Honour Roll:

Sportswoman of the Year: Cleopatra Borel

Machel Cedenio & Cleopatra Borel First Citizens 2015 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year

AS THEY did in the 2015 Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) Award ceremony in late December, track and field stand-outs Machel Cedenio and Cleopatra Borel secured the 2015 First Citizens Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards at the Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s on Sunday night.

For the 19-year-old Cedenio, the Sportsman of the Year award was his reward for an excellent season, which saw him guide the TT men’s 4x400-metre relay team to gold at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada last July. He ran the final leg and propelled the TT quartet from third place (when he took the baton) to victory.

At the Pan Am Games, he also got silver in the men’s 400m, weeks after setting a personal best time of 44.36 seconds at a meet in George Town, Cayman Islands.

Cedenio said, “I feel really good winning this award. It’s the most prestigious award I ever won. It really meant a lot to me.” Currently preparing for his second successive Olympic Games, Cedenio, who is based in Florida, United States, noted, “preparations has been going really good for me. Me and my coach (Lance Brauman) are taking it slow at the moment, putting a lot of stuff together.

We are working together to make me a better athlete.” Questioned as to what moment stood out for him last year, the teenager replied, “Pan Am, but I still cherish all my moments.” Borel, on the other hand, made history as the first five-time winner of the Sportswoman of the Year award, having walked away with the trophy in 2002, 2007, 2010 and 2014.

The 37-year-old’s most significant achievement last year was also at the Pan Am Games, where she captured gold in the women’s shot put with an effort of 18.67m.

“It feels great, five is my favourite number,” said Borel, after the ceremony.

Like Cedenio, Borel pointed out that the Pan Am Games stood out for her during her 2015 season.

“Being the first (TT ) female to win a Pan American Games gold medal, I think that’s what did it for me,” she said.

Looking ahead to her fourth Olympic Games, Borel said, “training and preparation are going really well. The coach (Ismael Mastrapa) and I are getting ready for World Indoors, and we have a solid plan going into Rio (Olympics).

Based on how things have gone thus far I’m really happy.

“This year I’m working on my strength. I’m working on my technique and all the little things that make my shot put goal go a little bit further.” Both athletes were in the Top 10 Athletes for 2015, along with former winners Keshorn Walcott (track and field), George Bovell III (swimming), Njisane Phillip (cycling), Vanessa Hill (body building), Kelly Ann Arrindell (sailing), Kenwyne Jones (football), Monifa Sealy (golf) and Akeem Stewart (paralympics).

Ironically, there was double success for Cedenio, as the men’s 4x400m Pan Am Games gold medal squad walked away with the Lystra Lewis Award, as the team/ group of the year.

The Jeffrey Stollmeyer Award, for the National Governing Body which has showcased initiatives, and made significant improvements, in its Administration as well as the development of its athletes, was given in two categories.

For the smaller bodies, the Trinidad and Tobago Chess Association got the nod, ahead of the TT Gymnastics Federation and the TT Table Tennis Association. And, for the larger bodies, the National Association of Athletic Association (NAAA) emerged victorious, ahead of the TT Netball Association and the TT Hockey Board.

Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Darryl Smith, and Sports Foundation chairman Dr Keith Clifford, also delivered addresses in the hour-and-15-minute long ceremony.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were President Anthony Carmona and Her Excellency Reema Carmona, Chief Justice Ivor Archie, TT Olympic Committee (TTO C) president Brian Lewis and members of the diplomatic corps.

Title: Machel Cedenio 44.79 men's 400m #3 in the World Tom Jones Memorial Invitational
Post by: Socapro on April 23, 2016, 12:34:51 PM
Machel Cedenio 44.79 men's 400m #3 in the World Tom Jones Memorial Invitational 2016
https://www.youtube.com/v/ic34ST_h88k

Trinidad and Tobago’s 2014 world junior 400m Champion Machel Cedenio opened his season with an impressive 44.79 placed just third in the world this year behind Kirani James (44.36) and Bralon Taplin (44.41).

Machel currently 3rd in IAAF Men's 400m Top List 2016!
See link: http://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/sprints/400-metres/outdoor/men/senior/2016

RACE ANALYSIS:

Cedenio came from behind in the final 100m as per usual!
If Cedenio can stay with the race leader(s) for the first 300m and not always have to come from behind then he will be able to go 44 low this season and who knows!

I hope Cedenio runs a few 200m races this season to build on his raw speed so that he can stay with the top guns much easier in the first 300m of his 400m races.

If Cedenio can get his 200m PB down to 20.50 or less then he should be able to destroy most of the top quarter-milers over the last 100m of his races as he normally does which will mean him running away from the leaders rather than having to try to catch them in the last 100m of his 400m races.

I hope Cedenio and his coach are working on that important aspect of his 400m races, which is his raw 200m speed. I notice that Cedenio tends to lose ground with the race leader(s) between 200m and 300m where he relaxes which always leaves him with ground to make up in the last 400m of his races. The moment Cedenio runs his first 300m stronger so that he comes into the final straight with the race leaders then its curtains for most of the other top quarter-milers and Cedenio is likely to go sub-44 when he does that.

Our current TTO national 400m record is likely not be fast enough to even medal in the 400m final in Rio.

And here is another good interview with Mewrritt talking about the purpose of his 200m speed work.
Merritt says he is training to run 43.low by Rio as that is what he thinks will be required to medal and win.
Hopefully our top TTO quarter-milers are training with a similar 43.low target 400m time in mind for Rio.
2016 will not be a year for those quarter-milers who want to cut corners in training if they wish to make the 400m final and medal in Rio. National 400m record holder Machel Cedenio joined his alma mater, the Point Fortin Anglican Primary School, on Friday as the school celebrates it's 100th Anniversary.

Cedenio, who started running while at Point Fortin Anglican Primary, said he was happy to be a part of this special occasion, which saw students, teachers and parents celebrate in song, dance and a walk of excellence through the streets of Point Fortin.

Track stars Machel Cedenio and Sparkle McKnight, Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) club Bethel United, the Memphis Sports Club, and WI Sport were among 13 athletes and sporting organisations who received funding from the Ministry of Sport and Community Development (MSCD), at its head office in Nicholas Tower, Independence Square, Port of Spain on Monday.

In total, Minister of Sport and Community Development Shamfa Cudjoe distributed TT$794,936, according to a press release from the MSCD.

Cudjoe urged the recipients to ‘use this time wisely for planning, capacity building, and training’ and to take advantage of strategic planning and operations workshops provided by the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SPORTT) from 11 February to 4 March.

The workshops are designed to ‘provide NGBs and NGOs with the tools needed for the long term development of their athletes and the management of the business of sport’.

Five from the 13 recipients received funding as part of the Elite Athletes Assistance Programme (EAAP). Those elite athletes were: Andwuelle Wright, Machel Cedenio, Kyle Greaux, Sparkle McKnight, and Jerod Elcock.

The other eight organisations benefited from grant funding ‘in support of their programmes and activities geared at fostering sport development, facilitating athletic performance, and engendering community spirit’.

Those recipients were: Alejandro John, Rhodney Allen, Memphis Sports Club, Forbes Football Visionary Concepts, Hills United, Bethel United, Mt St George Police Youth Club, and WI Sport.

The MSCD release states that the ministry ‘remains committed to supporting our nation’s athletes and maximising the full potential of sports towards developing our people, empowering our communities, and building our country’.
