Bajans upset over Machel’s Crop Over takeover
T&T Guardian Reports.

Soca superstar Machel Montano has found himself in the middle of controversy at the annual Barbados Crop Over festival over his top billing for Cohobblopot, the Barbadian equivalent of this country’s Dimanche Gras. This year’s event, billed as the Ultimate Summer Show, is scheduled for July 31 at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown and features all-star entertainers from Barbados and the region. There is bitter debate in Barbados over the fact that the Trinidadian star and his band, The HD Family, are being heavily used to promote the event, while Bajan artistes are receiving little or no mention.

The most vocal critic so far has been Barbadian entertainer and promoter Alan Sheppard, who said it was insulting and disrespectful for the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) and the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) to have Machel’s image on posters to promote Barbados’ premier cultural festival, Crop Over. The former lead singer of the now disbanded Spice and Company has publicly expressed his disgust on the social media network Facebook, accusing the BTA and the NCF of making Barbados the laughing stock of the world. “That is total disrespect for all Barbadian artistes and could never happen in Trinidad or any other country promoting a national indigenous festival”, wrote Sheppard.

Undaunted by the criticism, Machel featured in a Digicel-sponsored motorcade from Kensington Oval through Bridgetown last Friday to promote Cohobblopot and Caribbean unity. When the Trinidadian Soca artiste stepped from a Freekz Customz jeep during the promotional event, which ended at Cave Shepherd, he was mobbed by fans trying to get pictures with him. Accompanied by Digicel personnel, NCF chief executive officer Donna Hunte-Cox and Barbadian calypsonians Red Plastic Bag, Mac Fingall, Biggie Irie and Mr Dale—who will all be performing at the July 31 event—Machel shouted, “Cohobblopot ah coming” as he waved and blew kisses to fans.

Nine-time calypso monarch Red Plastic Bag, a regular on the Trinidad circuit, added his voice to the ongoing discussion about a Trinidadian act promoting a Barbadian cultural event when he said it was always a pleasure having Machel around. Later, during a media conference hosted by the NCF at Cave Shepherd, Machel had his own response to the critics when he declared: “Unity over separation every time!” In addition to Machel, other T&T artistes listed to perform at Crop Over events over the next few weeks are Destra, Iwer George, Bunji Garlin, Fayann Lyons and Kes the Band.

I know loads of English tourists who are flying out from London this week & next week for Crop Over & most are looking forward to seeing the Soca King Machel live in action alongside the Bajan Soca Stars on the big Cohobblopot night.

The Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) know what they doing, they bringing in even more tourist dollars than they would have done if Machel was not on the bill!!

Big up to them, soca is now bigger than the narrow-minded island mentality which can only serve to hold it back.
The King of Soca is the King of Soca and if yuh have the King of Soca on the bill then he has to be heading the bill, so it go in the sensible business world when you want to maximise your profits!

As the $2mil Machel said "Unity is Strength!" but ah could understand the jealousy still!

The rank and file Bajan soca lover not into that. It is the very few promoters who not getting piece of the pie or not a big enough piece of the pie grumbling. Look a decade ago the Bajan invasion swept TT and the Caribbean. TT embraced Spice, Edwin and crossfire, Rupi and Coalishun, Alyson Hinds(at time I swear she is Trini), TC, Mark Fingall, Red PB and many more. I was not hearing noise from these grumblers now. The deal is to bring tourist to the island. Right now Machel has the name recognition and that is just the way it is. If a Bajan come a some hot soca that burning up the international airways, you think Trini soca lovers would not embrace him.

Correct! We've done it before and we'll do it again!
Trinis are the most musically open-minded people in the Caribbean and probably in the world too!!

If you come good you'll get our love regardless of where yuh from!! Good music for a Trini has no nationality and we love good music!

I coulda swear the issue here was Machel image advertising the ppl Cohobblopot all over Bridgetown.... Comparable to Alison Hinds on a banner advertising our Dimanche Gras... I'm sure locals here would have strong objection to that but maybe i'm oversimplifying the issue here.

If that's the case then the Bajan people have a valid complaint but that's the promoters fault! All the main artists for the show should have been on the poster and not just Machel! It's not the Machel Montano Alternative Concert afterall, its Cohobblopot!

Funny thing is this man fail to understand Barbados' "premier cultural festival" and "national indigenous festival" is a knock off of our Carnival along with the music being a knock off of our music.  Stupid Bajans....sound like the same flying fish argument.  Imagine all Trinbagonians pull their creative input, artistes and music.  see how crop over go flop like a flying fish on land.

oddly enough it had ah few years well trinis compose serious shit songs, where the bajan offering were far superior and by extention better received in trinidad than what we put out............in fact not long after some trinis actually started copying the bajan "sound" and "rhythm" .........futher than that, they inspired a brief improvement in the lyrical content from our own soca artists who felt d need to up dey game to compete

You are referring to the 95/96 Bajan Invasion which is now 15 years ago!! That's the period in which Alison Hinds, Edwin Yearwood, Rupee, Gabby & Red Plastic Bag became household names & soca stars in T&T!
Also we cyah forget Gillo even though he's originally from St Lucia but has not had a big hit like "Boi Bande" since!

Bajan invasion went on for a while.  A. Hinds and Rupee were hot in Trini up until like 2002/3...

On one hand it was disappointing to hear our soca getting demolished by the Baj and dem, but on the other hand their tunes was real nice, so de vibes was sweet all the same lol...

:D copying what sound and rhythm ?...the same sound and rhythm that was started by David rudder and Blueboy ?..

Also the bajan younger artists have FAILED to reach the standards of alison hinds or Rupee..tell me who are the young bajan artists with multiple hits ?..Its been YEARS since mulitiple hits has come from within one year out of Barbados..and in recent years the young TnT artists like Benjai and Kes have risen the bar in the game....seems like a bar too high for them bajans to climb..

Yeah... days now I debating if I even want to get involved.  At the end of the day the Bajans right.... just look how some ah we was fretting when they hold some reggae concert fuh Carnival (me being one of them).  Imagine Kartel or Busy Signal headlining Soca Monarch.

...and btw yuh right about the Bajan invasion, Rupee di'n even hit until 2000 and was still going strong in TnT in 2005... just to illustrate.
