Remember your oath
CoP Gibbs reminds cops as sick-out looms:

IN the face of a plan by police officers to stay home next Monday to "rest and reflect", Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs yesterday reminded the officers of the oath they have taken to protect and serve.
"While contingencies have been put in place, the Commissioner believes that officers will continue to give of their best and protect and serve the public with pride," a press release from the Police Public Affairs Unit stated.
Though National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy could not be reached for comment yesterday, last month Sandy had called on officers to allow good sense to prevail, saying that should there be any sick-out action, his Ministry will implement contingency measures to deal with the absenteeism of police officers in the communities.
And, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Anti-Crime Operations, Mervyn Richardson, said yesterday that even if police officers stay home on Monday to "rest", criminals should not feel they are free to commit crimes.
He said criminals should rest assured that law enforcement agencies will be out in full force on Monday, just as any other day, to deal with any incidents of lawlessness.
He also said that the security agencies will not, in any way, tolerate any breaches of the peace as have been happening in other places such as England.
Richardson also assured there is no need for members of the public to be gripped by fear, particularly on Monday. He said Monday will pass just as any other peaceful day in the country.
"I don't think there is any need for the public to panic or fear at all because we have a very capable and professional police service and the members will be out in full force to provide policing services to all members in every community.
"Any thoughts by those who may be so inclined to commit any breach of the peace on Monday because they expect a less than full complement of police officers, I will ask them to think again.
"The police service, and members of the protective services, will be out in full force on Monday, as we do on every other day, to see about the nation's business and to provide a high level of security to the citizens and their business places, home owners and communities, to ensure that peace and quiet at the industrial and other levels," Richardson said.
He added, "I would want to ask all people to desist from even entertaining any thought of acts of instability because the police service is prepared to deal with it in a very strict and robust manner. We don't expect, however, that a peace-loving society of Trinidad and Tobago will engage in such uncivil activities."

Hmmmm, well if I was the youth men in Beetham and Laventille, I would be planning a "a smash & carry" shopping trip on Monday. They must have seen the looters in London. With no police on the streets, thats what I would be doing on monday if I were them.
