Whitecaps defender Mitchell earns praise in MLS debut
By Martin MacMahon (MLSsoccer.com)

Carlyle Mitchell’s MLS debut in the Whitecaps' 3-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Thursday was nice and quiet, with a sprinkling of crunching tackles.

Signed on deadline day, the center back showed composure on the ball and bite in the tackle as Vancouver claimed their fifth MLS victory of the season, and their first at their new home, BC Place.

The Trinidadian's speed and strength were evident throughout the match, especially in the first half, as RSL had several excellent spells of possession, but tellingly, little in the way of quality opportunities.

Mitchell told reporters in the buildup to the match that he’d have to adjust to the increased speed of the North American game, but there were few signs of that on Thursday.

“The speed of the play is very quick,” Mitchell told MLSsoccer.com after Thursday’s win. “Back home, there is more passing at the back. I find I adapted very quick and now I’ll try to push on from here and have another wonderful performance.”

Last week, interim coach Tom Soehn told reporters his center backs had to talk more and marshal the defense, but he seemed happier with that aspect of the game with the addition of Mitchell.

“Mitchell coming in at the back gave us some bite, real athleticism,” Soehn said. “He did a good job communicating. We did a good job of keeping a high line and staying organized."

The new defensive pairing of captain Jay DeMerit and Mitchell seemed to click right away, despite the Trinidadian’s rapid and musical speech.

“Great player, great leadership,” Mitchell said of DeMerit. “We communicate well, understand each other. I talk a little fast, but we understand [each other].”

The pairing’s attributes seem to complement each other well, according to goalkeeper Joe Cannon.

“It was really easy the way [DeMerit and Mitchell] were playing,” the veteran 'keeper noted. “I think Jay and Mitchell are very similar in the sense that they’re good in the air, good in the tackle."

After running away with the shutout win vs. RSL, it seems the Whitecaps have their starting central pair for what remains of this season, and maybe for 2012.

i find this to be very interesting.. All our players go abroad and always comment on the speed of play as opposed to ours @ home. Yet we dont seem inclined to change our style to meet international standards.

More passing @ the back  = more goals conceded..

So will we see a call up for this guy soon?  Another defender, and a young one at 24, is a good thing.  With him and Julius James getting better every day. We could have a good pair of central defenders for years to come.

More passing at the back yes, but not enough touches in midfield. We finding that problem with our National Team too. Lack of composure in midfield, which would mean when we play teams that like to press, our defense would be in trouble.

In addition, somebody PLEASE CALL UP SHEANON WILLIAMS!!!!!!

Whitecaps flash D.C. United 2-1 for back-to-back wins

BY MARC WEBER, THE PROVINCEOCTOBER 13, 2011

Before the game, a Long Tan montage graced the second-biggest video board in North America — recognition of his breakout performance last week.

He loves sushi, Chinese food and scoring goals, we learned.

And, all of a sudden, Vancouver Whitecaps' fans love him.

Tan left Wednesday's 2-1 win over D.C. United to a standing ovation on the hour mark at BC Place.

His header one minute into the second half went off the crossbar and in, and his first MLS goal stood up as the winner in front of 17,288 fans.

After the game, the "#LoveYouLongTan" hashtag — a way to mark topics — was trending on Twitter in Vancouver.

And Tan, a 23-year-old forward from Dalian, China, was in the locker room, surrounded by more media than he's seen combined this season.

An interpreter helped the Mandarin speaker along.

"I'm very happy," Tan said. "I remember today. Alain [Rochat] gave me a very great ball, so, thanks Alain."

Last week's theme was change. Interim coach Tommy Soehn switched four players in his starting lineup and gave Tan his first start since May 14.

Wednesday was about rewarding those players for a 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake, and seeing if they could follow it up.

It only took one minute to answer that question. Jordan Harvey, who is busy reinventing himself on left wing, played in a perfect cross for Camilo and the Brazilian scored his 12th goal of the season.

He's now just two off the Golden Boot pace set by D.C.'s Dwayne De Rosario, New York's Thierry Henry and San Jose's Chris Wondolowski.

But the story of the night was again Tan, whose work rate up front, and patience all season, is finally paying off.

His departure an hour in was telling of what his teammates think. Eric Hassli, the Whitecaps' highest paid player, was back from suspension Wednesday but began on the bench as Tan went to work.

Instead of a high five, or pat on the back, a beaming Hassli embraced Tan as the crowd recognized his effort.

"I just learn every day from him," Tan said. "Every day, he says, 'Long, work hard.' I just listen to him like [he's] my coach.'"

"He's put a lot of work into the last two games," said Soehn, "and I was really happy for him. You could see the excitement in his eyes when he scored and he's earned it. He's give us a lot of life out there."

Soehn's other switches last week continued to work well. John Thorrington brought a tenacity and calm to central midfield, Tanzanian Nizar Khalfan was energetic on right wing, and Carlyle Mitchell was steady at centre back before leaving with tightness in his groin in the 61st.

Harvey's move to left wing has paid off, and, of equal importance, allowed Rochat to return to left-back from centre back.

Both played in pin-point crosses Wednesday that led to goals and, coming into the game, the Whitecaps had scored just five times off crosses all season.

The win damaged D.C.'s playoff hopes and marked the Whitecaps (6-16-10) first back-to-back victories of the season. It also lifted them out of the MLS basement, a spot now occupied by the New England Revolution.

"We said that coming in," said captain Jay DeMerit. "If we win tonight, then we're not the last place team in the league. Nobody wants to be that."

Davide Chiumiento is sure to be a talking point this week as the talented but mercurial Italian playmaker was left off the 18-man roster.

For now, though, it's Tan's spotlight. His smart run also aided the opening goal, as he drew a defender to free up Camilo for a simple finish.

D.C. mounted a comeback when Santino Quaranta, fresh off the bench, had his long free kick headed in by defender Brandon McDonald in the 58th minute.

With Mitchell forced out of the game, the home side were briefly unsettled at the back but managed to hang on, thanks in part to a Jeb Brovsky sliding block that might have hit the fullback's arm.

Shea Salinas also made an important sliding block in time added on when DeMerit slipped on what seemed to be an unusually slick surface.

The visitors ultimately missed their MVP candidate, Dwayne De Rosario, who played 90 minutes for Canada in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday in Toronto.

"You want to finish off the season proud of something," Soehn said. "We've put together two results now and performances that feel like you're competing."

from what i recall mitchell distinguished himself on the olympic team under mccomie, saving us shame by scoring the single t&t goal in a 3-1 loss against grenada. maybe he hadn't got his feet under him yet when maturana took over. dunno why latas didn't select him.

Q&A with 'Caps defender Carlyle Mitchell
By Carl Valentine & Brandon Timko (whitecapsfc.com)

Late in the season, Whitecaps FC signed Trinidad & Tobago international Carlyle Mitchell. The centre back ended up starting three of the final four home matches on Bell Pitch at BC Place. Yesterday it was announced that Mitchell has been called up to play for his national team, but before leaving he took some time to talk with whitecapsfc.com, telling us about his humble beginnings on the island, his career path, and how he ended up becoming a defender.

Q: Alright Carlyle, to start, tell us what life was like growing up in Trinidad?

A: It was pretty hard because I didn’t come from a rich family. My dad worked and my mom was a housewife. Making it as a footballer was the best way out of poverty.

Q: Do you have any siblings?

A: I have three brothers and three sisters.  My brothers are Devon, Dexter and Joseph and my sisters are Saphire, Carlene and Melissa.

Q: Who did you look up to when you were younger?

A: When I was younger, I liked Manchester United because of Dwight Yorke because he came from Trinidad and he was playing for a big club in England. That was a big thing for Trinidadians.

Q: Which teams have you played for?

A: I played on my neighbourhood team called Uprising and then Pinto United in my village. Then I went to Memphis (in Trinidad), one of the biggest youth academies on the island. From Memphis, I played school football at Mt. Hope, then I went to Hillview College. A coach saw me and liked me and took me on for the national U-20 team. I then started with Caledonia AIA for one year in the TT Pro League. I was a U-20 player, so I wasn’t on a professional contract. Then I made the Trinidad U-23 Olympic team and I signed with Joe Public F.C., which was the first pro contract I signed. From there I came to the Whitecaps.

Q: How old were you when you made your pro debut?

A: I was 19-years-old playing for Caledonia. I’d just come out of school. We were playing Defence Force in a cup match and we won on penalties, 4-3 I think.

Q: Have you always been a defender?

A: No, I was a striker. I played striker for the national U-20 team, U-23 team and at Caledonia AIA. At Caledonia, the coach played me a bit in defence because of my height, but I didn’t like defence because I liked to score goals. I moved on to Joe Public to play striker. Then one game, one of our players at Joe Public got injured, and the coach asked ‘Who wants to go on for that guy?’ and I said ‘I want to play, I’ll go on for him’, so I go on for him in defence. After the game finishes, the coach comes up to me and smiles, and I say ‘What you smiling about’, and he says ‘Just giving you food for thought… I didn’t know you could play defence’. So then I started playing defence for Joe Public, and when I did I got a call from Caledonia and they said ‘I thought you had a problem playing defence’, and I just laughed.

Q: Trinidad and Tobago was the smallest nation ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 2006. What do you remember about that?

A: When the first game came up against Sweden, I had to go get my grad suit. So my friend and I went into Port of Spain to get shoes to match my suit, and as we were heading over we listened to the game on the Maxi (public transport) radio. I got to watch the second half when I reached home. In the second game versus England, when Peter Crouch scored that goal against us, the whole of Trinidad went ballistic.

Q: What do you think of the level of play in MLS?

A: MLS is a big step for me and where I come from. The pace of the game is very high compared to Trinidad and great crowd support. Vancouver Whitecaps fill the stadium every game and the crowd makes it great to play football.

Q: What is your favourite memory in your career so far?

A: In 2009 with Joe Public F.C. we won five titles in one season. I think we created history, the only team ever to do that in Trinidad and Tobago.

Q: Who are your favourite players?

A: Ronaldinho and Messi. They have great skill.

Q: Favourite team?

A: I like Barcelona because of the way they keep the ball and play simple. Great chemistry.

Q: Favourite food and drink?

A: I like macaroni pie, chicken. And I like orange Gatorade.

Q: Favourite type of music?

A: I like soca (a musical development of traditional Trinidadian calypso).

Q: What do you think of Vancouver?

A: It’s a great city. I don’t know many places yet, but nice people who are very friendly. I look forward to meeting more people and seeing more of the city.

Great, thanks for your time Carlyle!

Carlyle Mitchell serves by sitting and waiting
By Bruce Constantineau (Vancouver Sun)

Carlyle Mitchell has made the 18-man roster for every Vancouver Whitecaps game this season but hasn't seen a minute of playing time.

That should change soon.

The Caps' Amway Canadian Championship semi-final series game in Edmonton this week marks the start of a possible stretch of eight games in 24 days so Whitecaps understudies will get a chance to play.

Mitchell, a 24-year-old Trinidad & Tobago international centre back, can't wait.

“I've been on the 18 so many times this season and now I'll get a chance so I'll take it,” he said Monday after a Whitecaps training session in Burnaby.

The 6-2, 165-pound defender had three late-season starts for Vancouver after the Caps signed him last September and looked effective in establishing himself as a speedy and physical presence in Major League Soccer.

But starting centre backs Jay DeMerit and Martin Bonjour have anchored a back line that has posted six clean sheets in eight games this season so Mitchell has patiently taken a regular seat on the bench.

“It's not frustrating but at the same time, you really want to play,” he said. “You just have to wait for your chance to come and grasp it with both hands. Nothing happens before its time.”

Mitchell has partnered with centre back Michael Boxall in the club's three reserve games so far this season and scored a last-minute goal to salvage a 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders reserves last month.

He enjoys the playing time he gets at the reserve level but said it doesn't replicate the intensity of an MLS game.

“It's just not the same so you really have to adjust yourself for the big games,” he said.

Boxall, a New Zealand international who started seven of the Whitecaps' first eight games in his rookie season last year, also hasn't seen the field in an MLS game this season and anxiously awaits his chance.

“Obviously it's very frustrating but it's hard to argue with the play of our back four and especially [holding midfielder] Marques Davidson,” he said. “I think he's doing an excellent job.”

Boxall has been working on “little individual things” with assistant coaches Paul Ritchie and Jake DeClute and tries to treat training sessions like they're games.

“Everyone who hasn't been getting regular minutes has definitely been training hard and putting in a lot of effort behind the scenes,” he said. “Whoever gets picked for Wednesday [against Edmonton] and the following Wednesday [in the return match] will definitely be up for it.”

It's a good bet the starting thirtysomethings on the squad – including goalkeeper Joe Cannon, right back Young-Pyo Lee and centre back Jay DeMerit – will be rested Wednesday so they'll be ready for the MLS game against San Jose on Saturday.

So goalkeeper Brad Knighton might get his first start of the season while midfielder Davide Chiumiento, who sat on the bench the past two games, could also see action in Edmonton.

Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie feels he has a deep squad to draw from and notes several people are coming back from injury, including defender Alain Rochat, who has been out more than a month with a knee issue.

“I do think that fresh legs are helpful as much as possible and we have a lot of big games ahead,” he said.

Whither Carlyle Mitchell?
By Benjamin Massey (eightysixforever.com)

News from Vancouver Whitecaps world that Jay DeMerit isn't making the trip to New England. After going for 90 minutes Wednesday against FC Edmonton it's possible that DeMerit's just tired, or that he picked up a knock. Either way, it doesn't sound like the New England Revolution will have to worry about one of our regular defenders.

The smart money says that Alain Rochat will play centre back and Jordan Harvey, who Martin Rennie has frankly inexplicable confidence in, will start at left back. However, I've never been one to be satisfied with the smart money and so I ask the question: what the heck is this team going to do with Carlyle Mitchell?

Have you forgotten about Mitchell? Couldn't blame you. His only action with the Whitecaps first team this year has come in 180 minutes of Voyageurs Cup. He arrived late last season, during the absolute worst of the Tom Soehn dog days, fresh out of obscurity in Trinidad and Tobago.

Mitchell's not a big name. Heck, before the season a few people thought he might be cut. But he has 331 career minutes as a Whitecap (all competitions) and probably 300 of them have been good. He's not large for a centre back but mobile and stronger than he looks. He's also only 24 years old, which should count for plenty on a back four which has two key players (DeMerit and Lee Young-pyo) well into their thirties and another (Rochat) getting awfully close.

Mitchell hasn't got much playing time. A lot of what he did get came in garbage time last season when, frankly, the games didn't count for much and an enthusiastic puppy would have looked impressive. But so far he's hardly put a foot wrong. He brings a good two-way sensibility, has surprisingly fair technical ability given his modest origins, and, on paper at least, ought to pair well with the tall but slower Martin Bonjour. Basically, he ought to do what Rochat does at centre back, therefore freeing the Swiss star to play his best position at left back and thus sending Harvey to play his best position at bench.

Martin Rennie's stuck with a fairly stable squad this year and has been getting results. But DeMerit's absense gives an opportunity for experiment. Sticking with the sub-par Harvey - Rochat left-side tandem won't work; we know how much Rochat hurts playing in the middle and we know how much Harvey hurts trying to play elementary soccer. Mitchell's done nothing but impress in his every opportunity. For heaven's sake, give Carlyle his chance.

In between ranting and raving at Jordan Harvey I do take some time to watch soccer. I have seen the occasional game, and Carlyle Mitchell is a useful centreback if anybody is. In fact, though it's hard to tell given the different levels they've been at, I would prefer Mitchell over DeMerit if you put a gun to my head.

Why do I like Mitchell? Because he's confident on the field without being arrogant. On the one hand he's not afraid to run with the ball and try some audacious passes, he loves to get forward at the appropriate times, and he plays good aggressive soccer. On the other hand he does all this without trying to overstep his bounds, trying to dribble the ball through an entire team, without yanking himself out of defensive position because he thinks he's a Premier League player among semi-pros, or making a bevy of mental mistakes which sometimes affect players of his calibre.

He showed very well late last year and was among Vancouver's better players in both Voyageurs Cup matches. He's also done exceptionally in the MLS Reserves: in a slightly hilarious turn a couple of weeks ago, after a series of injuries hit the Whitecaps Reserves forwards against Portland, Mitchell moved up top and significantly outplayed Atiba Harris in a cameo as a striker. He's also scored with the Reserves this year, although that was as a defender (a dramatic last-minute header off an Omar Salgado cross).

I fully understand keeping Mitchell out of the lineup so far in MLS: why fix what ain't broke, and the Bonjour - DeMerit tandem in the middle has worked out exceptionally. Notwithstanding what I said about preferring Mitchell to DeMerit, I don't think for a second Jay has played himself off the field and am happy with Mitchell as a substitute. But it's possible to take conservatism too far, and playing Harvey over Mitchell would do precisely that.

S. Korea has produced a steady stream of English pros over the pas 12 years (ever since hosting the WC).  Not sure what state their local professional league is in, but it augurs well that they're able to produce such quality players.  The style of play of the national team is fast-paced, and attractive, hopefully that's not limited to coaching preference, and filters down to the pro league as well.   Hope this opportunity works out for him.

Not sure of the vibe in and around football, but many non-Korean/Asian professionals live and work there due to the strength of many S. Korean companies (Samsung, LG, Semes, Hyundai, Daewoo).  Been there once on business and quite multicultural in these sectors (of course though w/a (an) Korean (Asian) dominance).  Not quite on Japan's level from a multi cultural perspective but not far behind.

My guess is in football circles they provide some of the amenities players need to make that transition.  Ply your trade CM, do your thing....

At least Samsung, Hundai, etc are part and parcel of the Korean league. And it shows. Their clubs do pretty well in the Asian club champs. Even though they just lost the Asian nation cup to Aussie on pks, they have consistently reached the finals on numerous occasions. They have consistently qualified for the WC. THe last 7 as far as I can count.

Ah din see the final of the Asian Cup, but that loss was gut wrenching. Saw a clip of the post-game reaction and it was tears. Before the Cup, they were adamant that winning was essential to underscoring their dominance in Asia behind the consistency of WC qualification.

This move catches my attention.

Soca Warriors suffer Mitchell Gold Cup blow.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Already without key midfielder duo, Vietnam-based Hughtun Hector and Orlando City’s Kevin Molino due to long-tern injuries, Soca Warriors coach Stephen Hart will now have to do without sturdy defender Carlyle Mitchell for next month's Concacaf Gold Cup. This after it was confirmed that Mitchell who plays for Seoul E-Land in the South Korean League will not recover from an ankle injury sustained in a league match last month in time.

In addition to Hector and Molino, defensive duo Robert Primus and Seon Power are also nursing injuries while midfielder Ataullah Guerra, who is with the team in Jordan for Tuesday's friendly international is uncertain as he recovers from injury as well. Yesterday, the 21-man T&T senior team arrived in Amman, Jordan after spending the night in London on Friday.

Skipper Kenwyne Jones and the rest of the team checked into the Renaissance Hotel, Heathrow following their Caribbean Airlines travel from Port of Spain on Thursday night.

There was one addition to the squad heading to Jordan as  Denmark-based defender Radanfah Abu Bakr  was included in the team  by Hart after the T&T coach was informed while in London that English-born defender Gavin Hoyte would not be traveling with the team to Amman after requesting to be excused.

Hoyte recently signed with English League two side Barnet and has been asked by his new club to withdraw from the T&T squad for Tuesday’s international friendly and stay back in England.

With regards to the injuries Hart said, “That’s the situation as it is at the moment. We’ve been faced with some challenges but the important thing  is to focus on  what we have going for us at the moment and what is ahead which is a match against Jordan on Tuesday and hopefully a preparation camp next week which will lead us into our Gold Cup campaign.”

“The game against Jordan is an opportunity to have the players together in a game situation which has not been a regular occurrence for us this year.  Having the squad together is always important and we’ll look to address certain things as it pertains to our preparations for the Gold Cup,” he added.

The team will be based at the Grand Hyatt in Amman and will have its first training session in the Kingdom today (Sunday). Last Friday, Jordan secured a 3-1 victory over Tajkistan in Asian 2018 World Cup qualifying action. A hat-trick by Hassan Abdel Fattah gave the visiting Jordan a much deserved win at the  Respublikanskiy Stadion.

Mitchell on the search for new club.
By Shaun Fuentes (Guardian).

National defender Carlyle Mitchell has completed his contract with Seoul E-Land FC in South Korea and is on the search for a new club for the 2017 season.

The former Vancouver Whitecaps player has been a regular in the T&T team, scoring two goals in back-to-back appearances, with two clinical headers in the 3-1 loss to Honduras and the 3-1 victory over Nicaragua last week in Managua.

“I felt great coming off two goals in two matches for the national team.

“My confidence has been good as we headed into the these Gold Cup qualifiers which are very important matches for the team, the coaching staff and players,” Mitchell said.

“Once the Suriname game is out of the way, now we have to focus on Haiti.

“The coach has put down his feet and trying to set an example for the team.

“After that we have the two qualifiers in March but I don’t want to think that far ahead as yet.

“We can be strong at home for those two games against Panama and Mexico and I believe we can get the results in those matches to get ourselves back in the race.”

Mitchell spoke about his club situation, saying: “My two year contract was up in December.

“We didn’t come to a new agreement so we part ways but my agent is working on some things at the moment and pretty soon I should know what’s next for me.”

East Bengal signs Carlyle Mitchell

Kingfisher East Bengal makes another strong move to the transfer market by signing a top class defender to bolster their squad for the forthcoming season. Deon Carlyle Mitchell, the central defender of the current Trinidad and Tobago National team has signed for the Red and Gold Brigade as the third foreigner. The native of another East Bengal foreigner Willis Deon Plaza will no doubt be a huge signing in Indian football.

He signed with Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer on 15 September 2011. making his debut for the club on 6 October 2011. Mitchell was loaned to NASL club FC Edmonton on 11 March 2013. He was released by the Whitecaps on 14 November 2014 after their 2014 season ended.

He signed for South Korean club Seoul E-Land in December 2014, for the 2015 season. Mitchell made his international debut for Trinidad and Tobago in 2010. He scored his first goal for the national side in a 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification 3–1 loss to Honduras on 15 November 2016

Mitchell ready for new India adventure.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago defender Carlyle Mitchell is ready to start a new adventure in his professional football career. And this new stage takes place in India in a few days time.

Mitchell, formerly of MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps agreed to join East Bengal Football club for one season where he link up with countryman Willis Plaza to play in the I-League, the top tier of football in India.

The FIFA Under 17 Men’s World Cup will take place in India in October and the country is abuzz with football activity.

East Bengal plays its home matches at the Salt Lake Stadium which has a capacity of 85,000. The stadium will host the final of the U-17 World Cup with 85,000 bucket seats being installed. The largest crowd at the venue was 131,781 spectators for a domestic Federation Cup final between East Bengal in Mohun Bagan in 1997 prior to the refurbishment of the venue.

Before the start of the I-League, Mitchell and Plaza will appear for East Bengal in the Calcutta League starting next month.

Mitchell,l 29, has played on the Asian continent before, having plied his trade with Seoul E-Land in the South Korean K League between 2015-2016. He is a past player for San Juan Jabloteh, Joe Public and Caledonia AIA and also joined FC Edmonton in Canada on loan in 2013 while he was contracted to Whitecaps. He has made 35 appearances for T&T and is a past student of Hillview College.

Mitchell said he was happy with his latest move.

“I am happy and very grateful for my new contract with East Bengal Football Club. I feel fortunate to have yet another opportunity to play international club football in a country where football is growing at a rapid pace,” Mitchell told TTFA Media on Saturday.

“Playing in the I-League is a great opportunity for me, especially playing for a team like East Bengal. They have won three national football league titles in India, eight federation cups among other competitions. I am excited to have the chance to play a season with them along with my compatriot Willis Plaza,” he added.

Mitchell has not been involved in the national team’s recent slate of World Cup qualfiers after suffering a groin injury which ruled him out of the home matches against Mexico and Panama and subsequently the USA and Costa Rica games. But with two crucial matches looming in September, Mitchell is hoping to force his way back into the set up.

Mitchell is the fifth T&T player to sign an overseas deal in the last month, with Jan Michael Williams, Jamille Boatswain, Daneil Cyrus and Darren Mitchell all making moves while Plaza recently signed on with Bengal to make a return to India.

“I have put a lot of work into my physical and metal recovery and I am ready to play football once again. Hopefully with a good training regime and a few games under my belt I will be knocking on the doors of the national team for selection once again.

” I think the team has been growing getting better every time the guys come together and been working under Dennis Lawrence and his staff. You can see it in the way the team played the past two games. I think once things go right, we can grind out two results in September and get ourselves back into a good position for qualification,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell scored a second half header in T&T’s 3-1 defeat to Honduras in the second match of the Concacaf final stage in San Pedro Sula last November. T&T will host Honduras on September 1st before travelling to face Panama in Panama City four days later.

“Crucial two weeks for us”

Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Team head coach Dennis Lawrence will begin preparations on Monday morning at Larry Gomes Stadium for the upcoming International Friendly with Jamaica scheduled to take place at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Thursday August 24th at 8pm.

Lawrence will begin training with a provisional squad before finalising his selection for the encounter with the Reggae Boyz who are coming off a strong showing at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in which they finished runners up, losing to hosts United State in the final.

Lawrence meantime is continuing to monitor potential call ups both at home and abroad for the final squad that will face off with Honduras in the September 1st World Cup qualifier at the Ato Boldon Stadium. Among them is defender Carlyle Mitchell who has played three matches for his new club East Bengal in the Indian League.

Mitchell is back from injury having made his international return with a scoring performance in the recent 3-0 defeat to Ecuador in Guayaquil. Mitchell is no doubt looking to make Lawrence’s final selection. He was T&T’s lone scorer in the 3-1 defeat to Honduras in the San Pedro Sula last November.

“ I think next two weeks are very crucial for us as individuals and as a team as we need to get it together and understand how the the coach wants us to play,” Mitchell told TTFA Media on Sunday  “Once we get this part of it right then I think we will be fine.

“The game against Jamaica on the 24th is a very good test for us. Playing against Jamaica is always difficult and we need a game like this because Honduras will not be any different and from this game the coach will have a fair idea who is ready for Honduras and who is not . We need performances and results as nothing less than three points for us on September 1st will be sufficient,” Mitchell added.

Playing at home needs to be a factor for T&T and Mitchell is banking on optimum fan support in both encounters.

“We know what it is to feel the home advantage both in our favour when we get that kind of support at home and also when we are away to these teams. They bring that added energy to any venue. I think when playing at home we can beat anyone as we just have to focus for ninety minutes and take our chances when they come.  Honduras is a difficult team but right now we need points so we have dig deep and get the job done,” Mitchell concluded.

Tickets to see T&T versus Jamaica are available at NLCB Lotto Locations nationwide priced at $100 (covered) and $50 (uncovered). Fans can also access early bird tickets for the Honduras qualifier at $300 (covered) and $150 (uncovered) and see the T&T versus Jamaica clash for no additional cost on that same ticket.

Mitchell says World Cup exit is his biggest disappointment
TTFA Media

The disappointment of the World Cup qualifying ambitions ending on Tuesday night in Panama City is obvious. And a day after his team conceded an own goal scored by him that put Panama 2-0 ahead, defender Carlyle Mitchell is holding his hands up with an apology.

Mitchell and his teammates along with Dennis Lawrence and his staff members, are coming to terms with the run of events over the past week.

“Firstly, I want to apologise to the nation and to coach Dennis Lawrence, his staff and my teammates for the way in way the results went,” Mitchell told TTFA Media.  “This has been the biggest disappointment of my career. I feel like I’ve let my country down, my teammates down and I will not pretend that we did things the way it was suppose to be. This is not something you just wake up in the morning and forget all about.”

“We had the opportunities to try and turn things around and make this happen for the country. I am a person who does not live with regrets because it is something that can stay with you for  life,” he said.

The former Vancouver Whitecaps player chose to express his feelings on the campaign overall particularly the six-games played in the “Hex” this year.

“It was a bit of a see-saw. We had our moments, some up, some down and we have to take responsibility for not being able to fulfil what we wanted to achieve in all of this. I think the coach and his staff gave it their all. They wanted this badly just as we as players wanted and unfortunately it did not work out for us. We have to reflect and recover from this for the benefit of everyone who cares about the country’s football,” Mitchell added.

i like dennis lawrence a lot and could only hope that his services are retained going forward but on this occasion he got it so wrong for those two very important matches. he failed by not using the same formula and the same team he imployed against Costa Rica and by replacing Carlos Edwards with Aubrey David in the right back position bringing in vilaroel instead of mikail by using Cato instead of lewis who knows that stadium better than cato and who's way more effective going forward and a higher skill level.

on the second game Dennis got it even more wrong when he started Phillips in goal and left the speedy Cyrus on the bench and went with sloppy caryle mitchel in the full back position and worst of all starting Willis plaza in the forward position when this guy has only ever scored an international goal against anguilla.......bloody anguilla leaving boatswain on the bench who showed greater talent linking up with the attackers against Costa Rica and honduras. there's one positive aspect that came from all of this, now Lawrence knows for sure who's capabable and who's fudder for the future going forward.

Carlyle Mitchell, Nathan Lewis sign with Indy Eleven
IndyEleven.com

Indy Eleven Professional Soccer announces the signing of defender Carlyle Mitchell and forward Nathan Lewis to its 2018 roster pending federation approval. Both Mitchell and Lewis arrive in Indianapolis from Trinidadian side Central FC.

“I’m very excited to work with Carlyle, again,” Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie said. “He was the second best in the K-League when I coached him in Korea. He’ll be an excellent defender that will bring a great goal threat on offensive set plays.”

“Nathan Lewis is a fast, dangerous winger, who is rated as one of the most exciting prospects in Trinidad & Tobago at the moment,” Coach Rennie said. “We're very happy that he has chosen to join Indy Eleven.”

30-year-old Mitchell returns to a Coach Rennie’s squad after previously lining up under the Scotsman during stints with Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps and Korean second division side Seoul E-Land. Additionally, Mitchell has played for former North American Soccer League’s FC Edmonton on loan. Mitchell started his senior career playing for Trinidad & Tobago Pro League team Joe Public FC. Prior to joining the “Boys in Blue”, Mitchell spent a short spell with Trinidad & Tobago club Central FC. Furthermore, Mitchell has made 35 appearances for the Trinidad & Tobago National Team, scoring three goals in all featured competitions.

Lewis has made several call-ups to the senior Trinidad & Tobago National Team, including roster appearances in 2018 World Cup qualifying matches against Panama, Grenada, United States and Costa Rica. In addition to World Cup qualifying opportunities, Lewis has also featured in CONCACAF Champions League lineups for Trinidad & Tobago. Aside from national team call-ups, the 27-year-old forward has found his feet in Trinidadian clubs Morvant Caledonia United, San Juan Jabloteh and most recently, Central FC.

Per club policy, terms of player contracts with Indy Eleven will not be released.

The Philippines Football League brought to you by Qatar Airways is the latest stop to what has so far been an exhilarating journey for Kaya FC-Iloilo defender Carlyle Mitchell.

The well-traveled former Trinidad and Tobago international was signed early this year by Kaya, reuniting Mitchell with former teammate Yu Hoshide who now handles the first team.

Mitchel and Hoshide played together at Joe Public FC. And while Hoshide has spent the last few years in the Philippines, the 33-year-old Mitchel has gone on to play in Major League Soccer, Canadian Premier League, K-League 2, and the Indian Super League.

That vast experience will surely come in handy as Kaya mounts another title challenge this season.

“It’s great to be back training and looking forward for the season.” said Mitchell in the latest episode of Kaya’s online show Back of the Net.

When you talk about experience perhaps Mitchell boasts of one of the most impressive resumes in the league.

He has gone up against Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi in an international friendly in Buenos Aires six years ago. Messi failed to score, but the La Albiceleste won, 3-0, in their final warmup before the 2014 World Cup.

“We lost that game,” said Mitchell, who appeared 39 times for his country. “But it was a good experience to be in the same pitch as one of the best players in the world.”

Mitchell instantly strengthened the Kaya backline as soon as he came in joining forces with veterans Masa Omura, Simone Rota and Camelo Tacusalme.

The Iloilo club’s defensive record in the AFC Cup early this year was proof of his impact.

The club conceded only one goal in their three matches before the competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With clubs returning to training under strict health protocols, Mitchell is setting his sights on a strong debut season in the PFL.

“The guys around me have experience as well, maybe we can win the league, no doubt,” he said.

I hope to never see that back line of Carlyle Mitchell, danial cyrus, Sheldon bateau, aubrey david and mikel Williams, these guys are way too inconsistent and lack concentrations. it’s quite obvious that these boys never worked on their skill set instead taking football for granted, as usual, and not putting in the work required to be a top class footballer.

another  mistake that i Hope fenwick never make is to invite marvin phillip back in the team, that bastard is the reason why we’ve lost 80% of our games when he was in goal, I would really hate it to see him back in the team.

So yeh terry. we want a whole new back line, a new set of goalies who play on a higher level and a total blanking of bums like leston paul, Daniel cyrus, Sheldon bateau, kavan george, cordel cato, in fact these are the only players I think should be back in the team.

Kevin molino, jovin Jones, neval hackshaw, tristin hodges, Alvin Jones, levi garcia, the telfer guy from canada, Daniel carr and hyland. everyone else, thank you for service.

Carlyle Mitchell and Kaya FC-Iloilo have qualified for the AFC Champions League for the very first time courtesy a 1-0 victory over Shanghai Port. They will be grouped with Thailand’s BG Pathum United FC, South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai, and Vietnam’s Viettel.

Carlyle Mitchell from TT,to USA and now Phiipines, they must be the weakest team in Asia,I can't help but mention yet again ,why do people take a dig at some of our players who play in India.I think our players can do as well in Thailand as they do in TT,there are much better crowds and our standing in world football is probably the same virtually.

But how yuh could say they’re the weakest team in Asia and they on top their league ( of which Qatar airways sponsor) ? Ah mean we don’t seem to even have a league going, we have. Tournament. What does it matter if we ain’t giving any of those Asian players a call anyway, let them work where they get it and possibly enjoy themselves. Less stress, more appreciation. I’m sure, they like everyone else would love to play in any UEFA clubs, but if no calls coming (top club or country), they have to make do and live their life. Wishing all of those guys the best, I admire them.
