Hazel Taylor Inducted into WBU Hall of Fame

 SALUTE YOU HAZEL...well done

T&T and Horizon Sports Club ace basketballer and netballer HAZEL TAYLOR who wore the Red, White and Black with pride and the Gold and Blue with love was inducted into the Wayland Baptist University Athletic Hall of Honour during ceremonies on Saturday.

She was recognised by her University as one of the most talented players in the history of the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens had a very unusual incentive that inspired her to always play her best: Pizza. Hazel Taylor hated it, and it seemed as if Johnna Pointer, Taylor's head coach, always ordered it as a post-game meal for the team after the Flying Queens lost a game.

"I never wanted to eat pizza or Mexican food," Taylor recalled, "and Johnna would buy pizza every time we lost."

Thankfully for her, that wasn't often.

   Halifax Rainmen welcomes back Haywood

 Joey Haywood

Halifax Rainmen (NBL Canada) inked 30-year old former Trinidad and Tobago international point guard Joey Haywood (185-82kg-84, college: St.Mary's). It is actually his comeback to Halifax Rainmen as he played here before. Haywood has a double citizenship as he also holds Canadian passport. Haywood already started the season at U.M.F. Grindavik in Icelandic Dominos League. In four games he averaged impressive 17.5ppg, 3.5rpg and 5.8apg this season. The last season he played at Aalborg Vikings (Ligaen) in Danish league. In 30 games he was the best scorer with remarkable 25.0ppg and recorded 3.9rpg, 3.4apg and 1.2spg. A very good season in his career as he was selected to Eurobasket.com All-Danish Ligaen Honorable Mention.
The previous (12-13) season Haywood played at Halifax Rainmen. In 40 NBL Canada games he had 14.5ppg, 2.8rpg, 2.6apg and 1.1spg in 2012-13 season. A very good year in his career as he was awarded USBasket.com All-NBL Canada Domestic Player of the Year and to the All-Star Game.
Among other achievements he played in the final of NBL Canada in 2012. Haywood received also All-Atlantic Division Player of the Year award back in 2011 at his college time. Haywood was a member of Trinidad and Tobago Senior National Team in 2010.
He is a very experienced player.
Haywood graduated from Saint Mary's University in 2011 and it is his fourth season in pro basketball.
His game is described as:  Joey Haywood is a lightning-fast, scoring point guard who is a nightmare to guard one-on-one. In 2014, he was the leading scorer in Denmark (25.0 PPG). Joey has an incredible handle and a first step which makes him very difficult to stay in front of. He is terrific in transition, where he gets to the rim at will, and is able to absorb contact and finish the play. Joey reads the pick-and-roll well - he turns the corner exceptionally quickly but also finds his big men and open shooters when he draws double-teams and when defenders hedge hard. If the defender goes under a screen, Joey can pull-up on a dime and knock down the three with great efficiency (40.8%). Joey is an exceptional defender, evidenced by his All-Defense Team selections in each of his first two professional seasons. Finally, Joey is a natural leader who always makes his coach's job easier and is a great role model in the community.

Macae Basquete (NBB) added to their roster 33-year old Trinidad and Tobago ex-international point guard Ian Young (191-81, college: Auburn). He played last season at Affrico Basket Firenze in Italian A2 Silver. In 7 DNA Silver games he recorded very impressive stats: 15.3ppg, 3.3rpg, 5.1apg and 1.0spg. Young also played at Aget Service (DNA Gold) in Italian league that season. In 18 games he averaged 14.4ppg, 3.1rpg and 3.2apg.
The previous (12-13) season he played at Al Ahly (Superleague) in Egypt.
In 2007 (two years after he left the college) Young was drafted by Iowa Energy (D-League) in ninth round (126th overall).
The former Auburn University star is in his tenth season in pro basketball.
The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others his team made it to the Puerto Rican BSN Cup final in 2013. Young was also voted Latinbasket.com All-CBC Championships 2nd Team back in 2009. He represented Trinidad and Tobago at the CBC Championships in Tortilla (BVI) five years ago.
Young is quite experienced player. He has played also professionally in Argentina, Bosnia, Dominican Rep., Finland (KTP-Basket), France (Quimper UJAP), Germany, Iran (Shahrdari Gorgan), Lebanon, Mexico (Lechugueros), Saudi Arabia, Venezuela (Gaiteros, Bucaneros and Estrellas Occidentales), Puerto Rico (Cangrejeros and Mets) and Dominican Republic (Indios de San Francisco).
On Young:  Very strong combination guard ... very good scorer ... can play the point guard position ... very good shooter ... good ball-handler ... good defender.

On January 5th, freshman point guard Khadeen Carrington (6-3) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. He also had a 11pts & assists performance in a previous game against St. John's.

Coming off the bench, Carrington averaged 14 points and two assists and was absolutely critical down the stretch in Seton Hall's win over Villanova. Carrington played hero in the Villanova victory. Down by two points with less than three minutes left, Carrington stole the ball from Nova's JayVaughn Pinkston and turned it into a fast break layup to tie the game. With the game again tied late, he put SHU back up with another layup. Then in overtime, he had his biggest moment, pulling a spin move in the lane and converting a layup off the glass to put the Pirates up one with 1:38 to play. He then calmly sank two free throws with under 30 seconds to go to put Seton Hall up three and up for good. He finished the game 9-for-10 from the free throw line and finished the week 16-for-18 there.

Meanwhile on January 13, Carrington was instrumental in Seaton Hall's late surge against Butler, scoring 14 of his season-high 20 points after halftime and adding two assists without a turnover in 36 minutes of action. However, the #12 ranked 'Hall' fell just short at the Prudential Center in overtime for its first home loss of the season, dropping a 79-75 to the visiting Butler Bulldogs in a wire-to-wire contest.

Jack hits 19pts!

Despite 19pts & 5rebs from 6-9 Kadeem Jack, Rutgers (10-9, 2-4) fell to Minnesota, 89-80, on Saturday afternoon at Williams Arena. Teammate Myles Mack was the sparkplug for Rutgers with a season-high 26 points and eight assists.

After halftime the Gophers started strong again, pushing their lead to double digits at 54-44. The Scarlet Knights cut into the deficit, but again Minnesota had a response, as consecutive threes pushed their advantage to 66-55.

RU responded with an 8-2 run as Jack converted a three-point play, making Minnesota's advantage 68-63. But the Gophers countered to extend that lead to 80-68.
A late push by the Scarlet Knights cut the deficit to 80-74 after a steal by Jack and finish by Bishop Daniels. Minnesota, however, would hold on for the victory.

Meanwhile, it was Jack tenth time in 17 games reaching double-figure scoring. His next game is Tuesday as RU host Michigan. The game will be televised live nationally on the Big Ten Network.

Hamilton top JUCO shot blocker!

Meanwhile, 6-11 centre Johnny Hamilton tallied 13rebs, 5blks & 12pts but Jacksonville Community College still went under 96-88 to San Jacinto College-Central on Tuesday 13th.
Currently, Hamilton has 51 blocks and enjoys an overall #1 ranking in NJCAA as well as in Region XIV conference where Jacksonville competes. He is averaging 4.6 blocks per game.

Hamilton, who is in his second season, previously played basketball for the Millennium Basketball Academy and St. Augustine High School in his native home land, Trinidad. During his domestic career Hamilton also led his club and former high school in block shots. He was also a member of the Ministry of Sport, Schoolaz Basketball team, which successfully completed in tournaments in Venezuela.

Shaka Smart to Texas: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

By Timothy Rapp

The Texas Longhorns haven't waited long to find a replacement for Rick Barnes, as the program will sign Shaka Smart to take over as head coach.

ESPN's Jeff Borzello reported the news:

Hank Kurz Jr. of the Associated Press reported that Smart still hadn't left the Siegel Center over four hours after his team meeting. However, Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs.com reported that Smart wasted no time on the recruiting trail as he offered 2016 recruit Bruce Brown a scholarship.

Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman reported the details of the contract:

Under Smart, VCU reached the Final Four in 2011, has reached the NCAA tournament in five straight years and won one CAA conference tournament and one Atlantic 10 conference tournament. It's safe to say he's completely transformed the program since taking over in 2009.

Texas' basketball program could certainly use a transformation. The Longhorns haven't reached the Sweet 16 since the 2007-08 season, also the last time the program won a Big 12 title. Under Barnes, fired March 28, Texas had never won a Big 12 tournament, though it did reach a Final Four and the Elite Eight two other times. It also won three regular-season titles.

Texas certainly has the resources to become a power, and Smart proved he could both recruit and coach with limited resources, so the Longhorns will expect him to bring the program back to national prominence.

His pressing defensive style and tendency to encourage his teams to play fast will certainly make Texas basketball far more entertaining to watch.

And perhaps a bring it national title, too.

This guy is a Trini, I guess. I honestly don't know him.

His father is Trini... but in true Trini style he wasn't a part of his life growing up.  Great opportunity for Smart, I like Rick Barnes, going back to his days at Providence, but I think his time had run its course at Texas.  Even so, he was able to recruit players like Tristan Thompson, Lamarcus Aldridge and Kevin Durant to play ball in Austin.  If Smart could recruit half as good as that, Texas will be tears.

She averaged over 9 points per game in her senior year in college basketball and shot 39% from 3-point range. Nowadays, she has a budding acting career but has a burning desire to play for the Red, White and Black. Her name is Keyla Snowden, a 5 foot 7 inch shooting guard who played for Akron and then Kentucky on the US collegiate circuit. She was on a recent visit home and spoke to Ian Wason about her goals.

She was on a recent visit home and spoke to Ian Wason about her goals.

good stuff, I really don't know what the NBFTT does with all this info, they seem incapable for sourcing foreign base athletes at any level.

Rowley played in the final of WCC Tournament in 2013.
He was also a member of Trinidad and Tobago international program for some years. Rowley played for Trinidad and Tobago Senior National Team back in 2009 and previously for U17 National Team in 2007.
He also represented Trinidad and Tobago at the CBC Championships in Tortilla (BVI) seven years ago. Rowley's team got to the Semifinals and his stats at that event were : 3 games: 3.0ppg, 2.3rpg.
Rowley has played previously for another Spanish team Zornotza.

George Washington expected to hire Maurice Joseph as full-time head coach

George Washington has offered its head coaching position to interim head coach Maurice Joseph and he is expected to accept, multiple sources told FanRag Sports.

There is no timetable on an official announcement.

One source said that retaining Joseph was always the first option for Colonials’ athletic director Patrick Nero and George Washington refused to hire a search firm for the process.

The 31-year old Joseph led the Colonials to a 19-14 overall record and 10-8 mark in the Atlantic 10 this season after taking over for Mike Lonergan, who was fired before the season.

Joseph was an assistant coach at George Washington prior to being given the interim head coaching position.

A Division I college player at one point, Joseph’s connection to George Washington is actually through the Lonergan, who the former played for while at Vermont. In two seasons with the Catamounts, Joseph was the team’s second-leading scorer with 13.9 points per game, helping Vermont to its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010.

When his college playing career was over, he would play professionally overseas, and represent Trinidad and Tobago, playing on its national basketball team in 2010.

The Colonials went 19-14 this season.

Pro round up

Guard Devaughn Akoon-Purcell was Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) top basketball player on the international pro-circuit. In Denmark, Akoon-Purcell had a team high 31pts and 8rebs as Bakken scored a comfortable 102-82 win over SISU on February 19. Currently, Akoon-Purcell is the leading scorer in the Ligaen League averaging 22.3ppg. While, Bakken remains in second position with an 18-3 record.

Another outstanding display came from Joey Haywood. In NBL Canada games, Haywood scored 16pts, 4rebs & 3 assists for Halifax Hurricanes in a 108-123 away loss to London Lighting on February 20. It was the best performance for the former 33-year old T&T point guard since his return to the pro-circuit in Canada early this year.

Down in Japan, guard Daniel Dillon (6-4) scored 10pts and 4 assists for Hiroshima in the Japanese B League D2. But in a losing effort the 2nd ranked Hiroshima D still went under to top-ranked Gunma 82-86 on February 18. The loss ended a 12-game winning streak for the Hiroshima Dragonflies.

While in Spain, center Kyle Rowley's Araberri went under to Huesca 71-75 on February 18. Rowley finished with 6pts & 6rebs. With the unexpected loss Araberri dropped to 10th ranked with a 12-12 record. While, Huesca improved to 16th place with a 6-18 record.

Mavericks add quality grad transfer

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UTA men's basketball program significantly enhanced its inside presence this season with the addition of 7-foot graduate transfer Johnny Hamilton.

A native of Rio Claro, Trinidad, Hamilton earned a bachelor's degree in sociology with a major in criminology in August from Virginia Tech, where he played just three games as a senior after suffering a thumb injury. He began his college career at Jacksonville (Texas) College, where he was among the national leaders in blocked shots. He has one season of eligibility remaining as a graduate student at UTA pursuing a master's degree in criminology and criminal justice.

"Johnny is an extremely athletic big man who has a chance to be among the elite centers in the Sun Belt Conference," said UTA head coach Scott Cross.  "At 7-feet, he obviously has tremendous height and length.  But, more importantly, he has good skills at both ends of the floor, great timing and will be an elite defender for us.  He is mature, experienced and gives us the flexibility and depth to be very aggressive on the defensive end of the floor.  We are very, very excited to have Johnny in our program and I cannot wait to start coaching him here at UT Arlington."

Hamilton, who only began playing basketball at the age of 16, started his college career under head coach Jody Bailey at Jacksonville. As a sophomore in 2014-15, he averaged 9.0 points and 8.9 rebounds and shot 61.7 percent from the field. He averaged 4.3 blocked shots per game and registered four or more blocks 16 times.

While at Virginia Tech, he played 17 games as a junior and averaged 1.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 7.2 minutes per game. Last season, as a senior, he played in just three games before suffering a torn flexor tendon in his left thumb.

Hamilton joins a UTA program that has won 52 games in the last two seasons, the second-highest total among NCAA Division I programs in the state of Texas. The Mavericks are coming off a season in which they went 27-9, won the Sun Belt regular season title and fell just four points shy of advancing to the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals.

nah, there is not a national league. Basketball is really being run by the zones. Sometimes the best teams in the zones will play a tournament style competition for the national champions but that doesn't happen every year.
the big tournament in those days you talking about was de Super10.These were the 10 best teams in de country. Fakoory, Rangers (football) and Sepos (basketball) owner use to run dat, but even he give up.

Bridgewater off to Weatherford College

T&T basketballer, Joshua Bridgewater has officially committed to Weatherford College in Texas to begin his athletic college career. The 19 year old recently celebrated the completion of his final year at Trinity Catholic High School in Hutchinson, Kansas in light of the institution's graduation ceremony over the weekend.

Bridgewater, who is from the Maloney Pacers Basketball Club and Youth Development Programme, has been enrolled in Trinity High's basketball programme for the past two (2) years. In his final year, he was instrumental in the team's successful run during the 2018 - 2019 season.

Averaging 8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, Bridgewater also had several standout performances throughout the year. He recorded a total of 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks as he helped Trinity High secure an easy 73-20 win over the Independent High School of Wichita in February, 2019.

On the 28th February, he was the second player to score in double figures, adding 12 points to the Trinity's 62-57 win versus Garden Plain High School in the sub-state semi-finals.
