Pfister to know fate today
Nigel Simon (Guardian)

Soca Warriors coach, Germany’s Otto Pfister will know if he has a future as T&T national coach when the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) holds a press conference from this morning from 7.30am.

The announcement is high on the agenda following T&T’s exit from 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification on Tuesday.

The press conference is also being hosted by All Sport Promotions Limited, the organising contracted to deal with the day-to-day affairs of the local deferation takes place at the Jaffa Restaurant, Queen's Park Oval, Tragarete Road.

At the briefing the T&TFF’s acting president  Lennox Watson is expected to make a statement on all aspects of the federaion and its national team, with the main topic of discussion being that on Pfister’s future. The Soca Warriors were beaten 2-1 in Guyana on Friday in their penultimate second round Concacaf Group B Brazil 2014 FIFA  World Cup qualifier.

Pfister and his players had a 2-0 victory on Tuesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo with goals from Kenwyne Jones and Lester Peltier, but it was all in vain as they ended second in the group with 12 points, one behind the Guyanese who advanced.

The exit by the Soca Warriors, meant the first time since the 1982 Spain World Cup campaign, T&T had failed to make it to at least the Concacaf semifinal round of qualification.

It is widely expected that Pfister will be replaced as speaking on Monday at a press conference Minister of Sports, Anil Roberts expressed his view that the 74-year-old Pfister who he deemed as a good coach should be shown the door.

This after he failed to get the team to its target of the World Cup Finals appearance in Brazil in 2014. Roberts noted that while he was in no position to tell the T&TFF what to do in terms of hiring and firing of technical staff and coaches, his Ministry was in no position to continue paying the elite performance salary of US$50,000 to Pfister to coach the team when they were out of the running for Brazil.

A former national swim coach, Roberts said the focus should now be shifted to development whereby local coaches should have the chance to prove their worth over the next three to four years.  Pfister who has been in charge of the team for only seven matches was hired at the end of the March following the sacking of former coach and T&T captain, Russell Latapy.

Latapy was fired as senior team at the start of December following a poor showing at the Digicel Caribbean Cup finals where the team suffered losses to Cuba (2-0) and Grenada (1-0) before beating Martinique (1-0) on November 30, 2010, but still failing to qualify for the Concacaf Gold Cup.

However, while he was hired in March, Pfister, the sixth national coach in six years (Bertille St Clair, Leo Beenhakker Wim Rijsbergen, Francisco Maturana, Russell Latapy) only got his first international match on August 21 versus India, eight months after the Martinique match and just under two weeks before the start of the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign against Bermuda, a 1-0 win.

Pfister then endured a torrid time with a number of players leaving on trials while he was helped by the delay in the start of the Digicel Pro League. His other results with the T&T team included two wins over Barbados (2-0 and 4-0) and a 2-1 loss away to Bermuda, which he cited as the major result for the team not progressing to the next round where powerhouses, Mexico, Costa Rica and El Salvador await.

How about a better headline for this article like "TTFF executive to know its fate today".

Imagine it’s the 6th national coach they have hired in as many years, no consistency?
And we could be on to the 7th by the end of today with no other than Anton in charge!!

I think its more than time for the TTFF executive to sack itself (resign) and make way for new blood who will not continue to make the same foolish mistakes over and over and again while expecting different results!

sacking this coach will be unfair. cuz he didn't had enough time to prove his worth with the team. trinidad and tobago is concern about the amount of money being spent on the coach, he is a elite coach and having a coach like this will bring value to the team and football in the country if the coach got dismiss, i know trinidad football will drop a lot. Firstly, the tt pro league needs to get better. improve and be invested.

Pfister not worried about future.
T&T Express Reports.

German Otto Pfister is not dismayed by a recent announcement by Sport Minister Anil Robert that his Ministry will no longer pay his US$50,000 a month salary now that Trinidad and Tobago have been booted out of qualification for the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

Speaking after T&T ended the campaign with a 2-0 win over Guyana at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Tuesday night, Pfister indicated that he is prepared to face whatever the future presents.

"I don't know what I do tomorrow, but in the whole world everybody plays football. For me it is not a problem," Pfister said. "It is not hard for me. It is hard for this staff that worked very hard, and for the local boys who are not in a very good situation. This is my problem. Myself, I don't have a problem, my future will always go on."

Rumours are that Pfister will be relieved of his job as T&T head coach after losing out on qualification to the next round of CONCACAF qualifying to Guyana, who topped Group B on 13 points, one more than the Soca Warriors (12 points).

Guyana edged T&T 2-1 in Providence, Guyana in the first-leg of their qualifying series on Friday night. And the German seemed to be endorsing one of his assistants, Anton Corneal as a possible successor.

"Look at Anton (Corneal), he is a FIFA instructor just like me. You have to give him power....you have to listen to him. It is not enough to give him a position," Pfister said.

Thats what happens when you have a government ministry directly paying the salary of a sporting official. In fact, the final decision lies with Roberts as to wether or not Pfister stay (on his $50K salary)...that decision would ultimately be the TTFF's if they were the ones paying Pfister's salary etc. Sports and politics dont normally mix well.

Guys, sorry to go off theme, but as I read this article I became more and more distracted by the spelling mistakes, lack of grammar and poor syntax. Eventually I lost concentration on the story and focused on the mistakes! So, here's a challenge...which forumite can spot the most mistakes? Winner gets a spell check function for their laptop!!

Maybe article was written & published in a rush and was never edited or reviewed by the editor?

No excuses though! Very low standards here from the T&T Guardian!

Watson in inaugural speech thanked Camps and stated how grossly disappointed the TTFF is at the early elimination of the Warriors.
Promised to take position seriously and work hard.
No word on Pfister.

How about this!!!! there appears to be alot of talk  of coach pfister age , and all other things associated , as some are  calling for his dismissal as coach, did anyone take  a moment to think , leo beenhakker was no more younger than coach pfister in addition to that beenhakker , brought along with him his assistants  to work in tandem with him , but i don;t wanna  get off the subject point am attempting to make, i do believe  it will be wise to keep pfister in some capacity . maybe  not necessarily as coach but someone in as a technical director , to assist with some of the issues that so urgently needs addressing with the local programme moving it forward , as he so carefully pointed in his briefing after the game, his points are spot on , that will be a common sense thing to do.... he has already now become a bit more familiar, he also pointed our some clear shortcomings with the pro leagues failings , also the lack of regular football being played, the need for more international friendlies. ... others shortcomings were also pointed out .  it will be unwise to get rid of pfister in haste simply because the warriors did not quaslify through to the next phase of concacaf qualifying ,  jeez it still hurts talking about it, but now is the time for all involved  locally to cool heads and do the responsible thing , whether or a decision is made to keep pfister on coach its not me to decide, thats a decision that will be made  by those decision makers , hopefully someone  in the mix will thereby make good use the mans  experience  ... he;s been there before he knows, . ...!!! the local footballing body will do well to keep  him in order to work in some capacity , along with a collection  of the most capable locally based coaches,  the very best at their disposal ,   should pfister be kept on  , when he leaves , there will be a unified, collective philosyphy on  how the national teams are to be playing . all in tandem  ..... as of now thats not there.. it just my suggestion... the infighting has to stop ... there in lies one of the problems with our football . too many egos at play... neglecting all the objective things that needs addressing  .... keep pfister
to assist with the developement of the programme at home , but as i said not necessarily as coach . its just my take ... jump in anyone ...what u guys think???? another hasty  firing won;t solve all the ills thats affecting  our football ..get the best personnel in place to work along with pfister there are many am sure that are capable . so pfister leaves  at least there will have set in place hopefully a certain style of play ..  yes we can...

where are all the critics who called for the heads of former coaches who failed to deliver ? Pfister is now being acclaimed as one of the best coaches to come to T&T !! ..based on what ? check the details of his resume ...african and asian teams and now one from caribbean ...yet some have him as one of germany's most famous imports ... way sah ! we accept anything dong here just send in your resume ...performance not a criteria to get fired .
In a serious world some of the best coaches in the world get fired .....that is not to say they are not good coaches becuse many move on to greater things ...del bosque got fired after winning la liga with real madrid ..the celebrations were still on when Real madrid sent him packing ...he had the last laugh though ...winning the world cup with Spain. I have my doubts though, as to the capabilities of a 73 year old journeyman coach who has coached more than 15 different teams/ countries in his lifetime ..but that is for another day .
fact is Pfister has to go if we are serious ........ the salary is beyond the ability of a a moribund organisation whose best known officials have resigned before corruption allegations could be investigated ( and this after serving for over 25 years )..... and they are expecting the taxpayers to fund their incompetence.
I dont agree with the sports minister on many fronts but on this one i stand firm with him ..we eh paying dat !
where all em peeps who were so emphatic that if you fail you sail !!! where dem ???

Of course I would, and I'm sure he is, if any are coming is his way.
And Leo came into the Germany campaign much later than this. We were already in the hex.

Maybe results, though very important, aren't everything to some people? The football under the last couple of coaches was dire. From most accounts, the team was (inconsistently) playing its best football in quite some time. Maybe that's a reason for some people to want to see what could develop with time? Not at that salary, though.

If Otto is willing to stay for $25,000 which is half of what he is getting then we could keep him up till the Caribbean Cup,after that we must look for a younger man.

Unfortunately those guys will never leave/resign from the TTFF executive on their own accord!

The TTFF is a gravy train and offers power and a relatively privilege life style for most of them!!
Government money, FIFA money and Sponsorship money (when tournaments come round and we are doing well) means that those guys will never resign from the TTFF executive on their own accord!
They need the position and power so they can continue to fill their pockets while retarding the development of our football, that’s their proven track record over the years and this will never change!

These guys have to be forced out democratically via the clubs and regional football associations so if we really want change that's where we need to focus first in order to stamp out corruption and lack of democracy and eventually being able to remove these corrupt self serving fellas in charge at the TTFF!

Doesn't look like the government will allow the TTFF to go bankrupt while Anil and Jack are in government! And we can’t rely too much on the 2006 WC players court case against the TTFF making them declare bankruptcy either because Jack and them could have influence on the judge leading the case with regards to giving them time to make the payments by installments!

Folks here who are based in T&T and complaining and really want change need to join the action and lend support to what the poster called "President" has been calling for on this forum over the past few months!

There is no other way so if we don’t want to heed what he is saying and join the action to help bring about that change via the clubs and Regional Football Associations especially if we are based home then we are not really serious about bringing about change in the TTFF and should stop complaining!

A lot of talk about Pfister's salary. Can anyone say what is the going rate for an international calibre national team coach?
I find allyuh should answer mose question, the man ask ah valid question and ppl only jumpin over it like ah mapappee in the middle of the pavement.

can you justify the title " international calibre national team coach " ? I am a little lost here ....

Justify? Or explain?
My reason for saying international calibre is that we all know that a local coach isn't going to cost anywhere near what Pfister is making. So if we were to bring in someone else what is it likely to cost us? And the reason I ask is that while I agree that $50k US/mth is plenty money, I don't think it's a lot for the job in question. I might be wrong as I don't actually know what national team coaches make so I was hoping somebody could point it out.

But Mose you can't use the US coaches, as they are always in Qualifier mode and always playing at a high level, hence their need for a top quality coach. Put that along side the decent developmental structure they have and it's makes it even more of a far reaching stretch to equate our needs of a coach with theirs.

But I never said anything about US coaches elan. I only referred to the $50,000US/mth that Pfister is being paid.

Very wide range breds.
This is some info for the coaches who took their national teams to the world cup in South Africa last year in USD:

- Fabio Capello (England): 9,900,000 USD/year
- Marcelo Lippi (Italy): 4,100,000
- Javier Aguirre (Mexico): 4,000,000
- Joachim Löw (Germany): 3,300,000
- Berter van Marwijk (Netherlands): 2,700,000
- Ottmar Hitzfeld (Switzerland): 2,600,000
- Vicente del Bosque (Spain): 2,200,000
- Carlos Queiroz (Portugal): 2,000,000
- Pim Verbeek (Australia): 1,820,000
- Carlos Parreira (South Africa): 1,800,000
- Dunga (Brazil): 1,250,000
- Diego Maradona (Argentina): 1,200,000
- Takeshi Okada (Japan): 1,200,000
- Ricki Herbert (New Zealand): 1,200,000
- Otto Rehhagel (Greece): 1,150,000
- Paul Le Guen (Cameroon): 960,000
- Marcelo Bielsa (Chile): 850,000
- Vahdi Halilhodzic (Cote d’Ivoire): 740,000
- Raymond Domenech (France): 720,000
- Hun Jung Moo (South Korea): 600,000
- Morten Olsen (Denmark): 570,000
- Milovan Rajevac (Ghana): 540,000
- Bob Bradley (USA): 400,000
- Radomir Antic (Serbia): 447,000
- Matjaz Kek (Slovenia): 360,000
- Gerardo Martino (Paraguay): 360,000
- Rabah Saadane (Algeria): 360,000
- Reinaldo Rueda (Honduras): 350,000
- Vladimir Weiss (Slovakia): 312,000
- Oscar Washington Tabárez (Uruguay): 300,000
- Kim Jong Hun (North Korea): 250,000
- Shaibu Amodu (Nigeria): 180,000

Pfister's salary falls just in the the lower half of that.
All things being equal, he is being paid very well.
When Carlos Quiroz was being interviewed for the job, he decided on Iran instead of the Warriors, you can see why.
Also note to mention is that some international coaches are paid very high who not on that list, eg Rijkaard-Saudi Arabia (5million a year), Guus Hiddink-Turkey (11 million a year), Jose Camacho-China (8million a year) etc etc.

IMHO, Pfister's salary is justified. Whether he is the right candidate is another question.

Pfister agent tweet this

Extremely encouraged that despite the disappointing tenure with T&T, there is plenty of interest in our client Otto Pfister.
