Title: Thread for the (CFU) Club Championship 2012.
Post by: Flex on February 07, 2012, 07:56:25 PM
Down to the wire - T&TEC, Caledonia in CFU spot decider.
ttproleague.com.

It’s down to the wire for Digicel Pro League clubs T&TEC FC and Caledonia AIA in contest for a final Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship qualifying spot with W Connection already snapping up one of the two spots.

W Connection leads the qualifying table with 21 points and faces Police FC on Tuesday afternoon from 8pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium, two points ahead of T&TEC and Caledonia (19 points).

NOTE: The qualifying table runs till the end of Round Two Match Day Seven of the Digicel Pro League Championship with points attained against Defence Force and Police FC in Round One matches not tallied.

T&TEC and Caledonia, only separated by goals difference, will face each other from 8pm in the second clash of a double header at the Larry Gomes Stadium—definitely the biggest meeting of the two clubs this season since the Final of the First Citizens Cup last October which Caledonia won 2-1 courtesy a pair of Kareem Joseph goals.

Since then the two teams met again in Round One of the League Championship in December and T&TEC stunned the Morvant/Laventille club to a 2-0 win with second half strikes by Kurlon Ferguson and Andrei Pacheco.

Caledonia definitely needs a win with a lesser goals difference, while a draw will see T&TEC join W Connection as the two Trinidad and Tobago clubs representing the twin-island republic at the CFU Club Championship which is scheduled to begin in March.

While Caledonia, equipped with the likes of strikers Jamal Gay, Conrad Smith, Trevin Caesar, midfielders Trayon Bobb, Stephan David, Abdallah Phillips, defenders Aquil Selby, Nuru Abdallah Muhammad, Kareem Joseph and Sheldon Emmanuel, remains in need for victory. It is T&TEC that suffered an upset defeat two days before Tuesday’s crucial clash.

The Dexter Cyrus coached ‘Electric Boys’ suffered a 1-0 defeat against Super League side St. Francois Nationals in the FA Trophy second round on Sunday at the Queen’s Park Oval, however Cyrus remains unshaken by the defeat.

“We’re going into the game to win,” he said. “And there isn’t any other way you can put it to the players.

We want to qualify for the CFU, so we have to deal with the pressures that come with it. If you want to play big football you have to play to win. It’s as simple as that.”

“Nothing could affect us at this point,” continued the T&TEC coach. “…because the guys want to win and be one of the teams representing Trinidad and Tobago in the CFU.

They (St. Francois) won on the day because our players’ focus was on Tuesday’s game. The magnitude of Tuesday’s game (against Caledonia) is so huge, that there wasn’t anything I could do to motivate the guys against St. Francois.

I think we have a formidable team. We also have a lot of depth and I am always optimistic. The management has also given the players a lot of confidence ahead of Tuesday’s game. It’s certain that Caledonia wants the win as well, so we just have to wait until the 90 minutes is over to know the result,” ended Cyrus.

T&TEC with a two-goal goals difference advantage boasts the likes of strikers Kerry Baptiste, Kurlon Ferguson, Andre Toussaint, midfielders Andrei Pacheco, Sylvester Teesdale, Romauld Aguillera and defenders Corneal Thomas, Akeem Adams, Kern Peters and Anthony Noriega which definitely predicts an action packed contest against the Jamaal Shabazz coached Caledonia AIA.

Prior to the Caledonia, T&TEC contest, North East Stars will take on Defence Force from 6pm at the Malabar venue in a rescheduled Round Two Match Day Four fixture.

Caribbean Football Union and Guyana's WCQ starts in March.

This would be interesting for Jamaal Shabazz.

I hope W Connection kill them.

T&TEC joins Caledonia, W Connection for CFU Club Championship.
ttproleague.com

Trinidad and Tobago has been granted a third qualifying spot for the 2012 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship following a request by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation.

The ‘special token’ was picked up by T&TEC FC (19 points) which finished third in the qualifying, joining fellow Pro League outfits Caledonia AIA (22 points) of Morvant/Laventille and W Connection (21 points).

It’s a debut for the ‘Electric Boys’ in the regional tournament, while Caledonia enjoys its second consecutive qualification and W Connection, a regular in the tournament during the last decade, have been the most successful club winning the tournament three times.

T&TEC FC manager Peter Mohan believes that his club is capable of making Trinidad and Tobago, the TT Pro League and the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission proud at the regional level by advancing into the CONCACAF Champions’ League.

He told ttproleague.com, “I am very confident that we will make T&T, the League and T&TEC very proud in the CFU by qualifying for the CONCACAF Champions’ League.”

Moham backed his statement by announcing that his club is currently in talks with a forward and defender.

“We have sufficient players, but for the CFU we are looking at two players which we are in discussions with. It’s a defender and a forward. We realize that we need more firepower, especially upfront looking at our past few games,” he added.

The CFU Club Championship is scheduled to begin in March.

“From the club’s perspective, being able to qualify for the CFU in our first season at the Pro League level is a really great accomplishment,” said the Football Club manager.

“We have already begun putting things in place for the tournament and looking at our budget because the first round is a home and away series and funding will come from the company (T&TEC).”

Excellent news for T&T football. 3 teams playing nice passing football and getting chance to match with central american teams if they get pass the qualifying rounds. Excellent exposure for many players just as we are on the verge of a landmark event to rid ourselves of a cancer in the TTFF. There is hope.

Well Group One has only 3 teams, so we can assume that TTEC will take up that 4th spot.

And probably since it was a late decision/special request, CONCACAF didnt update their site.

ah love it!!

Connection puts Lucozade Sport GS exit behind, focus now on CFU Club Championship
ttproleague.com.

Digicel Pro League Champions W Connection will travel to the sister isle of Tobago on Wednesday for a ten-day training camp in preparations for Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship matches early next month.

A 34-man roster will travel to Tobago led by head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier and coach Earl Jean and return to Trinidad on Friday 27 April.

W Connection and fellow TT Pro League compatriot Caledonia AIA are seeded sides along with Puerto Rico Islanders and Antigua’s Barracudas FC picking up automatic CFU Club Championship second round berths.

The second round will be contested from 1-6 May with two-time defending champion Islanders and Caledonia paired in one of the second-round groups, and Connection and Barracudas in the other, while first round winners will make up the four-team groups.

“We want to put a lot of focus on the Caribbean Club Championship,” said Fevrier. “We definitely want to try and win it. So we want to give the players the best possible preparation.”

Jan-Michael Williams, Aquelius Sylvester, Murilo Da Costa(goalkeepers), Hashim Arcia, Matthew Bartholomew, Akeem Benjamin, Rennie Britto, Jerrel Britto, Kern Cupid, Jelani Grosvenor, Jamal John, Joevin Jones, Elijah Joseph, Clyde Leon, Anthony Parris, Johan Peltier, Andre Quashie, Keon Quow, Kemuel Rivers, Gerard Williams, Kenaz Williams, Jomal Williams, Shahdon Winchester, Felinto Dos Santos, Kegan Ellis, Neil Benjamin Jr., Alvin Jones, Akeem Roach, Matthew Woo Ling, Damani Richards, Andrei Pacheco, Jamal Clarence and Christian Viveros makes up the 34-man camp roster.

“The players are in good spirits but with football the challenge is always ahead of you. We have a lot of young players and we need to refocus them and get the right mental attitude for the challenges ahead,” added the Connection coach in response to his decision for the Tobago camp.

A total of three matches will be played in a space of five days (1-6 May) in the second-round with the winners and runners-up of each group advancing into the CFU club championship finals May 23-27, with three teams qualifying for next season’s CONCACAF Champions League.

Speaking on the tight scheduled of three games on five days, Fevrier said, “I try to look for solutions. I don’t have control over those things.

I won’t take the easy way out and complain. I can’t dwell on three games in five days. As the coach, my focus is on trying to help to players prepare for this. If I complain then that would be passed onto the player. And when the players start complaining, then we won’t get the best out of them.”

Last Friday Connection suffered a 1-0 defeat against St. Ann’s Rangers at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in the quarter-final stage of the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield to exit the tournament won by the Fevrier coached side two seasons ago.

However the St. Lucian born coach welcomed the positives gained by the defeat saying, “Had we won (and advanced further into the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield tournament), it would have been a difficult situation for us in terms of preparations for the Caribbean Club Championship.

Having said that, we did play to win the match against Rangers but with everything in mind, we didn’t feel it as much. I thought we played well, but we didn’t have enough passion behind our play.”

Connection is likely to strengthen its squad ahead of the CFU second-round with former midfielders Andrei Pacheco and Christian Viveros.

According to Fevrier who admitted he wants to strengthen his squad, Pacheco who was released by T&TEC FC last month has indicated his desire to rejoin the ‘Savonnetta Boys’ and will make the Tobago trip while the club is working on reintroducing the 21 year old Colombian, Viveros back into the squad. Viveros is expected to join the camp on Thursday.

Charles-Fevrier banking on home support
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

St Lucian Stuart Charles-Fevrier is hoping that the local supporters come out and give his W Connection team that extra lift when it hosts Group Five of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship Second Round.

W Connection, winner of the tournament in 2001, 2002, 2006 and 2009, and also a two-time runner-up (2000 & 2003) will come up against Barracudas FC of Antigua, Victory (Haiti) and Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe from Sunday to May 10.

The matches will take place at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella on Sunday and Thursday while Tuesday’s double-header is carded for Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva from 5.30 pm on each day.

As part of its preparation for the tournament which will see two teams from the group advancing to the Final round series, W Connection enjoyed a 10-day training camp in Tobago during which, the senior squad registered a 6-0 win over Stokely Vale and 2-0 over a Tobago All Star line-up.

Commenting on his team’s readiness for the matches, Charles-Fevrier, who led W Connection to the league title its in club history in March shared that the camp was a very productive one and the guys are all in good spirit and looking forward to the matches.

Questioned as to which team he sees as his club’s main threat, Charles-Fevrier, a former T&T national team coach stated that all the clubs must be taken seriously.

“All the clubs I consider to be a danger because on the day, you never know what can happen as we are seeing in world football today,” said Charles-Fevrier.

With regards to the return of Colombian Christian Viveros and Andrei Pacheco to the team, the W Connection coach indicated that both players have fitted in well.

“They were part of our set-up previously so even though they played for other clubs before coming back to W Connection they both understand the way we play so it was easy for them to fit back in with the other guys,” stated Charles-Fevrier.

Looking ahead to the matches, Charles-Fevrier conveyed that he was confident that his very youthful team will step up to the challenge and do well while he also urged the local fans to come out and support the team.

“Playing at home has always given us a boost in this competition and this time around its no different as we aim to play our brand of attractive, entertaining football. So we are calling out all the football lovers to come out and give us their support,” ended Charles-Fevrier.

W Connection and Antigua Barracudas advanced to the second round after they were given first round byes. Inter Moengotapoe won its three matches in its First Round Group Two series against Curacao’s Hubentut Fortuna (3-2), Guyana’s Alpha United (1-0) and Guyana’s Milerock (7-1).

Victory, meanwhile won Group Three after it snatched a 1-1 draw with fellow Haitian club Baltimore to top the group on goal-difference after both teams ended with four points. This after Victory crushed Puerto Rico’s Bayamon FC 5-1 in its other match and Baltimore had a 2-0 win over the same Puerto Ricans.

Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA, the other T&T club in the competition will compete in Group Four at TE Mc Field Sports Centre, George Town, Cayman Islands alongside two-time defending champion Puerto Rico Islanders, Group One winner and host club George Town and Haiti’s Baltimore which advanced as the best runner-up from the three groups. Baltimore got the best runner-up ahead of Alpha United from Group Two.

This was because Groups One and Three both had a team withdraw, leaving them with three teams each compared to four teams in Group Two which meant the results of the last-place team in Group Two - Milerock - were voided and the standings recalculated.

That reduced Alpha United from six points to three in Group Two, same as Elite from Group One but one point behind Baltimore.

The top two from each second-round group will advance to a four-team final round, but only the professional clubs: the Puerto Rico Islanders, Caledonia AIA, W Connection and Barracudas will be eligible for the three berths in next season’s Concacaf Champions League per tournament regulations.

Let me try to understand this, only the Professional teams will advance, so why have this tournament, shouldn't they just have the 4 Professional Teams Caledonia AIA, W Connection, Puerto Rico Islanders and Antigua Barracudas just play that one round of matches and then the top 3 advance. So I suppose if the Pro Teams fail then we will have no Caribbean representative then in the Concacaf Champions League...smh!!!

Hey guys,

I'm just as confused as y'all, and will look more into it when I'm back in town.  (Traveling to Seattle for the Philadelphia Union game) Go Keon!

My information from speaking with one of the teams involved is that TTFF was trying to get three teams from T&T (instead of the usual two) into the qualifying stages, however at a meeting between CFU and Concacaf, CFU informed Concacaf about TTFF's request but Concacaf refused and T&T had to stay with the two teams.
Now because the deadline was fast approaching for the relevant Football Associations to submit their qualifiers, since they had already accomodated T&T by giving them additional time (the teams are supposed to be given to CFU by January 2012) and the TT Pro League qualifiers would have been decided in April/May 2012, a decision was made in December 2011 that the two top teams at the end of the second round of the TT Pro League would qualify and the two teams were W Connection & Caledonia AIA. This was conveyed to all of the teams and so they were all aware.
We have to understand that this happened because of the change of the end of the League's season from December to April/May.
T&TEC however by virtue of placing second in the Pro League for 2011/2012 qualify alongside W Connection for next year's Competition.

Them fellahs in Haiti does compete seriously with the absolute minimum of resources.

Excellent result. Time to dominate this CFU business, win money to participate in CONCACAF Club Championship, get international exposure for the youtmen ballers and get a few players seen in the recruiter shopwindow and make some money for the club and get some ratings for T&T players that pave the way for others.

Islanders hold Caledonia.
T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago's Caledonia AIA opened their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Champions challenge with a 0-0 draw against two-time defending CFU Club Champions Puerto Rico Islanders on Monday night at Annett Field, Cayman Islands.

The tournament was hit by the late withdrawal of Haitian champs Baltimore Sportif. Caledonia were supposed to play the Haitians on Monday.

As a result of Baltimore's withdrawal, the tournament will now be contested between Caledonia, Puerto Rican Islanders and Cayman club George Town, with the top two teams in the group advancing to the next round.

Caledonia AIA, currently with one point, meet George Town SC from 9.30 tonight, while Puerto Rico Islanders and George Town end the series on Friday night. A victory tonight will see Caledonia through to the next round.

The group opened Monday night with the goalless draw between Caledonia and the Islanders, a match played in a downpour. More than eight inches (20 centimetres) of rain fell on Grand Cayman on Monday, forcing the closing of all public primary and secondary schools Tuesday.

Second Round–Group 4 Fixtures

Today

Caledonia AIA vs George Town SC, 9.30 p.m., Annett Field

Friday May 25

George Town SC vs Puerto Rico Islanders, 9 p.m., Annett Field

Indeed, It's unfortunate, the Haitian would of made the tournament more interesting, the Haitian team had eliminated both Trini teams(Defensive Force and Caledonia) Last year..it would of been interesting to measure against Haitian this year again..

Even traveling to Jamaica is not easy...there is no direct fly between many Islands....Haitian don't go to Trinidad and Jamaica and Trinis and Jamaican don't go to Haiti to visit unless it is sport related....Just recently that Haitian team Victory that made it to Trinidad went through hell to reach Trinidad.. The players had to travel in three different planes in three different countries to reach Trinidad..

By the way you're not funny Sam...about swimming to Florida..The Cubans do that...
the Haitian catch the boat...LOL

Connection, Caledonia awaits CFU final leg fixtures.
ttproleague.com

It seems the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) has a very tedious task in scheduling the CFU Club Championship final leg which qualifies three clubs for next season’s CONCACAF Champions’ League.

TT Pro League clubs W Connection and Caledonia AIA and United Soccer League (USL) clubs Antigua Barracudas and Puerto Rico Islanders are all into the Club Championship final-four round which would also reveal the 2012 Caribbean champions following a round robin format.

It is understood that with the USL season still in motion, the CFU in dialog with all four clubs are looking for the most suitable window to schedule the final round in either June or July with Trinidad already agreed upon as the host country.

Two-time defending CFU Club Champions, Puerto Rico Islanders qualified out of Group Four contested in the Cayman Islands from May 21-25 along Caledonia while home side George Town finished without a point in the group which featured just three teams following a pullout by Haitian club Baltimore.

Caledonia played to a 0-0 draw against Islanders in the opening match and in the second match, the Morvant/Laventille slapped late a 5-0 win over George Town.

Assistant coach Jerry Moe told ttproleague.com, “Against Islanders it was a high standard and high intensity clash. We did well and restricted them to chances from distance.

In the second match against George Town we were wasteful in our chances, but the second half we had it all together in terms of the tempo and the finishing.”

Strikers Devorn Jorsling (47th and 70th minutes) and Trevin Caesar (72nd and 76th minute) got a pair of goals each and one from Conrad Smith (80th minute) completed the Caledonia victory.

W Connection, the 2011-12 Digicel Pro League Champions, qualified out of Group Five contested in Trinidad between May 6-10 by defeating Haitian club Victory SC 2-0 and hammering Surinamese side Inter Moengotapoe 6-0 despite going under 1-2 its final group match against Barracudas which needed full points to qualify.

So wait, CFU only gets two spots while central and north america gets the brunt of the places??!!  :pissedoff:  something real fackin rotten and disrespectful about that! same with the gold cup, the north americans don't have to qualify for the tournament, while central america despite having way less teams than CFU, gets to have 5 spots.

the caribbean nation on the other hand, make up the bulk of the teams in concacaf, and yet gets the least amount of spots in all tournaments, someone needs to change these unfair policies, and yeah, the gold cup needs to start hosting in other concacaf nations, and fack the financial repercussions!

I think once you reach the group stage, all costs are covered. And next season, teams will automatically enter the group stage. Its the CFU rounds that put financial pressure on teams.

Interesting that the 3rd place CFU team get to play Galaxy. If they get their act together, that could pull in more sponsorship than the whole ProLeague season! Anybody know the dates of the group stages?

W Connection & Caledonia to host the final round of the 2012 CFU's Club Champions Cup ahead of the Concacaf Champions league.
W Connection Release.

The final round of the Caribbean Football Union’s Club Championship Cup will once again be hosted in Trinidad and Tobago.

Having qualified for the final leg of this competition, the two local teams that participated in the group stage, W Connection Football Club, and Caledonia AIA were selected by the CFU to be the hosts for the competition which has been scheduled to kick off on June 19th 2012 at 6:00 pm.

W Connection FC has won the Caribbean Club Champions’ Cup on four occasions in 2001, 2002, 2006 and 2009 and were the runners up in 2003. This tournament represents the qualifying stage for the prestigious CONCACAF Champions League which is the highest level of club football to be played in the Caribbean Central American and North American region.

The Puerto Rico Islanders, and Antigua Barracudas will face these two Pro League teams as they all vie for a spot in the CONCACAF tournament carded to start at the end of July 2012. The PR Islanders are the defending champions of the Caribbean Championship title having won in 2011 and 2010. They were runners up in 2009.

On Labour Day, Tuesday June 19th 2012, Caledonia AIA will meet the Antigua Barracudas centerfield at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium at 6:00 pm, and WConnection FC will face the Puerto Rico Islanders at 8:00 pm at the same venue.

The losing teams of each match will then play at 6:00 pm for a third place spot on Thursday 21st June. The first and second place teams will be decided by an 8:00 pm matchup between the two winning teams from Tuesday’s games. All games will be played at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams will be placed into separate groups of the CONCACAF Champions League which were decided by a draw at their New York offices on June 5th 2012. The CFU teams were placed using CFU 1, CFU 2, and CFU 3 as a final round was yet to be played.

Connection, Caledonia defend T&T football in CFU semis tonight
… P/Rico and Antiguan clubs in the way at Marabella
By LASANA LIBURD (wired868.com)

“From a Trinidad and Tobago standpoint, we are out of the Olympic and World Cup qualifying campaigns,” said Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA coach Jamaal Shabazz. “So this gives us a chance to still keep in touch with the top teams in the CONCACAF region.
“For us and W Connection, qualification is more than just for our clubs.”
Caledonia AIA and W Connection will figuratively hoist the Trinidad and Tobago flag this evening in Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship semifinal match-ups against Antigua Barracuda and Puerto Rico Islanders from 6 pm and 8 pm respectively at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.
The winners qualify automatically for the CONCACAF and meet in Thursday’s final at the same venue while the losers meet in a decisive play off on Thursday. Three of the four competing CFU clubs will advance.
The CFU champions will join a three team group that includes United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Seattle Sounders and Honduran club, Marathon. Seattle employs Trinidad and Tobago under-23 attacker Cordell Cato and US striker Eddie Johnson.
The CFU runner-up will face top Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara and Guatemalan team Xelaju while third place wins a date with England star David Beckham’s LA Galaxy and El Salvador’s Isidro Metapan.
Connection coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier and Shabazz hope a good showing from the two Pro League teams at CONCACAF level can provide impetus for the stuttering local game.

Caledonia beats Barracuda to CONCACAF berth.
By Lasana Liburd (wired868).

Second half goals from Radanfah Abu Bakr and substitute Devon Jorsling created another piece of history for Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA tonight in Marabella as the “Eastern Stallions” qualified for the CONCACAF Club Championship with a 2-0 win over Antigua Barracuda in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) semifinals.

Barracuda was fast, energetic and resolute but rarely threatened as Caledonia reaped the rewards for its ambition down either flank.

W Connection trounce P/Rico Islanders for second CONCACAF spot.
By: Lasana Liburd (wired868).

The Trinidad and Tobago Pro League is assured two of three CONCACAF Club Championship spots available after Neal & Massy Caledonia and W Connection were both victorious in tonight's Caribbean Football Union (CFU) semifinal fixtures in Marabella.

Second half goals from Radanfah Abu Bakr and substitute Devon Jorsling created a piece of history for Caledonia AIA as the "Eastern Stallions" qualified for the CONCACAF tournament with a 2-0 win over Antigua Barracuda at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

And Connection was even more emphatic as the "Savonetta Boys" whipped Puerto Rico Islanders 4-1 in the second match of a double header.

Connection and Caledonia will meet from 8 pm on Thursday in the CFU finals while Barracuda and the Islanders will fight for one spot from 6 pm at the same venue.

Barracuda was fast, energetic and resolute but rarely threatened as Caledonia reaped the rewards for its ambition in the opening fixture.

Caledonia left winger Trayon Bobb and adventurous right back Kareem "Tiny" Joseph repeatedly stretched the Antiguan team before Cornelius Stewart conjured up the opener from the right wing.

Stewart, a St Vincent and the Grenadines international, gave a patchy performance on the night but produced a brilliant cross in the 64th minute and Abu Bakr, who snuck forward from central defence, rose to head the ball down to the left of goalkeeper Molvin James for the opener.

Caledonia did not keep the ball as well as coaches Jamaal Shabazz and Jerry Moe might have liked and lively Antiguan international striker Peter Byers kept the back four honest. But Jorsling came off the bench to settle the home team's nerves in the closing minutes.

Connection whip Puerto Rico Islanders 4-1 to reach CONCACAF Champions’ League.
ttproleague.com.

Winger Rennie Britto scored twice and set up another as W Connection hammered Puerto Rico Islanders 4-1 in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship semi-final round on Tuesday night.

The victory secured Connection’s place in the CONCACAF Champions’ League and set up an all Trinidad and Tobago CFU Club Championship Final with Caledonia AIA which kicks off from 8pm on Thursday at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

Caledonia defeated United Soccer Leagues(USL) PRO club Antigua Barracudas 2-0 with second half goals by Radanfah Abu Bakr and substitute Devorn Jorsling in the earlier semi-final at the Marabella venue.

And in the second contest, Digicel Pro League Champions W Connection made easy of the North American Soccer League (NASL) club PR Islanders.

R. Britto fired Connection ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute with a superb curling effort which left a fully stretched Islanders goalie Richard Martin beaten at the far netting.

Martin was earlier tested in the 10th minute pulling off a save against a strike from distance by Connection left wing back Joevin Jones, and made another shutout in the 45th minute denying a solid strike by R. Britto.

Connection then doubled its advantage 2-0 by the 57th minute completing an excellent buildup with Jerrel Britto holding off a defender on the left and blasting a shot past Martin.

A minute and a half later strike teammate Hashim Arcia tamed a shot into the hands of Martin after slipping past a his marker inside the area.

Islanders were lucky not to concede another in the 62nd minute when midfielder Clyde Leon shaved a shot just wide of the upright with a strike from distance.

However the visitors sank to another item in the 66th minute as Connection celebrated a 3-0 score in spectacular fashion with R. Britto completing his double by latching onto a perfectly placed Arcia through-ball and finishing over an advancing Martin.

Islanders didn’t give up the fight with former Connection striker Jonathan Fana Frias and substitute Gregory Richardson, also very familiar with Trinidad and Tobago club football, creating problems for the home-side.

The visitors finally pulled a goal back in the 72nd minute with a superb half volley by substitute Joshua Hanson taking comfortably inside the area and hitting past goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams at the near post for a 3-1 score-line.

But the goals didn’t stop there.

In the 90th minute Arcia deservingly got his name on the scoresheet to complete the score 4-1 by finishing into an exposed net and had R. Britto to thank after the winger unselfishly opted to the open striker following a good breakthrough.

Connection, four time (2001, 2002, 2006 & 2009) CFU champions, now looks ahead to Thursday’s Final, while Barracudas and PR Islanders will take on eachother in the third place fixture from 6pm.

The CFU champions will join a group that includes Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Seattle Sounders and Honduran club, Marathon. Seattle employs Trinidad and Tobago U23 attacker Cordell Cato and US striker Eddie Johnson.

The CFU runner-up will face top Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara and Guatemalan team Xelaju, while the CFU third place joins David Beckham’s MLS club LA Galaxy and El Salvador’s Isidro Metapan.

Caledonia qualifies for CONCACAF Champions’ League

How high would Caledonia AIA lift the bar this season, remains the question as the Morvant/Laventille club continues to ride success.

On Tuesday night the club added to already its most successful season by securing its berth into the CONCACAF Champions' League—a lifelong dream of the Jamaal Shabazz coached Caledonia—by reaching the Final of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship.

Second half goals by defender Radanfah Abu Bakr in the 64th minute and substitute Devorn Jorsling in the 87th minute secured a comfortable 2-0 win over USL PRO outfit Antigua Barracudas in the CFU semi-final round at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

Caledonia will meet second semi-final winner and fellow TT Pro League compatriot W Connection in the Final on Thursday from 8pm at the same Marabella venue.

Connection now also into the CONCACAF Champions’ League reached the CFU Final by trashing two-time defending champs Puerto Rico Islanders 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Rennie Britto found the back of the net on either side of the half (27th and 66th minutes) against the Puerto Ricans and set up another in the 90th minute which was converted by striker Hashim Arcia; and Connection’s second in the chain of goals was scored by U-23 striker Jerrel Britto in the 57th minute.

Islanders’ lone item came in the 72nd minute from a well taken strike by substitute Joshua Hansen, however it wasn’t enough of a comeback by the USL division one club.

Islanders and Barracudas will meet from 6pm on Thursday in the crucial third place playoff of the CFU tournament with the winner advancing into the CCL which begins at the end of July.

The CFU champions will join a group that includes Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Seattle Sounders and Honduran club, Marathon. Seattle employs Trinidad and Tobago U23 attacker Cordell Cato and US striker Eddie Johnson.

The CFU runner-up will face top Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara and Guatemalan team Xelaju, while the CFU third place joins David Beckham’s MLS club LA Galaxy and El Salvador’s Isidro Metapan.

Barracudas vs Caledonia Match Play Caledonia had a smell of goal just two minutes inside the match however a tardy effort by striker Jamal Gay clattered into a Barracudas defender after meeting Cornelius Stewart's pass from the right.

Caledonia’s Guyanese goalie Ronson Williams then mishandled a tame low freekick from distance by the Antiguan side in the 6th minute, giving away a corner which later proved little threat.

The Digicel Pro League third place finisher and winner of the First Citizens Cup, FA Trophy and Lucozade Sport Goal Shield domestically, then had its first real attempt on goal in the 15th minute.

Striker converted into midfielder Keyon Edwards had a crack from outside the area missing the crossbar by a couple inches when he connected to a loose ball which was threaded through two Barracudas defenders by Gay.

The home side then won a set piece some 24 yards out after a foul on attacker Trevin Caesar, however right wingback Kareem Joseph curling effort was too high to trouble goalkeeper Molvin James.

Following a goalless half the second period continued with little efforts at goal until the introduction of Jorsling in the 56th minute.

Seconds after replacing U-23 forward Caesar, the T&T international forced Barracudas goalie James into action with a low strike from just inside the area.

James’ goal was under threat again in the 62nd minute with attacking right-back Kareem Joseph finding the side netting.

Caledonia finally broke the deadlock 1-0 in the 64th minute when a well placed cross by talented Stewart was headed into the back of the net powerfully by Abu Bakr, leaving James shattered.

However James rebounded to deny Joseph in the 73rd minute and measured a fine strike by Jorsling 11 minutes from time, but was beaten a second time in the 87th minute.

Jorsling slapped in Caledonia second from side the area for a 2-0 finish overcoming an unyielding effort by Barracudas.

Two things I hope Tallman, e-man or someone else could clear up for me.

1. If you look at this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6k-cdaiuQnU) you will see the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium is spelt Manny. Can anyone confirm it as the right spelling ? for years the media have used both.

2. I am not taking anything away from one of the Caribbean most successful teams, however, I think ?? Defence Force won the CFU Cup in 2001 and W Connection were runners up, can anyone confirm ?

Thanks in advance.

Islanders Face Must Win in CFU Thursday

Puerto Rico Must Win to Qualify For CONCACAF Champions League

The Puerto Rico Islanders continue their pursuit of a 2012–13 CONCACAF Champions League berth with a match versus Antigua Barracuda FC in Trinidad and Tobago. The winner of the match secures 3rd place in the CFU competition and an automatic Champions League berth, while the loser will be eliminated. The Islanders have qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League each of the past four seasons.

The Islanders are coming off a disappointing 4-1 loss Tuesday night to W Connection of Trinidad and Tobago in the semifinals. In NASL action, the Islanders lost top spot in the standings, falling 2-0 to San Antonio at the weekend. With no time to dwell on the consecutive losses, the Islanders will have to win Thursday in order the keep the team's impressive run of consecutive Champions League qualifications going.

“Obviously everybody is disappointed after the loss last night but now is not the time to dwell on the past but to stay positive moving forward. There are many other teams that would like to be in our position knowing that with a win, we would be in the Group Stage with Isidro Metapan and LA Galaxy. Sure the boys may be a little down but we are not out. I know one thing for sure, I will have the team fighting with me on Thursday,” said Head Coach Adrian Whitbread.

The Islanders entered the competition as the two-time defending champions of the tournament, having won the 2010 and 2011 editions back-to-back. However, the Islanders will have to settle for third place in this year’s competition.

Antigua Barracuda FC of USL PRO is currently tenth in the eleven team league with just six points from ten matches. This past weekend they were defeated by Orlando City SC 2-0 and then followed that up with a 2-0 loss to Caledonia AIA in the CFU semifinals

I have always used Manny.

As you pointed out, it's on the stadium scoreboard. On google, "Manny Ramjohn" yields almost three times as many hits as "Mannie Ramjohn". The T&T Hall of Fame has him listed as "Manny Ramjohn". His entry in Wikipedia uses Manny. Official FIFA match reports has it listed as Manny…

Actually, there wasn't any real winner of the 2001 CFU Cup. Defence Force and W-Connection won their respective groups and were supposed to meet in the final, but the match was never played.

Nah, Manny Dookie was the barefoot runner. There was a club called Dookie School of Athletics from St. James that was functioning up to the 70's. Manny Ramjohn was the first Trini to win a gold medal in an international meet. I think it was the CAC games in Baranquilla.

The fact that Puerto Rico have been CFU champions for the past two years (2010 and 2011) and they also won the title in T&T. PR plays in a better league and they have on paper a better team, now this has to be a major achievement from both T&T clubs.

I wanted to see W Connection as champs, but Cali is a T&T club, so its not that bad.

Good luck to both teams, W Connection has always made us proud at this level, hopefully Cali do the same.

Best news out of T&T football in a long time. Really big big achievement for two T&T teams to be kings of the caribbean, surpassing Puerto Rico Islanders and the "Antigua National team" and now well on their way to get exposure to the "big boys" in Mexico and USA and exposure on US TV for scouts. This is the break for Gay, Jorsling, Britto and crew. Another break for Theobald too.  Boost for the T&T Pro league as players experience this and come back with more confidence and professionalism and other teams like North East Stars believe that they can do this too. Boost for fans. Boost for Socawarriors.net. Good stuff. Look out for 3 T&T teams next time around.
