One of the very first calypso recordings with vocals (a kalenda) recorded in 1914.
This kalenda is accompanied by tamboo bamboo and bottle & spoon which were the main instruments that poor ex-slaves could have afforded before they developed the steelbands after tamboo bamboo was banned. It is also interesting to note that the African drum was temporarily banned in Trinidad by the colonialists leading to ex-slaves developing the Tamboo Bamboo.
The older kaisos from before calypsos started being recorded were sung in a French-African dialect (patois) and were mostly stick-fighting songs or kalendas as they were then called that were sung by the ex-slaves during stick-fighting competitions. In fact many of the very first kaisonians were also stick-fighters who fought and sung to show their prowess in the stick-fighting ring and to attract the admiration of the opposite sex.

Also most folks don't know that calypso was one of the first music genres to be recorded in stereo after the development of stereo recording technology for commercial use during the early 1900’s.

This is a sort of castillian sounding calypso instrumental from Trinidad recorded in 1914.
This recording shows the early Spanish/Latin influence on calypso music.
It also shows the close connection between early calypso music and what we now called Parang.

Check out these historical recordings!!
Lovey's String Band 1912 - 1st Historic Calypso Recordings with some history of the band!
http://www.youtube.com/v/ZBC_tNuPZ-o
Some interesting facts.
The first calypso recordings above were made 5 years before the very first jazz recordings and the Americans came to Trinidad to do follow-up recordings. In other words they were quite impressed with Calypso.
So could Calypso have inspired the first early jazz musicians in America before the influence started to happen the other way around?
What we know for sure is that calypso and jazz are like brother and sister and that jazz went in the instrumental direction while calypso went in the lyrical direction but they both sounded quite similar in the early 1900's.

Atilla the Hun & Lord Executor - Iere Now and Long Ago
http://www.youtube.com/v/c58CFVkuUgM
Here is an interesting fact.
Trinidad's original Amerindian name was Iere so when you here Rasta's saying everything is “irie” it is the same word with a slight misspelling and they are actually talking about Trinis.
In other words to be Iere/Irie is to be like a Trini! ;)
-
Hear how close some of the early calypsos sounded to jazz music?!
As I said both genres are like brother and sister but jazz went more in the instrumental direction while calypso went more in the lyrical direction!
