Title: T&T Olypmic Contingent Announced - TTOC targetting 5 medals!
Post by: Socapro on June 29, 2012, 11:10:43 PM
I think there could be a couple more names to be added to the Athletics squad as the deadline for final list of Olympic qualifiers in individual T&F events is Sun.8th July and some more athletes may still attain the required Olympic standard in their events between now and that date.

Trinidad and Tobago will take their largest contingent to an Olympic Games when a team of 31 heads to London 2012 next month for the Games of the 30th Olympiad.

The last contingent in Beijing 2008 was 30. And with 26 track and field athletes, as well as competitors in the disciplines of boxing, cycling, sailing, shooting and swimming, T&T will be represented by the biggest-ever team.

There were few surprises as first-timers, boxer Carlos Suarez, sprint cyclist Njisane Phillip, sailor Andrew Lewis, and experienced Olympic campaigners, shooter Roger Daniel and swimmer George Bovell, have been confirmed for the Games.

Keston Bledman, Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson and Marc Burns and Rondell Sorillo will form the sprint team, while Emmanuel Callendar and youngsters Deon Lenore and Jamol James are on the 4x100m squad.

Jehue Gordon is T&T's 400m hurdles hope, while outstanding javelin thrower Keshorn Walcott has earned the confidence of the National Association of Athletics Associations and will head to London.

Among the women, Kelly Ann Baptiste, Semoy Hackett, Kai Selvon and Michelle-Lee Ahye will lead the charge in the 100m and 4x100m events. Josanne Lucas will attempt both the 100m and 400m hurdles events.

And in the field, triple jumper Ayanna Alexander and veteran shot putter Cleopatra Borel-Brown will compete for T&T.

Most of the athletes will go into a pre-Games camp in Cardiff, Wales, while the team will assemble in London by July 23. The Games open on July 27.

Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) president Larry Romany, who made the announcement last evening at TTOC House, has big expectations for the squad and is hopeful the team can break the national record of three Olympic medals at a single Games, secured in 1964.

The new number Romany is hoping for is five medals.

"Our expectations are high in terms of what the medal potential will be, specifically in the relays," Romany stated after the announcement. "The 4x100m men and women, the 4x400m men and coming off of last weekends record-breaking run in the 4x400m (men), we are really excited by the potential at the Games."

Romany said the TTOC had projected a possible contingent of 80 athletes, but T&T's hockey teams and Olympic footballers failed to get past the final hurdle of Pan American qualifying. Still he is optimistic at T&T's chances in London.

"Unfortunately for us we did not realise the team sports, and we are going to have to work harder at it for the 2016 Games. However, the team that has finally emerged is an extremely strong team. We're very happy with the results we have received to date."

TEAM T&T:

31 T&T athletes heading to London
Published: Saturday, June 30, 2012

T&T will carry a team of 31 athletes from six disciplines along with 23 officials to the 2012 London Olympics, which will take place from July 27 to August 12. This was revealed during a press conference at Olympic House on Abercrombie Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. Of the contingent, 26 track and field athletes have been selected, including Olympic 100m silver medallist Richard Thompson, reigning national Men’s 100m champion Keston Bledman, World Junior Championships 400m Hurdles champ Jehue Gordon and World Championships Women’s 100m bronze medallist Kelly-Ann Baptiste. Thompson and Bledman will be joined by 200m national champion Rondel Sorrillo, Marc Burns and Deon Lendore in the 4x100m event, for which T&T took the silver in Beijing four years ago.

Also making the squad were Olympic Individual Medley bronze medallist George Bovell (Swimming), two-time FCB Sports Foundation Sportsman of the Year Roger Daniel (Shooting), multiple Pan American gold medallist Njisane Phillip (Cycling), American-born fighter Carlos Suarez (Boxing) and Andrew Lewis, the first local sailor in 48 years to qualify for the Games. Phillip, fresh from a record-breaking performance in Colorado last weekend, is one of just eight international cyclists to have made the shortlist for the Match Sprint. Speaking during yesterday’s conference, president of the T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC) Larry Romany was confident the squad would go down as one of T&T’s most successful at the Olympics. “The team that has emerged is an extremely strong one. We are very excited about the potential and our expectations are high,” he said. “I think that sport in T&T is on an upward trend and we are hoping that we can break the T&T record from 1964, when we won three medals. We feel that five medals is something that’s very realistic.”

He added that behind the scenes, everything had been going according to plan. “We have had fairly smooth sailing and we don’t expect any hiccups in management so at this point in time we are ready to go.” TTOC secretary general Brian Lewis pointed out that T&T’s 50th Anniversary of Independence would provide extra motivation for the athletes. “It’s been a long road for the athletes who have come through the process but the journey really gets tough now,” he said. “Going back to London has a lot of symbolism for this country since we participated in our first Olympics there in 1948... There’s a lot to look forward to and we’re very excited by it all.” Most of the team members will participate in a pre-Games training camp in Cardiff, Wales from July 12-14. Those who have opted out in order to train at their regular venues include Bovell (Spain), Lewis (England), Phillip (Colorado, USA) and Daniel (Mongolia). The team will move into the Olympic Village on July 24, where it will make the decision as to who will carry the flag during the opening ceremony on July 27. Does she have the Olympic A or B standard this season in any of her swimming events?

If she doesn't then that would explain it.

T&T must now target at least 5 finals, and be realistic.

Our very best chances to date are in the relays

She doesn't. The closest were the two 16 year old boys Carter and Romany. Bovell is swimming both their events though and so a B time would not have been enough anyway.

Jamol James is a 100m sprinter who came 6th in Men's 100m Finals at the T&T National Trials last weekend and thus made it into our  Olympic 4x100m Relay Team. See him in the video here running in lane 8.

Darrel Brown's is a really sad situation!  I feel very sorry for a guy who had so much promise and never made it and wonder what the problem really was.  Was it physical (injury)?  Was it mental (psychological)?  Was it poor coaching?  And it seems like he continues to try and try, which only makes it appear worse.  He should give it up and look to restart his life doing something else.

Bledman, Baptiste in 30-member Olympic squad
Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:57

TRACK AND FIELD stars Keston Bledman and Kelly-Ann Baptiste, the national 100-metre sprint champions, are among a 30-member national squad, in six disciplines, ratified by the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC).

The announcement took place last evening during a media conference at the Olympic House, Abercromby Street, Port of Spain. The Olympic Games are carded to take place in London, England from July 27 to August 12.

Swimmer George Bovell III, the men 200m individual medley bronze medallist at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, has also been chosen, as well as 2008 Beijing Olympics 100m silver medallist Richard Thompson.

Bledman and Thompson were part of the 2008 men 4x100m relay silver medal squad, as well as Marc Burns and Emmanuel Callender — both Burns and Callender will be in action in London.

Other notable inclusions were national 200m champ Rondel Sorrillo, top 400m hurdler Jehue Gordon, CARIFTA Games javelin gold medallist Keshorn Walcott, veteran shot putter Cleopatra Borel-Brown, American-born boxer Carlos Suarez, sailor Andrew Lewis, cyclist Njisane Phillip and rifle shooter Roger Daniel.

TTOC president Larry Romany noted, “prior to going into the (Olympic) Village, there will be a pre-Games camp held in Cardiff, Wales, from July 12. Most of the athletes will attend this camp with the exception of (a few) who will be in other training camps.”

The athletes who may miss the camp are Bovell (based in Spain), Lewis (in southern England), Phillip (in Colorado, United States) and Daniel (in Mongolia). But the entire contingent is expected to relocate to the Olympic Village by July 24.

Romany admitted, “we had really projected eight sporting disciplines with two teams, and we had expected a team size of about 80 people. Unfortunately we did not realise the team sports (football and hockey) and we’ll definitely try harder for the 2016 Games (in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

“However, the team that has finally emerged is an extremely strong team,” Romany noted. “Our expectations are high in terms of what the medals potential would be, specifically in the (sprint) relays.”

And he boasted, “we are hoping that we can break the record from the 1964 (Olympics in Tokyo, Japan) with three medals. We feel that five medals are very realistic.” Romany stated that the TTOC general council ratified all the names submitted by its executive, and he went on to state, “we will rarely get involved in an organisation selection system.

“We presented the names to the general council and it was approved unanimously.”

TTOC secretary general Brian Lewis pointed out that this Games will be symbolic for the organisation, since TT’s inaugural Olympic participation took place in 1948 in London. And he also clarified the selections of women 400m hurdlers Josanne Lucas and Janeil Bellille, who both have ‘B’ standard times. He disclosed that the duo have a deadline of July 8 to each achieve an “A” standard time. If both athletes do not reach that stipulation, then the hurdler with the fastest “B” standard time will be chosen for London.

Title: Clyde Forde of General Council threatens injunction to stop T&T Olympic team

Forde threatens injunction to stop TT Olympic team
Monday, July 2 2012

FORMER Secretary of the National Association of Athletic Administration (NAAAs), Clyde Forde, has said he will file an injunction to stop the country’s Track and Field team from going to the Olympics if the general council is not given the minutes concerning the selection of the Olympic team.

Yesterday Forde quoted from Article 21 of the Track and Field constitution which states that all minutes of executives must be submitted to the general council of that council.

He said he watched the television a few days ago and was amazed to hear the team for the Olympic Games announced, although the general council had not gotten the opportunity to see the minutes of the meeting to select it.

He made it clear that the constitution dictates that the NAAAs is supposed to submit all minutes to the general council for approval. “But to date we have not seen the minutes and we don’t know what is happening,” Forde said.

Forde, who is being supported by other members of the general council, is saying that the general council has been overlooked for years and feels that it should put its foot down this time.

Quizzed as to whether there was anything that they were dissatisfied about Forde said yes.

The general council which comprises executive members of each club, Forde said, is not happy with some of the administrators chosen to go to London, England for the Olympics.

He said also that they were unsure of the times that were produced by some of the athletes. The 31 member team to represent TT at the Olympics was announced on Friday last and comprised Kelly Ann Baptiste and Keston Bledman who are expected to lead the team at the games.

The team also comprised a number of administrators who, according to Forde, were questionable.

Though Forde did not say who were the administrators they were concerned about, Newsday understands that the general council wants replacements for Dr Ian Hypolite who is the headcoach; Dexter Voisin (Manager) and Gunness Persad who is the coach for the sprint hurdles.

Forde explained that there were ex Olympians such as Neil De Silva, Ian Morris, Charlie Joseph and Alvin Daniel who were available to make vital contributions to the TT team and assist the athletes in bringing home more medals, but were not being given the opportunity.

“There is a cabal within the NAAAs executives that are sharing the trips among themselves. It appears difficult to make a dent in that group of people but the general council, which has the power to approve all decisions by the executives, is against this,” Forde said.

Meanwhile, Alan Baboolal, secretary of the NAAAs said the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) ratified the team on Friday. He explained that after the National Open Championships on June 23 and 24 they had briefed the TTOC on what the team was going to look like.

Baboolal dismissed talks that the NAAAs was to submit minutes to the general council, saying he does not know what Forde was talking about. Attempts were also made to contact president of the NAAAs Ephraim Serrette but that proved futile.

However, Baboolal said his association will have an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday.

Ahye intends to make T&T proud at London Olympics
Published: Monday, July 9, 2012

Sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye intends to make the most of her sponsorship by energy company BP Trinidad and Tobago when she competes at the 2012 London Olympic Games from July 27 to August 12. “When I got the call saying bpTT was going to sponsor me for the Olympics, I was shocked. I couldn’t believe someone wanted to sponsor me. This was all new to me as I never had a sponsor before. Of course, I feel very happy because this arrangement has helped me tremendously with my preparation for the biggest moment of my life,” said Ahye, who is a member of the Trinidad and Tobago’s Women 4 x 100-metre relay team.

A bpTT athlete ambassador, Ahye was speaking at the Bristow (Caribbean) facility at the old Piarco terminal on Wednesday where she interacted with the company’s offshore crews. Ahye also distributed special Olympic tokens.

“I intend to put my best foot forward to make all of Trinidad and Tobago proud, including my sponsors bpTT, for their tremendous support. Right now, my management team is working with me to put everything in place for the games,” said an enthusiastic Ahye. For Corey McKenna, a production operator with bpTT, the opportunity to meet an Olympic-bound athlete was an inspiring moment. “I felt a real sense of pride when I heard that my company was helping our athletes prepare for the Olympic Games. I am thrilled to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“Our athletes need all the help they can get for the greatest challenge of their sporting careers. We wish Michelle-Lee and all the other athletes the best,” said an emotional McKenna. The 31-member athletic team for the London Olympics are all being described as “Conquerors”, based on Kees Diefenthaller’s anthem “We are Conquerors”, which was specially commissioned by bpTT in honour of the country’s Olympic effort and the 50th independence anniversary.

BP Trinidad and Tobago is a sponsor of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee and the Trinidad and Tobago Paralympic Committee. Its parent company, BP Plc, is the official oil and gas partner of both the London Olympic Games and London Paralympic Games.

Trinidad and Tobago athletes Cleopatra Borel and Ayanna Alexander continued preparations for the London Games with solid performances at the Jamaica Olympic trials, in Kingston, on the weekend.

On Saturday, Borel won the women's shot put with an 18.28 metres throw. Zara Northover was a distant second, the Jamaican landing the iron ball 16.42m.

In Sunday's women's triple jump, Alexander produced a 13.75m effort to finish third. Kimberly Williams jumped an impressive 14.52m for a big win, beating her fellow-Jamaican, 2005 world champion Trecia Smith (13.94m), into second spot.

T&T's Emanuel Mayers was the fastest athlete in the opening round of the men's 400 metres hurdles. Mayers clocked 50.00 seconds to top heat three. However, with foreigners only eligible to compete in one round in track events at the Jamaica trials, Mayers did not have another opportunity to achieve the 49.50 seconds Olympic "A" standard he had targetted.

In the women's 400m hurdles, T&T's Josanne Lucas fell short of the 55.50 seconds Olympic "A" standard, the 2009 World Championship bronze medallist finishing third in heat two in 56.63.

Emmanuel Callender will travel to London as part of T&T's men's 4x100m relay squad. He wants to compete in the Olympic Games 200m event as well, but was unable to attain the 20.55 seconds "A" standard in Jamaica.

Callender copped fourth spot in heat three in 20.89 seconds. And in the 100m qualifiers, he battled against a strong 4.7 metres per second headwind to win the fifth and final heat in 10.59.

Aleesha Barber also chased an "A" standard on the weekend. Competing in the women's 100m hurdles, the T&T athlete finished sixth in heat two in 13.52 seconds—well short of the Olympic qualifying time of 12.96.

T&T OLYMPIC ATHLETE PROFILE 2012
Keston “Blazing” Bledman - Athletics (100m, 4x100m)

Keston “Blazing” Bledman is among the contenders for precious metal in the blue ribbon event at the London Games - the men’s 100 metres dash.

Ahead of the 2012 season, Bledman had just one legal sub-10 clocking to his name – the 9.93 seconds run he had produced in Florida, USA in June last year. In less than a month this year, between May 26 and June 23, the Claxton Bay sprinter dived under 10 seconds three more times to take his overall tally to four.

Bledman’s first sub-10 run for 2012 came at the Golden South Classic in Florida, the 24-year-old athlete winning his heat in 9.89 seconds. He opted to skip the final.

And at the National Championships, “Blazing” Bledman scorched the Hasely Crawford Stadium track in 9.86 seconds for a commanding victory. The clocking moved him into joint-second spot, with Ato Boldon, on the all-time Trinidad and Tobago performance list.

Richard “Torpedo” Thompson joined an elite club when he bagged two medals at the 2008 Olympic Games, in Beijing, China.
Thompson became only the fifth Trinidad and Tobago athlete to earn more than one Olympic medal. The Cascade sprinter seized silver in the men’s 100 metres dash in 9.89 seconds, getting to the line behind Jamaica’s Usain Bolt (9.69) and ahead of American Walter Dix (9.91). And in the 4x100 metres relay, Thompson anchored T&T to silver to join Ato Boldon, Rodney Wilkes, Wendell Mottley and Edwin Roberts in the country’s “Multiple Olympic Medalists” club.

The “Torpedo” has had his challenges this season, battling to overcome injury. But his 10.09 seconds 100 metres run on June 9 at the adidas Grand Prix Samsung Diamond League meet in New York, USA, was a clear indicator that he is winning the race to be 100 percent ready for his Olympic appointment. He confirmed this at the National Championships with a 9.96 dash, the impressive clocking earning him silver.

Marc Burns is the Mr Consistent of Trinidad and Tobago sprinting.
As a teenager, Burns earned men’s 100 metres bronze at the 2000 World Junior Championships in Chile. And two years later, at the World Juniors meet in Jamaica, he claimed silver in the same event.

Competing in the senior ranks, Burns reached the 100 metres final at three successive World Championship meets, finishing seventh in Helsinki, Finland in 2005, eighth in Osaka, Japan in 2007, and seventh in Berlin, Germany in 2009.

The Alabama-based sprinter also faced the starter in the 100 metres championship race, at the 2008 Olympic Games, in Beijing, China. He copped seventh spot.
This season, Burns clocked 10.08 seconds on April 21 at a meet in his adopted hometown of Auburn, Alabama. It was his fastest run since 2009.

T&T OLYMPIC ATHLETE PROFILE 2012
Rondel Sorrillo - Athletics (100m, 200m, 4x100m)

Rondel Sorrillo has a unique place in Olympic history. He is the only athlete with a victory over Jamaica’s Usain Bolt at the 2008 Games, in Beijing, China. In round one of the men’s 200 metres, the T&T sprinter got to the line ahead of a trotting Bolt, the man who went on to complete the men’s sprint double, winning both events in world record time.
Sorrillo, who has a dream of beating Bolt when the double Olympic champion is “giving everything he’s got”, enjoyed a breakout season in 2011. He clocked a personal best 20.16 seconds to capture the national 200 metres title.

And then, at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, the La Brea sprinter finished seventh in the half-lap final.
But those who considered Sorrillo a 200 metres specialist got a rude awakening at the 2012 National Championships, in Port of Spain. Ahead of the meet, Sorrillo’s personal best in the century was 10.17 seconds. He improved to 10.11 in the semi-final round. And in the final, the US-based athlete took another big chunk off his PR (personal record), getting to the line in 10.03 seconds to bag bronze.

Callender again answered the call to national duty in late October, last year, leading the T&T sprint charge at the Pan American Games, in Guadalajara, Mexico. This time, he climbed the podium, bagging bronze in the 100 metres in 10.16 seconds.
Callender is also a two-time Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Track and Field Championship individual gold medallist. He captured the 200 metres title in 2008, and the 100 metres crown in 2009.

T&T OLYMPIC ATHLETE PROFILE 2012
Janeil Bellille - Athletics (400m hurdles)

Janeil Bellille has tasted global success. Back in 2008, she secured silver in the women’s 400 metres hurdles at the World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Her clocking in that final, 56.84 seconds, is still the national junior record.

Bellille’s best time in the one-lap hurdles is 55.80 seconds. She produced that run in 2011, and followed up this season with a 55.91 clocking at the Texas Relays.
At the 2012 National Junior College Championships, in Texas, USA, Bellille struck gold for South Plains College in 56 seconds flat.

And then, at the National Championships, in Port of Spain, the 23-year-old athlete had the satisfaction of beating 2009 World Championship bronze medallist Josanne Lucas.

Ayanna Alexander has realised her dream of qualifying for the Olympic Games. The triple jumper grabbed gold at the 2011 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Track and Field Championships, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

Ayanna has come back stronger than ever in 2012. She broke the 14-metre barrier for the first time in her career on May 12, at the Virginia Challenge.
There were three more 14-metre meets for Alexander, including the Quantum Invitational, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, where she disturbed the sand at 14.15 metres – the current national record.

T&T OLYMPIC ATHLETE PROFILE 2012
Cleopatra Borel - Athletics (shot put)

Cleopatra Borel is an Olympic veteran. She made her debut on the biggest global sporting stage in 2004, in Ancient Olympia, Greece, finishing tenth in the women’s shot put with an 18.35 metres throw.

Competing at the same place where the Ancient Olympics were first held, back in 776 B.C., Borel wrote her name into the history books in the qualifying competition.
Women were not allowed to take part in the Ancient Olympics, so by throwing 18.90 metres in the first round of qualifying Borel became the first athlete to qualify for the final in the very first event for women in Ancient Olympia.

T&T OLYMPIC ATHLETE PROFILE 2012
Carlos Suarez - Boxing (light flyweight 46-49kg)

Carlos Suarez is Trinidad and Tobago’s lone representative in the boxing tournament at the 2012 London Olympics.
Nineteen-year-old Suarez is among 26 boxers listed for action in the light flyweight division. The field also includes Jantony Ortiz, the Puerto Rican who whipped Suarez 23-4 in the semifinal round at the Olympic Qualifiers Of The Americas, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in May.
It may not have seemed so at the time, but Suarez was fortunate to have fought Ortiz in the semis. Ortiz’s victory in the final meant that Suarez finished third, and was handed the final Olympic qualifying light flyweight spot up for grabs at the tournament, the American-born T&T boxer benefitting from the luck of the draw.

Njisane Phillip - Cycling (sprint, keirin)

Njisane Phillip is just 21, and will gain valuable experience on his Olympic debut in London, England.

But while the Trinidad and Tobago cyclist seems on course to challenge for a sprint medal at the 2016 Olympic Games, in Brazil, he is already good enough to force himself into the headlines at London 2012.
In October, last year, Phillip broke the Pan American Games record in the Flying 200 metres with a sizzling 9.977 seconds ride, in Mexico. He went on to bag bronze in the men’s sprint.

In March, Phillip turned bronze into gold, winning the sprint title at the 2012 Pan American Track Cycling Championships, in Argentina.

And in Colorado, USA, in June, the young cycling star established a new national and Pan American record in the Flying 200, scorching the track in 9.775 seconds.

T&T OLYMPIC ATHLETE PROFILE 2012
Andrew Lewis - Sailing (laser)

Andrew Lewis will become the first Trinidad and Tobago sailor in 48 years to compete at the Olympics.
Last December, in Perth, Australia, Lewis fell short in his bid to qualify for the London Games. That left the 22-year-old with just one more opportunity.

With the remaining 12 Olympic spots up for grabs at the May 4-10 Audi Laser World Championships, in Boltenhagen, Germany, Lewis had to perform. He did, and the rest is history.

For the first time since Rawle Barrow and his brother, Cordell teamed up for 19th spot in the Flying Dutchman class at the 1964 Games, in Tokyo, Japan, T&T will be represented in an Olympic sailing competition.

The soldier made his Olympic debut at the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece, tying for 27th in the 10 metres air pistol and finishing 33rd in the 50 metres pistol. And at the 2008 Beijing Games, he was 36th in the 10 metres air pistol.

Daniel has been a consistent performer for T&T, earning precious metal at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, the Pan American Games and the Commonwealth Games. Missing from his collection is an Olympic medal. The 42-year-old shooter aims to set that right in London

T&T OLYMPIC ATHLETE PROFILE 2012
George Bovell - Swimming (50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke)

George Bovell knows what it’s like to be part of an Olympic medal ceremony.

At the 2004 Games, in Athens, Greece, the Trinidad and Tobago swimmer earned bronze in the men’s 200 metres individual medley in one minute, 58.80 seconds.

Four years later, in Beijing, China, Bovell competed in the 50 metres freestyle, as well as the 100 free. In the longer race, he finished 20th overall in the opening round in 48.83 seconds, and did not advance to the semis. In the 50, though, Bovell progressed to the semis sixth fastest with a 21.77 seconds scorcher. A 21.86 seconds swim in his semifinal heat earned him 11th spot overall.

Bovell is hoping to return to the podium at the London Games. He will compete in the 100 backstroke and 100 free, but it is in the 50 free that he expects to make an impact.

T&T at the Olympics
Bovell splashes off Sunday
Published: Friday, July 27, 2012

George Bovell III is the most successful swimmer to come out of T&T. Some highlights of his illustrious career include winning bronze in the men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM), capturing five Pan American Medals (2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze), and five individual NCAA titles. Bovell is currently the fourth fastest man in history of the 50m freestyle. Coming from a family with a history of involvement in sport, it was only natural that Bovell followed suit. His mother, Barbara, was an Olympic runner and a Canadian champion. His father was a successful Collegiate swimmer and T&T Sportsman of the Year. Hiss brother, Nicholas, is also an Olympic swimmer.

From the age of seven, he started competitive swimming. Nine years later, he stepped onto the international stage, competing at the US Open and Pan American Games. In 2000 Bovell enrolled at Auburn University, where he won five individual NCAA titles, eight SEC titles, 25 All American Honours (the most in Auburn history) and was part of the first class in the history of NCAA sports to finish their eligibility undefeated. In the fall of 2004, he suffered a  knee injury that would prevent him from swimming breastroke and competing in the individual medley. This forced him to focus on his second best events—the 100 and 200 freestyles.

In 2006, he trained under Mike Bottom at Cal Berkeley where he learned proper sprinting technique. He followed Bottom to the Raceclub in the Florida Keys in 2007 to train for the 2008 Olympics. In Beijing, he broke the Olympic record in the heats, but was not able to secure a spot in the finals, finishing 11th in the 50 freestyle.  In 2009, Bovell broke the World Championships record and became the fourth fastest man in history in the 50m freestyle. He reunited with the coach who took him to his bronze medal in Athens, Sport Minister Anil Roberts in 2010 and had stellar performances at the World Championships in Dubai, finishing fourth in the 100m IM and 10th in 50m free.  In 2011, Bovell placed seventh in the finals of the World Swimming Championships, proving that he is a medal contender for 2012.

Rigorous plan pays off for Lewis
Story Created: Jul 27, 2012 at 11:58 PM ECT

Trinidad and Tobago's Andrew Lewis is one of only five sailors from the Perth 2011 ISAF (International Sailing Association and Federation) Sailing World Championships Training Programme to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.

The London Olympic Games kick off this weekend with the four countries of Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, Chinese Taipei and Guatemala, all of whom did not compete in sailing at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, being represented in the sport.

T&T will be represented by 22-year-old Lewis, whose selection follows his strong performances in recent international regattas, including the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

Lewis will now compete in the Laser class alongside the world's best at the London Olympics.

The Emerging Nations Programme was a sailing initiative hatched in July 2007 and was integral to Perth's winning bid to host the ISAF Sailing World Championships, which took place in December 2011.

The initiative was geared to develop the sport of sailing internationally by giving direct support to nations who are keen to nurture sailing talent but lack the necessary funding, world class coaching and equipment to do so.

An initial group of 32 athletes from 23 nations was selected to follow the Emerging Nations Programme's rigorous two-year training plan.

A series of official camps, where qualified Olympic coaches mixed on-the-water training with fitness work and lectures on sports psychology, nutrition, weather and tactics, culminated in the best 12 sailors being selected to compete in the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

After impressive performances in Perth across three classes--Laser, Laser radial and RS:X wind surfers-- five of the group will now test their abilities and represent their countries at the Olympics.

Following the success of the Emerging Nations Programme, Santander, host of the 2014 ISAF World Sailing Championships, has decided to continue the scheme.

Lewis gets his first taste of official Olympic action on Monday morning at the sailing venue off Weymouth on the south coast of England.
