U-17 Soca Princesses to use Wolf as CFU prep.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

In an effort to help expedite the preparations of this country’s Under-17 Soca Princesses for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, the national lasses will compete in this year’s edition of the Women’s League Football (Wolf). The season kicks off on Saturday at Constantine Park, Macoya, with a family day.

The CFU first round group of qualifiers are set for US Virgin Islands from August 19 to 26 and will involve four teams in the group with the final round of qualifiers slated for September 18 to 25 at a venue to be determined towards qualification for the 2014 Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup, the fourth edition in Costa Rica from March 14 to April 15, next year.

This was disclosed by Wolf press officer and manager of the national U-17 women’s team Jinelle James at the launch of this year’s league which was held at the T&T Football Federation head office, Ana Street, Woodbrook, yesterday.

James, a former national player herself, explained: “Since the national U-17 women’s team went to Fort Lauderdale at the end of August last year with coach Marlon Charles they have stopped training and to help expedite their development and preparations for the preliminary round of qualifiers a decision was taken by Wolf to have them participate in the league and also in the Premier Division, where the level of play will be much better for them.”

"James, a former national player herself, explained: “Since the national U-17 women’s team went to Fort Lauderdale at the end of August last year with coach Marlon Charles they have stopped training"

Was going to respond to this with a big "Huh????"

But really this is par for the course...hopefully their participation in the women's league will get them the much-needed prep for this tournament

He will take occasional sessions, but team coach is Akheela Mollon, who is also one of our youth team coaches. She is one for the future!

Something Brent and I wanted to do for a few years. It's also a very cute marketing move.
Akheela Mullon has been coaching with our youth teams since January and we want to encourage female coaches into the men's football scene. We have female physios, referees and match commissioners, so why not female coaches if they're good enough? Akheela gets respect because she is still a very talented footballer.

Central FC to field team in women’s league.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Lady Sharks in with WoLF.

Central FC will be entering a team into the Japs-sponsored WoLF (Women’s League Football) First Division. The newly formed team will compete against Tobago All Stars, Tunapuna Titans, UWI and Malabar All Stars.

“This is something that was on our business plan from day one,” said Central FC managing director, Brent Sancho. “We stated that we wanted to give opportunities to the young people of Central, and to fulfil our promise, we must include females.”

Sancho said that initially there would not be many players from the central region. “As with the men’s team, we had open trials, but the attendance from local players was very low.

However, through the season we have uncovered some remarkably talented players who hail from the central region and this means next season, our team will be more representative of the region. We expect to follow the same pattern with the ladies. We are already seeing a new crop of talented girls at the Central FC Football Factory coaching school and this will be the route to the women’s team.”

The “Lady Sharks” will be fielding some exciting talent. “We are proud to have recruited some of T&T’s brightest talent,” said team manager Adrian Romain. “Players like 18-year-olds Victoria Swift, Samantha Kissoon and T&T Under-17 captain Anique Walker will be immense role models for the Central female community, and we hope they will encourage more girls to take an interest in football.”

Head coach of the Lady Sharks is former T&T international Ahkeela Mollon, the first female footballer from T&T to earn an overseas football contract, which saw her playing in Sweden and Finland.

“Ahkeela is a valuable member of the Central FC staff,” said Sancho. “At this club, we don’t believe in pigeonholing people. We practise a philosophy that says that if you’re good enough to do a job, then you should do it. Ahkeela was brought on board to coach our boys youth teams.

As she develops her skills, I’d love to see her coaching our reserve team, and then, who knows? We have female physios, match officials and match commissioners in the Pro League, so why not a female coach?” Sancho went on to say “We did not hire Ahkeela to coach the ladies team, however, she obviously has a keen interest in promoting womens football and when she requested the coaching position, of course, we were delighted.”

Operations director Kevin Harrison said: “As you would expect, the Lady Sharks will also be active in our community projects. We see this as an exciting opportunity to inspire young women throughout the central region. Ahkeela is a great role model for young people.”

Harrison said “Places like England still have glass ceilings inside football and you see very few black players making it through into management. In the Pro League, the doors are open to coaches from home and abroad and there is no barrier due to race, creed or colour. The only glass ceiling left to smash in T&T is the belief that women can’t coach men.”

Harrison said Central FC will be embarking on the second stage of their SIS Central Community Challenge on Sunday, when they play Cap Off Youths FC at Jerry Junction Recreational Ground, Carapichaima.

“These games are great for us, because there are no Pro League games until May 3. We beat a full-strength Antigua Barracuda side 6-1 on Wednesday, with Rundell Winchester scoring a hat-trick, and we’re using these community games to give players like Rundell, who has just come back from injury, the chance to regain match fitness.”

The Community Challenge will give the people of Carapichaima and Waterloo the chance to see national players such as Darren Mitchell, Jason Marcano and Marvin Phillip as well as 2006 Soca Warrior, Anthony Wolfe. Meanwhile, Cap Off Youths, coached by Michael Davis, will be fielding local heroes such as Emilio Smith, Wendell Archibald, Neon O’Garro, Kareem Garcia, Jaffet Williams, Garvin Samaroo.

“We field a full strength squad, though, of course, we will rotate some players to give everyone a game,” said Harrison. “We will have a few giveaways and The Sharkettes will be on hand to add some glamour, along with a music truck. Thanks go to Mr Stephen Bartholomew and the Waterloo Institute of Soccer Players for helping to bring professional football into the heart of the community.”

Kick-off at Carapichaima is at 4 pm tomorrow and admission is free.

For women to coach men to fully take root, women have to be involved in the coaching of boys in their formative years.

Exactly, which is why Ahkeela is coaching our youth teams. But some of the U17's play in the reserves and also with our senior team, but they still respect Ahkeela. Our hope is to bring some of the other girls in the team into coaching at our coaching schools.

Malick stun Real.
WoLF Release.

Malick City stomped on 2012 League Winners, Real Dimension WFC in their first face off in the 2013 TT WoLF season last Friday.

Malick City were ready from the blow of the whistle and  took charge in the 2nd minute of the game when Akeela Oliver got past the defender and took a curling shot to the first post that was out of the reach of Real Dimension custodian, Keri Myers. Real Dimension would try to turn it up with individual skill and  passes but shots would either go way over bars or wide of the post.

In the second half, Malick City seemed more determined to go after their opponents and would be rewarded when Myers would mistakenly pass the ball to the oncoming Akeela Oliver who made no mistake and got herself on the scoresheet once again  to put Malick 2 goals up.

Real Dimension did not give up but had several failed attempts until Alania Burgin took a shot that was too much for Shalette Alexander to handle and parried back out to an onrushing Shanelle Henry  who played a low shot past Alexander to make the score 2-1.

Malick would seal their victory when Real D custodian would commit a foul and seemingly take out her nemesis for the night, Akeela Oliver, in the penalty area. Captain Anastasia Prescott would convert and although Real Dimension pressed and they had many chances, nothing would fall in their favor.

In other matches played last weekend, the National U-17 Team drew with Step by Step F.A. 2 goals each with Denise Tucker and Kamara Charles scoring in the 15' and 45+' for Step by Step while Zoe Swift netted both goals for the U-17s in the 21' and 83'.

Trincity Nationals defeated Defence Force 2 goals to nil and the Warrick sisters scored both goals.

St. Ann's Rangers drew 1-1 with St. Augustine F.C. Patrice Superville gave St. Augustine the lead in the 26' for St. Augustine while Maya Matouk equalised for Rangers in the 42'.

Malick City Trincity, stay perfect in Wolf.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Jonelle Warrick of Trincity Nationals and Emarie Holland of Malick City had stellar performances for their respective teams to secure their second win from as many matches when the T&T Women’s League Football (WoLF) Premier Division continued on the weekend.

On Saturday at the Eddie Hart Ground, Tunapuna, Warrick, who also netted in her team’s 2-0 shutout of Defence Force to kick off the season, hammered in a beaver-trick for Trinity Nationals in a 5-1 pounding of St Ann’s Rangers.

Warrick got her goals in the 11th, 30th, 36th and 59th minutes while Charissa Delzin added the other in the 71st for a 5-0 lead before Chelsea-Marie Spencer got a 90th-minute consolation strike for Rangers, which drew 1-1 with St Augustine in their opener.

Malick, which spanked defending champions Real Dimension 3-1 in its opener, blanked Tobago WFC 2-0 with Holland scoring a second-half brace in the 63rd and 72nd minute for her team at Pascal Ground, Maraval, to trail Trincity on goal difference at the top of the nine-club standings, both with six points.

Step By Step is two points behind in third spot after a 2-1 win over Defence Force in the first match of a double-header at Dibe Ground, Long Circular, while two hours later at the same venue, Real Dimension finally jump-started its bid to repeat as champions with a 5-0 trouncing of the T&T  Under-17 women’s team who are using the tournament as part of their preparations for the Caribbean Football Under-17 Championships.

For Real Dimension, former national forward Alania Burgin and current T&T midfielder Dernelle Mascall scored two apiece and Natasha St Louis, also a national player, the other. However, the biggest winners on the weekend were Diego Martin Central which blasted Tunapuna Titans 11-0, led by a beaver-trick from Allizza Mc Cutcheon and a treble from Breanna George.

Diego Martin, which also got a goal each from Malak Marcelle, Akilah Crawford, Micheala Samaroo and Rosario Lewis at Constantine Park, Macoya, on Sunday, leads the six-team Group B table with six points from two matches, three ahead of Malabar All Stars, 6-0 victors against Barataria Ball Players, and Central FC. In the First Division Group B matches played, La Brea Angels made it two wins on the trot after a 4-0 shutout of Mos Schoolaz while Petrotrin edged Civic Centre Pioneers 3-2.

Is the league a pro/semi pro or amateur league? Are high school players involved in the league because the forseable issue would be the loss of eligibility if they intend to go on and play for schools in the US. Currently the NCAA and NAIA clearinghouses have no definitive way determining the staus of leagues outside the US.

St. Augustine stops Trinicity.
WoLF Release.

In an intense face off last Saturday between Trincity Nationals and St. Augustine F.C., many would have thought that Trincity would walk away with 3 points. St. Augustine had other plans though and from the blow of the whistle anyone could see that St. Augustine was hungry and determined to win.

They would be rewarded in the 39th minute when there was some confusion between defender and Linfah Jones, WWC U-17 Goalkeeper, wich resulted in the ball bouncing onto the feet of Denisha O'Brien who had an empty goal waiting.

The game's intensity heightened and became very physical and aggressive. The Warrick sisters were not able to make any dent on the game although they had some opportunities to score. National Youth Mid-fielder, Patrice Campbell, played a major role in St. Augustine's success as she dribbled pass her Trincity opponents with confidnece and skill.

She also had a hand in St. Augustine's second goal as a ball was driven across the goal  and had Jones stretching with only her tips to deflect into the path of Denesha O'Brien, who would again score her second goal in the 54'. Jonelle Warrick would have her chance to get Trincity on the board when she was released to leave her one on one with the keeper.

She would place the shot under the onrushing goalkeeper, Nicole Mitchelle-Thomas, but the post would save St. Augustine and keep Trincity goalless. The final goal would come in the 74' when goalkeeper Jones came out to clear a bouncing ball while St. Augustine striker, Celeste Thomas was also rushing to get the ball; Thomas would get there first and sealed the victory for St. Augustine.

In other Premier Division Matches, Real Dimension defeated Defence Force by 2 goals to nil while Step by Step and Rangers would draw 1 goal each. The National U-17s travelled to Tobago and earned their first victory with a 2-1 victory over the Tobago Women's Team.

DMC have many promising players, but they are all quite young and joined this league to learn and develop. I believe DMC won 11-0 the week before!

So far the class of this (Frist Division A) seems to be Central and Tobago. Everyone else has a lot of 'learning' to do. DMC lost 13-0 to Tobago last week. smh

As far as I can calculate, Central F.C.'s Lady Sharks have now played 5 games, won 5, scored 50 and conceded 1.

They're currently working on their shaky defence!!!

I don't believed that's allowed. However, one of the Lady Sharks is coach of our under 17's and several of her players will be signing contracts for our first team. One may be attending an academy in the UK. Several will be trialing with a British club in the next four weeks.

As for the girls, it's too soon to say how good they are as individuals. We'll need to see them in the Premier League before we contact  women's teams in Europe and USA. However, there are one or two who stand out now, and one has been offered a contract in Brazil.

And none Central developed, Mollon was already a star when you signed her, dont make it sound like your club is responsible for any of them, this is only their 5 game with your club.

Trini players are known for trials without success.

Dont fool yourself.

I remember you said once that Central was signing with some big club to partner them too.

Yeah, Jack, it's kinda difficult to develop a player correctly in 10 months. And if you had any kind of comprehension, you would recognise that I was talking about U17 boys, not girls. They've had a full Reserve and youth league season, and I do believe we have developed them further and added to their potential.

Trin players are know for trials with success. I don't understand this sentence, so I can't comment.

Alexander, Alonzo put Malick ahead of pack in WoLF.
T&T Guardian Reports.

A hat-trick from Rhonique Alexander and a double from Ashley Alonzo saw Malick City ease its way to a 5-0 win and a spot at the top of the standings, at the expense of a struggling Step by Step FC, when action continued in the Women’s League Football (WoLF) Premier Division competition, on Wednesday.

Having played one match more than defending champion Real Dimension, Malick City will be grateful for the big-win but cautious of the possibility of losing its lead once again when the top two teams play in a crucial match-up tomorrow, at Maracas Recreation Ground, St Joseph.

Malick’s 5-0 win over second-from-bottom Step by Step followed St Augustine’s first draw of the campaign in a 1-1 tie with Defence Force, in the opening match of a double header at UWI Gorund, St Augustine. Step by Step will return to action today when it faces the resurging National Women’s U-17 team at UWI Ground, St Augustine, from 6 pm.

Premier Division matches will continued into Sunday, which will also see the final round of matches in the First Division, Group A.

Central FC and Tobago have already been confirmed as the top two sides in Group A, but will be in action to complete the fixtures. Civic Centre Pioneers and Pretrotrin have also taken first and second place, respectively, in Group B, and with the top two teams in Group A, will advance to the Big-Four competition, where the two finalists will earn promotion to the Premier Division. The bottom two teams at the end of the Premier Division, will be relegated to the First Division. The Big-Four is expected to start on Wednesday and be completed next Friday, at venues to be confirmed.

U-17s withdraw as WoLF continues.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Following a lengthy break to facilitate the senior women’s national team training programme, the Women’s League Football (WoLF) Premier Division competition will continue today with three matches, comprising teams which are not affected by the national team’s tour of England.

A major change has been made to the fixtures, with the withdrawal of the Women’s National Under-17 team which has to shift its focus on the upcoming CFU Under-17 qualifying competition.

The team, since starting its first ever Wolf campaign, saw a mix of results, which started with a string of losses, before gaining momentum to record consecutive wins. The Under-17 team lost its first two matches of the second round, and will see the remaining fixtures defaults.

Current league runner-up Trincity Nationals, which sits a point behind leader Real Dimension, will travel to the Dibe Recreation Ground, Long Circular Road, St James, where the club will face Step by Step from 4.15 pm.

A win will see Nationals take the top spot, but it leaves Real Dimension with two matches in hand. The First Division Big-Four competition, which is a qualifying competition for the Premier Division has been postponed.

Schedule

Today

Step by Step vs Trincity Nationals, Dibe Recreation Ground, Long Circular, 4.15 pm
Defence Force vs St Ann’s Rangers, Hasely Crawford Stadium training ground, 4 pm

Tomorrow
St Augustine FC vs Tobago, St Augustine Secondary, 4.15 pm

Central F.C.'s Lady Sharks beat Petrotrin 4-1 to win promotion to the Premier League in their first season.

I am not sure of the exact timing of the goals, but I believe Central took the lead after approx 10 mins and added a second within a couple of minutes. The Lady Sharks killed the game after something like 25 mins with their third goal. The second half was much more pedestrian and Petrotrin finally got onto the scoresheet around 30 mins into the 2nd half. Sharks immediately regained a three goal lead.

There was around 150 people at Ato Boldon to see the game, but the Lady Sharks supporters came with a tassa section, horns, flags and coolers and made lots of noise throughout the game.

In the first match, Point Fortin beat Tobago (I think that score may also have been 4-1)

Point Fortin will play Central F.C. Ladies in the final on Sunday somewhere near Edinburgh 500.

TT Women’s Football League scheduled for May 24 kick-off.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

The Organizing Committee, led by T&TT women’s football president Sharon O’Brien is moving ahead with plans to stage another season of the TT Women’s Football League (WoLF).

O’Brien is expecting the interest in the league to be greater than years gone by due to the fact that this is a World Cup qualifying year for the National Senior Women’s team along with the Caribbean Football Union’s final qualifying round slated to be held in T&T in August. Additionally, the strong showing by the Women’s National Under 20 team in the CONCACAF Finals earlier this year, it is hoped will attract more younger players to the League.

“We are expecting that the appetite for women’s football will be better this year and this is largely due to some of the promising performances we have seen by our national teams,” O’Brien said.

The League is expected to start on May 24th and the National Women’s Under 15 team will participate in the Premier Division alongside defending champions Real Dimension, Trincity Nationals, Malick City, St. Ann's Rangers, St. Augustine FC, Defence Force and new promoted team Central FC, and Civic Centre Pioneers. Caledonia AIA will be producing a team in the 1st division this year.

“From an administrative standpoint we are looking to improve things and to ensure we have a properly run league which can attract players and ensure that the current ones are able to play the game in a well staged league. The Senior Women’s has a busy season ahead of them and our youth teams also have a lot to look forward to and I am expecting all of these factors to contribute to the interest developing in local women’s football,” O’Brien added.

FIFA Women’s football consultant, Mexican Andrea Rodebough visited the TTFA offices earlier this month and held meetings with local officials, citing the need for a proper league for women’s football.

“The meetings were very useful to us and she indicated the need for us to have a strong league if we are to see the growth of women’s football in the country. We intend to give it our best shot at making this a reality.”

O’Brien can be contacted at 623 9500  by Friday 9th May, 2014 by any clubs interested in joining the League for the upcoming season.

Guardian online  June 3rd

A week following an unconvincing opening round display from Central FC’s women’s outfit, the Sharks returned to grab their first ever official win in the Women’s League Football (Wolf) competition on Saturday, with a 2-0 win over defending champion Real Dimension in Premier Division action.

The win was recorded at New Settlement Ground, with Verlea Duprey and substitute Kayla Taylor scored the two goals early into the second half, to lift Central FC up to fourth place in the seven-team Premier standings. Taylor, one of T&T’s most promising teenagers also recorded an assist on the first goal. Taylor’s goal, meanwhile, came from a clever assist from the team’s and national Under-20 captain Anique Walker.

The win for Central put it on three points with Real Dimension (equal of goal difference), which recorded its first loss after two matches. Central lost its opening match, 3-0, against current league leader St Ann’s Rangers a week prior, while Real Dimension edged St Augustine 2-1.

In Saturday’s other Premier Division match, St Augustine FC won for the first time after three matches with a 2-0 triumph over the National Under-15 girls’ team. A day later, First Division action kicked off with Ministry of Sport Schoolaz storming to the top of the table with a 11-0 thrashing of Debe All Stars. Chelcy Ralph scored four goals, while Zoe Swift and Jasandra Joseph each bagged a hat-trick. Athalia Massey scored the other goal. Petrotrin FC sealed the league second biggest win of the season by virtue of a 8-0 whipping of Diego Martin Central United. Nikeisha Noel scored five, while Afeisha Clement, Delicia Duntin and Solange Gopaul completed the rout.

Action is scheduled to continue today with a Premier Division clash between Central FC and the National Under-15 team, at Edinburgh 500 Recreation Ground, from 6.30 pm.

Central F.C. 4 -2 T&T U15's

Edinburgh 500

Huge support for U15's created a great atmosphere.  Central surged into a 3-0 lead with goals from Wilson, Duprey and Mohammed, before T&T regrouped and pulled a goal back before half time.

The U15's continued to dominate and reduced the score to 3-2 before Tampa University's Shannon Walisch banged home a header from David's corner to put the game out of reach.

Central are not yet capable of controlling the game for 90 minutes, but seem to have the knack of scoring when it matters. U15's have some very good players, but relied too much on passes over the top to bypass the defence.

All new teams/clubs are also invited to attend the meeting.

According to a media release, “in spite of the announcement from the Sports Minister (Brent Sancho) about introducing a Women’s Professional League, the WoLF feels that it still has a responsibility to cater to the larger population of girls/women, new teams, young and (promising) female players who just want to have the opportunity to play.”

Women's league kicks off May 16
By Sean Taylor (Express).

The 2015 season of Trinidad and Tobago Women's League Football (TT WoLF) will commence on the May 16 at a yet to be determined venue.

The league competition was officially announced last Saturday at the TTFA's Hasely Crawford Stadium Office. Prizes will be awarded on May 9 for last season's outstanding performers. There will be six teams making their first appearance in the first division this season.

This year's competition features 22 teams and two divisions. The premier division includes eight teams, including promoted newcomers MOS Schoolaz and Petrotrin, as well as the usual suspects Real Dimension, Central FC, St. Augustine FC, Point Fortin Civic and of course, reigning league champions St. Ann's Rangers FC. The National U-15 Girls team are the final participants in the premier division, as they use the league action as preparation for international competition. Defence Force women's team however, were relegated to the first division.

The first division will have 14 teams contesting for the top two spots, which gain them promotion to next year's top flight. Among these clubs, there are six newcomers including; Queen's Park CC, Malvern, Crown Trace, Waterloo Starlets, Tobago Chicas and George and Anita Russell Sporting Academy. St Ann's Rangers and Petrotrin will also have their "B" teams participating in the first division.

This season will feature the league as well as the FA Cup competition which will feature all the teams from the two divisions vying for the title. The WoLF administration is enthused by the inclusion of the new clubs as it signals an increased interest to participate in women's football.

Jinelle James, Media Officer for the TT WoLF, told the Express that competition in the premier division should be fairly even in comparison to recent seasons, where one-sided games were the norm. According to her, teams are more prepared, and followers of local women's football should expect a few surprises along the way.

Women’s League season opens today
T&T Express Reports.

The 2015 season of the TTWoLF (T&T Women’s League Football) will commence today at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field from 1pm with a series of activities including parade of teams and fun events where the teams will be grouped for novelty events.

This year, 20 teams will compete in one Division. Among those teams is the National Under -17 women’s team, currently coached by Rajesh Latchoo which is preparing for the upcoming FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Some of the other clubs participating are Trincity Nationals, St Ann’s Rangers (two competing teams), Tobago Chicas, Defence Force, Queen’s Park CC, Malvern FC, Real Dimension, Point Fortin Civic Centre, Central FC, Crown Trace FC and Petrotrin among others.

WoLF league official Janelle James explained the format of the League.

“The League format will be one where teams are placed into one of the three groups according to their geographical location. There will be two North/EAST groups and one South/Central group which would be named after pioneer female footballers - Izler Browne, Delia De Silva and Shirley Mae,” James stated.

The League’s winner will receive $12,000, the runners up $8,000 and the third placed team will walk away with $5,000.

T&T Women’s League president Sharon O’Brien said the League was anticipating a strong turnout of players.

“We are quite excited about the upcoming season as we expect quite a number of young players to come into the fray this season. We are also anticipating that there will be several of the senior players opting to enter the new Women’s Professional League which will make way for more of the younger players, some still in Secondary School, and more of the players at the community level, to have the opportunity to compete in the Women’s League (WOLF),” O’Brien said.

O’Brien said she was pleased that the local governing body was able to continue the League.

“We have kept it going and I am quite happy about this fact. While we expect more of the more experienced players to join the Premier League, we want to take the opportunity to wish them well and we hope to continue to have our league as a breeding ground for local women’s players who can hopefully graduate to the Pro League or go on to the national level or careers abroad,” O’Brien added.

The Women’s Football League falls under the umbrella of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association. The season’s fixtures will be released in due course.

Attin-Johnson lauds WoLF initiative.
By Sean Nero (Guardian).

Maylee Attin-Johnson, captain of the T&T national senior women’s football team, has described as “historic” Government’s decision to establish a Women’s Professional Football League (WoLF) and cabinet’s subsequent approval of $1.7 million to jump start the league. She expressed full support for the latest undertaking during an interview on the Sports Max Zone on Friday.

Sports Minister Brent Sancho announced Government plans during Thursday’s weekly post-Cabinet media briefing. The league will feature six franchise teams and facilitate the drafting of 40 foreign players. The latter move, said Sancho, was intended to give the league greater substance and hopefully bolster the quality of athletes on the field of play.

Attin-Johnson said, “This is an historic moment for us as females, so who won’t be excited about that? With Brent (Sancho) being the minister and having a sporting background in football–and he always had a lot of interest in terms of the development and treatment of female players on a whole, even before becoming a minister–I think it’s a fantastic initiative and we want to thank him for that.”

While she was unclear how funds for the programme would be dispensed, Attin-Johnson was confident this category of athlete would be compensated. “You are having a professional league, so you want to be paid as a professional and be treated as one. I will assume they have the right set of people behind this trying to put this together and making it a success,” she said.

Wolf was launched yesterday at the training grounds at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo with a series of activities including parade of teams and novelty events.

Twenty teams would compete in one division. They include the national Under-17 women’s team, currently coached by Rajesh Latchoo that was preparing for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. Other participating clubs included Trincity Nationals, St Ann’s Rangers (two competing teams), Tobago Chicas, Defence Force, Queen’s Park Cricket Club (footballers), Malvern FC, Real Dimension, Point Fortin Civic Centre, Central FC, Crown Trace FC and Petrotrin.

The League’s winner will receive $12,000, the runners up $8,000 and the third placed team will walk away with $5,000. Attin-Johnson said, at present, women footballers had to manage regular jobs to meet their financial obligations, while attempting to meet the demands associated with national duty.

“So now for three months, you can actually make a living and see how it works out. Hopefully, it would make a very huge impact in the first year, so next year, it would be even bigger,” she said. The captain said participation in women’s football had grown exponentially as witnessed with programmes from the U-13 programme up to senior team, which meant this aspect of the sport did not suffer from a paucity of players.

From her understanding of plans for the league, it was intended for expansion across the region. Under the scheme, she said, local clubs would be able to draft top-tier athletes from the Caribbean and Central America. “It will have a quality team and thereby, it will help us, the senior players, as well as the aspiring players in our country to play at a quality level leading up to the Pan American Games and to the Olympic qualifiers,” she said.

Had this country qualified for the (Fifa Women) World Cup, Attin-Johnson added, “Hopefully, it would have broadened the minds of the people in the country to support women’s football and invest in women’s football. But you know, God knows why we didn’t qualify and as disappointed as I am–and it was a colossal disappointment at that–God alone knows why we didn’t quality. The only thing we didn’t do on that day was score goals.”

WoLF launches one week ahead of kickoff.
By Andrew Gioannetti(Guardian).

Scores of footballers, mostly teens, yesterday took advantage of a one-week head start to familiarise themselves with their club rivals at the launch of the Women’s League Football (WoLF) a day which excluded football, but witnessed camaraderie made easy by an array of unconventional activities. Albeit on a dusty and arid Hasely Crawford Stadium training pitch in Mucurapo, the footballers, coaches, administrators, friends and relatives gathered in a light atmosphere ahead of the newly reformatted women’s league.

Matches are scheduled to kick off next weekend but the fixtures are yet to be finalised as some teams are yet to secure their match venues. They should be released by Wednesday, according to Wolf. What is certain is that there will be only one division of play, and no relegation or promotion as in previous years. Twenty teams will be split into three groups. Each team will play the other in their group once, before the top two advance to a “Big-Six” where they battle for the league title. There will also be a separate FA knockout competition.

Given that the most clubs are from the East/West corridor, they will be split into two North Groups. The third group comprises teams from both South and Central Trinidad. Tobago will be represented by one team, Tobago Chicas, and is included in North Group One. Other first time entrants include: Queen’s Park Cricket Club, which will field a women’s team in competition for the first time in its long history; Crown Trace FC, an ambitious Central-based club; Waterloo; Port-of-Spain-based Netshakers; and Northern Rush.

Amid the excitement of yesterday’s unorthodox games, Jinelle James, Wolf media representative and former national women’s team forward, gave her take on the upcoming Wolf campaign and what is expected when it meet the start of the new Ministry of Sport venture, the Professional Women’s Football League, which will kick off next month.

Although the two competitions will overlap and “may be a lot to manage”, according to James there is no disharmony between the two. “There is no conflict. Ultimately we are open to opportunities for all our players to gain exposure by competing at a high level of competition.”

The Wolf is an affiliate with the T&T Football Association (TTFA) and because of this, James suggested it is most important that current players as well a those who aspire to play on the national team, get back to regular football, and ideally play at the highest level of competition available to them.

It is understood that most clubs participating in Wolf will lose their best players, especially national team players, to the professional women’s league when it does start, as there are no contracts binding players to the amateur clubs. If a player registers for a club initially but then chooses to play for a franchise, the club can fill the gap by registering a new player with the league, but must do so no less than 48 hours before the club’s next match.

The Wolf will benefit from a voice in the women’s professional football league, through a representative, as will the Ministry of Sport and the TTFA. Because of this, James believes the players’ welfare will not be compromised. The representatives have not yet been determined.

James said she also welcomes the fact that the newly introduced league will welcome back several foreign-based nationals. Players from as far as China may be included among the 30-40 foreign players for the league. That, according to Minister of Sport Brent Sancho, who got the $1.7 million-plus sum approved by Cabinet on Thursday to assist with the initial administrative and operational expenses.

The league, which comprises six franchises for big businesses to buy into, will offer accommodation, meals and a salary, Sancho said in a recent interview. Local players can be drafted into a franchise when they hold trials later this month.

WoLF Clubs:

North 1: St Ann’s Rangers, St Augustine FC, Trincity Nationals, Tobago Chicas, Defence Force, National U-17.

North 2: Queen’s Park Cricket Club, Malvern FC, Net Shakers, Diego Martin, Northern Rush FA, Real Dimension, St Ann’s Rangers (second team).

South/Central: Central FC, La Brea, Ministry of Sport Schoolaz, Petrotrin, Pt Fortin Civic, Waterloo, Crown Trace FC.

WoLF president worries about timing of new league
By Sean Taylor (Express).

Scheduling concerns

On the eve of this season's Women's League Football (WoLF) action, doubts remain concerning the future of the local women's game.

The Women's Professional League (WPL) was announced in February by Minister of Sport, Brent Sancho, and is due to start in three month's time. With three weeks to go, the participating clubs have yet to be announced, nor has it been made clear whether the government or the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) would oversee the league.

The two leagues are set to operate independently of each other, as there would be no promotion or relegation stages. The Minister stated their intention to use the MLS model, and the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago are set to have screening for players on May 22 and 23, as well as the final player draft on May 29.

Elite players who already ply their trade in the WoLF are also going to be drafted into the WPL, as well as players from across the Caribbean and Latin America.

Leading clubs in the WoLF have already felt the sting of losing some of their more effective players. The league itself has been carded to be a developmental league for amateur players as well as players in the girls' secondary schools football league attempting to become professionals. However, it remains to be seen if they would be able to remain as relevant, with the expected exodus of players on the horizon.

TT WoLF president Sharon O'Brien preferred that at the very least, the two competitions schedule don't overlap.

"The WPL is a good move in a sense for the more experienced players to get more competitive experience. However in terms of the two running together, what has happened is some of our premier division clubs have lost players," she said.

"In terms of the WPL we believe that it should run either before or after, so the elite players can still play in the WoLF. Apparently from our understanding, the WPL is supposed to be modelled after the CPL where players play in the professional league and after they could return to the WoLF."

However, this has not yet been made explicitly clear by the WPL administration.

Communications Officer for the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago, Natasha Nunez-St Clair could not comment or clarify details of the league as she said the administration is still finalising the finer points of the competition. She said the Minister will be calling a press conference next week on the matter. The 2015 season of the TT WoLF will begin on Saturday.

WoLF kicks off
By Sean Taylor (Express).

The Women's Professional League (WPL) is due to begin next month. But the local women's football season will kick off today, when the Women's League Football (TT WoLF) will commence as planned.

The defending champions St Ann's Rangers look set to add to their trophy cabinet this year, but not if their challengers have anything to say about it.

Hot on their tail should be Point Fortin Civic Centre, who they edged by one point last season, as well as St Augustine FC, who are becoming an emerging threat.

The Rangers outfit headed by Jason Spence, who copped the Coach of the Year award at the recent launch of the league, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field, has moved up the ranks rapidly over the last few seasons.

"We are only three years young, so it was a very big achievement for us to come up from the initial first division to win the premier division three years later," Spence told the Express.

The main ingredient for Civic Centre's success was quite simple; home-grown talent.

"What we have are a number of players who I have had from school, most of them from the North Zone of football because I coach St Francois, so that's how I formed the team." Spence said. He didn't single out one particular outstanding player from last year, saying his team's strength was because their collective effort. "The goals were shared among the first team," he said.

"Some of my players were able to move on to the national Under-20 team, including Jo Marie Lewis, Annalise Cummings and Maya Matouk, while Tenesha Palmer was the second-string goalkeeper to Kimika Forbes in the World Cup qualifiers."

The coach has been active recently as he has mobilised the Under-20 national team, in preparation for competition as well as added two new recruits to Rangers. Despite preferring to rely on his home-grown players however, he has acquired Natasha St Louis and Afia Mathis, both formerly of Real Dimension.

Due to the emergence of the WPL, it is uncertain who would be certain contenders for the league this year Point Fortin have been directly affected by the new professional league. However Spence did identify Point Fortin and St Augustine as his expected challengers.

St Augustine coach Desiree Sarjeant also cited unity as the determining factor in her team's rise. "A lot of our players are past and present pupils from St Augustine Secondary. I don't singularly look out for one player who should make a difference; we try to emphasise that all of us collectively can get us to the pinnacle." she said.

Sarjeant remained grounded as far as her side's chances are concerned. "I'm happy that teams look at us as a threat. We don't see it like that, we just want to go out there and continue working hard."

St Augustine have been runner-up in the lower division and have finished in the top four in the premier divisions two years in a row. They finished third last year.

The WoLF competition will consist of 19 teams based in three groups, two based in the North and one for South/Central which are to be named after outstanding past women's players.

Rangers whip Defence Force
By Sean Taylor (Express).

Late goals from Patrice Superville, Anique Walker and Jo Marie Lewis resulted in reigning champions St. Ann's Rangers prevailing 3-1 over Defence Force, after Kalicia Robinson had put the Army/Coast Guard unit ahead early, when the 2015 Women's League Football (WoLF) season commenced Saturday.

It was the opening fixture of the new WoLF season and for most of the match it was the irresistible force against the immovable object. Rangers pressed forward and stated their intention as early as the sixth minute when a set piece from a corner went over bar.

But it was Defence Force which drew first blood. Against the run of play, 13 minutes into game, they capitalised from a set piece, with forward Robinson heading past Rangers' keeper Tenesha Palmer into an open net.

For the rest of the half, the Defence Force put in a performance worthy of their military roots as they hustled and harassed their opponents, making clearance after clearance while looking for another item from set pieces.

Rangers struggled to maintain possession, particularly since the arid conditions did not suit their passing game. The second half brought a rejuvenated Rangers outfit as they put even more pressure on the right side of their opposition's defence.

Sharain Cummings made several raids down the Rangers' left flank, sending dangerous crosses to Jo Marie Lewis, a half-time sub who provided a cutting edge the Ranger's had lacked in the first period.

The yellow shirts (Defence Force) conceded all territory to the reigning champs, but they appeared to be holding firm, limiting their opponents only to long-range shots and goal-mouth scrambles. Just as it seemed Defence Force were going to edge an upset win, Superville restored parity when she drilled home a cross from the right.

And Walker, who combined well with Lewis and had threatened for most of the second-half, was duly rewarded when she converted after a scramble in the area. Their defence finally breached, Defence Force conceded a third with mere seconds on the clock as Lewis drilled a free kick past the unsighted Melissa Joseph.

"We came on much stronger in the second half," said Walker. "We wanted nothing but a win, and the three points set the tone for the rest of the season.''

Rangers coach Jason Spence expected his charges would come good in the end. "We lived in the opponents half for the majority of the game, it was just a matter of time before it hit the back of the net," he said. Meanwhile, St Augustine FC also got off to a winning start with a 3-1 win over the national Under-17 team. Action in the league continues this weekend.

WoLF resumes on Sunday.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

CONCACAF Women's Day Saturday, so not matches

Goal-fest in the south, while traditional contenders stamped their authority, were the order of the day as matchday one of the 2015 Women's League Football (WoLF) rounded off over the weekend.

Point Fortin Civic ran riot over Crowne Trace 12-0, while La Brea Angels belied their name when they terrorised Waterloo Starlets, scoring 16 unanswered goals. The usual suspects Trincity Nationals, St Augustine FC and defending champs St. Ann's Rangers all registered opening victories, while newcomers Queen's Park CC stated their intent with a 4-0 win over Netshakers.

For the Point Fortin team, a hat-trick from Latavia Morris, and three seperate braces from Shennelle Jordan, Dennecia Prince and Latoya King established the fact that life in the WoLF could be a punishing experience.

Kimberly Coolie, Latoya Thomas and Javannah Moreno rounded off the scoring as they routed Crowne Trace 12-0 on Sunday. La Brea Angels decided they would steal the spotlight however, as they issued their own foobtalling lesson in a 16-0 demolition of Waterloo Starlets.

Up north, the underdogs were more competitive as the established teams had to work for their three points. In the "Delia De Silva" Group, Trincity Nationals edged Tobago Chicas 2-1 with Denisher Williams and Ranelle Pascal finding the back of the net, while Tsaianne Leander was the only scorer for the Tobago team.

St Augustine FC beat the National U-17s by an identical scoreline at the Eddie Hart Ground, while St Ann's Rangers had to chase a 1-0 deficit for the majority of the match before they scored three quick-fire goals at the end to romp to a well-deserved win over Defence Force.

Anique Walker put the defending champions in the lead after Patrice Superville converted from six yards out after a right-wing cross. Jo-Marie Lewis' free kick did nothing more than add salt to the wounds of the soldier/coastguard team, who fought to the very end to maintain their advantage.

Real Dimension, who dominated the women's game in 2012, opened their account with 3-0 win over Diego Martin Central. Newcomers Queen's Park CC also made a statement with a 4-0 thrashing of Netshakers at the Queens' Park Savannah, establishing their credentials in the league.

Matchday Two Fixtures:
(Due to the CONCACAF Women's Day, there will be no matches on Saturday)

Sunday

Ricarda Nelson Group
Northern Rush C.A. vs Diego Martin Central 4 p.m.
Malvern FC vs Netshakers FC 4 p.m
Real Dimension FC vs St Ann's Rangers 4 p.m.

These lopsided games are to be expected because women football in TT is still in the infancy state. It will take sometime for parity to take hold. It may take a it longer because women sports or anything, tend to be second fiddle in the pecking order. But that will change as women sports are given the resources to compete like their male counterparts.

La Brea Angels, QPCC register shutout wins.

Goals galore in WoLF

Goals galore was the order of the day in last weekend's Women's League Football (WoLF), when the action resumed nationwide. The goal-rush came mainly from the south-central division, or the "Izler Browne" as it's officially known.

La Brea Angels and Petrotrin continued their goal-scoring form, while the Central FC women's team came out on top in a seven-goal thriller. The Debisette sisters were in the mood as they scored seven goals between them in a 14-0 Angels romp over Crowne Trace.

Khadidra notched four goals while Khadisha scored a hat trick of her own. Gina Marie Williams also got four to her name, with Kayana Trim netting two and Tineisha Cobham had a solitary goal. Petrotrin also matched that total as Nikiesha Noel scored a quartet, and Dernelle Mascal scored a brace to stand out amongst the scorers. Goals from Latavia Morris, Javanah Moreno and Khaline Jacob were not enough to stop them from succumbing to defeat in a 4-3 roller coaster ride against Central FC.

Up in the north served up some footballing lessons as well. In the "Ricard Nelson" group, Queen's Park CC made a statement of their intent, thrashing Malvern 13-0. Stephanie Woo Ling registered six times on the scoresheet in a punishing encounter served up by the league first-timers. Real Dimension put six past Netshakers while St Ann's Ranger's youth team triumphed 3-1 over Northern Rush.

St. Ann's Rangers' main team continued their impressive run with a 6-1 win over National U-17 team, in the "Delia de Silva" group. Anique Walker, a former national youth player herself, put three past the keeper at the Dibe Recreation Ground in St James. Other hopefuls in the group St Augustine FC edged Tobago Chicas 3-2 at the Eddie Hart Ground, while Defence Force battled to a 1-1 draw with Trincity Nationals.

QPCC edge Diego in WoLF Football
By Sean Taylor (Express).

It was a frustrating afternoon for the Queen’s Park Cricket Club, as they had to wait until almost midway into the second half before opening the score at the St Mary’s Ground.

Winger Brittany Farah scored the lone goal in the 64th minute to help QPCC, one of the favourites in the Ricarda Nelson Group, to a 1-0 victory over the Diego Martin Central team in Women’s League Football action, yesterday.

The opening exchanges were untidy as no one was able to establish a foothold in the match. The Diego Martin contingent, who were level on nine points in the table with QPCC at the start of the day, came into the match with their game plan; which was to press with a high defensive line at every opportunity.

Diego had the best chance overall in the first half, as Breanna George wrapped her left foot around the ball for her free kick which had to be tipped over by the QPCC custodian, who was otherwise uncontested for the rest of the match.

The win brought QPCC up to three points behind Real Dimension, who had defeated them 3-0 at the same ground a fortnight ago.

WoLF action continues across the country today.

WoLF struggling to keep pace with WPL
T&T Newsday Reports.

WITH THE launch of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) last Thursday at the Police Barracks, St James, all eyes were on the Trinidad and Tobago women’s team players, as well as the international players invited for this tournament, set to make its mark on women’s football not only here in Trinidad and Tobago, but the entire region, including South and Central America.

Meanwhile, local clubs are ‘‘crying wolf’’ as many of their better players have moved across to the WPL, as it offers some monetary compensation and a more competitive stage to showcase their talents.

Last week, St Ann’s Rangers removed their champion team from the WoLF (Women’s League Football) as many players were lost to the WPL. Rangers have two teams in the WoLF and will continue with their youth team in the competition.

This now leaves 19 teams vying for the coveted 2015 Championship title.

This year, the league moved away from its usual Premier and first Division format, opting for a zonal competition in anticipation of the time when teams would lose some of their better players to the WPL. In that way, there would be an even cross-section of players among the teams, thus still making it competitive to some extent.

After zonal competition, the top two teams from each group and the two best overall third- placed teams would face off in a knockout Big 8 Finals. Dates are still to be confirmed along with the forthcoming FA Cup Competition.

Weekend Results (Izler Browne Division) -

Match Day Three -

POINT FORTIN CIVIC (13) - Denecia Prince 6, Javanah Moreno 3, Shenelle Jordan 2, Latavia Morris, Tamara Johnson vs WATERLOO STARLETS (0).

PETROTRIN (2) - Jahra Thomas, Britney Cooper vs LA BREA ANGELS (0).

Ricarda Nelson Division -

Match Day Five -

QUEEN’S PARK (1) - Brittney Farah vs DIEGO MARTIN CENTRAL (0).

Delia De Silva Division -

Match Day -

ST AUGUSTINE (3) - Patrice Campbell 2, Naomie Guerra vs DEFENCE FORCE (3).

Who are the WoLF sponsors? How much does TTFA invest in the developmental WoLF league? Can't you see that the concept of WPL is to attract interest from sponsors and the general public so that a WoLF league can develop ?
Title: Re: 2015 WoLF League Thread.

We'll see FS.

All these sponsors do is sponsor foreign players, ideas or league, nothing for the locals, I assure you when the WPL is over, the sponsors are gone with them.

Caribbean Airlines do not sponsor locals teams, look at them now.

Then again, locals dont have the brain and cooperation to archive anything.

Look at the mess with the TTFA.

They run the WOLF league though?

Go figure.

Timing - timing -  don't you think this league or whatever this is being played out would have been better served Asa prelude to the women's WCqualifiers?

Planning planning- what is the intent and long term purpose of this? How does this coincide with team preparations forPanam games?

Ah boi nothing more than political patronage

The WPL is specifically timed to prepare the girls for PanAm and Olympics as it appeared that there was no preparation in place. This is why the league was "rushed". Currently, the Senior Womens Team are playing a series of matches vs the foreign players. The national players should play 8 - 10 decent games (including WPL) as preparation.

Also, WoLF could have worked alongside WPL to ensure there was limited disruption to their league.

I didn't understand a lot of your last statement, but I get the drift: that somehow the government believes that a 6 week womens league will win them the election. There is nothing laudable or nothing deserving by alluding to the implicit demise of our TTFA- like them or not , they are there for a purpose. Like the present elected officials in government- however when apparent external forces are working against the TTFA to ensure its demise or to make the look bad it smells smack foa Colonial legacy of " divide and conquer"

I'm not sure who you're referring to here, but there is no "Colonial legacy of " divide and conquer"". The men's team has been funded as requested by TTFA and there is support from MoS for the women. Maybe you should be more concerned with the other 8 national football teams?

WoLF action continues today.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

The final standings for the Women's League Football's (WoLF) three groups are beginning to shape up. Matches will be played across the country in both the north/east groups as well as the south/central division today and tomorrow.

The Delia De Silva Group will take a different shape as points and standings have to be reshuffled to accommodate the departure of the reigning champions and now former group leaders, St Ann's Rangers. The team had to withdraw from this year's competition, citing their exodus of stars to the WPL as the cause. St Augustine FC who currently have seven points, will most likely be moved up into first place, while Trincity Nationals, always a contender trail them by one point.

Real Dimension continued their resurgence after a dismal 2014. They have yet to concede, and have scored 31 goals in he Ricarda Nelson group. Among their scalps include talented newcomers QPCC, whom they defeated at the St Mary's College Grounds on early this month. Queen's Park are hot on their tails level on 15 points, but have played an extra match. Their latest was an impressive, but hard-fought 3-1 win in the midweek against a St Ann's Rangers youth team, Melissa Woo Ling's crucial double helped them keep pressure on Dimension.

In the south and central, things aren't so clustered however. Despite the points being close, the gulf in class is obvious as Petrotrin and La Brea Angels just won't stop scoring tonnes of goals. Petrotrin, who enjoyed a 2-0 win over their nearest rivals La Brea Angels last Sunday, are the undisputed leaders with 12 points, while La Brea sit in second with nine points. Point Fortin Pioneers and Central FC are also on nine points however, but they have an inferior goal difference.

The top two teams in each of the three groups qualify for the Big Eight competition, while the two best third-placed teams will make up the remaining slots. The WoLF will also feature an FA Cup competition which will see all the 19 remaining teams vie for the trophy to close off the season.

Dimension, QPCC in WoLF Big Eight
By Sean Taylor (Express).

Women's League Football (WoLF) action continued last weekend, with the places for the upcoming Big Eight competition up for grabs. Real Dimension, St Augustine FC and Petrotrin were all in winners’ row, as they continued their good form in matches which took place across the country.

This year's WoLF competition had to be reshuffled as a result of the Women's Premier League, which is being played simultaneously. The league segment has been separated into three groups based on geographical location, with two north/east divisions, as well as a south/central division. Dimension, St Augustine and Petrotrin all top their respective groups after six rounds of matches.

The top two teams in each group will automatically qualify for the Big Eight knockout competition, as well as the two best third-placed teams.

Real Dimension have bounced back to the form from their glory days, as they have maximum points from six matches, winning their group. Their 18-point haul includes 34 unanswered goals. QPCC, debutants this season, have also been impressive and finished second, three points behind. Diego Martin are currently third, however their goal differential will not be enough for them to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

St Augustine have calmly stepped in and replaced defending champions St Ann's Rangers at the top of their group, as the Rangers had to withdraw from the competition last week. The "Green Machine" who have ten points, beat the National Under-17s 2-0 over the weekend, and currently lead them by three points. The Under-17s were able to bounce back on Wednesday, beating Defence Force 7-0 with all goals coming in a very one-sided second half. Trincity Nationals are the best poised of the third-placed teams, sitting just a point behind the U-17 team with six points.

In the south, it has been mostly a two-tiered affair, with the upper teams in the table clearly in a class of their own. Petrotrin have 15 points, while La Brea Angels are on 12. Point Fortin Poineers who had a good 2014 season, are third with nine points and should be comfortably through to the Big Eight, as long as they keep fourth-placed Central FC at bay. The Poineers have a mammoth +27 goal differential which works in their favour for progression.

This weekend's fixtures

WoLF competition approaches climax.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

The Women’s League Football (WoLF) competition is in its final stages, as the Big Eight competition kicked off on Sunday, with Real Dimension and Tobago FC advancing to the semi-final stage of the competition.

Real Dimension are edging closer to the title but were made to work in their quarter-final clash at the Edinburgh 500 Recreation Ground, as they beat Point Fortin Civic 2-1 to march on to the last four.

Tobago FC had no such problem, though, as they put six past La Brea at Caroni Savannah Road to romp into the semi-final round.

QPCC were scheduled to play St Augustine FC in what promises to be a cracker. However, their match on Saturday at the Patna Grounds in Diego Martin was postponed due to the stormy weather.

QPCC will now play the “Green Machine” today at the same ground, with kick-off scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Patna Grounds will once again be treated to quarter-final action, as Diego Martin take on Petrotrin on Saturday, rounding off the quarter-final stage of the WoLF Big Eight competition.

Today

St Augustine FC v QPCC—Patna Recreation Ground 7 p.m.

Saturday

Diego Martin v Petrotrin—Patna Recreation Ground 4 p.m.

TTFA Media.

Director of Women’s Football and Head Coach of the Trinidad and Tobago Senior Women’s team, Carolina Morace, recently held a workshop with coaches from the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s League Football (TT WoLF).

The workshop comprised of 2 separate sessions, the first was an introductory meeting held on Wednesday 17 May at Ato Boldon with focus on warm up and fitness exercises while the second session was a classroom and field session that focused on zonal defending, held on May 27th at the same venue.

Morace has decided that the players on Senior and U-20 Teams will be released to train and play with their Clubs while the U17s will be entered as a team into the Premier Division. She said the main aim of this Workshop was to try to create a link between Clubs and National Team and to share her philosophy.

She continued that the information presented did not have to be used but moreso to act as a guideline to give the coaches ideas for their teams. In the end, Kenrick Hoyte, General Manager, Real Dimension WFC thanked Morace and Williams profusely for taking the time to meet and share information with them. In turn, Morace stated that they are available for any assistance the coaches may need going forward.

Warrick is new Women’s League President
T&T WOLF Media

Susan Joseph-Warrick has replaced Sharon O’Brien as the new President of Women’s League Football (WOLF). Warrick was voted in as President at the organization’s Annual General Meeting held on April 25, 2019. She will be supported by Kenrick Hoyte (Vice President), Christine Elizabeth Ann Rose ( Treasurer), Nadia James (Assistant Secretary Operations), Annleyes Collette (Assistant Secretary Administration), Claire George (Assistant Secretary Competition), Arnold Murphy and Mohan Persad (Ordinary Members), Shari John (PRO) and Jamilya Mohammed (General Secretary).

A former Manager in the Hotel and Entertainment industries, Warrick is the parent of national players, Shanelle and Jonelle Warrick Cato, and has been involved in women’s football since 2001, as part owner of the Trincity National’s Football Club, which includes the Trincity Nationals Women’s team. She has served as vice president of WOLF for the past two years.

Looking ahead to the future, Warrick expressed her desire to build on the foundation left by O’Brien while also focusing on the development of the women’s game at all levels. She also hopes to get relevant stakeholders more involved in the organization as she aims for greater Transparency, Accountability and Co-operation moving forward.

“There is a general misconception that WoLF is just about a football league, but it is actually the body responsible for the development of the women’s game” said Warrick. “We would like to get back to what we believe is important to develop the right skills in our players from a young age, both on and off the field, while also helping to equip coaches and administrators with the tools necessary to do this.”

And, while being cognizant of the challenges facing the organization, particularly financial, her goal is to build the WOLF brand in order to make it more attractive to corporate sponsors.

“Women’s football has tremendous potential for growth. Globally, it is one of the leading sports for women, but we have not been able to capitalize on this as a country and aid our young women in taking advantage of the many opportunities available to them. We hope to do our part to change this.”

Warrick said she is hoping to get much needed support due to WOLF from the TTFA and hopes that all stakeholders can come together to strengthen women’s football in T&T.

TT WOLF kicks off today.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

THE 2019 local women’s football season will kick off today when TTWOLF (TT Women's League Football) hosts its seven-a-side tournament. The tournament is open to TTWOLF members only and will take place from 10 am to 6 pm at the Eddie Hart Ground in Tacarigua.

The event will be the first for the new TTWOLF executive, led by Susan Joseph-Warrick and is expected to attract a number of teams as it has in the past. Warrick urged fans, teams and players to come out in their numbers to show their support for women’s football.

“TTWOLF would like to encourage all supporters of women’s football to come out and show their support,” said Warrick. “Building the sport requires the entire football community, not just the TTWOLF executive, so as we focus on doing our part, we are looking forward to all stakeholders doing theirs and supporting us on this journey.”

The League itself is carded to begin on June 8 and Warrick explained that TTWOLF is working to raise the profile of the women’s game moving forward.

“Despite the challenges we are facing, we are working tenaciously to put things in place to ensure the league comes off successfully,” she said. “We believe that women’s football is still a sport loved by many and our history will show as much, we just have to give people something to believe in again.”

TTFA leaves WoLF in the dark.
By Jelani Beckles (Newsday).

Joseph-Warrick – No consultation on women’s football

PRESIDENT of the TT Women’s League Football (TT WoLF) Susan Joseph-Warrick is upset that the WoLF is not contacted when important decisions involving women’s football are made in this country, pointing to the alleged hiring of Stephan DeFour recently to run the women’s teams.

Yesterday, other TT Football Association (TTFA) members Keith Look Loy and Rayshawn Mars joined Joseph-Warrick in outlining their issues with the David John-Williams led TTFA. The trio also represented other board members Joseph Taylor and Colin Partap.

Joseph-Warrick, reading a statement from WoLF, at a press conference yesterday, at the Normandie Hotel, in St Ann’s, said the women’s programme does not feel part of the process.

“T&T Women’s League for Football will like to express its disappointment with being constantly disregarded by the TTFA in matters related to the women’s national programme. We find it highly unprofessional on the TTFA’s part and damaging to the effective development of the women’s game in T&T.”

In a press release, on Tuesday, the TTFA said. DeFour has not been appointed as coach of the T&T Under-17, Under-20 and senior teams. It is also alleged that DeFour has already recruited people to work in his technical staff.

Joseph-Warrick finds it strange that a coach, who has not been appointed, is recruiting members of his staff. “We find it curious that a coach that has not been appointed is recruiting staff in the capacity of the national coach. I personally know Stephan. I don’t have a problem with him being appointed, I would like to say it is the manner in which it has happened, without our knowledge. It is our opinion that any decision regarding the appointment of the staff to the women’s team should be discussed with us TT WoLF.

We acknowledged that in the past TT WoLF was largely only concerned with the running of the local football league, (but) we wish to point out however that TT WoLF is responsible for women’s football in T&T in general.”

Joseph-Warrick is displeased that there is little hope that the men’s and women’s footballers will compete at the Olympic qualifiers later this year due to funding.

Joseph-Warrick said the T&T women’s footballers are disheartened that they will have to miss out on the 2020 Olympic qualifiers in October.

“They are not happy, I am not happy, WoLF is not happy because we train as young people to make national teams to then represent our countries.

For this to be taken away from us it does not (sit) well with them. We only have the (national) 17s and the 15s which are the groups of girls that are training, but we have 20s who have a tournament later this year and they are not in training right now, so they are not happy at all.”

Joseph-Warrick said she wants to continue working with the women’s footballers, but may have no choice but to resign if the TTFA continues to be run in this manner.

“I want to resign, but then my heart hurts for these young ladies because they need strong representation and I need to be there for them. If this continues I may not have a choice (but to leave).”

Police kick-off with three points
By Keith Clement (Guardian).

Goals from Shakeema Forestine, Anique Walker and Shakeema Forestine helped Police registered the first victory, a 3-2 win over Club Sando in the T&T WOLF's Football League which kicked off its 2019 season at UTT O'Meara Campus Grounds on Saturday.

All three goals came in the first half, but Club Sando which played with more purpose in the second half got an own-goal from Tia Henry and the veteran T&T standout Ahkeela Mollon further reduced the deficit. However, with 28 minutes to play the southerners could not muster another item to even seek a share of the points, whikle their defence contained every attack Police threw at them in the second stanza.

However, before the on-field action Susan Joseph-Warrick, the newly elected president of the organisation addressed the gathering with comprised 12 teams in the Premiership and First Division - Police FC, Club Sando, QPCC, St Augustine FC and St Augustine Juniors, Trincity Nationals, Defence Force, Malvern, Central Women, UTT, Tobago Chicas and Jewels FC.

She said, "I want to welcome everyone to the opening of the 2019 Women’s Football Season. We expect that it will be a competitive one and will go a long way in helping to prepare our local players for the next level of football. As you all no doubt know, it is important that girls are given the opportunity to play sports at a competitive level and it is our goal to increase the available opportunities for them to do so. This competition is where our national players come from, except for those who reside abroad, so we must remain committed to its’ growth."

Joseph-Warrick continued, "We want to ensure you that the women’s league is only one event among many that we have planned. TTWOLF, as many are unfortunately unaware, is responsible for the development of women’s football in T&T, not just the running of a league. We cannot fund national teams, at least not at present, but we can ensure that the players making those are better equipped to succeed, or at least able to make the transition easier. To this end, it is our goal to host more competitive events, fun events to attract more women and girls to the sport, community outreach initiatives to build our fanbase and off-field activities to help with the holistic development of our ladies.

TTWOLF needs the support of all stakeholders. We urge corporate T&T to get on board, the government to support, The TTFA to bridge the gaps in national team development, fans to come out and players to play to the best of their ability, with the highest degree of sportsmanship. We also want to remind players that while seeking the public and corporate Trinbago’s support, it is also important to support your own first. As we open this competition today, the FIFA Women’s World Cup is taking place, and we lament the fact that our girls are not in France. That while we are happy for Jamaica, we feel that it should have been us, given how close we have come on many occasions."

St. Augustine 2 (Aaliyah Prince 35', Chrissy Mitchell 84') vs QPCC 2 (Stephanie Woo Ling 4', Jessica Harragin 42')

UTT, Club Sando draw 1-1 in WoLF
By Yannick Quintal (T&T Newsday
)

UTT and Club Sando met at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium's Training Ground in Marabella yesterday in a Game Day Four fixture of the TT Women’s Football League (WoLF).

Club Sando and UTT shared possession in the first half of the game. However UTT had more chances in the first half while Club Sando had difficulty unlocking UTT’s back four. UTT defender Lorall Romain rarely let anyone past her all game long, pestering Club Sando’s attacking options and shutting down any potential plays.

UTT would open the scoring midway through the first half. Striker Zoe Swift received a well-delivered ball and placed it home with a left-footed strike.

However, in the second half, it was all Club Sando, as they dominatedg possession for most of the way and getting some key chances as well. Alexcia Ali followed up a solid first half with an even better second half, showing an extra burst of pace down the right flank.

The equaliser would come towards the final 15 minutes of the game. After some build up play on the right wing, Latifha Pascall would receive a pass a few yards outside the UTT penalty box. She rifled a shot and it would deflect off the crossbar again. This time, Aaliyah Pascall was at the right place at the right time, to secure the equaliser for Club Sando.

Unbeaten leaders of the T&T Women's League Football, Trincity Nationals and second-placed Queen's Park Cricket Club, were big winners when matches continued on Saturday and Sunday.

At the Eddie Hart Ground, Tacarigua, on Sunday, Trincity Nationals made it four wins from as many matches with an 11-2 hammering of St Augustine Juniors, with Kaydeen Jack scoring a hat-trick while the trio of Jennifer Lopez, Shanelle Warrick and Natisha John scoring two goals each.

The duo of Crystal Mollineaux and Ranelle Pascall added the other goals for Trincity Nationals, who leads the table with a maximum 12 points, two more than the trio of Queen's Park, St Augustine FC and Club Sando.

For St Augustine Juniors, winners of one of their five matches, C Woods and Mia Mitchell got a goal each

The Parkites, who sit second on the table on goal-difference ahead of St Augustine FC and Club Sando, were in a more dominant mood and crushed cellar-placed Central Women 22-0, led by five goals from Ashlee Alonzo, a beaver-trick by Afiyah Cornwall and three from Shaunalee Govia at New Settlement Ground, Chaguanas, while St Augustine FC slipped past University of T&T (UTT) 1-0 at Frederick Settlement Ground, Caroni.

In the other matches, Club Sando whipped Tobago Chicas 3-1 with a strike each from Kayla Taylor, Ahkeela Mollon and Aaliyah Pascal at the Mt Pleasant Recreation Ground, while Defence Force stunned host Police, minus top striker Anique Walker, 2-1 at the St James Police Academy Ground, St James.

By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Celine Loraine made it 12 goals in two matches when she netted eight times to lead Jewels to a 14-0 triumph over Central Women when matches in the T&T Women’s League Football (WoLF) continued at Signal Hill Recreation Ground, Signal Hill, Tobago on Tuesday night.

In addition to Loraine, who scored four times in Jewels 7-1 whipping of the University of T&T on Sunday last, Tiah Crichlow and Darrianne Henry added two goals each while Derisha Bristol and Lloysha Simon chipped in with the others.

The win was the fourth in nine matches for Jewels, now with 12 points in seventh spot, ten behind leaders Club Sando.

Also on Tuesday night, national striker Anique Walker scored in each half to fire Police FC past St Augustine Juniors 5-0 at Knowles Street Recreation Ground, Curepe.

The Lawwomen took the lead in the 11th minute through the former national player, Jo-Marie Lewis before Walker made it 2-0 four minutes later while Maya Matouk extended the advantage to 3-0 in the 40th minute.

In the second-half, Minty Cruickshank made it 4-0 in the 62nd while Walker got her double in the 69th to complete the scoring and solidify her team's hold on the sixth spot with 14 points from nine matches, six adrift of the trio of Queen's Park Cricket Club, St Augustine FC and Defence Force.

Club Sando takes WoLF title
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Club Sando was crowned champion of the T&T Women’s League Football (WoLF) but only on goal-difference from St Augustine FC when the final round of matches took place on Sunday.

Playing at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, Club Sando blanked Jewels FC 3-0 with a goal each from Ahkeela Mollon, in the 28th, Dennecia Prince in the 29th and Dernelle Mascall, ten minutes from full-time to end with 26 points, level with St Augustine FC who battled past Defence Force 2-1 at Knowles Street Recreation Ground, Curepe.

With her strike, Mollon also sneaked ahead of her rivals for the "Golden Boot" award for most goals with 17 with Queen's Park Cricket Club's (QPCC) Afiiyah Cornwall, a goal behind, followed by Tobago Chicas' Tsaianne Leander (15), and the pair of Jewels' Celine Loraine and University of T&T's (UTT) Shenelle Jordan, with 14 each.

Chrissy Mitchell put St Augustine FC ahead after 20 minutes, only for national defender Jemila Mathlin to get Defence Force on level terms in the 35th.

However, Shenelle Maynard's 72nd-minute strike proved decisive for St Augustine, to grab all three points, but in the end, Club Sando's plus-49 goal-difference to their plus-45 proved the telling factor.

A day earlier at the St Mary's Ground, Freeport, Trincity Nationals moved ahead in the title race with a 19-0 hammering of cellar-placed Central Women.

Shanelle Warrick led the way with five goals for Trincity Nationals while Raynell Pascall and Natisha John added beaver tricks and the duo of Moenesa Mejias and Nickisha James two each.

In Saturday's other matches, UTT and St Augustine Juniors battled to a 2-2 draw while Police FC won by default from Malvern Sports Club.

The match between QPCC and Tobago Chicas carded for Mt Gomery Recreation Ground, Tobago, was not played after both teams showed up at the venue with uniforms too close in likeness for the match officials and the outcome will be determined by the league's disciplinary committee.

Warrick condems De Four attack on WoLF.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Susan Joseph-Warrick, President of the T&T Women's League Football (WoLF) has hit back at senior national women's football team coach, Stefan De Four after he blamed the players lack of fitness and subpar performances of the local league.

De Four was in charge of the senior women's team, which failed to advance from its Caribbean Football Union Women's Qualifying Round-Robin Pool A qualifiers which also involved St Kitts/Nevis, Dominican Republic, Antigua & Barbuda, and Aruba.

T&T which hosted the qualifiers at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva ended third in the five-team round-robin series after beating Aruba 3-0 and Antigua & Barbuda 5-0, and drawing with the Dominican Republic 0-0 after losing 4-1 to pool winners, St Kitts/Nevis.

In a release to the media via email Joseph-Warrick said: TT WOLF wishes to condemn the attack and blame hurled at its organization by coach Stefan De Four, for the lack of fitness and subpar performance of Trinidad and Tobago National Women's team in the recently concluded Olympic Qualifiers held in Trinidad.

The release reads: "A bad carpenter blames his tools. Coach De Four had screening for our local girls since mid- August when he began training with the Senior ladies 6 weeks before the tournament, not 10 days as he would like us to believe.

What did he and his staff do to improve the fitness of the girls?

Our League finished on August 24th. He had the girls weeks before that. Yes, our season was short this season(11games) and Yes, it needs to be longer and it will be going forward.

But Coach De Four needs to take responsibility for the team's failure and his shortcomings in team preparation, player selection and tactics.

Did he select our best TT WOLF players - our top goalscorer, our top goalkeeper did they feature?

Why nott?

Were they blacklisted?

TT WOLF has and is doing its part to increase the women's player pool and increase the level of play afforded to our women who go on to our various national teams, universities and colleges abroad.

How many TT WOLF games did coach De Four see? 2...3.

Who were our best defenders, midfielders, forwards?

Mr DeFour - Did you invite them as you did our foreign-based girls?

What about their level of fitness. Who are you going to blame for their performance or lack of?

It appears that none of our national coaches wants to shoulder the blame when our teams (Men, Women and boys) fall short or turn in poor performances. It's always the players, the schools, the clubs and now TT WOLF at fault.

NO, Mr DeFour, look in the mirror. Mr DeFour, you should not only apologize to TT WOLF, but it's players and clubs, who feed all national programmes. We continue to have the major women's football league in T&T and possibly the Caribbean developing junior and senior players. We are doing our part, now you do yours."

Susan Joseph-Warrick: The wolf of football
By Narissa Fraser (T&T Newsday)

Eat, sleep, attend meetings, make calls, talk football, repeat. This is a typical day in the life of T&T Women's League Football (WoLF) president Susan Joseph-Warrick.

The mother of three, who lives in Trincity, is married to Joel Warrick, head coach of local club Trincity Nationals FC. She is also part owner of the club and a T&T Football Association (TTFA) board member.

Joseph-Warrick believes the future is female and wants to represent the interests of young women in T&T.

Before her involvement in football, Joseph-Warrick worked in the hotel and fast food industries for 25 years. She later got into the local cinema business, and was general manager at Caribbean Cinemas 8 and the operations manager at Digicel IMAX. She has been retired for the past three years.

"My boss (at IMAX) was amazing. What I enjoyed most was that everyone, except the chairman, were women, and women of power. The financial controller, the CEO, me, and the marketing manager were all women. And believe you me, we were fantastic. We were great together."

She told WMN her love for football grew a result of her husband being a coach and a player. He was also a teacher at the Arima Boys' Government School. Their now 25-year-old club consists of an academy and seven teams.

"My love for it started a very long time ago. Fortunately, for me, when we decided to start our club, we decided to formulate this club in Trinicty. My son was part of first set of kids we would have had in the environment. And of course the daughters came along."

She is the mother of national players Shanelle and Jonelle Warrick-Cato.

"The passion came along. They were always in the savannah – what else could they fall in love with but football?"

She recalled enjoying football as a child as she grew up in a household that loved sports. But she said in those days, it was uncommon for women to be involved in the sport.

"Women were not so much featured then. It was a man's sport then. The boys played football so that's when you got the chance to go out and see. So obviously, the only ones you could have known were the Maradonnas and the Peles. Those were the teams and names you were familiar with because they were always in the news, they were always on the TV."

Although she doesn't play, she said, "I played one or two, what we would call fete matches because we had to take part in it but it was a nice experience."

And now, being part of yet another sporting family, she said there is a specific TV dedicated to sports only.

"My entire living room is full of trophies. I actually told my husband quite recently I think we have to build a room. Because it's not just trophies of the various teams that we have, we also have trophies of my kids' accomplishments – most goals, MVP (most valuable player), you name it. Year after year."

She said their club has been successful and has accomplished a lot this year. The under-13 and under-15 teams even went to Orlando, Florida in April to participate in the Florida Classic.

"It was a lot of hard work, getting everything in place, all the visas, raising the funds. Our club is not sponsored, so basically it's funds of both my husband and I, that of fund-raisers that we would have, as well as reaching out to a few corporate people who would give whatever they can to assist with something of that magnitude."

Initially, there were only male teams but in 2009, the first female team was created, and her daughters began to play for the club as well.

On November 19, 1989, T&T's senior men's national team (Strike Squad) was one point away from qualifying for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, but fell 1-0 to the US. It was a heartbreaking moment for football fans throughout the country – including Joseph-Warrick, for more than one reason.

"In 1989, I was pregnant with my eldest daughter and I literally wanted to cry because I could not go to the stadium. My husband was like no 'There's no way we could go.'"

"I think that would have been one of the major events as a young person that you wanted to be part of, and just the mere fact that I could not go. I mean, I watched it on TV but it was an historic event, so you'd feel like you need to be part of it."

She said she was disappointed at the result but was also happy the team had even reached that far.

Then came along the moment she had been waiting years for – T&T finally qualified for its first World Cup. In 2005, then national defender Dennis Lawrence scored the winning goal against Bahrain, booking the team's spot in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. The team was eliminated at the groups stage of the finals but still warmed the hearts of patriots and local football fans.

"It was exhilarating. It was phenomenal. It (the excitement) still goes on today. We are so passionate. I can't recall not going to any games. We were always there as a family. And once it's not in the country, we make sure we watch it on TV."

Fast-forward to 2014, to a moment that would have hit a little closer to home for her. The senior women's national team needed just one point to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, but a late goal from Ecuador shattered their hopes. Joseph-Warrick said she was devastated.

"It was too emotional. I saw the hard work put in by those young ladies. We should have (qualified). We should have. Imagine we had a women's team where the stadium was full. It was full. I mean, to me that was like wow. The women were just hitting out of the ball park right through.

"I'm thinking about it and I want to cry because I felt like that would have been it."

She said she and her daughters had a good relationship with most of the players, and that they would often visit their home. Because of this, she said, the loss was also personal.

Joseph-Warrick became TTWoLF president in April, after being vice-president for two years. She was uncontested at the elections.

"Doing this here for women now, it's just an addition to what I've accomplished so far. It's being a woman in a man's world, because before I went in the business it was basically a man's world. I guess I get the excitement when I have to prove myself."

She said being the league president has opened her eyes to many underlying issues in local women's football.

"I felt like I could have made a bigger difference. As the vice-president, I wouldn't say I was limited but a lot of information I was not privy to became available to me. It's one thing to watch it from that side of the fence. When you're on the outside, you looking at things like, 'Oooh,' and when you come on the inside, you get to see exactly what these girls have to deal with."

She said the women's programme currently lacks funding and structure, adding that the available managers and coaches are not enough. Sometimes, she said, more than one team had the same technical staff.

She will be vying for second vice president in the TTFA elections on November 24, and said if successful, her team will be able to move women's football forward.

She told WMN her favourite footballers include US players Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach, Argentina's Lionel Messi and England's David Beckham.

"My first love, and I still have a big picture of my daughter when she met him, was David Beckham. That was my boy, he was awesome. I like good football."

Asked what advice she would give to young and upcoming female footballers, she said, "I would tell them to look up, smile, and know that we are here for them. I am here for them.

"As the proud mother of two national players who has seen the good, the bad; lived the highs and the lows, and seeing first-hand what they experienced, I don't want any young lady who wants to get involved in this sport have to go through what my daughters went through. As well as current young ladies, from the past players to the present players that they going through it right now."

She said she has a lot of great plans and visions for the years to come, and that she can only see things getting better.

WoLF ‘postpones’ competition until 2021; Warrick: We couldn’t be ready in time.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

The Women’s League of Football (WoLF) will not kick a ball in 2020, after its executive committee decided to ‘postpone’ its competition until 2021. The decision was made on Saturday with a vote of 5-2 in favour of the postponement.

WoLF president Susan Joseph-Warrick confirmed the decision today. The other members of the WoLF executive members are: vice-president Kenrick Hoyte, general secretary Jamilya Muhammad, assistant secretary Nadia James and members Claire George, Annleyess Colette, Christine Rose and Mohan Persad. Muhammad was absent for the meeting.

The WoLF executive, via a press release, said the decision was made to protect its players.

“[…] It was determined that the health and safety of the players is of utmost importance,” stated James. “This was obviously a difficult decision, however, this is a decision that was made in order to protect everyone involved. We will start planning for the 2021 season shortly, and would engage all clubs in a subsequent email…”

Joseph-Warrick, who is also TTFA vice-president and is involved in a lawsuit against the Fifa normalisation committee, said the WoLF competition usually runs from April to the last week in July—so as to avoid a clash with the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) and to allow some participation from players in foreign universities, who generally return abroad in August.

The current scarcity of financial resources and the inability of teams to prepare as usual, due to Covid-19 restrictions were strong factors.

“We get no financial assistance from anyone and the last time we got help from the TTFA was [in 2016] and that was TT$50,000,” Joseph-Warrick told Wired868. “All the money we raise to cover prize money and so on, we raise ourselves from pounding the pavement.

“This year, we wanted to get insurance for the players but we couldn’t. Some of the clubs needed to organise themselves financially and they didn’t have the time. Remember too that we have teams from Tobago who would have to travel back and forth, so it is a big commitment.

“And also we are just opening back up, so teams would not have been training.”

The WoLF competition is played on community grounds rather than in national stadia and Joseph-Warrick, who said she would have loved to compete, said the executive considered the issue of proper sanitisation and the wellbeing of players and spectators. Clubs were consulted for feedback before the executive met.

Joseph-Warrick noted that the younger players still, hopefully, have SSFL competition to look forward to. Otherwise, the executive will continue fund-raising efforts and hope to sponsor exhibition matches later this year—once financially possible.

If not, it’s a case of: ‘see you in 2021’.

Joseph-Warrick declined comment on anything related to her United TTFA slate, their legal matter with Fifa and recent revelations about the stewardship of local football president William Wallace.

WoLF cries: United TTFA vice-president Susan Joseph-Warrick accused of side-stepping women’s football constitution
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)

WITH United TTFA’s High Court action against FIFA proceeding despite attempts by delegates to stop it, Women’s League Football (WOLF) president Susan Joseph-Warrick is being accused by executive members of seeking to use the organisation to her own gain.

Joseph-Warrick was elected Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) second vice-president last November after being on a “United TTFA” slate that also included TTFA president William Wallace, Clynt Taylor and Sam Phillip.

The WoLF executive is claiming its president scheduled a WoLF extraordinary general meeting (EGM) set for September 14, without the input of her executive, then cancelling it once United TTFA’s High Court injunction action succeeded.

Joseph-Warrick is named as a party to United TTFA’s High Court action against FIFA. United TTFA on Monday successfully obtained an injunction blocking the majority of TTFA members from holding a similar EGM which had been scheduled for Tuesday, where they would have voted on whether to sanction or stop United TTFA’s court action against FIFA.

United TTFA had repeatedly deemed the TTFA EGM illegal because of the manner in which it was called. United TTFA had argued that TTFA delegates should not have gone to FIFA Normalisation Committee chairman Robert Hadad to convene the meeting, but rather the TTFA general secretary Ramesh Ramdhan, who is currently suspended.

On condition of anonymity, WoLF executive members have indicated their objection to the WoLF president’s action on similar grounds. Having met previously, the WoLF executive had taken a position against United TTFA’s court action against FIFA.

Joseph-Warrick is accused of breaching article 29 of WOLF constitution, in by-passing executive members, and calling the meeting herself.

Article 29 states: “The executive committee may convene an extraordinary general meeting at any time.”

Queries were also made about the legitimacy of holding a virtual EGM.

“I am very disappointed with the flagrant disregard for the constitution that we all voted to uphold. The fact that today’s meeting was not even brought before the executive of WoLf for discussion, shows that this organisation has lost its sense of democracy and is moving more toward mob rule. One person’s view cannot supersede the fact that we are guided by the laws embedded in our constitution. We cannot and must not let our emotions guide us,” a WOLF executive member communicated.

Replying to queries from her executive on September 10, Joseph-Warrick agreed that the “executive committee” should have been the ones calling an EGM. And citing Covid-19 restrictions, she stated that any discrepancies can be “revised at our next AGM”.

“I am writing in response to the question of who should call an EGM of executive and membership,” stated Joseph-Warrick, “I am in agreement of Article 29 of TTWoLF Constitution which speaks clearly to the requirements of a conventional meeting.”

Joseph-Warrick put forward the right of the WoLF membership to have their say, as the reason for her action.

“We the elected officers of TTWoLF, represent the membership and they must have a say on the future of women football in Trinidad and Tobago,” Joseph-Warrick’s communiqué stated, “Whatever is the decision of the membership is what we should represent.”

Similarly, both T&T Pro League acting chairman and former Sport Minister Brent Sancho and Normalisation Committee chairman Robert Hadad had argued that as the majority, TTFA members deserved to have their views heard, when Joseph-Warrick and her United TTFA colleagues were seeking an injunction from Justice Carol Gobin to thwart the EGM.

Commenting on the injunction matter on I95FM on Monday, Hadad said: “Thirty-five of 47 of your (TTFA) membership, the people who put you in power, are saying they want to meet with you. If I am not the conduit and you have taken me to court to stop me from having the EGM, then you should have the EGM.”

Prior to Gobin granting United TTFA the injunction, Joseph-Warrick also advised her executive that should United TTFA successfully obtain the injunction, then the WoLF September 14 EGM would be called off.

“An injunction has been filed by United TTFA against tomorrow’s (Monday’s TTFA EGM) meeting. So if the result is in favour, our (WOLF) meeting will be cancelled,” the WoLF president advised.

Once United TTFA obtained its injunction, Joseph-Warrick subsequently communicated that WoLF’s EGM was cancelled.

“Good evening executive and membership. Consistent with today’s order from Justice Gobin regarding a proposed meeting called by Robert Hadad to discuss the FIFA vs TTFA matter, today’s TTWoLF meeting is cancelled in order to avoid any semblance of contempt of court, “Joseph-Warrick stated.

Joseph-Warrick resigns from TTFA, WoLF
By Keith Clement (Guardian).
Lead Editor Sports

Susan Joseph-Warrick, the second vice president of the T&T Football Association (TTFA) and president of the Women's Football League (Wolf), has announced her resignation from all football in T&T and has become the first casualty of the legal battle between the TTFA and FIFA on Friday. Joseph-Warrick's announcement to her executive comes less than 24 hours after FIFA officially suspended the T&TFA as a member of the world governing body FIFA with immediate effect and until further notice.

The ruling means that T&T cannot participate in any FIFA tournaments, events or programme anywhere in the world until the suspension is lifted.

T&T was looking forward to participating in next year's Gold Cup tournament in the United States and the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in March 2021.

The ruling follows a decision by the former TTFA executive to challenge in court, FIFA’s right to appoint a Normalisation Committee to manage the affairs of football in T&T.

Joseph-Warrick, who was elected as WoLF president in April 2019 on a two-year term, was the lone woman on the United TTFA slate that contested the TTFA November 24, 2019 elections to form the executive and serve alongside former president William Wallace and vice presidents — Clynt Taylor and Joseph Sam Phillips.

Joseph-Warrick's resignation letter reads:

Dear Gentlemen,

"I wish to advise of my Resignation from The United TTFA, Trinidad and Tobago Women's League Football (TT WoLF) and my Elected post of 2nd Vice President of the TTFA.

Today I look back to almost two(2) years ago, when I became a TTFA Board member and decided to fight for Accountability, Honesty and Good Governance, to fight for our young women who were always a footnote, to fight for the development of football.

That was against the previous administration that had sunk our football into depths of Despair.

We Won that fight.

Six months ago, a New Bigger battle emerged.

This time against FIFA, the rulers of World Football.

This was a fight for Principle, and Justice and I felt we were Well supported in our actions by the football lovers in Trinidad and Tobago.

Within recent times it has become clear to me, that we are also fighting against those that we represent; The Associations, The Clubs, The Teams, Supporters and Sadly....the Players.

In my Heart, I felt hurt by the actions of FIFA.....there was so much to do, but So little time given.

We were making Huge strides, and Yes we made some mistakes.

I believe that the end must justify the means and that our present course of actions against FIFA would not redound to the benefit of Trinidad and Tobago and to the dreams and aspirations of our present and future generations of footballers.

Having consulted with our membership, we took the decision to give up our principled struggle for the future of Trinidad and Tobago Football and moved for the withdrawal of court proceedings against FIFA.

How and why these papers were filed after the 3 pm deadline is beyond me, and I am saddened and disappointed at the turn of events.

Hopefully, this suspension will be short-lived as the membership, executive and Normalization Committee do what is beneficial for our future generations of players, clubs, coach and administrators.

As for me, I am Done."

Yours in Sport,
Susan Joseph-Warrick
2nd Vice President TTFA
President TT WoLF.
Vice President United TTFA.

The quartet was removed from office by FIFA on March 17 and FIFA -appointed a Normalisation Committee on March 27 to manage the sport which led them to mount a legal challenge of FIFA's decision at the Court for Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland in April, withdraw it in May as they could not pay the 40,000 Swiss francs (TT$276,000) in associated costs claiming institutional bias in favour of FIFA. The matter was then lodged in the T&T High Court and FIFA objected claiming the TTFA has breached its statutes.

FIFA had called on the TTFA to withdraw the matter from the High Court but although a decision was taken to do so late Tuesday night, the withdrawal did not come in time to meet FIFA’s ultimatum of September 23 and by the 3:0 pm (TT Time) set.

In Thursday’s letter of suspension signed by FIFA’s general secretary Fatma Samoura read in part:

“We inform you that, based on the decision taken by the Bureau of the FIFA Council on 24 September 2020, the T&T Football Association (TTFA) has been suspended with immediate effect and until further notice, in accordance with article 16 of the FIFA statutes.

The decision was as a result after the TTFA failed to meet Wednesday’s 3 pm deadline which set by FIFA on September 18, for the United TTFA team to withdraw their legal matter from the T&T High court.

However, the embattled Wallace and team withdrawal application was made and stamped at 15:23.57 (3:23 pm) on Wednesday which was after the deadline of 15:00 AST (21:00 CET) time as outlined in the FIFA letter.

Guardian Media Sports understands that while the group’s legal team filed an eight-page notice of the application to withdraw the case, in an attempt to beat FIFA’s revised ultimatum, the matter will not be actually be withdrawn until the application is dealt with by Justice Carol Gobin, who is presiding over the case. The matter is still awaiting a hearing date.

Following FIFA's decision Hadad wrote:

"Following today’s (Thursday) decision by FIFA to suspend the TTFA I want to reach out to the football family in Trinidad and Tobago;

These are extremely challenging times for everyone with the current pandemic, and my thoughts are with those impacted in our communities.

Unfortunately, the TTFA again finds itself in a very negative situation. The Normalisation Committee made every effort to prevent this suspension.

On several occasions, we managed to have deadlines extended, and we appealed to the few individuals from the previous regime to drop their legal action and do the right thing. Unfortunately, those few individuals have put their own interests before the TTFA’s. They knew very well this approach would have serious consequences for football in our country and yet they still pressed ahead with their own agenda. Their actions have had no regard for the coaches, the players and the fans in our country. Like the vast majority of stakeholders in our game, I am tired of the legal wrangling, the disputes and the constant focus on off-field problems in our football. The FIFA appointed Normalization Committee is the only way forward; it still the only recognized body by FIFA and the football family needs to work with us so we can put everything into getting this suspension lifted.it is incumbent on us to come together and fix the TTFA for the good of future generations."

WoLF head ready to push for equality
By Narissa Fraser (T&T Newsday)

SAYING that women’s football in this country has been treated like “the bastard child of the TTFA” (T&T Football Association), former women’s national team manager Kenrick Hoyte says there must be a push for greater equality in local football.

Hoyte is the interim president of the TT Women’s League Football (WoLF) after replacing Susan Joseph-Warrick who resigned from the position on September 25.

Hoyte was WoLF first vice-president under Warrick, who replaced Sharon O’Brien as president after the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 25, 2019.

Speaking with Newsday on Sunday afternoon, he said while the talent is “certainly there,” the resources for women’s football are significantly less than that for men.

“So now, we have to try to get the women to a level where – just like the men’s team – they have adequate sponsorship, government funding, that kind of thing, and a proper executive to run women’s football so there is consistency. We need a proper board structure.”

In 2014, the senior women’s national team was denied a spot in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a late goal by Ecuador. TT needed only one point to advance.

Hoyte said it seems that after that, “everything just stopped right there - no funding, no nothing. It just went right back (to the same thing).”

He added, “We need funding to have matches off World Cup season. You can’t just have players playing football for World Cup qualifiers if you really want to qualify.

“If you don’t keep them at that level and keep them occupied, you would expect too much - and we are not giving them much to work with. They have the ability but what are we doing for them?”

He said the disparity between the prize money for men’s competitions as opposed to women’s competitions is also troubling.

“We have to push for equality. It’s exactly that. Isn’t the price to go on a flight to play a match in another country the same for a woman and a man? How can we encourage these players when there is this lack of support?” Asked if he sees his new responsibilities as a challenge, he said, “If there’s no challenge, what are we in this for then?”

He said he is hoping FIFA lifts its suspension of the TTFA soon so “the girls can get to play again and get to play in the qualifiers next year.” No official date has been set for this year’s AGM yet, at which a new, official executive will be elected.

WoLF head 'extremely happy' as FIFA suspension lifted
By Narissa Fraser (T&T Newsday)

INTERIM president of the T&T Women’s League Football (WoLF) Kenrick Hoyte says he is "extremely happy" FIFA has lifted its suspension of the T&T Football Association (TTFA). Now, he said, plans can soon be underway for training to resume ahead of the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA Women's Under-17 World Cup in India, and the Under-20 edition in Costa Rica.

FIFA announced the lifting of the suspension in a media release on Thursday. The TTFA was banned on September 24 as its ousted executive refused to drop ongoing court matters against the world-governing body of football.

Hoyte, also a former women’s national team manager, said the women's teams last trained before the covid19 pandemic reached T&T.

"Remember, we didn't have any league this year. So they really need to get themselves back into preparatory mode.

"Now that the news (of the lifting) came out, we are in contact with the other groups in the TTFA and we are going to start liaising with the coaches of the national teams to start getting them back out to training."

He said the WoLF executive will officially meet next Wednesday to discuss the way forward.

"So yes, we are back on track now and the girls will be happy. We already have our season carded to start in March of next year and we are now doing the calendar events. So now that we have that sorted out, we will get the 2021 calendar from FIFA so we can start planning."

Ascension signs $200,000 agreement with Women's Football.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

This year's Women's Football League (WoLF) will be called the TT WoLF Ascension League, following the confirmation of a $200,000 sponsorship deal from Ascension League owner Richard Ferguson on Saturday during a virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The agreement confirms the widening interest in women's football in the country by football's world governing body FIFA, the Robert Hadad-led Normalisation Committee, women's football membership and now corporate T&T.

Christine Rose, the treasurer of WoLF told Guardian Media Sports on Sunday that the sponsorship will ensure a 100-per cent increase in this year's prize structure, and it will also help to off-set expenses for team travel, refreshment for teams during training and matches, and for fees for referees and other officials.

Only recently Hadad said he was told by the FIFA, to place more emphasis on women's football. The NC acted by summoning the women's football director Jinelle James to a meeting to start charting a road forward for the sport.

Since that, an invitation went out to fill the position of women's senior team coach which has so far attracted over 100 application from local and foreign coaches.

The women's football executive of Women's League Football (WoLF) is set to meet with James and the members of the normalisation committee soon to decide on the way forward for the sport.

However, it is unsure when there will be competition due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. "At this point in time, we are adhering to the COVID-19 protocols. The amount of cases in T&T has been on the rise and therefore we just have to wait on when the Ministry of Health gives the go-ahead," Rose explained.

She dismissed claims that other sports have been submitting creative initiatives to ensure that there is action this year and they can do the same, saying the real issue is that football is a contact sport and players are at a higher risk of contracting the virus.

Due to the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, Rose said no decision has been made on a tentative starting date for the League, neither was there any consideration on a structure for the women's tournament, noting: "We are not sure if when we get the opportunity to play if we will run two divisions or one."

The Queen's Park player noted that (WoLF) was able to finally clear a debt that affected women's football since 2018, courtesy donations from corporate T&T last year.

The league will feature two divisions and there would be one round of games with the following Super League teams - Club Sando, St Augustine FC, Trincity, Nationals, QPCC, Police FC, Defense Force, UTT, Jewels FC and Tobago Chicas FC.

The fits division will comprise - St Augustine Juniors, Central Women, Malvern, Diego Martin, UWI, Kamillionare and Legion

Keiron Edwards, the tournament director of the Ascension Football League said: "This partnership with TTWolf will send a strong message that the women in football are not to be treated differently to their male counterparts. The data collected from the previous World Cup has shown that there has been a high attendance and viewership around the world. Because we know that women's football is just as important as men's football, we at Ascension through this partnership hope that we can help build a strong platform that can encourage young women to look at football as a meaningful career in the near future."

Meanwhile, at Saturday's AGM the clubs all accepted the 2019 audited financials that were presented to the membership. The election of officers that was scheduled for December will now take place in March. The term of office is two years.

Susan Joseph-Warrick, who was elected in April 2019 at WoLF president and then as the second vice president of the TTFA in November, resigned as president of WoLF and the TTFA, after FIFA suspended T&T from all forms of football for failing to comply with an order to withdraw all legal matters in the T&T courts which resulted from FIFA's decision to remove the TTFA executive led by William Wallace on March 17, 2020.

WoLF coaches upset over assistant coaches' selection.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

There are rising concerns by coaches of teams in the Women's Football League (WoLF) that a fair chance was not given to them to apply for the assistant coaching positions of the country's women's national team.

WoLF interim president Kenrick Hoyte said he intends to ask questions about the selection process soon, once he gets answers to their concerns.

Following the appointment of Welshman James Thomas as the senior women's coach in April, the local coaches were sharpening up their chops for an assistant coaching position, as it was communicated that the assistant positions would have been from among the local coaches.

As far as Hoyte is concerned, WoLF coaches must have been considered for the positions as it is their players that make up the national teams.

Hoyte said he has been bombarded by calls from coaches from his League (WoLF), to find out why they were not even given an opportunity to apply for a job, and instead were totally overlooked.

"We have coaches from teams in the League attending coaching courses and now feel they are doing them in vain. If they are selecting coaches then they must have some kind of transparency in the process and at least extend invitations to all coaches, or at least inform the coaches of the appointments," Hoyte explained.

"We did not even know that the assistant coaches were chosen, we just heard it by the way," he added.

Guardian Media Sports was told that Richard Hood, the man who took the country's Under-20 women's team to the quarterfinal of the CONCACAF Women's Championship in the Dominican Republic in 2020, was appointed in one of the two assistant coaching positions.

The other is Dernelle Mascall, a former national player who has, like many before her, joined the family of coaches. Kelvin Jack is the goalkeeper coach for the team.

On Sunday, Hood confirmed his appointment as an assistant coach and appeared surprised to learn about the concerns that were raised.

Director of Women's football Jinelle James could not be contacted for comment as calls to her phone went unanswered.

Hoyte told Guardian Media Sports further that as far as he is concerned, all the coaches from the WoLF should have at least been given the opportunity to apply for the job, saying it doesn't matter if they were not chosen but they should have been given a chance.

Ex-T&T Women’s League Football official Jamiliya Muhammad passes away.
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday).

JAMILYA Muhammad, former general secretary of the TT WoLF (Trinidad and Tobago Women’s League Football), died on Monday morning, after ailing for some time.

According to a post on its Facebook page, the TT Football Association (TTFA) wrote, “Jamilya will be greatly missed but her warmth, kindness and gentle spirit will be remembered forever.”

The TT WoLF, also on its Facebook page, mentioned, “She worked countless hours and made many contributions to football throughout TT, and was instrumental in moving TT WoLF forward in numerous ways.”

This news has come at a tough time for the TT WoLF fraternity, as former secretary Claire George died of cancer in March, while former president Susan Joseph-Warrick suffered a stroke in April.

Muhammad, who graduated with a diploma in sports management from the UWI/FIFA/CIES programme, was a member of the TT Fire Service. She also served as a TTFA volunteer and a member of the Chips Sports and Cultural Club and Royalty Basketball Academy.

Former TT WoLF president Sharon O’Brien said on Monday, “Jamilya was like a sister to me. We played netball together and then were involved in football together. She was the general secretary when I was the president. It’s a great loss to the community, as a sister and a friend.”

Asked what memory of Muhammad stood out for her, O’Brien replied, “Her steadfast, strong personality. Her drive towards excellence, she was always a stickler for that. She was a person that, when you see her doing something, she wanted it at (its) best. That is how she was always.

“When we were liming, (she was) fun to be around. She always had a serious face, but it doesn’t tell of her demeanour.”

Joel Warrick, speaking on behalf of his wife Sharon, mentioned, “Jamilya, Mrs Warrick and Claire (George) were the heavyweights in the women's football. Claire would do the day-to-day running of the fixtures etcetera. Jamilya and Mrs Warrick would be doing all the behind-the-scenes things with sponsors, all the (business with the) TTFA.

“Mrs Warrick has been in contact with her, up till about two or three days ago. She was sounding in good spirits but, whatever ailment she had, it was like the writing was on the wall. She was hanging on.

“We're sorry that she had to go so soon,” he added. “Mrs Warrick was in tears when I told her. They were really close.”

Flanders new WoLF president
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

After two deaths and as many resignations, women’s football is back on a stable footing with the election of Vernetta Flanders as the new president of the T&T Women’s Football League (T&TWoLF).

Flanders who now holds the position of manageress of the country’s Under-17 girls team was elected unopposed, thereby replacing Susan Joseph-Warrick who resigned in 2020 from all football in T&T, inclusive of her position as second vice president of the T&T Football Association and president of the T&TWoLF.

Joseph-Warrick called an end to her involvement in local football in September 2020 when FIFA appeared to have won a battle through the local courts to have its Normalisation Committee replace the legitimately-elected football administration of which she was a member of the executive.

That year, FIFA also suspended T&T from all FIFA sanctioned football tournaments.

From 2020 to now women’s football endured a rigorous existence, not only because of Joseph-Warrick’s resignation but also due to the deaths of Claire Orr, the then assistant secretary of tournaments and competitions and Jameela Mohammed, the then general secretary of the organisation.

But at a virtual TTWoLF Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections on March 31, Flanders, who took over the position of general secretary following Mohammed’s untimely passing last year, was elected unopposed as president of the organisation as Hoyte opted not to contest the elections, and Marie Mouttet was chosen for the vacant assistant secretary of tournaments and competitions that was left by George who also died last year.

Also joining Flanders’ executive was Mohan Ronnie Persad who was uncontested for the public relations officer; Annleyes Collette- first vice president; Carel Percy- ordinary member; Keidi Brathwaite- ordinary member; Samantha Kissoon- assistant secretary operations; Patrice Superville- assistant secretary administration; and Christine Rose - who got the better of Ikenna Joseph for the position of treasurer six votes to four.

Meanwhile, Jenelle Nedd is the lone newcomer to the women’s football administration following her appointment as general secretary by Flanders soon after.

Flanders in an interview yesterday said her objective is to ensure that women’s football is restored to the position it once was and that there is a league this year. “ I have been involved in women’s football for a very long time so I am very much aware of the task ahead of me. I know it’s going to be an arduous task if I can get a bye-in by all the stakeholders.

I understand the task ahead of me as well so it’s just to promote or propel women’s football so that we can get back to where we once were.

The women’s team actually is the foundation for the national programme, there is where the players develop, this is where they’re supposed to come from, so if we do our jobs correctly and feed into the national programme then we can only strengthen the national team.”

According to Flanders: “ The first thing we want to do is get a league going before the year is out, but after that, WoLF has to have a bit more presence in the national landscape.

We’re trying to not make WoLF seasonal, WoLF shouldn’t exist only for a few months out of the year, but there should be stuff happening all-year round if we’re serious about development.”

The new women’s football boss said she also wants to add a few age-group categories to the WoLF competitions and tournaments this year.

Rangers edge Trincity Nationals in feisty Women’s Ascension opener
By David Scarlett (T&T Newsday)

TERMINIX La Horquetta Rangers kicked off the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s League Football (TTWOLF) Ascension Tournament in dramatic fashion as they netted a late winner to overcome Trincity Nationals 2-1 at Phase 2 La Horquetta Recreation Ground on Sunday.

Both teams battled on a soggy pitch due to the torrential rain that plagued the evening’s proceedings. However, Rangers began on the front foot and enjoyed the majority of possession as well as chances created. Their early dominance was rewarded in the 12th minute when Alexcia Ali pounced on a ball parried by goalkeeper Nicole Mitchell-Thomas, and the Rangers number 12 calmly tapped home from six yards out.

After the half-time break, the pendulum swung in Trincity’s favour as they conducted most of the play.

Felicia King brought the Nationals back on level terms with a well-struck free-kick from the top of the penalty area in the 60th minute.

But with the help of the loud and zesty support of the home crowd, Rangers found the winning goal nine minutes from the final whistle through Sharain Cummings’ clinical volley from a cross delivered from the right flank. The second-half substitute escaped her marker to find open space near the penalty mark and smartly rifled the ball into the back of the net.

The hosts strongly saw the game out and ensured that they began their season with all three points. In his post-match interview with Newsday, Rangers coach Dale Quamina expressed his delight with his team’s opening day victory but admitted that there is still work to be done.

He said, “We can always improve. Today, the conditions were not the best for both teams and I think we can both be better.

“However, the game was entertaining for the crowd; it was quite a big crowd for a women’s game, which was good to see… and things can only progress from here.”

When asked about his team’s dip in quality in the second half, Quamina claimed, “The ground in the first half was a bit lighter (than in the second half) and the girls had to adapt to the difficult conditions after the break. But they showed their grit and determination to drag through and get over the line.”

Quamina then praised the scorer of his team’s first goal, Alexcia Ali, but believes that there is more that needs to be added to her game. “I think she needs to work on her fitness”, he said, “fitness in the women’s game is very crucial.”

“Our ladies in this part of the world struggle with fitness and that is one of the main things that we are trying to work on. We are also developing them to play the La Horquetta way and we are looking forward to how things progress as we go along.”

The Rangers coach also expressed that his team doesn’t feel any pressure to win as tournament hosts but racking up victories will be difficult as there are many quality teams in the competition that wants to win as much as they do.

The game between Defence Force and Police, initially carded to be the tournament’s opening fixture, was abandoned after half an hour due to lightning and heavy rainfall. It was then regarded as an exhibition match. The official Battle of the Forces will be replayed at a later date to be determined.

Cornwall scored a double in Rangers’ 3-1 win
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

The pair of J’eleisha Alexander and Jalia Martin scored two goals each as Tobago Chica trounced Jewels FC 4-0 to maintain their 100 percent winning record in the Tobago Conference of the revamped cash-infused Ascension T&T Women’s League Football Ascension Tournament on Sunday.

Alexander opened the scoring at the Plymouth Recreation Ground, Plymouth in the 20th minute and Martin made it 2-0 four minutes later for a comfortable half-time advantage.

Martin was first to complete her double in the 64th minute while Alexander did likewise in the 84th minute to secure their third win from as many matches in the three-team table for a maximum of nine points and three matches left to play.

With the loss, Jewels FC remained second with three points from as many matches, while cellar-placed Black Panthers are without a point.

In the four-club Northern Conference, Queen’s Park Cricket Club romped to a 6-1 victory over Diego Martin Central at Patna/River Estate Ground, Patna, Diego Martin for their second win in three matches.

Leading the way for the Parkites was Jessica Harrigan with two goals while Ashlee Alonzo, Brittany Mahabir, Jewel Blackwell, and Orielle Martin chipped in with one each for the winners who led 3-0 at the half-time interval while Diego Martin Central got a lone second-half item from Akilah Crawford.

The victory improved QPCC women to six points from three matches at the top of the four-club table, three points ahead of Diego Martin Central and Defence Force, who have one and two matches in hand, while North Coast is without a point after two matches.

In the South/Central Conference, front-runners, Club Sando leap-frogged St Augustine FC to the top spot after a 1-0 win in their top-of-the-table clash courtesy of a strike from Kayla Taylor at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium Training Field, Marabella.

The win lifted Club Sando to seven points from three matches, one more than St Augustine while UTT Patriots (one point), and Kamilllionare FC (without a point), saw their match at UTT Ground, San Fernando postponed.

At the end of the four conferences’ respective two rounds of round-robin matches, the top two clubs from each conference will advance to the national quarterfinal playoffs, then to the semifinals and final.

The winners of the tournament will pocket $20,000 while the second-place finisher gets $15,000 and the third spot, $10,000.

UTT Patriots near playoffs in Ascension WoLF tourney...QPCC drubs D/Martin Central 17-0
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Shenelle Jordan scored a hattrick to lead the University of T&T (UTT) Patriots to an 8-0 demolition of Kamillionare in their must-win Southern/Central Conference clash of the Ascension T&T Women’s League Football (WoLF) Tournament at UTT Grounds, San Fernando on Sunday.

Jordan got her goals in the 31st, 39th and 75th minutes for UTT Patriots while Jaydime Mohammed added a double, in the 16th and 56th and the trio of Jasandra Joseph (37th), Avanelle Loraine (61st) and Tyrese Cooper (80th) chipped in with one each.

The win lifted UTT Patriots to 13 points from eight matches in the second place, and one match left to play against the same winless Kamillionare with a win cementing the second spot behind Club Sando and passage to the national quarterfinal playoffs.

Third-placed St Augustine, with 12 points from eight matches, was trailing leader Club Sando 1-0 midway in the first half of their final league when bad weather forced the match to be halted.

In the Northern Conference at St Mary's College Ground, Serpentine Road, St Clair, Queen's Park trounced Diego Martin Central 17-0 with Ashlee Alonzo scoring a beaver trick in the 19th, 43rd, 59th and 90th minutes while Kachelle Clarke (9th, 23rd, 41st), Jessica Harragin (26th, 44th, 49th) and Orielle Martin (36th, 57th, 68th) all got hattricks.

The Parkites also got a pair of goals from Britany Mahabir in the 73rd and 78th minute while Hannah Vieira (71st), and Emily Nanton (93rd) scored one each against Diego Martin Central.

The Parkites despite the lopsided scoreline and wasted chances were denied the chance to add to their tally after the referee Nathalya Williams was forced to call off the contest four minutes into added-on time when Diego Martin was reduced to six players, with no fewer than four players sighting injury as reasons for not continuing.

The win saw Queen's Park complete their nine-match campaign with 19 points from nine matches, six behind Defence Force who won by default from North Coast.

The Army/Coast-Guard combination women had earlier in the week outgunned QPCC 4-2 led by a treble from Shanice Pierre, and one from Kamile De Gale to cancel out Alonzo's double.

In the Tobago Conference, Jewels defeated Black Panthers 4-0 at Plymouth Recreation Ground, Plymouth with Celine Loraine scoring twice, and one each from Aaliyah Alvarez, and Crystal Toney to end with ten points from six matches, six behind group winner Tobago Chicas.

Police and LA Rangers have already secured the two quarterfinal spots from the Eastern Conference with 15 and 12 points respectively.

At the end of the four conferences, the top two teams will advance to the national “Big-Eight” playoffs from which the eventual tournament winners will pocket $20,000 while the second-place finisher gets $15,000 and the third spot, $10,000.

Jordan fires UTT Patriots to Ascension WoLF quarters
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Shenelle Jordan scored a pair of first-half goals to lead the University of T&T (UTT) Patriots past Kamillionare 5-1 for a second win against the same opponents inside a week to seal a quarterfinal spot from the South/Central Conference of the Ascension T&T Women’s League Football (WoLF) Tournament on Saturday.

Playing six days after beating the same Kamillionare 8-0 led by a hattrick from Jordan, the Patriots were stunned in the third minute when Jillanda Sandy put Kamillionare ahead at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

However, within seven minutes Jaydime Mohammed got the Patriots on level terms before Jordan netted in the 25th and 30th minutes for a 3-1 lead which they took into the half-time interval.

Six minutes into the second half, Jasandra Josep extended the Patriots’ lead to 4-1 while Tisha Belfon added a fifth item in the 67th to seal a fifth win from their nine round-robin matches on the four-team table to end with 16 points, nine behind table-toppers Club Sando, and more importantly, out of reach of St Augustine FC who has 12 points.

When quarterfinal matches kick off this weekend, Club Sando and Terminix LA Rangers will face off in the second match of a quarterfinal doubleheader on Saturday, September 10 at a venue to be determined after the original venue, the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella was deemed unsuitable for matches at present.

Rangers enter the last-eight after they ended in second spot in the Eastern Conference with 12 points from six matches, three behind Police FC who will do battle with the South/Central Conference runner-up, UTT Patriots in the first quarterfinal on September 10.

A quarterfinal double-header is also carded for the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago on Sunday, September 11, with Northern Conference duo, winner Defence Force and runner-up Queen’s Park Cricket Club playing away to Jewels and Tobago Chicas, respectively.

The semifinals will take at the Phase II La Horquetta Recreation Ground, La Horquetta on September 18 with the winner of the UTT Patriots/St Augustine FC and Police FC tie facing the victor of the Jewels/Defence Force quarterfinal from 4 pm followed by the Club Sando/Termini LA Rangers winner against the Tobago Chicas/QPCC winner, two hours later for a spot in the September 25 final at the same La Horquetta venue.

The eventual tournament winners will pocket $20,000 while the second-place finisher gets $15,000 and the third spot, $10,000.

If only WOLF would fix their internal matters and get more organised.

Season is wrapping up and it looks like the big 8 competition is gonna be controversial because of it's late ending and clashing with SSFL

This is what happens when the tournament took so long to begin and was sadly met with teams showing up short and crazy scorelines
Hopefully this doesn't go unnoticed and teams are pulled up for it

Two sent off in WoLF fracas...Rangers, Police, Defence Force advance to semis
T&T Express

Trinidad and Tobago’s national team goalkeeper Kimika Forbes and West Indies cricketer Britney Cooper were both sent off during an ill-tempered, Ascension-sponsored Women’s League Football (WoLF) quarter-final clash, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium last Saturday.

The knockout stage of the WoLF tourney got under way last weekend with Terminix La Horquetta Rangers, Police FC, Defence Force and QPCC all making their way into the semi-final phase.

Police edged UTT Patriots 1-0, via an 18th minute Anique Walker item. Defence Force was due to travel to Tobago, but won by walkover after Tobago’s Jewels withdrew from the competition. Meanwhile, the final quarter-final between QPCC and Tobago Chicas will be played this weekend.

Last weekend Rangers won 2-0 over South champions Club Sando, with strikers Laurelle Theodore and Adanya Phillip getting the goals. Theodore struck in the opening minute. The combination of a good through pass, poor defending, and her own pace, got Theodore to a position where she squeezed a low shot past goalkeeper Keri Myers.

After Forbes and Cooper had been ejected, Phillip provided Rangers with a second when finding the top of the net with a shot from outside the penalty area in the 85th minute.

But it was not for brilliant individual goals, but other reasons that the match stood out — mainly shoddy refereeing and a brawl between players. Referee Garfield Weekes did neither the league or himself proud. His questionable officiating and his lack of maintaining control contributed to tempers flaring and physical confrontations between opposing players.

Despite the theatrics, Forbes had two earlier incidents which could have seen her either sent off, or a penalty awarded against Rangers. Weekes failed to punish Forbes or her team when the goalkeeper completely missed the ball and handed Club Sando striker Khadidra Debesette a “clothes line” -- catching Debesette by the neck with an outstretched arm, while inside the penalty area.

Later, Weekes also let play continue when Forbes charged erratically out of the penalty area, again getting none of the ball when upending goal-bound Kelly-Ann Williams with a vicious tackle. It was at this point, following Weekes’ lack of decisive action, that events spiralled out of control.

A team official walked onto the playing field. Cooper protested about Forbes’ tackle and was also having a verbal spat with another player, Aaliyah Pascall, when Forbes approached with a confrontational posture. Cooper pushed Forbes. Weekes red-carded Cooper, who took it well, touching the referee gently on his chest before proceeding to make her way off the field.

Weekes then approached the penalty area and also issued a red card to Forbes. She did not take her expulsion as well and immediately took off running toward the half-line to engage Cooper in another brief physical confrontation, before team members from both clubs quickly separated the two women.

Alexander, Martin fire Tobago Chicas to WoLF semis
T&T Guardian

J’Eleisha Alexander and Talia Martin struck late in the second half to lead host Tobago Chicas FC to a 2-0 win over Queen’s Park Cricket Club in the lone remaining quarterfinal match of the T&T Women’s League Football (WoLF) Ascension Tournament at the Plymouth Recreation Ground, Plymouth, Tobago on Sunday.

With the win, Tobago Chicas set up a semifinal meeting with Terminix LA Rangers at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo from 4.30 pm on Wednesday, while Police FC and Defence Force face off in the second semifinal from 7 pm at the same venue with the winners to clash in the final at a date and venue to be decided.

The Parkites started the match in Tobago as favourites after a second-place finish in the four-team Northern Conference with six wins from their nine matches to end with 19 points, six adrift of table-toppers Defence Force and scorers of a league-high 58 goals scored led by the duo of Jessica Harragin and Ashlee Alonzo with 14 goals each, and ten from Orielle Martin.

However, at the end of the first 45 minutes, Tobago Chicas who topped the Tobago Conference with five wins from six matches, for 16 points, powered by Alexander with seven goals, and six from Martin managed to keep the visitors at bay.

And with the minutes ticking away it was Alexander who fired the home team ahead in the 70th minute, with Martin adding the insurance item, a minute from full-time.

The trio of Police FC, Terminix LA Rangers and Defence Force all booked their places in the semifinal with contrasting wins.

At the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Police FC got a lone strike from former national youth captain Anique Walker in the 18th minute to slip past a spirited University of T&T (UTT) Patriots while Rangers got a goal each from Laurelle Theodore and Adanya Phillip to beat Club Sando 2-0.

However, for the semifinals, Rangers will have to do without the services of national goalkeeper Kimika Forbes who was issued a straight red card by referee Garfield Weekes for unsportsmanlike behaviour along with Club Sando’s Britney Cooper

The Army/Coast-Guard combination women secured their spot in the final four after they were awarded a win by default against Jewels of Tobago after the latter opted out of the competition due to the unavailability of players because of their commitments with their respective teams in the Secondary Schools Football League. Admission to the double-header is $20.

The eventual tournament winners will pocket $20,000 while the second-place finisher gets $15,000 and the third spot, $10,000.

Rangers, Police clash for WoLF title.
By Walter Abiley (T&T Guardian).

Terminix La Horquetta Rangers will clash with Police FC for the Ascension-sponsored Women’s Football League title on Sunday at 4 pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain.

Both teams had contrasting journeys on the way to the final, with Police holding off arch-rival Defence Force 3-2 in the second match of a doubleheader at the Mucurapo venue on Wednesday, while Rangers needed kicks from the penalty spot to get past Tobago Chicas 5-4 in the other semifinal matchup which ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

In the first game, the Chicas’ Jeleisha Alexander cancelled out an earlier goal from Monisa Mejias in regulation time in a 1-1 tie that sent the teams to the penalty spot.

Mejias again led the scoring in the shoot-out with the first goal, while Adanna Phillips, Sonica Paul, Tsianne Fernandes and Natasha St Louis also converted in the win.

For the Chicas, it was Talia Martin, NJemeile Charles, Jeleisha Alexander and Tsianne Leander who found the nets for the Tobago team.

In the other game, Cherelle Amendes scored a brace in the ninth and 25th minutes, while former national standout Anikke Collins added a third in the 68th minute for the Policewomen to seal their entry into the final.

For Defence Force, Tamika Isaac and Aaliyah Prince were the scorers.

The final promises to be a mouth-watering affair with Rangers going after their first-ever women’s title as a new team. Entry for the match will be $20.

Kimika Storm...Debate over keeper’s eligibility for Big 8 final
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)

THERE is debate over whether Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Kimika Forbes will be allowed to take the field for today’s Ascension-sponsored Big 8 tournament which will be played at the Diego Martin Regional Complex, from 4 p.m.

Police Football Club will meet Terminix La Horquetta Rangers in an all-Eastern Conference final. The final will feature several players who have worn Trinidad and Tobago national team colours, among them goalkeeper Tenesha Palmer, Anastasia Prescott, Rhea Belgrave, Jemila Mathlin and Tasha St Louis-Joseph for Police. Star-studded Rangers also have Laurelle Theodore, Afiya Cornwall, goalkeeper Nicolette Craig, solid defender Annalis Cummings, Sharain Cummings, Shenieka Paul and Natasha St Louis.

Forbes, a member of the sponsor’s team, Rangers, was red-carded following an incident and given a two-match suspension by the TTFA’s disciplinary committee, thus ruling her out of today’s final. However, Rangers protested Forbes’ ineligibility to play today’s match, arguing that Forbes had served what they considered to be a one-match ban during Wednesday’s semi-final round.

Referee Garfield Weekes had issued red cards to both Club Sando’s Britney Cooper and Forbes during the Big 8 quarter-final. Both women had a physical confrontation. Generally, a red card results in an automatic suspension of one to three games and for violent conduct, the punishment is normally a three-match ban.

The Sunday Express learned that a TTFA disciplinary committee met yesterday morning and handed Forbes a two-match ban, ruling her out of the final. The Express also learned that the decision was subsequently changed.

Yesterday, Ascension Tournament director Kieron Edwards confirmed that Forbes had been given the go-ahead to play today.

“Yes, she is,” Edwards stated. “She served her ban on Wednesday.”

Edwards acknowledged that there was a disciplinary committee meeting yesterday, but insists that a one-day suspension was already served.

“They met but the suspension was already served,” Edwards said. “There is not an issue for the Disciplinary Committee to treat with. She had already served the ban. You can’t serve a ban, and after the ban is served, they say they will give you an extra game.”

Asked specifically who made the decision to have Forbes serve a one-match ban instead of two, Edwards replied: “The board, the executive made the decision,” Edwards confirmed.

Asked specifically if the WoLF board had made the decision, Edwards stated: “That is where we get our information.”

Vernetta Flanders, former manager of the T&T Under-17 girls team, replaced Susan Joseph-Warrick as WoLF president in April 2022. Expressing surprise that the matter had reached the press, Flanders told Sunday Express that up to that point, WoLF had not yet made a decision.

“For the record, no official communication between the executive and the TTFA’s disciplinary committee was made and we are currently, the (WoLF) executive, still deciding our way forward with the situation,” Flanders stated.

“The letter to Kimika was sent after she would have served her first ban and what is being debated by the (WoLF) executive is whether it was valid, since it was sent after the game.

Flanders argued that with Terminix La Horquetta Rangers having appealed Forbes’ red card to allow her to play in Wednesday’s semi-final against Tobago Chicas, it would have been expected that the TTFA’s disciplinary committee would have acted swiftly.

“The appeal was made for the purpose of that game against Tobago (Chicas). Once she did not play the game, is that decision still valid. That is the issue before the executive at this point in time,” Flanders stated. “It is not an issue with the decision that was made by the disciplinary committee. It’s more an ethical decision.”

Two sent off in WoLF fracas...Rangers, Police, Defence Force advance to semis
T&T Express

...

Under what rational disciplinary assessment would that conduct merit sitting out ONE match?

WoLF's new format and changes will guarantee 2023 season.
By Walter Abiley (T&T Guardian).

Women's football in T&T will take place this year as planned, but only after a few key changes are made to fall in line with T&T Football Association (TTFA) requirements.

Vanetta Flanders, president of the Women's Football League (WoLF) told Guardian Media Sports on Wednesday that the challenge of having the senior women's football league stopped because of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) season every year is being dealt with finally.

She explained that due to the large number of players who represent clubs in WoLF, the league can only take place for a few months otherwise the league has to give way to allow the players who attend to school to play in the SSFL competition.

Flanders said there are several issues, social and otherwise, that have been preventing female players from making the transition from the schools to the clubs.

She pointed out that: "There are issues with their peers, there are issues where players may have to go out and get a job to help out in the households etc that's posing challenges."

However, she promised that WoLF will work around these issues to minimise the impact on all parties involved.

Flanders, who was elected unopposed last year to take over from Susan Joseph-Warrick, who had resigned back in 2020, said they have several options to solve the problem, but they first want to take them to the membership, the clubs, and the executive before going public.

WoLF is set to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on May 29, following which a determination will be made on whether to start the league a month after.

"The options we have are geared towards mitigating these challenges. We are trying to work around it and all I can say is that we will have to change the format of the league," Flanders explained.

She added: "These changes will, in fact, auger well for women's football in the country."

Last year the Women's Football League was sponsored by Ascension and produced an exciting final affair between Police and La Horquetta Rangers at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain, which the Lawwomen won to lift the title.

This year, women's football got a major boost with a new TTFA Girls U-14 League that kicked off on March 5 among eight teams from Trinidad and four from the sister isle of Tobago.

The tournament is expected to be a major development programme.

Ali, Cornwall lead Club Sando to 12-0 WoLF win
By David Scarlett (T&T Newsday)

Club Sando women demolished league debutants Atlas Athletic International Academy 12-0 to stay perfect on matchday three of the TT Women’s League Football (TTWoLF), at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, on Saturday afternoon.

The victory followed a slender 1-0 result against fellow title favourites AC Port-of-Spain last weekend. Club Sando went into the matchday boasting a perfect record of two wins, three goals scored and no goals conceded.

At the final whistle in Marabella, they remained top of the standings with a massive goal-difference of +15 and are still yet to be breached defensively.

Last season’s standout player Alexcia Ali – who previously starred for La Horquetta Rangers – continued her fantastic scoring form for her new club with four goals – the perfect statement ahead of the upcoming Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup qualifiers.

Soca Princess and former SSFL star Afiyah Cornwall grabbed an impressive hat-trick to contest Ali for the most goals in the match, and 2010 Under-17 Women’s World Cup midfielder Khadidra Debesette also got her name on the scoresheet as the star-studded Club Sando dominated their opponents.

More goals from Jahra Thomas, Kelly-Ann Williams, Tayeann Wylie, along with an own-goal, led Club Sando to a comprehensive showing, and sent a message to the rest of the league that they are out to win the title.

AC Port-of-Spain rebounded in fine style to bully their foes from the east Trincity Nationals 6-1 at the Eddie Hart Recreation Ground, Tacarigua, on Saturday afternoon.

The women from the capital showed no mercy to a club which has shown great pedigree in previous seasons. Shakeema Forestine led the charge for POS with two goals. Ketara Munroe netted for Trincity Nationals, but Anique Walker, Naomi Guerra, Minty Cruickshank and Jada Cupid scored for Chris Bailey’s POS team as they cruised to a five-goal victory.

In other results, St Augustine/Cunupia United stormed past Police FC 8-1. Police, who were slaughtered 11-0 by Defence Force last weekend, are still searching for their first win of the season.

The final Trinidad match resulted in the other league debutants, Playfit Football Academy, earning their maiden three points with a 4-2 win against QPCC at St Anthony’s College Ground on Sunday afternoon.

The match between the University of the West Indies (UWI) Women and Defence Force FC was postponed.

In Tobago, Combined Ballerz FC and Jewels SC played to a 0-0 stalemate. The other match in the conference between RSS Phoenix and Tobago Chicas ended in a forfeit as the former were unable to field a team to play. As a result, Tobago Chicas were awarded a 3-0 win and three points.

Club Sando Women claim Inter-Island title
T&T Express

TIGER TANKS Club Sando confirmed their dominance over AC Port of Spain women when defeating their arch-rivals 2-0 on Friday night at the Arima Velodrome to lift the Women’s League Football (WoLF) Inter-Island Cup.

Goals either side of half-time by striker Dennecia Prince (31’) and Afiyah Cornwall (71’) saw the Southern team complete the extended 2023 season unbeaten.

The Inter-Island Cup matches the champions and runners-ups of the Trinidad-based Claire George Conference of WoLF against the champions and runners-up of the Tobago-based Jamilya Muhammed Conference.

It was the second win for Club Sando over AC PoS in three meetings for the 2023 season, the first match ending in a draw. Club Sando finished as Trinidad champions with a comfortable 3-0 win over AC PoS late last year.

The Trinidad teams also dominated their Tobago opponents at the semi-final stage; AC PoS defeating Tobago champions Jewels 3-0 while Club Sando decimated the Tobago runners-up, Black Panthers, 7-0.

Among those who attended Friday’s final were national women’s coach Richard Hood, former TT Pro League CEO Julia Baptiste, as well as former national players Ricarda Nelson and Tasha St Louis.

What was on display was plenty enthusiasm if not very good football, with Club Sando often not being able to put together two good passes for long periods of the first half, but having plenty potency up front. To their credit, the finalists were not in season, the competition due to take place at the end of the league late last year.

Former youth striker Prince was good on the night, holding up the ball, and she opened the scoring with a powerful low shot from atop the penalty area, which slipped through the grasp of goalkeeper Mikael Yearwood. Renee Mike almost got Club Sando a second, a minute into first-half added-on time, her shot from outside the penalty area crashing onto the crossbar.

Also looking good for Club Sando was Khadidra Debesette, intercepting passes in central midfield and starting the counter-attack. However, playing in an unaccustomed more central role, skilful winger Alexcia Ali struggled on the sodden Velodrome turf and was eventually taken off.

It was only deep in the second have when Club Sando final killed off AC PoS. Prince again got the ball on top and shifted it wide to Cornwall, who did the rest, dribbling past several players and scoring with a low shot.

Left winger Shakeema Forestine was AC PoS’s biggest threat on the night, combining well with tall striker Bianca Mungalsingh. Forestine almost carved out an equaliser for AC PoS in the 34th minute, with her cross just flashing past the outstretched leg of Daneelyah Sandy on the far post.

With her team having fallen behind, Forestine cut inside in the 78th minute, her shot then going off the fingertips of goalkeeper Keri Myers, and onto the crossbar. AC PoS applied some late pressure and anxious moments in the Club Sando goalmouth, while at the same time always looking vulnerable to conceding a third goal themselves.
