Senior men to face New Zealand in Port of Spain on October 15th.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior National Men’s Team will face off with New Zealand’s Senior Team in a friendly international at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on October 15th

Local fans will have their first opportunity to see the ‘Warriors” in action up close since their promising run at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup and third place finish at the recent OSN Cup in Saudi Arabia.

New Zealand earned second place at the OSN Cup. In their first ever visit to this country, the "All Whites" will be preparing for its final World Cup qualification matches against the 4th place CONCACAF hexagonal participant and is keen to experience a CONCACAF environment.

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Stephen Hart meantime said that he was anticipating what would be his debut home match at the helm of the National Team since taking up the job in June.

“It’s a good international for us particularly as we are hoping to continue with the intentions of playing at least one international game per month,” Hart told TTFA Media.

“So far we have seen progress but it is important to have the group together at every affordable time and this game will provide us with another opportunity to work with the players and see them in a match situation against a respectable opponent in New Zealand which finished unbeaten at the 2010 World Cup Finals,” Hart added.

TTFA President Raymond Tim Kee disclosed that this is yet another collaborative effort between TTFA, Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, and SPORTT to help bring the country's most popular sport back to prominence.

“We are extremely pleased to announce that there will be an international friendly between our National Men’s Senior Team and New Zealand later this month.

Following discussions with the New Zealand FA last month, an agreement was reached and we are also wish to acknowledge the support of the Ministry of Sport and the Sportt Company for their commitment to the National Team’s program and this particular match on October 15th,” TTFA President Tim Kee stated earlier today.

“We are making progress in several areas of our development as was evident with the championship run of our Women’s Under 17 team in Haiti this week where they were crowned Caribbean champions and our Senior Men’s Team has also shown signs of advancement.

The Minister of Sport Mr Anil Roberts has recognized this and we are pleased with the support that he and his Ministry continue to offer the TTFA,” Tim Kee continued.

Further announcements will be made in due course relating to ticket prices, points of sale, as well as initiatives that will allow patrons attending the match to make contributions towards a fund to assist National Team defender Akeem Adams who is currently warded in ICU at the Varosmajori Heart Clinic in Hungary after suffering a heart attack last week and is awaiting a heart transplant.

Whilst in camp as their preparations for the World Cup playoffs continue, the All Whites will also play two matches against Mexican and US club opposition to allow coach Ricki Herbert one last chance to work through his on-field options for the penultimate international before November.

New Zealand will play Mexican Liga MX club Querétaro on October 9 and meet Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA three days later.

“The camp in Los Angeles could well replicate how the All Whites approach the challenge in November,” said NZF High Performance Director Fred de Jong.

“There’s still a lot of water to go under the bridge in terms of knowing who our opposition are and what unique logistical challenges they will present but basing the team in the US then flying in for that first leg is very much an option.”

“It’s similar to what the All Whites did in Dubai before the 2009 playoff against Bahrain so it’s a scenario the group has some familiarity with.

“The difference is the two club games, which will give Ricki the freedom to try a few things in a training match situation then make decisions on the make-up of his side to face Trinidad and Tobago.”

Would like to see Rundell Winchester given a chance and Jamal Jack. I have and affinity towards Tobago players but these two should make the grade. Still we need competition for left back places so hope Hart can sort that out or someone steps up

Since the Kiwis are preparing for a World Cup Qualifying play-off match, I'm sure part of the agreement is for us to field a competitive side.

The sentiment to contribute to Akeem's cause is the same, but my suggestion was more of a marketing pitch. Also, maybe it's me, but the way the quote is worded makes it appear like an afterthought. First impression is everything and it's a fickle public we are dealing with. I would inform the public from the onset that a percentage of each ticket sold would go towards Akeem's cause with the hope that they will be more inclined to attend the game.

I imagine that it was an after thought. TTFA have been negotiating this game since they went to Saudi. Now they have the game agreed, I guess they just wanted to do something. Their first aim will be to recover the costs of hosting the game, which is only right and proper. I agree that they could add $20 or so to the ticket price, but, again, they have to consider the effect of higher prices on the potential attendance. With respect, people will look at the cost to their pocket first before raising funds for Akeem. This way, hopefully, the price won't close out punters and once they arrive those that want to can donate.

There was talk of offering seats in a special section of the uncovered area at a higher price with the proceeds going to Akeem, but perhaps that wasn't practical.

I also know that TTFA are working on a bespoke fundraising idea that will probably be more effective.

Nelsen willing to help New Zealand if needed, but says team has plenty of quality
By Neil Davidson (Times Colonist)

Toronto FC manager Ryan Nelsen says he has not got a call from New Zealand football about helping his homeland's World Cup playoff push.

A story this week on Fairfax Media's website stuff.co.nz carried the headline: "Time for All Whites to send Ryan Nelsen SOS?"

"It is a longshot, given team politics and Toronto's own struggles, but (manager Ricki) Herbert and NZF should swallow their pride and send Nelsen an SOS," wrote Sam Worthington.

Nelsen, presumably, would help off the field.

The Toronto FC coach said he was unaware of the article.

"But I'm always there to help New Zealand if I can. Always help anybody," the former All Whites captain said Thursday. "But I know the coach really well. I know all the players really well. So they just need to pick up the phone if they ever need help.

"Not that they need it. They're a very good team. The players are good, the coach is good."

New Zealand, ranked 67th in the world, is slated to meet the fourth-best team from the final round of CONCACAF qualifying in a home-and-away playoff to see who advances to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The New Zealanders seem destined to meet either No. 21 Mexico or No. 35 Panama in November.

Before that, New Zealand will hold a week-long training camp before facing No. 85 Trinidad and Tobago on Oct. 15 in a friendly.

The All Whites will play Mexico's Queretaro and Major League Soccer's Chivas during the camp in Los Angeles.

The home leg of the intercontinental playoff is set for Nov. 20 in Wellington. The series will open in the CONCACAF country on Nov. 13 or 14.

Nelsen knows all about the playoff, having helped the All Whites beat Bahrain to get to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"It was a really hard game," he said, recalling the 35-degree heat and 100-per-cent humidity in Manama's National Stadium.

In 2009, New Zealand tied Bahrain 0-0 on the road and then won 1-0 at Wellington's Westpac Stadium.

Nelsen believes playing the return leg at home again is an advantage for New Zealand.

"Come November, it will be raining, windy and horrible," said Nelsen.

New Zealand wrapped up its Oceania campaign last month, finishing atop the standings with a 6-0-0 record against No. 95 New Caledonia, No. 146 Tahiti and No. 169 Solomon Islands.

In contrast, its CONCACAF opposition will be coming of a 10-game series against the likes of the U.S., Costa Rica, Honduras and Jamaica.

Just assembling the New Zealand team is difficult, Nelsen said, given they are spread around the globe.

"The one advantage we have is New Zealanders travel well," he said. "It doesn't affect us — time zones and big long flights."

That's because New Zealand athletes are used to long journeys.

"But when they (opposing teams) have to come to the bottom of the earth, it affects those people," he added.

tickets prices? and where can we buy?

Uncovered =  $75
Covered = $100
Special Section = $125. The patron gets a commemorative tee-shirt, and part of the proceeds of this ticket goes towards a fund for Akeem Adams.

Local football fans can support Akeem in T&T/New Zealand friendly
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

Trinidad and Tobago football fans will be able to donate towards the medical expenses of two-time former World Youth Cup defender Akeem Adams and support the “Soca Warriors” at the same time at the national senior football team’s upcoming friendly against New Zealand.
The Warriors will face New Zealand on Tuesday October 15 from 7.15 pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain. And Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) general secretary Sheldon Phillips said that commemorative Native Spirit tee shirts will be on sale at the game for $50 each with all proceeds going towards the “Heart of a Warrior” fund on Adams’ behalf.
The 22-year-old Adams, who joined Hungarian top flight club Ferencvarosi in August, is in ICU at the Varosmajori Heart Clinic in Budapest, Hungary after suffering a massive heart attack last week. He needs a heart transplant but doctors are waiting for him to stabilise before the operation.
Wired868 understands Adams is now conscious and able to communicate with his mother, Ancilla Adams, and brother, Akini Adams, who both joined him in Budapest on Sunday night at Ferencvarosi’s expense. Adams moved for the first time on Monday morning when he nodded to his mother and squeezed her hand.
Phillips said the TTFA will do its part to aid Adams’ recovery and urged local football fans to join in.
There will be a special commemorative section in the uncovered stands for $125 where supporters will receive a Native Spirit tee shirt. Elsewhere, tickets are available for $75 (uncovered) and $100 (covered).

$4m for Soca Warriors’ friendlies.
T&T Guardian Reports.

The Ministry of Sports is expected to bear the majority of a $4 million budget for the T&T Football Association’s (T&TFA) hosting of the Soca Warriors next two international friendly matches at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

The first will be October 15 against Oceania champions and 2014 FIFA World Cup hopefuls, New Zealand from 7.15 pm which will provide locals the opportunity to see the team in action for the first time since their quarterfinal run at this year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup and third place finish at the recent OSN Cup in Saudi Arabia.

It will also be the first match for T&T on home soil since a 2–0 loss to Peru in February earlier this year while its last outing at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, was 2–3 loss to Finland on January 22, 2012.

The second match is expected to be played between November 14 and 17 against a yet to be determined highly ranked opponent which according to T&T Football Federation President, Raymond Tim Kee, will no doubt attract a big crowd.

These revelations were made at a media conference held yesterday by the T&TFA’s executive headed by Tim Kee.

The federation intends to set up a Heart of a Warrior fund in support of national defender Akeem Adams, who is currently warded in ICU at the Varosmajori Heart Clinic in Budapest, Hungary, after he suffered a heart attack last week and is awaiting a heart transplant.

With regards to the upcoming internationals, Tim Kee said his federation had a very long meeting with the Ministry of Sports, then another with Caribbean Airlines Limited and both were positive towards support for the team. He is also awaiting what he expects to be three more positive responses from other corporate companies as the T&TFA continues its efforts to attract partners.

He added, “We have been getting positive responses, but I still get the sense that people are waiting to see how well we start to do as a business. My pattern is for us to lift the standard of the football from what we have been in the past to much better in the future and I have no doubt we will get people on board, because we have to remember that football is also a business like any other and it sells like any other product as well.”

Another positive outlook for the T&TFA stated Tim Kee was that President Anthony Carmona has promised to meet with him again to discuss ways in attract some corporate sponsors, after their first meeting was cut short by the Head of State’s attending a funeral.

The T&TFA boss also said that the current situation surrounding national defender Akeem Adams was a sad one which requires digging deeper into thought as local clubs and the federation need to enquire from overseas clubs what kind of care they have for players in their contracts if something like this is to happen again.

“We at the T&TFA must ensure that we have our legal teams examine all these aspects of players contracts, with the local clubs, the Pro League as well, because for Adams his days for football maybe over, and its now a question of what’s next for him.

Commenting on the budget for both matches, Sheldon Phillips, general secretary of the T&TFA and son of former T&TFA technical director and national goalkeeper Lincoln “Tiger” Phillips, noted that the overall cost inclusive of all expenses will be near $4 million, but at the same time he was very confident that the local federation will be able to take away some of the burden on the Ministry of Sports in funding the entire sum.

Phillips added: “We are looking at tying up some deals so that if we are able to get some support from Caribbean Airlines for example, it will take away a lot of the travelling cost on players from our team as well as the visiting teams.

“That is just one example and we are also working on a few others, so we may be able to cut it down a great deal.”

Phillips said ticket prices for the matches will be $75; $100 and $125, from which $50 will go towards the Heart of a Warriors fund.

Tickets will be sold at The Fan Club (Movie Town and Gulf City); More Vino’s and Law 5 Sports Bar & Lounge, Chaguanas and a number of soon to be announced locations.

Children Under-12 will be admitted to the matches free accompanied by their parents or adults.

Phillip added that very soon T-Shirts designed by Native Spirit with the special Heart of a Warrior fund and T&TFA logo will also go on sale at various venues across the country.

During the half-time interval of the T&T/New Zealand encounter, the Soca Princesses Under-17 team which edged host Haiti 1–0 in their Caribbean Football Union final on Sunday night will also be honoured along with the their Marlon Charles and the rest of the technical staff.

I like the idea of an double header, my only concern would probably be the pitch and the erratic rainy season we have been having.

Hart names T&T squad today
T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Stephen Hart is expected to announce his squad today for the friendly international against Oceania FIFA 2014 World Cup group winners New Zealand, which takes place from 7.15 p.m. next week Tuesday (October 15) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

New Zealand will play two matches in the United States prior to their arrival in T&T. Their squad is expected to include the likes of Blackburn Rovers midfielder Tim Payne, Burnley’s Cameron Howieson, West Ham United defender Winston Reid, Ipswich Town defender Tommy Smith and Leicester City forward Chris Wood as well as Stuttgart FC midfielder Marco Rojas. The All Whites will play Mexican club Queretaro and MLS club Chivas USA, before travelling to play T&T in a warm-up match prior to their World Cup 2014 playoff against the fourth-placed CONCACAF qualifier.

T&T midfielder Densill Theobald, one of the surviving members of the 2006 World Cup squad, had a chance to witness New Zealand in action in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last month. He expects the visitors to be formidable opponents on October 15.

“They will be coming here to get the most of the match as they prepare for the playoffs. It reminds me of our period in 2005 before we faced Bahrain. We didn’t have any warm-ups but our team was in top form after the win against Mexico. New Zealand will want to be on top of their game also,” Theobald said.

“Our team is preparing for the future and the coach is rotating his squad but at the same time I know he wants his best squad available and this will be a great opportunity for us to put on a good performance in front of the home fans. It’s been some time since we played a quality match at the National Stadium and in that sense I think we’re all expecting it to be a fascinating contest,” Theobald added.

New Zealand’s High Performance Director Fred de Jong said the showdown with T&T will be extremely beneficial.

“We’re pretty happy to that we can get this international fixture off the ground because in essence it mirrors our preparation for November should our opposition be Panama or Honduras.”

Can you guys confirm if WN and the giant flag crew will be present?

Marseille player in ‘All Whites’ squad.
T&T Express Reports.

New Zealand head coach Ricki Herbert  announced his squad yesterday for next Tuesday’s showdown with Trinidad and Tobago at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

Herbert has included uncapped Olympique de Marseille teenager Bill Tuiloma. The versatile former Birkenhead United and Waitakere United player--who has been turning out in the UEFA Youth League this season--has already represented New Zealand at U-17 and U-20 World Cups and may now force his way into the frame to help the All Whites reach the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“Bill is a talented young player we’ve been tracking for a while and we think the time is right to bring him into the environment and see if he can make another step up,” said Herbert. “We have almost a full week in camp which is more than we’ve had for a single international since probably the away leg against Bahrain. The tour gives us a real chance to work through options for November, try a few things away from the spotlight, then ramp things up for the match against Trinidad and Tobago.

“Who knows what will happen between now and November?  This group of players could be in contention for the intercontinental playoff, we have a few [players] out with injuries for this tour and it could be the same in a month. We’re missing a number of players but the upside is that we bring in a group of players desperate to pull on the shirt and help New Zealand get to a World Cup. They now have that chance.”

Scotland-based Rory Fallon, whose goal took the “All Whites” to South Africa, is back in the mix since last representing New Zealand in the Solomon Islands last year, while Auckland City custodian Tamati Williams earns a recall to the national team for the first time since 2004 when he was an unused substitute throughout an ill-fated Oceania Nations Cup campaign in Australia.

Chris Killen’s Achilles surgery rules him out of the October window and potentially beyond, but Shane Smeltz (hip), Chris Wood (hamstring), Marco Rojas (foot) and Tim Payne (ankle) are all expected to be fit again for the intercontinental playoff against Panama, Mexico, Honduras or Jamaica.

Following communication to New Zealand Football from FIFA, New Zealand Football has imposed a one-match ban on Ben Sigmund for his red card against UAE last month, and he has not been considered for inclusion in the squad for the T&T game.

Ipswich Town player Tommy Smith, St Johnstone forward Rory Rallon, West Ham United defender and New Zealand captain Winston Reid and Burnley midfielder Cam Howieson are all included in the squad for the October 15 showdown.

Title: Football against New Zealand, really?
Post by: Tallman on October 10, 2013, 05:29:29 AM
As far as I can recall, T&T has never played a football match against New Zealand. But not if one is to believe the ticker on a popular local TV station. According to the caption, it seems that we have played them so many times that coach Hart is “weary of New Zealand.”

Of course, since we are in a rebuilding phase, Hart is obviously wary of facing a strong New Zealand side.

So lunchtime yesterday I took a stroll from the office to Kenny's on Chacon Street. I requested to purchase a couple tickets for the Akeem Adam's section, in order to support this worthy cause. However, I asked the lady a question, "Where exactly in the stadium is the Akeem Adam's section? (covered?, uncovered?, if uncovered where exactly... half-way line?... will it be sectioned off?). Her terse response was, "I doh know. I just selling tickets." I also was under the impression from one of the reports on this site that these ticket holders would get a support jersey to wear. Maybe I'm wrong. But anyway can anyone answer my first question? By the way I bought the tickets nevertheless, I was just hoping that clearer information could be disseminated...

The special section is in uncovered. Not sure where.

There will be a special commemorative section for Adams in the uncovered stands for $125

T-shirts on sale separately. Regular uncovered is $75. The extra $50 going directly to the Akeem fund. I would hope the section is in the exact half line

Hyland, Boucaud eager to play.
T&T Express Reports.

Racing Genk midfielder Khaleem Hyland, who played alongside ailing T&T defender Akeem Adams at the 2009 FIFA Under 20 World Cup in Egypt, says the defender's situation has left him and his teammates with a lot to think about.

“It’s frightening to see what has happened to him. We’re all footballers and we are in the environment that he was in every day. I was happy to hear when he joined the European ranks as another player from Trinidad and Tobago but what has happened is very sad. We’re all hoping he pulls through.

As players and individual we are shocked but it’s a wake up call as well because you realise that one moment you can be up and about and next moment something like this can set you back,” Hyland said.

And England-born midfielder Andre Boucaud, scorer of  T&T’s third goal in the 3-1 win over Saudi Arabia last month, was upbeat ahead of Tuesday’s friendly international against New Zealand, eager to play again in front of the T&T fans.

Oceana FIFA 2014 World Cup group winners New Zealand is using the match against Trinidad and Tobago as warm-up for a November playoff in which they will tackle the fourth-placed CONCACAF qualifier for a spot in the 2014 Brazil World Cup. T&T play New Zealand from 7.15 p.m. on Tuesday at Hasely Crawford Stadium. Boucaud has appeared in national colours only once before at that venue in a 2006 World Cup qualifier against Mexico in 2004.

“I remember that game because it was my first game in Trinidad and I’ve been excited about playing here again. I think Tuesday’s is going to be pretty special and obviously all the guys are up for the game. We want to give the pubic a good match and hopefully everyone can join in the effort to support local football and also Akeem Adams and his family during these tough times,” Boucaud told TTFA Media.

Meanwhile, New Zealand are due in tomorrow night and will train from 7 p.m. on Monday at Hasely Crawford Stadium, an hour after T&T runs out at the match venue.

The “All Whites” are in camp in Los Angeles and will play against Los Angeles club Chivas USA on Sunday, before jetting off to Port of Spain later that night.

Tickets for Tuesday's match are available at all Kenny’s Sports Shops, More Vino Woodbrook and San Fernando; All Out Sports Bar, Queen's Park Oval; Law 5 Sports Bar and Ramsingh’s Sportworld in Chaguanas; The Fan Club Movietowne PoS and Gulf City, Tobago FA Office, Fairfield Complex in Scarborough.

Tickets are priced at $100 (Covered), $75 (uncovered) and $125 (Akeem Adams Section). The TTFA is also introducing a new “Warrior Posse" drinks and snacks inclusive stand, for which there are limited tickets available at $200.

Fans wanting to be part of the Warrior Posse can access tickets at All Out Sports Bar, Queen’s Park Oval Lollabee Cellular (West Mall) and Simply Runway (Grand Bazaar) or contact 688-9819 for Central.

Birthday boy David prays for friend’s recovery.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Soca Warriors defender Aubrey David celebrated his 23rd birthday yesterday, but his wishes had nothing to do with him. Instead the former national youth player offered prayers for his longtime teammate Akeem Adams of Hungarian club Ferencvarosi who continues to fight for his life after suffering a massive heart attack two weeks ago.

David of Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA was with the rest of the Soca Warriors at their live-in camp at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel where they are based ahead of Tuesday’s friendly International against New Zealand at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

The match is being fully supported by the Ministry of Sport and the Sportt Company and will also see contributions being made towards the “Heart of a Warrior” fund from the sale of specially priced $125 tickets. Adams suffered a massive heart attack on September 25 and has since been fitted with a mechanical heart and is awaiting a heart transplant.

He is in the ICU of Varosmajori Heart Clinic in Hungary, where he has so far undergone four surgeries, including the amputation of his lower left leg, after he developed necrosis in the limb due to difficulties with blood circulation in his extremities.

Speaking ahead of the team’s second afternoon training session in two days at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, David, who also represented Guyana in the past, said he was wishing every day that he will be able to see Adams again here in T&T. “Everyday I pray to the Almighty that he can cure Akeem and send him home to us again,” David said.

“My wish today was for him to be healed and that God continues to look over him and his family. My second wish is that the country shows support for the cause and rally behind the team for Tuesday’s match and the other matches to come.”

With regard to the team, David, who was born in Guyana but played at the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups alongside Adams for T&T said: “I think we’ve settled into a nice system under coach Stephen Hart and the players are very eager to play and represent the Red, White and Black.  “This is about us as a country wanting to turn things around.

We are working hard everyday, we are getting support from the Association but this thing needs the entire country behind it. “If you look at the countries who are succeeding on the international stage...it’s taking the efforts of a lot of partners in order for them to reach where they are,” David said.

For yesterday’s session, Hart who led the T&T team to a quarterfinal showing at the Concacaf Gold Cup earlier this year was expected to have his full complement of 22 players after the arrival of San Jose Earthquakes winger Cordell Cato and Vancouver Whitecaps defender Carlyle Mitchell, who joined the camp after taking part in their club’s US Major League Soccer wins on Wednesday night.

On Thursday, during an intense session at the same venue, Belgium-based defender Sheldon Bateau and un-capped Central FC, teenager, Rundell expressed their hope that Adams will overcome his situation and vowed to give their all for a win against the Kiwis in his honour.

The hard tackling Bateau, who played alongside Adams as members of the national Under-17 and Under-20 squads at two FIFA World Cups said he was happy to be wearing the national colours once more, especially in a match that means so much to him personally.

He said, “For me this match against New Zealand is much more than a friendly, and we have to give our all and win for our team-mate Akeem.”

Looking ahead to the match, the 22-year-old Bateau who joined the European club after playing locally for San Juan Jabloteh and then North East Stars and has made three appearances for the senior squad said he hopes that all of T&T comes out and show their support not just for the Soca Warriors, but more importantly for Adams and his family.

The New Zealand squad is expected to arrive in T&T tomorrow night and will train at the match venue on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s encounter which kicks off at 7.15 pm.

Huge Mexican interest in All Whites training match

nzfootball.co.nz (http://nzfootball.co.nz)

October 13, 2013

LOS ANGELES – The All Whites have drawn their second training match on tour with a goalless stalemate against Chivas USA as New Zealand prepare for their international with Trinidad and Tobago next week.

The match was played in scorching conditions at the home of the MLS franchise before a large gallery of interested Mexican media following their 2-1 win over Panama the night before.

All Whites coach Ricki Herbert, who viewed the qualifying match in live at the Estadio Azteca, was once again pleased with the application of his charges.

“It was good to take another step up today, this time against MLS opposition as we build up to the match with Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.”

“We wanted to use the exercise as an opportunity to try some tactical variations we might employ during the away leg in November,” said Herbert.

New Zealand once again deployed the defensive trio of captain Winston Reid, Andrew Durante and Tommy Smith, while Tamati Williams was given an opportunity between the posts with incumbent custodian Glen Moss rested with a foot injury.

“We had a few injuries today which provided an opportunity for others to stand up,” said Herbert.

Rory Fallon led the front line with Jeremy Brockie and Kosta Barbarouses flanking him and the front three linked well throughout the match.

Chivas USA squandered the opportunity to break the deadlock when they blasted a second half penalty over the bar, while Fallon went closest for the All Whites when his powerful header was well saved by the opposition ‘keeper.

The All Whites will then jet out for Port of Spain and the clash with the 85th ranked Soca Warriors in Port of Spain on October 15 with Herbert excited by the prospect.

“We’ve got a lot of respect for Trinidad and Tobago, we saw them in Saudi Arabia last month and they’re a very good side.  More importantly, it’s CONCACAF opposition on their home soil and we’ll be able to see how we go travelling in a couple days before the match.”

New Zealand here for showdown with T&T.
T&T Express Reports.

New Zealand’s national senior team footballers were scheduled to arrive in Trinidad and Tobago last night, from Houston, USA, for tomorrow’s friendly international against T&T at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

The All Whites drew their final training fixture before tomorrow’s encounter, playing to a 0-0 draw with American MLS club Chivas USA on Saturday.

According to New Zealand press officer Seamus Marten, the visitors are eagerly anticipating the showdown with the Soca Warriors, and are also aware of the significance of the game following Akeem Adams’ heart attack.

“We’re all set for our first trip to Trinidad and Tobago and the match itself has a lot of significance, not just for us in preparing for the World Cup play-off but also for Trinidad and Tobago and Akeem Adams. We were very sorry to hear of his circumstances,” Marten said.

New Zealand head coach Ricki Herbert added: “We’ve got a lot of respect for Trinidad and Tobago, we saw them in Saudi Arabia last month and they’re a very good side. More importantly, it’s CONCACAF opposition on their home soil, and we’ll be able to see how we go travelling in a couple days before the match.”

The 0-0 draw with Chivas was witnessed by a huge Mexican contingent, and there have been requests for media accreditation from Mexican journalists for tomorrow’s game, which kicks off at 7.15 p.m.

Herbert was at the Azteca on Friday night to witness Mexico’s 2-1 victory over Panama.

“[Mexico] are obviously a quality side and you could argue, player for player, they are still the best team in CONCACAF despite their recent run,” Herbert told the Herald on Sunday. “We already knew how hard it was going to be, but coming here you can see they take their support to another level. The volume of people, not just inside the ground–there were thousands more outside and all around the stadium–was incredible.”

New Zealand, the Oceania World Cup qualifying winners, will play the fourth-placed CONCACAF team in a home-and-away play-off. The winners will qualify for the 2014 World Cup Finals, in Brazil.

The New Zealand national team home kit is: white jersey, white shorts, white socks. The away kit is: black jersey, black shorts, black socks.

They play in an all-white strip rather than the traditional New Zealand black due to a former FIFA regulation that reserved black for referees. The silver fern, a symbol of New Zealand, appears on the national team’s kit.

The T&T team will have their final training session at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar this evening.

Before that, T&T head coach Stephen Hart will join Herbert for a press conference at the Trotter’s Sports Bar in Port of Spain at 12.30 this afternoon.

Hart described Saturday’s training session at Malabar as extremely intense as players tried to stake a claim for a spot in tomorrow’s starting eleven.

“The session was very competitive and it’s great for us. You can see the intensity and the willingness to work hard throughout which is what we want from the players. Despite this being a friendly, the players realise it’s an important preparation game for us because, again, we are building for the 2018 World Cup campaign,” Hart said.

Striker Willis Plaza, back home from a stint in Vietnam, is hoping to execute well again tomorrow, following his two lively performances against United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in Riyadh last month. Plaza scored with his first touch after coming off the bench against the UAE, helping T&T to recover from a 3-0 deficit before losing on penalties.

“It’s time again for us to show our business on the field. I believe this is a good team we have now. All the players are skillful, talented and working hard. I want to see us do well and I will try to do my part to help the team at every moment,” Plaza said.

“New Zealand, I think, will be a tough side because they want to win also, but we have to do it for our fans. I am sure they want to see us play good football and win the game on Tuesday.”

The T&T team trained yesterday at the Crawford Stadium.

Jones: Friendly a ‘big match’ for Warriors.
By Kern De Freitas (Express).

That’s how Trinidad and Tobago captain and striker Kenwyne Jones sees today’s encounter with New Zealand, which kicks off at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain at 7.15 p.m.

The “Soca Warriors” are playing their first home match since facing Peru in February--also the first local international for coach Stephen Hart, who assumed the role in June.

After their Gold Cup campaign (T&T reached as far as the quarter-finals) and an OSN Cup outing later (T&T finished third of four teams after beating hosts Saudi Arabia), the team will take the “Hasely Crawford” field looking to give their fans a reason to cheer.

Their other motivation is their tribute to ailing T&T defender Akeem Adams, who suffered a massive heart attack last month and subsequently had his lower left leg removed after suffering necrosis in the limb. (See Page 53)

Jones wants T&T to showcase their improvement in fortunes at home, after debt, a lack of finances and other off the field issues in the last few years threatened to derail national football.

“We’ve been longing for the opportunity to play before a decent crowd at home,” Jones told TTFA (T&T Football Association) Media, ”and especially after the way the team has been playing and showing improvement, we’ve been wanting to run out before the Trinidad and Tobago public.”

The dreadlocked Stoke City striker added: “Of course the game is special because of what took place with Akeem Adams, and the people want to play their part and will hopefully show up in their numbers to extend that support to Akeem and the national team.”

According to Jones, while New Zealand have their own ambitions in the match as they prepare for a World Cup qualification play-off against CONCACAF’s fourth-place team next month, T&T also have their uses for the match.

“The good thing is we had a good seven or eight days to prepare for the game and it helped the new faces that came in. Each day we got better in training and we’re looking to take that into the game.”

Coach Hart had few words on the match, but also a welcome selection headache.

“This is our first home game since February and my first home game with the team,” he said yesterday. “Preparations have gone extremely well. There is a good competition for places, I should say healthy competition for places. In general, the players have made this selection extremely difficult for me, which is a position every coach would like to be in, so I welcome it.”

T&T defender Radanfah Abu Bakr said the home players want to perform in solidarity for Adams.

“We’re hoping for the support of the Trinidad public; as the coach said we haven’t played at home for seven-eight games inclusive of the Gold Cup, so we’re looking forward to playing in front of our home fans and give a special performance, not only for Akeem, but for the public.”

The TTFA advised yesterday that advance tickets will be available only at the ticket office of the Crawford Stadium today, and that the ticket box office opens at 11 a.m.

Children under 12 will be permitted free admission if accompanied by a parent, while secondary school students in uniform can purchase a $50 ticket for the uncovered section. Gates open at five p.m.

“I support Akeem Adams” T-shirts will be on sale at the match venue.

New Zealand confident against ‘strong’ T&T team.
By Kern De Freitas

For New Zealand’s football team, today’s match against Trinidad and Tobago is more than a friendly.

The teams meet from 7.15 p.m. at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain with different purposes in mind. While the visitors are preparing for next month’s qualifying play-off against the fourth-placed CONCACAF team, which is yet to be confirmed, T&T have ailing fellow “Soca Warrior” Akeem Adams on the brain, as well as their quest to win over the local fans.

Those two factors should provide enough motivation for Stephen Hart’s men, and New Zealand coach, Ricki Herbert sees T&T as worthy opponents to give his team their last international test before their play-off.

“It’s a CONCACAF team, it’s a strong team, it’s a chance to travel and fly in a day before and get used to what’s going to happen somewhere in the November window,” Herbert told the media at a pre-match press conference, yesterday, at Trotters Sports Bar, Maraval Road, Port of Spain.

“We saw them playing in Saudi Arabia and they’re a very good side.”

The “All Whites” flew in on Sunday night from a training camp in Los Angeles, USA, for their first trip to the Caribbean, short of some players who either have club commitments or are on the injured list.

“The side will look a little bit different now than how it will look in November,” Herbert admitted, “but I think it gives us a chance to try.”

With a lot at stake, though, Herbert said, the New Zealanders will give their best against T&T.

“The CONCACAF group is very strong,” he acknowledged. “We knew last time we went on to Saudi Arabia, we were undefeated and we played the reigning champions. We’ve come here because we think it will be a tough game for us.

“We’re not looking for any favours tomorrow night (today), and we’ve got things to look at and try ourselves.”

SporTT, Ministry support today’s friendly.
T&T Express Reports.

The Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) issued a total of $870,750 to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA), last Thursday, thereby facilitating the staging of an international friendly between the senior men’s football team and their New Zealand counterparts.

The Ministry of Sport was also a key contributor, providing assistance with airfare and accommodation for the Kiwi and foreign-based national footballers. The T&T/New Zealand match will be played at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain today, and is expected to draw several thousand Soca Warriors fans. Kick-off time is 7.15 p.m.

The friendly also serves as a benefit for and honour to fallen national defender, Akeem Adams, who is battling for his life in Hungary following a massive heart attack and the partial amputation of his left leg. Proceeds from the gate receipts in the $125 Akeem Adams section and contributions to collection boxes on the day will be used to help the 22-year-old footballer.

According to Minister of Sport, Anil Roberts, the game is a significant opportunity for sports fans to contribute to the recovery of a national player who showed tremendous potential but had his playing days tragically cut short.

“It is at these times that the country needs to pull together and pray for the athlete’s full recovery. I understand that Akeem has awakened from his coma and is responding to the doctors and family around him. This is encouraging news and we will continue to do all we can to support him returning home.”

TTFA General Secretary, Sheldon Phillips expressed his gratitude to SporTT.

“The TTFA is truly grateful to SporTT’s contribution as the game would not have been possible without it.  We look forward to a continued partnership with the company and encourage all citizens to follow suit and lend as much as possible to both the Soca Warriors team and young Akeem.”

Warriors, Kiwis clash in friendly
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Two teams with two different agendas, a rebuilding T&T and World Cup contender New Zealand, will clash in an international friendly, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, from 7.15 pm tonight.

T&T, on a high after a third-placed finish at the OSN Cup in Saudi Arabia, last month, as well as a milestone quarterfinal end to the Concacaf Gold Cup, is expected to put on a strong performance against the Kiwis, which has held no secret of its intention of preparing for the fourth-placed finisher in the Concacaf confederation group in a two-match play-off for the 2014 Fifa World Cup.

Two debutants are in for T&T, Cordell Cato of San Jose Earthquakes and Central FC’s Rundel Winchester, while Hughtun Hector returns for the first time in several matches.

On the flip side, two key defenders, Joevin Jones and Daneil Cyrus, both of W Connection have been dropped for an apparent act of indiscipline, raising some concern for the T&T back-line, which has conceded four goals in the last two matches. Leading the Soca Warriors is a seemingly revived Kenwyne Jones, who has five goals in his last six appearances.

Yesterday, at a media briefing at Trotters Sports Bar and Grill, Maraval Road, the New Zealand team, represented by coach Ricki Herbert and skipper Winston Reid of England’s West Ham United echoed similar sentiments on what it aims to achieve with today’s tie, and it is not a draw.

Reid a 25-year-old defender, who plays regularly for West Ham, is among the top players to watch. In terms of goals, however, Rory Fallon a forward of Scottish club St Johnstone, leads the team with three goals in 14 internationals.

Herbert acknowledged the T&T’s rally of support for Akeem Adams, who recently awoke from anesthesia after the removal of the lower part of his left leg, in a procedure described by his doctors as “life-saving” due to poor circulation which resulted from a massive heart attack late last month.

Herbert said his team would aide in whatever way it can. And, as part of the effort, New Zealand’s players have agreed to sport t-shirts printed in support of Adams at a ceremony prior to kickoff.

Speaking on his Concacaf warm-up test today, however, the Kiwi coach said, “We do see Trinidad (and Tobago) as an extremely tough opponent”.

Herbert would have taken notes on the Warriors as New Zealand was also present at the OSN Cup, where it lost 2-0 in the final to the UAE. Tonight’s match will be broadcasted delayed on CNC3 tonight from 10 pm.

Yes peeps, we giving this thing a shot here trying to do a live "fan zone" type stream from the stadium..

If all goes well hopefully we can provide an alternative to the traditional heart attack radio commentary available online.

Have no idea how this will come off as neither myself or Andre have done this before so bear with us. We'll try our best, and this is just a start that we hope to improve on down the road on behalf of the SWO.

The link will be posted later as soon as it is up and running, stay tuned here for updates.

Yea we need more dynamism. I think Molino is wasted on the wing, should play inside behind the forwards. And we need a left back.   My cousin in England told me Dale Bennett says he is eligible to play for T & T. Dont know if there's any truth in it but someone should have a look @ him. Plays for Forrest Green, signed from Watford after a number of loans out. Or Gavin Hoyte if he shows interest

Nah man, yes, there could be more penetrating passes, but this is from where you start to build. Atop of that there easily 5-10 passes from the DMs to the AMs in the attacking third -- another plus. Something I have not seen us to do for a very long time is to play in "triangles" to maintain possession, saw quite a bit of this as well.

That said, NZ plan seems to be to play on the counter away from home, so we were not aggressively and consistently pressed. All in all, Hart keeping it on the up and up  :beermug:

Solid but not spectacular, as another posted posted, small increments of improvement, we looked assured passing the ball but most were safe passes, lateral or backward. Boucaud and Hyland is a solid midfield pair, they are shaping up to be SH's first choice pair in the middle both are good technically and capable defensively even though Hyland is subject to a concentration lapse or two every game.

In the back i found the only weak link to be Abu-Bakr who struggled in the air against the NZ 10 striker. The other 3 in the back were very good. I was impressed with Bateau. Hoyte and Mitchell are also proving to be first choice for SH in the back. Both have very good recovery speed.

Wingers Molino and Peltier, stayed on the touchlines making themselves available for the defense and the middle but my general issue with both wingers and the forward men were the general lack of movement, to many times the ball is in the back and the 4 forward men are standing stagnant. Plaza was a willing runner but in my opinion it was too predictable and it looks like SH pong in dem men head the value of keeping possession because they were hesitant to play a 50% forward ball unless it was speared down the wing. KJ ran hard but he was the person that should show for the ball while Plaza or the other wingers to get in behind. Didn't happen enough. What I also find is that teams who play with the two stock midfielders like T&T need wing backs to create the extra forward players to force the defense to shift and create the open spaces for other players. Most times both wing backs stayed at home. After tonight players like the excluded Jones will rue their professional choices as the role is tailor made for them to utilize their talents.

Hector looked good coming on, by far the best touch then Guerra who had a nice lil cameo and played the through ball that put in KJ but couldn't get his chip over the keeper. It was T&T's only clear cut chance for the game. Hector is a favourite of mine since his Connection days and I am sure SH will want him in the squad from now on and I also favour Guerra in the hole behind KJ simply because Guerra will always show for the ball from the midfield pair, and let KJ do the running behind the defense.

For me, the fact that i went the game anticipating a win and a good show is progress, for a long time i went to support but didn't expect much of a result given the past fortunes. Raised expectations indicates progress to me.

Stadium had about 14k in the stands, impressive for a friendly that's not a top 30 ranked team.

Boucaud and Hyland is a solid midfield pair, they are shaping up to be SH's first choice pair in the middle both are good technically and capable defensively even though Hyland is subject to a concentration lapse or two every game.
I also find that Hyland tends to pick up frequent yellow cards, mostly due to lazy tackling.

In the back i found the only weak link to be Abu-Bakr who struggled in the air against the NZ 10 striker. The other 3 in the back were very good. I was impressed with Bateau. Hoyte and Mitchell are also proving to be first choice for SH in the back. Both have very good recovery speed.
Bateau has to improve his concentration. For a time it looked like Cyrus and Mitchell would be the standard central back pair.

Our wingers still lack the ability to provide useful crosses on a consistent basis. SH stresses possession, but he has also stated publicly that he wants possession with penetration. During training, SH always encourages Joevin to get forward.

Hector looked good coming on, by far the best touch then Guerra who had a nice lil cameo and played the through ball that put in KJ but couldn't get his chip over the keeper. Guerra needs to be more assertive in his role.

I think it is definitely movement in the right direction as far as possession, but like everyone has been pointing out we must have penetration, everyone knows goals win games and the only way to score is to get into the opponent's half. Abu Bakr is the weakest link in the back as he is a little slower and has lapses in concentration. I hope that J.Jones and Cyrus get their act together as they can definitely help solidify the team. I don't know what Bateau natural position is but he looked very solid on the left, Hoyte is a beast on the right his recovery speed and runs up the flank if they can find him can be crucial. If we can figure out how to get the ball to him when he makes those runs from the back it can make a huge difference to our attacking play. If Bataeu can handle the left back position I would like to see J.Jones on the left wing and Molino move over to the Center with Hyland, Bochaud and Hector on the right wing, Peltier is inconsistent at times and I think Hector showed has a better first touch and distribution with the little time he had on the field. Plaza showed grit but he really wasn't able to get into the game, Guerra didn't have enough time to get into the game to show if he can truly step up and fill that roll just behind K.Jones.

Guys, hard luck with not getting the live feed up for the game on Tuesday..

Andre and I got to the stadium around 5:30, set up our "fan zone" and tested and everything was working perfectly. As soon as people start streaming into the stadium, the internet connection dropped to a trickle and left us hanging. We were only able to get out some pockets of audio commentary throughout the game.

At least now we have a better idea of what needs to be done and we'll try to put everything in place ahead of the next home game to avoid those issues.

Stay tuned!
