ICC suspends Shillingford for illegal bowling action

The ICC has suspended Shane Shillingford, the West Indies offspinner, from bowling in international cricket after his action was found illegal. His team-mate Marlon Samuels, who is a part-time offspinner, has been prohibited from bowling quicker deliveries in international cricket.

The pair were reported for suspect action on November 16, during the second Test against India in Mumbai. They underwent biomechanical analysis in Perth on November 29, before the start of the series against New Zealand.

Shillingford has taken six wickets at 42.66 in the first two Tests against New Zealand but will now not be available for the final match in Hamilton which starts on Thursday. Samuels has not bowled in the current series.

An ICC statement said that an independent biomechanical analysis had revealed that for both Shillingford's standard off-break delivery and his doosra, the amount of elbow extension in his bowling action exceeded the 15 degrees' level of tolerance permitted under the ICC regulations. Shillingford will remain suspended until he submits a fresh analysis that proves his action has been corrected.

Earlier this week, when asked about the pending report, West Indies coach Ottis Gibson said he was confident Shillingford would be cleared. "There are a few people around the world bowling with similar, if not worse actions, so I expect him to be cleared for sure."

Meanwhile, the analysis on Samuels' action revealed that the spinner's standard off-break delivery was legal but the quicker delivery exceeded the prescribed levels of tolerance.

If Samuels is reported for a suspect action in the next two years, the ICC will take note of it as a second report and the player will have to undergo a biomechanical analysis. If the analysis concludes that Samuels has an illegal action for any delivery, he will be banned from bowling in international cricket for a minimum period 12 months.

Shillingford had earlier been suspended from bowling in international cricket in December 2010, a month after being reported for a suspect bowling action on West Indies' tour of Sri Lanka. He underwent remedial action on his bowling and was cleared by the ICC in June 2011.

Bucknor calls Busta Cup bowler for throwing

West Indian Test umpire Steve Bucknor called a Windward Islands bowler for throwing in a Busta Cup match yesterday

Off-spinner Shane Shillingford was removed from the attack on the opening day of the Windwards' game against Leeward Islands at St George's, Grenada, on Thursday, after Bucknor called no-ball on three occasions because of the bowler "throwing".

Shillingford was called twice when Bucknor was standing at square leg. When he was switched to the same end at which Bucknor was standing, the veteran of 54 Tests and 80 one-day internationals called Shillingford again. Under Law 24 of the Laws of Cricket, the bowler had to be removed immediately from the attack for the remainder of the innings following his third transgression.

Shillingford bowled 3.3 overs, taking 1/15 (Alex Adams, clean bowled), before he was banished. In three previous Busta Cup matches this season he has taken 13 wickets at 24.53, with a best haul of 7/66 against Jamaica. This is the first time this season he has appeared in a match umpired by Bucknor.

At the end of the first day's play, the Leeward Islands were 266 for 8.

Cricket: Gibson backs suspended Shillingford

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has backed suspended spinner Shane Shillingford to bounce back after being banned over his bowling action.

Offspinner Shillingford was last night suspended by the International Cricket Council after having his action reported during a test against India last month.

He failed the biomechanical testing done in Perth under ICC auspices which allowed 15 degrees of tolerance in the bend of his bowling arm.

Allrounder Marlon Samuels, who also underwent testing in Perth en route to New Zealand, is allowed to continue bowling his offspinners, provided he doesn't deliver his quicker ball which was under scrutiny.

In Shillingford's case, it was his doosra delivery which the match officials in India didn't like and which failed the examination.

Last week Gibson was confident Shillingford would get the all-clear.

''Though I felt confident about the way the two players performed at the testing, the report did not come back in our favour," said Gibson.

"Shane is obviously gutted, but Marlon's role in the team, as I have said previously, is primarily as a batsman, so the impact on him is a little bit less."

Gibson said a plan would be worked through to have the pair fully cleared for bowling in the New Year.

The 30-year-old Dominican Shillingford has had a remarkable degree of success, taking 11 wickets in the two tests in India and has snared 65 wickets in 14 tests at 32.32 apiece.
Gibson believes both will bounce back.

''They are both tough characters and have had their share of ups and downs int eh game over the years," he said.

''We have no doubt that they will emerge emerge from this latest setback with the utmost confidence."

The West Indies have a readymade replacement for Shillingford for the third test against New Zealand, starting in Hamilton Thursday in Sunil Narine.
