By the time Argentina face Slovenia and Trinidad and Tobago in further warm-ups in early June, Sabella will have announced his 23-man World Cup squad. Argentina open their World Cup campaign against Bosnia on June 15 and also face Iran and Nigeria in Group F.

Folks, that is actually a team pool with plenty potential, with a nice balance of experience and youth. Where are we potentially lacking, in the context of this big South American trip requiring serious match fitness, a deep substitute bench and quality in all positions on the field, good first touch in merciless tight traffic and against world class opposition that has seen above average speed, dribbling skills from various opponents?
1. Midfield looks very solid. Note Keon Daniel probably kissed his chances good-bye .. a shame.
2. In Defense, Hoyte may be injured and is probably currently not match fit, unless he is getting regular reserve games. That would be a big loss. However the good news is that the versatile Cyrus could be moved there as he was perfectly used in the Gold Cup against El Salvador.
3. A bit more striking power pedigree is needed. However it is nice to see potency in the midfield wings like Peltier who is a striker in a sense. Doh forget we have speedy Cato too.
4. Goalkeeping needs more aerial power. Could Samuel be resurrected and tuned up by the goalkeeping coaches?

Got some dice-throws in this team - I'm convinced that Marshall will be in the squad given his performances in the past couple months, although maybe not starting given the quality we have back there. Likewise, I think the lack of exposure to Hart could undermine Power's chances of getting into teh squad. Jorsling might not play given the lack of play for Defence Force, which opens it up to probably the most competitive front-line in a while in terms of places. Any of Plaza, Joseph, Glen and Caesar could nick that, as well as R Winchester or some other youths if he felt like blooding them.

Representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) will head to Argentina on Friday for site visits and meetings, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s two June international matches against World Cup qualifiers.
T&T’s first friendly is June 4 in La Plata against World No.3 ranked Argentina, one of the favourites for the 2014 FIFA Brazil World Cup. The Soca Warriors then travel to Sao Paulo, Brazil, for a second match against top Asian team Iran on June 8.
A third match against Colombia has now been called off after the South Americans opted to play Senegal instead, as they prepare to face Ivory Coast in the World Cup. However, efforts are still being made to get a replacement for Colombia.
The TTFA will be represented on the pre-match tour by Kyle Aqui from its marketing division, and while in Argentina, the team of officials will visit the T&T team hotel and also the match venue. The Tourism Ministry will also shortly disclose plans for a travel package that will allow a limited number of fans to travel to Argentina to witness the match.
“This is going to be the first of a series of collaborations between the TTFA, the Ministry of tourism and the Sport Ministry,” stated Trinidad and Tobago Football Association secretary Sheldon Phillip yesterday.
“This is part of the “Beyond The Pitch Strategy” which is aimed at making the away matches an opportunity for trade and tourism. It is aimed at establishing Trinidad and Tobago as a destination point for tourism and business.”
Phillip stated as part of the package, the Tourism Ministry has been offered billboard promotions and advertising opportunities, before what is likely to be a television audience of some 10 million in Argentina, where the match will be televised. However, T&T’s second warm-up against Iran is a closed door affair that will not be televised.
While in Argentina, the TTFA/Tourism Ministry travelling party will also meet with match agent Hernan Tofoni of the World Eleven Agency, which is responsible for all of Argentina’s international matches. Tofoni confirmed that tickets for the T&T versus Argentina encounter are already on sale in Argentina and via the internet.
“We are expecting between 45-50,000 spectators at the stadium,” Tofoni told TTFA Media. “And the home fans will be very anxious and happy to see their top players together before they go to Brazil for the World Cup. All the preparation games are important for the head coach (Alejandro Sabella). The more games we play the more beneficial it will be to us.”
Argentina will face Slovenia in another friendly on June 7 before kicking off their World Cup campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 15. T&T head coach Stephen Hart will announce his roster for the two matches next month.

- Think this squad of 22 offers variety for back to back fixtures away. Each of the players in the front 4 can interchange. Bateau can also step into midfield and Cato and J. Jones can fill the full back spots.
- Choices were made based on particular players playing in front of Hart weekly which may give them the edge over Asia based players.
- Guerra had an inconsistent season but is a favorite of Hart and was the game changer in recent friendlies.
- S Winchester was W Connection's best player before he returned to Finland and R Winchester has returned to form at the right time. Winchester x 2 attributes make them a bit more of a difference maker than Caesar right now.

With National Senior Team head coach Stephen Hart set to announce his squad to face Argentina this week, the man in charge of the Senior “Soca Warriors” says this country has everything to gain from playing the two-time World Cup champions mere days before the 2014 World Cup kicks off in Brazil.
Hart has explored the various options with his pool of players in order to get the best available squad for the June 4th friendly at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires which will be followed by another friendly against World Cup finalists Iran in Sao Paolo on June 8th.
These outings are being supported by the Ministry of Sport and the Ministry of Tourism. T&T are also preparing for the Caribbean Cup and Gold Cup and Copa America Qualification later this year.
He described the matchup with Lionel Messi’s men as a “PhD in the approach to the game of football”.
“We know how much work it’s going to take for us as a nation to get to that standard of world football,” Hart said.
“You cannot run 10.3 in a hundred metres on one occasion and then expect on race day to suddenly run 9.6. And it is important that we play games like these for a number for reasons. We have nothing to lose. We are going to play two teams that will be thoroughly prepared for a World Cup, one of them arguably being a favourite to win it,” Hart added.
“Playing Argentina in Argentina is going to be a PhD in the approach to the game at that level.
“If the scoreline is not anything we’d want to see, I still don’t thing it’s a setback. Any realistic football fan will like to see a spirited performance from our team and that’s what will be pleasing for us.
We haven’t play an international game in eight months but matches like these you cannot stay away from. I prefer to look at the positive side of this. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Hart stated.
One player who will make his first entry in to the T&T squad is 23-year-old English-born defender Gavin Hoyte who is a product of the Arsenal academy. He is the younger brother of current senior team defender Justin Hoyte.
Hoyte (G) spent five years at Arsenal, coming up through the ranks and made one appearance for the first team. He also played for Watford, Brighton, Wimbledon and Lincoln City. He is currently attached to Dagenham and Redbridge. Hoyte also played for the England national Under 17, U-18, U-19 and U-20 teams.

Really and truly the only out and out strikers in the squad are Kenwyne and Plaza....to an extent Caesar as well. Rundell Winchester and Joseph play best on the wings. Jorsling is still class but has not played for the NT in a while and wasn't expected to be called. Belgrave has had a very good season with his best position being just off of the striker. He is good but not good enough to usurp our attacking midfielders like Molino, Joevin, Guerra, etc. Marcano has also been consistent but falls into the same category as Belgrave. The bulk of KB's goals came in the first 2-3 months of the season. Nothing really of note since then. I was surprised Shadon wasn't selected though.
The attacking players chosen were selected because they bring different qualities to the team I think. Plaza (easily 1 of top 3 players in the Pro League), Caesar (raw pace with great shot from either foot), Rundell (great pace, athleticism, height, eye for the spectacular), Joseph (rocket of a left foot, decent movement). Peltier and Molino are automatic picks

Currently making waves in the USL Pro League with Orlando City, midfielder Kevin Molino is counting down the days to this country’s friendly international against Argentina on June 4 in Buenos Aires.
Molino was in Stephen Hart’s 22-man squad named on Tuesday and expects the experience to be one in a lifetime.
“I was elated to find out I’ll be in the squad for the Argentina and Iran games. I’ve been working hard this season and been getting the results with my performances and seeing Orlando do well also,” Molino said.
“It’s going to be a massive challenge for us against Argentina but there is a lot that we can gain from playing Lionel Messi and his team and I’m sure everyone will be looking forward to it.”
English-born former Arsenal defender Gavin Hoyte also earned his first call up and is just as excited over the two matches.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to play for my country. I found out when the team’s head coach called me to tell me. I was in shock and very surprised and I can’t wait to go,” said Hoyte.
“It shows the effort I have put this season and I’ve played nearly every match, which was main objective this season. To be recognised for that is a great achievement.”
Hoyte was part of Arsenal's academy and played one game for their Premiership first team. He also represented England at the Under-17, 18, 19 and U-20 level.

English-based duo Andre Boucaud and Justin Hoyte were among the first set of overseas-based players joining the Trinidad and Tobago national team camp yesterday as head coach Stephen Hart started training at the Hasely Crawford Stadium ahead of the upcoming friendly international against Argentina.
Also joining the training is captain Kenwyne Jones while former England under 20 player Gavin Hoyte is scheduled to arrive from London late yesterday.
European-based trio Radanfah Abu Bakr, Khaleem Hyland and Lester Peltier along with Canada-based defender Carlyle Mitchell and Us-based Kevan George are all scheduled in later this week while Orlando City midfielder Kevin Molino will join the team in Buenos Aires.
The other players present from the start of the training camp include goalkeepers Jan Michael Williams and Central FC teammates Willis Plaza, Yohance Marshall, Ataullah Guerra and Rundell Winchester.
Defence Force’s Curtis Gonzales, and W Connection midfielder Joevin Jones.
Marvin Phillip, Marcus Joseph, Trevin Caesar and Densill Theobald are all missing due to the schedule of Pro League matches on Tuesday.
Boucaud, coming off the English season with Notts County, said he was focused on the task ahead.
“It’s obviously two huge matches for us,” Boucaud said.
“And it’s important for us to come together at least a week before. We haven’t been together as a team since last November when we played Jamaica but I’m pretty sure all the boys are very eager to give their best in the training camp and to get everything in place for the game against Argentina,” he added.
“We as players always live for occasions like this. It’s going to be a mighty challenge for us because Argentina is Argentina so there’s no other incentive needed for you to be ready for this kind of game and then of course we have the second game against Iran which is also a quality side,” said the 29-year-old who has fifteen appearances for T&T.
“I’ve had a good season. I have a couple options with clubs that are interested in me at the moment but right now the focus is on international football and putting my best foot forward for Trinidad and Tobago. All the boys are set on that at the moment,” he added.

Got some dice-throws in this team - I'm convinced that Marshall will be in the squad given his performances in the past couple months, although maybe not starting given the quality we have back there. Likewise, I think the lack of exposure to Hart could undermine Power's chances of getting into teh squad. Jorsling might not play given the lack of play for Defence Force, which opens it up to probably the most competitive front-line in a while in terms of places. Any of Plaza, Joseph, Glen and Caesar could nick that, as well as R Winchester or some other youths if he felt like blooding them.

This would actually make sense if Hart decides to play Joevin as a CM or LM but since i doubt this will happen i doubt there will be a replacement call up. Having said that I cant see Hart playing an offensive minded LB in a game that we will have less than 40% of the ball.

Carlos is AHEAD of Justin Hoyte at Millwall. He is playing in Justin's position while Justin is kicking round with the reserves. If Justin could get call up (which I have no problem with) Carlos could get call up. I doubt he'll be asked to play on the wing. He's still a Championship level right back, though.

one senior player who is still playing championship ball is not a terrible decision...

National senior men’s team head coach Stephen Hart has described the first few days of preparations ahead of the friendly international against Argentina as satisfying.
Hart welcomed European-based duo Khaleem Hyland and Lester Peltier into his training camp on Friday as both players took part in the evening session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, before the team returned for dinner at the Radisson Hotel. The squad then witnessed the Digicel Pro Bowl final later that evening.
Hart intends to lift the intensity next week as the June 4 friendly in Buenos Aires approaches.
“It’s been a pretty good week. We still don’t have the full squad because a couple of our players have club commitments but based on what I’ve seen, it has been good. I like the intensity and everyone looks focused but of course we still have work to do and every day is crucial in the lead up to these games,” said Hart.
Millwall’s Carlos Edwards, a veteran of the 2006 World Cup squad, arrived in Port-of-Spain on Friday night and was expected to train on Saturday. Orlando City midfielder Kevin Molino lined up for Orlando City in a 1-0 loss to Italian Serie A club AS Roma on Friday and will join the squad in Argentina, while the likes of Radanfah Abu Bakr, Carlyle Mitchell and Kevan George will join the camp this week.
“Carlos has been one of the longstanding servers to the national team and he has been consistent. He continues to play at a respectable level. He definitely has the experience,” Hart said.
Hart has been monitoring the preparations of the Argentina and Iran teams. Iran drew 0-0 with Belarus last week while Argentina has been in training in Ezeiza.
“We’ve been keeping tabs on them. Obviously these are teams preparing for a World Cup so their preparations will be on point. I expect both to be fully ready by the time these games come around because we are playing mere days before the World Cup begins.”
Hyland, one of T&T’s marquee players in Europe, is expected to sign with another club in Europe shortly. He too expects the matches to be challenging.
“I think the players are all looking forward to the games and will all be focusing and trying to work hard and prepare well. Playing against the likes of Argentina and Iran is massive in every aspect,” Hyland said.

With just under two weeks left before T&T takes the field against Argentina, national team goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams says the opportunity to play in a match of such magnitude is something players can only dream about.
Williams has been in training with the rest of the T&T squad at the Hasely Crawford Stadium and enters the final week under Stephen Hart before they depart for Buenos Aires, on Saturday.
“This is what we dream about as players. We follow football extensively. Some of us have played at the international level both for club and country and then there are those who are still working towards it. Some people say maybe we are not ready to play Argentina and Iran but I believe we could feel assured of our potential,” said Williams.
“I don’t think we need to feel afraid. Of course they will be well prepared and they have some of the best players in the world in their team. But we will be relish that challenge. This is a bit of a dream come true story for us. We want to see how far off we are. Maybe we have a long way to go but practicing with the best can only have benefits,” added the Central FC custodian.
Slovakia-based winger Lester Peltier joined the camp on Saturday and is also gearing up for what he says will be perhaps his biggest international game to date.
“Everyone back in Slovakia has been talking about my country’s game with Argentina. It was a big piece of news for them when they heard we got the game scheduled and after winning the league there I think the coach and the rest of the team at Slovan will be rooting for Trinidad and Tobago,” Peltier said.
“Everybody knows what Argentina can do but for us it’s just a game where we have everything to gain and nothing to lose. I think we can go there and give a good account of ourselves. And to do that I think all the boys know how important it is to have a strong training camp,” Peltier added.

Among Carlyle Mitchell’s best international memories to date was a matchup against Peru. Safe to say June 4 will top that.
Mitchell, the Whitecaps’ Trinidadian centre back, left Sunday for Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago, where his national team is preparing for a game against Argentina at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
“It’s going to be a great experience to play against the top players in the world,” said Mitchell, 26. “I’m excited. It’s a challenging opponent.”
But Mitchell said he won’t get wrapped up in thoughts of Lionel Messi and Co.
“I’m just going to play my game,” he said. “I can’t control Messi, but I can control myself.”
Trinidad and Tobago also face World Cup-bound Iran on June 8 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which means a likely meeting with Caps teammate Steven Beitashour.
“We have nothing to lose,” Mitchell said of the two friendlies. “These guys are preparing for the World Cup and we go in as underdogs.”
Mitchell’s yet to start an MLS game this season, though coach Carl Robinson turned to him in both legs of the Canadian championship semifinal.
Mitchell was among the best Whitecaps in that series defeat.
“If not the best,” said Robinson. “He was fantastic. He won every ball in the air. He was aggressive.
“He’s shown me now, 10 games in, that he’s up to the level he was at last year. He’s got himself back up to speed after a slow start in pre-season and he’s given me a good problem.
“Playing against Argentina is a tough one for him but it’s a great test to see where he’s at.”

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Stephen Hart is urging some of the home-based professionals in the national team for the Argentina and Iran matches to lift their levels of energy as the 23-man squad heads into its second week of preparations in Port of Spain.
Led by the most experienced of the youngsters, midfielder Joevin Jones, with 33 appearances to his name, Hart wants to see more energy from him and fellow home-based pros Rundell Winchester and Ataullah Guerra of Central FC and Trevin Caesar of North East Stars.
“I think if you look at players like Joevin Jones, Guerra, Winchester and Caesar, you see those players have some very good qualities, but their intensity levels and their levels of concentration need to improve, especially off the ball, and a lot of what we are doing is encouraging that and ensuring that their mentality is right and they remain very competitive for selection. I have to be very demanding of them to ensure they are switched on all the time,” Hart stated.
Summing up the training sessions so far, which have included double sessions on some days, Hart added: “We’re grateful for the opportunity. We’ve had five days together and the majority of time we’ve operated with 14 or 15 players but now we have everyone in camp and we can increase the intensity of training.
Former England Under-21 defender Gavin Hoyte has been in training for the first time and has settled in nicely, according to Hart.
“He’s fitted in quite well, he has been very responsive and trains with a tremendous attitude. He’s getting accustomed to the heat.”
Hart, who guided T&T to back-to-back wins over Jamaica last year as well as a 3-1 win over Saudi Arabia in Riyadh, said his players have been very committed to the task at hand so far.
“You have to be very realistic when you enter a game like this. We know we are going to spend long periods of time without the ball. We are playing away from home in Argentina’s backyard. We just have to be mentally prepared to not be afraid to play and to keep the ball more effectively when we do get it and also not make mistakes in crucial parts of the field.
We have to understand as a team how we will recover the ball when we don’t have it. We have a short window of opportunity to put all of that into training. But all I ask of the players is that they give of their best and give 100 per cent into training.
“Overall, I’ve been impressed with the attitude and the intensity of the players. We have two different type of players with one set just coming off a season and others already having a bit of a break after finishing their seasons. But I’m pretty pleased with the intensity of the majority of the players, especially the guys who are coming back from the overseas leagues,” Hart added.
Vancouver Whitecaps defender Carlyle Mitchell was the final overseas player to join the camp at the Radisson Trinidad Hotel on Sunday evening. The team departs for Buenos Aires on Saturday night.
Members of the public, in particular schoolchildren are invited to attend the team’s final training session at home on Thursday from 5 p.m. at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

And this arrangement was made for the local fans to see the national squad, dubbed the “Soca Warriors”, in their preparation for back-to-back friendly internationals, against Argentina (June 4 at La Plata, Argentina) and Iran (June 8 at Sao Paulo, Brazil).
A media release on Tuesday from the TT Football Association (TTFA) noted that fans will have the opportunity to meet the players for photo opportunities and autographs at the end of the session (approximately 7pm).
TT captain Kenwyne Jones said, “it’s been a good few days of preparation for us and every player is really up for the challenge ahead in these two matches. T&T’s Soca Warriors will play Argentina in a friendly international on June 4.
Head coach Stephen Hart observed a 90-minute match between two teams comprising players from the squad. There were no major injury concerns at the end of the training camp, which was supported by the Sportt Company of Trinidad and Tobago, with only goalkeeper Marvin Phillip nursing a slight problem.
“Generally it’s been a good camp for us. I’m pleased with the mindset among the players and I’ve seen some good things,” Hart told T&T Football Association media officer Shaun Fuentes.
“Of course, the key moments will come over the next few days. When we get to Buenos Aires the conditions will be new to us and we’ll assess everything and ensure the players are settled in and that everyone can focus on the match next Wednesday,” Hart added.
Former national forward Jason Scotland, who checked out the team’s training this week, is wishing the Warriors well in their two matches against Argentina and Iran.
“This one is big. It’s good for the Association to get such an absolutely massive game against Argentina. I’m kind of jealous of the guys really because I don’t think in my time we got the chance to play in such a big match outside of the World Cup,” Scotland told Fuentes.
“I think the young talent is there and the average age is around 25 and it’s great to see the younger players coming through and growing off the experience of some of the more experienced guys like Densill (Theobald) and Kenwyne (Jones).
I hope they can go there and give a good showing and take everything away from the experience,” said the Hamilton striker, who scored in regulation time and the penalty shootout to lead his club to a playoff win over Hibernian and promotion to the Scottish Premiership.

Not sure im as optimistic as you are about the local players. Only 2 will probably start Jan & Guerra. Also Hart keep saying that the local based has alot of work to do to be ready for Argentina & Iran. This week he challenged Joevin Jones and a couple others to improve their game. I was actually a little disappointed because if Hart could see the lack of movement in a couple training exercises then what kind of coaching where they getting on a weekly basis at their clubs.

Trinidad and Tobago’s 22-man squad will depart for Buenos Aires on Sunday morning with all intentions of producing a spirited performance in next Wednesday’s Friendly International against South American giants Argentina at the Estadio Monumental.
Head Coach Stephen Hart conducted his last two sessions on home soil at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Saturday and will be hoping to see his squad members give everything in the highly anticipated encounter at the home venue for top Argentina club River Plate.
Team captain Kenwyne Jones says his teammates will not be bothered by who Argentina head coach Alejandro Sabella includes in his starting eleven for the 4:30pm kick off (3:30pm T&T Time).
“We are happy to be going to play the game and we are going to put our best foot forward. We’re focused and we intend to take that into the match. We’re not too bothered about who their coach is going to select in his starting team,” Jones told TTFA Media.
“We’ve been in camp since the 20th and preparation have been coming along quite well. We had a nice blow out in the final scrimmage and the team and everyone seems in pretty good condition as we head into Argentina.
“Of course it’s a big test to play Argentina. It’s no different to us going to play Guatemala or Honduras in Honduras. I think it’s going to be the same kind of atmosphere. Of course they are preparing for a World Cup and they have some of the world’s best players but we are going to go there to try and improve on the things we have done in the past and also work on some new stuff. For us it’s all about moving forward with our preparation for the next World Cup campaign,” the Cardiff City forward stated.
DirecTV W Connection midfielder Joevin Jones is also keen on taking the field against the two-time World Cup winners.
“I’ve been in some big games before but this has to be the biggest of my career. I’m just concentrating on my task. I’d like to play my part in trying to help the team give a strong showing. I’ll be thinking about everything that I have to do on matchday over the next few days,” Jones said.
Hart’s squad does not include Carlos Edwards who was excused due to personal matters. Hart made it clear that the Millwall player was not omitted as the original plan was to in fact carry a 23-man squad with Edwards included, even with Columbus Crew eventually deciding to allow Kevan George to join the T&T squad.
“I’m a bit disappointed because I had all intentions of traveling with the team. Unfortunately a matter came up which has forced me to sit out this one. The match will also be shown live on international sports network BeIN Sports, Sport TV LIVE, SuperSport HD2 Africa, SuperSport 5 Africa, TV2 Sport Premium and Fox Sports among others.
The match will be broadcasted live in some 92 countries including Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Argentina, Bahrain, Benin, Bolivia, Bosnia, Botswana, Brazil, Burkino Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Canada, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Chile, Colombia, Comoros, Congo, Congo DR, Croatia, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Ecuador, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Libya, Lebanon, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Montenegro, Nigeria, Norway, Qatar, Paraguay, Peru, South Africa, Spain, USA, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Uruguay, Yemen and Zambia among others.
“This is something close to what we experienced during the 2006 World Cup in terms of where our country’s national flag will be seen and where the name Trinidad and Tobago will be announced for 90 plus minutes of football action,” TTFA President Raymond Tim Kee told TTFA Media on Saturday.
“That alone is a something very significant. My hopes are that we can produce a creditable showing regardless of the final result. I believe that it is not beyond us and I am taking the opportunity now to wish the entire squad the very best in Wednesday’s match. The World will be watching and Trinidad and Tobago will be centre stage,” he added.
The Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Sport and Sportt Company are supporters of the National Team for this match. The Ministry of Tourism will oversee all branding activities to promote Trinidad and Tobago during the team's stay in Buenos Aires and at the match at the Estadio Monumental.

“It’s good to be here,” Hart told TTFA Media.
“We’ve known about this game since the start of the year and getting to the country and settling in is always something you want to get out of the way. It was a long day so the players will get some rest and have the morning off. We’ll have a session in the afternoon and just continue focusing on what’s ahead of us on Wednesday,” he added.
The temperature here was just around 11 degrees on Sunday night and is expected to get up to around 16 degrees during the day.
Also arriving was TTFA President Raymond Tim Kee, while General Secretary Sheldon Phillips arrived a day in advance. Ministry of Tourism officials are also in Buenos Aires to lend their support. Wednesday's encounter will now kick off at 7:30pm (6:30pm T&T Time) following a change by the Argentina Football Association.
Hart, skipper Jones and Belgium-based midfielder Khaleem Hyland will attend a press conference at the Marriott Hotel at 2pm on Monday before the team’s training session at 4pm.
Wednesday’s friendly international between Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s national team and one of the 2014 World Cup favourites Argentina, will be telecast live on local Government Information Services Limited (GISL) Channel 4 at 6:30 p.m.

I have had the fortunate privilige to recently spend extended periods of time in Argentina. Naturally football comes up as the global language.
The first thing you hadda appreciate is how much Argentina loves footbal. Billboards of players litter the highways, these fellas down there are Gods. On any given day at 12noon, you see numerous players obviously attached to various clubs out in the city and hot sun running to build fitness. And sometimes I wonder why we always look so unfit when we play these top level countries. Its no wonder De Maria could take over a game in the closing stages like he did vs Atleti.
The AFA have a real bess training academy/facility right outside the airport. Looks very much like what you see on TV for the big European clubs and their training grounds.
I am pretty certain just as we will be in some culture shock, plenty of Buenos Aires will be too for the simple fact that in all my time there I see only 2 black people - both times in the airport. But thats a whole other argument I saw even discussed here on this forum Re race and Argentina. I personally never experience any negative vibes, i think its just that we will be verrrry different to what they used to down there.
They have some real bess things around the place, I know mr Lara will enjoy heself.
Buenos Aires, or the urban sprawl that they refer to as it, is easily the largest city I have ever seen in my life from the air. I think the wider city itself has like 15 million flikkin people.
You think is only Trinidad have stories of yutes in the ghetto kicking ball on the road or on a real lame field - i see some football fields over there I would think twice to park my car on that. NO wonder them men have impeccable control on good grass fields.
One of the things I really struggle with was the food. Very italian in nature I found, too much cheese and not enough taste.

With regard to actual football, Argentinians are as passionate about their team in tournaments just as you would expect. Lots of debate around players, coaches, etc.
From my experience they all obviously rate Messi as the best in the world. Strangely, not many rate him as highly as Maradonna.
They regard Brazil as the eternal rivals. Uruguay has nuff respect but they look on them as small brothers.
The 0-5 home loss to Colombia in the 90's is still a very sore point to any Argentinian you talk to. Its like our Nov 19th.
Their knowledge of CONCACAF is interesting. THey dont really rate anything in our region. Mexico, who I thin has had a couple good results against them in years gone by, I think they consider as a decent team, but nothing much more than a quarterfinals team. Make no mistake - they always fancy their chances of getting to WC finals. they played the US last year I think in the US and reminded me of the early part of the Trini - England WC game, where not a man from Trin was getting to even touch the ball. The US players were very much in awe of them in the first alf and got carved open very badly over and over again. But as with the US, they came out fighting second half and made a real game of it.
So you can imagine what Argentina think of Trinidad and Tobago. Most people dont know where we are, when you explain close to venezuela, they understand.
The best way I can put it... is that from their perspective, playing a game against T&T is equivalent of Trinidad playing Curacao or Montseratt before we set off to Germany 2006.
This isnt a disgrace to these caribbean countries, nor to us, its just the world pecking order. Like West Indies playing Holland in cricket.
We were obviousy chosen as the prototype for their Nigerian game. I hope we put up a real fight.
All the fight in the world dont really help you when you chasing ghosts in the River Plate, by men who are obviously in a different technical league than you. You boil down real fast. But with the right tactical approach and the game of their lives, in football you never know. But sometimes in games like these you grow up, where the game could be lost on the flight over Buenos Aires and the bus drive through the city to play a team with such a stature.
Games like these prepae you for Central America WCQ, very similar atmosphere. I have never been to a game in Buenos Aires, but the whole setup look very Mexico-city like. The higher pedigree of the opponent may be cancelled out by the fact that Buenos Aires is at sea-level.
Some of the nicest people around, but when is football, these people go crazy to the point of riot sometimes. Thank God we wont have to worry about that tomorrow.
A good display and result tomorrow will do wonders for the next few years when we play in tough places in Central America.

Somehow, the Warriors, who left Trinidad with three team managers, Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president Raymond Tim Kee, the Siparia Rhythm Section and celebrity guests like former West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara and Trinidad and Tobago President Anthony Carmona on board, could not find room on the chartered Caribbean Airlines flight for their goalkeeper coach and physiotherapist.
TTFA general secretary Sheldon Phillips travelled to Argentina a day before everyone else and has been in Buenos Aires since Saturday.
Up until the time of publication, the TTFA had not provided an explanation for the mix-up, which head coach Stephen Hart described as “a bit of a setback.” Wired868 understands that Maurice, a former “Strike Squad” star, and Isaac only found out that they would not be travelling to Argentina this weekend as the team prepared for its Sunday morning exit.
The change was allegedly engineered by Ministry of Tourism officials who opted to leave two members of the Trinidad and Tobago technical staff behind in Piarco; rather than force two members of its own entourage, which included the Siparia Rhythm Section, to catch a later flight.
Hart, via a press release, said he was relieved to finally have his entire staff together for the toughest international of his tenure so far.
“Obviously it’s a lot better having everyone here now,” Hart told the TTFA Media. “There was a bit of a setback with two of the staff members not being able to get on the flight. But that’s behind us now and we’re placing all our energies towards the game now.”
Hart admitted that there were some nerves from the younger players but said his team had settled in well and hoped to give the host team as tough a game as possible. Thus far, the temperature has wavered between 5 and 11 degrees Celsius although it is expected to climb to a moderately chilly 16 degrees Celsius by kick off.
“We would have had two sessions here in Argentina going into the game and the players all appear to be settled in and ready,” said Hart. “There will always be some nerves especially among the younger ones and then it’s no secret that we are coming up against one of the top sides in the world in their own backyard.
“But these boys live for games like these… We do not expect anything but a strong encounter and we’ll give it our best to stay in the match for as long as possible.”
Argentina selected its final 23-man squad this morning with the major surprise being the exclusion of former Valencia midfielder Ever Banega. Banega, like Juventus forward Carlos Tevez and PSG playmaker Javier Pastore, will all have to watch the 2014 World Cup from home.
However, Argentina is anchored by arguably the greatest player of his generation, Barcelona star Lionel Messi, and is not short of attacking options with Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria all included along with midfield hardman Javier Mascherano and right back Pablo Zabaleta. TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Soca Warriors will be prepared to give everything in an attempt to defy the odds and come away with an upset or a draw in today’s international friendly clash with world powerhouse Argentina at the Estadio Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires from (6:30 pm TT time).
Led by skipper Kenwyne Jones, TT are on a five-game unbeaten run but are fully aware that they face a mountainous task against the two-time World Champions in their own backyard.
Since arriving there on Sunday night, coach Stephen Hart has since conducted two training sessions at the San Lorenzo training pitch as neither the TT nor the home team were allowed to practice at the match venue prior to the match.
Despite the chilly conditions that range between 5-10 degrees, Hart feels that his troops will not be challenged by it.
The travelling contingent also brought some warmth to the players with popular cultural group-the Siparia Rhythm Section Tassa Group and Steelpan which made the players feel at home in La Plata.
Cricket legend Brian Lara accompanied the touring party of supporters on a city tour on Monday as he partook in Tango dancing with some of the locals. There was understandably a less holiday-like buzz for Jones and his men as they remained focused on the task at hand.
Two staff members who did not get on the charter, goalkeeping coach Michael Maurice and football therapist Dave Isaac arrived on an American Airlines flight early yesterday and Hart said he was happy that they had arrived.
“Obviously it’s a lot better having everyone here now. There was a bit of a setback with two of the staff members not being able to get on the flight. But that’s behind us now and we’re placing all our energies towards the game now,” Hart told TTFA Media.
“We would have had two sessions here in Argentina going into the game and the players all appear to be settled in and ready. There will always be some nerves especially among the younger ones and then it’s no secret that we are coming up against one of the top sides in the world in their own backyard,” Hart said.
“But these boys live for games like these and whether we can hold it together will be certain before our eyes once the match gets going.
“We do not expect anything but a strong encounter and we’ll give it our best to stay in the match for as long as possible.”
Hart will depend on the services of defenders Carlyle Mitchell, Radanfah Abu Bakr, Sheldon Bateau, Justin and Gavin Hoyte with the likes of Khaleem Hyland, Andre Boucaud, Lester Peltier, Kevin Molino, Ataullah Guerra and Jones shouldering the attacking responsibilities. The youngsters such as Trevin Caesar, Willis Plaza, Rundell Winchester and Marcus Joseph will also hope to create some impact.
President of the Republic, His Excellency Anthony Carmona will attend the match along with TTFA president Raymond Tim Kee. They will be among 100 TT fans that will cheer on the TT team in the 50, 000 seated facility.
The match is expected to be aired live in 92 countries including GISL TV 4 in TT.
Argentina head coach Alejandro Sabella named his final World Cup squad this week with Nicolás Otamendi, Éver Banega and José Sosa being the three players to miss out. Martín Demichelis joined his fellow Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta and striker Sergio Agüero in the squad as Atletico Mineiro’s Otamendi was the defender to make way.
Boca Juniors’ Fernando Gago was selected despite fitness concerns as Banega, of Newell’s Old Boys, and Atlético Madrid’s Sosa were left out of a midfield selection which also features Javier Mascherano, Ángel di María, Lucas Biglia, Maxi Rodríguez, Ricardo Álvarez, Enzo Pérez and Augusto Fernández. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuaín, Paris Saint Germain’s Ezequiel Lavezzi and Rodrigo Palacio of Internazionale join Agüero in a fearsome strike force.

Trinidad and Tobago will give everything as they attempt to defy the odds and come away with something from today’s friendly international against Argentina, known as the Albicelestes (sky blue and whites), at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires from 6:30 p.m. T&T Time.
Led by skipper Kenwyne Jones, T&T are on a five-game unbeaten run but are fully aware that they face a mountainous task against the two-time World Champions in their own backyard.

For the record, Argentina fielded a very young team, with just Racing Club midfielder Rudolphe Vincente and striker Hector Yazalde having reached age 21. At age 18, Boca Juniors striker Carlos Garcia was the youngest of the South Americans.
But there is no dismissing the magnitude of Trinidad and Tobago’s 1-0 victory over Argentina at the 1967 PanAm Games in Winnipeg, Canada. It was a magical tournament for the Caribbean team, fielding a football squad for the first time at the PanAm Games, topping their group, and also winning a bronze medal.
The Argentines were young, but players of potential. A couple of them went on to play in Europe, while at least two later represented the senior Argentine team at international level. Right-back Bargas had 30 national caps and later also played in France for both Metz and Nantes, while striker Yazalde, who died at age 51 in 1997, was once European Golden Shoe winner after scoring 46 goals.
Yazalde also had ten senior national team caps and was a member of Argentina’s 1974 FIFA World Cup team, where he twice scored in a 4-1 win over Haiti. Prominent members of the T&T team included 32-year-old Association Footballer of the Year and the captain Sedley Joseph, 30-year-old Alvin Corneal, and goalie Lincoln “Tiger” Phillips.
Men against boys some might say. But it was no less easy for Trinidad & Tobago, although the Caribbean team had an advantage because FIFA at that time allowed developing CONCACAF teams like Mexico, Canada, Bermuda and T&T to field full national teams, while restricting South Americans Argentina and Colombia to under-23 players. Years later, FIFA changed the rules and restricted all teams to under-23 players.
Corneal played the entire match as T&T cancelled out two first half Alfonzo Tovar (34th & 43rd) goals when Gerry Brown (59th & 88th), Pat Small (79th & 80th) and Kevin Berassa (64th) scored to give them a 5-2 victory over an equally young Colombian team. Injury kept him out the 1-1 draw against Mexico, which had beaten the Caribbean team 4-0 three months before, and he went off annoyed when coach Conrad Brathwaite took him off for the final few minute of the Argentina match.
Kevin Berassa had scored for T&T just about 12 minutes from the end, but Argentina was coming forward in waves. “The guys fought that final 11 minutes to the very end,” Corneal recalled. “I would like to think it was the best bunch of players Trinidad and Tobago had used in a football match up till then.”
Corneal recalls that few believed that a relatively unknown Trinidad and Tobago could beat Argentina at any level, far less advance from a group that also included Mexico and Colombia.
“It seemed a foregone conclusion to everyone that we were not going to come out of the group,” Corneal said frankly. “It was an expectation by the people of Trinidad and Tobago that we were definitely out of depth.”
Tall in goal for Trinidad and Tobago and in his prime at age 26, goalie “Tiger” Phillips remembered being “very busy”, against the young Argentines, who were not taking defeat to an unknown Trinidad and Tobago easily. “Argentina was supposed to win the gold medal,” Phillips declared. “They were the big team.”
Later, T&T were upset 3-1 by Bermuda at the semi-final stage, but beat Canada 4-1 for third spot, while Mexico won gold. Since 1967, Trinidad and Tobago played Argentina three times at Pan Am level, losing 3-2 in 1971. Then Ron La Forrest and company went down 5-1 in 1975, and T&T also lost 6-0 in 1987 when current T&T assistant national coach Hutson Charles and company were in their prime.
Forty-seven years later, the bronze medal is still the only piece of silverware a Trinidad and Tobago men’s national football team has won at the Pam-Am Games. And like them all those years ago, Phillips is backing the current T&T national team to defy expectations and put up a fight against a star-studded Argentina, when the teams meet today in a Pre-World Cup friendly international in Buenos Aires.
“It’s a great opportunity. To have such an opportunity is wonderful. I don’t care what the result,” Phillips declared.“This is our World Cup. It is good for our players and for the coaches, to prepare for a match against a team which is one of the favourites to win the World Cup.”

FORMER Trinidad and Tobago Football Association technical director, Anton Corneal believes today’s highly anticipated clash between the “Soca Warriors” and the mighty Argentina should derive significant benefit for both teams.
The national squad, led by coach Stephen Hart, is expected to face their toughest opposition in recent history when they square off against a Lionel Messi-led South American outfit at the Estadio Monumental from 6.30 pm (TT time). With just under ten days to go before the start of football’s biggest competitive stage, the 2014 World Cup Finals in Brazil, Corneal is optimistic that the national contingent can use this golden opportunity to analyse and evaluate themselves against a top-quality team such as Argentina.
“From the Trinidad and Tobago point of view, they can always gain experience from such a game against such a prized team. Playing against so many world class players on one field at one time is good for us to see how we can adapt tactically and technically. It’s a good time for some of their players and ours as well to show up. This is an opportunity for both teams,” explained Corneal yesterday.
And even though the red, white and black would be going up against certain World Cup title contenders, Corneal also mentioned that today’s encounter should also bring some benefit to the Argentinians.
Today’s match-up will also be the host nation’s final clash before they depart to Brazil. According to the former national footballer, Argentina might as well be using this opportunity to fine tune ahead of their hectic campaign which kicks off in Rio de Janeiro next Thursday.

Former United States president Ronald Reagan once said the most terrifying words in the English language are: I am from the Government; and I am here to help.
Maybe Reagan had Trinidad and Tobago Government officials in mind.
The “Soca Warriors” received a friendly invitation for a football match from 2014 World Cup title contender Argentina, ranked seventh in the world by FIFA, and the Ministry of Tourism spotted an inherent opportunity to market the two island republic and graciously stepped in to help sponsor the tour.
But, by the weekend before the high-profile friendly, the Government had clearly forgotten the purpose of the trip. And the CAL chartered flight that left Piarco for Buenos Aires had an eclectic guest list that included Government officials, former West Indies cricket star Brian Lara, president Anthony Carmona and his wife and the Siparia Rhythm Section. But there was no space for goalkeeping coach Michael Maurice and therapist Dave Isaac; and it was another two days before they made it to South America.
Any two persons on the flight could have given up their seats and postponed their trip until Tuesday. But that would have meant considering the needs of the country’s young men first; and such foresight, humility and empathy is always unlikely when the Government is handling operations.
Just thank the Lord that no one was fondled, pushed over and screwed on the trip. Mr Live Wire understands Glenn Ramadharsingh was not on board.
To be fair, the People’s Partnership does not have sole ownership of the “Me First” attitude.
Just over a week ago, Port of Spain mayor Raymond Tim Kee could not spare two hours for a town meeting on the Brian Lara Promenade, which was put on by TV6 for the benefits of his environs and included DOMA president Gregory Aboud and Minister Bhoe Tewarie.
Yet, Tim Kee was happy to clear his week’s schedule to spend five days gallivanting in Argentina with the Warriors (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=252q01zej9A). Worse, the football president plans to return to Trinidad.
If the TTFA president, albeit one who doesn’t pay his coaches, does not respect his players and staff enough to sacrifice his seat and prioritise their needs as they go to battle for Trinidad and Tobago; then why would anyone else care?
So, Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams was denied the chance of extra practice with his specialist coach; and God knows he might need it as he prepares to face the Argentine firing squad of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain.
Still, it could have been worse. At least Minister Two Pull (http://wired868.com/2014/05/22/zero-tolerance-anil-breaks-silence-on-dope-video/) was not there to show the goalkeeper how to wrap up the action.

Warriors’ physio and goalkeeper coach get to Argentina two days late

Trinidad and Tobago national football team physiotherapist Dave Isaac and goalkeeping coach Michael Maurice finally landed in Buenos Aires this morning; almost two days after the “Soca Warriors” arrived in Argentina.
Trinidad and Tobago was forced to hold two training sessions without the services of either employee as the Warriors prepare to meet Argentina in friendly battle on Wednesday night. The game will be beamed live from the Estadio Monumental at 6.30 pm (TT time) on GISL Channel Four.
Somehow, the Warriors, who left Trinidad with three team managers, Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president Raymond Tim Kee, the Siparia Rhythm Section and celebrity guests like former West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara and Trinidad and Tobago President Anthony Carmona on board, could not find room on the chartered Caribbean Airlines flight for their goalkeeper coach and physiotherapist. TTFA general secretary Sheldon Phillips travelled to Argentina a day before everyone else and has been in Buenos Aires since Saturday.
Up until the time of publication, the TTFA had not provided an explanation for the mix-up, which head coach Stephen Hart described as “a bit of a setback.”
Wired868 understands that Maurice, a former “Strike Squad” star, and Isaac only found out that they would not be travelling to Argentina this weekend as the team prepared for its Sunday morning exit. The change was allegedly engineered by Ministry of Tourism officials who opted to leave two members of the Trinidad and Tobago technical staff behind in Piarco; rather than force two members of its own entourage, which included the Siparia Rhythm Section, to catch a later flight.
Hart, via a press release, said he was relieved to finally have his entire staff together for the toughest international of his tenure so far.

So the staff did not know they were ghoing to Argentina until 2 days before the team left and they were left out of the charter flight.

But their defence is not on par, hopefull, T&T dont sit back, maybe they could pull it off if they go into the game to win it.

My Argentina experience
Men can be basic creatures at times. A semi revealing bathing suit, a sporting event, even a cold beer.... all serve to satisfy a man's most basic desires.
For the football fan, and perhaps more so for the Trini football fan, rarely can anything compare to the national team playing against a top flight country or in a world cup qualifier do or die game.
We only have to look back to 1989 vs USA, 2005 vs Bahrain and 2008 vs England to remember how filled the stadium was and the excitement that accompanied those match ups.
When the friendly (for us)/ world cup warm up (for them), vs Argentina was announced and confirmed, and I can say this without fear of contradiction, no one was more excited than I was.
I've been a lifelong Argentina fan. At primary school in 1990, I cried as if I had lost a loved one, first when Cameroon won the opener and again when Germany won the final. A door in my parents' house remains emblazoned with the words 'Diego Maradona #10', written in liquid paper when I was 7 or 8 years old. As I grew older, my girlfriend (now my wife) would resolve our disagreements with presentations of Argentina football jerseys. My adoration of Argentina knew and continues to know no bounds. I am Argentina.
I respected Brazil as a football nation, but they always paled in comparison to my beloved Argentina. Brazil produced legends....Argentina gave us Gods.
I immediately knew that I would be in Argentina to look at the game.
As it turned out, I had to exclude myself from the TTFF charter to Argentina. My son, a young and budding wing back for W Connection's league topping U16 team had a game on the Sunday the charter flight was due to leave and I opted to be present at his game rather than on the charter flight.
As a result I booked my own travel arrangements on American Airlines and left Trinidad on Monday afternoon.
My excitement was at fever pitch. Argentina. The promised land. The cradle of my football life. Any true footballer or fan must make the journey to Argentina as necessary as the Muslims to Egypt, the Hindus to India or Giorgio Tsoukalos to the Nazca lines.
Stopping off in Miami I refuelled. I let my family know I was at my first stop and if they didn't hear from me for the next 3 days that they should fear not....for either I am inextricably bound and gagged by the throes of ecstasy or I have passed on in the only place other than my wife's arms that God understood and would allow me to pay Him a permanent visit.
The flight out of Miami to Argentina was delayed by close to an hour. So I was on the plane for almost 10 hours by the time I landed in Buenos Aires. It was a very minor sacrifice. Visits to Anfield and Old Trafford required more sacrifice and offered less reward.
I switched on my phone to catch the airport WiFi (which was not free) and to contact a friend with whom prior arrangements had been made.
It was here that my excitement turned rapidly to despair.
The icons on my phone indicated voice mails and 500+ messages from various group whatsapp conversations. I chose to listen to the voice mails.
My wife's brother had been shot in an apparent botched robbery. He was in the hospital in a critical condition. My wife left the message not as a request to return, but rather for more informational purposes. In fact, she insisted that I stay on to fulfill my destiny, assuring me that all was under control.
A choice had to be made. Without second thought, I began what turned out to be an inordinately traumatic experience in changing my return flight plans. I paid the exorbitant change fee and waited literally all day for a flight back to Trinidad via Miami. I had landed in Buenos Aires a little after 10 am and boarded a flight to Miami at 10:55 pm.
Crime had hit my family in quick succession over the past few weeks. It is this for which my Argentina trip will be remembered. Not the historic walks and tours I had booked. Not the soca warriors vs the albiceleste. Not the pre scheduled visit to Villa Fiorito. Not the trip to la Iglesia Maradoniana.
Rather my memory will be of a woman who feigned strength to allow her husband his dream. Of a society so stricken with the malady of crime that even the best thought out plans remain saddled with the encumbrance of it.
To my wife.....I will never desert you even though you were willing to grant me the permission to do so.
Don't cry for me, Argentina.... the truth is I never loved you...at least not as much as I love my wife.
My consolation lies two fold.....I breathed the very air that He breathed, and I will be back. That I promise

I think 4-1 is more like it.
I worry about our lack of offence in mdfld.

Tragedy cuts short a life long dream

My Argentina experience
Men can be basic creatures at times. A semi revealing bathing suit, a sporting event, even a cold beer.... all serve to satisfy a man's most basic desires.
For the football fan, and perhaps more so for the Trini football fan, rarely can anything compare to the national team playing against a top flight country or in a world cup qualifier do or die game.
We only have to look back to 1989 vs USA, 2005 vs Bahrain and 2008 vs England to remember how filled the stadium was and the excitement that accompanied those match ups.
When the friendly (for us)/ world cup warm up (for them), vs Argentina was announced and confirmed, and I can say this without fear of contradiction, no one was more excited than I was.
I've been a lifelong Argentina fan. At primary school in 1990, I cried as if I had lost a loved one, first when Cameroon won the opener and again when Germany won the final. A door in my parents' house remains emblazoned with the words 'Diego Maradona #10', written in liquid paper when I was 7 or 8 years old. As I grew older, my girlfriend (now my wife) would resolve our disagreements with presentations of Argentina football jerseys. My adoration of Argentina knew and continues to know no bounds. I am Argentina.
I respected Brazil as a football nation, but they always paled in comparison to my beloved Argentina. Brazil produced legends....Argentina gave us Gods.
I immediately knew that I would be in Argentina to look at the game.
As it turned out, I had to exclude myself from the TTFF charter to Argentina. My son, a young and budding wing back for W Connection's league topping U16 team had a game on the Sunday the charter flight was due to leave and I opted to be present at his game rather than on the charter flight.
As a result I booked my own travel arrangements on American Airlines and left Trinidad on Monday afternoon.
My excitement was at fever pitch. Argentina. The promised land. The cradle of my football life. Any true footballer or fan must make the journey to Argentina as necessary as the Muslims to Egypt, the Hindus to India or Giorgio Tsoukalos to the Nazca lines.
Stopping off in Miami I refuelled. I let my family know I was at my first stop and if they didn't hear from me for the next 3 days that they should fear not....for either I am inextricably bound and gagged by the throes of ecstasy or I have passed on in the only place other than my wife's arms that God understood and would allow me to pay Him a permanent visit.
The flight out of Miami to Argentina was delayed by close to an hour. So I was on the plane for almost 10 hours by the time I landed in Buenos Aires. It was a very minor sacrifice. Visits to Anfield and Old Trafford required more sacrifice and offered less reward.
I switched on my phone to catch the airport WiFi (which was not free) and to contact a friend with whom prior arrangements had been made.
It was here that my excitement turned rapidly to despair.
The icons on my phone indicated voice mails and 500+ messages from various group whatsapp conversations. I chose to listen to the voice mails.
My wife's brother had been shot in an apparent botched robbery. He was in the hospital in a critical condition. My wife left the message not as a request to return, but rather for more informational purposes. In fact, she insisted that I stay on to fulfill my destiny, assuring me that all was under control.
A choice had to be made. Without second thought, I began what turned out to be an inordinately traumatic experience in changing my return flight plans. I paid the exorbitant change fee and waited literally all day for a flight back to Trinidad via Miami. I had landed in Buenos Aires a little after 10 am and boarded a flight to Miami at 10:55 pm.
Crime had hit my family in quick succession over the past few weeks. It is this for which my Argentina trip will be remembered. Not the historic walks and tours I had booked. Not the soca warriors vs the albiceleste. Not the pre scheduled visit to Villa Fiorito. Not the trip to la Iglesia Maradoniana.
Rather my memory will be of a woman who feigned strength to allow her husband his dream. Of a society so stricken with the malady of crime that even the best thought out plans remain saddled with the encumbrance of it.
To my wife.....I will never desert you even though you were willing to grant me the permission to do so.
Don't cry for me, Argentina.... the truth is I never loved you...at least not as much as I love my wife.
My consolation lies two fold.....I breathed the very air that He breathed, and I will be back. That I promise

HOT tears cursed down the cheeks of the favored Argentinians as they walked off the pitch at Winnipeg Stadium Friday night beaten 1-0 by the dark horses, Trinidad and Tobago, and out of the playoffs.
Centre forward Berassa was the hero, scrambling home the important goal in the 51st minute.
The match was conducted in an exemplary spirit: no doubt the players were sobered by the afternoon's events at Alexander Park.
Among the 5,000 in the stands the steel drums beat out. They had done it. Beaten the soccer supremos from South America, three times Pan-Am champions.
The Argentinians, individually the most gifted team in the tournament, put the noose around their own necks as they weaved themselves time and again into a red web of Trinidad defenders.
By contrast the Trinidadians swung the ball about, moving in beautiful concert in the second half.
Scorers in the battle of Alexander Park were Pereda 2 (one penalty) and Cerda.

The day Argentina fell.

For the record, Argentina fielded a very young team, with just Racing Club midfielder Rudolphe Vincente and striker Hector Yazalde having reached age 21. At age 18, Boca Juniors striker Carlos Garcia was the youngest of the South Americans.
But there is no dismissing the magnitude of Trinidad and Tobago’s 1-0 victory over Argentina at the 1967 PanAm Games in Winnipeg, Canada. It was a magical tournament for the Caribbean team, fielding a football squad for the first time at the PanAm Games, topping their group, and also winning a bronze medal.
The Argentines were young, but players of potential. A couple of them went on to play in Europe, while at least two later represented the senior Argentine team at international level. Right-back Bargas had 30 national caps and later also played in France for both Metz and Nantes, while striker Yazalde, who died at age 51 in 1997, was once European Golden Shoe winner after scoring 46 goals.
Yazalde also had ten senior national team caps and was a member of Argentina’s 1974 FIFA World Cup team, where he twice scored in a 4-1 win over Haiti. Prominent members of the T&T team included 32-year-old Association Footballer of the Year and the captain Sedley Joseph, 30-year-old Alvin Corneal, and goalie Lincoln “Tiger” Phillips.
Men against boys some might say. But it was no less easy for Trinidad & Tobago, although the Caribbean team had an advantage because FIFA at that time allowed developing CONCACAF teams like Mexico, Canada, Bermuda and T&T to field full national teams, while restricting South Americans Argentina and Colombia to under-23 players. Years later, FIFA changed the rules and restricted all teams to under-23 players.
Corneal played the entire match as T&T cancelled out two first half Alfonzo Tovar (34th & 43rd) goals when Gerry Brown (59th & 88th), Pat Small (79th & 80th) and Kevin Berassa (64th) scored to give them a 5-2 victory over an equally young Colombian team. Injury kept him out the 1-1 draw against Mexico, which had beaten the Caribbean team 4-0 three months before, and he went off annoyed when coach Conrad Brathwaite took him off for the final few minute of the Argentina match.
Kevin Berassa had scored for T&T just about 12 minutes from the end, but Argentina was coming forward in waves. “The guys fought that final 11 minutes to the very end,” Corneal recalled. “I would like to think it was the best bunch of players Trinidad and Tobago had used in a football match up till then.”
Corneal recalls that few believed that a relatively unknown Trinidad and Tobago could beat Argentina at any level, far less advance from a group that also included Mexico and Colombia.
“It seemed a foregone conclusion to everyone that we were not going to come out of the group,” Corneal said frankly. “It was an expectation by the people of Trinidad and Tobago that we were definitely out of depth.”
Tall in goal for Trinidad and Tobago and in his prime at age 26, goalie “Tiger” Phillips remembered being “very busy”, against the young Argentines, who were not taking defeat to an unknown Trinidad and Tobago easily. “Argentina was supposed to win the gold medal,” Phillips declared. “They were the big team.”
Later, T&T were upset 3-1 by Bermuda at the semi-final stage, but beat Canada 4-1 for third spot, while Mexico won gold. Since 1967, Trinidad and Tobago played Argentina three times at Pan Am level, losing 3-2 in 1971. Then Ron La Forrest and company went down 5-1 in 1975, and T&T also lost 6-0 in 1987 when current T&T assistant national coach Hutson Charles and company were in their prime.
Forty-seven years later, the bronze medal is still the only piece of silverware a Trinidad and Tobago men’s national football team has won at the Pam-Am Games. And like them all those years ago, Phillips is backing the current T&T national team to defy expectations and put up a fight against a star-studded Argentina, when the teams meet today in a Pre-World Cup friendly international in Buenos Aires.
“It’s a great opportunity. To have such an opportunity is wonderful. I don’t care what the result,” Phillips declared.“This is our World Cup. It is good for our players and for the coaches, to prepare for a match against a team which is one of the favourites to win the World Cup.”

They need to stop talking crap about we beat Argentina in 1967. Yes we won the game but People here laughing at that. It was Pan American games and it was Amateur football and an amateur Argentina and Colombia.
That was not the Argentina and Colombia squads that try to qualify for 66 & 70 WC. In any case that Argentina squad did not go on to qualify for 1970 WC and neither did Colombia.
Is pure crap Alvin and them turn into a myth to big up themselves.

Maybe Reagan had Trinidad and Tobago Government officials in mind.
The “Soca Warriors” received a friendly invitation for a football match from 2014 World Cup title contender Argentina, ranked seventh in the world by FIFA, and the Ministry of Tourism spotted an inherent opportunity to market the two island republic and graciously stepped in to help sponsor the tour.
But, by the weekend before the high-profile friendly, the Government had clearly forgotten its mandate. And the CAL chartered flight that left Piarco for Buenos Aires had an eclectic guest list that included Government officials, former West Indies cricket star Brian Lara, president Anthony Carmona and his wife and the Siparia Rhythm Section; but there was no space for goalkeeping coach Michael Maurice and therapist Dave Isaac. It took Maurice and Isaac another two days before they could join their colleagues in South America.
Any two persons on the flight could have given up their seats and postponed their trip until Tuesday. But that would have meant considering the needs of the country’s young men first; and such foresight, humility and vision is always unlikely when the Government is handling operations.
Just thank the Lord that no one was fondled, pushed over or screwed on the trip. Mr Live Wire understands that Glenn Ramadharsingh was not on board.
To be fair, the People’s Partnership does not have sole ownership of the “Me First” attitude.
Just over a week ago, Port of Spain mayor Raymond Tim Kee could not spare two hours for a town meeting on the Brian Lara Promenade, which was put on by TV6 for the benefits of his environs and included DOMA president Gregory Aboud and Minister Bhoe Tewarie.
Yet, Tim Kee was happy to clear his week’s schedule to spend five days gallivanting in Argentina with the Warriors. Worse, the football president plans to return to Trinidad.
If the TTFA president, albeit one who doesn’t pay his coaches, does not respect his players and staff enough to sacrifice his seat and prioritise their needs as they go to battle for Trinidad and Tobago; then why would anyone else care?

So, Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams was denied the chance of extra practice with his specialist coach; and God knows he might need it as he prepares to face the Argentine firing squad of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain.
Still, it could have been worse. At least Minister Two Pull was not there to show the goalkeeper how to wrap up the action.

First half was one of our best performances to date imo. Happy to see the guys working well enough to maintain the shape of the team.

Some decent plays in midfield but they have to watch the dribbling in our third. My heart jumped when I saw KJ about to stroke the ball home but that defender didn't waste time. That was a great opportunity.
We should be able to compete a lot more vs Iran. We need to get on the scoresheet.

The link up play between the the midfield and defense was non-existent for large portions of the match.
Peltier was lively in attack, but he did not support his right back when it was time to defend.

Yep Argie is in the southern hemisphere. Southern Brazil is like that also. I don't think they pick any southern city in Brazil for the WC. It is the beginning of fall/winter down there. Just like up here in foreign, we in the end of spring getting into summer.

During the game, ah say to mehself ... if we got to play ARG 10-15 times back to back, we would see incremental progress. We would probably also learn different things on different occasions.
ALSO ... to Bakes' point ... after playing them about 10-15 times perhaps we would find a moment where the star-struck thing wore off, and ball for ball just played.

you know I have to agree with Bakes for once in my life... williams is a shithong and done with the hero worship nonsense...
plenty room for improvement, they haven't played together for several months, 9 days of training, they did okay.. did well in the first half but lacked the grit and match fitness to carry it through in the 2nd.. not making excuses but what Hartie said is reality... all in all we could have performed better, jones should have played a better match

Now pull out de Google Earth and realise the country is much further South than I thought and is very mountainous. Den ah realise like de whole ah Chile is mountain but dais for another thread. We wouldnt play like this if this was a "competitive" match. I think Peltier and Marshall were good. Justin and Joevin not so much. The rest fought hard.
This was a different type of loss than I've become used to ... yuh on to something. We still have a lot of collective work to do. If I'm reading your comments right, (and others posted), I would agree that this effort tonight was highly individualized. Not what the coach wanted, but it's what he got.
I would like to see SH stay in the fray to consolidate the NT. He's invested a lot of time in getting to know the players and their attributes. He's garnered respect. He is eminently aware of the political variables. Iz good to see a Trini leading the line ... competent in the facets needed to be the face of a nation.
Let's hope he gets a regular paycheck and can move on from strength to strength.

Well said. At the top level the difference maker is often times the team who made that fatal mistake (cue up Gerard). The less mistake you make the greater chance you have of not losing.

Recently I made a comment about the goal Marvin Oliver scored on the boss free kick ... quality kicks gehhin put down in de Pro League. Without apology ah saying Jan lapsed mentally on this goal. And, the reality is, this mental lapse was fuh me the bulk of the error ... to begin with his organizational efforts with the wall were :frustrated:
I called the kick as generating a goal. Thought it would happen directly to his left ... but the intention to place it there was clear (it hit the damn post). Jan didn't act like he had any sight of the ball from the start.
Some months back I posted a free kick Riquelme converted ... delay, distractions etc ... whoosh goal! There's a lot to absorb as a keeper in those situations, but tonight's goal lacked much of that huge challenge.
Yuh could say our defenders should have reacted faster to the attacker breaking from the wall, but ... reaction was one of our issues tonight. Jes listen to what SH was telling the players to do b/c they weren't seeing it for themselves quickly to quickly enough.
Incidentally, I think Messi bought a cheap call there ... but hey, dahis Messi.

I've been noticing on [all] our NT teams some negative defensive similarity in similar situations.
I think we need to revisit individual development in an effort to cure our collective performance. If individuals players struggle with understanding their basic roles and responsibility in specific positions and situations then we will continue to struggle with the team performance.

IMO.. on one side it have a team with some of the best players in the world , able to play together on a regular basis against quality opposition , even participation in their training session will be a lesson. And then there is we. 1 last place team Premier league player...rest local, or 2 sometimes 3 divisions down, including 1st Division Belgium, not recognised as a BIG team division, ....it's Million of dollars vs less than 1/10th the amount. Not counting the culture. We didn't settle down, Argentina eased up...tried to practice their midfield & organization. However, what I think, is when they eased up and let us play, we did good and I think we surprised them as they didn't expect us to play so good. I think we were lucky, but they mess up too . I think we got a little respect there, that will soon be forgotten, once the WC starts. clap,clap.clap...veryyy good...no go outside and play now..
the more we get to play with people like them, the closer we will get to thinking & playing like them..

I share much of your sentiment ... particularly with respect to the original post. Here's what I doh agree with: there's been a charge - from time to time - that he's lazy. I agree it looks so ... but, I think it's tied to another point you made: lack of natural movement.
No point in the compare and contrast with DY and SJ ... different genre of ballers; different discussion. (Glen must have had an uncomfortable time watching this game).
I'm not a fan of the formation ... having used it, we didn't hit the nail on the head (just listen to SH during the game if anybody has a doubt). However, I agree ... I'm not sold on what's on offer there in terms of cost v benefit ... aside from leadership.

Had we gotten one practice game in...I think we may have had a more positive showing.
However I am proud at how the fellas played...Argentina is a big side. player for player they have better personnel and yet still we matched them.
Maybe Argentina didnt try too hard, maybe they were frustrated or really they ent that good. But whatever it is if the players had a lil more belief the outcome mighta be better.
Hart tactics were spot on...is d players were poor in execution.
A goal changes a game and had Kenwyne put that one in early, it woulda give the team a lift.
We need more games like this as Big Mag said...but look at how this side has improved...they also follow instructions and are more disciplined than before, which is refreshing.
We going in the right direction, have patience.

Is Argentina, everybody want to play.. Because most of our important games, we will need exactly what KJ can bring, more than one of our (beep beep) roadrunner guys. So he paid him some respect, and probably would have made a half change, and then goal 1 happened. So now he went to steal one back early in 2nd, didn't happenm 2nd goal....ok..let's give as many we can a lil reward for the hardwork, and feeling for the bright lights. JJ having problems with bright lights doh.

there is nothing special about JJ, molino shows a lot more promise... guerra played decent but the bow kill my respect for him... jones didn't play well and i felt like the team was flat footed... i didn't see the energy and push in the 2nd half... KJ get the bligh but he didn't impress... cyrus missed on a great opportunity to show the world something... wasn't impressed with hyland this game... was never really impressed with him to be honest... i haven't seen iran, so it's hard to say how to approach them.. SH did his best but the players let him down bc of the hero worship.. had they approached the game like a wcq and an opp to show the world how good they are, it would have been different.
mentally their minds were in the wrong place and it affected their game... they let themselves down but they probably don't even realize it..

their mentality changed the game and that was evident in the end result... done with the hero worship and star gazing... trini players need to have some damn pride and self confidence... shake the man hand and say a few words.. wish him the best... but during the game play him like any other player and play to win...
mentally they were not ready and SH tried his best... he can't transform their minds in such a short space... in order to be a winner you need to think like one... being mentally weak and feeling inferior to your opponent is not the mindset that promotes success

What did you all want from this game? I am bemused by some of the rants pre-game, game and post-game. Do you all really expect players to go from our PFL and go toe to toe with the best in the world who has been/is preparing to make a run to the WC finals? Seriously. You expect Molino to run past Mascherano or for Joevin Jones to lock down Messi or Lavezzi all game.
simple expectations... run hard, don't bow and go in to win... after watching the match the players did not execute the coaches plan.. they get star struck... with a bunch of players who equal with them... the mind is the most powerful tool...

individually dotish messi is a more experienced and better player but football is a team effort... we not talking individual batting records in cricket and even the player is better in skill doesn't mean a lesser skilled player with heart and the mental fortitude cannot win the battle.. you really never play team sports .. it shows and even if you did, you would settle for mediocrity..

I understand we have our national pride and would have desperately wanted to do better, but the rubbish people are writing here just kills me. An Argentina 3rd eleven would probably drop 3 on this team. I thought that given the limited talent pool, the large stage, the expectations of the home crowd we did better than the world audience expected. And the fact that this team has not played together for 6 months, it was a creditable performance.
1. With better goal keeping and more frequent competition against top teams, we have a good chance to consistently beat Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Honduras and competing well against the US and Mexico;
2. Argentina is not likely to challenge for the World Cup.
Good job T&T and well done Coach Hart.

If he is our best GK then I am worried for us.
He needs to go abroad and try to get used to big games. But based on that performance I don't see why anyone would want him.

Only shot I remember is Guerra's long-range shot early in the game. I know there were 6 according to stats but that's the only one in my mind :( Jones could have had 2 in that match sadly

where in that report does it factor in self confidence and insecurity? you can list stats based on miles ran and a lot of factors but the mental approach to the game is the biggest factor that cannot be measured in most cases.. patient build up and those factors are related to composure, tactics, strategy and experience as well.. which inevitably goes back to their mental approach to the game.. But having family who actually played for one of those teams at the highest level.. they will tell you this, when we step out to play any team, whether it be brazil or argentina, we are playing to beat them...
if west indies went by population, reputation or size of nation and resources, we would have never dominated world cricket for so long... TT can beat anyone on any given day with the right prep and mental approach...

where did i ever advocate naivety in any of my responses? allyuh men does jump to a set of conclusions and pat yourself on the back when you making no sense..
being confident, and mentally prepared is not the same thing as overconfidence and naivety... interpretation is key when communicating, if you misread someone the english language allows that person to correct their perspective..
football is war, it is chess and is played with high level strategy and a player must be mentally prepared whether he is great or not..a great skillful player who is not mentally prepared will lose to a lesser skilled player who is mentally and psychologically prepared.. not to say our players are not skillful enough, because they are and haven't been given chances like this before or on a regular basis..

but i forget some men feel we is shithongs... so it makes me wonder, why are we even playing world football? we just making up numbers? whipping boys and the practice team for the rest of the world... we shouldn't strive to be the best and beat the best bc it's unrealistic.. once again, what is the point of competing when your destiny is already determined by your fellow countrymen?
why even talk about being psychologically prepared, it is useless bc the current players, according to some of these so called football geniuses we out of it from the beginning, so be happy you can bow to the opposition player and if you get that privilege kiss his foot too..

FOOTBALL fanatic and Argentina ambassador to T&T Marcelo Suarez Salvia is still celebrating his country's 2022 FIFA World Cup title. Argentina defeated France in a thrilling final, on penalty kicks, four months ago in Qatar.
After attending a few TT Premier Football League games and watching the Soca Warriors, Suarez is convinced that T&T has the individual talent to be a force on the international stage.
Suarez is a native of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina where football is lived with a passion that is different from the rest of the world.
“Soccer in Argentina is a sport that is experienced from a very early age. Children from an early age use any round object to kick. Soccer is a social tool that serves to bring the family together when their team plays.
"A club awakens passions. The adherence of an Argentine to his team is incomparable. We can change countries, partners, jobs but not support (of) our team,” Suarez told Newsday, as he stressed the connection Argentinians have with football.
“Every four years, we Argentines forget about social and economic problems and turn to the colours of the country to support our national team,” said Suarez.
He believes his country was blessed because since 1978 when they won their first World Cup, they have had some of the best players in the world, although with moments of glory and disappointment.
“We had (Diego) Maradona who took us to the 1986 title, then always with very good players who took us to the World Cup finals and the Copa América with the expectation of being champion, and the final frustration of not achieving it.
"For the Argentine people, a second place does not fill us. Being champions again in a World Cup as special as the one in Qatar brought a lot of joy, but the most important thing is that our children were able to experience the emotion that winning a World Cup arouses. It took more than 30 years and many young people had not experienced it.”
Suarez said he enjoyed the support the T&T public had for Argentina in Qatar.
"In fact, Argentina had two Trinidadian fans from the zero minute of the World Cup, the chancellor (Foreign Affairs Minister) Amery Browne and the mayor of Port of Spain Joel Martínez who always believed that Argentina could win the cup, and that's how it was. It's very nice to see how people from other countries add to the same sports and social cause of our nation."
A fan of Club Ferro from his native Argentina, whose green colours he keeps in his office, Suarez has attended the revamped TT Premier Football League and has already become a fan of one team in particular: W Connection FC, who wear the green colours that filled him with memories and joys of back home.
Suarez was invited to a game by the TT Premier Football League and gleefully accepted.
"I went with the joy of knowing that soccer was returning to TT after three years, and as a soccer lover to be present and (support) the Trinidadian soccer association (TT Football Association) in the rebirth of local professional soccer," Suarez said.
“There have been three years of absence from elite soccer in T&T. Precisely the time without official competitions and reopening with a new league proposal generates expectations.”
An avid football fan starved of live matches, Suarez has already attended a handful of Premier League games.
He believes more support for the game is needed.
"Soccer is a sport that, in addition to its social implications, is also financially strong in terms of expenses and investments, and seeing the lack of sponsors and advertising in those first matches intrigues me as to how these clubs will maintain themselves and that the league ends up being a success."
He said publicity is crucial.
"In Argentina, any minimal product or article that can be taken advantage of has local, national or foreign sponsors and that helps the growth of the league, as well as of the clubs and players and that ends in the growth of the national team,"
He said clubs and leaders must recognise that the sport fulfils a social function through providing an avenue for young people to stay away from drugs and crime.
After watching the games, Suarez has made a few observations on the state of local football.
He said T&T has very talented individuals and teams that work very well at certain times, but are not consistent.
"Everything is the result of hard work; I think it can be improved because I see that there is talent and interest in improving."
He believes T&T has the personnel resources to be very competitive.
"The potential is there. I met (St Martin-born) Kaile Auvray who is a Trinidadian-French who decided to play for T&T, so I think you can do a lot of positive things with what you have." Auvray has been a bright spark for TT in midfield with his dribbling and passing.
Suarez believes there must be a little more professionalism, and players must dedicate themselves 100 per cent to the sport.
Suarez remembers moments in history when Argentine teams played against Trinidadians.
"Thirty-five years ago Argentinos Jr and Defence Force played for the Américas Cup and it was here in T&T. Then a friendly between the two teams in 2014 in Buenos Aires with (Lionel) Messi even as Argentine captain," recalls Suarez.
However, being able to have the Argentine team playing a friendly in T&T seems like a utopia that depends on many factors.
"There are many things that influence, but it is not impossible."
Suarez believes the T&T public can support local football by encouraging the national team, always being informed of the matches and players, and generally getting more involved. He said this would make the players, coaches and managers feel important and from there they will believe they can reach the highest level.
"Even in women's soccer, T&T can be a power at the regional level. T&T, like most of the Caribbean islands, are competitive in athletics and it means the physical conditions for the local soccer player are there, you just have to exploit them," said Suarez.
