I does say the same thing every year. But is true every year. These "pan tunes" are boring and monotonous.

The name of the tune is Excitement? really? this is elevator music.

Please post any videos and reports of the Steelbands getting ready and recordings of live competition performances in this thread, thanks.

Will Phase II manage to defend their crown successfully this year?
Will Despers or Renegades make a come back into the limelight after a number of years outside of the top 3? Or will one of my South bands finally be judged fairly and upset the tired North bands domination of Panorama this year?  :devil:

All that and more is to be posted in this thread, many thanks.

No sweat leh meh call it now in ' tongue and cheek ' fashion. South band done get thief as this is strictly ah set ah north band bias. All stars will be up dey then the  GAY Despers  and Rxodus. As far as I concern the winners picked already.

My south bands FOnclaire Hatters and all ah then could beat as much as they want the judges done have it in The bag for ah north  band.

Stueps!!!!  The only true winner of Panorama from South was Hatters in 1975. Fonclaire came close in the late 80s and early 90s, but thats it.

Is a real long time I have not heard someone say Gay Desperadoes. As far as the south bands go they have fallen behind the North and East bands. Tell me the last time a South band was a true contender? Fonclaire in 86,89,90,91 and 92. Since then what South band has even come close to a top three performance? Philmore  for me does a better job with Sound Specialist than with Fonclaire. Skiffle has an outside chance with Ray and that nice song The Wedding. After that what is South saying? As far as making it to the final I am looking for Seon Gomez to bring Harmonites back to the big stage. Two Bands that might fall back this year are Silver Stars and Sound Setters because they are both coming with unproven Arrangers. As far as the contenders it is to early to tell because we have not heard a note of pan yet.

Ray Funk and Andrew Martin (T&T Guardian)

The history of steelpan as chronicled in Trinidad newspapers is now only a click away. As a result of a grant from UWI and collaboration between students at UWI and the UWI library, more than 4,000 newspaper articles related to the history of steelpan in T&T will be uploaded to the Web.
 
Many articles can already be viewed now with more being added in the next several months.
 
The project is the brainchild of steelpan historian and arranger Dr Jeannine Remy, senior lecturer in the Department of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA) at UWI, St Augustine.
 
“Since my first visit to Trinidad in 1989, I did my doctoral research in this same library. Even then I was worried about their preservation. I copied the quota I was allowed never thinking I would actually be part of their preservation some 25 years later.”
 
Every second semester for the past eight years Remy has taught a course in steelpan history UWI, St. Augustine. The course teaches skills in primary source research and requires students to conduct oral history interviews with pan pioneers and comb through Trinidadian newspaper sources spanning back more than 60 years.
 
“I realised the value of teaching the students about the state of the sources available on the topic of the steelpan as our national instrument,” Remy noted. “I never dreamed that I would come back to Trinidad to teach the topic I was so interested in researching. As a foreigner appreciative of Trinidad’s national treasure, I knew that one of my goals in life would be to help organise these precious documents, give back to the culture and make the documents available for researchers around the world to enjoy.”
 
Each year Remy’s students are trained by Special Collections Librarian Lorraine Nero in using the newspaper clipping files and microfilm of Trinidadian newspapers at the UWI library—especially those documents held in the West Indiana Collection.
 
Students are taught not just to locate these materials but to analyse the content and create bibliographic entries on these sources. The fragile condition of the older clippings and the need to get quicker digital access caused Remy to think about preservation. Her solution was creating a digital database of all the articles and have it available not just to students but to the public.
 
The process of digitising historic documents is common practice in libraries around the world. Indeed, UWI’s library had already digitised a number of smaller special collections available such as carnival costume designs and photographs from celebrated designer Carlyle Chang’s collection and the Goldberg collection of early postcards of Caribbean life.
 
In 2011, Remy approached the UWI library with her plan to digitise the documents and create a database and they agreed that something had to be done in order to preserve the information. However, the library did not have the financial budget to fund such an ambitious project. Both parties agreed to work together seeking an outside grant and as a result, Remy sought and was awarded a faculty research grant to complete the project in December 2012.
 
Since the project’s start, Remy has worked closely with the Special Collections staff at the UWI library and her students to archive and digitise the material.
 
The tedious work requires scanning the articles, create and catalog a metadata form which includes a summary and keywords for each article to make it searchable, and link all this information to the UWI library Web site.
 
Librarian Marsha Winter supervises the work from the library side while Remy supervises it from the faculty side.
 
The primary student research assistant for the project is Aniya Carty who is thrilled for the opportunity to work on the project.
 
“I felt privileged being the one and working on this project helped bring everything that I learnt in class to life. Through this project, I learnt to appreciate my culture, it is one of a kind! What is amazing is that the history continues as the steelpan continues to develop even today.”
 
The project is ongoing as each article must pass quality checks before it is uploaded and made accessible to the public. The aim of project co-ordinators is to upload more than 1,000 articles to the Web in the next few months. The articles can be accessed by going to the collection itself at the UWI Web site http://uwispace.sta.uwi.edu/dspace/handle/2139/17577 (http://uwispace.sta.uwi.edu/dspace/handle/2139/17577).
 
Interestingly, the articles are also searchable by major online search engines like Google and Bing. One need only enter in the search terms you want to use and add “uwispace” to limit the search to the UWI digital Steelpan Newspaper Collection. In addition to the articles from the UWI library collection, the UWI digital Steelpan Newspaper Collection included articles gifted from Remy’s personal collection as well as those of a number of her students and colleagues.
 
“Almost every day it seems, Dr Anne Osborne is bringing me a new clipping,” Remy said.
 
Going forward, her plan is for current and future students to continue working on the project and expanding the collection.
 
Remy is excited for people to try the UWI digital Steelpan Newspaper Collection and check out what is up on the Web so far.
 
“The history of steelpan is complex and making these newspaper clippings easily available will help scholars, students and pan jumbies the world over get the first-hand reports from Trinidad newspapers to help understand Trinidad’s national instrument and how the music of pan has evolved.
 
“I am delighted that I got this research grant because it offers a real service, making readily available much that was not.”
 
One scholar who has started to look at these online clippings and is excited about the collection is pan player extraordinaire Mia Gormandy. After earning her masters degree in music at Northern Illinois University, this All Stars steelband veteran is now a PhD candidate in ethnomusicology at Florida State University where she is planning a dissertation on pan in Japan.
 
“This resource is invaluable not only to graduate students doing research on steelpan, but to undergraduates, professors, or anyone interested in learning more about the steelpan. To have such a resource readily available not only provides supporting evidence for any steelpan research topic, but also draws new perspective on history, which may sought to answer new questions about our steelpan fraternity. I applaud Dr Remy for taking the time to put this together as it is and will continue to be an important resource for steelpannists, especially in the world of academia.”

Pan Splash fails to attract

IT may have been an ambitious try by PanTrinbago to attract “younger” pan enthusiasts, but the pan body’s Pan Spash pool initiative failed to attract patrons of any age at the National Panorama Semi-Finals at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, yesterday.

Apart from a handful of persons who purchased the $700 ticket to splash in the 70 foot inflatable pool, there were mostly security guards and lifeguards in the enclosed area up to late yesterday.

Even the better organised, enclosed ‘Greens’ area seemed to not have attracted much of the pan party-goers.

Massive television screens and large speakers were strategically placed throughout the “Greens” to allow the pan party-goers to still take in the pan.

Instead, pan enthusiasts appeared to have chosen to enjoy the ‘Savannah party’ in the North Stand, which up to late last night appeared to be packed to capacity.

President Anthony Carmona and his entourage were also given their own section in the popular party stand.

The North Stand filled up first. Pan ‘posses’ could be differentiated by the colour of their t-shirts.

There was every colour imaginable from lime green to blue, white, pink and red.

Rhythm sections kept the crowd entertained between the performances of each competing steel orchestra and on some occasions appeared to have gotten carried away as they were hampering some steel bands.

In the Grand Stand the crowd was sedate, with patrons enjoying the music of the competing steelbands.

Vendors around the Queen’s Park Savannah said business picked up for them late in the day, and late into the evening some patrons were complaining of the long wait to get into the Savannah.

‘Noise’ from North Stand disrupts large bands

NOISY festivities from both the North Stand and the now infamous “Greens” yesterday resulted in complaints that they were hindering the Panorama semi-finals which was well underway at the Queen’s Park Savannah last night.

The problem appears to have started at the very start of the semi-final for the large steel-band category when the first band due to take the stage, Invaders, was about to perform at about 5.05pm.

The Tragerete Road, Woodbrook band, was all set to play its arrangement of Roland “Rembunction” Yearwood’s “Jam It” when things seemed to turn sour. A dull, low, but clearly audible thudding sound could be heard.

An MC at the competition said the band was ready to start but noisy tassa from the North Stand was hindering this. However, after patrons informed the MC that the noise was actually the bass from the music being played at the Greens – to the West – the MC corrected this.

“Forgive us North Stand,” he said. “The sound is actually coming from the Greens. We’ll just wait for that to calm down.” They had to wait for about three minutes. Valley Harps went on to bring the house down, earning loud cheers from both the Grand Stand and the North Stand for their rendition of Michelle Huggins-Watts’ arrangement of the popular soca Happiest Man Alive by Machel Montano.

However, when the second band, Tropical Angel Harps, came on and began its performance of Winston “De Fosto” Scarborough’s “In De Minor”, the same noise could be heard. The band played on, and there was no remark from the MC.

But as the sun began to set and the revelry began to reach new highs at the North Stand, there was once more a call for order.

Desperados was due to perform at 6pm when they too were asked to wait until the noise – this time identified as tassa drumming from the North Stand – dissipated. The MC asked the North Stand to tone it down. It wasn’t clear that this was going to happen and so the show went on. Despers went on to perform for 7 minutes and 35 seconds, earning plaudits for Superblue’s “Spankin”.

The North Stand was yesterday packed, almost to capacity. Even President Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona turned up with his security detail (Minister of National Security Gary Griffith was spotted behind the stand at one point). There was tassa, and patrons enjoyed music played by the DJ between performances. A sign that the ruction was getting heavy came when the North Stand almost exploded after the Valley Harps, from Morne Coco Road, Petit Valley, took to the stage at the end of the medium-steelband category.

Over at the Greens, which was a good distance to the west of the North Stand and Grand Stand, there was a high degree of activity. Though the much discussed pool party seemed to have not made a splash (at about 4 pm patrons said the pool was still empty), young people came in droves. There were different sections with different sponsors, playing their own music. Somewhere in between the crowd were monitors playing pan. But the vibe was, in fact, more akin to a big fete married with a beach-party.

However, there was a major hitch at the entrance point, with only one set of gates being used for both entrance and exit of patrons. Persons wanting to exit were, at one stage, asked to wait, provoking cries of, “what? This is prison?” Tickets with barcodes had to be scanned and photographs of each patron were also uploaded upon both entry and exit.

There were hundreds of “scalpers” on the outskirts of the event at the Savannah, offering last minute tickets to anyone who happened to be walking in. As expected, things were relatively sedate in the Grand Stand, with many taking in the music, seated in their chairs wearing caps and visors.

Efforts to contact PanTrinbago president Keith Diaz last night were unsuccessful. When the Greens was first introduced a few years ago, there were complaints that noise from the event was interrupting the Panorama competition. In later years, however, organisers said they had worked out how to rectify the problem.

I need your help in leading me to towards my dream, if you can. I don't know what to do. I'm so far away from my birth place. How can i get to play or tryout or something torwards playing for my National team?

“Pan Splash” was a success and will be back in 2015!

This, yesterday from Michelle George, official spokesperson for the entities behind the concept area (Jus Juices, Aqua Fun Park and the Blue Waters Group of Companies), which was introduced as part of “The Greens” section during the National Panorama Semi-Finals on Sunday at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

The competition saw 14 medium bands and 15 large bands performing before thousands of fans in the competition which is organised by Pan Trinbago. The move to have the “Pan Splash” which was reported exclusively in last Thursday’s Express, was heavily criticised by steelband arrangers as having nothing to do with pan and as being disrespectful to the national instrument.

Contacted by the Express yesterday, George said despite the negative publicity and public controversy surrounding the initiative, the organisers were encouraged by the interest shown and had already indicated their willingness to return with the initiative next year. She said:

“We suffered from a lot of bad publicity, which I think is more about the way some people feel about the phenomenon that is The Greens itself —and not necessarily the pool or the Pan Splash idea.

“However, based on the amount of interest, curiosity and questions that were generated, I have already been advised that all things being equal on the business and logistics end, Pan Splash will definitely be returning in 2015...and for the record, we broke even! We knew what we were getting into before hand and what numbers we needed in order to avoid a loss and we’re happy to have achieved our objectives safely and successfully.”

George expressed the belief that once the “novelty” of the initiative was gone, by next Panorama, the real issues would be addressed by all the detractors. She said:

“I think a lot of people used the pool as a forum to gripe about The Greens. We understood that coming into this and we took our licks, but to them I say: ‘What are you going to gripe about next year?’ We stood up bravely and took our blows, whilst people hid behind their issues and used the pool to create a bacchanal. Next year, you will have to find something else to hide behind though because this won’t be a novelty anymore.”

George thanked Pan Trinbago and all the relevant authorities for their support throughout the day and said the organisers remain “undaunted” after achieving a “standard that was unparalleled”.

“In spite of all the negative chatter and assumptions, we were able to deliver on everything that was promised our patrons and the only people using the pool yesterday were those willing to function under the rules and regulations. Many people wanted to use the facility but were unwilling to remove their make-up and lime gear etc., so they had to be denied access to the pool. We were very clear about the rules upfront and we stood by them throughout the day. Many children came and were allowed to swim for free and the only logistics issues we encountered were those that were beyond our immediate control.”
George added that live entertainment had also been provided as promised and said that area served as an additional source of interest to many patrons and visitors on the day. She said:

“We had performances from Rhapsody, K Rich, Preedy, Denise Belfon and a newcomer who asked to grace the stage on the day—Sharada—and she was quite good. The Attorney General came and spent a bit of time. Minister Bharath came and took photos with people and was very complimentary to our organisation. Dr Tim Gopeesingh as well... Lots of people were curious and came in… Machel came but did not perform because he had other obligations and ran out of time, but nevertheless, he still took pictures and signed autographs for his fans. Overall I’m proud of the product and even under pressure it was not compromised in anyway. Everything that was under our control, we provided. On behalf of the organisers, we must thank Pan Trinbago and Mr Serette, as well as Lyle and AMCO for supporting the initiative and working with us to ensure that everything ran smoothly.”
 
Speaking with the Express at about 10 p.m. on Sunday, Pan Trinbago’s vice-president Byron Serrette said, “I feel The Greens was successful, yes, Pan Splash was not well patronised but it was an experiment.
“I feel the bigger disrespect to pan was on a day when all this music was performed on stage, the media chose to focus on a pool.

“What was I to do with the thousands of young people who came to the Greens? The North Stand has its 9,000, the Grand Stand has its 3,000 and the Drag was filled to capacity. I created a space for them to be a part of the Savannah Party. Pan Trinbago will continue to strive to make the Panorama a better and safer event as time goes by,” Serrette said.

Pan Trinbago president Keith Diaz  said he was happy with the competition Sunday at the Savannah. “I am quite happy with how it turned out. We were finished by 11 p.m. I have no concerns coming out of Sunday’s event. A review will be discussed at our executive meeting. I want to thank the bands for their cooperation and effort,” Diaz said.

Diaz, however, declined to comment on the new Pan Splash all-inclusive section of The Greens.

Drummer ditches Starlift

A member of the White Oak Starlift Steel Orchestra is claiming the band did not make it into the Panorama finals because they were set-up by their drummer last Sunday at the semi-finals.

Delano Arthur Seale, a member of the band for the past 51 years, said the drummer who they hired and paid did not show-up for the large band competition at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain.

He said the drummer worked with the band each time for practice and played until the wee hours of the morning the day before the competition.

On the day, Seale said the band was prepping to play their rendition of Machel Montano’s “Happiest Man Alive” when they noticed the drummer had not arrived. He said a member of the band contacted the drummer and he assured him that he was on his way but he never showed up. The managers of the team were forced to make a last minute decision and placed the iron man in the drummer’s seat.

“That killed our chances, so we are now out the competition and the players and everyone in the band are not very happy right now,” he said.

An emergency meeting was held last night to address what happened on Sunday with members of the band. “I could imagine how the players are feeling right now. This will be the first time in four years we have not been in the finals and we knew we were sounding great this year.

“We knew this was our year the band would come and upset everybody and now this happened,” he said. “When we thinking we coming back strong, everything just come crashing down and it is really unfortunate.”

De finals was in South for several years and North bands STILL buss South bands tail.

It eh no bias against South bands.  They simply not good enough....especially for the past 10 years or so.

What you might not know is that a number of south players does play in north bands.  Some of the absolute best players in the land from South.  When I was playin regular.....yuh didn't want nutting wit south men.  Darren Sheppard, Ifill, Wentworth Richardson, Leon "Foster" Thomas (who is now Phase II drummer and a premier pannist in his own right) etc.  Bad Bad pan players.  And Fonclaire was HAPPENIN dem times.

Sadly....Fonclaire eh happenin anymore.

North bands may win Panorama.....but many of them have plenty players from south.  Some of the best tuners....Birch....Gay etc from South.  You might want to ask yuhself why South tuners does be having North bands soundin so much better than South bands.  :)

Time to get over that victim complex sah.  When a south band good enough...it will win.  The ONE year in relatively recent times  that yuh could say a South band get teef was Fonclaire with Pan By Storm.  But fuh each one a those....North bands could claim multiple times they get rob.

So it go.  All de bess to de bands this Panorama.

It was a tough decision for the judges in the 2014 National Schools Panorama Finals at the Queen’s Park Savannah, yesterday. Bands in all categories played their hearts out to get the judges’ nod. However, there were the exceptional few.

St Paul’s Anglican School scored 264 points, beating 11 other schools in the primary schools category. Their selection was Soca Baptist sung by Austin “SuperBlue” Lyons and it was their first time in the competition. Principal Marlene White said she knew the school would do well as the students practised very hard, but admitted winning was an unexpected shock. “We are elated…lost for words but definitely happy,” she said.

St Mary’s Government Primary took second place with 257 points playing Magic Drum, composed by Len “Boogsie” Sharpe, arranged by Aquill Arrindel and sung by Machel Montano. Defending champions, St Margaret Boys RC, who previously won the title nine times, had to settle for third place, scoring 256 points with Differentology by Ian “Bunji Garlin” Alvarez.

The excitement continued in the secondary schools category with high-quality performances from the Providence Girl/QRC steelband, Bishops Anstey East/Trinity East and Symphony Saints, a combined effort of St Joseph Convent Port-of-Spain and St Mary’s College and St Francois Girls College, the only all-female band to have won the competition three times previously. Providence/QRC won with 266 points and members celebrated by shouting “We beat Francois.” They played Pan In Danger by the late Merchant.

In second place was St Charles High School with Champions, composed by Carlon “Chucky” Harewood, while Symphony of Saints placed third with Trini by Rodney “Benji” Le Blanc.

In the non-school category BP Renegades won with Happiest Man Alive by Machel Montano, scoring 277 points. Invaders Youth Steel Orchestra were second with a 267 points playing Flag Party by Austin “Super Blue” Lyons. And St Margaret’s Boys Steel Orchestra took third position with a score of 262 points with their selection More Love, by Len “Boogsie” Sharpe.

This year’s competition was in honour of Salmon Cupid and the late Ian “Teddy” Belgrave. Cupid is the inventor of the E-pan, the world’s first electronic synthesised steel pan. Belgrave was instrumental in forming the Pan in Schools Co-ordinating Council (PSCC) in 1999. Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism Dr Lincoln Douglas said each year the competition proves that the nation’s national instrument is in good hands. He said the ministry would consider financial incentives to encourage young arrangers.

Three days ago, the minister said the same would be done for any young person who designs and makes their own costume for kiddies carnival.

the same one or two pan tunes were being played sometimes by three or four bands in the finals for a few years. So Pantrinbago decided to allow older tunes to be played to add some variety to the songs available for bands to choose from.

Steelbands will have two (2) events in which to display their musical skills come Carnival Monday evening.

One, is the second edition of the Groovy Soca Steelband Competition in all Pan Trinbago Regions and the other, Health & Fitness Chip in Port of Spain.

The Groovy Soca Steelband Competition is open to all financial members of Pan Trinbago and will see participating steelbands perform any groovy soca composition. Bands are required to play the tune on the move for approximately four (4) to six (6) minutes.

There are several judging points. In the North at Victoria Square, Park Street, Port of Spain, East  Hollis Avenue, Arima, South on the Coffee, San Fernando, and Tobago along the Esplanade, Scarborough, Tobago. Adjudicators will be selected by the respective regions.

Cash prizes (approximately $200,000. per region) are sponsored by the Office of the Prime Minister, The Ministry of The Arts &Multiculturalism and the National Carnival Commission.  Registration is at the venues on the day of the competition.

The “Health & Fitness Chip” is an initiative under the aegis of The Ministry of Health, through its Fight the Fat Campaign for Carnival 2014. The non-competitive event will take the form of a steelband parade from Tragerate Road to Adam Smith Square, Ariapita Avenue, Port of Spain.

Scheduled to begin at 6:30pm and end at 1:00 am, the bands will proceed from Colville Street heading west on Tragerate Road. At Adam Smith Square, bands will stop and play a tune of choice before moving along.  A total of 35 bands are expected to participate. Each band will receive an appearance fee.

“Chippers” will include the general public and other Health & Fitness “buffs” who will be encouraged to align themselves with their favorite steelband and chip the night away.

Carnival Monday Night Fitness Chippin is supported by the Woodbrook/St.James Community Association, National Carnival Commission and Pan Trinbago Inc.

Yeah best Panorama in years for real. Only slight glitch with the results is that I would have placed Renegades 2nd rather than 3rd.

Palos, for me all the arrangers have a sameness about their arrangement I can say the same of Phase II , Despers , Fonclaire etc...

I would have placed All Stars 1. Phase II 2. Renegades 3. Skiffle 4. and Despers 5. The first three could have gone anyways thou.

George Goddard remembered With Carnival now completed, dusted off and put away, De Fosto’s calypso Pan in the Atmosphere came to life last weekend with much activity by the national instrument. Pan Trinbago staged another successful Champs in Steel Plus (Champs in Concert) last Saturday at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of- Spain. From very early the venue was filled with visitors from overseas, many eager to see and hear the season’s champions of pan, calypso and mas. They were not to be disappointed.
 
This is the 33rd year that Pan Trinbago is staging this production, one which has the distinction of one of the very few cultural events staged locally to begin at its advertised scheduled time of starting.
 
This year was no different as promptly on the stroke of 8 pm, with flagman HP Diaz, HBM standing rigidly holding the national flag aloft, young pan players from Junior Panorama (Primary Schools) champion band St Paul’s Anglican School played the national anthem on tenors. After an innovocation by Urslin Blackette, radio personalities Ken Simmons and Sharon Pitt got proceedings on the way by introducing St Paul’s Anglican School, the night’s first act, to play Blue Boy’s Soca Baptist.
 
Apart from St Paul’s, eight 2014 champion steelbands performed on the night, including Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove, Pan Elders, Super Novas, San Juan East Side Symphony, Pan Jammers, Juniors bp Renegades and Providence/QRC. Winners of the Text to Win People’s Choice competition—Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille and Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars—also made guest appearances. This year’s production featured some of the finest exponents of mas, calypso and chutney soca on one stage providing a fitting end to this year’s festival.
 
These included senior and junior King and Queen of Carnival, inclusive of Quars Al Sahara Desert Sting (Wade Madray); Zamara Mirage of the Oasis (Peola Marchan); Promise of the Rainbow (Gyasi Philbert); and, Angel of the Buccoo (Cyan Lue Shue), as well as the “most outstanding mas presentation of 2014,” including presentations by Red Cross/Downtown Carnival Junior Band of the Year Rosalind Gabriel’s Colour My Culture and Junior Carnival Band of the Year Carnival Babies’ Colour Me Carnival.
 
Also making the playbill were some of the season’s hottest champs and contenders including the National Calypso Monarch Roderick “Chucky” Gordon; Political Commentary winner Mr Shak; Young King Monarch Bevon St Clair; Calypso Queen Candace Robinson; Junior Calypso Monarch Ronaldo London; Junior Soca Monarch Sasha-Ann Moses; Extempore Monarch Brian London and runner-up Lingo; Chutney Soca Monarch Kris “KI ”Persad; and, International Soca Monarch runners-up Farmer Nappy and Iwer.
 
Kelly Green & Harmony provided musical accompaniment.
 
Pan action actually commenced from as early as Friday when Panicle Company hosted the inaugural edition of the George Sonny Goddard Town Hall Meetings, at Starlift Complex, off Mucurapo Road, Woodbrook. The late Goddard was the president of the National Association of T&T Steelbandsmen (NATTS) and Pan Trinbago.
 
Facilitators of the discussions included George David Goddard, his brother George Gerard and Emile Borde. Among the experts and intellectuals moderating proceedings were Hugh Borde, Royce Russell, Dr Brian Copeland, Dr Kim Johnson, Diane Duprey, Keith Maynard and Vanessa Headley.
 
The event was attended by a number of pan players and afficionados, including Martin Daly, Ray Funk, Bertel Gittens, Roderick Toussaint, Tommy Critchlow, Steve Taylor, Douglas Williams, Gerard Clarke and Emmon Berkeley.
 
Throughout the day, discussions were intense and poignant. Some of the topics addressed included Defining the Steelband Movement and the Politics of Pan and How we balance steelband tradition with innovation in the 21st Century.
 
Supposedly a five-panel event just three were completed, causing the organisers to make this exercise and ongoing, year-round forum.
 
 
When an article by Trinidad born Indra Dwarka-Koch in November, 2013 about the launching of Carnival in the town of Niedernhausen in Germany was published, no one realised what a wave of sensation it would create.
 
The Carnival Council of Eleven was so impressed that they invited Koch to be guest of honour at its Carnival Gala at the town Entertainment Centre, held on February 1. At this Carnival Gala the T&T Guardian was praised by the committee’s president, Martin Kunst, for putting Niedernhausen on the other side of the world. The committee president himself has fond memories of being in Trinidad with his parents as a child.
 
The Carnival Council usually consists of a group of 11 men from the town, mainly professionals ranging from doctors, lawyers, businessmen and trades people. This institution started in the 19th century with its roots going back to France. In this mainly male-dictating world, the council plans events and social functions for carnival and the local charities.
 
At the Entertainment Centre, artists of various genres brought the festival of over 500 masqueraders to a hilarious peak. The later the evening the higher the spirits soared, and the more excited the crowd became. Whether it was the ventriloquist with his dinosaur, a play back Elvis Presley, local sports group performing their acrobatic skills, Brazilian rhythm dancers or even the bitter satire of both local and international politics, the audience got the best of Niedernhausen showbiz.
 
Even the new young and dynamic Mayor of the town of Niedernhausen, Joachim Reimann, took time off to accept an original clipping of the T&T Guardian’s article “Launching of German Carnival Season” from Koch. This shows the appreciation of conveying the German culture to the people of T&T.
 
The Council of Eleven and the Mayor of the Town of Niedernhausen profusely thanked the T&T Guardian for the publication and exposure, with some of them hoping to be in Trinidad to actually experience Carnival 2015.

It is a month since this year’s Carnival weekend yet still excitement continues in the steelband world. Pan Trinbago has a lot of events planned for the remainder of this year and 2015, with the most ambitious being the staging of the first-ever international Panorama contest next year.
 
Pan Trinbago launched the logo for the International Conference and Panorama (ICP) last Wednesday at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (Napa), Port-of-Spain. Heading the list of dignitaries at the formal function were President Anthony Carmona; Arts and Multiculturalism Minister Dr Lincoln Douglas; Speaker Wade Mark; Caricom Ambassador Sir Edwin Carrington; and, UWI Pro-Vice Chancellor/principal Prof Clement Sankat.

The ICP logo is designed by 28-year-old Chevon Le Gendre, assisted by Kalesh Forde.
 
The intent of the ICP, tentatively scheduled for August 15, is to establish T&T as the mecca of pan and Panorama.
 
The central image of the logo is a steelpan, surrounded by the flags of countries to be invited. Among the expected invitees are bands from the USA, UK, Canada, Nigeria, Israel, Australia and every pan-playing nation of the Caribbean.
 
Some of the rules of the competition are that just one arranger will be permitted per band, and no musician can play for two bands. Bands will also be limited to 60 players.
 
Performers at Napa on Wednesday night included 2014 National Panorama champion Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove, Schools Panorama winner QRC/Providence, Earl Brooks and calypsonian Eunice Peters singing Anthem for Pan.
 
In his feature address Douglas said: “Pan Trinbago has been handed a very serious responsibility...to nurture and develop a creation that came from the belly of the people. With this responsibility, though, comes a high expectation.
 
“To compete effectively, our brand of steelpan must be supported by the type of leadership that embraces the current realities and reads the market to predict changes.
 
“While the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism and, by extension, the Government, is in support of all the efforts of Pan Trinbago to increase the income derived from the steelpan industry, I must insist on the continued demonstration of higher goals and deliverables for the national instrument.”
 
He continued: “And so, this is my challenge to Pan Trinbago. Make this the important and ingenious initiative that you have created, this ICP the benchmark, the ultimate event for the international steelpan market.”
 
However, before finalising the groundwork for the international competition, Pan Trinbago resumes its Pan in De Countryside series of concerts tomorrow in Grande Riviere, at 3 pm.
 
Steelbands invited include Supernovas, Carib Woodbrook Playboyz, Sangre Grande Cordettes, Pan Stereonettes, Southern Marines Steelband Foundation and City Sun Valley, plus DJ KC Klass is Class. Pan Trinbago has organised a shuttle service from its Park Street headquarters, from 9 am. The shuttle fee is $200.

 
Eight of Hearts coming in May
 
The other blue riband steelband event taking place shortly is the Eight of Hearts concert in May.
 
This biennial event, held for the past eight years by Laventille Steelband Festival Foundation (LSFF), is being moved from its traditional Laventille base to Napa, Port-of-Spain this year, on May 16-17.
 
Eight of Hearts features the eight top large steel orchestras in the National Panorama final every two years.
 
This year’s top conventional orchestras includes champion Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove, Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars, bpTT Renegades, Witco Desperadoes, Republic Bank Exodus, PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars, Skiffle, CAL Invaders and NLCB Fonclaire.
 
LSFF director Julian Cudjoe said this week: “We’ve done a total evaluation of our product and decided to take it to the next level.
 
“The Eight of Hearts brand needs to evolve; to breathe and grow. I think we have the best steelband concert in the world, one which deserves nothing less than the best. After all, it has the best steelbands and the best patrons and sponsors.
 
The Laventille venue was devoid of the type of infrastructure to befit an event of this stature.
 
Napa is state-of-the-art, especially its backstage amenities, and the only venue in Trinidad to stage a production of this magnitude and importance.”
 

Pan Family concert in the works
 
Another exciting pan event is the inaugural Pan Family concert being planned by Pan Trinbago’s Northern Region.
 
This unique production will showcase the talents of pan musicians and their offspring.
 
Still in its planning stages, artistes to be approached for this unique event include The Codrington Pan Family, led by patriarch Cary Codrington and featuring his daughter, champion soloist Keisha; Dane Gulston and his sons (Denilson and Daniel); Martin Kane, Mighty Sparrow and Black Stalin, and their sons.
 
This week the region’s chairman Gerald Mendes said: “We are experiencing difficulty to secure a venue for this show as all the main concert halls are fully booked. Hopefully, we will get one before the end of the year?”
 
Tentatively scheduled for August 3, the LSFF will be holding the Laventille Steelband Festival for yet another year, along the Eastern Main Road, in Success Village.
 
Approximately four more editions of Pan in De Countryside are to be held nationwide at venues to be decided. Last year, these free, open-air concerts went to districts as remote as Siparia, Moruga and Biche, and Speyside, Tobago.
