The West Indies Cricket Board advised on Saturday that this year’s Regional 4-Day Tournament will begin this coming Friday, February 28, with two matches.
Jamaica will open the season on home soil, when they face Guyana at Sabina Park, five hours later Windward Islands host defending champions Barbados at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St. Lucia in the first of nine day/night matches to be played this season.
Leeward Islands and Combined Campuses & Colleges then start their season the following day at Warner Park in St. Kitts.
This year, the Tournament will see the introduction of a batting and bowling points system in an effort to encourage and incentivise positive play.
Teams will be awarded batting and bowling points for performances in the first 110 overs of each first innings only and retained whatever the result of the match.

Teams in this year’s Regional Four-Day tournament will be battling for two trophies.
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced yesterday that the team accumulating the most points following the seven preliminary round matches will be awarded the WICB President’s Trophy and will qualify as one of four teams for the semi-finals of the tournament to play for the George Headley/Everton Weekes Trophy.
The West Indies first-class championship will begin on Friday with two matches.
Jamaica will open the season on home soil when they face Guyana at Sabina Park, four hours later Windward Islands host defending champions Barbados at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St. Lucia in the first of nine day/night matches to be played this season.
Leeward Islands and Combined Campuses & Colleges start their season the following day at Warner Park in St. Kitts.
This season, the tournament will see the introduction of a batting and bowling points system in an effort to encourage positive play.
Teams will be awarded batting and bowling points for performances in the first 110 overs of each first innings only, and retained whatever the result of the match.
A maximum of five batting points will be awarded based on runs scored by each team as follows:
200 to 249 runs – one point
250 to 299 runs – two points
300 to 349 runs – three points
350 to 399 runs – four points

The West Indies Cricket Board advised yesterday that this year’s Regional 4-Day Tournament will begin on Friday, with two matches. Jamaica will open the season on home soil, when they face Guyana at Sabina Park, five hours later Windward Islands host defending champions Barbados at the Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia in the first of nine day/night matches to be played this season. Leeward Islands and Combined Campuses & Colleges then start their season the following day at Warner Park in St Kitts. The WICB also advised that the teams will be playing for two trophies this year.
The team that accumulates the most points following the seven preliminary round matches will be awarded the WICB President’s Trophy and will qualify as one of four teams for the semi-finals of the tournament to play for the George Headley/Everton Weekes Trophy. Barbados claimed an unprecedented 21st regional first-class title, following an innings and 22 runs victory over long-standing, sporting arch-rivals Trinidad & Tobago with a day-and-a-half remaining in the Final last May on home soil at Kensington Oval.
This year, the Tournament will see the introduction of a batting and bowling points system in an effort to encourage and incentivise positive play. Not Working Coach Williams wants return to 3-day cricket

Trinidad and Tobago coach Kelvin Williams believes a shift from two-day to three-day cricket in the country’s top club competition could benefit the T&T batsmen in their approach to first-class cricket.
Last year, T&T were runners-up to Barbados in the Regional Four-Day tournament, reaching the semi-final as the fourth place team with three wins and three loses before upsetting Jamaica to reach the final.
T&T’s first-class scores in the games they lost last year were 179 and 86 against the Windward Islands in the opening match of the season, 109 and 129 against Barbados and 121 and 192 against Jamaica.
In the final, they were dismissed for 110 and 237 as Barbados won by an innings and 22 runs.
The TTCB’s premier club competition is the National League Premier Division which involves 12 teams playing 11 rounds of two-day games.
Speaking to the Express over the weekend, during the first round of the Premier Division Williams said: “The batting has always been a problem (for T&T). I can’t point my finger at any particular area. Technically the guys are alright. It is just a matter of them trying to concentrate for a long period of time.
“I looked at a couple games yesterday (Saturday) in the Premier Division, which is our top competition and if you look at it, a batsman doesn’t have time to really stay and bat for any long period of time. It is a hustle game. If you play out a maiden over, the next over you want to catch up because of the shortness of a two-day game,” he added.
“The people in charge have to look at it and maybe try and extend it to a three-day competition and that is one way I can think of that we will help the batsmen learn to concentrate for a longer period of time,” Williams said.
For the upcoming first-class season, the T&T coach says he wants players who can spend time at the crease.
The TTCB have organised a final three-day warm-up/trial game bowling off today at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain Couva and Williams wants to see batsmen doing just that.
“I think what we are looking at are players who can bat for a long period of time. Spending time at the crease is very important. Yes you might have a guy who can give you a quick 30 but within the first half hour he is back in the pavilion.
“So we are looking for someone who can bat for sessions and there are a lot of players out there who fit that criteria but it is just for them to get it right in the last preparation match,” he explained.
Speaking about the bowling prospects for the season, Williams says he is expecting “good things” from his fast bowlers, namely Shannon Gabriel and Marlon Richards.
“As far as the bowling is concerned, we have Shannon Gabriel who will be with us, barring injury, and I expect good things from him. He has been bowling well and he is one who is pushing for a Test recall,” the coach said.
“Marlon Richards is another fast bowler from last year who has been doing well. His progress is now being monitored. He has been involved in a bowling programme at the (National Cricket) Centre for three months now, so I expect him to continue to grow from last year,” Williams added.
Asked about the introduction of bonus points in the regional first-class competition, Williams thinks it will give teams an incentive to play more attacking cricket.
“I think it makes for more attractive cricket. It gives the teams an added bonus if they could play attractive cricket as far as putting runs on the board and taking wickets. So you will try to play more attacking cricket,” he added.

Bodoe: Give Sookdeosingh a chance

BALDATH Bodoe, coach of PowerGen Sports Club, is imploring the national selectors to give his left-handed opener Nicholas Sookdeosingh a chance.
Sookdeosingh has been in sensational form on the domestic circuit for over a year as he helped PowerGen capture the National League Premier Division and Twenty20 titles in 2013.
He was at his best over the weekend, slamming a brilliant 150 against Clarke Road United in the first round of the 2014 two-day competition at Wilson Road, Penal.
His efforts weren’t in vain as PowerGen defeated their opponents by five wickets to begin their title defence with a victory.
The 2013 TTCB Premiership Player of the Year is yet to make his debut for the national team, though, despite being arguably one of the top domestic batsmen. “I hope Trinidad and Tobago pick him. He was the only man who made a hundred in the two-day on the weekend. There are trials going on (for the four-day season) and they didn’t call him. Every year he makes a lot of runs and I hope this year he can make the team,” he said.
Commenting on their goals for the season, Bodoe explained that his team is exactly where they need to be to challenge for a trio of domestic honours.
PowerGen have already qualified for the quarter-finals of the Sunday League 50 overs competition and have started their two-day season on a high.
“Every year is a new challenge. We started the Sunday League with an outright win but it’s early days yet. The objective is to defend our two titles. The 50 overs competition has been sort of a bogey tournament for us in the past, we’ve reached the semis and final in the past and lost so we’re trying to fix that,” he said.

Ganga did not retire as captain , he was removed from the position and it was given to Ramdin.
It was not Murray's Administration but Bassarath who made the change .
See that tells how much you know .

Defending West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Four-Day champions Barbados start their title defence today in the first day/night game of the season against the Windward Islands from three p.m. at Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia.
Barbados defeated Trinidad and Tobago in last year’s four-day final and they also defeated the Windwards on their way to the final.
T&T are on a bye for the first round and will open their campaign against the Windwards next Friday at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain.
Previous champions Jamaica are also in action today. They host Guyana at Sabina Park from 11 a.m. (TT time), while the Leeward Islands and the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) face each other in the other round one match, starting tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Rain continues to hold up play in the post-tea session on the opening day of the first round WICB first-class Day/Night match between Barbados and Windward Islands at Beausejour here today.
Barbados, who were sent in, reached 152 for five off 55 overs in their first innings when rain stopped play five minutes before tea.
The not out batsmen were skipper Kraigg Brathwaite on 53 and Carlos Brathwaite, 37.
Kraigg Brathwaite reached his half-century in 216 minutes off 152 balls with four boundaries.

Emrit to lead TT against Windwards

RAYAD EMRIT will lead Trinidad and Tobago in their first 2014 Regional Four Day Tournament match against the Windward Islands at the Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair.
This game will begin on Friday and run until March 10.
The Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) announced a 13-member team and they emphasised, “Rayad Emrit will lead the team due to the absence of our Four Day captain Denesh Ramdin.”
Ramdin will be with the West Indies cricket team that weekend, for the three T20 Internationals against England in Barbados, alongside Dwayne Bravo, Samuel Badree, Ravi Rampaul, Lendl Simmons and Sunil Narine.
Bravo’s brother Darren, who is currently featuring with the Windies team in their three-game One-Day International series against England in Antigua, is also named in the TT 13-man team.
Retaining their spots from the squad who finished as the runners-up at the NAGICO Super50 Tournament were openers Evin Lewis and Adrian Barath, middle-order batsman Jason Mohammed, leg-spinner Imran Khan and fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, while left-arm spinner Yannick Ottley was dropped.

Uncapped Augustus in four-day squad

Middle order batsman Jonathan Augustus is the only new face in the Trinidad and Tobago four-day team for their opening game of the Regional Four-day tournament against the Windward Islands at Queen’s Park Oval starting next Friday.
Augustus forced his way into the side following a consistent season in 2013, backed up by some good performances in the T&T Cricket Board trials which ended on Thursday.
The former West Indies Under-19 right-hander was second on the batting list after three three-day trial games, scoring 183 runs in four innings.
Left-hand opening batsman Evin Lewis topped the batting list with 288 runs in five innings with two centuries.
Lewis was also included in the four-day team, along with opener Adrian Barath, who managed just 77 runs in three innings.
The side, which will be captained by Rayad Emrit in the absence of regular skipper Denesh Ramdin, also includes West Indies players, left-hand middle-order batsman Darren Bravo and right-arm pacer Shannon Gabriel.
Ramdin is currently on West Indies duty for the ongoing series against England and is also on the regional side, along with four other T&T players—Ravi Rampaul, Sunil Narine, Lendl Simmons and Dwayne Bravo—for the ICC T20 World Cup bowling off later this month.
West Indies’ first game in the T20 World Cup is against India on March 23 and their final group game is against Pakistan on April 1. The semis are on April 3 and 4 and the final takes place on April 6.
Wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo, who stood in for Ramdin last season, will again take up duties behind the stumps this year. He was seventh on the list of top batsmen in the trials, scoring 128 runs in four innings.
The top bowlers coming out of the trials were leg-spinner Imran Khan, and left-arm bowler Kavesh Kantasingh who took 11 wickets each, and another leg-spinner Yannic Cariah who had ten wickets.
All three are in the T&T side along with pacers Emrit and Marlon Richards and another spinner in left-arm orthodox bowler Akeal Hosein, who played two games for T&T last season.
There was no room in the 13-man squad for veteran off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth who took ten wickets in the trials.

Combined Campuses and Colleges were eyeing first innings points, following another atrocious batting display by the Leeward Islands in their Regional Four-Day contest on Saturday.
Opting to bat first, the hosts were bundled out for 164 at Warner Park and CCC had reached 90 for two by the close, just 74 runs adrift of the lead on the opening day of the first round encounter.
Opener Shacaya Thomas was unbeaten on 56 and was partnered by Raymon Reifer who was unbeaten on six.
Earlier, the spin duo of Akeem Dewar and Ryan Austin wrecked the Leeward innings, accounting for seven wickets between them, as the hosts crashed spectacularly.
Cruising at 147 for three at one stage, the Leewards lost their last seven wickets for 17 runs with leg-spinner Dewar claiming four for 42 and off-spinner Austin finishing with three for 31.
Mali Richards, the son of legendary West Indies captain Sir Vivian Richards, top scored with 50 off 112 balls with nine fours while veteran Sylvester Joseph chipped in with 39 off 96 balls with eight fours.
The pair shared 69 for the third wicket, building on a 45-run second wicket stand between Richards and Montcin Hodge who scored 27 off 67 balls with five fours.
Joseph’s dismissal triggered the collapse, with the Leewards losing four wickets for just one run. They never recovered.
When CCC batted, the Leewards struck early when seamer Gavin Tonge claimed left-handed opener Anthony Alleyne for nine with the score on 19 in the third over.
Thomas, who has faced 83 balls and counted nine fours, then kept the Leewards bowlers at bay in an enterprising second wicket stand of 64 with Kyle Corbin (18).

The Windward Islands mounted a spirited fightback on the second day of their opening round Regional Four-Day match against Barbados at the Beausejour Cricket Ground on Saturday.
Only two sessions were possible on day one after rain ended play prematurely.
Kraigg Brathwaite and Carlos Brathwaite were in the middle of leading a Barbados resurgence at tea. The Bajans resumed their first innings on 152 for five with the skipper on 53 not out and his namesake on 37.
Barbados went on to score 213 and were bowled out just before dinner on the second afternoon. Kraigg Brathwaite was the last man out for 82.
Windwards pacer Nelon Pascal picked up his fifth five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, finishing with five for 61. Alston Bobb and Kenroy Peters both took two wickets each.
The Windwards saw out a short, tricky period to go to dinner on nine without loss but after the resumption, pacer Miguel Cummins fired for Barbados, snaring two wickets in two balls to leave Windwards reeling at 28 for two.
Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher sought to rebuild the innings as both came together in a crucial 42-run stand before Fletcher was caught behind off Tino Best, giving the Bajan pacer his 200th first-class wicket.
Charles quickly followed Fletcher as Kevin Stoute struck for the visitors to leave Windwards 70/4. But captain Liam Sebastien and Keddy Lesporis put on a solid stand to prevent any further damage.
By tea, both batsmen had added 73 runs and taken the score to 143 for four. Though Lesporis went soon after tea, Sebastien soldiered on. He got to his 50 and met a willing partner in Lindon James.
Together, Sebastien and James took the home side to a lead, surpassing Barbados’ first innings score.
Both were going strong until Jonathan Carter was brought into the attack. The medium pacer almost immediately removed Sebastien for 62, then sent Alston Bobb back to the pavilion without scoring.
But James continued to bat solidly. He brought up his 50 from 91 balls, hitting four fours and a six. Wickets fell around him though. Cummins struck twice in the 64th over removing both Peters and Delorn Johnson.
The Windwards declared their innings on 252 for nine, with James on 62 not out. It gave the hosts a 39-run lead. Their hope of picking up a late wicket were dashed though as Kraigg Brathwaite and Rashidi Boucher too Barbados to stumps in their second innings on 11/0.

Taylor boosted by ‘five-for’

Jerome Taylor, the Jamaican pacer who has returned to first class cricket after prolonged injury, says he is confident he can perform better than the effort that earned him a five-wicket haul against Guyana.
Twenty-nine-year-old Taylor, absent from cricket for over two and a half years due to a back injury, ended with five for 44 against Guyana in Jamaica’s first round WICB Regional Four-Day game.
His impressive bowling helped Jamaica to a seven-wicket win over the Guyanese at Sabina Park on the final day of the match, on Monday.
“I am really happy at this present time, although I still think I can do better than whatever performance I come up with,” said Taylor, in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.
“It is a work in progress and at the end of the day I ended with five wickets, so I will just keep doing what I have to do.”
Set 88 for victory, the hosts easily reached their target with Nkrumah Bonner striking 38 and opener Horace Miller, 29.
Taylor has so far taken 218 first class wickets in 68 matches, including 12 five-wicket hauls.
“Being away from the game for such a long time and coming back with a performance such as this, I can’t complain,” said Taylor, whose last appearance for the West Indies was in 2010.
“Hopefully, the performances here will take care of me getting back onto the regional team, and if the selectors require my assistance in the West Indies set-up then I will grab it with both hands again.”
The Jamaican pacer has also represented Kings Punjab XI and the Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League (IPL), as well as the Stanford Superstars.

Four-day season crucial for Red Force

Trinidad and Tobago will begin yet another journey towards attaining their first 2014 Caribbean cricket title when they lock horns with the Windward Islands tomorrow in their opening Regional Four-Day clash which bowls off at the Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair.
Having fallen victim to the dominant Bajans in the Nagico Super50 final last month, the four-day version of the game is now TT’s only chance of a Caribbean title for the 2014 season.
Speaking to West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) director Dr Allen Sammy yesterday, he revealed that this tourney is crucial towards rebuilding the strength and confidence of the Red Force.
“It has become exceedingly important for Trinidad and Tobago to win this tournament. This is because it is the only competition that we can have a chance of placing their names on the trophy.
There is only the four-day version and the fifty over version now, and we did do quite well in the latter but we faltered at the end. It is important that we do well in this format of the game,” he explained.
Barbados are the defending champions in the Four-Day competition and are expected to continue on their high after winning the 50 overs version.
“The games that entail Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, they tend to be a bit more fiercely competitive than the others. That traditional rivalry goes back about 60 odd years and it’s good for cricket because it’s like the Ashes. We still need to fight and fight very hard,” Dr Sammy continued.
Questioned of the strength of the national team’s batting line-up, Dr Sammy admitted that the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) has been trying to address the problem of underperforming batsmen.
He stated that they have recently begun installing new turf pitches and soil so that both batsmen and bowlers can familiarise themselves with a better quality pitch and training environment.
He concluded, “Everyone hopes that it (batting) will change from year to year. But it can only change if we do other things to make it happen. We are working keenly on the turf pitches.
This year in particular we supplied a lot of turf pitches and new soil. Of course the results will not manifest itself right away but the new soil was a deliberate start from the TTCB as one of the strategies towards increasing the quality of pitches. So all the cricket that is being played will now be in a more competitive environment and on better grounds.”

President of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB), Azim Bassarath is calling on the national senior cricketers for a great combined effort, as they open their challenge in the Regional Four-day tournament tomorrow against the Windward Islands at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Having sat out the first round on a bye, T&T will be looking to make a good start against the Windwards who are on a high after defeating Barbados in their first round match in St Kitts on the weekend.
T&T will be missing a number of their star players who are either on West Indies duty or injured. Allrounder Rayad Emrit will lead the T&T team due to the absence of regular captain Denesh Ramdin who is playing against England.
Also missing is Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine, Ravi Rampaul and Lendl Simmons. Keiron Pollard is still injured and was not considered for selection. The team has been strengthened by the return of Darren Bravo, who was not selected on the West Indies team that is currently playing England.
Bassarath said he expects the team to do well despite the fact that a number of top players are missing. “I am expecting the guys to do well despite the fact that the senior players are not there. We have always had good bench strength and this is expected to come through for us. A good start is essential and we are hoping that the boys give a good showing against a Windwards team that is very confident after their first round loss. Also this Windwards team has always given us trouble and we need to be mindful of that, so the guys have to dig deep.
“It is essential is for the guys to bind together and exhibit a great team effort. Team unity has always been our strength and I am confident you would see that this weekend.”
Bassarath, who is also chairman of the regional matches committee, said all arrangements are in place for the match and fans can expect no hassles at the venue.

Patience key as T&T battles Windwards

T&T manager Manohar Ramsaran says that patience has to play a key role if this country is to come away triumphant in their opening match of the Regional Four-Day tournament against the Windwards Islands, starting this morning at 10am at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.
The local players will open their account in the tournament today after being on a bye for the first round. While T&T was inactive, the Windwards were busy dishing out licks to Barbados in their opening game in St. Kitts. The Islanders come into this game with their tails up, as they totally dominated the Barbadians who were recently crowned Nagico Super50 champions.
Yesterday, the T&T had a good work out at the Oval, while the Windwards took in a session at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Couva. Speaking to the media, Ramsaran said his players were fit and ready to go. “They have been playing a lot of cricket but now with this tournament about to get off, they are very excited and keen to do well. First Class cricket still remains a big deal for the players and they are keen to impress.
“We will be coming up against a Windwards team that has done well against us in the past and I can tell you that over the next four days, the cricket will be tough. We have a young team because most of our senior players are missing due to West Indies commitments or injury, and I am sure they will all contribute to fill the breach and come out with a good result.”
Ramsaran said the key to success will be patience. “Our players have been coming out of a diet of limited overs cricket both regionally and on the domestic scene and now they have to transform into four-day cricket. Patience is the key here, the batsmen have to occupy the crease for long periods and the bowlers have to be disciplined and continue to bowl and consistent line and length and wait for their results. I see patience as a key to us winning this game.”
The former Minister of Sports added that batsmen Darren Bravo, Adrian Barath and Evin Lewis have to come good and lead the others. “We have about three or four senior batsmen up front and they need to lead the others. They have to take charge, so that the others can come in, feel comfortable and continue the good work.”
He also had a lot of faith in stand in captain Rayad Emrit. “Emrit has been around for quite a while and although he is a substitute captain, as Denesh Ramdin is not available, he commands control of the players and this is important. He has a sound knowledge of the game and has been in good form with bat and ball, so he can lead from the front.”
In the other matches, Jamaica, with whom the Windwards share the lead on the points table, will be looking to continue their dominance over Leeward Islands, the other first round winning side – and mark the occasion of the first ever floodlit, first-class match at Warner Park in St. Kitts with their fourth straight victory there.
Guyana and Barbados, two of the beaten sides from the first round, will renew their long-standing rivalry in the other match of the round at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence, Guyana.
A victory for the Guyanese would be a piece of history. They have not beaten the Barbadians on home soil for three decades – during which period they have collected three wins in their opponents’ backyard.

Young Chanderpaul drafted into Guyana squad

Promising young batsmen Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Chanderpaul Hemraj have been included in the Guyana squad for their second round match against Barbados in the Regional Four-day Championships this weekend.
Chanderpaul and Hemraj replace veterans Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan who have been forced out of the second round contest through injury after not participating in the opening round.
Tagnarine, Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 17-year-old son, made his debut last year against the Leeward Islands and has to date scored 176 runs at an average of 22.00 with a highest score of 42.
He was the most consistent batsman with two half-centuries and one century playing for young West Indies in the recent Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh.
20-year-old Hemraj, who had his first stint at the WICB’s High Performance Centre last year, has played three first-class matches for Guyana since making his debut against Trinidad and Tobago two years ago, averaging 9.50 with a topscore of 29.
Guyana, who suffered an opening round defeat to Jamaica, play Barbados from tomorrow in a day/night affair at the Guyana National Stadium.

T&T rally against Windwards

Trinidad and Tobago middle-order batsman Jason Mohammed defied a strong Windward Islands bowling performance to hit his sixth first class half century to help the hosts recover from a poor start to post a competitive first innings total of 222 on the opening day of their regional four-day match, yesterday.
On a green Queen’s Park Oval pitch in Port of Spain, the hosts were sent in and quickly lost their most in-form batsman, left-hander Evin Lewis, who scored two centuries in the trials leading up to the game. Number three Darren Bravo, who has been struggling for runs, also departed.
That is when Mohammed flipped the script and gradually started to rebuild the innings, hitting 73 before skipper Rayad Emrit (28) and all-rounder Yannic Cariah (24) ensured the hosts finished the day with one batting bonus point in the bag as they passed the 200-run mark.
Pacer Delorn Johnson took advantage of the green surface, picking up five for 48, removing the top two T&T batsmen before returning late in the day to send back the last three. Spinner Alston Bobb chipped in with four for 53 as the Windwards claimed three bowling bonus points.
The Windwards faced two overs and ended on 12 without loss at stumps.
When T&T batted, they would have been relieved to see Mohammed get some runs knowing that the batsman’s previous eight innings amounted to just 17 and in five of those he failed to get off the mark.
Yesterday, his innings was full of fight. He faced 164 balls and batted for more than three hours, hitting ten fours. The handful of spectators would have appreciated the knock although he fell short of his century.
Mohammed and Adrian Barath survived some testing bowling in the first session with Barath taking his chances with some shots in the air over slips and others all along the ground through the covers as they consolidated to take the score from 17 for two to 67 without further loss at the luncheon interval.
After the break, the Windwards found a way back, breaking the 68-run stand when Barath chased a wide delivery from Johnson and edged behind to wicket-keeper Lindon James for 39 (103 balls).
Mohammed and Steven Katwaroo put on 55 in the remainder of the session but did not really threaten the Windwards, who shored up their hold on the match when they removed the T&T wicket-keeper on the stroke of tea, Katwaroo stumped for 20 off Bobb with the score on 140.
That opened the door for another T&T slide as the next three batsmen, including Mohammed, were dismissed by Bobb with T&T adding just 13 runs to the score.
Five balls after the tea interval, Mohammed departed after stretching forward to defend against Bobb and popping one up to Romel Currency at silly point.
Emrit joined with Cariah, and they shared in an exciting 51-run stand in the final session before the T&T skipper was bowled by Johnson. The T&T innings closed shortly after.
Today it will be the turn of the T&T bowlers to inspire their teammates.

Bravo, Hosein give T&T edge over Windwards

Trinidad and Tobago’s opening Regional Four-Day Tournament encounter with Windward Islands looks set to finish inside of three days, with the hosts only marginally ahead after Darren Bravo led a second innings fightback yesterday at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain.
Bravo’s 57, in partnerships of 47 and 21 with Rayad Emrit (18) and Yannic Cariah (eight not out) respectively, left T&T stumbling along at 127 for seven but with an advantage of 227 after a first innings lead of 100.
But Akeal Hosein’s six for 33, which limited the Windwards to 122, ensured T&T’s top order meltdown in their second time at the crease did not put them out of the game. Bravo and Cariah will have the chance to come out again from 10 a.m. this morning and stretch the lead beyond their opponents.
It was Bravo’s firmness in the T&T second innings that prevented the Windwards from batting a second time in the same day. The rest of the batsmen failed to deal well with the full and straight line of the visitors. Opener Adrian Barath went caught behind, as five other batsmen were trapped in front, and one other, bowled.
Pacers Delorn Johnson, Nelon Pascal and left-armer Kenroy Peters were equally effective with the ball for the visitors, snatching two wickets each, the other going to slow bowler and captain Liam Sebastien.
Johnson pried out Lewis without scoring off the first ball of the second over, and he was followed by Barath (six) in the third over. First innings topscorer Jason Mohammed (six) could not repeat, as he was trapped lbw by Johnson, the ninth wicket to fall between lunch and tea.
In the final session, it got worse for T&T before it got better. Wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo (two; bowled Sebastien) was the fourth T&T victim with the score on 32, and Imran Khan (25) and Akeal Hosein (duck) went off successive balls from Peters—again both lbw—spread across the 23rd and 25th overs.
Emrit checked the slide for a bit, mixing aggression with patience—he had one four and one six in 57 balls—but Pascal had his number deep into the session, and T&T were 106 for seven. But Cariah, once considered a batting allrounder, also proved solid, and helped Bravo take T&T in at stumps without further casualty.
Bravo’s determination was borne out by his 57 (nine fours) off 148 balls in just under three hours.
Still, the Windwards would not have been too upset with their position at the close given their performance with the bat. They resumed from their overnight 12 without loss with Devon Smith (eight) and Tyrone Theophille (four) at the crease.
But the batting through the innings definitely did not impress Smith (48 not out), as he watched first Theophille (17) depart at Emrit’s hands with the score on 38, and then the spine of his team’s batting snap over just about 32 overs.
Evin Lewis ran out Dalton Polius (five), before Hosein took over. He kept most of the other scalps under double figure scores, except for James, who hit 22 before he was tempted and stumped by Katwaroo off the left-arm spinner.
Jason Mohammed helped usher out the tail with the scalps of Sebastien (nine) and Peters (zero).
Hosein wrapped up the innings with the dismissals of Johnson and Pascal but the batsmen almost let that advantage slip away completely.

AKEAL HOSEIN and Darren Bravo starred with the ball and bat respectively as Trinidad and Tobago ended the second day of their Regional Four Day match against the Windward Islands in a dominant position at the Queen’s Park Oval.
The Windwards, resuming on 12 runs without loss in response to Trinidad and Tobago’s 222, were bundled out for 122 with Hosein, in his third First Class match, snaring six wickets for 33 runs in 13.5 overs of left-arm finger-spin.
And Bravo, who is Hosein’s teammate at the Queen’s Park Cricket Club, also displayed his knowledge of the pitch with a valuable 57 not out (including nine fours) as Trinidad and Tobago closed on 127/7, for an overall lead of 227.
And, judging from the way the Windward Islands batsmen performed, with the exception of veteran Devon Smith (48 not out) and Lyndon James (22), it will seem almost certain that Trinidad and Tobago will claim an outright victory, either today or early tomorrow (weather permitting).
The Windwards started the day with Smith on eight and Tyrone Theophile on four, and the openers carried the score to 38 before Theophile, attempting a second successive back-foot cover drive, sent one low to cover point for 17. Dalton Polius failed to beat Evin Lewis’ throw to the striker’s end from square leg before Hosein, in collaboration with occasional off-spinner Jason Mohammed, wrecked havoc as the Windwards lost their last eight batsmen for 62 runs.
Hosein, who played two matches, away from home, in last year’s competition, enticed a return catch from Keddy Lesporis while Romel Currency, second ball, came down the wicket but edged the left-arm spinner high to slip.
Shortly before lunch, captain Liam Sebastien seemed stunned after he was given out caught at slip off Mohammed, while James’ 26-ball knock, with a four and two sixes, ended when he was stumped by Steven Katwaroo off Hosein.
Alston Bobb was snapped up at silly mid-on, Kenroy Peters was bowled through the gate, Delorn Johnson edged high to slip with the field spread and Nelon Pascal was leg-before on the back foot.
Smith carried his bat throughout the innings, which lasted five minutes short of three hours, and was decorated with eight boundaries off 114 deliveries.
The Trinidad and Tobago top order, barring Bravo, all failed, with Lewis leg-before, Adrian Barath was caught behind by James off a loose drive, Mohammed was adjudged LBW playing back and Katwaroo was bowled neck and crop, last ball before tea.
Imran Khan offered good resistance with 25 before left-arm pacer Peters removed him and Hosein in quick succession, but Bravo was joined by his skipper Rayad Emrit who combined for a vital seventh-wicket stand of 44.
Both played with a straight bat but Emrit was undone by a yorker by Pascal which struck him on his boot but Bravo and Yannic Cariah (eight not out) remained solid until the close of play.

The Windward Islands were mesmerised by a cunning exhibition of spin yesterday as left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein finished with match figures of 11/67 to give Trinidad and Tobago an emphatic 186-run win in the four-day regional tournament at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Hosein, who took 6/33 in the first innings, continued his fantastic form with figures of 10-1-34-5 in the second innings to dismiss the visitors for 124 in chase of a massive 311 for victory.
Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel tested the top order of the Windwards with pace and bounce early in their second innings. After captain Rayad Emrit gave Gabriel the ball from the southern end of the ground, wickets began to tumble. Gabriel first disturbed the furniture of Tyrone Theophille for eight. Shortly after, Dalton Polius was back in the pavilion as he found the edge to give Yannic Cariah a simple catch in second slip. This left the Windwards on 47/2.
Opening batsman Devon Smith who batted throughout the first innings, again looked solid, taking the Windwards to 60/2 at the tea break with 34 to his name. Keddy Lesporis was with Smith on five. Gabriel’s impressive figures at the tea break read 8-4-19-2.
Immediately after tea, Hosein, T&T’s hero in the first innings, removed Lesporis (nine) and Romel Currency (two) to reduce the Windwards to 68/4. Wickets continued to fall as Smith remained unfazed.
However, shortly after bringing up his half-century, Smith lost his wicket for a valiant 55, a knock that included nine fours. Leg spinner Imran Khan got the prized wicket of Smith as Adrian Barath took a smart catch at short leg. The score was 101/7 and T&T’s victory was in sight.
Hosein and Khan finished off proceedings, grabbing the final three wickets together to end the match inside three days. Khan ended with 3/16.
Earlier, the lower order of the T&T batting added a valuable 83 runs to their overnight second innings score of 127/7 to destroy the Windwards chances of a comeback. Cariah led the T&T resistance, but was unfortunately dismissed right after lunch for a well played 49, a knock that included six fours. Marlon Richards struck 21. Darren Bravo was the home team’s top scorer, adding 12 to his overnight 57. Bravo’s watchful 69-run knock came off 188 balls and included 10 fours, ending his recent poor run of form. Kenroy Peters (3/37) and Nelon Pascal (3/40) both snatched three wickets for the Windwards.

Emrit happy with ‘decent’ bowling effort

Trinidad and Tobago skipper Rayad Emrit praised his bowlers for guiding them to a 186-run win over the Windward Islands in their opening Regional Four-Day tournament match at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain which ended on Sunday.
“We stuck to our plans and the bowlers delivered,” Emrit said yesterday, referring to the efforts of 20-year-old left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein who grabbed 11 wickets in the match—six for 33 in the first innings and five for 34 in the second—to set up the win.
Emrit admitted that the batsmen failed to live up to expectations, causing them to fall about 50 runs short of their revised first innings target, but at the same time the captain praised the “fighting” half centuries from Jason Mohammed in the first innings and then Darren Bravo in the second, as well as some handy contributions from the lower order which made T&T’s scorecard look a bit more respectable.
“I thought it was a decent effort on the part of the bowlers. My main concern yet again is our batting. We did not put up the scores that we wanted to but I must say hats off to Darren Bravo in the second innings. That fighting 69 he got and Yannic Cariah’s 49, that gave us a lead that we were comfortable with, but like I said before, there is room for improvement,” he added. Bravo faced 188 balls for his score, putting on 47 with Emrit (18) for the seventh wicket before sharing 61 with Cariah for the eighth.
Cariah then put on 42 with Marlon Richards for the ninth wicket with Marlon Richards (21) to extend T&T’s lead. In their first innings, a lower order rally, and Mohammed’s 73 off 164 balls, were the main reasons they got to 222.
“Our first innings target is usually 350 or anything over three hundred would have been ideal. Because the wicket was a little wet on the first morning, we had reduced that to around 275 but we knew the first hour was going to be difficult but our middle order did not give us what we expected, so thanks to the lower order we got a respectable score,” Emrit explained.
“In the second innings we knew how the wicket was playing and we knew anything around 200 we would be comfortable with,” he added.
Speaking about Hosein’s performance in only his third first-class match, Emrit said: “I would not say it was a surprise but we expected him to do well on that wicket.”
Emrit said it was a special performance from the Queen’s Park Cricket Club all-rounder and expects Hosein to take his game even higher in the future.
“It was his home ground but taking 11 wickets in the match is something special and he can only go from strength to strength from here,” Emrit said of the former West Indies Under-19 player.
If T&T had hit their original first innings batting mark, they would have gotten three extra bonus batting points. But as it stands, they will have to be content with one bonus batting point and three bonus bowling points.
T&T finished the game with 16 points in the end (12 for winning plus the four bonus points) while the Windwards, who beat defending champions Barbados in their first round match, earned three points.
Chairman of selectors Alec Burns also confirmed yesterday that T&T will retain their squad from the opening game for their day/night match against the Leeward Islands at Queen’s Park Oval which bowls off at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Manager Manohar Ramsaran says the national cricket team would not spend too much time enjoying the early success following their runaway 186-run win over the Windward Islands in their opening match of the four-day regional tournament on Sunday.
Behind a mesmerising spell of spin bowling from 20-year-old left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, T&T defeated the Windwards inside three days at the Queen’s Park Oval. Hosein ended with remarkable match figures of 11/67.
Ramsaran said the team was satisfied with its performance, but not elated, as the players know there was still a lot of work to be done. Ramsaran stated: “We had a job to do and we did that, the season has now started, we are satisfied but not elated.” He spoke highly of Hosein’s performance, saying that the team was proud of his efforts.
The manager said that fast bowler Shannon Gabriel also put in a creditable performance to back up the spinners, especially in the second innings. Gabriel’s figures were 8-4-19-2, as the bowler generated good bounce and pace off the wicket.
The batting display by the top order is a bit of a concern at the moment for the Red Force. “We are still worried about the top order, we expect them to do better, “ Ramsaran said. T&T was reduced to 17/2 in the first innings, followed by 8/2 in the second. Ramsaran was however pleased that Darren Bravo found some form in the second innings, scoring a patient 69 to take T&T’s lead past the 300-run mark. “He fought it out, showed great character and determination that I am proud off.”
Also putting in a valiant effort for the home team was all-rounder Yannic Cariah. T&T closed day two on 127/7 in its second innings, with an overall lead of 227. T&T needed someone to hold up the lower order to set the Windwards a challenging total. Cariah was the man, as he added 41 runs to his overnight eight not out to guide T&T to 210 all out. Chasing a massive 311 for victory, the Windwards folded for 124. Cariah also contributed a valuable 24 in the first innings.
Ramsaran thanked the die hard supporters for coming out, but is hoping for more support as the season goes along. “I expected more people to come out and support this young team, but it was good to see the die hard supporters.”
T&T will train tomorrow and Thursday ahead of its third round match against the Leeward Islands, which bowls off on Friday at the Queen’s Park Oval. The T&T/Leewards match will be a day/night affair, starting at 3 pm everyday. T&T received a first round bye.

T&T may look towards its spinners again in the third round of the West Indies Cricket Board Regional four-day tournament against the Leeward Islands, which bowls off today at 3 pm at the Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain.
Led by Akeal Hosein, T&T's spin bowlers grabbed 16 of the 20 wickets against the Windward Islands in the last round to romp to a 186-run win at the Queen’s Park Oval. The Windwards had no answers to the T&T spin, as Hosein, a left-arm spinner, finished the match with figures of 11/67. Imran Khan and Jason Mohammed also got in on the action. Mohammed took two wickets in the first innings, while Khan snatched three wickets at the end of the Windwards second innings to complete the demolition job.
T&T will be hoping that the top order, which looked fragile against the Windwards, final comes good. In the first innings, T&T was restricted to 17/2, and then 8/2 in the second but solid batting from the middle and tail, ensured a competitive score.
Yannic Cariah, Marlon Richards and captain Rayad Emrit all contributed valuable runs at the end of the batting line up, although the contributions of Jason Mohammed and Darren Bravo, who both struck half centuries, could not be under estimated.
In the first innings T&T was 153/7 at one stage, but a 51-run partnership between Cariah and Emrit took the score past 200. Cariah made 24, while Emrit scored 28 to guide T&T to 222. Cariah (49) showed determination again in the second innings, sharing in a 42-run ninth wicket partnership with Richards (21).
The Leeward Islands, captained by West Indian opener Kieran Powell, is coming off a narrow three-wicket loss to Jamaica in the last round at Warner Park, St Kitts. Powell led from the front with the bat, scoring 91 and 86 in the match. Also performing in the last round for the Leewards was former West Indies spin bowler Anthony Martin, who took six wickets in the match.

T&T start strong against Leewards

Trinidad and Tobago opening batsman Evin Lewis scored his maiden first-class half century before he was given out for handling the ball just before the tea interval on the first day of the Regional Four-day tournament day/night game against the Leeward Islands at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain last evening.
Lewis hit 78 off 165 balls including 11 fours and a six as the T&T batsmen in general delivered for the better part of the first day as they went into the tea interval on 178 for two, with Darren Bravo also hitting a half century, heading into the break on 60 not out off 135 balls with four fours and two sixes.
Earlier, T&T skipper Rayad Emrit won the toss and elected to bat first and immediately, his opening batsmen Adrian Barath and Lewis applied pressure on the Leewards bowling, putting on 56 runs for the first wicket in the first hour of play.
Barath hit 24 off 63 balls before he tried to sweep Justin Athanaze and edged behind to wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton shortly after the first drinks break.
Bravo joined Lewis and they took the score to 101 at lunch and after the break, the partnership flourished into a 105-run stand before Lewis was given out in a very rare mode of dismissal, but not before bringing up his 50 off 101 balls with ten fours.
Lewis played a defensive shot against off-spinner Athanaze, with the ball bouncing on the ground in front of him. The batsman caught the ball as it bounced back up and then dropped it back onto the ground. The Leeward Islands fielders appealed and the umpires consulted and sent Lewis on his way.
Bravo faced 114 balls for his 50, hitting four fours and a six and he and Jason Mohammed (nine not out) took T&T to tea without further damage.

Maiden century for Akeal Hosein

Trinidad and Tobago continued their domination of the Leeward Islands on the second day of the Regional Four-day day/night fixture at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain yesterday with Akeal Hosein hitting his maiden first class century and Steven Katwaroo hitting his third first-class half century to put the hosts firmly in control up to the tea break.
The day started with T&T continuing from 263 for six overnight with Katwaroo on one off 15 balls and Hosein on zero from 12.
By the tea interval, T&T had declared on 458 for seven off 153 overs, with Hosein making an unbeaten 102 off 185 balls and Katwaroo being lbw to Justin Athanaze for 91 off 202 balls on the stroke of the interval. The pair had put on 197 for the seventh wicket and they did not give the Leewards a chance to get back into the game.
They brought up the T&T 300 in the 110th over to ensure their team earned three batting points.
Hosein was at times more aggressive of the two as he swept Kieran Powell for four before hitting the spinner for a straight six before bringing up his half century, clipping Tonito Willett to fine-leg for four.
The left-hander faced 94 balls and hit six fours and one six to get to his 50.
After that, Katwaroo’s reached his third half century in his sixth game hitting pacer Gavin Tonge for four to reach the milestone off 125 balls with six fours.
But the pair had more in store for their opponents and the handful of spectators that came to see the game.
After the dinner break, they brought up a century stand for the seventh wicket and it kept growing as Hosein inched closer to triple figures.
The small crowd really got behind the Queen’s Park left-hander, clapping and chanting when he got to 99 and there was an uproar when he finally pushed Anthony Martin to mid-on to reach his century off 183 balls with nine fours and two sixes.
Katwaroo hit nine fours in his innings before he was out, but by then he and Hosein had put their team in the driver’s seat.
