Match facts
Tuesday, April 1, 2014
Start time 1930 local (13:30 GMT)

Teams: Pakistan | West Indies

Big Picture
It is a knockout scenario for both teams, with the winner going through to the semi-finals. They have the same number of wins (two) and points (four) but the defending champions West Indies enjoy a higher net run-rate, +1.223, against Pakistan's +0.893. In the event of a washout West Indies will go through on their higher net run-rate, but the forecast is for clear weather.

Pakistan batted first in their last three games but they are yet to be tested chasing a target. West Indies, on the contrary, have defended and chased targets in the group stage. Hence, the toss could be a decisive factor for Pakistan.

Both teams have quality spinners and are capable of posting big scores. Both lost their opening matches to India but bounced back strongly to register successive victories against Australia and Bangladesh. The contest on April 1 will be their first ever meeting in a World T20. They have played just three T20s in two bilateral series since 2011, with Pakistan winning their last two encounters in 2013.

Form guide
(completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan WWLLW
West Indies WWLLW

In the spotlight
Though he has scores of 34, 48 and 53, Chris Gayle hasn't exploded in the manner he is known for. He was unusually cautious against Bangladesh, scoring a run-a-ball 48. However, bowlers like Saeed Ajmal cannot be complacent against him and will have to guard against a backlash from Gayle.

With every passing game, Shoaib Malik's role in the side comes under the scanner. He has scores of 18, 6* and 26, and hasn't bowled in any of the three games. He is playing his fourth World T20 and all have been quiet, with bat and ball.

Pitch and conditions
With sunshine predicted through the day, the Mirpur pitch is expected to remain dry but it gets sluggish in the evening. The dew hasn't been a factor in the last three matches but Pakistan have been training with the wet ball recently to get used to it.

Team news
West Indies might retain their winning line-up from the Australia match.

West Indies (likely): 1 Dwayne Smith, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Lendl Simmons, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Darren Sammy (capt), 7 Andre Russell, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Samuel Badree, 11 Krishmar Santokie.

Pakistan too have no reason to change their winning combination. In the previous match, Pakistan brought in the experienced bowler Sohail Tanvir.

Pakistan (likely): 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Sohaib Maqsood, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Zulfiqar Babar

Stat and trivia
In three matches against West Indies, Mohammad Hafeez has figures of 3 for 36 from 9 overs, with an average of 12 and an economy rate of 4. He has dismissed Gayle twice in these matches, for 5 and 1
Umar Akmal has two 40-plus scores in three T20I innings against West Indies, including a Man-of-the-Match effort of 46 not out the last time the two teams played each other, in Kingstown in 2013
In the tournament so far, West Indies' spinners have taken 13 wickets at an average of 14.38 and an economy rate of 6.09, compared to Pakistan spinners' 10 wickets at 24.40 and an economy-rate of 6.59

Quotes

"It is very difficult to predict how the teams will play but I know it will be a nail-biting game. Come that game, we will be aware of what exactly we need to do. We need to play well to get out of this group of death and look forward to playing in the semi-final."
West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo

"The team that plays spinners well will win the match. We know that it is a match where we can't make a mistake."
Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez

Toss West Indies win the toss and they will bat. Sammy says he'd like to put runs on the board, and put Pakistan under pressure while chasing. West Indies unchanged.
Hafeez: "It is always difficult to set a total on a track like this." Pakistan are also unchanged.
Rk: "@Chris - I would hope good WI turn up so that we have a great match. Dont expect to win because other team plays bad."

6.45pm

Pakistan and West Indies have never played each other in the World T20, and have played only three T20s against each other.
Chris: "As a West Indian fan I hope "bad Pakistan" shows up today. Rally!"
Arnold: "For this game, for Windies I would drop Ramdin and let Simmons take the glove and bring in Rampaul."
Bilal: "The message before the start of the match from Pakistani players and fans to West Indies would be: " We sure DO like you mates , don't know who said no one likes you" " Ha, ha!
MeenaSathya: "In my WI team, i would prefer J Charles over AD Russell. I didnt remember any big performance from Russell, but J Charles played well in the limited opportunities he got. "

Some strong quotes from Darren Sammy a day ahead of the game. "Whatever approach we come with, we definitely have to rotate the strike. I think the game against India, where it was spin-oriented, probably 60% of the balls were dot balls, so it's something we've been working on." Will they be able to nudge the spinners around, and pile the pressure on themselves.

DHAKA:

Those who are keen to anoint India skipper MS Dhoni as the best finisher in limited-overs cricket better reserve their judgment. West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy are fast staking a claim to that tag.

After their heist against Australia, when they added 49 in 19 balls on Friday, the duo pulverised Pakistan in their virtual quarterfinal at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Batting first, they put on 71 runs off 32 balls to swing the momentum irreversibly in the Super 10 clash of the World T20 on Tuesday to help them recover from a delicate 81/5 in 13.5 overs.

The last five overs went for 82 runs as Pakistan's best death bowlers Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal suffered rare meltdowns. Gul conceded 21 runs in the 18th over as Bravo hit him for two sixes, one each over long on and mid-wicket.

Then it was Ajmal's turn to suffer as Bravo slammed him for successive sixes over mid-wicket. Sammy too hit the offie for a six over the bowler's head and a boundary through cover as the Windies took charge.

Bravo's run out for a violent 26-ball 46 (2x4, 4x6) in the final over didn't affect Sammy as he hammered Sohail Tanveer for 14 runs. From a position of hopelessness, West Indies gained ascendancy with a total of 166 for 6 after electing to bat. The last three overs had fetched them 59.

Pakistan, it seemed, were shell shocked after that assault and were bowled out for 82 in 17.5 overs. Ahmed Shehzad, the centurion in their emphatic win against Bangladesh on Sunday, fell LBW to the first ball of the innings from a full-length swinging delivery to left-arm-seamer Krishmar Santokie.

Leg-spinner Samuel Badree (3-10) dismissed Kamran Akmal, caught at mid-off by a dancing Bravo, and deceived younger brother Umar with a googly. He also had Shoaib Malik with a straighter one as Pakistan sank to 13/4.

Skipper Hafeez tried to consolidate but there is no such thing in T20, especially when you are chasing 167. His tardy approach hurt the 2009 champions even more as powerful hitters like Sohaib Maqsood (18), Sohail Tanveer (14) and Shahid Afridi (18) were left with too much to do.

Afridi and Tanveer tried to do the impossible by carting a couple of sixes even off Narine, but eventually the Bravo-Sammy partnership was too good to feature in a losing cause. Narine finished with 3 for 16 including the wickets of Maqsood and Afridi as wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin ended with four stumpings.

West Indies now meet Sri Lanka in the first semifinal on Thursday in a repeat of the 2012 World T20 final in Colombo while India take on South Africa in the second semis on Friday.

Darren Sammy's men overcome a wobbly start to post a strong 166 for six before returning to bowl out Pakistan for 82 runs in 17.5 overs and set up a semi-final clash with Sri Lanka on Thursday (local time).

India, who won the inaugural edition in 2007, take on South Africa in the second semi-final on Friday (local time).

Opting to bat first in what was effectively a quarter-final contest, Bravo (46) and Sammy (42 not out) provided the late assault as West Indies plundered 59 runs in the last three overs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

"We had nothing to lose, we were under pressure," man-of-the-match Bravo told reporters of the stage when West Indies were 81 for five in the 14th over.

"I said to Sammy 'Don't worry about picking (Pakistani spinner Saeed) Ajmal or trying to rotate (strike) ... Keep your eyes on the ball. We are powerful enough. If we get close to the ball, we'll hit it over the ropes'."

Pakistan's chase got off to a horror start with paceman Krishmar Santokie hitting Ahmed Shehzad's toe with the first ball of the innings to trap the in-form batsman leg before.

Leg-spinner Badree (3-10) then took over, wrecking the rivals with a three-wicket burst and Pakistan could not recover after they had been reduced to 13 for four in the sixth over.

Badree's spin colleague Sunil Narine (3-16) then ran through the top order to complete the rout.

The 19 runs Mohammad Hafeez scored was the highest individual score in the Pakistani collapse.

DRAWING FIRST BLOOD

Earlier, Pakistan captain Hafeez drew first blood by removing Chris Gayle (five), arguably the most destructive batsman in 20-over cricket, to give his team a perfect start.

Hafeez lured Gayle out of the crease and beat his bat for Kamran Akmal to complete a simple stumping.

Lendl Simmons (31) and Marlon Samuels (20) somewhat arrested the slide with a 39-run stand before falling in quick succession.

Bravo then set alight the stadium with his sizzling power-hitting to revive West Indies before he ran himself out after a 26-ball blitz that included four sixes.

Sammy remained unbeaten after a breezy 20-ball knock as West Indies launched a spectacular late assault to amass 82 runs in the final five overs, exactly what Pakistan managed in their entire innings.

"Our aim was to get to at least 135-140 with the start we got but the self-belief we had, the form and power that we have, the momentum (being) with us, there was chance to be positive and get 160."

Hafeez said Pakistan could not recover once West Indies broke loose in the final overs.

"We gave 70-71 runs in the last overs that took the game away from us," said the Pakistan skipper.

"In the last four overs, even our best bowlers Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul did not get their basics right and conceded too many runs in the end... When our chase started, we did not get any momentum, playing shots which were not there."

Bravo Comments

"In those situations, the best of them all go for runs," Bravo said of the disdain with which Ajmal and Gul were treated. "We had nothing to lose, we were under pressure. So I said to Sammy, as long as we stay still, don't worry about picking Ajmal or trying to rotate, just stay still, keep our eyes on the ball, we're powerful enough if we get close to the ball to hit it over the ropes. Our aim was to get at least 135 to 140 with the start we got but the self-belief we have, the form and the power we have, the momentum went with us, we finished positive and got to 160."
