Very interesting! Nice to see an expanded league, but shame there's no automatic promotion to Pro League

16 teams for Super League
T&T Guardian Reports.

Joe Public, the 2012 National Super League (NSL) treble champion which was initially relegated to the East Zone Premier Division along with FC Santa Rosa recently, may have avoided relelgation, following an invitation by the T&T Football Association (TTFA) for both teams to participate in the NSL competition.

This was revealed yesterday, when the TTFA announced an increase from 13 teams to 16 teams for the upcoming competition, which will start later this year. In a TTFA media release, the body made the declaration following a meeting of its executive committee.

The release stated,:“The 13 existing clubs that participated in the TTFA Super League will be invited to participate in an expanded Super League in 2014.”

“The top three clubs based on the standing at the competition of the qualifying competition in 2014 will be similarly invited to participate in an expanded Super League in 2014.”

It was initially advised that only two teams would gain promotion to the NSL following the recently concluded qualifying competition. La Horquetta SA from the Eastern Football Association (EFA) and Southern Football Association league champion, Petrotrin Palo Seco, finished first and second, respectively.

The invitation for the third-place finisher of the qualifying competition, would give Tobago club D’Lime Bar Goal City FC, the opportunity to join the second-tier football league. The league already includes three Tobago clubs, Stokely Vale FC, 1976 FC Phoenix and Bethel United.

The TTFA advised that the three clubs, Joe Public, FC Santa Rosa and Goal City must respond to the invitation by April 25. The release concluded, “Should all clubs accept the invitation to participate, the National Super League will be expanded to 16 clubs.

As a result, there will be no forced relegation of teams that participated in the 2013 National Super League.” The TTFA, prior to making a decision to increase the number of clubs in the 2014 tournament, deemed Joe Public and FC Santa Rosa as the two relegated teams, after both clubs finished their campaigns in the 11th and 12th spots, respectively, in the 13-team standings.

Defence Force finished last after failing to complete its fixtures, due to the temporary withdrawal forced by senior officials. The club was permitted to remain in the league for the 2014 season, as circumstances were out of the club’s control, according to the TTFA’s executive committee.

Castara Goal City will join Tobago team 1976 Phoenix, Stokely Vale and Bethel United in the expanded blink bmobile National Super League, this year.

The Club members made the decision to accept the invitation from the tournament committee to join the fold despite missing out on one of the two berths in the qualifying tournament that they had competed in, earlier in the year. They finished third in the six team qualifier.

However, the management committee for the League made a decision to expand the number of teams in an effort to increase the number of games each team plays.

An official of the Castara team told the Tobago News that the players of the team are very enthusiastic about competing at a higher level and they will start training soon in preparation for their campaign in the League.

National Super League on hold.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

The FIFA World Cup now taking place in Brazil may result in a postponement of the semi-professional National Super League football competition. Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) general secretary Sheldon Phillips confirmed a possible delay to the start of the Super League, with most of the world including Trinidad and Tobago firmly focused on international football taking place in Brazil.

“We are actually getting ready to have a meeting later on (today) to discuss the start date,” said Phillips Friday. “Obviously with the World Cup, there has been some discussion about delaying the start of the Super League until after the World Cup. The question is exactly what date that is going to be. So, we are going to have to iron that out in the next day or two.”

For the first time, the TTFA will run the Super League, after long-time administrators All Sport Promotion voluntarily relinquished control of the competition. “We have 16 team slated to compete. That is, 16 slots and commitments,” said Phillips, adding, “The teams from last year and the ones (La Horquetta SA and Palo Seco) that came up from the Champions of Champions. But, we are still finalising the entries.”

The Super League, the second tier of football in Trinidad and Tobago, began in 2002 and has been exclusively run by Anthony Hartford’s All Sport Promotions company, which relinquished the competition to the TTFA at the end of last season due to increasing financial difficulties, arising out of a dispute with the Ministry of Sport two years ago.

They ended up withdrawing before playing in the Pro League in 2009 :(. I think that it might be more appropriate in the Super League than Pro League - it'd be good especially to make sure players aren't playing InterCol and instead getting professional training.

“The TTFA is committed to establishing and growing community-based football. The decision to reabsorb league operations into the TTFA was in no small part inspired by our belief that the future of the game’s development has its foundation in the communities,” Phillips said.

“The Super League will have representation from all corners of the Trinidad and Tobago including a record number of four teams from Tobago.

Phillips also thanked  Anthony Harford and All Sport Production for their tireless efforts and vital contribution in making the National Super League one of the biggest and most exciting senior level league competition in the Caribbean. All Sports will not run the operations of the League this season, with the TTFA now overseeing it.

In light of Tobago’s four-team participation in the league and hosting of several matches in the sister-isle, Phillips also thanked  the Tobago House of Assembly, Chairman Orville London, Secretary of Education, Sports, Culture, Youth Affairs, Huey Cadette, Assistant Secretary, Jomo Pitt, and members of the Tobago Football Association, particularly its President Raymond Alleyne and General Secretary, Everton Alfred for their contribution in elevating Tobago football.

Super League commissioner Neville Ferguson disclosed that each team will play 15 matches in the First Round and the Second Round will see two groups comprising of one made up of the top eight teams and another group with the remaining eight teams on the league table following the first round.

“There is a in fact a lot to look forward to as we expect there to be a buzz of activity and high interest in this season’s competition. We’re looking at teams from throughout the country and various communities engaging in football matches on Wednesdays and Sundays of each week,” Ferguson said.

“Over the years, the National Super League has made a significant contribution to the development and improvement of football in Trinidad and Tobago and with the collective good will of the football community, the National Super League will certainly develop to be the “flagship” Football League in Trinidad and Tobago.”

As for the Super League, this year will be interesting, the TTFA running it and they cannot even get their house in order, we'll see.

Expect a lot of postponement like the Pro League.

The league was officially launch yesterday and all they could come up with is a one week fixtures.

So for someone who might be on vacation and wants to take on some football, wouldn't know where, when and who is playing.

So who will be doing match reports, photos, updating fixtures, recording stats, sending out updates, etc etc, Shaun?

I know Richard Piper did a decent job.

Which would accord with 16 teams playing each other once :(

TTFA needs to clarify this new format. I really don't understand why the second round is in that format. Unless they having a short season.

FOUR Tobago National Super League clubs will have an easier time making the trip to Trinidad for matches after the Tobago House of Assembly pledged their support for the clubs this season. Stokely Vale, 1976 Phoenix, Bethel United and newcomers D'Lime Goal City will represent Tobago in the expanded blink bmobile National Super League this year.

Huey Cadette, the TFA Secretary of Education, Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, announced: “This year we have gone further than what we would have done in the past, just provide registration,” Cadette said. “We will provide support with some equipment that will allow you to prepare successfully, and also we will provide some cash support that will allow you to take care of what ever incidental expenses is required to compete and operate in the Super League.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) is running the Super League for the first time, following the pullout of Anthony Harford and All Sport Production, the long-serving former organisers.

At the launch on Thursday, Super League commissioner Neville Ferguson disclosed that each team will play 15 matches in the first round. The second round will then see the top eight teams competing for honours in a group of eight, while the remaining eight teams will battle to avoid relegation.

“There is in fact a lot to look forward to as we expect there to be a buzz of activity and high interest in this season’s competition. We’re looking at teams from throughout the country and various communities engaging in football matches on Wednesdays and Sundays of each week,” said Ferguson. Good to see 16 teams in the league. Shame about the Tobago flights, could cause a problem later as many players have jobs and will find it difficult to play midweek games.

Really would have liked to see Guaya, Sando and Malabar in the Pro League.

WASA FC back on top in Super League.
T&T Guardian Reports.

After a largely uninspired campaign last year, 2012 league champion WASA FC continued its strong start to the TTFA National Super League season on Sunday with a 6-0 whipping of reigning title holder Guaya United, in both teams’ second match.

The result saw back-to-back wins for WASA FC, while Guaya suffered its second loss.

Keron Clarke, who scored a brace in last Wednesday’s season-opening (3-2) win over La Horquetta SA, was at it again scoring two goals in the first half, while former T&T international forward Gary Glasgow, who scored on the opening day also scored a double on Sunday.

Sheldon Nesbitt and Ethan Robinson scored the two other goals for the Waterboys. Guaya, which will compete in this year’s Pro League competition has fielded a less-than full strength team in this year’s competition.

Meanwhile, last season’s runner-up, Club Sando, which defeated Guaya 2-1 on Wednesday, played to a 3-3 draw with Petrotrin Palo Seco, which also won its opening fixture.

Club Sando opted to play the match despite the sudden death of one of its players, Marcus Lawrence, who died while training with the club on Friday. Club Sando led the match twice but conceded a penalty in the 90th minute from Shackiel Henry, which resulted in a stalemate.

The goal was also Henry’s second from as many matches.

Meanwhile, Stokely Vale got the better of Bethel United, 2-0, as the two Tobago clubs kicked off their campaigns, while Siparia Spurs sealed its first win (3-1) over 2011 champion Joe Public. In other results, Defence Force and FC Santa Rosa played to a 1-1 draw, simultaneously with newly promoted La Horquetta SA’s 2-1 win over Real Maracas.

Again, two matches (Las Lomas versus Goal City and Malabar versus 1976 FC Phoenix) were unable to play due to difficulties in securing flight accommodation. However, all matches carded for Wednesday are carded to play. All postponed matches will be played after this weekend.

Super League $ uncertain.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Four hundred thousand dollars ($400,000) in prizes for the 2013 season of the National Super League have not yet been paid, and prize money for the current Super League season is not yet guaranteed since, for the  first time in seven years, title sponsors bmobile have not yet given a commitment to the semi-professional second tier of local football.

Yesterday,  Super League commissioner Neville Ferguson confirmed that the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association had not yet completed a deal with sponsors TSTT to cover this season.

“They (TSTT) haven’t come on board as yet.” Ferguson said. “We are negotiating. But we hope to get them on board soon.”

Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago have funded  the prize money for the Super League for the last seven years, while the competition was under the management of All Sport Promotions, run by Anthony Harford.

The 2013 season saw TSTT, which owns the brand name bmobile, pumping $500,000 in prize money into the competition, with the champions Guaya United winning $200,000, runners-up Club Sando winning $100,000, third-placed Malabar winning $75,000 and $25,000 going to the fourth-placed 1976 F.C.Phoenix.

This is the first year the competition is being run by the TTFA, since All Sport gave up the franchise due to a breakdown in its relationship with the Ministry of Sport, another sponsor, which paid inter-island airfare for teams travelling between Trinidad and Tobago for matches.

In giving up the Super League, Harford claimed that the Sport Ministry had not honoured travel arrangements for two years, and without such funds  it had become difficult to run the league.   The Express learnt that All-Sport had not yet paid prizes for 2013.

“We have written to all the clubs informing them that we will pay the prizes in three months,” Harford said.

Since taking over the Super League, commissioner Ferguson admitted that  the League has had its own inter-island travel problems this season. There has also been no cross-seas travel between teams from Trinidad and Tobago and that the first two rounds of matches involving such teams have been cancelled. But, Ferguson  assured that such problems will be worked out by the next round of games.

“The League has to go on,” Ferguson declared. “For the time being we are taking care of  travel ourselves. But we do have a promise from the Government of reimbursement.”

Ferguson said the main problems was Caribbean Airlines flights.

“We cannot get seats on the aircraft,” Commissioner  Ferguson said. “We tried to get seats and they wanted the team to go across, I  think quarter past two in the morning, and also overnight. That didn’t make sense.”

“This weekend we have two games, one Trinidad team going over to Tobago and one Tobago team coming to Trinidad. I expect that everything would be fine,” Ferguson said. “We have given them (CAL) the schedule for the entire first round and we are now on top of that

Henry bags third goal as Palo Seco goes top
T&T Guardian

Teenaged sensation Shackiel Henry scored his third goal in as many matches and his second straight in time added on to lead newly promoted Petrotrin Palo Seco to the top of the TTFA National SUper League (NSL) standings following the club’s 3-2 win over previous leader WASA FC.

Palo Seco hosted WASA at the Palo Seco Velodrome, where the Southern Football Association champions almost conceded its first loss, but for a late equalising goal from former Pro League striker Sylvester Teesdale and Henry’s winner in the dying moments.

Darren Alexis opened the scoring for the new league leader in the 12th minute, before his effort was cancelled out by Kareem Freitas on the half-hour mark.

Then, on the stroke of half time, Cleveland Cambridge gave WASA the lead.

In other results, 1976 FC Phoenix was one of four teams to kick start their campaigns and the only one to secure an opening win.

The club defeated Stokely Vale 2-1 in a Tobago derby, while Coosal’s Las Lomas suffered a 1-0 loss to FC Santa Rosa. D’Lime Bar Goal City and Malabar FC also started their league challenge with a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, last season’s runner-up Club Sando returned to winning ways following a draw a week prior, with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over rock-bottom Joe Public.

Manuel Rezende scored for Joe Public in the 44th minute, before Nigel Daniel and Nemuel Rivers handed Club Sando the three points with goals in the 73rd and 82nd minutes, respectively.

Club Sando now sits second on seven points, behind Palo Seco on goal difference. Joe Public remains grounded on the foot of the table with its third straight loss.

Alexis brace lifts Petrotrin Palo Seco clear in Super League
T&T Guardian

Darren Alexis scored a first-half brace as Petrotrin Palo Seco whipped Real Maracas 4-1 at Maracas Recreation Ground, St Joseph on Sunday to open a one point lead at the top of the 16-team T&T Football Association National Super League standing.

Petrotrin Palo Seco started the day as joint leaders with Club Sando, both win seven points after three matches, however Alexis quickly sounded his team’s intentions to take the outright lead when he fired in the opener after six minutes while he made it 2-0 in the 24th before Marvin Manswell reduced the deficit for the host, in the 33rd for a 2-1 half-time score.

On the resumption, the visitors restored their two-goal cushion via Corey Cyrus in the 58th while former national striker, Sylvester Teesdale, added a fourth item, seven minutes from the final whistle.

The win carried Petrotrin Palo Seco to ten points after four matches, one more than WASA FC, which edged Club Sando 1-0 at its St Joseph Ground via a strike from Keron Clarke to leapfrog its opponent who slipped to third with Siparia Spurs, 2-1 winners over Coosal’s Las Lomas United.

WASA stop Club Sando
T&T Newsday

WASA seemed to have put together a winning combo this season, with former Trinidad and Tobago national players Stern John and Gary Glasgow playing in midfield, and another outstanding former national defender “ Marvellous” Marvin Faustin running the show as head coach.

WASA also had the experience of former San Juan Jabloteh striker Kerry Noray and ex-Joe Public and Caledonia AIA goalkeeper Michael Woods to draw upon on the bench.

Champions two season’s ago, the “Water Boys” moved second in the National Super League with a third victory in four matches, following their 1-0 win over previous joint-leaders Club Sando late Sunday at St Joseph. Second last year, Club Sando lost for the first time this season.  Also playing under lights, Petrotrin Palo Seco kept the competition’s lead by a point from WASA, after whipping weaker opposition and home team Real Maracas 4-1 a little further up the hill.

Given the recent deaths of local footballers Akeem Adams, Kevon Carter and most recently 20-year-old Club Sando player Marcus Lawrence to heart conditions, the only questionable decision Faustin made on Sunday, was allowing his team captain and capable central defender Akil Hartley to return to the field, after going down clutching his chest in pain about 10 minutes from the end. From all accounts, it is a recurring condition. Hartley returned to the action and again collapsed clutching his chest after the final whistle.

WASA led just five minutes into the action, with the lone goal coming from the boot of Keron Clarke, last season’s top scorer in the East Zone, and the player acquired from Super League newcomers NLCB La Horquetta SC.  Clarke beat former Joe Public and North East Stars keeper Andre Marchan with a low shot to the far post, for his fifth goal in four matches for his new team.

John looked slightly bulky and less mobile, but was still able to play well enough. The former English Premier League striker forced a good low save from Marchan midway through the half, and also won a free-kick when the Sando keeper took him out on the edge of the penalty area.

Favourites to win the Super League this season, Club Sando probably edged overall possession, but produced few dangerous moments for Glenroy Samuel, the former T&T Under-20 World Cup goalkeeper. Samuel made one block when striker  Andre Quashie broke clear from wide, and there was a big penalty shout from the traveling Club Sando fans, for a handle-ball incident in the second session. Once again, the referee awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Coach Anthony Streete, screamed for “width” from his star-studded Club Sando team, which contained several players with Pro League experience such as Nigel Daniel (San Juan Jabloteh), Anthony Parris (W Connection), Kemul Rivers (W Connection), Andre Quashie (W Connection), Kern Cupid (W Connection), Keron Smith (W Connection), Simeon Augustus (United Petrotrin), as well as former schoolboy Akeem Humprey (Naparima College).

But for all their endeavour, Club Sando mainly failed to break through sturdy WASA defending.

Former St Ann’s Rangers captain and Sando left-midfielder Devon Modeste, probably deserved a yellow card for violently booting the ball away when caught offside, but  seeing the player’s frustration, the match official chose to be lenient.

WASA on top
...Stern John scores first for season
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Former Trinidad and Tobago national and Birmingham City (English Premier League) striker Stern John opened his account for the season when leading WASA to the top of the National Super League.

John, Trinidad and Tobago’s all-time record goal-scorer at international level, netted the third goal for WASA which scored a 4-0  win over Joe Public at the Marvin Lee Stadium on Wednesday.

They have now leap-frogged Petrotrin Palo Seco (11 points) by a point, after the previous leaders were held 2-2 by Bethel United of Tobago. John showed the experience of his days playing with Birmingham City, when despite the attention of an eager, young defender Kerron Reid, he flicked a cross low across the dive of Joe Public keeper Vaughn Charles to the far corner.

And at age 37, despite having seen it all during his ten years playing in England, John seemed no less thrilled at scoring.  Four victories in five matches puts WASA  atop the table with 12 points, followed by Petrotrin on 11 and last year’s runner-up Club Sando on ten points.

Club Sando recovered fom Sunday’s slender 1-0 defeat to WASA with an uncomfortable 4-2 away win over Real Maracas. Club Sando appeared to have matters well in hand when leading 3-0 through goals from Kern Cupid (43rd), Kerron Mitchell (58th), and Akeem Humphrey (65th).

But spured on by their fans, the home team rallied with goals from Shaquille Smith (77th) and Dillon Bartholomew (88th) to pull themselves back into the game to be down 3-2 at one point. It took  Andre Quashie’s injury time item to finally kill off Real Maracas.

WASA seeks to open four point Super League gap.
T&T Guardian Reports.

League leader WASA FC will be keen on taking the opportunity to open a four-point gap ahead of second-placed Petrotrin Palo Seco, when the club hosts a winless Real Maracas at WASA Ground, St Joseph, from 5 pm today, in one of three TTFA National Super League matches on the cards.

Only three of the eight originally scheduled matches will be played due to problems seeking flights for three Tobago clubs which were carded to travel to Trinidad and one club from Trinidad, Guaya United, which was scheduled travel to Tobago. FC Santa Rosa’s meeting with NLCB La Horquetta SA has also been postponed.

As a result, WASA FC, which lost one and won four matches after five rounds, will enjoy some breathing space with a win over Real Maracas, which has just one point after four matches. The latter club sits above defending champion Guaya United and Joe Public on goal difference.

The Waterboys, who finished fourth from bottom in the standings last season made a strong start to the new campaign and are off a comfortable 4-0 away win over Joe Public. Former national striker Stern John was on target in the midweek fixture. Real Maracas, meanwhile, is off a 4-2 loss to Club Sando.

The two other matches today will see Coosal’s Las Lomas travel to the Marvin Lee Stadium to face Joe Public, from 4 pm, simultaneously with a clash between Defence Force and Malabar FC, respectively. The Teteron Boys are unbeaten in sixth spot, while the highly-rated Malabar FC team has yet to find consistency with a win, a loss and a draw. Malabar sits tenth in the standings.

All but one match day has been affected by issues sealing flights for teams travelling between Trinidad and Tobago thus far. The date of postponed matches are yet to be announced.

So I'm really slow, but what happened to Westside Superstarz this year? Are they back in the NFA?

Lack of sponsorship $$$ forces Westside Superstarz on sidelines
Andrew  Gioannetti - TT Guardian

After three consecutive years of participating in the National Super League, during which significant spells were spent as a title contender, Westmoorings-based Westside Superstarz’s financial struggles have ultimately affected it to the very core.

The club’s technical director Nigel Grosvenor speaking yesterday revealed a number of issues which contributed to the withdrawal of the club from this year’s NSL competition.

“No, no, no. We are not disbanded; we are just stagnant at the moment,” Grosvenor said as he explained the club’s inability to raise the $50,000 registration fee as the primary reason for sitting out this year.

“We tried all how to raise the money. When the league was run under All Sport Promotions, they would have given an extention (to pay the registration fee) if need be. We asked the league (now fully administered by the T&T Football Association) for an extention, but they wanted the money right on time.

“They (All Sport) were more sympathetic to certain situations regarding unsponsored teams. They would deal with clubs on a one-on-one basis. We tried a boat cruise and many other ways to raise funds just for the registration, but it didn’t work out.”

However, raising funds for the regular registration fee was not the only major financial concern for the club as it would also be required to seek funding for ground transportation and sometimes accommodation when it played matches in Tobago, as well as food for the players when they were on a long journey.

Participating this year would have been even more difficult given increase to four clubs from Tobago. Grosvenor said during the three years in the league since its promotion from the Northern Football Association in 2011, Westside Superstarz operated without a sponsor. The club also managed to field successful youth teams in national competitions.

Asked why the club struggled to find a corporate partner, Grosvenor said unlike most clubs in the Super League which identify with specific communities, Westside was “broader and more inclusive” and represented many towns and communities in western Trinidad including Bagatelle, Petit Valley, Carenage, Cocorite, St James and others.

This, he said was enough cause for potential sponsors to take notice as it opened an avenue for footballers who may otherwise have been led astray. However, he admitted that it may have worked at the club’s disadvantage. Grosvenor said a change in the club’s name was not being considered as it epitomizes its inclusiveness.

“While some communities were known for their warring with others in surrounding areas, it would not affect the players and the football at Westside. When they came, they put everything aside and they played together. We tried to show this to the potential sponsors. They disappointed us.”

Grosvenor said he personally visited the Sport Company of T&T (SporTT) in quest for financial assistance but the special purpose state enterprise provided only footballs. He said he explored other avenues to attempt to attain state funding but “everything was politics”. Even going through Opposition Leader and Diego Martin West MP Dr Keith Rowley could not result in the required assistance. He said he found it strange that some clubs could stand to benefit from state funding but not others.

Another problem for Westside was its inability to retain its top players. Attracting quality players was never an issue for the club. Grosvenor, who is also longstanding head coach at St Anthony’s College, said usually at least six of his best players would leave the club after the start of the NSL season for Pro League clubs once the transfer window opened, following which it would normally and understandably face a dip in form. Westside had nothing to benefit from the transfers as the players were not under contract and were offered salaries by the professional teams.

The result of these issued is for the club to hang up the boots, at least temporarily. Grosvenor was advised that even if it was in a position to return to the league financially, Westside would be required to gain promotion from the NFA, an idea not fancied by the director. Grosvenor said there are intentions by the club to create an academy style system for youth in the area in the future but there are merely ideas for it at the moment.

In concluding, Grosvenor said fans and well wishers of the club should not worry as there will eventually be a return to represent the west in the future.

Sorry to hear about that. Unfortunately some of the most wealthiest people in the country live on that side and Nigel could not even pursuade them to help with the registration fee. Thing real bad for football team. But I do hope he keep the name. Fooball clubs now have to embrace 3 and 4 communities to expand the fan base. Rangers should think about it.

The irony of the TTFA wanting $$$ right on time ... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Joe Public withdraws from Super League, EFA.
T&T Guardian Reports.

When the T&T Football Association (TTFA) National Super League resumes on Sunday, one of the most recognisable teams in the country, Joe Public, will be absent from the fixture list.

The club gave the TTFA notice of its withdrawal from the National Super League and the Eastern Football Association (EFA) First Division, on Wednesday.

Contacted yesterday, the club’s general manager, Sam Phillips, said he was not in a position to reveal detailed information regarding the circumstances of the club’s withdrawal, but he did confirm that the reason was primarily financial.

Joe Public was only one of two teams (league leader WASA FC the other) to play six matches this season, more than any other club. It managed just one draw and five losses.

The club finished second from bottom last season and only remained in the Super League because of the league’s expansion. The zonal EFA team also struggled this and last season. The club was relegated from the EFA Premier Division last season and sat at the bottom of the First Division standings at the time of its withdrawal, with two opening losses.

Prior to last year’s troubled campaign, the club was regarded among the strongest in the country.

Most recently, the club captured the National Super League treble in the 2011/2012 season, winning the league, knockout and Christmas Cup competitions, then finished runner-up in the league to WASA FC the season after.

Joe Public’s Super League treble winning season came within the same year it withdrew from the TT Pro League. It secured three Pro League titles (1998, 2006 and 2009), two FA trophy titles and two CFU Club Championships titles in 1998 and 2000. It joined the country’s top tier football league in 1997, a year after its establishment by Jack Warner, former vice president at Fifa and TTFF special advisor.

A manager at the club suggested that the club’s coaching school will remain in operation.

TTFA general secretary, Sheldon Phillips advised that the TTFA’s Tournaments and Competitions Committee will review the matter to alter the current standings and upcoming fixtures. The adjusted standings is expected to be released before the league’s resumption on Sunday.

For the club to rejoin the Super League, it will be required to enter the EFA’s First Division and gain promotion to the Premier Division, before playing the Champions of Champions Super League qualifiers.

In the club’s prime, it boasted the services of current national captain Kenwyne Jones and former T&T international players Kerry Baptiste, Brent Sancho, Arnold Dwarika, Cyd Gray and others.

I find this news real sad. Obviously, the Warner connection at the club has turned many against Joe Public. But a club should be bigger than any individual. It's a real shame that such a pivotal club will no longer be part of the future of T&T football.

There is a relatively short history of T&T professional football and it's important to continue club names and traditions to create a legacy.

Most notable is that JP were the only club who actually have a home stadium.

But you also have to accept that the club was a poor business model like many others in T&T. One man in charge, one man funding it, no attempt to bring on board directors or sponsors. A recipe for failure that is still being used as a blueprint.

But, I feel, a sad day for football.

Clarke double keeps WASA ahead.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Keron Clarke netted a goal in each half as WASA edged past Siparia Spurs at WASA Ground, St Joseph, to stay top of the T&T Football Federation National Super League on Sunday.

Clarke opened the scoring for the host in the 19th minute, but Spurs got back on even terms in the 25th for a 1–1 half-time score, before Clarke’s second item in the 57th secured all three points for his team.

With the win, WASA remained top of the table with 19 points from eight matches, three clear of Club Sando, which clobbered host T&T Defence Force 4–2 in Macqueripe, Chaguaramas.

Club Sando took the lead as early as the sixth minute, but a minute before the break, Ronald “Sharky” St Louis converted a penalty for Defence Force.

The Southerners regained the lead in the 58th minute, however Michael Edwards replied for Defence Force four minutes later for a 2–2 scoreline.

Sandy then restored Club Sando’s lead for the third time in the 71st and ten minutes later Kevon Woodley added a fourth item for to halt any chance of a comeback by the host. In two other key matches, defending champions Guaya United and Coosal’s Las Lomas United both won to join Petrotrin Palo Seco and La Horquetta on 14 points each.

Guaya got a goal two minutes into injury from Beville Joseph, his second of the match to snatch a 3–2 away win at Malabar FC, while Las Lomas pipped Petrotrin Palo Seco 1–0 in a Ray Collymore 53rd-minute strike.

Today, La Horquetta, which had the weekend off, will have a chance to go second on the table when it travels to Canaan Ground, Bon Accord, Tobago, for a 4 pm meeting with struggling 1976 Phoenix, second from bottom of the 15-team table with four points, same as Goal City and one more than another Tobago club, Bethel United.

WASA edge Spurs 2-1
By Ian Prescott (Express)

Striker Keron Clarke scored on either side of halftime, to give WASA a 2-1 victory over Siparia Spurs in the National Super League on Sunday at WASA ground, St Joseph. It turned out to be a far more difficult task for leaders WASA, who took a 1-0 lead when Clarke added a low finish onto a inside pass from the midfielder in the 19th minute.

But, gaining victory was far more difficult, as Spurs proved difficult opponent in the first half where they hit the post and forced a couple point-blank saves from WASA goalie Glenroy Samuels. Jesse Edward soon pulled Spurs level at 1-1 in the 25th minute, with a low shot in the penalty area.

Both teams went for the points in the second half. Stern John broke a window, but missed the entire goal when powerfully shooting to goal. But John, Trinidad and Tobago’s record scorer at international level, set up WASA’S winner with a short pass behind the defenders, which Clarke hit first time off the cross bar for the winning goal in the 57th minute.

Even then, it took an acrobatic flying tip from goalie Glenroy Samuel to deny Spurs a late equaliser. Daniel Garcia’ shot from atop the penalty area, dipped wickedly and looked certain to score until the WASA keeper’s intervention.

With them gorn, is like a fresh breeze is blowing back again into T&T football at all levels. People are noticing too. Never ever again must we go back to those dark Jackula days.

Super League teams battle against relegation playoff.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Coosal’s Las Lomas will be seeking full points today in an effort to avoid the relegation playoffs, when the Central club makes the trip to Guaya United in the last series of matches in the first round of the T&T Football Association (TTFA) National Super League.

Las Lomas United, sitting in tenth spot on 18 points, will need to climb up at least two spots at the end of today’s round of matches to stand a chance at finishing among the top eight teams.

Six regular league matches will be played today, before another two rescheduled fixtures on Wednesday brings a close to the first round. When each of the 15 teams complete their 14 matches, the standings will be split into two with the top eight teams playing a Championship round-robin.

The bottom seven teams will play in a separate group to determine the three relegated teams and the four to remain in next year’s competition.

Thus, even if Club Sando, leading by five points, finishes atop the standings by the end of Wednesday’s fixtures, it will still be required to start over and replay the second to eighth-placed team to challenge for the title.

Teams fighting relegation. Relegation from what? Promotion to what? So what? What exactly is your motivation?

The TTFA has no money. The people in charge of the TTFA and the so called Super League have no clue. Your purpose for being in this league has no reason or rhyme. And your every day existence could end on a penny or a dime. What is your motivation? It doesn't matter. Even if you win this so called SUPER LEAGUE, what league are you being promoted to? What does it mean? Even if you get promoted to the so called pro league, historically, your existence in that league is either short lived or non-existential. Whichever way you want to look at it, it spells disaster. What is your motivation? Nobody gives a damn. Mano y Mano. Jack Warner, with all his money, couldn't save your miserable existence. People are making money off of this situation and nobody realizes what is really going on here.

What is your motivation?

I'm fairly certain that teams are relegated to zonal football and the wining teams can join the ProLeague if they can prove financial stability. In fact, I believe that Club Sando actually declined to join the ProLeague so that they could hopefully win promotion this year when they would have organised their finances.

Club Sando edges Petrotrin Palo Seco for Super League title.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Devon Modeste and Mickel Charles got a goal each as Club Sando came from behind to beat Petrotrin Palo Seco 2-1 to take the T&T Football Association (TTFA) National Super League Group A “Big Eight” crown.

Starting Sunday’s penultimate round of matches with maximum 15 points from five matches, five more than Spurs and Defence Force, Club Sando only needed a draw and its two main rivals to slip up to lift the crown.

However, hosts Petrotrin Palo Seco stunned the visitors when Corey Cyrus banged in the opener in the 26th.

But just when it seemed Petrotrin Palo Seco would take the lead into the break, Modeste drew Club Sando level, and in the second-half, Charles got the decisive item in the 68th to secure the three points. The win carried Club Sando to maximum 18 points from six matches, seven clear of Defence Force and eight ahead of Spurs with a match left for each club.

Defence Force was held 1-1 by Guaya United at Guaya to move to 11 points, while Spurs were blanked 3-0 by former champions, WASA at Fyzabad Recreation Ground in the other Group A matches played. Meanwhile, in the Group B “Relegation Big-Eight” round-robin series previous top two, FC Santa Rosa and D’Lime Goal City were both beaten.

At the Maracas Recreation Ground, Real Maracas pipped Goal City 2-1 to go trop of the seven-team table with nine points from five matches, the same as FC Santa Rosa, which has a match in hand and superior goal-difference.

Over in Tobago, Bethel United blanked FC Santa Rosa 2-0 to hand the latter its first loss in four matches while Stokely Vale joined Las Lomas and Bethel United with six points after crushing Malabar 7-0 at Plymouth.

At the end of the six-match round-robin schedule, the bottom two clubs will join already relegated Joe Public as teams heading back to their respective zonal association competitions at the expense of the three teams to be promoted from the T&T Football Association “Champion of Champions” competition.

Intriguing battle to avoid relegation in Super League
Tobago News

The curtain will come down on the National Super League which commenced last year on Sunday with the final round of games in both the first and second tier of the Second Phase of the Tournament.

Teams in the first tier are battling for lucrative cash prizes, while teams in the second tier are in a dogfight to avoid relegation.

The battle to avoid relegation may be decided today according to what happened in the games which were played last Wednesday. However, up to presstime the results of these games were not available.

Malabar FC with one point will definitely be returning to their zone, but four teams including the three Tobago teams; D’Lime Bar Goal City, Stokely Vale and Bethel United must win their two remaining games or one or both of them will be returning to the Tobago Football League.

Today (Sunday) Stokely Vale FC will be at home against D’Lime Bar Goal City at the Plymouth Recreation Ground. Both teams must win this game to have a hope of returning.

D’Lime Bar Goal City are on seven points and Stokely Vale on six, while Bethel United which are also on six points will entertain Coosal Las Lomas.

Last Sunday, Bethel United upset Santa Rosa FC 2-1, while the Stokely Vale powered their way past Malabar FC 7-0 and D’Lime Bar Goal City were edged 2-1 by Real Maracas.

Against Malabar FC, Stokely Vale entertained their home crowd with a good brand of attacking football and solid defence as they were in total control from start to finish.

They got their first goal from Trevonne James after six minutes when he collected a loose ball and scored. Five minutes later, Krishawn Joseph hit a bullet from a difficult angle to beat the goalkeeper and in the 33rd minute Travis Winchester hit a rocket from about 30 metres out that flew into the net. In the 44th minute Dominic McDugal scored to give his team a four -nil half time lead.

On the resumption, Phoenix continued to dominate their opponents and scored three more goals, a double from Omar Charles, while James completed his brace with a 73rd minute item.

Bethel held their opponent, Santa Rosa FC up to the 73rd minute, but two goals in four minutes gave the visitors the victory at at the Mt Pleasant Recreation Ground.

Real Maracas stopped D’Lime Bar Goal City 2-1. Akini Ferguson scored for the losers.

In the First Tier 1976 Phoenix FC which were idle last Sunday are on seven points the same as WASA FC with a game in hand. They played NLCB La Horquetta in Trinidad last Wednesday and will be at home to table toppers, Club Sando today (Sunday). An upset victory today will give them a top four finish.
