CONCACAF president says Gold Cup could move outside the USA

Could the CONCACAF Gold Cup be headed off of US soil?

It certainly appears that way after comments made by Jeffrey Webb on Friday in Mexico, where the CONCACAF president told media that he’s interested in spreading the biennial tournament around the region.

The United States has played at least a co-host role for every edition of the tournament since its inception in 1991, including serving as the outright host each of the past five tournaments. The US and Mexico co-hosted the games 2003 and 1993.

The American-centric views on MLS soccer are (I suppose not all that) shocking - all these claims about "bad stadiums" and "low attendance", they don't know crap. Half of these Central American nations will get more people through the door than the MLS and the Gold Cup consistently has half-empty stadiums. With funding and support for infrastructure, Haiti could fill every single game - they have probably the highest attendances in the Caribbean, and that level of investment kills two problems with one cheque in a country recovering from an earthquake. We've had World Cups in less stable nations than them (Argentina 1978 anyone? And Chile 1962 came 2 years after an earthquake), so Haiti for Gold Cup 2019! :)

Tiresais, I think is time the tournament move to other countries in the region and used to happen previously. TT hosted it in 73(I think). Not all the games were well attended, but the attendance was not bad. The US has good crowd(Ithink) because of the large immigrant population. Mex, El Sal, Hondo. Even Pan and JA  does support well. The tournament do make quite a bit of money.  But it is overdue for a change in venue. And I think he US will host the Centennial South America, the GC may be hosted in another country. Probably MEx.

Totally agree - We need more diversity in the Gold Cup, it needs to promote the sport more.

He's said this already in 2012.

"We have to look at other options and opportunities. We have to look at Canada ... we must look at Mexico and some of the other countries as well," said Webb.

"We have to. We are not going to approach it saying that it has to, it must, continue in the United States. I think we have a responsibility to all 40 countries to look at what is best for CONCACAF."

It stands to reason that it'll be Canada or Mexico. The other nations (excluding U.S.) have already begun their qualifying campaign.

Mexico would be a better bet, if they can allay security fears.
