W Connection, Central get set to tackle the rest of the Caribbean in CONCACAF Champions League qualifying.
ttproleague.com.

CFU unveils Club Championship fixtures, Connection to host Group 2 in Trinidad but Central must travel to Guyana for Group 1

Reigning Digicel Pro League champions W Connection and current league leaders Central FC will head separate routes in the group stage of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship 2015, which serves as the qualifier tournament for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Fifteen (15) amateur and professional clubs from the CFU are separated into four (4) groups but the two Pro League rivals could cross paths in the semi-final stage if they advance out of the group stage.

The Group stage will be contested between April 15 – 19, while the semi-final and final round will be contested between April 22-24 to decide the Caribbean Club champions and to determine three Caribbean berths at the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League.

Connection, three-time Caribbean Club Champions (2001, 2002 & 2009) and seven-time finalists, will host Antigua and Barbuda champions SAP FC, Jamaica’s Waterhouse FC and Guyana Defence Force to make up Group 2 in Trinidad.

While Central, last season's DPL second place finishers, will debut at the CCL in Group 1, hosted in Guyana, and includes home team and Guyana National Super League champions Alpha United and Suriname’s powerhouse Inter Moengotapoe.

Inter Moengotapoe have won the Surinamese Voetbal Bond's Hoofdklasse – the country's top league – 6 times in the last eight seasons, while Alpha United have won five GFF NSL titles in recent years.

In 2011 Alpha defeated Trinidad and Tobago’s Defence Force in the third place play-off of the Caribbean Club Championship to create history as the first ever Guyanese club to earn a CCL berth.

Alpha United, Jamaica’s Waterhouse FC and Puerto Rico’s Bayamon FC represented the CFU in the Group stage of the current CCL after progressing out of last season’s Caribbean Club Championship ahead of Trinidad and Tobago clubs Defence Force and Caledonia AIA.

Trinidad and Tobago was last represented by W Connection and Caledonia in the 2013-2014 CCL.

Haiti meanwhile will host Group 3 and 4 of this season’s Caribbean Club Championship.

Haiti league (opening stage) champions America FC, Jamaica champions Montego Bay United, SV Excelsior of Suriname, and Club Sportif Moulien of Guadeloupe are pooled in Group 3.

While Haiti league (second stage) champions Don Bosco FC, Helenites Sporting Club of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Unite Sainte Rose of Guadeloupe and Lyford Cay FC of Bahamas make up Group 4.

The winning team from each group will advance to the semi-final round with the winners of Group 1 and 2 to contest semi-final one, and the winners of Group 3 and 4 to contest semi-final two.

Both head coaches of W Connection and Central FC expressed their confidence of winning a place in the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League while attempting to capture the Caribbean crown.

“I am confident that we will play well,” said Central FC head coach Zoran Vranes. “I am satisfied [with the draw]. I think we have good chance. We expect to advance of course. We are strong enough to get past the group stage but it is definitely a challenge with the [domestic] league and competitions. We have guys who we can rotate so others can get rest because it's really tough to play three games in one week without rest. But it's the same for everybody so the team that are better prepared, and who are better, will succeed.”

Connection longstanding and very successful coach Stuart Charles Fevrier, who is no stranger to the Caribbean Club Championship and the CONCACAF Champions League, said the main goal is to qualify for the CCL for the club and by extension Trinidad and Tobago.

“To qualify you must play the best teams in the Caribbean,” the Connection coach said. “So whoever we play isn't really important to me. It's just that we need to really prepare well for the CFU because we want to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.

“I think we are capable. We have a good squad although it's a young squad. We have confidence in our squad and our objective is to qualify for CONCACAF not only for our club but for Trinidad and Tobago also.

“We would like to win the [CFU crown] but our main objective is to qualify for CONCACAF because the last time around no team from Trinidad (and Tobago) were able to qualify. We definitely want to get back to where we were as a country and as a league. We always had teams playing in the CONCACAF Champions League and we want to represent the country and by extension the league,” ended Fevrier.

Good luck to both teams reppin the red, white and black. These tournaments give us insight on how our club league fear against other leagues in CONCACAF.  Our best two challenging the best from other leagues. Hopefully we can progress from the group stage.

Sharks hoping to bite in Guyana.
Central F.C. Media Press Release.

Central F.C. spokesman, Kevin Jeffrey said “Of course, any game at this level will have its challenges, but the team is confident of winning through to the final round.”

The final round will be played between 20th and 24th May at a venue to be decided, with the winners from each of the four groups competing for three CONCACAF Champions League places.

“Strangely, it will be harder to qualify for the final round than qualify for CONCACAF” said Jeffrey “In the final round you can lose a game and still qualify in the 3rd place play off, but in the group stage, a loss will almost certainly mean you will not progress.”

The California based club will be travelling with a full squad and every player is Trinidadian. “We have to focus on our next Pro League game against Point Fortin on April 24th” explained Jeffrey “One or two players are carrying slight injuries so we will leave them at home to recuperate ready for the Point Fortin game.”

One more Pro League victory will almost certainly see the league title go to Central F.C. for the first time as they currently have a 6 point lead over second place W.Connection who have a game in hand. However, Central have a goal difference of plus 14 over Connection.

“It’s a good position to be in with two games remaining” said Jeffrey, who pointed out that this is only the clubs third season since it was formed. “The squad we will carry is full of experience and goals, so we know that we will be tough opposition in Guyana. But most importantly, this is a great experience for the players and the club and will stand us in good stead for next year’s Caribbean Cup which we have already qualified for.”

Meanwhile, the Central F.C. staff and players who remain in T&T will have a busy week.

We will be holding try outs for our women’s team this week and more info can be obtained on the Central F.C. Fan Club facebook page. Some of our players will also be visiting schools in the Central region this week to promote the Central F.C. Chuck E. Cheese coaching school which will be taking place at Lange Park on Saturday mornings starting in May.”

Live match updates of both of Central F.C.’s games in Guyana will be available on the Central F.c. Fan Club facebook page from 4pm on the 17th & 19th April.

Central F.C. squad for Guyana: Jan-Michael Williams, Elton John, Kevon Villaroel, Akeem Benjamin, Leston Paul, Jason Marcano, Sean de Silva, Marvin Oliver, Darren Mitchell, Jamal Jack, Kaydion Gabriel, Keion Goodridge, Javon Sample, Marcelle Francois, Nathaniel Garcia, Willis Plaza, Ataullah Guerra and Dwight Quintero.

Waterhouse head for CFU Club Champs in T&T
BY HURBUN WILLIAMS Observer writer

A highly motivated 18-man Waterhouse FC squad, headed by striker Jermaine 'Tuffy' Anderson, will travel to Trinidad and Tobago where the team will participate in the 2015 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship, which begins tomorrow.

Some members of the squad are scheduled to depart Jamaica today, while a second and final set is expected to leave tomorrow for the twin-island republic.

Waterhouse, competing in Group Two of the preliminary round, will have little time to settle. They open against Antigua & Barbuda's SAP FC on the opening day at the Ato Boldon Stadium. Team Manager Keith Sailsman said the core of the squad will leave in the first batch.

DirectTV W Connection FC (T&T) and Guyana Defence Force (Guyana) are the other teams competing in the group.

It is the second season in succession that Waterhouse are competing in the CFU Club Championship. Last season's successful run saw them progressing to the CONCACAF Club Championship, where they performed creditably before being eliminated. Club captain and national goalkeeper Richard McCallum is looking for another positive showing and says there is the determination to go even a step further.

"Last year, for the CFU Club Championship, we went into the tournament very focused, well prepared with an intention to do well. What aided us was that most clubs in the region apparently did not know much about us in terms of competing effectively at that level. So we went in as the underdogs.

"This year, we are going in just as focused, but the level of [financial] support we had last year is missing this year. Nonetheless, our intention is to do just as good as we did last year, and hopefully we can take it much further," he said.

McCallum was asked to give the reason for his optimistic view.

"We have been doing a lot of preparatory work for the past three or four weeks with our coaches and physical trainers as well," he explained

A total of 15 clubs from across the CFU region will take part in the tournament. The group winners will advance to the final phase.

All matches in the four preliminary round groups will be played between April 15 and 20 April, while the final round is scheduled for May 20-25 in a straight knockout format. The winners will be crowned 2015 Caribbean champions. The top three teams at the CFU Club Championship will secure berths to the CONCACAF Champions League.

Group One -- Alpha United FC (Guy), Central FC (Tri), Inter Moengotapoe (Sur).

Group Two -- DirectTV W Connection FC (Tri), SAP FC (Atg), Guyana Defence Force (Guy), Waterhouse FC (Jam).

Group Three -- America FC (Hai), Montego Bay United FC (Jam), SV Excelsior (Sur), Club Sportif (Glp).

Group Four -- Don Bosco FC de Petion Ville (Hai), Helenites Sporting Club (Vir), Unite Sainte Rose (Glp), Lyford Cay FC (Bah).

Waterhouse contingent -- Keith Sailsman (head of delegation/manager); Anthony Patrick and Christopher Bender (coaches); Dr Romayne Edwards (physician); Chris Paul (physical trainer); Glenford Anderson (equipment manager).

Squad: Richard McCallum, George Brown, Nicholy Finlayson, Rohan Amos, Hughan Gray, Damarley Samuels, Evan Taylor, Jomoly Powell, Adoah Nickle, Tremaine Stewart, Andre Messam, DeAndre Brown, Omar Walcott, Oshane Roberts, Romario Campbell, Andre Leslie, Steffan Logan, Jermaine Anderson.

Injury rules Bentick of Central FC's CCL qualifiers.
ttproleague.com.

Central FC head coach Terry Fenwick must do without the services of former Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 World Cup defender, Uriah Bentick, when the “Couva Sharks” contest the Group stage of the 2015 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship, which serves as the qualifier tournament for the CONCACAF Champions League.

The 26-year-old Bentick picked up a knee (ligament) injury during a training session last week, forcing Fenwick to summon 27-year-old Kevon Villaroel, who has Caribbean Club Championship and CONCACAF Champions League experience with ex-employers Puerto Rico Islanders of the North American Soccer League (NASL).

Villaroel completed the Central FC 18-man squad, which includes goalkeepers Jan-Michael Williams and Javon Sample; defenders Akeem Benjamin, Kaydion Gabriel, Keion Goodridge, Marcelle Francois and Elton John; midfielders Marvin Oliver, Jamal Jack, Nathaniel Garcia, Jason Marcano, Ataulla Guerra, Sean de Silva, Leston Paul and Darren Mitchell; and forwards Willis Plaza and Dwight Quintero.

Fenwick, who only returned as Central coach last month in a shock move by the club to shift Serbian Zoran Vranes into the role of technical director, said, “The 18 (players) that I am taking are a work in progress. Our players are lacking in fitness and there is a divide in their working as a team. I am not just about having two or three players standing out. We need a much more rounded team performance. It’s also about getting team spirit and performance up, so that we do well.”

Central, making their debut at the CFU Club Championship, must travel to Guyana in Group 1 and will face Suriname powerhouse Inter Moengotapoe on 17 April and host team Alpha United on 19 April at Providence Stadium. Alpha and Inter Moengotapoe will meet in the opening group match on 15 April.

Central qualified for the CFU Club Championship by finishing as runners-up in last season’s Digicel Pro League championship behind champions DIRECTV W Connection, who will host Group 2 of the 2015 CFU Club Championship in Trinidad at the Ato Boldon Stadium. Both Central and Connection – already caging the top two positions in the ongoing 2014-2015 DPL – have also qualified for the 2016 CFU Club Championship.

Connection, three-time CFU Club champions, will host Guyana Defence Force on 15 April, Antigua & Barbuda’s SAP FC on 17 April and Jamaica’s Waterhouse FC on 19 April.

Haiti meanwhile, will host Groups 3 and 4. (See full Group stage schedule and times below)

The semi-final and final rounds will be contested between May 22-24 to decide the Caribbean Club Champions and determine the three Caribbean berths at the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League.

Central will travel to Guyana on Tuesday and will be based at the Windjammer International Cuisine and Comfort Inn in Georgetown for the duration of the Group stage.

Fenwick, who has ample experience at the Caribbean and CONCACAF tournaments during his time as coach of San Juan Jabloteh, said he is very cautious of his opponents such as Alpha United who strengthen up for such tournaments as the CFU Club Championship.

But the Central FC coach said that arriving in Guyana on Tuesday prior to their opening match on Friday and being able to witness the opening match between host team Alpha United and Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe on Wednesday, allows him the opportunity to get a better understanding of his opponents.

“It (the schedule) worked out very well in that aspect where we get to actually see the opponents before we actually meet them,” ended Fenwick.

Following the Caribbean Club Championship Group stage, Fenwick and Central must quickly refocus on the Digicel Pro League championship, where the league leaders are hoping to stay ahead of defending champions and second-placed W Connection to win the title for the first time in only their three years of existence.

And with Central’s foreign nationals: Guyana national team goalkeeper Akel Clarke, Jamaican international Upston Edwards, Liberian midfielder Borfor Carr and Ghanaian forward Michael Yaw Darko left behind, managing director, Kevin Harrison, said it has balanced out well for the club with the focus also on the domestic league crown.

This yr is big. Gonna be very interesting to see how the T&T clubs perform at home & away from home in hostile territory against host countries that are desperate to make a little impact in Concacaf. Football can deliver some countries who are on the brink of failed state status. Right now Central FC and W Connection are the most appropriate, best equipped to take on a serious challenge to go far. This has North East Stars, Defense Force & Jabloteh, Civic and someday Sando extremely hungry and feeling the pressure to emulate and taste the potentially good spin off benefits of playing in Concacaf. Good luck fellahs. Play yuh heart out.

"Assistant Minister" FS could you ask Minister Sancho to do something to help fan awareness of the club championship games. This is warrr and the 12th man is important.

Group II of the Caribbean Football Union's Club Championship Tournament which is scheduled to begin this evening faced some challenges prior to its start.

Hosted by DIRECTV W Connection FC at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, the matches were scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm respectively, with the first match between SAP FC of Antigua and Waterhouse FC of Jamacia, and the second match between the local hosts and the Guyana Defence Force.

The Caribbean Football Union (CFU) has advised that the schedule 5:30 pm match between SAP FC of Antigua and Waterhouse FC of Jamaica has been cancelled as the Jamaican contingent has not yet arrived in Trinidad and Tobago. The second match will take place at 8:00pm.

In Group 4 action, Don Bosco (Haiti) defeated Lyford Cay (Bahamas) 10-0 tonight. The way W-Connection are going, we may see a repeat of that scoreline.

Sorry not a fully clean sheet though. Try to conquer the Caribbean fellahs, earn some money for the clubs
and then hopefullly advance further to test Conccaf. Central FC, over to you now. We looking to take champ & runner up spot in Concacaf
So let Shabazz know that if he wants to go invest in Guyana, go right ahead, is his lorse not T&T's.

There were travel packages posted on Facebook. I know of several people coming over. In addition, Bankers Insurance paid for the flights for a couple of our supporters as well as top sport photographer, Allan V Crane.

At yesterdays game, the Guyanese supporters were quite hostile towards Alpha until they scored. I imagine there will be around 3,000 at Sundays game and I imagine the atmosphere will be a bit intimidating for Central players. However, 3 Central supporters singing through the game should quieten down the home fans lol  I just hope we get out in one piece once we win!!

Title: Connection humiliate Guyana Defence Force

Jamaica's Waterhouse fail to fly while Connection humiliate Guyana D/Force in CONCACAF Champions League qualifying
ttproleague.com

Hashim Arcia scored a hat-trick and strike partner Shahdon Winchester a double, among two assists each, as TT Pro League powerhouse DIRECTV W Connection made easy of Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship debutants Guyana Defence Force 7-1 in a lopsided opening Group 2 match on Wednesday night.

The comfortable win placed Connection, a three-time (2001, 2001 & 2009) Caribbean champions, atop the Trinidad group, which was trimmed to three teams after Jamaica’s Waterhouse FC, who participated at last season's CONCACAF Champions League, failed to show for an earlier scheduled match against Antigua and Barbuda’s League champions SAP FC.

The Jamaica Red Stripe Premier League runners-up were supposed to be making their second consecutive appearance at the Caribbean Club Championship but ttproleague.com was informed by CONCACAF general coordinator Linval Johnson on Wednesday night that Waterhouse are officially out of the tournament and that Group 2 had been revised.

The revised Group 2 fixtures will see SAP FC take on Guyana Defence Force from 6 pm on Friday at the Ato Boldon Stadium before the W Connection and SAP FC complete the group on Sunday from 6 pm at the very same Couva venue.

Johnson said information he received from the CFU tournaments committee is that Waterhouse, who were scheduled to arrive in Trinidad since Sunday, kept delaying their travel before final efforts by the club to secure late flights to Trinidad were unsuccessful.

Johnson however, when quizzed further, said he was unaware of rumours, which claimed that Waterhouse’s delays and eventual failure to secure flights were due to players protesting over unpaid per diems, which were promised to them by the Jamaican club.

Earlier this week, Waterhouse captain and Jamaica national team goalkeeper Richard Mc Callum was quoted in the Jamaica Observer as saying: “This year, we are going in just as focused, but the level of [financial] support we had last year is missing this year. Nonetheless, our intention is to do just as good as we did last year, and hopefully we can take it much further.”

However, without Waterhouse, the show went on for seven-time Caribbean Club Championship finalists, W Connection, who are now one win away from winning the Group and securing a place in the semi-final round, with the ultimate ambition of securing one of three available berths at the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League.

“At least it was a good victory for us,” said W Connection head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier following his team’s 7-1 win over Guyana Defence Force.

Fevrier, who expressed total confidence in his team to top the group, added, “You could have seen we are definitely a team much better than they are. I even thought we could have gone for a lot more goals in the second half.

“But after five goals in the first half our players weren’t that motivated in the second half. To them they had already won the game in the first half. It’s 7-1 and it’s a good result for us and we look forward to the next game. Winning a game 7-1, even if everything wasn’t perfect tonight, it’s difficult to get angry at my players. But now it’s a matter of putting this game behind us and starting back at 0-0 against SAP FC in our next game.”

Connection, last season’s Digicel Pro League champions and the current 2014-2015 season's second placed team, starting line-up averaged players between ages of 18 to 25, with 26-year-olds, defensive midfielder Gerard Williams and forward Arcia, the eldest players.

Connection scored twice in a space of two minutes with 18-year-old Akeem Garcia hitting firmly past Guyana Defence Force goalie Derick Carter off an Arcia feed for a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

Two minutes later, 23-year-old Connection prodigy Shahdon Winchester cushioned the hosts 2-0 after seizing a poor back-pass by Defence Force captain Selwyn Isaacs and letting off a cool finish past a hapless Carter.

Winchester made it 3-0 in the 25th minute to complete his double against the Guyana soldiers. It was after a right-side move by Garcia and a squared pass inside the box by Arcia that Winchester controlled, then rounded Carter before hitting into an open net.

Coach Stuart Charles Fevrier’s side added two goals before the break and two more from Arcia in the second half before Guyana Defence Force pulled back a consolation item on the final of four minutes stoppage-time given by Barbadian referee Trevor Taylor.

Arcia snatched his first goal of the match in the 32nd minute with a well-timed volley at the back post off a Jerrel Britto cross for a 4-0 score.

The score-line was beyond Guyana Defence Force by the 40th minute when Britto, who was earlier denied three times by Carter and missed an open net in the second half, executed a half volley past the shot-stopper off a Garcia cross to make it 5-0.

And if for some reason there was the faintest of the hope of a comeback by the Guyana Defence Force following the half-time dressing room talk by coach Denzil Thompson, Arcia reminded the visitors of the reality by netting his second goal of the night just seconds after the restart as Connection led 6-0.

The silky moving lanky figure of the W Connection forward made no mistake from the six-yard box, turning a Winchester cross into the back of the net.

Arcia later completed his hat-trick to put Connection 7-0 ahead in the 82nd minute with a low solid finish past Carter, who had made second half saves to deny substitutes Neil Benjamin Jr. and Colombian Jhon Stiven Lopez. But Carter was unable to deny Arcia who hit from the top of the six-yard area off a perfectly placed right side feed by Benjamin.

Arcia missed out on a fourth with four minutes of regulation time left when he guided substitute Jomal Williams' cross wide at the back post.

Connection were later unable to keep a clean sheet and the score-line ended 7-1 after Delroy Fraser scored in the 94th minute for the Guyana Defence Force, even winning a broad smile on the face of forward Eusi Phillips, who saw his much earlier second half attempt cleared off the goal line by the head of Gerard Williams.

Fraser powered his way past Connection’s 20-year-old left back Triston Hodge and unleashed a right-footer from the top of the box, with the ball clipping the underside of the crossbar before sinking into the back goalkeeper Julani Archibald’s net.

And to probably ease the disappointment of the Guyana Defence Force, their loss wasn’t the most embarrassing of the 2015 CFU Club Championship opening day.

Don Bosco FC, hosts of Group 4 in Haiti, topped Bahamian outfit Lyford Cay FC 10-0 at the Stade Sylvio Cator following a 2-2 between Helenites Sporting Club of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Unite Sainte Rose of Guadeloupe.

In Guyana, Group 1 hosts Alpha United defeated Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe 3-0 at the Providence Stadium, while in Group 3, hosted in Haiti, home side America FC defeated Suriname’s SV Excelsior 4-2 at the Complexe Sportif Des Cays after Jamaica Red Stripe Premier League champions edged Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien 1-0.

The CFU Club Championship will resume on Friday and includes current Digicel Pro League leaders Central FC against Suriname powerhouse Inter Moengotapoe in Group 1 from 4 pm at Providence Stadium in Guyana. (See revised fixtures and results below)

Central F.C. Ready For CFU Debut

TT Pro League leaders Central F.C. are eagerly awaiting its debut match in the Caribbean Club Championship against Inter Moengotapoe on Friday 17th April.

The Sharks will then face host team Alpha United on Sunday 19th April, who are coming off of a 3-0 win over Inter Moengotapoe from Suriname in the first group game.

After watching the opening fixture in the group, Central F.C. Head Coach Terry Fenwick stated, "The Surinamese team (Inter Moengotapoe) has lost their first game so they are in a win or die scenario when facing us. I think we just need to fight the fight, play and our quality will come through. We have the benefit of seeing both of the teams that we have to play against so that puts us in a good position."

He added,"I expect to do well against both sides but it won't be easy."

A win against Inter Moengotapoe would mean that Sunday's game against Alpha United would be similar to a final, with the winner advancing to the semi-final round. Providence Stadium on Sunday is expected to boast a hostile atmosphere with thousands of local fans in attendance.

The final round will be played between 20th and 24th May at a venue to be decided, with the winners from each of the four groups competing for three CONCACAF Champions League places.

Live match updates of both of Central F.C.’s games in Guyana will be available on the Central F.C. facebook pages from 4pm on the 17th & 19th April.

Central F.C. squad for Guyana: Jan-Michael Williams, Elton John, Kevon Villaroel, Akeem Benjamin, Leston Paul, Jason Marcano, Sean de Silva, Marvin Oliver, Darren Mitchell, Jamal Jack, Kaydion Gabriel, Keion Goodridge, Javon Sample, Marcelle Francois, Nathaniel Garcia, Willis Plaza, Ataulla Guerra and Dwight Quintero.

Willis Plaza brace leads Central FC past Inter Moengotapoe
By Franklin Wilson (Kaieteur News)

A second half double from Willis Plaza, led Trinidad and Tobago’s top Pro League side Central ‘The Shark’ Football Club to a 2-0 win over Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe when Group 1 action in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship continued last evening at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

It was Central’s debut win in this competition and sets up an intriguing final game with Guyana’s top side Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United who also whipped Inter Moengotapoe 3-0 on Wednesday evening.

The loss spelt the end of the Surinamese’s club sojourn in their year’s CFU championship; two defeats while giving up 5 goals.

They {Inter Moengotapoe} were in a must win situation after losing to Alpha but found the going tough against the potent Central FC. Inter MT held strong for the first 45 minutes despite Central coming close to breaking the deadlock on a few occasions.

The first half was also played in overcast conditions but the entire second was played in a steady downpour that saw Central FC drilling their way to victory.

The opening goal came in the 54th minute from an enterprising run down the right side by the solid looking Nathaniel Garcia whose pin point throw into the box found the ever lurking Willis Plaza who slapped the ball past custodian Obrendo Huiswoud.

The ensuing celebration of the goal clearly proved that it was great relief for the TT side; the on field players all gathered with the reserves and Technical staff to rejoice.

Not satisfied with the 1-0 score, Central FC kept piling on the pressure as the Surinamese looked more vulnerable as the game matured. The insurance goal came four minutes after the first and again it was Plaza who fired past the hapless goalkeeper to seal the game.

Central were now dominating play and creating chances but poor work in the attacking third spilled at least four chances that would have really annihilated the Surinamese.

But while they won, Central FC Head Coach Terry Fenwick commenting after the game said he and his staff were disappointed.

“We didn’t move the ball quick enough, we were trying to play one touch football and we kept giving the ball away instead of keeping possession and opening chances up. But I thought our general work and application was good and we always felt in the long run they would get tired and we’ll get chances which we did.”

Fenwick pointed out that they threw away numerous chances towards the end of the game which means they must win against Alpha tomorrow.

“Alpha is a very good football team; they’ve got a number of well recognized players from around the region and they would be a different kettle of fish to what we played tonight. We’re expecting a tough game, they’ll be organized and I think it will be a very good game.”

Coach Fenwick also commented on what the inaugural win means for Central FC: “We’re a very new club; this is our third season which hopefully we do our business back home we win the championship. CFU is a great opportunity for our players to gain experience and if we work to win the next game and go on to the finals then I think we could go all the way and then who knows.”

Tomorrow’s game against Alpha United will kick off at 16:00hrs.

Connection 4-0 up already lol.

Massive game in May... Connection vs Central FC.

Soccerama , FS..will the final round be in T&T as we have 2 of the 4 teams ? makes sense to host it here but I know it's CFU we dealing with lol

Logical but as you say you never know!!!

The Pro League and TTFA should apply for it... anything else makes zero sense.

From my information W Connection was responsible for hosting this leg, making all arrangements etc for all the teams, so I assume the same will entail for the semis so maybe if Connection & Central are willing to work together & have the backing/assistance of the Pro League & TTFA it probably can happen, but it would definitely make sense to host the semis here. However FS is in a Managerial position at Central so he is better qualified to speak on this. I am just a Connection fan ....lol.

I'm just a Central fan today!! Voice gone. Our travelling supporters sung all the way through despite abuse from Alpha supporters. Real proud of the lads achievements. But what a great advert for T&T football with at least one team guaranteed to go through to CONCACAF.

BIG UP CENTRAL & CONNECTION  :applause: :applause:

Central, Connection marched into CFU semis.
By Sean Taylor (Express).

A brace from Ataullah Guerra sandwiched Sean De Silva’s excellent right-footed finish as Central FC marched into the semis of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship qualifiers after they beat Aplha 3-1.

The Group One match was played yesterday at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana. The Couva-based club needed nothing less than a win against the hosts to advance to the competition’s semi-finals.

Guerra opened the scoring early on with a cannon from his left foot into the bottom corner in the 16th minute. Two minutes later, former U-17 and U-20 World Cup midfielder, De Silva doubled the advantage and there seemed no way back for the Guyanese team.

The hosts pulled halved the deficit on the stroke of half-time with a brilliant free kick. Alpha were in the ascendency for much of the second half as they pushed for the equaliser, but Central killed off the contest when Guerra sent the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot in the 85th minute.

The win steered Central FC into the semi-finals, and Guerra was named Man of the Match. W Connection also marched into the semis with a whopping 7-2 victory over SAP FC at the Ato Boldon Stadium. Both T&T teams will meet on May 22 at the same venue.

Caribbean Club Championship Results

Alpha United 1 (Konata Manning 43), Central FC 3 (Ataullah Guerra 15, 85-Pen, Sean De Silva 16).

W Connection 7 (Jomal Williams 5, Jerrel Britto 9, 81, Hashim Arcia 20, 43, 45, Shahdon Winchester 26), SAP FC 2 (Tevaughn Harriette 59, Steven Roberts 77).

Central FC trounce Alpha 3-1 to qualify for CFU Club Championship semis
By Franklin Wilson (Kaieteur News)

Trinidad and Tobago’s Central FC aka the ‘Sharks’ continue to enjoy a dream debut season in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship by trouncing Guyana’s top side Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United 3-1 win Group 1 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, last evening.

A double from Atualla Guerra including a penalty and another from Sean De Silva secured the win for Central.

Needing to win outright, the young T&T Pro League side dominated the host team in every department to earn a place in the semi finals set for next month with a perfect record of two wins in as many matches, scoring five goals while conceding one.

From the outset, the visiting team looked a solid unit, moving the ball around whilst imposing their will on the home team. The Terry Fenwick coached T&T side which also displayed superior fitness took the game away from Alpha very early in the piece.

Guerra netted the first of his brace in the 16th minute, a powerful left foot shot that eluded goalkeeper Ronson Williams after excellent work in midfield by Guerra, Captain Marvin Oliver and Dwight Quintero.

Alpha had hardly settled after falling behind when the Sharks struck again. It was Guerra again who sent Sean De Silva through in the 17th minute and he made no mistake with his shot from inside the box.

The experienced Oliver was a tower of strength in midfield for Central as they continued to dominate and dictate proceedings. Alpha showed in short patches that they were capable of being a more potent unit but fitness was a challenge and they were giving the ball away too easily.

Close to the half way mark however, Alpha won a free kick which was put away into the back of the nets by Konata Manning on the stroke of half time, custodian Jan-Michael Williams was well beaten to his left.

But even before the goal, the introduction of Sheldon Holder for Calvin Shepherd who was the only change to the starting team for Alpha that defeated Inter Moengotapoe (3-0) brought life to the Alpha side seven minutes before the goal.

Central had made five changes to their team that took care of business against Inter, 2-0. The second half saw Central maintaining their stranglehold on the game even as Alpha sought the neutralizing goal.

Central’s superior level of fitness kept them ahead of the game always along with the strategic changes Coach Fenwick made. Quintero made way for first game hero Willis Plaza in the 64th minute; De Silva was replaced by Darren Mitchell in the 75th minute.

Ten minutes later, Mitchell was brought down in the box and Central were awarded the penalty that Guerra buried past Williams whom he sent the wrong way to seal the game and his side’s berth in the final round where they will face the winner of Group 2 in one of two semi finals on May 22.

Alpha inserted Manasseh Primo for Daniel Wilson in the 81st minute and four minutes later, Quincy Madramootoo replaced Manning. Nathaniel Garcia was inserted in the 90+1 minute for Guerra who was later named man-of-the-match.

A delighted Fenwick speaking after the game said that it was a dominant performance by his men, admitting that he knew Alpha would have been strong but his charges were a different class on the night.

“We moved the ball fast and two early goals in the game really killed it for us. We were very disappointed to concede just before half time but in second half we didn’t give any chances up and I thought it was a good, professional, solid performance.”

Fenwick’s opposite number, Wayne Dover said that they were dominated by a fitter T&T unit especially in midfield.

The long standing Alpha tactician stated that they will have to do some serious introspection now noting that at this level players have to have a high level of fitness in order to be competitive.

“If we can’t produce players at this level it makes no sense we enter these tournaments.”

Arcia and Guerra thrill as W Connection and Central FC set up CFU Club Championship semis meeting
ttproleague.com

T&T Pro League clubs Central FC and W Connection, both chasing berths at the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League, will renew their rivalry on May 22 in the semi-final round of the 2015 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship after topping Groups 1 and 2 respectively.

Central, one of this season's Club Championship debuting teams with a huge appetite for CCL competition, defeated Alpha United 3-1 at Providence Stadium in Guyana today (Sunday) to leapfrog the home side to top Group 1 of the Club Championship to qualify for the semi-final round, where the “Couva Sharks” later learned that they will meet bitter Trinidadian rivals W Connection.

Trinidad and Tobago international Ataulla Guerra scored twice and set up another, scored by midfield partner Sean de Silva, against the Guyana league champions, who got their lone item from 29-year-old former Caledonia AIA forward Konata Mannings.

Guerra fired Central ahead in the 15th minute before setting up De Silva two minutes later to give the “Couva Sharks” an early 2-0 cushion.

Mannings then reduced the deficit 1-2 three minutes before the break with a curling 25-yard free-kick past goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams but an 85th minute converted penalty by Guerra, beating Alpha goalkeeper Ronson Williams, following a foul on Darren Mitchell, put the match out of the Guyana team’s reach 3-1.

The win also kept Central FC head coach Terry Fenwick perfect after three matches in all competitions since being reinstalled last month for the position he took over from Serbian Zoran Vranes, who was shifted into the role of technical director of youth and women's football.

While Connection – seasoned Club Championship and CONCACAF Champions League campaigners – preserved their position at the top of Group 2 in Trinidad by defeating Antigua and Barbuda outfit SAP FC 7-2, just shy of duplicating a 7-1 score-line they achieved against Guyana Defence Force last Wednesday.

Due to unlawful player registrations, SAP FC’s Antigua and Barbuda internationals and star attackers Peter Byers, 30, and Blake Thompson, 29, were forced to spectate from the stands, just as they did during their team’s opening match against Guyana Defence Force which finished 2-2 draw,.

But SAP’s greater problems weren’t in offence. SAP defenders were clearly unable to withstand the prowess of Connection's attacking diamond which headed into the dressing room with a 6-0 lead at the break, with all four attacking players scoring within the first 26 minutes.

Hashim Arcia scored three times in the first half against the Antiguans to reach his second hat-trick, with a tally of six goals during the Group stage in just two matches.

The 26-year-old Arcia, scored his first on the 20th minute by hitting low past goalkeeper Molvin James after running into the box, by which time Connection were leading 3-0.

Jomal Williams had opened the scoring in the 5th minute and in the 9th minute double goalscorer Jerrel Britto got to his first, seconds after an Alvin Jones free-kick cannoned off the frame.

Connection forward Shahdon Winchester executed probably the goal of the tournament when he joined in the fun with an acrobatic volley off a well-worked Triston Hodge left side cross to beat a hapless James for a 4-0 lead in the 26th minute.

Arcia continued his rich scoring form of the tournament by netting two more goals in a space of three minutes to give the Stuart Charles Fevrier-coached Connection an unassailable 6-0 lead.

The lanky Connection forward had a simple task of tapping into an open net off Britto’s short feed while goalkeeper James was left stranded at the corner of his six-yard box, then completed his hat-trick with a low finish past the SAP ‘keeper in the 45th minute off another excellent Hodge left side cross.

SAP later pulled back two goals in a space of 20 minutes in the second half through strikes from Tevaughn Harriette and substitute Steven Rogers in the 58th and 78th minutes respectively and had a number of exciting saves from goalkeeper James but were still far from a comeback.

Connection, who were unlucky not to add another goal in the 68 minute when Williams (J) 20-yard free-kick crashed off the crossbar, finally had the ball in the back of the net again in the 82nd minute for the 7-2 score when Britto completed his double with an easy tap in following some neat passing between Williams (J) and substitute Neil Benjamin Jr.

Central FC and W Connection, first and second on the Digicel Pro League 2014-2015 standings respectively, will return to domestic action this week when they refocus on the league crown, while the semi-final stage of the Caribbean Club Championship, which includes the winners of Group 3 and 4, remains a month away.

Groups 3 and 4 were simultaneously contested in Haiti. (See full schedule, results and standings below)

The four group winners will advance to the next stage, which includes the semi-final and final rounds, to be contested during May 22-24 (at venues to be decided) and will determine the Caribbean champions and the three Caribbean berths at the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League.

F.S,

I see in Lasana report that the final round will be in T&T at the Ato ,  can you confirm this?

Lastly, as that ground in an absolute mess would it not be logical of the Pro League to put all games in Manny, Larry, and HCS for AT LEAST 2 weeks before the final round to improve the playing surface and give it some much needed maintenance and rest

Central FC and W Connection confident of CONCACAF Champions League berths
ttproleague.com.

Despite having to face each other in the semi-final round of the 2015 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship next month, current Digicel Pro League leaders Central FC and second-placed defending champions W Connection are both confident of securing berths at the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League.

The semi-final and final stages of the Caribbean Club Championship will be contested on May 22 and 24 respectively, with Trinidad being the likely host nation having two Trinidadian clubs, Central and W Connection, qualifying for semi-final one. While semi-final two includes Jamaica’s Montego Bay United and Haiti’s Don Bosco FC in semi-final two.

Both semi-final winners will automatically qualify for the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League, which begins in August, while the third-place winners will secure the third and final Caribbean berth. The semi-final winners will also lock horns on May 24 to decide the Caribbean champions.

“It’s a big incentive with three spots available for the CONCACAF Champions League,” said Central FC head coach Terry Fenwick, who has made multiple trips to the CONCACAF Champions League with former club San Juan Jabloteh.

The former England and Tottenham defender continued, “We (Central FC) know a lot about (W) Connection and we are very confident in our own abilities and strengths. We’ve got nothing to fear in our first Caribbean tournament and it’s about attacking the game and getting the best result possible.”

Central (2-0-0, 6 points), debuting at the Caribbean Club Championship, topped Group 1, hosted in Guyana at Providence Stadium between April 15-19, by defeating Suriname powerhouse Inter Moengotapoe (0-0-2, 0 points) 2-0 and home team Alpha United (1-0-1, 3 points) 3-1.

While Connection topped Group 2, hosted simultaneously in Trinidad at the Ato Boldon Stadium, by flattening Guyana Defence Force 7-1 and Antigua and Barbuda’s SAP FC 7-2.

“Naturally it was always our objective [to win the group] and we are very pleased with that,” said longstanding W Connection head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier, who led the “Savonetta Boys” to the Caribbean Club Championship crown in 2001, 2002 and 2009 and multiple qualifications into the CONCACAF tournament.

Fevrier added, “The goal is to reach the CONCACAF Champions League. Reaching the semi-final stage (of the Caribbean Club Championship) is a step in the right direction but we wont be satisfied till we qualify for the Champions League.”

Commenting on his 22 May semi-final clash with Couva-rivals Central FC, Fevrier said, “It’s normal for me to accept whichever team we have to beat, because we want to be the champions of the Caribbean. And to be the champions of the Caribbean you must play some of the top teams from anywhere in the region, so [meeting] Central is not a problem.”

Tournament debutants, Montego Bay United (3-0-0, 9 points) topped Group 3, hosted in Haiti at the Complexe Sportif Des Cays. The Jamaica Red Stripe League champions defeated Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien 1-0, Haitian outfit America FC 4-1, and Suriname’s SV Excelsior 3-0.

While Haiti’s second stage League winners, Don Bosco FC (3-0-0, 9 points), hosts of Group 4 at the Stade Sylvio Cator, topped the group after wins against Lyford Cay of Bahamas 10-0, U.S. Virgin Islands’ Helenites Sporting Club 5-1, and Guadeloupe’s Unite Sainte Rose 2-1.

With the Caribbean Club Championship semi-final and final a month away, Central FC and W Connection will shift their focus back on the high priority Digicel Pro League championship.

Central, six points clear at the top of the standings with 49 points and two matches remaining, must first face Point Fortin Civic from 8 pm on Friday 24 April at the Hasely Crawford Stadium following a 6 pm kickoff between North East Stars and St. Ann’s Rangers in Round Three Match Day Eight.

The “Couva Sharks”, winners of this season’s First Citizens Cup and Rawle Fletcher (DPL Round One) and Akeem Adams (DPL Round Two) under previous coach Zoran Vranes, who was replaced by Fenwick last month, will then wrap up their 2014-2015 championship campaign against North East Stars on Tuesday 28 April from 8 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium in a rescheduled Round Three Match Day Seven fixture.

While Connection, with 43 points and three matches remaining, must do the necessary to keep alive their chances of hurdling Central to retain the title.

Connection will host Caledonia AIA from 4 pm on Friday 24 April, followed by Tuesday’s rescheduled match against Police FC from 6 pm, before wrapping up their campaign against San Juan Jabloteh in Round Three Match Day Nine.

Jabloteh will be in action on Sunday 26 April against Defence Force from 4 pm at the Larry Gomes Stadium in their Round Three Match Day Eight fixture.

Title: Waterhouse blame last-minute flight plans for CFU no-show

Waterhouse blame last-minute flight plans for CFU no-show
Jamaica Observer

LAST season's Caribbean club champions Waterhouse FC have issued a statement, blaming last-minute flight plans for their no-show at the 2015 edition of the tournament, which was held in Trinidad & Tobago from April 15 to 19.

The Jamaican club said sponsorship to cover their expense at the tournament was delayed, which meant that at late notice, administrators were left scrambling to confirm flight seats for players and staff travelling to the twin-island republic.

"The Waterhouse Football Club regrets not participating in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) competition ...the [club's] executive apologises unreservedly to our players, supporters, the Waterhouse community and the wider football fraternity," a section of the statement said.

"Competitions of this nature require significant funding for which, on this occasion, the club looked outside its regular sponsors for support. However, commitments that were made materialised very close to the tournament date, by which time the club had difficulties securing sufficient seats for the squad and technical team due to flights being full, with persons returning home from Sunday's staging of Carnival.

"We were then faced with having the team travel through Fort Lauderdale, however, several members do not hold a United States visa. Extraordinary efforts were then made to arrange a charter flight, but only 19 persons could travel on the charter, which would not have arrived in Trinidad until 8:00 pm [last] Wednesday, with the first match being scheduled for 4:30 pm [the same day].

"We communicated with the director of the competition and informed of our misfortunes in not making it to Trinidad on time for the first scheduled match. We regret not being able to defend our title and, more so, the level of embarrassment on the players, management, executive, the community and all our supporters due to our circumstances," it further said.

Waterhouse stressed that the players were committed to defending their title.

"As the defending champions, our players took pride in their past achievements and looked forward to their title defence with excitement and optimism," the release stated.

According to the statement, the club is focused on recovering from the debacle.

"We know that the wounds are still fresh, but we are committed to the healing process and the team is committed to moving forward and putting in place policies to prevent future such occurrences. We now direct our focus to the remainder of the [Red Stripe] Premier League season with high hopes of securing a position in the CFU competition."

Waterhouse are second in the Premier League and have already qualified for the semi-finals. The two finalists will gain places to next season's CFU Club Championship.

Simon: SAP beaten by better team
Antigua Observer

Head coach of the SAP football team, Janiel Simon, believes his squad was simply beaten by a better-prepared and more professional outfit when they were hammered 7-2 by Trinidad’s W Connection in the CFU Club Championships on Sunday.

SAP contested a three-team in Group 2 during the championships held at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad and picked up just one point following a 2-2 draw with Guyana’s Defense Force.

“We are still far off when it comes to the professional teams. It is different when you are an amateur and playing against professionals. They are well equipped, they are well prepared because their season is more compact, more challenging than our season. I just think that we have to prepare early; that’s out main issue,” he said.

The former national goalkeeper, however, drew comfort from the fact that some of the team’s young players were given an opportunity to showcase their talents at a much higher level.

“They played more minutes than we predicted, so I think that they stepped up and, to me, they played a lot better than the older guys. They went out and showed that they can compete at a high level. I would say that the experience for them was very good and I have to give big thanks to Molvin James because he actually kept a very good tournament,” he said.

Speaking on the issue where two of the team’s key players — striker Peter Byers and defender Blake Thompson — were not allowed to take the field for the entire tournament because of a registration dispute, Simon said SAP is still awaiting a written explanation.

“So far, we still don’t get full results with what’s the issue. I know going forward with Peter we thought he was registered under SAP and he took it up on his own along with Blake to go down to Santo Domingo and play for a professional team and I think that’s where the issue lies. They played the Sunday night before coming over into Trinidad so that made the situation even more difficult,” he said.

“We did some investigations before we went down there and all the results showed they would have been able to play,” the coach added.

SAP finished number two in the group with one point, five points adrift leaders W Connection unbeaten on six points. Guyana is at the bottom of the standings with one point after two showings as well.

A pair of sides from Trinidad & Tobago, Central FC (Group 1) and DirecTV W Connection (Group 2), plus Jamaica’s Montego Bay (Group 3) and Haiti’s Don Bosco FC (Group 4) advanced after topping the table of the their respective groups.

The quartet of clubs will meet at a single location on May 22 to contest the semifinals. The eventual finalists and the winner of the third place match will qualify for the 2015/16 CONCACAF Champions League.

T&T Guardian Reports.

Newly crowned Digicel T&T Pro League champions, Central FC and Couva neighbours, DirecTV W Connection have been drawn apart for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship semifinals carded for the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, May 22.

Previously it was stated that both T&T clubs would meet in one semifinal while Haiti’s Don Bosco and Jamaica’s Montego Bay Sports would face off in the other for a place in the final from 6 pm on May 24.

However, in a confirmed release on the CFU Web site it was stated that Central FC will clash with Don Bosco in the opening semifinal from 6pm followed by W Connection, CFU  winners in 2001, 2001 and 2009 and four-time finalists against Montego Bay with the quartet cashing the three CFU representatives to the 2015/2016 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League

The three-year-old Central FC club, making its debut in the 14-team tournament advanced to the semifinals after it won Group One played at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence with wins over Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe (2-0) and host club, Alpha United (3-1) while W Connection was more emphatic in reaching the last-four as it crushed Guyana Defence Force 7-1 and followed up with a 7-2 bashing of Antigua and Barbuda’s SAP FC in Group Two at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

Jamaica’s Waterhouse FC was expected to be the fourth club in Group Two, but withdrew at the last minute due to financial issues.

Montego Bay, was also impressive in Group Three beating Club Sportif Moulien of Guadeloupe, 1-0; Haiti’s America FC, 2-1; and Suriname’s SV Excelsior, 3-0.

And in Group Four, Don Bosco hammered Bahamas’ Lyford Cay FC 10-0 and followed with a 5-1 beating of Virgin Islands’ Helenites Sporting Club and Unite Sainte Rose, 1-0.

The semifinal winners  will automatically qualify for the 2015/2016 Concacaf Champions League, which begins in August, while the third-place winners will secure the third and final Caribbean berth.

Central and W Connection confident of qualify for CCL and Caribbean final.
ttproleague.com.

Pro League rivals Central FC and W Connection are both confident of qualifying for the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) and Sunday’s final of the 2015 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship despite having little knowledge of their semifinal opponents on Friday.

Central must face Haiti’s Don Bosco FC from 6 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Friday 22 May in semifinal before three-time Caribbean Club champions W Connection take on Jamaica’s Montego Bay United in semifinal two from 8 pm.

All four teams topped their respective groups in the Group stage last month to reach the final stage of the Caribbean Club Championship, which will determine the Caribbean champions and the three regional berths at the 2015-2016 CCL.

Both semifinal winners will automatically qualify for next season’s CCL, beginning in August, and contest the final of the Caribbean Club Championship from 6 pm on Sunday at the same Ato Boldon Stadium. The semifinal round losers with meet in the third place match from 4 pm, prior to the final, to determine the third and final Caribbean CCL berth.

“It’s obvious we want to get to the CONCACAF Champions League stage,” said Central FC head coach Terry Fenwick. “That’s where the money is and the exposure for the players. It is paramount to us at the club.”

Despite the dark cloud hanging above the club due to unsettled bonus quarrels over competition earnings and injury concerns, Fenwick holds confidence in his squad which already boasts this season’s 2014-2015 Digicel Pro League (DPL), the First Citizens Cup, and the Rawle Fletcher, Akeem Adams and Kevon Carter trophies for winning each round of the league, and qualified for the 2016 Caribbean Club Championship along with W Connection.

The three-year-old Central have also reached the final of the domestic season-ending Digicel Pro Bowl on 29 May against 2008 winners Caledonia AIA after edging Police FC 1-0 in the semifinal round last Friday and heads into the Caribbean Club Championship on a nine-match unbeaten wave in all competitions.

“I’ve always had pride in my team doing solid jobs,” Fenwick said. “We have already had a great season and into another final (Pro Bowl), and this Caribbean Cup will be a wonderful achievement. We want to qualify, first and foremost, to the CONCACAF Champions League and we want to win the Caribbean Cup outright. I have every bit of confidence in my players.

“We’ve got little information on them (Don Bosco) but we are going to prepare well enough for them. While there is always an element of luck in everything, we will work hard to make sure everything is well prepared.”

Central, debuting at this season’s Caribbean Club Championship, topped Group 1 in Guyana with wins over Suriname powerhouse Inter Meongotapoe (2-0) and Guyana giants Alpha United (3-1), while Don Bosco had wins over Bahamian outfit Lyford Cay (10-0), US Virvin Island’s Helenites Sporting Club (5-1) and Guadeloupe’s Unite Sainte Rose (2-1) to top Group 4 in Haiti.

While W Connection, this season DPL runners-up, defeated Guyana Defence Force (7-1) and Antigua’s SAP FC (7-2) to comfortably top Group 2 in Trinidad, while Montego Bay United topped Group 3 in Haiti with wins over Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien (1-0), Haiti’s America FC (4-1) and Suriname’s SV Excelsior 3-0.

“We are confident that we can be Caribbean champions once again,” said W Connection head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier, who led the “Savonetta Boys” on the three occasions they have won the Caribbean title.

Connection, winners of this season’s Digicel Charity Shield, finished the domestic 2014-2015 season without a major title and are coming off last Friday’s 5-4 penalty loss in the semifinal round of the Pro Bowl to Caledonia AIA following an admirable 3-3 regulation time comeback.

But Fevrier stands confident that his players can rise to the occasion in the semifinal round of the Caribbean Club Championship against Montego Bay United on Friday to progress to the final and win the regional crown.

“I believe the incentive of playing internationally (CCL) will provide the motivation our players need to win this competition. We have always been consistent at the local level but want to play at the international level consistently as well.

“
I don’t have much knowledge about them (Montego Bay United) but Jamaica teams are normally good teams because their country is one of the top footballing countries in the region. We have always done well against Jamaica teams but we will go into the game respecting our opponent (however) more focused on our game

plan. This final week it’s about preparing in detail in every aspect of our game.”

Montego Bay United head coach Dr. Dean Weatherly, a dentist by profession, is also confident his players will step up and deliver.

“We will go in blind, as in we don’t know what to expect (in the Caribbean final round) and we will need some time to make whatever adjustments will be necessary.

“Those three (Group) games in Haiti would have prepared us for this kind of football. The players know what is expected and we are confident they will step up and deliver.”

The reigning (Jamaica) Red Stripe Premier League champions are against Arnett Gardens in the league final and according to concacaf.com, club president Orville Powell stated: “We not only want to repeat as Jamaican champions, but we want to be Caribbean champions as well.”

Jamaicans pumped for W Connection clash
Jamaica Gleaner.

Fresh off their 5-1 second-leg (8-2 on aggregate) mauling of Waterhouse in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) semi-final on Sunday, Montego Bay United left the island high on confidence for Florida, en route to Trinidad and Tobago, where they will contest the CFU Club Championship semi-final.

Coach Dr Dean Weatherley said the win over Waterhouse was a great boost. But he insists it'll count for very little, as this is a totally new challenge in unchartered waters.

"It's (win over Waterhouse) a good motivation. We just have to make them (players) understand that that (game) is gone and is now history. We have to look ahead, we have to keep focused and don't be distracted by past achievements. What is in the past is in the past, and you have to look ahead to move to the next level, Weatherley reaffirmed.

The defending Premier League champions, who are playing in this tournament for the very first time, will face W-Connection of Trinidad in the feature semi-final at the Ato Boldon Stadium at 8 p.m. on Friday, while Don Bosco of Haiti will take on Central, from Trinidad and Tobago, in the first semi-final at 6 pm.

Weatherley said his only real concern is the reception they will get from the host country and supporters.

"Our chances are as good as anybody else. If we are playing the way we are now and are consistent in what we are doing, we should be successful. We are at a level that we are very competitive right across the board, whether it's in or outside of Jamaica," he said.

"We just hope the players feel good and comfortable, because when you go to these places, they can treat you very good or they can treat you as the worst. So we want to keep the focus and make sure we are not distracted in any way," he concluded.

This iz warrr people!! Stop the apathy and complacency. What wrong wit' allyuh man?
Proleague President, TTFA President, MOS, Andre the fearless one, Fazeer, Roger Sant all should be on TV whipping up the crowd to come out. If that's not happening then I jess don't understand the lack of interest in the crucial 12th man. Jamaica would definitely do it so why not T&T? Lord help these twin islands.
Good luck Warriors.

MoBay Utd confident of CFU win despite not training
By Livingston Scott (Jamaica Star)

Hours after their arrival in Trinidad and Tobago for their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship semi-final against the host's W-Connection at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Montego Bay United were unable to find a training field.

Their chairman, Orville Powell, was disappointed about the issues, ahead of the team's game this evening at 6:00.

Powell said the field made available had no lighting and no alternative venue could be found.

Despite his disappointment at losing the day, Powell remains confident of their chances to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.

"That is our main focus (qualifying) and that's what we are working towards. Outside of a little injury here and there, we are confident going into the first game (semi), and we really want to get that first game. If we win that first game (semi-final) we would have achieved our goal and we can move on to being champions of the Caribbean."

Powell said the team is on the verge of creating history and they are all ready for the challenge. He also wants the club to be proud representative for the country in their first international outing.

"This is just great history and memories for our club.We have achieved so much already and everything is considered a plus. We are prepared and the boys are ready mentally and physically, and the way the team is performing, we feel good," he said.

"We don't want to be too confident, we are just going there to fight and never say die. We want to represent the people of Mobay and by extension Jamaica, because the encouragement we are seeing of late is great," he said.

Actually I saw kind of different. Connection should have had 2 goals already. While they having more of the the ball, MoBay, quite correctly soaking up the pressure and counter attack when they have the opening. No different from EPL. Britto and Winchester need to score the damn goals.

That would nice. But these two clubs probably have more access to financial resources than TTFA. TTFA needs to finds money for the 8 national teams that they supervise, not the the 2 "rich" clubs ;D from the pro league.

But putting shit talk aside, it is nice to see 2 Trini teams battle for the CFU championship. The next level of competition will be tougher for them. I wished this tournament was a true home and away contest. Our teams lack regular stiff competition in the local league.

just watched the jamaican team qualify 1-0. somehow i like this team to go far, they are tenacious and seem to have a plan unlike the other teams. would be interesting to see how they match up with the bigger teams in concacaf.

in case you guys were wondering how i saw the game, i used the same feed from friday.

nice sloppy game yet the best team won. shadon winchester needs to work much harder at his game and be more of a presence if he wants to ever play outside of trinidad. i also hated the uniforms they were way too tight and looked like pumpum shorts.

This is misinformation, the top 3 Caribbean Clubs qualify for the Concacaf Champions League, the winner of the Concacaf Champions League will represent CONCACAF at the World Club Tournament.

Central edge 9-man W Connection to Caribbean crown.
ttproleague.com.

Central FC are the new kings of the Caribbean after edging nine-man W Connection 2-1 in the final of the 2015 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship on Sunday night at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

A goal each from midfielder Jean-Luc Rochford, in a rare start, and makeshift forward Jamal Jack, separated by the break, had Central ahead 2-0 before second half Connection substitute Neil Benjamin Jr. pulled back a goal on the 90th minute.

But at the final blow of Guyana referee Sherwin Moore’s whistle, Central supporters were singing louder, their alphabet ending “W Connection can’t beat we” chant.

In just their third season and first time at the regional tournament, Central are champions on the international stage and it wasn’t by surprise that the Terry Fenwick coached “Couva Sharks” defeated their bitter rivals W Connection to the crown on Sunday.

This season Central have won the 2014-2015 Digicel Pro League, the First Citizens Cup, and the Rawle Fletcher, Akeem Adams and Kevon Carter trophies for winning each of the three rounds in the league, and are also in the final of the Digicel Pro Bowl on Friday 29 May against Caledonia AIA.

While Connection, winners of this season’s Digicel Charity Shield and runners-up behind Central in the league, have ended the season without a major trophy.

Rochford, in his first start under Fenwick, who returned as Central FC two months ago, netted past Julani Archibald from close up in the 27th minute for a 1-0 lead after the Connection goalkeeper spilled on Jason Marcano’s attempt from the top of the box.

Rochford was later replaced on the hour mark by Ataullah Guerra, who was left out of the starting line-up by Fenwick, who did a lot of mixing and matching, including using left-back Keion Goodridge at midfield.

In the 68th minute Jack, a natural defender by trade but utilised as centre forward in the absence of injured Dwight Quintero and red card suspended Willis Plaza, doubled Central’s advantage 2-0.

Latching onto a Marcano pass into the box, Jack, who was later denied a second in the 85th minute, chipped the ball over an advancing Archibald to find the back of the Connection net, by which time the “Savonetta Boys” were already down to nine men.

Connection, winners of the Caribbean crown in 2006 and 2009, and joint winners in 2001, 2002 and 2013 which all had no final round, had lost defender Maurice Ford to a second yellow card in the 61st minute for a foul on Nathaniel Garcia.

And in the 65th minute Gerard Williams was also directed to the dressing rooms with a direct red card from referee Moore after the Connection defensive midfielder cut down Garcia on a counterattack by Central.

However Connection, thanks to the arrival of attacker Hashim Arcia, had their best moves forward while down to nine men.

Arcia, who scored seven goals in the tournament, saw his header off a Jerrel Britto cross skid off the crossbar in the 84th minute, five minutes after providing a free-kick that substitute Christian Viveros dragged wide of an exposed net.

Connection finally had the ball into the back of the Central net when Benjamin won the ball inside the box before blasting past goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams, who had made the save of the match in the 10th minute to put behind a curling Shahdon Winchester strike.

Despite it all, Connection will join Central at the 2015-2016 CONCACAF Champions League after both sides earned automatic berths at the CCL with their semifinal round wins. Jamaica’s Montego Bay United snatched the third and final Caribbean spot after edging Haiti’s Don Bosco FC 1-0 in the third place match on Sunday.

On Holiday and watched these games. Both Trinidad teams were very very poor on the opening night. Outside of Jan Michael, not one
central player looked good, maybe Akeem. Leston Paul came on and added some spark but it was like Central was scared of a Haitian boys team.
All the big names were shooting blanks.
W had the tougher team from Jamaica and also did not look good Jomal Williams & Gomes being the best and I am being generous.
Yesterday both T and T teams came out agricultural, where was this intensity versus the foreign opponents. The refree was bad, but
both W players deserve what they got RED. Again Jan was Central man, but they as a team played the better game.
Plenty people was saying these two teams had not one Jamaican or Haitian National team players, which raise my eyebrow. Haiti sat near by
me and they look like an U21 team

Also saw the U23 play the Army this morning, all National coaches were present it look like, way too many players hanging on
to this team anyone can see they not Nationals. Welch, Henry, Corbin, Humphreys, Jones, Roach, Readhead (those are the names I picked up) look decent and very good at times. Henry and Corbin play well together. Saw Sam for the first time he looked miles away from a Nashy, so did Watson  from the last u20..

Central FC starting formation vs W Connection

"In what proved to be a tactical masterstroke by Terry Fenwick, the Sharks prevailed 2-1 against W Connection in the ‪#‎CFU‬ ‪#‎ClubChampionship‬ finals. With Jamal Jack, usually a central defender/defensive midfielder, playing as the lone striker and Keion Goodridge, a left back, playing in central midfield, Central FC claimed its first regional title. Jack even scored a goal of the season contender when he lifted the ball over the advancing Archibald in the W Connection goal. Great team performance and a great night for the Couva Sharks."

Congrats Connection although the team looked a little lethargic in performance with lots of unforced errors.
Was fitness a problem? as Mobay was twice as fast to the ball. When last did Connection play a seriously competitive game?
Jamaica team was playing a typical Neanderthal cyah-shoot-straight brand of ball.
Two T&T teams in the Concacaf series. Daiz what we wanted. Good news for a change. Good for the Proleague.
Haiti should take the 3rd spot.
Jamaica teams are traditionally week in the area of shooting and by extension goal scoring. Poor fields and lack of proper coaching at a young age I believe are  contributing factors.  This appears to be a problem for all the teams based on what've saw.

The performances of all the teams that qualified were very poor. Unless they improve drastically in the near future they will get embarrassed by the Central American and US clubs in the Champions League.

Terry’s gamble: How Central edged Connection to the Caribbean Cup
By Lasana Liburd (wired868).

Wired868 breaks down the 2015 Caribbean Club Championship final with help from Central FC coach Terry Fenwick, captain Marvin Oliver and W Connection assistant coach Earl Jean:

“I’m absolutely delighted,” said Central FC coach Terry Fenwick. “It is a fantastic feeling to come back in and have such a great run of games with nine consecutive wins. To be Caribbean champion is what every club wants in the region and it gives us a stepping stone for CONCACAF.

“And not just the players but me as a coach. I want to be noted for that.”

Central went into last night’s final on the back of the 2014/15 Pro League title and the First Citizens Cup while a date against Caledonia AIA in the Pro Bowl final awaits this Friday. The “Couva Sharks” are built for now and half of their team will be free agents by month’s end.

In contrast, Fevrier’s young team is at the start of its building process.

However, the absence of both Central strikers Willis Plaza and Dwight Quintero and dependable right back Kaydion Gabriel, through a combination of injury and suspension, unbalanced the Sharks, who had just 16 players to choose from in the final.

Connection had their problems too.

“We had five players that we could not make a decision on until the last minute,” said Connection assistant coach Earl Jean. “Mekeil (Williams) and Maurice (Ford) had knee injuries, Triston (Hodge) felt his hamstring, Hashim (Arcia) had a fever and Shahdon (Winchester) actually left camp yesterday because of a knock on his shin.

“At 3 pm, Shahdon called and said he would come and fight it and see… It wasn’t normal preparation for us.”

Two physically demanding Caribbean Cup semifinal affairs on Friday—and Central needed extra time and penalties to get past Haiti’s Don Bosco FC—had taken its toll. Here, both camps took markedly different approaches.

Hodge was ruled out while Arcia came off the substitutes’ bench. But captain Mekeil Williams, Maurice Ford and Shahdon Winchester all played from the start as Fevrier and Jean kept faith in their regular XI.

Fenwick had no choice with Gabriel, Plaza and Quintero. But he sprung a surprise in leaving out versatile midfielder Sean De Silva and, most jarringly, Central’s best player, Ataulla Guerra.

“Ataulla is the franchise player for Central FC and the Trinidad and Tobago national side,” Fenwick told Wired868, “but sometimes he gets that syndrome where he thinks he doesn’t have to tackle (and) close down (opponents).

“He is our top player with his silky skills but then we end up playing a man less when we don’t have the ball…

“(I think dropping Guerra) wakes everyone up and gets a reaction from the other players in the side. They recognise nobody is bigger than the team and I really felt we could win without them.”

It was not a case of a straight swap either. Central started with Keion Goodridge, a muscular and inelegant left back, in central midfield along with forgotten man Jean-Luc Rochford, who made his first start under Fenwick.

Both played on either side of the 39-year-old Marvin Oliver while Jamal Jack, an aggressive but versatile defender, played his first game at centre forward.

Oliver, who wore the captain’s armband, appeared to be invaluable in helping sell Fenwick’s sometimes unorthodox approaches to his teammates.

“I wasn’t surprised (at the starting line-up),” Oliver told Wired868. “It was something we did with Jabloteh already in terms of playing guys out of position when we needed players who were strong and fit or to outmuscle (our opponent).

“It was unorthodox but we had a game plan and we stuck to our plan.”

Connection started conservatively due to the uncertainty regarding several first-team players. The “Savonetta Boys” clearly hoped to win the match in the second half.

“Because of the injuries, we had to see how well we could hold up in the first half,” said Jean. “We were playing a cautious game. We planned to stick to our game plan, which was to have more control and possession of the game.

“Then, we would have assessed at halftime.”

Winchester had a good chance in the ninth minute as he flicked over bar from 10 yards after a left side cross. But that was against the run of play.

Central dominated much of the first 25 minutes and Goodridge and Rochford both got decent shooting opportunities—the former from inside the box.

It was not that the Sharks were playing slick, attractive football. But they were forcing errors in Connection’s half of the field where Gerard Williams, Alvin Jones and Mekeil were harassed constantly.

“I always feel if you get on top of Gerard Williams and swamp him, you can break Connection down,” said Fenwick. “I think he is a good competitor but I don’t think he is a good footballer… Jackie also did a great job for us, closing down and unsettling players.

“I knew their defenders would be unsettled with Jack stomping around and trying to shut them down.”

Still, it took a goalkeeping error to separate the two teams. Marcano’s speculative left footed effort appeared to have been taken comfortably by Connection custodian and St Kitts and Nevis international, Julani Archibald, in the 27th minute.

But either the slippery conditions or Rochford’s movement off the ball distracted Archibald and he dropped the ball on his landing. And Rochford, a two-time Trinidad and Tobago World Youth Cup player, was rewarded for charging the box with a simple tap-in for Central’s opener.

“Julani had a lapse in concentration and he has to learn to land softer with the ball,” said Jean. “But he is a young lad who has had a really good season with us.”

For the last ten minutes, Central wilted a bit as Colombian midfielder Yhon Stiven Reyes began finding space to link with Connection’s front three.

And Winchester nearly conjured up a fine equaliser in the 34th minute but for a fine flying save by Central custodian Jan-Michael Williams.

Guyanese match referee Sherwin Moore was struggling too and was easily below the standard set by Jamaica’s Karl Tyrell, who officiated in the semifinal.

Ford was cautioned for a late challenge on Oliver while the latter player received his obligatory booking for dissent. But Central’s Nathaniel Garcia escaped uncensored with a dangerous aerial challenge on Gerard—one of four Williams-es on the field—while Gerard and Jones were not booked for lunging tackles on Jack and Oliver respectively.

At halftime, Fenwick warned his players to keep the ball away from Reyes. Whereas Fevrier and Jean pondered about wrestling control in central midfield where Jones, a right back by trade, looked rattled.

“We wanted to get our players into their rhythm and to keep them calm (at halftime),” said Jean. “We had a chat with Arcia too because we wanted more dominance in midfield. But we were not confident that he could have given us everything (for 45 minutes).”

The first 10 minutes of the second half were even. Winchester, who has a great record against Central, was a handful and dragged his teammates along with him. While Devaughn Elliot produced an energetic and forceful performance at left back.

In the 57th minute, Arcia replaced Jones. Fenwick responded, two minutes later, by swapping the tiring Rochford with Guerra.

In the 60th minute, Ford tripped Garcia and received his second caution and a red card. Colombian defender Christian Ocoro Viveros and speedy attacker Neil Benjamin Jr were preparing to come on at the time. But Fevrier and Jean delayed the change to discuss a new approach.

They still had not made their move when, five minutes later, Central’s bustling pair of Goodridge and Jack closed down Reyes and Shannon Gomez in quick succession. And Gerard responded to shut down the Sharks’ promising counter attack with a crude tackle on Garcia.

Moore showed Gerard, also a Kittian international, a straight red card.

“The second (red card) especially took the wind out of us,” said Jean. “We had to take out ‘Chinee’ (Reyes) and put in Viveros because we knew Chinee wouldn’t have the legs (in such circumstances).”

Viveros was barely on the field for a minute when Central doubled their lead. Winger Jason Marcano played a brilliant, angled pass behind the Connection defence and Jack produced a clever clipped finish for the most important goal of his career.

Fevrier reacted again and Benjamin was introduced, although not in the conditions that Connection initially intended to use him.

“We knew (Central) would be tired because they played an extra half hour (in the semifinal),” said Jean. “So we always wanted to use ‘Benjie’ in the second half. Unfortunately, some of the guys were not using the space in front of Benjamin well enough and playing the ball for him to run on to.”

At the other end, Fenwick was trying to close down the game as he replaced Garcia and tiring defender Akeem Benjamin, who had a fine Caribbean Cup, with midfield technicians Leston Paul and De Silva.

“I reverted to Leston Paul and De Silva when they had a man sent off,” said Fenwick, “because I felt that was the time to keep possession better and move the ball around. And I thought we got chances then.”

Central, predictably, were dangerous on the break against nine players. But Jack was still at centre forward and his passing left a lot to be desired. Guerra, in particular, was constantly frustrated by Jack’s inability to work a proper wall pass.

Remarkably, Connection created more opportunities than ever in the final 15 minutes. Was that testimony to a lack of intensity after Fenwick’s three changes? Had Central grown complacent?

Or was Arcia able to have such a galvanising effect on even an undermanned Connection team?

Viveros wasted a golden opportunity in the 79th minute after an Arcia free kick found him unmarked in the opposing penalty area while Jerrel Britto and Arcia also went close.

Archibald did well to deny Jack in the 84th minute, after a threaded De Silva pass, but Connection ended strongly and deserved their late goal.

Goodridge, who dropped into central defence after Benjamin was withdrawn, lost possession on the edge of his own area and his namesake, Connection’s Benjamin Jr, finished with poise.

Both coaches saw the closing 15 minutes differently.

“I felt relatively comfortable until we made a mistake ourselves,” said Fenwick. “They were shooting from distance and I thought we contained them very well.”

Jean felt Connection might have clawed their way back with an earlier goal.

“They scored the two goals and they deserved the victory,” said Jean. “We could have won but they took their chances. That is how football is.

“Now we know there is a challenge in (Couva) with two big teams.”

Central’s players and staff have been embroiled in a bonus dispute with the club’s board in recent weeks. Perhaps Central operations director Kevin Harrison might view Oliver’s conciliatory tone after the final to be even more valuable than trophy.

“With our play, you can see it wasn’t really on the guys’ mind,” said Oliver. “It got blown out of proportion…

“It was just a breakdown in communication after Brent (Sancho) became Sport Minister and left the club.”

So will the players accept Central’s offer of 10 percent from the Pro League’s million dollar first prize? Or did they get the 50 percent demanded for players and staff?

“The final decision is we had a great season,” said Oliver, with a smile. “I don’t want to get into it much. But whatever happens, the guys will be satisfied…

“All in all, the guys really love Central. We are not just about the money.”

Fittingly, Oliver, who Fenwick suggested would become a great coach when he retires, was happy for a composed finish to a frenetic affair and a topsy-turvy season.

“It is an excellent, magical feeling to be Caribbean champion,” he said.

Jean promised that Connection will return stronger than ever to reclaim their crowns next season. More intriguing Couva Clasicos are on the way then.
