Regional Under-15 Tournament starts Tuesday in Jamaica
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Holders Trinidad & Tobago will start their defence against Windward Islands at the Kensington Cricket Club ground, when the Regional Under-15 Tournament opens on Tuesday, July 22, in Jamaica.
In the other first round matches of the tournament: Hosts Jamaica face Barbados a few kilometres away at Up Park Camp, the Jamaica Defence Force ground, and Guyana meet Leeward Islands on the other side of the Jamaica capital of Kingston, at the Melbourne Club ground, where the likes of legendary West Indies fast bowlers Michael Holding and Courtney Walsh played in their formative years.
This year, the Regional Under-15 Tournament – in its 19th season – will be contested under a round-robin format, featuring five rounds of 50 overs-a-side matches with the team accumulating the most points being declared champions.
T&T captured the title for the seventh time last year, when it was staged in the south-western Jamaican parish of St. Elizabeth, by topping the points table following victories over Windwards, Leewards, Guyana and the home team. Their only loss came against traditional sporting rivals Barbados.
The two-island republic’s side narrowly edged out the Windwards for the top spot, with Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica and the Leewards following.

Trinidad and Tobago will start their Regional Under-15 title defence against the Windward Islands in the opening round of the 2014 competition at Kensington Cricket Club ground in Jamaica today.
The T&T contingent, led by prolific Under-14 batsman Kirstan Kallicharan, left for Jamaica early yesterday morning, confident that they will return with the trophy.
Kallicharan was also in charge of the team last year when he led T&T to victory in what was then a two-day format with each team batting twice.

T&T U-15s make winning start

Trinidad and Tobago got their West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Under-15 title defence off to a perfect start with a six-wicket victory over the Windward Islands at Kensington Cricket Club in Barbados yesterday.
Despite being beset by cramps to their players in the field, T&T were able to restrict the Windwards to 130-9 from their allotted 50 overs. Johnnel Eugene, with a patient 57 from 118 balls, was the only batsman to offer any resistance.
Trinidad and Tobago had a moderate start in their response, at 30 without loss in the 14th over, when Joshua James (11) retired hurt, which prompted a mini collapse, but Cephas Cooper, with an unbeaten 44, and skipper Kirstan Kallicharan, 22 from 13 balls, ensured that the champions got their campaign off on a winning note.
Scores: Windward Islands 130-9 (50 overs); Trinidad & Tobago 134-4 (45.5 overs).
Winning coach Glen Dwarika told the Jamaica Observer that in spite of the rough conditions, his team was able to stick to the game plan, which was the reason for their dominance.
“When we were bowling we gave them a target of about 135-140; our strike bowlers stuck to their task and we were able to limit them to that total.
“We had some slight hiccups in the batting department, our opening batsman pulled a groin muscle and he had to retire hurt, also our captain had a muscle pull while taking a catch, but the boys pulled their weight.”
Dwarika also explained that the game was used to measure the performance of each player, as they were denied adequate preparation time back home due to inclement weather.
“We have some work to do, and we will be doing that in the coming days. We want to hold on to the trophy and in order to do that we have to play twice as hard as last year, and we are hoping to do that.”
His opposite number, Alton Crafton, was disappointed with his team’s performance.
“I am not too satisfied, we did well in patches, but it was not consistent enough for us to get the result we wanted. We didn’t put enough runs on the board, because the middle order didn’t rotate the strike enough and that led to us being slow in the building.”
The T&T bowling attack was led by two wickets each from Te-Shawn Alleyne, Avinash Mahabirsingh, Kallicharan and Nathaniel McDavid.

Defending champions Trinidad and Tobago Under-15s kept their title hopes alive with an easy eight-wicket win over Jamaica in the penultimate round of the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under-15 championships at Elleston Road in Jamaica yesterday.
Nathaniel McDavid grabbed four wickets for five runs in six overs while Cephas Cooper took three for 40 to help dismiss the Jamaicans for 129 off 45.4 overs.
T&T raced to 130 for two off 22.5 overs with the skipper Kirstan Kallicharan leading the way with an unbeaten 60 and the vice captain Cooper chipping in with 24 not out.
T&T opener Chrystian Thurton was also among the runs, hitting 31.
Many local supporters at the venue were left disappointed with the batting, but Jamaica’s coach Oral Simpson widened the net, saying that the “team just didn’t show up in any area” of the game.
Batting first, Jamaica failed to put together any meaningful partnership against the Trinidadians.
Dorrel Thomas top scored with 19 runs, while captain Raewin Senior made only eight. Dominik Samuels (11), the team’s leading batsman this season and scorer of Jamaica’s only century in the tournament, also failed.
Spinner McDavid led Trinidad’s bowling, while medium pacer Cooper and another spinner Avinash Mahabirsingh (2-19) both chipped in with useful spells.
Thomas and spinner Duke Reid took one wicket each for Jamaica.
In other results, the Windward Islands defeated Guyana by 66 runs while Barbados beat the Leeward Islands by 72 runs

Despite a composed century by captain Raewin Senior, host Jamaica went down by 11-runs to Guyana in an intense final round of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Under-15 tournament at Melbourne Cricket Club yesterday.
The win propelled Guyana to the title as defending champions. Trinidad and Tobago went down to Barbados by 34 runs.
Scores: Guyana 248-7 (50 overs); Jamaica 237 all out (50 overs).
With the pitch offering assistance to both batsmen and bowlers, Guyana, after winning the toss opted to bat first. However, they found themselves two wickets down with 48 runs on the board, but Alphius Bookie with a fairly aggressive knock of 37 and Kris Ramnarine with a patient 54 got them back into the game.
Steve Deonarine with an unbeaten 60 from 80 balls and Collin Barlow with a run-a-ball 26 not out then closed out the innings. Senior led the bowling attack with two for 36, as four bowlers ended with one wicket each.
The Jamaicans did not get the start they wanted to their run chase as opening batsman Dorrel Thomas was beautifully bowled by Steven Kamaludin in the second over with five runs on the board. That wicket paved the way for Senior’s solid knock of 113 from 117 balls, inclusive of 11 fours and two sixes which swung the game in Jamaica’s favour.
However, his dismissal sparked a batting collapse and Jamaica went into the last over needing 16 runs, which proved too many in the end, as off-spinner Kevin Sinclair bagged the last two wickets to secure victory for the Guyanese.
Bashkar Yadram (3-46) took most wickets, as Sinclair and Kamaludin chipped in with two wickets apiece.
Coach Julian Moore said that the victory will be celebrated by Guyanese here and at home, as it is their first title at this level in 15 years.
“I am happy and I am sure everybody back home will be happy for this. It has been a while that we haven’t won a regional Under-15 title. The guys knew that...they knew what was expected of them here and they played great cricket throughout the tournament,” said an elated Moore.
