The Costa Rica Women’s team is concerned about Trinidad & Tobago’s speed and physical strength. Kennya Cordner, Ahkeela Mollon, Arin King, and captain Maylee Attin-Johnson are identified as principal players. They even sent a strategist to spy on us during the recent Women’s Caribbean Cup.

Women set for strong challenge in semi-final clash with Costa Rica.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Spirits are high but the focus is real for T&T Women’s Team

That was the description of the Trinidad and Tobago Senior Women’s Team camp in Philadelphia coming from head coach Randy Waldrum on the eve of this country’s CONCACAF Semi-final round clash with Costa Rica on Friday at the Philadelphia’s PPL Park

Waldrum also expressed thanks to the Government of the Republic and the TTFA for the incentive announced to the squad as they continue to embark on qualification for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

The American-born head coach  said there have been improvements to injured players Tasha St Louis, Karyn Forbes, Janine Francois and Ayana Russell.

“I think the spirit is really high. The girls are focused and it’s been that way for all three games so far. I think they are confident but respectful of Costa Rica for sure,” Waldrum told TTFA Media.

He added that the team has improved with every match.

“I’m extremely pleased with the team’s performances. I think they were outstanding against the USA with playing the way I wanted them to. And then against Haiti they showed great resilience and fortitude to get the points with a player down and then we came out and did a great job against Guatemala. We’re not yet close to where I’ll like the team to be but we have gotten better with every game,” Waldrum added.

The former University of Notra Dame University coach pointed out that Petrotrin’s assistance with the training camp in Palo Seco and the TTFA’e efforts to get the team to Dallas for a short training camp ahead of the opening match against USA were vital to the team’s progress.

“I think it was huge, getting the team into Dallas a few days before the first match. And the TTFA, inspite of all the struggles, made the effort to get the team together for the camp. We couldn’t have done this without having the full squad together in such an environment.

We couldn’t have gotten the US-based players to return to Trinidad and so we felt it would be good to get everyone together in Dallas. I have to thank the Association for allowing it and a huge thanks to Petrotrin also for their beach camp and their assistance.”

Waldrum said he saw Anique Walker, Lianna Hinds and Brianna Ryce for the first time during the Dallas camp.

“I would have liked it for a bit longer but I understood we had to work with the resources the TTFA could provide and we’re grateful because it allowed me to see some of these players for the first time and really get them ready for the tournament,” Waldrum said.

In light of the announcement of the incentive by the Government, Waldrum expressed his delight but warned that the players have been told to keep their eye on the main prize.

“We’re all on cloud nine. Some of the girls found out before me and we’re all extremely thankful  and appreciative. I’d like to say special thanks to the Government, Petrotrin and the TTFA including President Tim Kee and Mr Phillips for their efforts and for recognizing what these ladies have done. This couldn’t have come at a better time

“But what I shared with the players last night is it we can pat ourselves a bit on the shoulder but we haven’t achieved anything yet. I challenged them not to lose focus because our goal is not done yet,” Waldrum concluded.

The winner of each semifinal match earns a chance to play for the regional crown in the Championship match, scheduled for 6 PM on Sunday, October 26, also at PPL Park. The semifinal losers will play off on Sunday at 3 PM, for the region’s final direct ticket to the Women’s World Cup.

In all, the CONCACAF Women’s Championship will qualify its top three finishers directly to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the fourth-placed team earning the right to face Ecuador – South American qualifying’s fourth place finisher -- in a playoff later this year for an additional World Cup bid. As host of the Women’s World Cup 2015, Canada has already secured its place in next year’s tournament.

Princesses seek World Cup spot in Concacaf battle with Costa Rica.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Top-ranked Caribbean and Central America teams, T&T and Costa Rica, will lock horns tonight in search of a place in the final of the Concacaf Women’s Championship, and more importantly, a spot at next year’s Fifa Women’s World Cup.

The teams will open a semifinal double-header at PPL Park, Chester, Pennsylvania, from 5.30 pm, before Group A winner, USA and Group B runner-up, Mexico, clash from 8.30 pm.

Tonight’s semifinal opens three opportunities for the local women, fondly dubbed the Soca Princesses, to secure their first ever spot at a Women’s World Cup. A win will guarantee that while a loss will mean T&T will try again in Sunday’s third place playoff.

The winner of the third place match will also qualify for the World Cup, while the loser will earn a “half spot” in a two-match intercontinental playoff against Comnebol’s Ecuador for the final qualifying spot between the two confederations.

But coach Randy Waldrum and his charges would be keen to see his team secure that much desired World Cup berth in one go.

“I think the spirit is really high. The girls are focused and it’s been that way for all three games so far. I think they are confident but respectful of Costa Rica for sure,” he said ahead of tonight’s fixture.

“I’m extremely pleased with the team’s performances. I think they were outstanding against the USA with playing the way I wanted them to. And then against Haiti, they showed great resilience and fortitude to get the points with a player down and then we came out and did a great job against Guatemala. We’re not yet close to where I’ll like the team to be but we have gotten better with every game,” Waldrum added.

Tonight, T&T, which advanced from a runner-up finish in Group B with one loss (1-0 to the USA) and two wins (1-0 to Haiti and 2-1 to Guatemala), will match up against a Costa Rica team which has scored three times more goals—nine, and has conceded two after three straight wins, one of which was against Mexico.

Like T&T, Costa Rica was a cut above the rest in its qualifying tournament. The team won each of its matches prior to the Concacaf event, including a 3-0 victory over host team Guatemala in playoff/final.

And, while Costa Rica has proven to be a tactically sound team, it has its own reservations regarding T&T. The team’s technical assistant, an observer in T&T’s prior matches, admitted T&T’s strength and speed and quality in the likes of forward Kennya Cordner, newly converted winger, Ahkeela Mollon, and captain Maylee Attin Johnson could be a problem.

“Trinidad is similar to Jamaica: very fast and strong. It has a system similar to that seen in the tournament with 4-3-3. We must further strengthen the analysis and enhance our strengths,” the technical assistant was quoted as saying in La Nacion, a news source of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s line-up boasts a number of potent attackers in the likes of Caronline Venehas (9) and Raquel Rodriguez Cedeno (11).

Venegas scored the lone goal in Costa Rica’s win over Mexico and another pair against Martinique in the team’s 6-1 win, while Cedeno scored the winning goal against Jamaica and another two goals against Martinique only three minutes after coming on as a late substitute. Another player to watch is two-time UEFA Champions League winner, Shirley Cruz Traña, a marshall in Costa Rica’s midfield.

On the other side, T&T received a boost in the return of starting goalkeeper Kimika Forbes, who served a one-match ban after her expulsion against Haiti.

A handful of players who suffered slight injuries before and during the tournament including Tasha St Louis, Janine Francois, Karyn Forbes and Ayanna Russell are said to be fit to play, while Cordner, the team’s top scorer, Mollon, assist leader, and other starters have gotten ample time to recuperate after playing their three group matches in five days.

T&T Squad

Kimika Forbes, Tinesha Palmer (GK); Ayanna Russell, Rhea Belgrave, Arin King, Liana Hinds, Brianna Ryce, Khadisha Debessette, Lauren Hutchinson, Patrice Superville (Def); Khadidra Debessette, Maylee Attin Johnson, Janine Francois, Karyn Forbes, Anique Walker (Mid); Mariah Shade, Dernelle Mascall, Tasha St Louis, Ahkeela Mollon, Kennya Cordner (Fwd).

Fixtures

Costa Rica v T&T, PPL Park, Chester, Pennsylvania, 5.30 pm

USA v Mexico, PPL Park, 8.30 pm

Soca Princesses look for World Cup spot
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Glory Road

It’s D-day. The day either Trinidad and Tobago or Costa Rica qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time.

The teams go for an automatic qualifying spot into next year’ s World Cup in Canada, when they meet from 4.30 p.m., today in the first of two semi-finals at the 2014 CONCACAF Women Championship at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Later at 7.30, the No.1 world-ranked United States take on Mexico in the second semi-final. Both winners earn direct berths into the final. The two losers will meet again on Sunday for a third automatic World Cup spot, while the team eventually finishing fourth can also reach the World Cup via a two-leg playoff against the South American third-placed finishers.

Yesterday, head coach Randy Waldrum was elated with the incentive announced by the Trinidad and Tobago Government for the team. Following discussions with the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA), Sport  Minister Rupert Griffith has pledged each player $50,000 for their efforts in the qualifying series.

“A huge thank you to Dr. (Rupert) Griffith, Mr. (Raymond) Tim Kee, & Mr. (Sheldon) Phillips for what you did for our T&T women national team,“ Waldrum said via twitter.

He also told TTFA Media: “We’re all on cloud nine. Some of the girls found out before me and we’re all extremely thankful  and appreciative. I’d like to say special thanks to the Government, Petrotrin and the TTFA including president Tim Kee and Mr (Sheldon) Phillips (general secretary) for their efforts and for recognising what these ladies have done. This couldn’t have come at a better time.”

However, the coach also added: “But what I shared with the players last night is it we can pat ourselves a bit on the shoulder but we haven’t achieved anything yet. I challenged them not to lose focus because our goal is not done yet.” Waldrum also noted that his team’s performances in the tournament had been improving. He said they showed “great resilience and fortitude” against Haiti to “get the points with a player down.”

“We’re not yet close to where I’ll like the team to be but we have gotten better with every game,” he said. And with so much at stake this afternoon, Waldrum will be expecting his players to up the their level yet again.

T&T Squad: - 1. Kamika Forbes (GK), 4-Rhea Belgrave, 5-Arin King, 16-Brianna Ryce; 20-Lauren Hutchinson, 15-Liana Hinds, 7-Dernelle Mascall, 13-Anique Walker, 9-Maylee Attin-Johnson (Capt.), 12-Ahkeela Mollon, 19-Kennya Cordner, 2-Ayanna Russell, 18-Khadisha Debessette, 6-Khadidra Debessete, 11-Janine Francois, 8-Patrice Superville, 14-Karyn Forbes, 10-Tasha St Louis, 3-Mariah Shade, 17-Tenesha Palmer (GK).

Good the ladies.

My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man - Proverbs 3:1-4.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race [is] not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all - Ecclesiastes 9:11-12

To Maylee Attin-Johnson.

You are exceptionally talented in your own rights and the captain of the team. Lead by example and control Costa Rica's midfield general, Shirley Cruz Trana, and your team has a chance of winning this game. Don't, and you could be looking at the third place playoff game to qualify for the next round. That could be a very risky proposition, psychologically.

Good luck Princess Warriors and may the force be with you.

First poor piece of defending I've seen by Arin King for the tournament. Didn't recognize the danger and was on the wrong side of her opponent.

T&T has not played their usual football at all in this game. Not sure why they are playing so slow and unsettled.

They need to take the game to CR in the 2nd half and dictate the pace.

HALF-TIME: Costa Rica Women 1-0 T&T. Goal scored by Carolina Venegas in the 18th minute.

This is the worst half of de tournament we've played so far. The only good thing is that we're only down 1-0. Hopefully we'll come out with guns blazing in the second half.

We are a bit too static. Support of the player in possession has to improve ... particularly in wide, advanced areas.

Yet, yuh could see that there was caution re: incorporating numbers into the attack ... concede a second and salt.

Should really be a nil-nil affair, despite CRC's superiority during the 1st half.

It should be noted that we did not have a single shot at goal for the entire 1st half and also did not have much possession and keep losing the ball to CR easily.

This needs to change in the 2nd half if we wish to compete and at least pull a goal back.

Costa Rica like they playing with 15 players, fuss they pressing and hunting in packs.  We need to be more competitive in going after loose balls.  Technically it's night and day, the gulf between CR and us.  King having a tough game.

Still too much kicking the ball away to no one in particular, especially under little pressure. A little too responsive on defense, but for all of that we're still in it. Attin-Johnson is working her socks off, but needs someone else to step up and provide some additional quality. CR is organised and clearly technically a better unit, but I don't think that they're beyond our ability to score.

Given Cordner's contribution with her head, the crosses and set plays have been disappointing. Given the difference in technical and tactical ability, you figure our girls should be doing more when they get them. Still, this has been our most promising period of the match.

We need to chill, stay composed in defense and look to hit them on the counter.  But other than that we need to play for penalties, I'll take my chances with we goalie, the technical superiority of the Costa Rican outfield players notwithstanding.

You're right, it shows in this game. In a game when the team is unsettled you need the midfield to control things keep thing simple in an effort to build confidence.

Costa Rica like they playing with 15 players, fuss they pressing and hunting in packs.  We need to be more competitive in going after loose balls.  Technically it's night and day, the gulf between CR and us.  King having a tough game.

I am unable to watch the game. But just like i mentioned about the game against Guatemala. Now we have met our match. CR has more speed than the Guats. and that is a serious problem for us.

We played a much better game second half, midfield still non-existent, but overall we started to hound CR into mistakes.

Offside save we.  King fall asleep again.

Yeah, the angle on the replay wasn't the best, but I wasn't sure that she was offside either.

On to penalty kicks. This is a lottery, so probably our best chance to win at this point. Belgrave missing for the final match (1st-2nd or 3rd-4th) will be big.

I would quibble with the penalty order, and at least one of the kickers.

Kudos to CRC. I like the choice of a lefty taking the 3rd kick. Frankly, we made it easy for CRC because there was no disguise or guile on any of the PKs.

On another night, my captain puts that in the net, but she wouldn't have taken my first pk. Lauren was always going to be about power over placement.

Last year I was fortunate to be at the NJCAA D-I Women's tourney ... there was a player there who took a couple penalties during competiton ... she relied on an unorthodox zig zag approach to the ball that mesmerized both keepers she faced. Her entire movement (fluid) and contact with the ball was rehearsed. Nothing about our penalties tonight looked considered.

Put it this way: if CRC researched our kickers, they couldn't have done any better than tonight's outcome. I doh think the outcome turned on the CRC keeper being excellent. We didn't take convincing kicks.

Anyway, there should be more Tony DiCicco on air and less of the rambling others who bring so little to commentary.

US just beat Mexico 3-0. US kind of shut it down after the third goal. It could have been 5.

Mexico is very tactical. They might give our women some problems in the middle. Our strength, speed, and size might be the deciding factor. I think we will pull it off in the end.

Reality check!! Both Costa Rica and Mexico are currently better teams than T&T. But if T&T can play our best game of the tourney on Sunday and break up the Mexicans game and not allow them to dictate the pace then we stand a chance of beating them.

It will not be easy but if all the Princesses raise their game on Sunday and everything clicks with them passing and ball possession wise, etc then we can hopefully shock Mexico and pull off a victory.

US just beat Mexico 3-0. US kind of shut it down after the third goal. It could have been 5.

US also hit both posts and the crossbar.  Mexico couldn't deal with their speed and clinical touches.  We have one of two, hopefully we could deploy our speed to good effect against them.

oh scroll to the right u will see where i told cordner work on penalty kicks :D

Cordner didn't kick... Attin-Johnson, Hutchinson and Shade did.

Bakes I've never been more proud of a TNT performance men or women. The 3-0 comeback against Iran is ranked right there with this game.  On paper Costa Rica were a better team and they showed it tonite, we played like US mens team with the grind and we had to. I called the penalty kicks because I knew it would be a draw, at times I have these visions of results it's hard to explain.. But i called it man,
sometimes you get luck and sometimes ur unlucky. We had luck tonite on both the offside call and the penalty claim. The girls need to work on the discipline with all these cards, but if you are chasing second balls and grinding bookings will happen.

Credit to both teams, it was very exciting end to end action, always liked the ticas and how they move the ball and create chances. I have every confidence going into the mexico game. No expectations though, just hoping for another quality game, either way concacaf will be well represented in Canada.

Are you 100% sure Mexico is currently  better than TT? We conceded 1 goal  against the US, while Mexico  conceded  3. Mexico lost to Costa Rica  by a goal.  We tied Costa Rica  but lost on penalties. Based on those results, its hard to argue for Mexico. So no need for a reality check.

I agree with you Shotta... I'm very proud of the ladies.  To be completely honest this is the first time I've ever followed our Women's team this closely and I've been hugely impressed.  I don't think they're yet to play a complete game, but I love how they've rallied each time the performance flagged.  Forbes is clearly the standout player for me, but Mollon has been a revelation.  I've been following the reports on this site about her, but this was the first time seeing her play.  She's a nice little player.  I like Cordner too, both she and Attin-Johnson were a bit inconsistent, but I thought they stepped their play up when we needed them to.  King had a tough game tonight, but overall she's been a real revelation and I hope her performances parlays into a professional opportunity somewhere.

Much improved than previous outings by the women's team, but we can't accept mediocrity. We have a good way to go still but the improvement is impressive. Still have to step it up. We are lacking creativity in the midfield.
Maylee was off her game today. Didnt see her on the ball much especially in that first half.
I've seen St. Louis before but she looks totally out of it in this tourney. Is she carrying an injury? unfit? whats going on with her? she looks like a totally diff. player than what i know

To comment on "gawd on pitch".....That type of reasoning makes no sense whatsoever
We fought well against the USA but were lucky AND Forbes had a great game as well. On another day it could hv been worse for us.

Use that same type of logic in the past Men's WC....see if it makes sense.

It is a work in progress, we know.
But we need to possess the ball much more and not rely on long balls over the top as much.

Again, creativity in midfield is lacking.
Costa rica had a couple that were on point. Especially the one who plays for PSG..think it was #17 and #10 (could be wrong)

love the composure at the back shown by King and the aggressiveness of Belgrave and Forbes (GK)
Need to get the striker involved with some balls played into her foot. Get her active rather than run shuttles whole game chasing long balls.

I wish them luck on sunday and we are definitely in with a good chance. Gotta step it up vs the Mexicans

okay. We got lucky against the US. I understand  that. However,  I don't think there is much daylight between TT and Mexico.  All we have are the recent results to go by. I think that is enough to give a good argument for TT.

"Gawd..." my point was really saying that because mexico conceded 3 and we only conceded 1 , that wasnt a good yard stick to use to compare us and mexico.

we could have conceded 5. USA missed some easy chances as well.
We lost same way. Losing 1-0 and 3-0 gives u the same amt of points.
I'm tired of accepting mediocrity with out national teams. As much as i can see the great effort, I cant be happy with the result

I hope somehow the TTFA gets their stuff in order and proper coaching and funding for the team is considered. We have a nice group of players, and from these performances there probably will be other foreign based players at the collegiate level and semi-pro level that may be interested in representing the national team as well. We have seen how great they have performed.

Costa Rica edge Soca Princesses on penalty kicks.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Not just yet

GOALKEEPER Dinnia Diaz produced three penalty kicks stops as Costa Rica edged Trinidad and Tobago women’s national team 3-0 on spot-kicks, becoming the 18th team to book its spot among the 24-member cast for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, to be played in Canada.

Diaz stopped shots from Soca Princesses’ captain Maylee Attin-Johnson, Lauren Hutchinson and Mariah Shade, as T&T missed its first three, while the ‘Ticas’ converted all three of theirs. It took spot kicks to separate the two teams trying to reach the World Cup for the first time, after the first 120 minutes of play ended in 1-1 tie. The teams were also evenly balanced 1-1 at the end of the 90-minute regulation period.

T&T now have to quickly regroup for tomorrow’s third-place playoff, where they meet Mexico, for another automatic World Cup qualifying spot. However, T&T will be without centre-back Ria Belgrave, who was sent off in the final minute of extra-time.

Earllier, Costa Rica had several good chances and looked the better team for an hour against a nervous T&T. The Central American champions went into the half leading 1-0 through a 19th minute goal from Carolina Venegas.

The ‘Ticas’ controlled the first half play, had the better chances, and were ahead when Venegas got between T&T central defender Arin King and goalie Kamika Forbes, and put a low finish onto Acosta’s pass across the penalty area.

But T&T fought back to pull level in the 74th minute, with USA-born right-back Lauren Hutchinson heading in Canada-born Arin King’s free-kick. T&T keeper Kamika Forbes also kept them in the match with three crucial stops, and Costa Rica also had Wendy Acosta’s back post goal ruled offside 11 minutes into the first half of extra-time.

US just beat Mexico 3-0. US kind of shut it down after the third goal. It could have been 5.

Mexico is very tactical. They might give our women some problems in the middle. Their strength, speed, and size might be the deciding factor.

Yeap technically, tactically and speedwise Mexico are better than us but on any given day if we play our A game and are able to break up the Mexican's natural game then we can beat them.

9 out of ten times we will not lose to the USA but 1 goal and hold Costa Rica 1 - 1 in full time when they clearly played the better football and were unlucky not to score more goals against us.

However I am very proud of my team and if they keep regularly playing quality opponents and get the right preparation games then they will eventually improve to become as good as or better than both Costa Rica and Mexico. Catching and becoming as good as or better than the USA the current World Champs should be the ultimate goal but there is a lot of work to be done and the TTFA has got to get its act together in order for us to ultimately get there.

Kicking order should have been,

King
Johnson
Cordner (if not hurt)
Mollon
Shade

I don't think Johnson had one of her better tournament so far. Maylee is so much better than she have shown. She spends most of the game trying to catch up.

I understand our approach vs. USA and to a certain extent Haiti. However, after that I am a bit disappointed in that we have some very smart and technical players, yet they were made to look like "scrappers". Not happy with that.

I think we will have to prepare to be Ecuador (or who ever it is down there).

I think Mexico knew they couldn't beat the USA and so started preparing for the 3rd place game. Look at the DNP list.

Subs Not Used: 1-Cecilia Santiago, 5-Paulina Solís, 11-Monica Ocampo, 9-Veronica Charlyn Corral, 16-Karla Nieto, 17-Veronica Perez

It's going to be a tough game for us hope we can somehow get it done.

Thoughtful way of capturing the coach's post-game thoughts. Thanks for that, Mr. Fuentes! Good look.
