Hart selects 23-man squad for Caribbean Cup finals.
Shaun Fuentes (TTFA)

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Stephen Hart has finalized a 23-man squad for the Caribbean Cup Finals in Montego Bay from November 10-17th.

Hart and sixteen players entered a live-in training camp at the Carlton Savannah Hotel in St Ann’s on Monday and will engage in training sessions at the Hasely Crawford Stadium this week. The team opens its Caribbean Cup account against Curacao on November 10th.

Cardiff City forward Kenwyne Jones will captain the team. Hart has invited Iceland-based striker Jonathan Glenn for his first international call, while Finnish-based trio defender Aubrey David and forwards Jamal Gay and Shahdon Winchester have also been invited to join the team.

The players returning to the squad from the recent Caribbean Cup semi final phase which was played in T&T include Jones, Hughtun Hector, Daneil Cyrus, Carlyle Mitchell, Lester Peltier, Khaleem Hyland, Andre Boucaud, Leston Paul, goalkeepers Jan Michael Williams and Marvin Phillip, Yohance Marshall, Ataullah Guerra, Kevan George, Cordell Cato and Kevin Molino.

Hart has also included a third goalkeeper which is Adrian Foncette while Lithuania-based defender Radanfah Abu Bakr has also been named to the squad.

“The squad is a balanced one with a couple new faces which gives me and the coaching staff the chance to have an extra look with the future in mind and moreso the qualification for the 2018 World Cup. We had three decent matches in the semi finals last month in which the team performed creditably and now these Finals presents additional opportunities to see what is available for our general player pool.

These games will also give us valuable experience playing away from home in a tournament format which is good for our preparations for the qualifiers on the road, "Hart told TTFA Media.

“I know the players are all very committed to the doing well and representing their country. They missed out on winning the last Caribbean Cup in 2012, losing in the final and they believe it’s time to go one step better. In saying that, I don’t think there is going to be unwarranted pressure but of course taking the title is always one of the aims.

“But if we can get in some decent performances and secure our qualification for the Gold Cup as well as utilize these matches and the time together as a squad to prepare for the future engagements then I think  in the end  it would be a satisfactory undertaking in Jamaica,” Hart added.

Following the opener against Curacao on  Monday, T&T will also face fellow Group A team French Guiana on November 12th and Cuba on November 14th. Group B includes Jamaica, Antigua/Barbuda, Haiti and Martinique.

The third place match and the Final will be played on November 17th.  The top two teams from each group will qualify for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the winner will also advance to the 2016 Centennial Copa America which is a celebration of the centenary of CONMEBOL and Copa América, and is to be the first Copa América hosted outside of South America.

The TTFA wishes to express its gratitude to the Ministry of Sport, Ministry of National Security and Sportt Company for their ongoing support to the Senior Men’s Team.

Good squad. Well done BraveHart
Keepers: Good to see another keeper being assessed.
Defense: Sorry no Bateau but good to see Justin Hoyte back at wing back as he is impenetrable. Radanfah, although slower than Bateau has his uses at centerback and is very match fit at least. Happy to see rock solid Cyrus, Marshall  and Mitchell. Happy to see Joevin too who may start to show some flair soon.
Mids: Good experiment to see the hungry-to-prove-himself Jamal Gay, now converted to a midfielder where he played in Finland. He could help Jones to be less of THE target man all the time. Everybody else nice.
Strikers: More depth. Good to see experimentation with Glenn and the inform nippy shortman, Shahdon Winchester.
Lets go for it Warriors! Qualify for Gold Cup. Win Caribbean Cup and qualify for Copa America!

I think Bateau was left out so that he can smooth things over with his club who are extremely pissed with him.

Ceasar was probably included in the last squad because Shahdon Winchester was not available. Shahdon is a starter at his club and has been fairly consistent in the goalscoring department, so he gets the nod.

I read that the club was hopeful that he would return this week, and that they had no intentions of releasing him to play in the Caribbean Cup.

I think he chose Hyland & Gay because they play in the MF and Hart seems set on playing 1 FW with Molino roaming behind. Which has worked so far.

Maybe just in training. You can ask a similar question about 1/3 of the side. Some men out of season and some barely playing for their clubs.

Hart selects 23-man squad; Caribbean tournament flouts FIFA medical rules
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

Trinidad and Tobago will send its largest ever contingent for a Caribbean Cup finals tournament next week when the regional competition kicks off in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
The Caribbean Football Union (CFU) allowed “Soca Warriors” head coach Stephen Hart to select a 23-man squad for the 2014 Caribbean Cup after the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) lobbied on his behalf.
Wired868 understands that the CFU competitions flouts FIFA’s medical rules regarding the number of games allowed within an international match window.
According to the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfers of Players: “During any international window a maximum of two matches may be played by each representative team, irrespective of whether these matches are qualifying matches for an international tournament or friendlies.”
A FIFA spokesman confirmed to Wired868 that the world governing body permits players to feature in two international games in the upcoming nine-day international window.
However, the Caribbean tournament features three group matches plus a final or third place play off within that time frame.
This leaves all the member associations involved in the competition open to sanction should any club complain to the FIFA Players’ Status Committee. Penalties could range from a reduction in release time for subsequent internationals to fines and a ban on the association’s right to call the player(s) for international duty.
The Caribbean football competitions have always followed the present format; however, the CFU’s effort to include the region’s more high-profile players has opened the tournament up to scrutiny by foreign clubs that might be less tolerant of the health risk to their employees.
The CFU will not take up the tab for the extra players, though, and will continue to meet the expenses for just 20 players and five technical staff members. Any additional personnel must be funded by the member association.

I think Jamal & Hyland are both chosen as defensive midfielders. I think Jamal new found position has been in defense. In the past we have been trying him at forward. We don't need that at this time, so must be for his defensive abilities. Boucaud has been the better central defensive midfielder consistently, so we need back up for him. Look at our defense, with David & Cyrus back. We have Hoyte & Jones as backup for both defense & Midfield, and Bakr strictly defense.
definte midfield then going with 4. Bou,Mol,Tualla, Pelt..if yuh use one of them as withdrawn..then other mids, performed admirably last session.
We have Jones and 2 forwards who have not seen action with NT, one at all. Ok..we giving a shot. However Plaza and Winchester(if fit), were proven performers although for a short stint. So given we want to carry 2 proven performers and try 2 new guys, who else you will recommend leaving out. My conclusion was Jamal & Khaleem (no anti isis ting intended  :D )

I informed Hart that Plaza & Winchester would be back training with Central a couple of weeks ago. Hart was disappointed to hear this as he had already submitted his squad. He was vexed that the squad must be selected so far in advance (I think it was 19 days in advance). Imagine that he has to select his squad before he can train with them. How difficult is that? Sometimes we criticise national coaches, but the situations they have to work in are very frustrating and inflexible.

FS, how many unattached former Central players you want on the team?

We don't need Plaza and Rundell. We already have Marshall, to many club less players not good.

Good call by Hart, we need to see other players.

Good luck to the team.

The bigger the pool, the better for the future.

Plaza & Winchester are only technically unattached. We applied for their transfer of registration over a month ago via FIFA's Players Status Committee. Even though it's a fairly open and shut case, and with the support of Sheldon Phillips, it's still dragging on.  :frustrated: They have been training with Central and as soon as the registration comes through, they will be playing.

Stephen Hart happy with squad.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

T&T Soca Warriors coach Stephen Hart says he is very happy with his 23-man squad selection for the 18th Caribbean Football Union Cup Finals which comes off in Montego Bay, Jamaica from November 11 to 18.

In Jamaica, T&T, record eight-time winners will compete in Group A of the eight-team tournament against Curacao, its first opponent on Tuesday, French Guiana (November 15) and defending champions Cuba, two days later.

Pool B comprises three former winners in Haiti (2007), Jamaica (1991, 1998, 2005, 2008, 2010) and Martinique (1993) alongside former top ranked CFU team, Antigua & Barbuda.

For the final stage of the competition, Hart made a few changes to the squad drafting five players who were not involved in the semifinal round which T&T topped on home soil.

This after beating Dominican Republic (6-1), St Lucia (2-0) and Antigua & Barbuda (1-0) to end with maximum nine points at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva last month.

However, despite advancing without hiccups, Hart stated that he intended to tweak his roster a bit, in order to get the right balance to deal with the rigours of potentially playing four matches in eight days which he described as being absurd.

And coming into the squad announced on Tuesday by the former Canada coach are un-capped Iceland-based former St Anthony’s College striker Jonathan Glenn, Finnish-based trio Aubrey David, Jamal Gay and Shahdon Winchester as well as Lithuania-based defender Radanfah Abu Bakr and Japs North East Stars goalkeeper, Adrian Foncette.

The players failing to retain their places were Belgium-based defender Sheldon Bateau, striker Trevin Ceasar and defender Alvin Jones.

And speaking prior to a training session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Wednesday, Hart admitted to being more comfortable with the composition of the team. “This group gives me much more options to work with tactically, because in the previous round of matches I did not like the way we played when the opposition “parked the bus against us”.

With regards to the call-up of the speedy Glen, Hart noted that he has been aware of the player for a while, and has watched his progressed from playing in midfield to his new strike role.

Regarding the changes in the start of the tournament, the T&T coach said it was both bizarre and fortunate for most teams at the same time.

“It’s bizarre because the change was made with the tournament just around the corner, but at the same time with our team and others having problems with flights into Jamaica, it allows us a little extra time to prepare.”

Looking ahead to the competition, Hart said while everyone would like the team to win the tournament, his main objective as coach is to qualify for the Concacaf Gold Cup.

“Our group will not be easy, and we cannot worry about who we face including the defending champions Cuba, we just have to go out and focus on each match and do what is required to get the job done.”

The T&T coach was also very critical of the scheduling of the matches, saying four matches to be played by a team getting to the last day of the tournament is very unrealistic and somewhat crazy.

He added, “Just like in the previous round, some of the players clubs have already written to us requesting that their players only play two matches over that time frame as stated in FIFA guidelines as the clubs are fuming with the format.

“So once again I will have to rotate the squad wisely as the health of the players is my most important concern, but I am not too concerned as I believe we are capable of producing the results.”

Overall, Hart, who will be involved in his first Caribbean Cup finals and the task of adding to T&T’s previous triumphs in 1989, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001, the first in 13 years said he expects the tournament to be of high quality.

“From what I have heard, Curacao, Martinique, Jamaica and Antigua & Barbuda will all be boosted by additional overseas-based players which some add quality to their teams, making the matches even better,” said Hart.

“But for me, I will just take it one match at a time as I always consider the opening match for any team, for us in this case Curacao to be the most interesting.”

At the end of each round-robin group in Jamaica, the top teams will contest the final, while the second placed teams will meet for third spot.

All four teams competing on the final day will also qualify for next year’s Concacaf Gold Cup while there is also the added incentive that the CFU champions will compete at the 2016 Copa America, against the best of South America.

The best third place team from CFU (according to group stage results) will also have a chance to qualify for the Concacaf Gold Cup via a qualification play-off, against Honduras, the 2014 Copa Centroamericana fifth-placed team.

The last time T&T captured the record eighth regional title was in May 2001 on home via 3-0 win over Haiti at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo with goals from Dale Saunders, Brent Rahim and Arnold Dwarika.

Tournament delay

The Caribbean Football Union via its website posted a statement explaining the delay by 24 hours the start of the 18th CFU Cup in Montego Bay, Jamaica from Tuesday which read: Following the request of at least three participating member associations and the support of several other participating member associations, the CFU Executive Committee has been considering the delay of the Final Round of the CFU Caribbean Cup by one day.

The CFU President and Executive Committee decided to change the dates of the CFU Caribbean. The new dates are November 11-18, 2014.

This change of date will therefore mean that Group A of the tournament consisting of Cuba, Curacao, French Guiana and T&T will commence match play on November 11, with the second and third match days being played on November 13 and 15, respectively. The teams teams in Group A are therefore required to depart on November 16.

Additionally, Group B consisting of Antigua & Barbuda, Haiti, Jamaica and Martinique will commence play on November 12, with the second and third match days being played on November 14 and 16 respectively.

The teams in Group B are therefore required to depart on November 17 while the Championship and Third place playoff will now be played on November 18. The match venue and match times remain unchanged as previously communicated.

Given the concentration of games, a big squad is needed. I figure we will see significant rotation if we progress all the way through. No player should play more than 3 games out of the possible 5 if we can help it.

Strength in depth should serve us well.

Hyland, Peltier to join Warriors in Montego Bay.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

European-based midfield duo Khaleem Hyland and Lester Peltier are among six players named in the Soca Warriors squad for next week’s 18th Caribbean Football Union Cup Finals in Jamaica, who will link up with the team in Montego.

Contacted yesterday, William Wallace manager of the team said Hyland of Belgium’s Racing Genk, Peltier of Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava along with the quartet of Andre Boucaud (Dagenham & Redbridge/England), Kevan George (Columbus Crew/USA), Radanfah Abu Bakr (Kruoja Pakruojis/Lithuania) and Justin Hoyte (Millwall/England) will all journey from their respective clubs on Sunday to link up with the team ahead of their Group matches against Curacao (Tuesday 11), French Guiana (Thursday 13) and defending champions Cuba, two days later. At the end of which the pool winner will advance to the final on November 18, all at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Hyland is expected to line up for fifth placed Racing Genk against sixth placed Standard Liege in a Pro League match on Sunday while Peltier’s Bratislava, fifth on the Super Liga standings tackles third placed Senica, and George’s and his Columbus Crew team-mates will try and overturn a 2-4 first-leg aggregate US Major League Soccer Conference semifinal first-leg score against New England Revolution.

Abu Bakr and his second placed Kruoja faces Suduva in the Lithuanian League and Hoyte is expected to feature for Millwall versus Brentford in the English Championship Division while Boucaud has the weekend off and will just meet the team there.

On Wednesday, US-based midfielder Kevin Molino, T&T’s star player in the semifinal wins over Dominican Republic (6-1), St Lucia (2-0) and Antigua & Barbuda (1-0) which put the team atop the CFU rankings, joined the other players in the 23-man squad called up by coach Stephen Hart as they continued preparations at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

They included Cardiff City striker and team captain Kenwyne Jones, Daneil Cyrus, Marvin Phillip, Adrian Foncette, Jonathan Glenn, Leston Paul, Jan-Michael Williams, Aubrey David, Joevin Jones, Carlyle Mitchell, Shahdon Winchester, Hughtun Hector, Jamal Gay and Ataullah Guerra. Hart is expected to conduct another session today from 5.30 pm before the team departs for Jamaica, in the morning in search of a record-ninth CFU Cup triumph, and first since 2001.

Pool B comprises three former winners in Haiti (2007), Jamaica (1991, 1998, 2005, 2008, 2010) and Martinique (1993) alongside former top ranked CFU team, Antigua & Barbuda.

Hart optimistic ahead of Caribbean Cup Finals

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s football Head Coach Stephen Hart conducted a final training session on home soil at the Hasely Crawford Stadium yesterday evening, ahead of flying out this morning for Jamaica. “It’s been a decent week for us. We got in a few sessions with the players that are here. Of course we will have about six guys who will meet the team in Montego Bay so we should have a full complement of players for the session on Sunday,” Hart told TTFA Media.

“I’ve seen a good effort from the players so far this week and that’s always good. The players have exhibited a strong sense of commitment and I think there is the belief among everyone in the squad that we can achieve our goal and be successful in this tournament. The first objective is qualifying for the Gold Cup next year but of course you go into a tournament wanting to win it also. So there is a lot at stake here and we’ll approach this tournament with the mindset that we’ve got to take care of business,” Hart added.

Iceland-based forward Jonathan Glenn is a new call up to the Soca Warriors. He had his first week of training with the squad and is hoping to make a positive impact during the tournament. “I am very humbled to be part of such a great squad and I’m looking forward to doing my best to contribute to a successful run in the Cup for our country,” Glenn said.

“It’s very special to be selected as it has been a dream to be here. I intend to make the most of this opportunity so I can be considered for future tournaments as well. The preparations itself has gone quite good and I’ve been welcomed into the squad. It’s just about learning more about each of my teammates and trying to give it my best at everything, both on and off the field and in training and game time,” he added.

A couple things from de coach interview:

1 - dem man real enjoy dat part of de session. Yuh always hear about "spirits being high" etc before a tournament and this "spirit" was manifest here. Nice to see and hear

2 - coach mention 4 games in 8 days which is against FIFA statutes. He also said some clubs have said they only want their players playing 2 games in that time period. So don't be surprised if there is heavy player rotation for this tournament.

It means winning the first game is even more critical

Coach can use players for all 4 games of the bench in the 2nd half if some players are told to only play 2 games. This may be more helpful instead of using them for 2 full games seeing that our quality player pool is deep.
