Why not $100 and $50. We want to max out.

I know we need money, but think about when we qualify. So home support is crucial.

Waldrum eyes critical period.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

T&T women’s senior team head coach Randy Waldrum knows fully that the next couple weeks leading up to the December 2 final Fifa World Cup playoff qualifier against Ecuador at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo will be critical towards the chances of moving on.

Waldrum has intentions of putting the players through a fitness programme before resuming full preparations later in November.

“Everything we do from here is going to be critical. The girls will be working with a strength and conditioning coach and then we’ll all be back on the training field to fine tune things in the build up to the game. We have not qualified as yet. Yes it was a great result for us in Ecuador to come away with a point under those circumstances but the door is still wide open for both teams,” Waldrum said.

“Ecuador will feel they also have a great chance as do we. Staying focused and continuing  to the right things with the right intentions is w,” hat will make the difference for us.”

Shaka lauds progress of women’s team.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Shaka Hislop believes the national women’s team has been spurred on by adversity as they continue their quest for World Cup qualification.

Hislop spoke to BBC as he summed up their recent exploits and the situation in Dallas which saw Randy Waldrum appeal for help through twitter.

“The situation gave a bit of a siege mentality,” said Hislop. “It gave the girls real belief in their coach and how much he was fighting in their corner.

“The current administration inherited grave financial straits (since Raymond Tim Kee took over as president). They still have a lengthy list of creditors, a rising bill, and no corporate sponsorship so that’s a challenge.

“The issue the women face is not unique to them. All the teams, including youth teams who have competed in various tournaments this year, have had to endure, and somehow make their way around.

“It would be a huge stride forward for the women’s game,” he said. “Until recently there was no women’s league at all in Trinidad. Before that it was pretty much limited to wherever you can find a game with a boys team who maybe would have you.

“I have daughters who play soccer. I understand the importance of it not just as a spectacle but for the girls themselves and women’s sport in a broader note. They have done a very good job in highlighting some of the issues and some of the values that comes with it.”

That doesnt matter as we need all the help we could get. And if it's big time as he says then making that team is good enough  :beermug: for now. J. Hoyte doesnt play for Millwall

$100 and $200 to see women Soca Warriors.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

The tickets for the December 2 Fifa Women’s World Cup Concacaf/Comnebol second leg playoff between T&T and Ecuador, which go on sale on Monday, are reasonably priced considering the historical significance of the event.

T&T Football Association (TTFA) general secretary Sheldon Phillips expressed this point yesterday, while suggesting that he expects a large turn-out at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, for the Tuesday evening fixture set for a 6 pm kickoff.

Uncovered seats are priced at $100, while the covered section costs $200 to enter. Children under 12 years of age will not be charged for entry.

According to a TTFA release, the tickets go on sale on Monday at outlets to be identified in due course. Tickets will also be on sale on site from 10 am on the morning of the match and gates open from 3 pm.

Commenting on the ticket prices and his expectations of the demand, Phillips said he believes the team has generated considerable interest and that there is the potential for tickets to sell out at the venue, which accommodates roughly 23,000 spectators.

“The ticket prices reflect the immensity of the match. But, if 12,000 to 15,000 supporters turn out for the game, I wouldn’t consider that a failure. That would be the by far the biggest turn-out the women’s team would have gotten,” he added, comparing it to the men’s team, which he said has not been able to attract that many spectators in recent years.”

Stanford has a cohort of defenders with US JNT experience. It's likely that Schmidt's exposure on the TT-17s assisted her entry to Stanford, but in my view she was brought in as a squad player with whatever upside to be cultivated, being a plus.

She doesn't seem to be regarded as a technical player (particularly when placed against the players with whom she would be competing for time), but she clearly has the goods to function in a structured and organized environment, and to contribute to a product over time. The coach who brought her in is still there ... so it's unlikely a question of being out of favor (if anything, he's been consistent in how she has been used ... and she probably knew that going in). He certainly has recruited "around her".

The other thing is that Stanford has midfielders who probably offer defensive coverage ... possibly further restricting her time on the field.

In sum, she's been in a good training environment. Easy conversation to be had Waldrum to Ratcliffe to ascertain her particulars.

I decided to delve a bit further. Consistent with my comments above, I can now confirm that Lauren Schmidt was a recruited/preferred walk-on at Stanford. This explains her career trajectory substantially. And, she was the only defender in her recruiting class ... also, somewhat consistent with the MF defensive coverage thought above.

Anyway ...

Her collegiate goal notched v. Colorado on October 16, 2014:
https://twitter.com/StanfordWSoccer/status/522984911884394498

She also contributed a couple assists v. Oregon State on Senior Night.
Quote
Senior midfielder Lauren Schmidt, who scored her first career goal against Colorado, added two more points to her name, recording her first assist on the year in just the third minute and adding another in the 45th minute on a beautiful cross from the right side to reward a streaking senior midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta arriving directly between Oregon State’s center backs.

Horrible choice of music. Now when we need to have a patriotic backdrop to an advert for a historic Women Soca Warriors World Cup qualification game we get country and western music rather than Soca.

Sometimes you just have to shake your head at the lack of patriotic thinking that goes into producing some of the things we do to promote our country and inspire patriotism.

90 minutes away from glory
By Andre Baptiste (T&T Guardian)

The senior women’s footballers are possibly 90 minutes away from history, and most importantly ensuring that Christmas will be one of the best for those of us who love sport and country.

On December 2, at 6 pm, our Soca Warriors women’s team face Ecuador at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, with the winner moving on to the Women’s World Cup Finals in Canada in June 2015.

Already, there is the expectation and belief that this country, which has disappointed sportsmen and women in the past, will collectively rise to the occasion and pack the stadium to capacity upwards of 25,000.

Ecuador played the first leg of this match in a stadium with around 16,000 supporters, so what one may ask will incentivise the population of this country to throw their fate behind the team.

We only need to look inwardly and discuss what we see. This country’s image has suffered over the years mainly because of off the field behavior and questionable monetary transactions, not least—Life Sports and E Beam, for which many have still to be held accountable.

T&T needs something to hold on to, something or in this case someone, or some group that make us all smile again because smiling is healthy and suggest less stress.

In captain Maylee Attin-Johnson’s team, I have noticed a desire and determination that would appear to have no boundaries, and no hurdles that are too steep.

This young lady reminds me of the former England captain Byran Robson, who was called Captain Marvel, because he never gave up and would run from penalty box to penalty box at tremendous speed.

Against Mexico, when it seemed certain that she would have to be replaced after 35 minutes, Attin-Johnson said “No” and changed her gear and returned to play, not only for 90 minutes, but lasted until 120 minutes. This sort of selfless act can only inspire a team, and it should be utilised to inspire a nation into what true leadership means and what representing your country means.

These brave, disciplined, focused and skillful young ladies have not only found a leader in Attin-Johnson, but also found a mentor in coach Randy Waldrum and full credit has to go to Lincoln “Tiger” Phillips for this.

Waldrum is a man on a mission.

Like most of our coaches, he has not been paid and is working for free. When we interviewed him after the first leg in Ecuador, his opening remarks to the FIFA media stood out.

When asked if he was willing to be interviewed again by the T&T media, he quickly replied: “Yes, they are from home. They are from home; I will talk to them,”

Home for Waldrum was not Dallas where he coaches, but rather our beautiful twin island republic of T&T.

It is this sort of charisma that can inspire others and listening to him and speaking with members of the team, it is easy to understand why some of these players would “give their all for this coach.”

However in a country, such as ours, where there always seems to be efforts to destroy, let us all attempt to stay positive and support these young ladies. Unfortunately, even though it is women’s football, there are several men with large egos involved, each believing that their contribution, their involvement may have been forgotten. This is a time, when we must believe that the entire picture should be analysed and not merely a specific event. We cannot afford any disruption to the program that is moments away from allowing us to qualify.

And while dissension is common in sports, one should not fuel such to achieve personal points at the expense of the young ladies, because there are many who will find this very discomforting and perhaps may turn away their support and in the future not trust such individuals.

There is no doubt that president of the Football Association, Raymond Tim Kee, is not popular and whether that is because of his personality or competence, there are too many unanswered questions which naturally allows football to become unsettled.

Despite all of this, we need to fill that Stadium with a sea of red as the word is that Ecuador will travel with a contingent of 100 supporters, much more than the magnificent 15 that attended in Quito on November 8.

Red is the colour for that day. Everyone should wear “red,” even in your office. It must be a rule, and we must ensure it is done.

I  hope that those sections of the media that ignore women’s football at the expense of men’s football apologise and restore some sort of equity to the coverage.

Let us unite and believe. We must forget old talk, ticket prices, the coach, the Association, Tim Kee, the time of the match and be at the Hasely Crawford Stadium for the 6pm kick off. These are moments in time that do not necessarily come around frequently, so let us all be part of the celebration, and be part of the joy of sports.

Be there to support, our players: Maylee Attin-Johnson (captain), Kimika Forbes ( goalkeeper), Liana Hinds, Lauryn Hutchinson, Arin King, Rhea Belgrave, Patrice Superville, Brianna Ryce, Karyn Forbes, Ayana Russell, Dernelle Mascall, Janine Francois, Mariah Shade, Ahkeela Mollon, Kennya Cordner, Tasha St Louis, Tinesha  Palmer, Khadira Debesette, Anique Walker, Sandra Baron, Afiyah Matthias, Khadisha Debesette, Jasmine Sampson.

Advertising opportunities for companies on Dec 2.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Local businesses and corporate bodies can support the upcoming Fifa Women’s World Cup qualifier between T&T and Ecuador by purchasing advertising field boards for the encounter at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on December 2.

The field boards which are placed on the sidelines and behind the goals on the playing pitch will offer the opportunity for businesses to have a visual branding presence at the venue and on screen as the match will be broadcasted live in Ecuador and several South and Central American countries.

Because of the huge significance of the match with the winner qualifying for the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup, the game will also be shown on several television stations and sports show globally either delayed or via highlights package.

Income generated through field board sales will go towards the development of the national women’s teams as well as other national teams and development programmes.  Interested parties can get more information by contacting the TTFA offices at 623-9500, 681-5429 or 772 0248.

Tickets are currently on sale for the big match at $200 covered, $100 uncovered and kids under 12 free in the uncovered section. Kick off is at 6 pm.

I don't think we hyping this game enough. The TTFA  should be out there beating the bushes to ensure people show up at the game.

Ideas; Competitions and give away should be going on pell mell

1. Radio question of the Day (eg.T&T goal scorer/s from WCQ in the US leg, etc.)
2. Random Ticket and Game Shirt Give away. Eg. Anyone spotted in a T&T shirt get's a free ticket or Original game shirt. Pull up to a sweat in progress and when a man score, give a ticket or a shirt. If KFC is a sponsor, the 100th customer get's something
3. Organize a morning/after work show with one of the TV stations live on promenade with freebies and games to win stuff. Have players present.
4. Have a cross bar challenge and pk shoot out at the training field at HCS or at the QPS for freebies.
5. Players visit schools and give away items
6. Host 2hrs camps, san/do, central, town, east, bago for jr sec and primary schoolers free of charge with the players running it.
7. Win a trip to Tobago if you purchase (luck of the draw) the specially marked Golden (Warrior) ticket. Randomly distributed to ticket outlets.
8. Get field level access, photo op with players, autograph shirt, ball, and photo from players if you luckily purchase a specially marked JR warrior ticket (limited amount).
9. Predict the correct half time score prior to the game on twitter or facebook and win a prize at the game
10. Be at the game as 1 special winner will be selected to attend the WWC in Canada for the opening round games. Airfare, hotel, game tickets, and transportation plus $500 Canucks in spending money.

Things like these should be ongoing in the build up to the game. This will also allow potential sponsors and donators to see the kind of publicity they can recieve as part of the TTFA.

Come on guys lets work.

 :beermug: :beermug:

Someone needs to send this list to Sheldon and the TTFA.

Elan should get a free pair of tickets to the game for coming up with these marketing ideas for the game.

If these ideas are all implemented then the stadium will be ram but the TTFA needs to get some zeal and energy to implement them.

It is not too late to implement all these ideas to generate excitement about the game with just under 2 weeks to go.

Waldrum, players fly in on Tuesday.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

T&T’s senior women’s team head coach Randy Waldrum is expected to arrive in T&T on Tuesday, along with a number of US-based players, and will join the remaining players as they begin preparing extensively for the December 2 second leg Fifa Women’s World Cup playoff match against Ecuador.

The “Women Soca Warriors” will train at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, the venue for the highly-anticipated encounter.

Among the priorities of the coaching staff is to have each player fully fit for what can be described as the match of their lives. T&T will need a win to progress to the World Cup finals as the first match ended goalless.

A draw will not suffice for T&T unless the match also finishes goalless and goes to a penalty shoot-out. If Ecuador scores a goal and T&T fails to win the match, Ecuador will progress to the finals on the “away goals” rule.

Part of making sure the team is fully prepared, two conditioning coaches have worked with the team, along with a doctor and physiotherapist. According to T&T Football Association (TTFA) general secretary, this is crucial to the modern game and part of the flagship programmes or both the men and women’s senior national teams. He said the set-up will be used as a template for all national teams particularly in the lead up for such important qualifiers and tournaments.

History will be made if T&T defeats Ecuador  as the “Women Warriors” will be the first Caribbean team to represent at the Women’s World Cup and the second smallest in population. Phillips said he is working with certain ministries and agencies to see that the occasion lives up to the hype, with the inclusion of entertainment and a way in which to recognise those who have contributed to where the women’s team is currently.

“We need to acknowledge the pioneers of the women’s game, the coaches, the past players, the admins and I think December 2 will be the best time to do that,” said Phillips.

“We want the people to feel good about it. This is a team that believes in itself and they deserve it (to qualify).”

High demand for tickets

The original batch of 10,000 tickets are dwindling and at least a couple thousand more will be printed to satisfy the demand for the December 2, second leg match against Ecuador.

“The ticket sales are brisk,” Phillips said. He did not quote figures but said the TTFA will go forth with an advertising campaign “becoming the 12th warrior” this coming week to ensure the women’s team gets maximum exposure.

The tickets, which cost $200 for covered and $100 for uncovered stands, are being sold at the Fan Club, Kenny’s, Skinner Park, Ramsingh’s Sporting Goods, All Out, Econo Supermarket and at various other locations.

Warrior Maylee
By STEPHON NICHOLAS (Newsday).

THE TRINIDAD and Tobago Women Soca Warriors will be meeting Ecuador on December 2, from 6 pm, for a spot in the 2015 FIFA World Cup in Canada.

The game, carded for the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, is the second leg of a FIFA World Cup play-off. The first leg ended in a goalless draw in Quito, Ecuador on November 8.

Here is a look at Maylee Attin-Johnson, captain of the Trinidad and Tobago women football team....

A LEADER must make sacrifices for the greater good, motivate one’s followers not only by words but by action. No-one epitomises those qualities more than national women’s football captain Maylee Attin-Johnson.

The 28-year-old former Diego Martin Secondary student has been entrusted with leading the Women Soca Warriors into battle on December 2 against Ecuador in what is expected to be a fiery cauldron at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo with a spot in the 2015 FIFA World Cup Finals in Canada up for grabs.

Maylee and the rest of the national team hold the hope of a nation on their shoulders with excitement and interest in women’s football at an all-time high in this country.

After agonisingly missing out on one of the three automatic qualifying places for the Canada World Cup by finishing fourth at the CONCACAF Women’s Championships in the United States, it is the last chance for TT and Maylee is ready to fight for a ticket to football’s grand showpiece.

“It will be the biggest game of our lives. At this moment we are putting everything preparation wise and we are very excited. We have a little bit of butterflies but once you touch off that ball is goal. We’re gonna play with a lot of intensity, a lot of energy and come out with a victory,” she said.

The skipper is relishing the opportunity to create history for her country and dominate the midfield against their South American opponents despite actually playing out of her natural position.

“I am an out and out striker but, due to the team needing a defensive midfielder who the coach trusts to be protective of the ball, I had to play in that position. But I’m a footballer not just a striker or a winger. I’m a footballer so I understand each position on the field and I just go out there and they feed off my energy. I’m very creative as well and play the game as it comes to me,” she added.

The assertive footballer spoke passionately about what it means to wear the captain’s armband for her country and unify a large group of females for one common goal.

“It’s a fantastic feeling. Not everybody can say they’ve captained a hopefully World Cup senior team. It’s a great feeling knowing that you have a group of girls who believe in your leadership and believe in what you stand for. They believe everytime we go on the field that I’m gonna give the team 110 percent and lead them to the best of my ability. It’s a humbling feeling and an honour and privilege. We have our own personalities and egos but the thing that kept us together was that one dream we all have,” she said.

Recollecting the team’s campaign at the CONCACAF tournament, Maylee said she still has nightmares about their heartbreaking 4-2 extra time loss to Mexico in the semi-finals. TT looked on course for a spot in the title match and more importantly an automatic place in the World Cup when Mariah Shade bundled the ball across the line to give the “Warriors” a shock 2-1 lead in the 78th minute. But TT were perhaps still in celebration mode when the game was restarted and saw their advantage disappear instantaneously when the Central Americans equalised just one minute later.

“We lost that focus and concentration for that one second and that was difficult to swallow. I think I should have done a better job calming down the girls and refocussing them to the task at hand, knowing that there were 12 minutes left. I still have nightmares about that but hopefully we can turn that nightmare into dreams,” she declared.

The “Warriors” captain lamented the lack of aid financially that the team receives and is adamant that they can develop into a regional powerhouse if corporate TT believes in them, citing their narrow 1-0 loss against World champions USA.

“They are the number one team in the world in FIFA rank. Going up against a powerhouse who play 8-10 games before a CONCACAF tournament compared to us who played nothing is hard. There is no true investment or finances put into women’s football (but) we were able to stand tall to them.

“We came out with a 1-0 loss but we know every time we step out into the field we could compete with the best of them. Once we get the proper funding and resources to compete at that level on a consistent basis we would be able to do that,” she stated confidently.

Maylee thanked her family and all others who made an input in helping her pursue her dreams and providing that backbone for her to be successful.

“Without a doubt they (family) are my main supporters. With them it’s like life in London, when I come from training I don’t need to do anything. They put everything in place and they are fantastic with that.

“I would say from primary school (I began to play). Mr Baptiste and Mr Thomases, one was a teacher and he was also a coach and there was also a PE teacher and they discovered I was good at playing ball.

“There was also a guy named Mr Hope, he took me on Sundays with the national Under-19 team when they were scouting for players. So that’s how I got involved. I started at a late age,” she concluded.

Fans all set to play 12th man for women.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Fever on for Warriors

The hype surrounding the December 2 Fifa Women’s World Cup second leg intercontinental playoff between T&T and Ecuador is expected to reach fever pitch this week with the thrust of the “Be the 12th Warrior” campaign.

The Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, the venue for the final showdown, can only seat 22,500 spectators and by all indications, almost half have already been claimed by ticket sales.

The tickets are priced at $200 for covered seats and $100 for uncovered seats. Children under the age of 12 can enter free of charge. Tickets will also be sold on match day. That is, if there are any remaining.

Tickets went on sale a week ago at venues including The Fan Club (MovieTowne, Trincity Mall, and Gulf City Mall), Kenny’s, Skinner Park, All Out and according to Sheldon Phillips, general secretary of the T&T Football Association (TTFA), the original batch of 10,000 is said to be quickly diminishing.

So much so that agents have been calling on the TTFA for more tickets to be printed.

Phillips said yesterday, he was happy and excited at the hype and pleased to see so many fans are behind the women.

In an effort to make the experience as memorable as possible, the “12th Warrior” campaign was launched with a special commemorative fan T-shirt being sold for the match.

The original fan tee shirts will go on sale tomorrow at a number of venues including the three outlets of The Fan Club, at a cost of $150 (men and women) and $120 (children).

The Fan Club was contacted yesterday to give an indication of sale of ticket sales and Tyrone Alexander, manager the Trincity Mall branch indicated that his first batch of uncovered tickets were almost sold out. He said he will need to replenish tickets before the store closes today.

According to Alexander, The Fan Club’s most popular branch located in MovieTowne, Port-of-Spain, has almost been unable to keep up with the demand.

The “Be the 12th Warrior” campaign was created to rally support for the Women’s Soca Warriors, who have ambitions of becoming the first country from the Caribbean to qualify for the Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Qualification would see T&T become the second smallest nation, behind Equatorial Guinea to claim such a feat.

Yesterday 22 players were named to enter the live-in camp, led by head coach Randy Waldrum at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, from tomorrow.

Leading forward Kennya Cordner who recently represented T&T at in the women’s competition at the CAC Games in Mexico, has returned to join the team.

The remaining players include captain Maylee Attin Johnson, Ayanna Russell, Patrice Superville, Ahkeela Mollon, Mariah Shade, Janine Francois, Arin King, Khadisha Debbesette, Khadidra Debbesette, Tasha St Louis, Anique Walker, Dernelle Mascall, Jasmine Sampson, Lauryn Hutchinson, Brianna Ryce, Kimika Forbes, along with newcomers in sisters Nia Walcott and Amira Walcott.

Like the Debbesette sisters, the Walcott sisters have both represented T&T at youth level and will now begin preparing for the most important football match of their lives.

The Walcott sisters made headlines in 2010 when they were named in the T&T which hosted the Fifa Under-17 World Cup.

Women ‘Warriors’ enter camp.
T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago’s women Soca Warriors will enter a live-in training camp from tomorrow for their final week of preparations for the all-important FIFA Women’s World Cup final leg qualifying match against Ecuador at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain which takes place next Tuesday.

Head Coach Randy Waldrum will lead his team into the camp with sessions at the Hasely Crawford Stadium and the team will be reside at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Waldrum said the team is in solid shape at the moment but this week will be crucial towards its final state of readiness for the clash with Ecuador.

“We’ll have all the players together this week and we hope to have them all fit and healthy and mentally ready for the match on Tuesday. We’ve had some of the players with the exception of some of them from the US, in training over the past few days with the focus being on strength and conditioning and that went quite well for us,” Waldrum told TTFA Media.

“It’s going to be a big week ahead and I think everyone is ready for it. I know the girls and the staff are all eager and focused and the people who have to get things ready off the field of play at the TTFA and the other personnel are all doing what they have to,” he added.

T&T Swedish-based forward Ahkeela Mollon said the team would not be overawed by the run of events from now until the final whistle on Tuesday. “We’ve been training really hard for the past week and the sessions have been quite good. The mood is really good at the moment and we’re looking forward to this week with all the players assembling in camp,” Mollon said.

“We’re all really excited about the 12th Warrior and the fans coming out and giving us that support. We’re at home but the key for us is to stay focus and humbled and go out there and play as we know we can and get the result,” she added.

Dernelle Mascall says the physical sessions have been intense but worth the while. “We’ve been having two sessions a day so it’s really intense but it’s all down to ensuring we’re physically ready for the match. Hopefully by mid next week we’ll be a bit more settled and focusing on game specific preparations,” Mascall said.

“I think we’re all really excited about playing before a large home crowd. We want that 12th warrior behind us. We would have liked to have qualified out of the CONCACAF stage but this opportunity to do it at home is really a great opportunity for us,” added Mascall.

No Caribbean team has ever qualified for a FIFA women’s competition.

The TTFA on Friday launched an official T-Shirt campaign in support of the women’s Soca Warriors for the December 2 “Winner Takes All” encounter. The shirts are available at all Fan Club Outlets-- Movietowne Port of Spain, Trincity and Gulf City Mall, and Heritage Sports in Scarborough, Tobago. They cost $150 (adults) and $120 (children).

I hope TNTWNT don't make the same mistakes other tnt teams have made in the past and that's celebrating before the result. Can we safely say it's sort of a tnt tradtion to do this?? Let's not forget the lessons we have learnt as a footballing country. That said, for me the most important thing here is that those girls play their game and represent tnt is the best possibly way they can, if they do that we can't ask for anything more.

I feel they should be confident going into the games. I too feel that they should be weary of the past, but they must be ready mentally for this game. Unlike the Italy debacle, this team is staying downtown POS and training at the HCS. So there will be no repeat of a long drive to the stadium which caused mentally fatigue with Gally's team.

Women Warriors receive $1.5m today.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Senior women’s national team players, coaching and management staff will today receive a total of $1.5 million in Cabinet-approved funds for their participation at last month’s Concacaf Women’s Championship in the USA.

According to a media release from the Ministry of Sport, each person will receive the $50,000 grant from Minister of Sport, Dr Rupert Griffith at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s, at 1 pm. The original announcement of the incentive was made during the Concacaf Championship.

At the Concacaf Championship, the “Women’s Soca Warriors” finished fourth after narrowly losing the third-place playoff to Mexico, which earned the team a two-legged intercontinental playoff against Ecuador for next year’s Fifa Women’s World Cup, in Canada.

T&T already played the away leg at the high-altitude city of Quito, Ecuador, where they played to a commendable goalless draw.

The second leg will take place on December 2, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, from 6 pm.

Tickets for the match have been selling like “hot bread”, according to Tyrone Alexander, manager of The Fan Club, one of outlets where tickets are available.

Alexander said fans have been lapping up tickets at The Fan Club’s three outlets in MovieTowne, Gulf City and Trincity.

He said there was also a big demand for the Warriors 12th man T-shirts which went on sale yesterday in the three stores. “It seems like all of T&T will be supporting these women, both by being there on Tuesday, and wearing the official T-shirts. There is a huge rush to get these items.”

He said there was also a big demand for the Warriors 12th man T-shirts which went on sale yesterday in the three stores. “It seems like all of T&T will be supporting these women, both by being there on Tuesday, and wearing the official T-shirts. There is a huge rush to get these items.”

Trinidad and Tobago: Against All Odds
By Hal Kaiser (orangeintheoven.com)

One game is all that stands between the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s National Team and an improbable spot in the 2015 Women’s World Cup. A victory on December 2nd in Port of Spain would make the country the first Caribbean nation to ever qualify for the Women’s World Cup. For a group that is generally underfunded, reaching the World Cup would mark an amazing achievement when so often survival has been the order of the day.

Survive is exactly what the team, which has earned the shift in nickname from Soca Princesses to Soca Warriors, did in the first leg of their World Cup playoff against Ecuador on November 8th in Quito. Playing at an altitude of 9,127 feet, the Trinidadian side fought, clawed and gasped its way to a 0-0 draw, a result that was pleasing for head coach Randy Waldrum. “It was a really good result for us. I’m really proud of the group. To go in there and now have a chance to go back and play again at home will be a really exciting game on the 2nd.”

The impact of the high altitude was fully felt by the team, however, with two players having to be taken to the hospital after the game with altitude sickness; one coming off at the end of the game while the other collapsed in the locker room afterwards.

“In South Bend, you play in the snow and the cold, and you know I’ve played in extreme heat before. I don’t think I can ever think of a condition that is more difficult than the altitude there. It was unbelievable. I was telling some people back home that when I would literally step off the bench to walk out on the track to go try and yell some instructions to the field; you’d get light headed just in that walk. I can only imagine trying to play a game,” said Waldrum of the conditions.

Trinidad and Tobago spent seven days training in Mexico City ahead of the match in Quito preparing for the altitude. According to Waldrum, “I don’t think we would have made it had we not been able to go do that training. I’ve just never felt anything like it.”

The barriers that Trinidad and Tobago has overcome to reach this stage do not start with a game at altitude, however. The financial support and the facilities the team has had to work with are well documented. Less well documented are the other challenges the team has faced in preparing for its matches starting from the availability of players for training and going through its preparation matches ahead of World Cup qualifying.

Following the first leg of the playoff, the team went off in different directions – the college kids back to school and those who did not have club commitments back to Trinidad and Tobago to work with the strength coach on fitness. Waldrum returned to Houston for Houston Dash related business. He headed back down to T&T on November 24th for a training camp ahead of the second leg. The Thanksgiving holiday has meant the availability of the college kids to train with the full squad, the first time that has happened.

“We’ll have about 8 or 9 days to get ready. It will actually be the first time since I’ve had the team that we’ll have the entire team together for any kind of training. Every other camp we’ve never had the entire team. We’ve never had the college kids, the foreign based kids. It’s shocking, I mean here we are at the end and still with a chance and it will be the first time we have them together.”

The team has also lacked the resources to organize friendlies in preparation for qualifying unlike most of their competition. “Everybody else is playing Germany, France, Sweden and all the top teams and we’re playing the U-18 FC Dallas club team, U-16 boys team in Trinidad and an over 40 men’s team while we were there. That’s our preparation, I mean it’s just amazing that we are still in this thing at the end. I’m just blown away by it, seriously there has got to be a movie in there or something.”

The team is reportedly brimming with confidence. Waldrum notes that the team has believed all along that they are going to qualify, however the confidence has clearly grown from the opening game of the CONCACAF Championship when the team held the United States to just a 1-0 victory.

Against Ecuador, prior to the altitude wearing the team down, Trinidad and Tobago was clearly the better side. While Ecuador showed in the 1st half of that game that they can defend well, having the likes of Ahkeela Mollon and Kennya Cordner back at sea level where they can run all day in front of a supportive home crowd will cause Ecuador fits.

“It’s been amazing what they have accomplished with all the things that we’ve gone through with them and continue to go through,” says Waldrum. With a positive result on December 2nd, the Soca Warriors’ journey is just beginning.

Women’s success can lift T&T says Yorke.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Former Trinidad and Tobago captain Dwight Yorke would love for this country to grace the centre stage at the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Yorke who led T&T as captain to the 1991 Fifa Under 20 World Cup in Portugal and the 2006 Fifa World Cup Finals in Germany, believes a victory for the T&T women against Ecuador on Tuesday could be the ideal lift for the country at this time, particularly for women’s football.

“It would be a great achievement to get to the World Cup on the women’s stage,” Yorke said. “I was hearing all kinds of things about the team last month when they were in the Concacaf round and to see that they’ve gotten this far is a an accomplishment by itself. But they must keep focused and finish the job.

As captain I can tell you there’s no greater feeling that reaching the end and being able to celebrate victory or qualification like we did in 1991 and 2006. So good luck and hopefully there’s better things in store for the women’s game back home,” Yorke added.

The former Manchester United forward said he never forgets when November comes around, for obvious reasons.

“November 19 still stands out because I was a kid at the time and I knew what it felt like back in 1989 when we had the nation in a frenzy and then we didn’t make it. It was a sad day for me and all of us.

But winning in Bahrain and getting us to the World Cup in Germany is top of the list for me. Nothing can beat that if you ask me and I still remain immensely proud of what me and my teammates were able to achieve and the way we represented in Germany.

I’ve seen the guys have made it to the Gold Cup and they came in second in the Caribbean Cup so it’s a good sign. Hopefully we can continue improving and get ourselves ready for the next qualification and for the future in general,” he added.

Walker: It’s all or nothing.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Youthful T&T senior women’s team midfielder Anique Walker might appear to be small in stature but she is a tower of strength on the football pitch.

Walker is in the T&T squad for Tuesday’s crucial World Cup Qualifier against Ecuador at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. The former captain of the Under 20 team which narrowly missed on Under 20 World Cup qualification in January, the University of West Florida says it’s make or break time for the Women Soca Warriors.

“This all we’ve worked for in our careers to date. It’s all or nothing time for all of us in this team,” Walker said prior to training on Tuesday as she and her teammates spent some down time at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port-of-Spain.

“It’s been a great experience to be part of the senior team. I’m just focused on training hard and concentrating on how I can contribute to the team in any way.

“We have the 12th man and we’re on our turf now so hopefully we can pull it off. We are all eager to work hard and go out there and get the result that will take us through to the World Cup next year.

Walker is also a former National Under 17 team captain and appeared at the 2010 Fifa Under 17 Women’s World Cup in T&T.

Phillips enjoying stint with Women.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

He’s been through it all, from being one of the all time standouts as a goalkeeper for T&T to serving as technical director when T&T qualified for the World Cup in 2006. Now 73, Lincoln ‘Tiger’ Phillips is back as the goalkeeping coach for the Women’s team.

Phillips is with the team as it prepares for Tuesday’s qualifying match. He has been working with goalkeepers Kimika Forbes and Tenesha Palmer since the Concacaf Championship a few weeks ago.

Phillips has been highly noted for taking Howard University team built around students from the Caribbean to unprecedented success. In 1971, Howard became the first historically black college to win the N.C.A.A. Division I championship in the United States which to this day is highlighted in US Soccer history.

Now he’s on the verge of being part of another piece of history as the T&T Women’s team seeks to become the first Caribbean country to qualify for a Women’s World Cup.

“To be honest I was just as much surprised to be involved as many people were. I was back in the US working with the University of Loyola Women’s Team for the past three years and then Randy got in touch with me and said to come give him a hand. I was very happy to respond and get back involved to give back in any way because T&T has given me a lot, “ Phillips said.

Looking ahead to the match, he added: “Football is a game you can never forecast but I’m really looking forward to it because I think once we stick to our game and settle down then we can pull it off.”

He also touched on the potential of Forbes and Palmer. “Kimika has the potential and the qualities to become a world class goalkeeper. She works hard and is in a good system in the US. She has the physical features of a good goalkeeper and she’s improving all the time. Tenesha is young and growing with every bit of experience and she will continue to get better so I’m quite pleased about these two,” he added.

Women Warriors, coach receive their $$.
T&T Express Reports.

The Trinidad and Tobago women’s senior football team, including the technical staff, were handed cheques to the value of $1.5 million yesterday at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s, a promised one-off incentive payment for their performance at the CONCACAF World Women’s Championship (World Cup qualifying) tournament in the USA last month.

As she did with the male Soca Warriors last week, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar once again presided over the distribution of cheques to the players and staff that included T&T captain Maylee Attin-Johnson and head coach, US native Randy Waldrum, who initially drummed up financial support when the TTFA’s mis-communication and administrative bungling saw part of the female team travel to the Texas with only US$500.

The cheque hand-over was the delivery of a promise the Government made prior to their third-place play-off match in the CONCACAF tournament earlier this month. The Women Soca Warriors lost that match but earned a play-off spot in a two-leg tie with Ecuador.

The Waldrum-coached squad drew the first leg 0-0 in Quito on November 8 and need a win in the decisive second leg playoff next Tuesday in Port of Spain to qualify for the Canada 2015 Women’s World Cup. Another goalless draw would mean extra time and possible penalties while Ecuador would advance on a draw with goals.

Persad-Bissessar reminded the girls of the emotion and unity of the Strike Squad 25 years prior and urged them to zero in on the task. “You are one step away from creating history. You can become the first women’s team from T&T and in fact the Caribbean to qualify for the Women’s World Cup final.

‘’That is tremendous pressure knowing that you are not only fulfilling your own hopes and dreams but the hopes and dreams of a country and an entire region resting on your shoulders. Let not that pressure weigh you down, let that pressure lift you up so that you can go there and do your very best on Tuesday,” the PM said.

She continued: “You will be on show to the world in the Hasely Crawford Stadium. You are on the verge of making it. the country will be behind you as you seek to create history....I say to you, you must remain focused, just try to stay focused and do you best.”

Minister of Sport Dr Rupert Griffith said the girls had shown total sacrifice to reach this stage through “blood sweat and tears”.

“You have done us proud as a nation and we are looking forward with great anticipation when we win and we take our next step in our World Cup journey,” Griffith said. Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) general secretary Sheldon Phillips said the Government’s investment had paid off and looked forward to continued partnership with the Government after thanking the administration for their generosity.

Skipper Attin-Johnson expressed gratitude to the Government for their contribution and support. “Speaking for us, the team, we want to be appreciated and love and most importantly respected. We know we have inspired a lot of people and made a huge impact in the lives of people around the world....we know that the job is not finished. We haven’t accomplished our mission as yet....we will remain focussed.

‘’We will remain grounded in this game but I urge the people of T&T to come out and be the instrument in our orchestra. Come out and be the 12th warrior and be part of something magical, historical and epic. We will win come December 2,” she said.

Don’t let pressure get to you, says Kamla.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday urged the T&T Football Association (TTFA) to seek alternate revenue streams for the comfort of its player and for the development of football in this country.

Persad-Bissessar gave the feature address at a ceremony hosted at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s, where her Government handed over $1.5 million in $50,000 cheques to individual members of the T&T’s “Women Soca Warriors” and their supporting management and coaching staff.

The ceremony was attended by high ranking officials from the Ministry of Sport, the Sport Company, and the TTFA, in similar style to a function held at the Office of the Prime Minister, where the TTFA, along with national senior men’s footballers and staff received cheques totalling $9.964 million to clear a backlog of match fees, bonuses and salaries.

However, yesterday’s function was held to recognise and reward the Women Warriors’ outstanding performance at the Concacaf Women’s Championship, held in the USA, last month, where they placed fourth to earn an intercontinental Fifa Women’s World Cup playoff spot against Ecuador.

The team already played the first leg in Quito, Ecuador, earlier this month and earned a hard-fought goalless draw and are now preparing for the second leg, which will be hosted at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, on Tuesday.

In her address, Persad-Bissessar said she hoped “the TTFA can improve in its efforts to fund football,” before offering sentiments of encouragement to the footballers who are now five days away from the biggest match of their lives. “Don’t let the pressure get to you; Let it motivate you,” said Persad-Bissessar, who drew reference to the 1989 Strike Squad team, which narrowly lost out on qualification for the 1990 Fifa World Cup.

“Unlike them (Strike Squad), we need to win,” she said, reminding the team that a penalty shoot-out could go either way and that a draw would not suffice.

In response, captain of the team Maylee Attin Johnson thanked the Government for its acknowledgement of the team’s efforts, but added that “riches are not what matters. We do this for the love of the game,” Attin Johnson said.

“We know we have inspired and brought joy (to the nation), but the job is not done. (Regardless) we will be motivated… We will win come December 2!”

The players who were present were Attin Johnson, Tenisha Palmer, Ayanna Russell, Arin King, Khadisha Debesette, Lauryn Hutchinson, Patrice Superville, Khadidra Debesette, Mariah Shade, Dernelle Mascall, Tasha St Louis, Ahkeela Mollon and Kennya Cordner. The coaching and management staff members present were Vernetta Flanders, Michael Taylor, Lincoln Phillips, Peter Rampersad, Margaret Ottley and head coach Randy Waldrum.

Some US college-based players will be unable to receive their incentives because of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules. An Sports Company of T&T (SporTT) official indicated that the special-interest company is seeking ways for players to benefit from the incentives through legal means.

Yesterday tickets for the match continued to be sold at a furious pace, with several outlets having to call for more, while the exclusive 12th man T-shirt, printed in support of the team, and available at The Fan Club outlets in Movietowne, Trincity Mall, and Gulf City Mall, also met with great support.

Last Warrior arrives for WCup decider.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Starting goalkeeper Kimika Forbes was expected to arrive in Trinidad last night to complete the 22-player training squad currently preparing for Tuesday’s second leg World Cup qualifying fixture versus Ecuador.

Forbes follows her sister Karyn Forbes, along with Rhea Belgrave and Brianna Ryce, who arrived from the USA on Wednesday evening. They were permitted to train with the team given the Thanksgiving holiday.

The players are camping at Hyatt Regency, Wrightson Road, and are training at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The training squad largely represents the team which traveled to Ecuador earlier this month for the goalless first-leg, but also includes a couple of virtually unknown names in the likes of sisters Nia and Amira Walcott, who are uncapped for the senior team.

In 2010, they were both invited to train with the national U-17 women’s team, before T&T hosted the Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup, but failed to make the final squad. Back-up shot stopper, Tenisha Palmer, who was excluded from the squad for the first leg against Ecuador, was also left out of the training squad as she recovers from an injury.

She was replaced by Saundra Baron.

The training team comprises, Baron, Ryce, Belgrave, the Forbes (Kimika and Karyn), the Walcotts (Nia and Amera), Maylee Attin Johnson, Ayanna Russell, Patrice Superville, Ahkeela Mollon, Mariah Shade, Janine Francois, Arin King, Khadisha Debesette, Khadidra Debesette, Tasha St Louis, Anique Walker, Dernelle Mascall, Jasmine Sampson and Lauryn Hutchinson.

Meanwhile, Ecuador will touch down in Trinidad on Saturday, three days before the match.

The “Tricolor” will camp at the Courtyard at Marriott, Invader’s Bay, which is directly opposite the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the venue of Tuesday’s match.

For Ecuador to beat T&T to qualification for Canada, the South American nation will require a direct win, or any draw other than a nil-nil result, which will force extra-time and potentially penalties.

Ecuador’s head coach Vanessa Aráuz said, in the Ecuadorian press, her team will need to “build a fast game with an attacking mind set”, as opposed to playing for “luck that is accompanied with a draw.”

Waldrum to name 20-player squad today

The 22-member women’s senior national team currently in training for the second intercontinental Fifa Women’s World Cup qualification playoff home leg fixture will be trimmed to 20 players today. The final squad to face Ecuador on Tuesday will then be made public either tonight or tomorrow morning. Head coach Randy Waldrum confirmed this yesterday. The players were given a day off yesterday, ahead of today’s “shut down” when players will not be permitted visitors or allowed out of camp. The last player to touch down was starting goalkeeper Kimika Forbes, who arrived in T&T from the US on Thursday night. Her sister, Karyn, as well as Rhea Belgrave and Brianna Ryce all arrived a night before from the respective US colleges.

They are on a Thanksgiving break and will likely return to school on Wednesday. First team regular, Liana Hinds was unfortunately unable to make the trip because of final exams at the University of Connecticut, while back-up goalkeeper Tenisha Palmer is recovering with a leg injury. A few players have made their way in the squad, most notably in the form of uncapped midfield pair, sisters Nia and Amira Walcott, who were also welcomed to train with the national Under-17 team four years ago, but failed to make the final team for the Fifa Women’s Under- 17 World Cup, hosted here that year. Responding to queries on their inclusion, Waldrum suggested that they were invited following advice of his support staff. “As coach, I’ll always be looking at talent that can help our national teams,” he said, adding, “I have a great network of coaches around the world and in the USA as do our other staff coaches.” “It’s through recommendations, video, etcetera, that we find these players. That’s how these players came to be invited into camp,” Waldrum explained.

The players currently training at the Hasely Crawford Stadium are Baron, Ryce, Belgrave, the Forbes sisters (Kimika and Karyn), the Walcott sisters (Nia and Amira), Kennya Cordner, Maylee Attin Johnson, Ayanna Russell, Patrice Superville, Ahkeela Mollon, Mariah Shade, Janine Francois, Arin King, Khadisha Debesette, Khadidra Debesette, Tasha St Louis, Anique Walker, Dernelle Mascall, Jasmine Sampson and Lauryn Hutchinson. Meanwhile, on the opposite end, the Ecuador team is expected to arrive at Piarco International Airport today at approximately 4.30 pm. The South Americans will then make their way down to the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Invaders Bay, where they will camp for the duration of their stay. They will train at field outside of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, tomorrow, from 10 am, and again on Monday from 6 pm.

Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Ecuador may have somewhat of an advantage playing away from home on Tuesday, when the South American nation battles host T&T in the decider for Concacaf/Comnebol’s final representative at the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Randy Waldrum, head coach of T&T’s senior women’s team, said “They, just like us, will believe they have everything to play for and will fancy their chances.” These words echoed sentiments of his opposite number, Vanessa Arauz, who was less than impressed with Ecuador’s first leg goalless draw at home earlier this month.

Arauz, in a recent report in the Ecuadorian press, said her team was nervous and may have been overawed by the fan support in Quito but promised a much improved showing when Ecuador play away from home. “I think, being the first time we're in a playoff and playing in a stadium (which was) pretty full, (I) felt that the players went pretty nervous,” Arauz said. “Our goal was to go out with a score of 2-0 and give 100 percent. Corrections will be made. We went out with every expectation of winning. (It) was never our intention to settle for a negative result. In Port-of-Spain, (we will) give one hundred percent to bring the classification.”

In a recent interview, however, Arauz suggested that her team may adopt a conservative strategy on Tuesday as “going on the attack from the first minute,” may not be the ideal strategy. “We have to be very smart to not give away the spaces in our court. They are very fast and we can not let them play with freedom,” said Arauz.

Arauz, along with her technical staff and players, arrived at the Piarco International Airport, yesterday afternoon, and then made their way down to their camp at Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Invaders Bay, which is directly opposite to the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the venue for Tuesday’s match.

The team travelled with 22 players, but will cut the squad down to 20 players for the match.

The T&T team, meanwhile, trained at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, yesterday and will return today. Ahead of Tuesday, the most highly anticipated day in the history of women’s football locally, Waldrum said he has to prepare his team for a very testing encounter. “I think we’ve got to prepare ourselves for a very strong challenge from them on Tuesday,” Waldrum said. “They are maybe, under much less pressure being away from home and they will try to spoil our party.”

T&T will need to avoid conceding a goal. As the first leg ended goalless, Ecuador will qualify for the World Cup with any draw other than a goal-less result. If full time and extra time ends goalless, the match will be decided on a penalty shoot-out. An outright win by any score-line will see T&T advance. Waldrum was expected to name the final 20-player squad last night.

Lmfao.  Well I watched the players board their team bus this morning at about 10:45 am. They were all dressed like they were ready to practise. However I did not see which way the bus went. I walked back over to Hasley however they must've went to the double secret training location. They know the Soca Warriors are spying on them so they headed to the hills.  ;D

Not hearing anything about a pre-game tailgate party.  :bs: :cursing:

Ecuador women on pioneer mission.
By Garth Wattley (Express).

Vanessa Arauz is a petite 25-year old, who could easily be one of the 11 players who will be taking the field against Maylee Attin-Johnson and the Trinidad and Tobago women’s football team in tomorrow’s second leg World Cup qualifier at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

She is instead however, the counterpart of T&T coach Randy Waldrum.

Arauz, formerly in charge of Ecuador’s female Under-17 team, is the first woman to coach Ecuador’s senior national side. She is a pioneer already. But having only taken charge of the side in April, she and her charges will be aiming to make more history for their country with victory tomorrow.

A win or a 1-1 draw or higher would take the Ecuadorians to their first-ever Women’s World Cup; a feat their men have achieved three times.

The possibilities for the women’s game in her country does not escape the coach.

“It’s really important for the development of soccer because if we win the game, the children who want to play really have an excuse, because if one (Ecuador) team qualifies, I think if I prepare correct, I can one day go to a national team to represent,” she said, her halting English conveying the message in the lobby of the Marriott Courtyard hotel.

She adds for emphasis, “I think (it will) change a lot of views of people to say okay, the women can play soccer, it’s not only for boys.”

The Ecuador women are not accustomed playing in front of packed stadiums, but the significance of what this two-leg playoff against their Caribbean opponents can mean, has fired up public interest.

“In this year, it was the first time to have 20,000 people to watch the game Trinidad/Ecuador,” she says of the first leg 0-0 draw. “It is the first time in history. It was really a surprise for us.”

However, there is now heightened media interest back home and Arauz and her team left South America with many public offerings of support.

“It’s really important for all the team to know that we have that support,” the coach stresses.

Arauz’s players felt that added pressure in Quito. But in Port of Spain, she feels her side will be able to play more freely, despite the high stakes.

“I think for us it’s better because in Ecuador, the people say you have to win, you have to win. Here, the team is more relaxed...I don’t know if in Trinidad people go to the stadium and see the women’s team but I think it’s more pressure (for T&T).

The match will be between two teams of different styles. Waldrum’s is the stronger, more physical side, with potency added by “two players who are really quick,” according top coach Arauz. She was referring to Ahkeela Mollon and Kennya “Ya Ya” Cordner.

“We play with more creativity and short passes; that is I think the difference.”

The Ecuadoreans trained at the “very hot” Larry Gomes stadium yesterday morning. But despite coming from the their much cooler base in Quito, Arauz says, “the team feels happy and we will do good in the match.”

And despite all that she and her opposite number Waldrum may do by way of tactics on the bench, Ecuador’s coach feels her squad, the core of which have been in the setup since 2000, will succeed because of their desire.

“We fight a lot of time to reach this moment,” she says.

“They have to put their heart on the field and fight to the final and do everything.”

Final preparations
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior women’s football team head-coach Randy Waldrum is spending the time approaching tomorrow’s critical World Cup inter-continential playoff against Ecuador by making plans to take T&T to its first-ever qualification for a Women’s World Cup.

Trinidad and Tobago face the South Americans at 6 p.m. at Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain, following a 0-0 draw in Quito on November 7. The aggregate winner over two legs will earn the final spot in the 24-team 2015 Women’s World Cup to be played in Canada.

“From a coaches’ perspective, the staff will have a few details to finalise, such as what the starting eleven is going to be,” Waldrum said. “We’re not going to change a lot between today and Tuesday before the game,” Waldrum said. “We have to keep them tapered down a bit so that we can be fresh for Tuesday.

“Waldrum has already dropped his training sessions to one per day leading up to the big match and also gave the team last Friday off to be with family. He felt it important to keep them in the right frame of mind.

Speaking to the Trinidad Express after Saturday’s night training, Waldrum said: “We gave them yesterday off just to handle tickets and family. I don’t want it to be a burden. It can be a burden playing at home, and I don’t want that to be,” the experienced American coach said.

“We gave them yesterday off, said take care of your tickets, your family, get everything done. So, these next couple of days we can really focus on the game.”

Waldrum said that apart from football, a great part of preparing for the second leg was overcoming team fatigue. He brought in conditioning specialist Gregory Seales, who worked with American John De Witt to improve players conditioning for seven days after the return from Ecuador.

“We been going since CONCACAF. We didn’t have any breaks. We had Dallas (camp) before CONCACAF (Women’s Championships) and after that we had to go right to Mexico to prepare, then to Ecuador to prepare.”

Following the condition phase, Waldrum returned to the training field and believes the T&T women have done what was required to prepare for the game.

A time to be positive
By Fazeer Mohammed (T&T Express)

This is it, ladies.

After two near-misses, there’s no second, third or fourth chance after tomorrow evening’s showdown with Ecuador. It’s goalless from the first leg in Quito three weeks ago, so there’s everything to play for, not just for Trinidad and Tobago, but also for the Ecuadorians.

Make no mistake. The South Americans are here believing that this will also be their moment of glory, their chance to ruin the anticipated home celebrations and make it to next year’s Women’s World Cup finals in Canada as first-time participants, much in the same way that the hosts are seeking to become the first nation from the English-speaking Caribbean to reach the pinnacle of the female game.

Whether or not there is a full house at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, there will be nerves in the home camp. But it’s up to Maylee Attin-Johnson and her team to use that anxiety positively by staying focussed from first minute to last, whatever the situation. Momentary relaxation after taking the lead against Mexico in the third-place playoff of the CONCACAF tournament last month in the United States proved costly.

Even now, with a place in the finals so close, so many of us are still slow to buy into the significance of the occasion, dismissing it as “only” women’s football. We are bandwagonnists by nature though, so expect a bit of fervour, a bit of passion from people who hardly knew anything about the trials and tribulations of the team in getting to this stage where they are in with a better-than-even chance of filling the 24th and final spot for the finals.

Coach Randy Waldrum has acknowledged that playing at home will be tricky. A home crowd in excess of 15,000 will be unprecedented in women’s football in this country. Will the national players feel the sudden weight of expectation from countrymen and women who previously didn’t seem to even know that they existed? Will the roar and groans of thousands of voices be a boost or a burden?

Obviously a lot will depend on how the game unfolds. A win for either side clinches qualification, full stop, but a scoring draw (1-1, 2-2, etc) will earn the Ecuadorians a ticket to Canada by virtue of the scoreless stalemate in the first leg. So will they go for the early strike, knowing that it will put pressure on the hosts to score at least twice, or keep Trinidad and Tobago goalless and frustrated deep into the game while looking for the late item that will clinch the tie?

As we saw in the first game where they came on as second half substitutes seeking to take advantage of a tiring T&T team in the draining and disorienting altitude of the Ecuadorean capital, the nippy striking pair of Monica Quinteros and Elizabeth Caicedo are likely to pose the greatest threat to a defence that has been heavily reliant on the excellent Kimika Forbes in goal throughout this qualifying campaign.

There is talent and experience up front for the home side as well in the personalities of Kennya Cordner and Ahkeela Mollon, so an intriguing duel is in the offing. At the end of the day though, the team that prevails will more than likely be the one that is driven by the greatest desire from within.

In that sense, Trinidad and Tobago may appear to have overcome more hurdles (including being left stranded briefly in Dallas ahead of the CONCACAF tournament) in reaching this far. But the Ecuadoreans have also shown character on the pitch, rallying from a 1-2 halftime deficit to defeat Argentina 3-2 in the critical third-place playoff of South American qualifying to get to this decisive two-match duel with the red, white and black.

I suppose for us ordinary citizens who will never be called upon to deliver for an expectant nation, it is difficult to understand how anyone can stay calm and focussed ahead of such a big occasion. So maybe perspective is important at a time like this.

In a tearful tribute to his fallen teammate Phillip Hughes, Australian Test cricket captain Michael Clarke recalled on Friday how the ever-positive left-handed batsman would often say to his teammates: “Where else would you rather be boys, than playing cricket for your country?”

That’s a much better way to approach the challenge instead of being bogged down by supposed pressure and freezing up with anxiety and tension. It’s a privilege, it’s an honour to wear the national colours...and to be on the doorstep of history to boot.

So, where else would you rather be girls, than playing football for your country and taking us to the World Cup finals?

Let’s all go for goal
By Keith Subero (T&T Express)

Regrettably, the historic significance of tomorrow’s women’s football match between Trinidad and Tobago and Ecuador may slip by many Trinbagonians unnoticed.

A young shop attendant admitted unashamedly to me last week that she was not aware there was a FIFA women’s World Cup, “because of my studies at UWI”.

Neither was she aware that our Soca Princesses are scheduled to play their final game right here at the Hasely Crawford Stadium for a place in the World Cup finals in Canada.

“That match is of historic importance to T&T; it’s part of the journey of November 1989,” a member of The Strike Squad of 1989 told me last week.

“It is one of those moments in time. It is not just 11 girls playing a game, but as the scoreboard says, ‘T&T’ … no, all 1.3 million of us in … ‘T&T versus Ecuador’. Moments in this game will stay with everyone of us in the years to come.”

I was touched by his summation because, like him, I recognise that success tomorrow could be that hoped-for bright spot which could change the current mood of this young nation.

As we spoke my head went to another place. I was recalling the words of the great CLR James: “There is no nation, unless the citizens feel the need for self-defence.”

And that is what is required of every citizen tomorrow: first, positive expressions of our national character, then all forms of collective action demonstrating that we are all bound together in support of our Soca Princesses.

In other words, a transformation of our differences into an emotional, national hand-holding experience that says, “We are all Trinbagonians in defence of our nation”.

We all need that bright spot right now. This fractured society is in urgent need of any experience that will help us remember, acknowledge and celebrate those positives in our national character.

Let’s admit it. Recent events across the national landscape have been bleak, unpleasant, and often ugly. In brief, falling oil prices, in spite of the Finance Minister’s assurances, could mean government projects, now under construction, may have no future, and worse, those falling prices could mean reductions in social welfare expenditure; Petrotrin and T&TEC, because of mismanagement, now stand near bankruptcy; Manzanilla is a disaster area; brutal murders in Brasso Seco and Tobago; the Prime Minister’s indifference to Dr Wayne Kublalsingh’s hunger strike; questions surrounding the Curepe interchange – all these form part of a perception of government corruption, incompetence, gimmickry, and arrogance.

Among the population, such events have created pockets of cynicism, feelings of powerlessness, suspicion, distrust, and alienation which seem to be taking us down a sad path towards an anomic state.

So what the Soca Princesses need tomorrow is the whole of Trinidad and Tobago sending them positive vibes throughout the day. They do not need mere spectators in the stadium – but supporters to transform its atmosphere, backing them throughout the full 90 minutes, or as the promotion says, supporters who re-create themselves into the 12th Soca Princess on Team T&T.

My Strike Squad friend said: “Many do not realise that in 1989 the crowd was not alive, or with us. Under pressure, there was an eerie silence, no vocal support. In boxing, a boxer, under pressure, gets inspiration from the persons in his corner, and that’s what the girls need tomorrow – T&T’s full support, throughout the match.”

The moment demands the supportive intensity we demonstrated in the past. We were behind our Olympic, and then world-record breaking track team in the 1960s; we gave national support to Hasely Crawford in 1976; we were behind our netball girls in 1979, urging them on to become joint world champions; we continue to salute Brian Lara for his many cricketing achievements; and we still talk about our male football team’s experiences in Bahrain and Germany in 2005 and 2006 respectively.

The Strike Squad member said: “In Latin America, supporters give a distinctive hum throughout the match. Playing in Mexico, the T&T team felt challenged, at every moment, by a stadium of 100,000 Mexican supporters. That’s the support our girls need.”

CLR, I am sure, would have said that, just like cricket, our Soca Princesses’ football match tomorrow may go beyond the boundary…throughout T&T.

Last pair take aim at history
FIFA.com

After the biggest FIFA Women’s World Cup™ qualifying campaign in history - 129 nations playing over 400 qualifiers - there are just 90 minutes remaining until the final composition of the 24-nation field for Canada 2015 is known. Trinidad & Tobago host Ecuador in an intercontinental play-off with both nations seeking maiden qualification to the global stage. The tie sits on a knife-edge after the pair played out a tense scoreless draw in Quito in early November. For the players, at stake is not only qualification to Canada 2015, but the chance to write their names in the nation’s football history, and perhaps even help kick-start women’s football in their respective homelands.

The match
Trinidad & Tobago – Ecuador, Port of Spain, 2 December, 18:00 (local time)
The Hasely Crawford Stadium in the Trinidad capital has witnessed many famous events, including two FIFA youth World Cup finals, and, perhaps most memorably in the eyes of locals fans, a leg of the FIFA World Cup intercontinental play-off which saw Trinidad & Tobago famously qualify for Germany 2006. Now the same history-making opportunity awaits the Soca Princesses. T&T, under the guidance of highly-experienced American coach Randy Waldrum, elected to focus on local camp preparation with a largely U-21 team attending last week’s Central American and Caribbean Games. Prior to the opening leg in Quito, the Soca Princesses had been battle hardened thanks to five tough games at October’s CONCACAF Championship, which doubled as Canada 2015 qualifiers.

Though T&T may have the edge heading into the contest, Ecuador know that a single away goal could change the complexion of the tie in an instant. Already they have proven their resilience to reach this stage. They rescued their CONMEBOL campaign in the final outing of an exhausting seven-match campaign by coming from the brink of defeat at two goals down against Argentina to win 3-2 and advance to the play-off. So far, Ecuador have played all their qualifiers on home soil, including that tense opening leg last month in front of an impressive crowd in the Ecuadorian capital. How Vanessa Arauz’s side adapt to playing in foreign territory will go a long way to determining the 24th and final team to earn a ticket to Canada.

The stat
3
– The number of South American nations to have previously featured at a FIFA Women’s World Cup; Brazil, Argentina and Colombia.

Players to watch
Pacy Kennya Cordner is arguably the jewel in the T&T crown. Lithe and elusive, the free-running forward or wide midfielder was the only T&T player named in the CONCACAF Championship all-star team alongside a host of big-name USA players. The 26-year-old has a rare level of experience among those in the Soca Princesses’ ranks having played in England Sweden, Australia and in the US for top NWSL outfit Seattle Reign.

Influential forward Andrea Pesantes is recognised as one of the driving forces in the Ecuador team. One of the first picked by coach Arauz, Pesantes is a technically gifted player who has played in defence and midfield during her career, but is now a settled member of the forward line. “I have the energy to lift the team and push it to victory,” she says.

The words
“I think we’ve got to prepare ourselves for a very strong challenge from them. They are maybe under much less pressure being away from home and they will try to spoil our party,” Trinidad & Tobago coach Randy Waldrum.

"The girls have understood the game situations that may arise, there is a lot of responsibility on their shoulders but the group is committed to achieving this goal," Ecuador coach Vanessa Arauz.

Waldrum to name T&T squad today
Trinidad Guardian Reports

The 20 players selected for the “Women Soca Warriors” squad to face Ecuador tomorrow, will be announced publicly this morning, a day before the all important second leg Fifa Women’s World Cup qualifier.

The squad was originally expected to be announced some time between Friday night and Saturday morning, but this was delayed to allow assistant coaches, Ben Waldrum and John Dewitt a further look at the squad. Both arrived in the country on Saturday night.

The 22 players, who were named to train for the fixture over a week ago, conducted their final preparation session at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, yesterday. The T&T players, along with the Ecuador team returns to the match venue today for one hour each, as stipulated by Fifa.

Ecuador’s players and technical staff members arrived in Trinidad on Saturday afternoon. Both will attempt to seal their first ever qualification for the Fifa Women’s World Cup. The first leg finished goalless early last month in Quito, setting up a second leg thriller in Port-of-Spain.

Due to the away goal rule, Ecuador will advance with a win or a draw by any result, apart from a goalless one. On the other end, T&T will need to win in regulation time, extra time, or on a penalty shoot-out, if the match again ends goalless.

Ecuador arrived in T&T on Saturday and enjoyed two training sessions. Ecuador captain Ligia Moreira said the team approach would be to try to manage the game and control the ball, “because we know that they will go with everything to attack”.

The first leg in Quito, Ecuador, which ended goalless meant T&T would have to score in Port-of-Spain in order to qualify for Canada, but any draw other than a goalless result or a win for Ecuador, would put the South Americans through to their inaugural appearance on the big stage.

“We have analyzed all possible scenarios and one of them is criminal, the end of the game and 0-0 overtime,” said Vanessa Arauz, Ecuadorian coach, who insisted that her team must remain calm, but capitalise on all opportunities to score. She has mentioned, that set pieces and penalties can be crucial to the fixture and has put particular emphasis on such plays.

“We know the physical potential they have,” she cautioned.

Tickets still available
According to TTFA director of communications, Shaun Fuentes, between 12,000-14,000 tickets have been purchased. Some venues have sold out since tickets went on sale, last week, but have been replenished. They are priced at $100 (uncovered) and $200 (covered). Children under the age of 12 are free but must walk with a ticket which is available at Kenny’s Sports Centre and The Fan Club. Two can be claimed with the purchase of one adult ticket. Tickets are also available at All Out Restaurant, Heritage Sports in Scarborough, Ramsingh’s in Couva, Econo Supermarket in Sangre Grande and the Southern Football Association in Skinner Park, San Fernando.

My wife and I were just over at movie towns the fan club buying woman warrior tee shirts and were advised they have no more tickets left at their location. They are telling all callers what the TTFA told them that the remaining tickets will go on sale at the stadium at 10 am tomorrow morning. I can't speak for any other location that may have tickets.
Thank god I have mine already  ;D
I will be the covered section with my Red Jersey on and my face painted with my favourite warrior number 5 on my cheek and the flag painted on the other. Will be displaying the Trinidad scarf proud as I have through-out every Concacaf qualifying game.
History will be made tomorrow my friends.

Hope to see you all their cheering loud and proud  :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

Have a good feeling about this game. Ecuador will play counter attack and if they score first, park the airplane & bus
Yaya & Mollen both will score for sure.

The players currently training at the Hasely Crawford Meanwhile, on the opposite end, the Ecuador team is expected to arrive at Piarco International Airport today at approximately 4.30 pm.The South Americans will then make their way down to the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Invaders Bay, where they will camp for the duration of their stay. They will train at field outside of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, tomorrow, from 10 am, and again on Monday from 6 pm.

Damn Mobile device. Wont allow me to copy/ quote  :banginghead:

Took a walk over to Hasley.  Saw the Ecaudorians boarding their bus however they did not come to Hasley  :frustrated:

Wheres our intelligence officer  ::)

Well got some nice exercise. Time for an ale or three :beermug:

Tuesday cant come soon enough.

Cheers. 19

19 yuh have some contradictory info in there. Yuh sure yuh didn't have dem 3 ales prior to posting?  ;D

They arrived yesterday. Their advance personnel arrived the day before. By now they should have already trained for the day based on their itinerary.

Cheers.

So! ... apparently there's a story here. The federation "someone" screwed up the arrangements for Ecuador's training session yesterday. Instead of taking the team to the Hasely ... the squad was taken about an hour away ... wherever Madame Prime Minister was distributing Christmas gifts to kids, and they ended up with a practice session that lasted only 30 minutes and a couple players were injured because the facility was of poor quality. The Ecuadorans were ... and are ... less than happy/very angry/upset about the entire runnings that went down.

In Ecuador our players trained on the grounds of Barcelona, Emelec and at the national stadium ... 3 fine facilities ... and our WNT players can attest that the hospitality received in Ecuador was of a high standard. It's a shame we have been less than diligent in reciprocating.

This is only the tip of the iceberg.

They could have asked Fatima, Saints or QRC to use their grounds for practicing. I think they should  have had access to HCS.

We Ready
Trinidad Express Reports

Women Warriors in last-ditch bid to make World Cup

“We’re ready,” stated Randy Waldrum, Trinidad and Tobago’s senior women’s team head-coach. Waldrum assured that the Women Warriors are as ready as could be for today’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Ecuador.

Both teams will be hoping for a historic first-ever World Cup qualification when they play the second-leg of an inter-continental playoff for the final spot in the 24-team 2015 Women’s World Cup to be held in Canada.

The teams played to a goalless draw in the first-leg on November 8 in Quito, Ecuador. Today, they clash from 6 p.m. at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain, with the aggregate winners over the two matches clinching the final spot for the Women’s World Cup.

“We’re kind of at that point where we are just anxious to get into it,” Waldrum said of today’s match. Undoubtedly the biggest women’s football match in T&T’s history,” said the former USA women’s under-23 coach.

Waldrum says that nothing less than a win would do, as the Women Warriors attempt to emulate the 2006 men, as the only senior national football team to qualify for a FIFA World Cup tournament.

“We have to expect a win. We want a victory. Anything short of that will be a disappointment for everybody involved,” Waldrum declared. “But even so, this team has done extremely, extremely well.”

“Because of how the first stage tied 0-0, I think you’ll see a game that will be fairly open,” said Waldrum. “A tie with goals scored works for them, but a tie with no goals scored, and we still have to play more.

“If they had won by multiple goals, they could come and sit in a bit. So, I think you’ll see them try to go get the game, and I think you will see from us, obviously, try to go get the win,” Waldrum added. “I think you will see both teams be smart about going and feeling each other out a bit early on. But, I don’t think you’ll see either team really sitting back.”

Total support for Women Warriors in final bid for World Cup glory
Trinidad Guardian Reports

This country’s senior women’s footballers will have the backing of over 22,500 spectators at a sold-out Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain from 6 pm this evening when they meet Ecuador, as both teams attempt to qualify for next year’s Fifa Women’s World Cup.

The vast majority of tickets have already been sold out, yet fans are expected to flock to the venue from early hours today in a last-ditch attempt to salvage an experience similar to that of the men’s team when it met Bahrain in 2005 and the USA in 1989.

The women’s team has very similar ambitions, as they are aiming to qualify for their first ever Fifa Women’s World Cup.

T&T has never reached this close, and according to head coach Randy Waldrum, there has never been a better opportunity to qualify.

A win today will see T&T join World Cup host Canada, along with the USA, Costa Rica and Mexico for a record number of representatives from Concacaf. T&T too, will become the smallest country by population, behind Equatorial Guinea, to qualify for World Cup with a win.

Today will see a battle of tactics between Waldrum and his counterpart Vanessa Arauz and on the field between Warriors captain Maylee Attin Johnson and her opposite number Ligia Moreira.

The variables that define the fixture are straightforward. T&T’s Women Soca Warriors must avoid a loss. A goalless draw after full time and extra time will see the match decided on a penalty shoot-out, while a win or a draw by any result other than a goalless one, will see Ecuador through.

These scenarios were constructed as a result of the goalless draw in the first leg in Quito, Ecuador, early last month.

The “away goal rule” gives goals from away teams more strength than those scored by the home team, but only in the case where both teams are tied after both legs. Given that the first match ended without any goals, Ecuador will advance to the World Cup if the match ends 1-1 or 2-2 and so forth.

Both teams returned to the venue yesterday for successive one-hour training sessions.

Kennya Cordner is expected to start up front and will likely have the support of Mariah Shade and winger Akheela Mollon, with Johnson holding.

Possible line-ups:

T&T: Kimika Forbes; Brianna Ryce, Rhea Belgrave, Arin King, Lauren Hutchinson, Kadhidra Debessette, Maylee Attin Johnson, Karyn Forbes, Ahkeela Mollon, Mariah Shade, Kennya Cordner.

Ecuador: Shirley Berruz, Ingrid Rodriguez, Lorena Aguilar, Ligia Moreira, Angie Ponce, Mayra Olvera, Andrea Pesantes, Erika Vasquez, Kerly Real, Ambar Torres, Monica Quinteros.

…In a river of Greats: T&T’s First Women’s World Cup
By Bianca Alice Walker (aboutabeing.wordpress.com)

If you are a Trinbagonian in Trinidad right now I urge you to stop everything you are doing and read this…

The dust gathers and swirls over a Maracas Valley pitch and winds its way through the magnificently-shaped legs of Kenya ‘Yaya’ Cordner as she moves from one end of the field to the next before anyone on the field could begin to react. Relentless in her pursuit of the ball, no stone or pothole on a field or road in Speyside, Tobago, stopped her from guiding the ball through the legs of countless hard-back fellas, no insult or belittlement could break through her tough skin and fortified stare into the deep corners of the goal where she places many a ball, no Saucy Wow or Destra could get on their head and move their waist so acrobatically as Yaya, no female footballer I have played with has ever made me believe so much that every bone in her body was fashioned by God for the beautiful game of football, that she was made for this day — Tuesday 2nd December 2014 — when T&T will qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in history.

I urge you, if you need one reason to go to the Ecuador vs T&T game tonight it is to witness the finesse, the entertainment and the breathtaking speed of this Tobagonian girl.

And that’s just one reason.

There’s also Ahkeela Mollon who grew up in such dire circumstances that she had to kick around a coconut as a child. But thank goodness she did because every time her foot touches the ball you see and feel the boundless appreciation and love she has for that blessed touch. You’ll see it in her carefully crafted crosses into the box and in the way the ball seems to stick to her feet as she dribbles down the line, wanting to stay near her because she takes care of it. When you see her fly past the wing back, her rass arching from the gale force winds created by her high-speed sprinting, picture the ball as a coconut and you’ll grasp the full force of her story. Never tell Ahkeela Mollon she can’t do anything! Ahkeela Mollon, 20-something years after she kicked her first coconut is going to the FIFA Women’s World Cup and you want to be there to witness it.

If you aren’t convinced enough then here’s a question: what is the greatest thing about life? Is it not being able to celebrate and experience triumph that comes after long-suffering, years of commitment despite dire odds, and unflinching determination through every loss, every no, every empty stadium, every corrupted decision, every bit of gender bias, every thing in your being telling you to just give up? Isn’t that the essence of life?

Well you need to go to this game today (Tuesday 2nd December) and be a part of this 90 minutes in which the essence of life will display itself in its utmost splendour — where every Trinbagonian in the stand will forget about developing country this, political corruption that, small island mentality this, segregation that, and feel TRIUMPHANT. Because we deserve to feel that way.

Yaya and Ahkeela are just two players. I know about half the team well because I played with them on the U20 team for four years. They have been playing with the national team since they were 12 and younger. They are best friends. They are the real stars. Forget your Chelseas, Man Uniteds, Real Madrids and the likes that buy in players to make all-star squads. These girls have been playing for over 10 years for T&T.

I witnessed Ayanna Russell push through severe iron deficiency to compete in international games years ago. No deficiency of any kind would stop Ayanna from being one of the fittest on the team, one of the fittest female players I have ever played with. Growing up behind the old Piarco International Airport, in the villages where only stories of Douens and Soucouyants are noteworthy enough to reach beyond its borders, no one would have guessed that Ayanna would be jet-setting on those low-flying planes that formed the base beat of their hearts, to play Division One soccer in the US and to earn scores of caps for T&T over the years.

I met Kimika Forbes and Karen ‘Baby’ Forbes at the same time I met Yaya, and it changed my view of Tobagonians forever. Spend a day in their presence and you’ll wonder what language Tobagonians speak. You’ll also be in awe of Baby’s Beckham-like free kicks and through-balls and the world has already witnessed Kimika’s phenomenal goalkeeping abilities. Go TOBAGO!!!

Maylee Attin Johnson — she’s been demanding the ball since she could speak and it’s always listened. T&T could not have a better captain whose footballing skills rival any female footballer in the world and whose confidence will make you envious. I haven’t had the privilege of playing with her that often but she commands such respect on the field and you need to be there to witness the vast wisdom with which she plays and get in some ‘ooos’ and ‘aaaahs’ as she nips past 1, 2, 3, 4 Ecuadorians like she’s moving a pawn over a chess board.

These are still only a few members of the team. I could go on all day about the other members that I have played with who will be wearing our national colours tomorrow. The point is that I am in London wishing with all my might that I could be there to witness such a triumph, that I could experience again the thrill and the rush of the packed Hasely Crawford Stadiums of 10 years ago when the Men’s National Team were on fire and long-standing players like Yorke, Latapy, John and Hislop etched their names onto our red-and-white-painted hearts. I would do anything to feel that feeling again, to watch such a triumph again, to see the fruits of talent, determination, long-term commitment and, most essentially, the support of a full stadium and an entire country.

Our first failure would be not filling that stadium. So if you don’t have a ticket then make sure you do everything you can to get one. When I laid on the cool rocks of the clear-watered Maracas Valley river after our intense training sessions so many years ago, next to Yaya, Ayanna, Kimika and others, I knew I was in the company of greats, the Ronaldinhos and Messis and Marthas of Trinidad and Tobago. Today we need to all be there to cheer them on.

Let’s give it all we got T&T!!! Fill that stadium.

Win that game. FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 here we come.

Nice vibes Warriors. Cherish these moments.
For the lady warriors: We're behind you 100% and will feel every turn of the emotional rollercoaster tonight.
For the 12th men in the stands and on-line and in front of their TVs: Remember that being an effective 12th man/woman is about giving unconditional support even when things look scary and, God forbid, we fall behind in the 89th minute or in extra time. Cheer when we are ahead to finish off the opposition (as we expect to do today) and also cheer your team when they are behind due to an unlucky deflection into our goal. Our collective pysche has to be stronger than theirs to make them (Ecuador) crack first.
Warrior ladies, all the best. You are not alone. You have made us proud no matter the result.
May T&T be collectively mature enough (including Sam) to handle the carnage during, ... and the spoils after this war.
God bless.

Good job by the TTFA, despite all the criticism they got over the tickets.  Great job however, by the TnT public... way to set side doubts about the FA and get out and get behind the ladies  :beermug:

Yeah, no chance to even equalize and then give ourselves a chance to win the game.

I am feeling it for the ladeis right now, hope they can all pick themselves up after this massive dissappointment as we need them to keep improving and lead an even stronger campaign to qualify in 2019.

Game is being re-played right now on C-TV for those who can stand the pain of watching it again or who missed it when it was live. http://video.ctntworld.com/stream.html

But, despite the disappointment, I am very, very proud of these women. I pray to God that they are left in the wilderness of football mayhem. The next goal should be hopefully PanAm games and Rio Olimpics. They may use the WC as Olimpic qualifiers. So I am not sure.  This is bittersweet.

November 19th all over again. My heart breaks for the players and the coaching staff. I won't critique any decisions made by the coach or players on the field. When you play a game like this...all bets are off. However...I find myself thinking back to the female warriors going to the Concacaf women's championships with $500 dollars. That one incident is a real reflection of how the "powers that be" treat not only football but sports in general in this country. And then after all the struggle, the fight and the blood, sweat and tears the athletes give... "they" jump in at the end with some "presents" to save face and make themselves look good. Success doesn't just happen. Sure, the team worked hard, were determined and had belief in themselves, but they were never given the best chance to succeed being given the support, financial and otherwise, that our rich with natural gas country could provide. Same old story, same sad result. I'm sorry these ladies, are not appreciated as they should be.

The ladies played very well but just couldn't finish. Ecuador played smart.

Mollon was the only player pulling stones, she give away a lot of balls and did not make to many good passes and she does over dribble sometimes and make good runs but then waste de final ball. She shoulda been sub.

Our goalkeeper could have saved that.

Shade came on and did good, better replacement for Tasha.

De team played they best game so far, it just wasn't for them, this happens when you fail to make use of your opportunities.

Kennya Cordner run out of gas in de end.

Hard luck ladies, you did very well, hopefully, the team will be kept together.

Randy Waldrum is a good defensive coach, should be kept on, but should seek help to fix we attacking third.

Pity the team did not pay homage to the fans by doing something symbolic like a lap in their honor or at least applauding each side of the stadium. As deflated as they were, that could have gone a long way to encourage continued support ...

Yes!
Bossing the game early but not taking the opportunities when you have the advantage is a lesson many teams regret they had to learn for these games you don't get back.

It would be tragic if we don't ensure we capitalize on what they have shown we CAN do. Now to do it better is the challenge. They have guts so no doubt they will bounce back and start the fight again.

I real like how they conduct themselves and give them the edge over the men right now. Damn we had them!

Ah resolved not to comment about the actual game. Nonetheless, I think there's merit in a comment made by palos regarding player psychology on a different thread.

Respect for the game and the effort put in by the women kept me from exiting the stadium after that ball rippled the net. I wish I could say it wasn't predictable.

Watching Kimika struggle to walk after the final whistle blew was riveting ... and I mean her legs buckled. Her pain was evident. Palpable. However, there wasn't significant emotion from the spectators. Interesting to witness our ease in resignation.

Best wishes to the coaches, captain and players!

(Saw a junior NT baller after the game and asked him why play SSFL. He said it came down to playing time).

Was really hoping the coach would have sent them back out to honor the fans. I know it hard at that time, but they should of tried, I thing it would have solidify the connections with the fans.

Final observation on this game ... our fan culture is disconnected from the action on the field. It's all well and good to beat iron and chant 'we want a goal' and have a bunch a ppl having a good time while sipping on ah favored adult beverage ... I would like to see the fans urge the team on in context ... Be more than observers, be really a 12th man ... vocally urge on our players rather than to react to events on the field.

Hearing 'defense, defense, defense' etc. counts for something in other sports. Sometimes that helps players to keep a high level of application and concentration. A large segment of our fans have to learn to bleed with the team.

Another issue to be resolved is police/fire and crowd control. We too comfortable with ppl blocking areas of ingress and egress from seats to getting food or from seats to toilets or ppl jes standing aimlessly blocking pathways ... meanwhile police not on a coordinated front to keep a simple task simple ... Instead it is a battle.

Next, is either everybody siddung or everybody stand up ... it's ridiculous to have ppl standing up blocking seated patrons and the enforcement arm indifferent to enforcement.

Yes the loss was tough, disappointing and, I would even say unfair based on the flow of the game.....the girls gave it their all and you really can't ask for more than that.

But, after not qualifying directly despite having two opportunities, wasn't it really more hope than expectation for them to qualify at the third try? Football these days is more a mental game than anything else, and the longer the game was at 0-0 the more the team would have been under pressure mentally...clearly the girls were better physically and talent wise.

What I am really sad about is that T&T would have been a better team to have in the world cup. Ecuador gonna get real licks....smh

That said, Sam is spot on about Mollon. For a player with her experience she was poor. Over dribbling and bad passing.

So true. And to make things worse, every time Ecuador takes the field at the WC the commentators will no doubt remind us that they are there by virtue of beating T&T in the play-offs.  Nothing saddens me more than hearing my country's name at a world event that we aren't a part of   :'(

Anyway.....devastating loss for the women warriors ; so close but yet so far away. I hope they can pick themselves up and move on from here.

Someone posted earlier that the team is in danger of becoming stagnant now that the dream of WC qualification is dead. I may take some stick for saying this but ,as a long-time follower of the womens game, our team has been stagnant for quite some time. We have improved tremendously since the 90's when I started following them but we seem to have plateaued in the past 5 or so years. We beat up on the lesser teams in the region ( and rightly so) but for all our fight and resolve we fail to get past the traditional bigger names....I recall the 2011 qualifying campaign where we fought hard against Canada but lost 1-0, then fought hard against Mexico but also lost by a narrow margin (the same Mexico team that knocked the  USA out of the tournament and  forced them into a play-off with Italy). I thought for certain that this team would be a force to be reckoned with in the 2015 campaign, but 4 years later the script reads the same - and I dare say, had Canada not been given a free pass and were involved in the qualifiers, the script would have been much shorter ;we would not have been in contention for a play-off spot.
Heart, passion and warrior-resolve can only get us so far....we need something extra to get us over the final hurdle.
I'm no expert so I'll leave it to the relevant authorities to figure out what's lacking. But, come what may, I'll be supporting the team no matter what and hoping that we get it right sooner rather than later.

It bittersweet to say the least. To see the way the ladies went out attacking from the get go. Yes, the final third was the problem. Bad passes, over dribbling. But what can we say. This the first time our senior women's team have had such focus on them. Had they been giving the resources from the start of the qualification, they could have beaten CR in that quarterfinal. I honestly believe so. I will say again. I do hope the TTFA find some way to continue with this group. They need to play at a high level constantly to maintain their sharpness. I do hope there is a qualification for Olimpics. They can get a shot again in two years.

Fantastic effort by the girls. Some hard luck saw them fail to score. Many times, blocked shots flew away to safe areas where on other days the ball would have hit the net, hit a defenders hand or fell at the feet of our strikers.

Meanwhile, one moment of concentration lapse and Ecuador are through.

You gotta love football even when it hurts!!

Ecuador had a game plan (similar to the 06 MNT vs Sweden). They parked the bus and relied on speedy counters, but T&T had that covered. I thought the game was played at a very high pace, yet the girls seemed to have great stamina.

It was great to see the stadium packed, but frustrating that the crowd didn't seem to become involved in the game too much. The atmosphere should have been imposing - the 12th warrior - but it didn't feel so.

It was also great to see the sponsors come out with pitch side advertising and also on the TV coverage.

Same complaint about the TV coverage - we hardly ever saw a shot of the main stand. However, big props for using a boom camera!

All those comments from fan culture to people blocking the aisles and exits and lack of police action is societal issues.
Sorry to say I can't see any solutions coming from our present generation of leaders.

The issue I have with them is that these are issues that have long been occurring at the stadium. However, if we are serious about facility management and event management, we have to address them.

I doh think there was a major concern about ppl standing obstructing the view of others across much/most of the uncovered area, but where de Siparia Riddim Section was there was an issue, and although a fire official and a police officer made a token effort to geh ppl out of the aisles and to siddung, once dey moved on ... that was that.

There's a balance to be struck with fans and security ... so that fans enjoy deyself without feeling restricted but then, there's also a point of reasonable intervention.

Our law enforcement presence in the stands was minimal ... more riot gear personnel on de track doh. Some easy fixes, if ppl jes applied a different thought process. To go fuh a lil corn soup shouldn't involve so much obstruction.

I hope you realize that none of this is not actually what happened... the ladies are as supported at any of the other programs, lack of resources notwithstanding.  Very proud of the ladies.

Care to explain that?
Yes...let's here your explanation of the so called support yuh talking bout. Cause either you blind, don't live in Trinidad and Tobago or haven't been following the women's national team until that game on Tuesday.

' a time to celebrate a time to be inebriated a time to mourn a time to groan. Finally I have the impetus to sign in. Travelled back home and was at the game- met up with the Lady netballers I met in Calgary and was at their qualifying WC matches  .last night was a different tale with a different ending.
True in my opinion we started strong- attacking and controlling the play in the opposition end . Impressive runs by 19 and 12 KC and AM. However, my observations were:
1 our first touch and quickness to the ball was better than Ecuador however our second touches were suspect
2 our offensive penetration up the middle was a challenge - moving KC to the middle in the second half was not as effective
3 it appears to me that in the second half, our energy, our attack was not as consistent as the first- conditioning appeared to be a factor. 19 and 12 were not running at the defence as the first half-
4. Team support up front was negligent- still too much individual play.
5. FINISH FINISH- we needed better finishes.

In my opinion, a team ought to be progressively better after taking on the likes of the USA CR and Mex, I for one  was expecting not only a better result but to see a team that would be playing at a faster pace, and with more technical and tactical positional play. Ecuador is not in the same league as some of the teams we played, yet our offence struggled against that defender. Shots on goals were near misses and not dangerous enough to challenge the goalkeeper.
In my opinion, Ecuador withstood the storm of the first half and hence it was a morale victory for them conversely, we appeared deflated after coming away with zero for the effort- thus said the second half was a different story.
Our effort , spirit and passion were evident in the first half more so but objectively, the hustle . And intensity in the second half was waning.
I am still disappointed because it is like an opportunity lost or thrown away- not because Ecuador showed any quality as world beaters but because we allowed a slip up which was about the one of only
three real chances at goal that decided the game.

Is anyone worried about the psychological effect on the players after the game? For some of those players this was it, they most likely will not be able to qualify for another WC ad I think this defeat maybe to much for some.

I hope they did not break camp, and have given the players a couple days in the Hotel so they can interact with each other, talk things over, have each other for support and be able to just unwind and come to terms with what just happened.

They probably could have send them to Tobago for a couple days to get away.

I really hope the staff and administrators and administration paid close attention to how hard many of the girls took the defeat and put something in place to assist them.

The concerns and the  inquiry is one that must be considered- however in sports, nothing is a guarantee. Truth be we are not at the level of a USA who is not only expected to qualify but to beat everyone else.now consider the mental emotional and physical maturity of the USA after their game agonist TnT!' Could you imagine the devastation to their team after that close call?
So instead of this being a doomsday and life trauma event, if we reframe this, this could be an event that could develop our mental physical and emotional development for the future- from these events we ought to be coming back even stronger because we now understand the hurt of not meeting expectations.
 Next were we on
Y looking at the small picture? Did we only want to qualify and hope for the best? Let's be objective here if we want to get and play at the next level, it comes with development now not playing for the short term and hoping for the best- we have to be able to be consistently be at a level to that of USA Japan and the others. We are not there yet but we are on a pathway and this setback could be one of the greates teachers for. Most of these ladies!! IMHO

Yes...let's here your explanation of the so called support yuh talking bout. Cause either you blind, don't live in Trinidad and Tobago or haven't been following the women's national team until that game on Tuesday.

For starters there is the fallacy that the players were sent to [the CONCACAF 2015 World Cup Qualifying Tournament] with only $500... particularly the implication that they were expected to somehow get by on just that for the duration of the tournament.  The $500 was meant to cover transportation from the airport upon arrival, and then breakfast the following morning.  More finances were intended and was already in the works, it was not a last-minute something that came about as a result of Walrdum's hasty tweet.  He knew of this plan all along but thought all the money would come with the team, panicked... and here we are.

Not sure who the "powers that be" are, but there are different stakeholders, who put a varying amount of effort and support behind our sporting programs.  Not sure that the issue of the $500 is representative of any deliberate actions by the collective stakeholders.  There certainly is apathy, opportunism and malaise resident in certain quarters, but not sure that's true of the whole.

As stated, the women's program receives just about the same support as our other programs, there is no gender discrimination with regards to the aforementioned ills... those who are indifferent to the women's program are similarly indifferent to the men's program, the U-20 program, the U-17... it's equal opportunity apathy.  As I said, the ladies are as supported as any of the other programs... even among the fans.

That is level :bs:  You really reaching.

Forget the $500 thing. Care to compare the women's team to the men's team in support financially, and by fans.
Here I'll make it easier. Name - prior to the CFU Tournament - T&T Women's last friendly or game?

If it's one thing I could rely on you for is your emotional histrionics.  In attempt to disprove my statement that the ladies are "as supported as" any of our other programs, you're quizzing me on when last they played prior to the CFU Tournament.  I'm really not sure what that would prove... the assumption is that if I don't know the answer, and that would mean what?

The answer is Venezuela (twice)... but again, what does that prove/disprove?

It's not about you knowing the answer. That's an easy search. Prior to getting ready for CFU the women had not been together for almost a year, doing NOTHING.

For you to say the women are treated similarly to the men is very disingenuous. Take a poll on the forum and see how many had ever been to a women's game, more than once, prior to yesterday?

I can't believe you putting forth such misinformation.

If it's not about me knowing the answer then what's the purpose of the question?  If I was to tell you that prior to the recent CFU Championship I also couldn't tell you who the Senior MNT last played would that make a difference?

But to your latter point... all of our teams suffer from consistent training and games... ALL.  On average it costs about TTD $1.3 million to bring the men to camp.  Not sure what it costs for the women or for the junior teams, but it should be evident that with money being an issue the TTFA will not be convening camps willy nilly.  And that's not even mentioning the other associated problems of finding quality opponents who are willing to play us, and then securing the release of players from their clubs.  For the most part these are challenges which plague all of our national programs, not just the men.  So if you're looking for perfect balance in the treatments of the men's and women's program then no you won't find a perfect balance, but the FA does as best as it can with limited resources.  To suggest that they're among the crowd who ignores the women's program and only comes in at the end to try and bask in glory is inaccurate.

OK children let's do some maths! This will be fun. No. 1 "More finances were intended and was already in the works" =  Unprepared for a world cup qualification tournament. Unprofessional, embarrassing, inexcusable. No.2 "the women's program receives just about the same support as our other programs = almost next to nothing + never enough. That's why the captain had to say at the press conference that money needs to START being put into women's football. And No. 3 "Not sure who the "powers that be" are" = either you support the "powers that be" and playing dumb or you need your head examined. Probably both. All them things you say dey reminds me of a saying. Oh yes. Don't piss on my back and tell me the rain is falling. Yup. That's the one.

1. "Unprofessional, embarrassing [and] inexcusable" to not have money because the former "Special Advisor" clean out the coffers and on top of that left the TTFA with a debt owed to the WC 06 players?  Okay.

2. Yes, this is true.  See above.

3. I'm not a mind reader.  The "powers that be" could be the TTFA leadership, SporTT leadership, the Ministry of Sports, or the PP government.  All of these entities exert a level of influence and "power" over football in TnT.

After you get you emotions in check feel free to come back and clarify who it is you were referring to. Or don't... really doesn't matter that much to me.

Dark energy and the recovery period
Trinidad Guardian Reports
By: Asha De Freitas-Moseley
Published: Friday, December 5, 2014
It was once thought that the dark space of the universe was lifeless, however it is now known that it is actually full of energy potential, referred to as “dark energy.”

As an athlete in training, look at your time in between training sessions as the same “dark energy”—a time when much can be happening to best prepare the body for performance in the next training session. In periodised programs, this time frame is referred to as the recovery period.

During competition, the time in between events is understood to be invaluable in readying oneself as best as possible. The time between training sessions, however, is not treated with nearly the same respect and for obvious reasons.

Many athletes here must also have jobs which would tend to compromise a person’s ability to ideally prepare their body for the next training session. From the fete match to the elite, this is the plight of many of our elite athletes, unfortunately.

In recent years in T&T, the passion for outdoor sporting and exercise activity has increased tremendously. The group setting seems to feed into a passion to continue and compete within the sport of choice, from runners to adventure racers. Against the odds, more and more adults are managing their time to cater for high intensity training. What is happening, therefore, is there is a large population of working professionals who spend a significant amount of their time in seated positions at office jobs training with the intensity of an elite athlete and this can be potentially harmful.

While prevention is always better than cure, the current reality is that people do not invest in the prevention of their injuries. Stretching after a hard training session. Foam rolling your body to reduce muscle soreness. Drinking good drinking water (the US Environmental Protection Agency recommends a pH of between 6.5 and 8.5 for drinking water) and eating healthy to properly nourish the body are all not given the sort of respect it should be given on a consistent enough basis.

Trinbagonians love to socialize and while I won’t speak for Tobagonians as I do not live in Tobago, there are many Trinis who see sport and alcohol as operating hand-in-hand, whether they are the participant or not and yes, this can be seen from the fete level to the amateur and national level of athlete participation.

For the elite athlete, recovery time is important so that every training session becomes a session to make the body stronger, faster and better than before. For the working professional who enjoys training in sport, recovery time should be seen as a tool for preventing injuries.

These reasons are linked but emphasis placed differently while aiming for the same final outcome i.e. to perform competitively. The difference between the groups is that one is being groomed to perform at the professional level and at some point will be committed to this goal on a full-time basis, whereas the working professional participates for personal satisfaction with more opportunities to compromise the ideals of their training requirements.

When people think about sports medicine, they often jump straight to traumatic injury, surgery, pain, braces, long periods of rehabilitation with no training. However, sports medicine techniques in the realm of preventing injury is expanding.

With techniques of fascial stretching, dry needling, naturopathic medicine, rehydration and nourishment tactics, breathing training…. Every professional in the sports medicine field will have something to offer to help with the recovery period. The best part about this, just like everything else about “prevention before cure,” it is significantly more cost effective.

Getting soft tissue work once a month to assist with keeping muscles supple is a lot more cost effective than neglecting the body, compromising circulation, facilitating muscle shortening/tightening, leading to muscle imbalances. Dry needling to deal with little tweaks in the muscle, contusions and such can be employed to potentially facilitate quicker recoveries from the battle scars of sport.

What many of us do not see when we witness athletic excellence is the dedication needed in between training sessions to facilitate progression. If you or your child participates in sporting activity and exercise regularly, get educated on how you can help yourself in between sessions and live happier, healthier lives in sport.

We need Jobs
Trinidad Express Reports
By Ian Prescott ian.prescott@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Dec 3, 2014 at 11:59 PM ECT
Story Updated: Dec 3, 2014 at 11:59 PM ECT
The Women Warriors need jobs.
Team captain Maylee Attin-Johnson specifically mentioned her colleague Ahkeela Mollon when she highlighted a problem facing many of the players on the national team, which failed to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup when it lost 1-0 to Ecuador Tuesday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain.
Many have been through the United States college system and have graduated with degrees, but cannot find jobs in Trinidad and Tobago. At best, most of them have gotten ‘on-the-job training’,” she said in an interview after the match.
Attin-Johnson also called for meaningful resources to be invested in women’s football.
“A lot of us are not only talented footballers, but we are very intelligent young ladies as well. We went abroad, got a degree, and it is very difficult to come back home and not get jobs,” Attin-Johnson pointed out. “So, hopefully the heads that be can facilitate that. Help us throughout our football career and even after.”
Like many of the older players, the women’s team captain has to think of a career ahead, and at age 28 she is unsure whether she will see another World Cup qualification campaign.
“Four years from now? It’s hard to say. Especially with a loss like this. I am very distressed at this moment,” Attin-Johnson stated. “A lot of things have to change for us to commit our time. We (are) getting older, so we have to find a career that will finance us through our lives,” she added.
The captain also called on the authorities to improve the status of women footballers, so that upcoming footballers do not have to face the hardship they went through during the World Cup qualifying campaign.
“Football is not my life, it a passion for me. I graduated with a degree in sport management, so I can fall back on that. But for the other kids coming up, who are in school right now, they have a lot of football to play. Granted, I hope, a lot of resources is pumped into women’s football,” she said.
“I hope now they can see what we can give and what a little resources and investment in women’s football can do. Hopefully, the head that be, take charge and start putting money into women’s football,” she added. “I hope a lot of resources is pumped into women’s football to make it easier for the ones going to school, and the ones that are coming up to have a way of life,” she ended.

Early August, 2014: US-based coach Randy Waldrum is hired and accepts leading the team without pay until the TTFA gets funding.

August 27: One day after winning the Caribbean Championship, captain Maylee Attin-Johnson and the team’s coach Randy Waldrum appealed for funding to gather the team together to train and prepare properly in preparation for the October 12-26 CONCACAF Women’s Championship.

October 5: Six days before the start of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, some members of the Women Soca Warriors are stranded in T&T ahead because the TTFA had trouble raising $40,000 to process visas for the team. A planned pre-tour camp that was expected to include warm-up matches, is compromised and the TTFA scrambles to get the team together in time for their first match against world number one ranked USA.

October 6: The final members of the team travel to Dallas, Texas, four days after the team’s originally scheduled departure. In a last ditch effort the Ministry of Sport bailed out the TTFA providing financial support to cover costs for the training camp in Dallas to run until October 13 and other allowances and team-related expenses. Petrotrin provides casual wear and $75,000 to assist in the visa payments.

October 8: Coach Waldrum tweets about the T&T female soca warriors, “I need HELP! T&T sent a team here last night with $500 total. No equipment such as balls, no transportation from airport to hotel, nothing.”
October 9: The Haitian football team and the T&T diaspora in Dallas contribute over US$10,000 to the team. The coach is able to raise much needed funds while the Ministry of Sport injects over $200,000 to help the team.
