Sweet pan
...and the ‘noisy’ Greens (http://www.trinidadexpress.com/featured-news/-Sweet-pan-290718221.html)

It was to the accompaniment of a fearsome din coming constantly from The Greens at Panorama 2015 that the 14 medium and 15 large steelbands made their appearance on stage Sunday at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain.
Those on The Greens partied away while the competition went on.
In one sense, this is why the event was so aptly immortalised in song “Savannah Party” by David Rudder.
But when he sang about it, he was referring generally to the good time that people had at the event, not the kind of “party hard” that now constitutes The Greens, not just with rhythm sections, but sound systems, air conditioned tents, premium bars, and security guards.
When you are in there you have no idea of what’s going on on stage. But it’s not fair to the pan players after their many late nights into early morn of rehearsal to have to play in this kind of atmosphere.
This was aptly demonstrated when band No.2 in the large band category, Birdsong of Tunapuna came onstage. They were set up and ready to play but the noise never stopped. Some in the audience started to slow clap not understanding they were waiting for the noise to stop, but it never did and so they eventually played, noise and all.
This is fine and some might even say, it goes with the territory. But really, the onus is on Pan Trinbago is to find some way to monitor The Greens and make that noise stop when a band is on stage. It is so disrespectful to the bands and to the art from. This makes a mockery of the competition and the so-called love for pan. Do something about this, Pan Trinbago.
Birdsong however managed to give an entertaining performance of “Pan Magic”.
The band continues to be a talking point as their New York born and bred arranger Andy Narell continues to bring his jazz-themed arrangements to the Panorama. Narell was taught to play pan by T&T’s pan icon Ellie Mannette and has participated in a large way on our music scene, his work with David Rudder, etc.
What I liked about their arrangement is that it is home grown and reads like a who’s who of T&T music celebrity, composed and sung by visually impaired singer Nyol Manswell and produced by Carl Jacobs who is famous in his own right. Manswell, now in his 20s, started as a teen with the birdsong Academy Music Literacy Programme, where he was mentored by jazz musician Raf Robertson. Under Robertson’s tutelage, Manswell was able to apply for and win a place at the renowned Berklee School of Music where he continues to shine and when he is in Trinidad he tutors at birdsong. But the discourse surrounding Narell continues over whether his laid back style of arrangement belongs in the Panorama competition which is about pace. The argument continues with many saying Narrel should know when he is in Rome, he should do as the Romans do.
But these are my notes on the band’s performance ...birdsong gently ambled through the Big Yard with beautiful tenors delivering an atmosphere that lived up to the name “Pan Magic” but not necessarily Panorama...
The Panorama ideal, however was up right after with bp Renegades and “Jam Dem Hard”, sung by Denise Belfon and composed by another young pannist Yohann Chuckaree, one of defending champs Phase II’s frontline tenor pannists.
My notes on Renegades...lived up to the promise of the name...melodic middle passages never straying too far from the melody...joyful and exuberant played in a way that had to be taken seriously...
The competition is the culmination of the annual rite of passage that takes place at this time of year between the players, the muse and the music. The bands mentioned had contrasting styles which deserved a proper hearing, but the noise-makers have no time with that.
Pan Trinbago, we understand that The Greens is an attractive economic enterprise. But deal with the noise. Do something for pan.

The online broadcast last year was fantastic. The prepared video segments or reviews of each band were informative and really nice. And the show itself: wow! I did not think that I would have enjoyed Panorama that much, but I did.

Carnivaltv.net is back up only issue is that you may have to listen to Etienne Charles pontificate about how much he knows about music

Pan battle is on tonight (http://www.newsday.co.tt/features/0,206973.html)
By Joan Rampersad Saturday, February 14 2015 (T&T Newsday)
The much anticipated battle for pan supremacy is on tonight, at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, from 7 pm.
Playing first is NGC Couva Joylanders.
However, with an eye on the prize is Pan Elders, reigning title holder who wants to keep it. But in strong contention for that $600,000 first prize are Tobago Bands NLCB Buccooneers and NGC Steel Xplosion. Both were very impressive in the semi- final round of competition, as was Courts Sound Specialists Of Laventille.
Leading off the competition in the Large Band Category is nine times National Panorama champs bp Renegades who will be going all out to capture that tenth title and $1 million prize that goes with it. But they will have to fend off the pack leaders Massy Trinidad All Stars and Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove who have dominated the competition in the last ten years.
Consistently among the top bands is Republic Bank Exodus but after NLCB Fonclaire’s strong showing in the semi-final, that would be the band to watch. Also, and never to be underestimated is WITCO Desperadoes; leaving nothing to chance in the final.
The competition’s theme is “Reaching for the Stars….Pan in Ecstasy”.
Pan Trinbago has announced that it would honour six people for their dedicated service to the organisation. They are Milton “Wire”Austin, Tommy Crichlow, Rennison Quashie, Sharon Pitt, Wallace Austin and Eshwarlal “Sam” Ramjitsingh. While they all deserve commendation, however, doing it tonight, unfortunately, only lengthens the show which was set back almost an hour last year when similar tribute was paid to other honorees.
Also, in commemoration of Valentine’s Day, patrons will be treated to complimentary alcoholic beverages and chocolates, with those opting for the North Stand enjoying an all-inclusive experience. In addition, two lucky patrons will each win a pair of airline tickets to any Caribbean Airlines’ destination. Fans, local and foreign, can text the code of their favourite bands to a number provided by bmobile to vote in the FCL Financial People’s Choice. The bands with the most votes in each category will collect $10,000, while the person texting the most votes for the winning bands wins a Samsung S5 Smart phone courtesy blink/bmobile.

Congratulations to my band All Stars on a well deserved victory. But I don't understand some of the other placings. No way Fonclaire should have been so low. And I found that Phase II was a bit off last night. Silver Stars was awful really can't see then in 3rd at all.
