Sally Pearson calls for prize money at Olympics (http://edition.cnn.com/2015/03/18/sport/sally-pearson-olympics-prize-money/)

Sally Pearson won gold at the London 2012 Olympics in an OR of 12.48 seconds

(CNN)—Entertainers are paid for entertaining and it's time athletes received financial recompense for taking part in the Olympics, says 100m hurdler Sally Pearson.

In 2014, while the winner of Wimbledon received $2,600,000 and the Augusta Masters champion picked up $1,620,000, when Pearson won gold in the Olympics three years ago she received zero prize money.

"People come for the entertainment from the athletes -- we are entertaining them, we are entertainers" the Australian, who set an Olympic record of 12.48 seconds in her 2012 winning run in 2012, told CNN anchor Alex Thomas.

"Entertainers get paid every single time they step up onto a stage, and that's exactly what we're doing in a sporting sense."

Billions might have tuned in to watch London's 2012 Olympic Games which saw over 10,000 athletes compete across 302 events in a battle for golden glory, but the International Olympic Committee's current policy is to (IOC) hand out gold, silver and bronze medals as well as a bouquet of flowers to athletes, but no financial remuneration.

"I can see why they don't, and I'm sure they want to keep it like that, they want to keep it pure," added Pearson. "To be honest we're all still going to turn up whether we get paid or not. But the Games wouldn't happen without the athletes."

It also wouldn't happen without sponsors.

The IOC has just signed a new eight-year sponsorship deal with car manufacturing giant Toyota -- reportedly worth just under $1 billion -- adding to their list of partners that include McDonald's and Coca-Cola.

Athletes usually fund themselves through sponsorship deals, government support, grants and part-time work. In 2012 only half of American track and field athletes -- who were ranked in the top 10 in their nation -- earned more than $15,000 a year from their sport.

The fifth fastest 100m hurdler in history, Pearson told the Australia's Daily Telegraph in 2013 how a year after her Olympic gold medal in London she still wasn't attracting enough sponsors.

No stranger to hard work -- the hurdler sometimes vomits after intense training sessions -- she decided to chase down her own deals rather than sit on her hands waiting for private sponsorship.

While she has some support from Qantas, AMP and Adidas, appearance fees and prize money in the Diamond League -- an annual series of track and field meetings -- also provides revenue earning potential for the 28-year-old.

Now targeting more medal success at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Pearson achieved a resounding win at the Queensland Track Classic on March 7 with a time of 12.74s.

Even so the issue of Olympic prize money still clearly grates.

"I think the times have changed from 1896 to 2016, I think it might be time to at least have a think about it, and discuss it because there's no such thing as the Olympics without athletics or athletes," said Pearson.

(Reuters) - - Former 400 meters world champion Amantle Montsho of Botswana has been suspended for two years after testing positive for a banned substance at last year's Commonwealth Games, the head of her country's athletics association Moses Bantsi said on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old, who tested positive for methylhexaneamine at the Glasgow Games in July, plans to appeal against her ban and has until March 26 to do so, local media reported.

The Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) delivered its verdict last month following six months of investigations after Montsho's’s A and B samples tested positive for the drug.

The case was first investigated by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which found the athlete guilty of violating its anti-doping code.

It was then handed to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and finally referred back to the BAA to determine a punishment.

Montsho was the poster girl for Botswana athletics having won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Dehli, the first athlete from her country to do so, and being crowned 2011 world champion in Daegu, South Korea.

She also won the silver medal at the 2013 world championships in Moscow, losing out in a thrilling photo finish to Briton Christine Ohuruogu by four thousandths of a second.

If it is upheld, the suspension would probably end Montsho's career at the highest level.

Tyson Gay and his new coach John Smith

Former U.S. sprint champion Tyson Gay is working with world renowned sprint coach John Smith, Gay's agent, Mark Wetmore, confirmed to ESPN.com on Friday.

Gay received a one-year ban in 2013 after testing positive for a banned substance and was stripped of his 2012 Olympic silver medal from the 4x100-meter relay in London.

The new coaching move comes before the start of the 2015 outdoor track season, during which Gay could compete at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in June for a spot on the national team that would represent the United States at the IAAF World Championships in August.

Smith has coached other Olympic track stars, including Ryan Bailey, Ato Boldon, Carmelita Jeter and Jason Richardson.

Gay cooperated with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's investigation into his positive test and received a shortened suspension. His ban ended on June 22, 2014, and he returned to competition at a Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on July 3.

Gay owns three World Championship gold medals in the 100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay from the 2007 World Championships.

Justin Gatlin celebrates victory

Controversial sprinter Justin Gatlin has been given a new sponsorship deal by US sportswear giant Nike.

The 33-year-old American dominated the 100m and 200m in 2014, and is some experts' favourite to win a golden double at August's World Championships.

But Gatlin is a divisive figure, having served two doping bans, including a four-year suspension between 2006-2010.

Ex-Team GB star Jason Gardener said: "Nothing surprises me but this another bad message being sent by our sport."

The former world indoor and Olympic 4x100m champion added that there was mounting evidence that "systematic dopers" gained long-term residual benefits from their cheating, so repeat offenders needed much harsher punishments.

Top 100m times in 2014
1. Justin Gatlin  9.77  Brussels (5 September)
2. Justin Gatlin  9.80  Lausanne (3 July)
3. Justin Gatlin  9.82  Linz (14 July)
3. Richard Thompson  9.82  Port of Spain (21 June)
5. Justin Gatlin  9.83  Rieti (7 September)

Marlon Devonish agreed with his teammate from that 2004 Olympic relay quartet, saying news of Gatlin's contract will be a "kick in the teeth to the 99% of guys who are clean" but that this was a matter for the rule-makers to deal with.

"No, it doesn't sit well with me," said Devonish, who won four world relay medals between 1999 and 2009.

"But Gatlin has served his ban according to the rules: if people don't like that, change the rules."

Gatlin was sponsored by Nike prior to his second ban but has been wearing Chinese firm Xtep's kit since 2012.

His US teammate Tyson Gay, who has also recently returned from a drugs ban, will also be wearing Nike clothes and spikes this season, although the company denies this is a result of a formal tie-in.

The Oregon-based company said Gay, who was dropped by Adidas when he tested for a banned substance in 2013, is getting its equipment because he has started working with the Nike-sponsored coach John Smith in Los Angeles.

The 32-year-old Gay claimed a hat-trick of sprint medals at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, and is still the joint second-fastest man over 100m with a personal best of 9.69 seconds, but he has struggled to win individual honours during the Usain Bolt era.

Gatlin, however, has emerged as the greatest threat to Bolt's ambitions of winning a third consecutive clean sweep of the Olympic sprint medals - 100m, 200m and 4x100m - at Rio 2016.

Bolt's predecessor as Olympic 100m champion in 2004, Gatlin was unbeaten over both sprint distances last year, setting six of the seven fastest times for 100m and smashing his personal best for 200m.

The fact that he did all of this aged 32, when most sprinters are slowing down, and he was beating or matching times he set when he was proven to be cheating, has provoked widespread disquiet, bordering on disgust, on the international athletics circuit.

This flared up when the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) proposed him for its Athlete of the Year award. German discus champion Robert Harting asked to be withdrawn from consideration in protest, while IAAF presidential candidate Lord Coe told the BBC he had "big problems" with Gatlin's nomination.

The Florida-based athlete, who was also booed by the crowd at London 2012, ultimately did not make the final shortlist, despite his undeniably impressive results.

Given this reaction, Nike is taking a risk in associating itself with Gatlin, who has never admitted to cheating, although it could be argued that all publicity is good publicity.

And with Nike locked in a fierce battle with Adidas, Puma and other challengers in the global sportswear market, the chance to sign a home-grown potential Olympic champion was clearly too good to pass up.

Usain Bolt will compete at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City for the first time since 2008 when he returns to the IAAF Diamond League meeting on 13 June.

It will be a homecoming of sorts for Bolt, who set his first world record in winning the 100m in 9.72 at Icahn Stadium on 31 May 2008. His 100m world record now stands at 9.58, while his 200m mark is 19.19. Bolt has competed in the United States only once since that night, when he anchored a Jamaican 4x100m team at the 2010 Penn Relays.

Since that electric night at Icahn Stadium seven years ago, the 28-year-old Jamaican has won six Olympic gold medals and eight World Championships titles, broken seven more world records, and become one of the most famous people on the planet.

“No one could ever forget their first world record, and I will never forget the crowd in New York that night,” said Bolt. “They had to wait for an hour during a thunderstorm delay before our race, and I don’t think a single person left the stadium. They deserved a great performance, and I’m glad I was able to give it to them. I’m looking forward to running in New York again.”

Already the first man to win six Olympic gold medals in sprinting (at 100m, 200m, and the 4x100m in both 2008 and 2012), Bolt hopes to add to that legacy at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He recently announced his plans to retire after the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London.

One of the premier athletics events in the world, the Adidas Grand Prix has hosted two world records and 17 national records in its first 10 years, and its fans have had the privilege of witnessing more than a dozen US all-comers’ records. Bolt’s 2008 performance qualifies in all three categories.

The seventh stop on the international IAAF Diamond League circuit, the Adidas Grand Prix is in its 11th year at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.

Moscow

The IAAF wants two Russian race walkers to be stripped of medals from the 2012 London Olympics because of doping, the Russian anti-doping agency said yesterday.

The IAAF said on Wednesday it has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the “selective” doping bans handed to six Russian athletes earlier this year, arguing that the Russian agency decision wrongly let some results stand.

The agency, Rusada, confirmed in a statement yesterday that a key focus of the appeal is that “the IAAF did not agree with our decision to leave in force” results for walkers Sergei Kirdyapkin and Olga Kaniskina at the London Olympics.

Kirdyapkin won gold in the men’s 50-kilometre event, while Kaniskina was the silver medalist in the women’s 20-kilometer race.

In its dispute with the IAAF, Rusada has the support of Russia’s influential Sports Ministry, deputy minister Yuri Nagornykh told Russia’s Tass news agency.

Calls it quits again: Haile Gebrselassie

Haile Gebrselassie, considered one of athletics’ greatest distance runners, said yesterday he was retiring from competitive running.

The Ethiopian’s long-time manager at first said it was not the end of Gebrselassie’s career, but later issued a press release saying the runner had retired from athletics.

“Running legend Haile Gebrselassie announced his retirement from competitive running at the Great Manchester Run today where he ran his last competitive race,” the statement said.

Gebrselassie was quoted as saying: “I am retiring from competitive running, not from running. You cannot stop running, this is my life. And I am still enjoying my farewell tour like today in Manchester.”

His manager, Jos Hermens, could not be reached to explain the new statement.

“Yes, probably a kind of retirement!” Hermens said in a text message alerting Reuters to the new statement.

Earlier, Hermens had texted Reuters: “No, he’s not retiring; he will be in Glasgow in October. He’ll probably never retire.”

Gebrselassie, 42, had told BBC Sport he was retiring from competitive running after finishing 16th in the Great Manchester Run yesterday.

But it is not the first time he has talked about calling it quits.

Gebrselassie had tearfully retired five years ago after knee problems forced him to drop out of the New York City Marathon.

But he returned to racing a few months later.

Hermens admitted Gebrselassie was training a lot less than before, “so may be kind of a farewell trip in the UK!” the manager said of Gebrselassie’s upcoming race in Glasgow.

The soft-spoken Gebrselassie achieved success both on the track and the roads during his long career.

Nearly unbeatable on the track in his prime, he won his first of eight indoor and outdoor world championships at Stuttgart in 1993 and went on to hold world records from the 5,000 metres to the marathon.

His Olympic medals came in the 10,000 metres in successive Olympics, 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney.

Gebrselassie will now focus more on his businesses in Ethiopia where he is involved in real estate projects, owns four hotels, a coffee plantation and is an automobile distributor, his management company’s statement said.

“He will also remain a running ambassador and wants to stay active in athletics.”

EUGENE, Ore. — Trayvon Bromell flashed to a collegiate record of 9.84 seconds when winning his 100m heat at the USATF Outdoor Championships here in Eugene, Thursday evening.

The Baylor University sophomore and World Junior record holder, also improved his own personal best with Thursday’s performance, while clocking the second fastest time on the day.

Remontay McClain posted the fastest time of the day at 9.82 seconds, but achieved his mark in a heavy +4.9 m/s traveling wind when beating Tyson Gay (9.85) in the third heat.

Bromell’s time was done in a legal +1.3 m/s wind.

It was a sad evening for sprinter Ryan Bailey though after he false-started in his heat and failed to make it past the first round.

The wind affected most of the times on the day, as Carmelita Jeter and Jasmine Todd of Oregon both ran 10.87 with the assistance of a powerful +4.5 tailwind.

Tianna Bartoletta, Jenna Prandini, English Gardner, Jeneba Tarmoh, Tori Bowie and Dezerea Bryant all booked places in the semis.

LaShawn Merritt was the quickest around the track in the heats of the men’s 400m dash at the USATF Outdoor Championships here in Eugene, Thursday evening.

Fans Can Watch Online Streaming Coverage on USATF.TV (http://live.usatf.tv/liveusaout2015.html)

Merritt, who won the world title at the 2013 championships in Moscow, Russia, and doesn’t need to qualify, opted to carry over his midweek training session to Hayward Field to test his fitness against a quality field in the heats.

In the end, the 28-year-old finished first in 44.95 seconds and was the only runner this evening to break the 45-seconds barrier.

Bryshon Nellum and Michael Berry also looked good when they finished behind Merritt in 45.12 and 45.13, respectively.

Other heat winners on the day were David Verburg, who posted 45.20 to take the first race, while Marcus Chambers of Oregon finished super fast to land the third heat in 45.27.

NCAA champion Vernon Norwood from LSU was the winner of the fourth heat in 45.49, with the fifth and final heat going to James Harris, at 45.64.

Former World and Olympic gold medal winner Jeremy Wariner was third in heat five in 45.74 and he also booked a place in the semi-finals.

In the women’s race, world-leader Francena McCorory and Quanera Hayes both looked pretty good in their respective heats.

McCorory pulled no punches when winning her race in a quick 51.25secs, with Hayes taking her heat in 51.31.

Allyson Felix, who has a wild card in the 200m, continued her endurance work with an impressive 51.40 on her way to finishing first in heat one.

Elsewhere in the women’s 400m, Sanya Richards-Ross made easy work of her heat when winning in 51.93, while Natasha Hastings raced home behind Hayes in heat two in a quality time of 51.44.

In the women’s 800m, Ajee’ Wilson was a very relaxed 2:01.96 heat winner and she was the fastest of the heats on the day.

Joining her in the semi-finals are the likes of Alysia Montano (2:02.00) and Brenda Martinez (2:02.33).

In the men’s 400m hurdles, NCAA champion Michael Stigler won his heat in a wind-affected 49.66, with Jeshua Anderson (49.80), Quincy Downing (49.95), Bershawn Jackson (49.96) and Johnny Dutch (50.43) going through as well.

Grow up son. Stop cluting the board. It is clear that you can post in this thread on the topic which I already starting doing since yesterday.

Flex will not entertain your childish behaviour so go complain if you wish, I am doing my job which is keeping the board clutter free.

You are simply moving everyone thread into your threads. There are various championships happening around the world. You are moving every one post and thread into your own thread. This is CLEAR for everyone to see hence why the board looks very repetitive with similar posts in almost every thread right now.

Should be interesting to see how the young athletes compete against veterans for a spot in Beijing.

Not sure who will be competing. Is Gatlin, Felix, Stowers, Brommel, Gay, B Jackson competing?

Startlist here, but at the moment not showing competitors for all events http://www.flashresults.com/2015_Meets/Outdoor/06-25_USATF/

Flex this was my original thread.

Your original thread is at reply #10 above. Honestly you need to grow up.

Don't let me merging your post into a thread that was already dealing with the topic at hand ruin the rest of your life.

I am a mod on this board and I was simply doing my job so Flex will not entertain your childish argument.

Now I am going to re-post my original thread AGAIN. A separate championship happening at the moment similar to threads created for different championships on the board . If you don't see it as a thread you know Socapro merged or deleted it again.

Use your braincells nah man?
The thread on Jamaica Track & Field includes news on all Jamaican track meets of interest because this is not a Jamaican track and field board.

I am only allowing seperate threads for Meets if those Meets involve T&T athletes because this is a board which is basically dedicated to promoting T&T track and field above everything else.

Where other countries are concerned all their meets will be included/merged into one dedicated thread unless of course there are T&T athletes involved in that meet.

Doh hurt yuh head and get with the programme.

There are separate threads on the board for International athletes (Bolt for example). There is a thread on Jamaican meets which is International meets and not merged into this thread. We have had other International based championships discussed in separate threads. You are contradicting yourself.

See the thread on the US championships was deleted. Posted then merged into this 100th International thread (seeing most threads are based on International meets)

People contribute and I do a great job as a Mod on this board. I have been a moderator on here for many years now and this is the very first time I merged one of your threads and it was for a logical reason which I have already explained. Your post was not deleted, it was simply merged and if you noticed I already posted in this thread on the very topic so you were late in posting on the topic.

Now grow up and stop behaving like a 5 year old spoilt child with nothing better to do with your life.

You merged a thread because it was not a Caribbean based athlete or Championship. Everyone can see it, everyone knows it. As we look on the board and see MANY threads not based on T&T athletes that are dedicated to International events and not merged into this thread we see your way of thinking and why you were in a rush to merge my thread. You can only fool yourself

The board remains mostly dormant in terms of poster discussion because many people are not willing to contribute to your threads due to your way of thinking

You really need to get a life.

I don't regularly merge threads on here but when I see the need to do it I will as that is the job of the board moderators of which I am one.

You honestly need to get a life and stop hurting your head as I already explained why I did the merge and you just have to live with it.

You are behaving like if me merging your late post on the US Trials with this thread will affect the rest of your life. Your life could not be that empty, could it?

Tyson Gay

Tyson Gay won the 100m at the US trials as 19-year-old Trayvon Bromell became the first teenager to qualify for the American World Championships team.

Gay, 32, clocked 9.87 seconds and will return to the Worlds in Beijing in August for the first time since 2009. Bromell ran 9.84 in the heats, making him the tenth-fastest man in history, and was second in the final with 9.96.

Diamond League champion Justin Gatlin has a bye for the 100m in Beijing but will still race in the 200m trials. Gatlin, 33, has run 2015's fastest 100m and 200m - 9.75 and 19.68 seconds respectively - while double-Olympic champion Usain Bolt has posted 10.12 in the 100m so far in 2015 after coming back from injury.

Bromell, who ran a wind-assisted 9.76 seconds in his semi-final, had the advantage over Gay early in the trials final but the 2007 world champion powered through in the final 30m and won by almost a tenth of a second.

Meanwhile at the Jamaican trials in Kingston, former world-record holder Asafa Powell surged to the 100m title but 2011 world champion Yohan Blake failed to make the final.

Powell, 32, pulled away from the field in the last 20m to equal his season best of 9.84.

However Blake, 25, was sixth in Powell's semi-final in a time of 10.36. The 2012 Olympic 100 and 200m silver medallist won the world title in 2011 when Bolt was disqualified for a false start.

Bolt withdrew from the trials on Thursday.

Miguel Francis, 20-year-old Antiguan sprinter sizzles to 19.76

There's a new sprint king on the rise in the Caribbean. He is 20-year-old Antiguan Miguel Francis, who trains with Racers track club with Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Warren Weir.

Francis, on Saturday, 28th June, established a 200m New National record of 19.76 into a negative 1.1m/s wind at Antigua and Barbuda National Track and Field Championship at the National Yasco Sport complex

Francis, who entered the event with a then PB of 20.31 done in May at the Cayman Invitational, finished well ahead of Kasheem Colbourne 21.38 and Raphael McCoy 21.97.

Francis’ manager, Kwame Galloway told TrackAlerts.Com that they are “humbled by the time.”
“I knew he was ready to run a special time.  His training ethics has changed tremendously,” he said while “thanking Coach Glen Mils and his Racers Track club for supporting this big venture.”

Francis’ personal best over 100m is 10.28, done on May 30 at the National Stadium in Kingston.
“God is good and I am so happy that I was there to witness history in the making,” Galloway added.

Samantha Edwards won the women’s 200m in 23.38 ahead of Arianne Strunkey 23.87.

America’s top sprinters Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay are not prepared to write-off Usain Bolt just yet as they conspire to dethrone him at the World Championships in Beijing, China in August.

Bolt, who qualifies for the 100m and 200m at the World Championships automatically as the defending champion in both events, has struggled for form this season.

But both Gatlin and Gay are convinced the Jamaican super star will be at his best when it matters, August 22-30 in Beijing.

“You never know until you cross the finish line,” Gatlin said. “I think everybody’s going to be ready and prepared.”

Bolt, the 100m and 200m world record holder, has only managed best times of 10.12 seconds and 20.13secs over the two distances this year.

His decision not to compete at the just concluded Jamaican National Senior Championships has also served to heighten concerns about his fitness level.

However Gay said the best approach was to prepare to face Bolt at his best.

“Right now, I’m not paying to attention to Usain Bolt,” Gay said. “He’s a championship performer. He’ll be ready when it counts.”

Gatlin holds the top time in the world this year in the 100m with a 9.74 seconds while Gay has clocked 9.87 seconds.

Bolt however has yet to break 10 seconds in a 100 in 2015 or 20 seconds in the 200m.

Gatlin and Gay will lead a strong US sprint contingent to the World Championships aiming to wrest the coveted 100m crown from Jamaica’s grasp.

The once-dominant Americans have not won a global 100m title since 2007 – when Gay won both the 100m and 200m world titles.

Isaac Izak Makwala, Botswana’s 400m champion

Botswana’s 400m champion, Isaac Izak Makwala, today smashed the African men’s 400m record at the 35th Résisprint International athletics meeting (http://www.sep-olympic.ch/resisprint/index.php), inside the  Stade de la Charrière, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

Isaac Makwala, the fastest African over 400m in 2014, stormed over the finish line in 44.01 seconds – erasing the previous record of 44.10 set by Gary Kikaya of the DR Congo eight years ago (on September 9, 2006) in Stuttgart, Germany.

His compatriot Pako Seribe came second in 45.21 while Savior Kombe of Zambia finished third in 45.48.

Makwala’s time, subject to ratification by the IAAF, is not only a new African record, but also the third fastest time this year and a new national record for Botswana.

Makwala later came back to win the men’s 200m in a stunning 19.96 seconds, another national record for the Botswana star, and bettered the meets records for the 200m (20.29 by  Stéphane Buckland of Mauritius) and the 400m (44.64 by Leslie Djhone of France).

Nigerian-born Femi Ogunode of Qatar clocked 20.32 for second place and Mosito Lehata of Lesotho finished in third place in 20.73.

Less than 24 hours after South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk broke his African record with 43.96 at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Paris, Isaac Makwala took it back with a sensational 43.72 run at the Resisprint meeting in the Swiss city of La Chaux-de-Fonds on Sunday (5).

Makwala’s previous African record was set at the 2014 edition of this meeting, where he ran 44.01. Just two days short of the record’s first anniversary, van Niekerk shaved 0.05 from that mark in the French capital on Saturday.

Determined to take it back, Botswana’s Makwala shot into the lead in La Chaux-de-Fonds and had a sizeable lead at half way. Qatari teenager Abdalelah Haroun came on strong in the closing stages, but Makwala was able to hold on to his lead.

He crossed the line in 43.72, the fastest time in the world since Jeremy Wariner won the world title in 2007. Now the fastest non-US 400m sprinter in history, Makwala moves to fifth on the world all-time list, ahead of Olympic champion Kirani James and world champion LaShawn Merritt.

It is the third year in a row in which Makwala has competed in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 2013 he clocked a national 200m record of 20.21 and a 400m season’s best of 45.86. One year later, he improved his 200m record to 19.96 and clocked 44.01 over 400m.

His fastest 400m time outside of Switzerland is his 44.23 clocking, set when winning the African title in Marrakech last year.

In second, Haroun recorded a senior Asian record of 44.27 to finally better the 44.68 PB he has clocked three times this year. The 18-year-old moves to second on the world junior all-time list, 0.40 behind world junior record-holder Steve Lewis.

South Africa’s Henricho Bruintjies set a South African record in the 100m. The 21-year-old ran 9.97 (0.8m/s) in the heats but was met with a -2.1m/s headwind in the final, which he won in 10.28.

The top three finishers in the women’s 400m set PBs. Nigeria’s Patience George won in 50.76, half a second faster than her previous best, while Zambia’s Kabange Mupopo broke her own national record by 0.01 with 50.86 in second place. Italy’s Maria Benedicta Chigbolu was third in 51.67.

Chris Brown

Chris “Fireman” Brown, the former national record holder in the 400 and one of the London Olympics “Golden Knights,” has not been selected by the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) to run the individual 400 metres at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing next month.

“It feels personal, it feels like someone is trying to sabotage this point in my career. I don’t know what the motivation is, but issues continue to come up for whatever reason,” Brown said. “God is good and he has the final say. I am not worried and I am not concerned at all. I know what I have contributed to the country and to the sport in all my years competing. My hopes are up and I feel good. If they decide that I should not be a part of this team, I wish them all the best moving forward and I will continue doing what I have to do and what is best for my family and my career.”

Brown, 36, did not compete in the event at last weekend’s BAAA Senior Nationals, but has run three sub-45 second 400m races this season and his time of 44.54 seconds stands as the second fastest time of any Bahamian this year, behind Steven Gardiner’s 44.27.

Gardiner took first place at the Nationals, breaking Brown’s record – which had stood since 2008 - in the process.

The top four finishers all went under the world championships qualifying standard of 45.50sec, with Michael Mathieu second in 45.00, LaToy Williams third in 45.30 and Ramon Miller ran 45.36 for fourth.

The BAAA mandated that athletes must compete at the Nationals in the event in which they expected to contest at the World Championships.

Brown was denied an exemption from competing in the 400m by federation executives and opted to compete in the 200m instead, where he finished second.

“My coach sent in the letter to the federation and there was no personal communication with me and the federation. For whatever reason the bye was not accepted,” he said.“The reason behind the bye was simply because I was trying to get in the best possible position to be on the podium for the individual event as be as ready as I can be to run with the same ability I have done so for many years. It’s been a busy year but you can’t deny that I have performed. Based upon my training and racing back-to-back many weekends, he decided he wanted to run me in something shorter. My recovery was a factor and of course being 36 my age plays a factor in that. He was hoping that it would give me an easier recovery time as we get ready to head back on the circuit.”

Brown was in the midst of a renaissance season which saw him deliver a series of impressive performances in his signature event, a pair of personal bests and one new national record.

In April, he ran 44.76 at the Drake Relays, followed with a time of 44.74 on the Diamond League Circuit in June and a season’s best time of 44.54 in May, currently the 10th fastest time in the world on the IAAF Top Lists.

Brown also set a national record in the 300m in 31.99s at the Birmingham Grand Prix, and set a new personal best in the 200m at last weekend’s nationals where he ran 20.58.

“It is a shocker to me honestly because I qualified three times. Went under 45 seconds three times, so I thought I would give us a good chance to medal and put our best effort  out there but that looks like that is not the case,” he said. “Only one person in the country has run faster than I have. I would have easily accepted this had the three runners finished ahead of my times this season, no problem. If they had went under that time then I would have known that my sport would have been taken. But if you have guys that finish over 45 seconds and none has beaten my time, then you take two people that have run under 44 seconds consistently.”

While he was not named to the roster to compete in the individual 400m, Brown was placed in the relay pool for the 4x400m relay.

“That does not make sense to me. If your rules say I cannot compete then why would you put me in the 4x400m pool, how would you justify that. I can’t get,” he said. “For me, I hit the standard three times and I don’t know what else I have to do to prove myself.”

Mike Sands, president of the BAAA, refuted claims that the decision was personal in nature, but that Brown simply did not adhere to the rules of competition set forth by the organisation.

“The criterion that all the athletes were made aware of was to come, register and run the event which you would wish to run at the World Championships. All of the athletes came and they registered and they ran the event which they wanted to compete at the World Championships. Mr Brown, through his coach, I think a day or two before the event, submitted a request for a bye that would have excluded him from running the 400m. The executives, after deliberation, did not see a compelling reason, given the nature and competitiveness of the 400m and also the rules of engagements that were known to the athletes long before, that Mr Brown should have been given a bye,” Sands said.

“Mr Brown and his management were advised that it is a grave risk if he chose not to run the 400m because there were a number of qualifiers and potential qualifiers. The integrity of the national championships and the national trials had to be kept intact, so at the end of the day, the risk that Mr Brown took did not pay the dividends he expected and it’s a very sad day for us.”

Brown did not compete in the 400m at the Nationals in 2014 but was still selected to compete in the individual event and the 4x400m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Sands said that mandatory competition at the BAAA Nationals is a rule that must be enforced to give the meet its proper prestige and place of importance on the athletics calendar.

“We have always encouraged the athletes and insisted on this, but we have to enforce it. You have to maintain the integrity of the meet, of the federation and you have to be careful with the precedence you set,” he said. “I think when the athletes come home and don’t run their specialty event, it also does a disservice to the Bahamian people that are actually paying those subventions. So, to maintain the integrity of the event and the rules and regulations that govern the athletes we have to enforce those rules. This was known to the athletes long before the meet.”

To that end  - in 2016, the Nationals will be dubbed the BTC/BOC/BAAA Olympic Trials and in order for athletes to compete in the Olympic Games, the BOC has announced that it will be mandatory to compete at these trials.

Jobodwana won the 200m A-race. So yes, our medal hopes are more bleak.

South Africa, France and GB each have at least two sub 10 runners. St Kitts has one sub 10 and about two near 10 flat. We need another sub 10 runner to have a chance.

Why? I don't think that Van Neikerk is in the 4x1 for SA, I believe he is in the 4x4 squad.

I think our medals hopes in the 4x1 is still up there in the top 5 in the world once we get enough relay practice in before Beijing and the guys run in the best order to suit their strenghts.

St Kitts only has one man Antoine Adams near 10 flat 10.03 to be exact (outside of Kim Colin) and Adams recently got injured at the T&T Open Champs. Their next fastest man Brijesh Lawrence is 10.15 and after that they have Jason Rogers with 10.17.

Despite us losing Richard Thompson to injury, T&T still has 4 healthy sprinters who are as fast or faster than the top 4 sprinters from St Kitts.
Apart from sub-10 Keston Bledman, we also have Marcus Duncan 10.15, Jamol James 10.15, Rondel Sorrillo 10.16, Marc Burns 10.17. In addition we also have the experienced Emmanuel Callender 10.21 and Mikel Thomas the Hurdler who ran 10.24 this season.

See 2015 Top 100m List for confirmation: http://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/sprints/100-metres/outdoor/men/senior/2015

Darrel Brown is a disappointment this season as he is yet to run a time below 10.30. If he was sub10.20 I am sure the NAAA selectors would consider him for our 4x1 relay squad for Beijing based upon his experience.

Asafa Powell sprinted away from the field in the final stage to pull off another victory this season, the men’s 100m at the Spitzen Leichtathletik meet in Luzern, Switzerland, yesterday.

Powell continued his impressive form clocking 9.87 seconds while distancing himself from the field at the 80m mark to secure a dominant win.

Powell crossed the finished line ahead of fellow countrymen Nesta Carter, who ran 10.06 for second place and Kemar Bailey-Cole (10.10). The winning time was the fourth quickest this season for the former World Championships bronze medallist, who has a season’s best time of 9.81.

Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown ran a fantastic opening 100m in the 200m, but faded to second place in a season best of 22.61 -– just edging out American Tiffany Townsend (22.62).

Campbell-Brown was denied of first place by Charonda Williams of the USA who finished the course in 11.14 seconds then completed the double with a 22.32 secs to secure the 200m.

South African 400m record holder Wayde van Niekerk, who only recently produced a fast 43.96 to beat Grenada’s Kirani James over 400m in Paris, sizzled to a stunning time of 19.94 secs to win the men’s 200m against a solid field that had also included Olympic bronze medallist Warren Weir of Jamaica.

USA Men’s 4x100m relay team wearing jersey sponsored by Nike

A potential firestorm is brewing in US athletics involving shoe sponsor companies Nike and Adidas. Athletes running for Adidas were allegedly barred from wearing the Team USA jersey sponsored by Nike in the men’s 4x100m relay at the Monaco Herculis Diamond League.

The athletes affected were Marvin Bracy and Trell Kimmons who were slated to represent Team USA ‘B’ team.

Both Bracy and Kimmons are Adidas sponsored athletes. Apparently, the only time athletes that have sponsors other than Nike can wear a Team USA kit is at a major championship such as the Olympic Games and the World Championship. Mike Rodgers made these revelations in a post-race interview in Monaco. “I wish our ‘B’ team could run but we had some complications with our federation and Adidas say they couldn’t run. So we need to get that fix or people who sign with Adidas can’t run no relays. They can’t run unless is World Champs or Olympic Games”.

Rodgers noted that he and his teammates were unaware of the situation prior to the race. “We didn’t know until we checked in today, Adidas called and is like none of our athletes can run. We were very upset we didn’t have anybody to race today, it is what it is”.

Nike has a long standing agreement with the USATF which expires in 2040. This is a classic case of whose holding the handle and the blade. It is left to be seen if this powerful struggle between these two giant shoe companies will impact the livelihood of American athletes not sponsored by Nike.

The 4x100m ‘A’ team in Monaco comprising veterans Mike Rodgers, Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin are all sponsored by Nike. Trayvon Bromell who ran the lead off leg will likely get a Nike deal if and when he makes a decision at the end of August about turning professional.

If Bolt decides to compete in Beijing he will be in 9.7x form or better. The main thing he needs to get together is his start and if he does then he will take care of Gatlin.

No impropriety: Mo Farah

UK Athletics has found no impropriety on the part of Mo Farah after receiving the initial findings of a review into the double Olympic champion’s relationship with coach Alberto Salazar, it said yesterday.

The review followed a BBC documentary last month that alleged Salazar and US Olympic silver medallist Galen Rupp had violated anti-doping rules.

UK Athletics said in a statement that it had received this week the initial findings of the review by its Performance Oversight Group (POG).

It said the findings would have to be shared with Britain’s anti-doping agency before any wider circulation, and did not expect any public announcement until after the world championships in Beijing next month.

“However, with reference to the first and most vital objective of the review, the board can confirm that none of the extensive information supplied to the POG contained any evidence of impropriety on the part of Mo Farah,” it said.

Nor did the information give “UK Athletics any reason to question the appropriateness of the input given by the Oregon Project to Mo Farah’s training regime”.

UK Athletics had sought to establish whether it was right to have confidence in the US training camp where Farah has been based since 2011.

Farah, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing, has expressed anger about the allegations made about Salazar and withdrew from a Diamond League meeting in Birmingham last month.

The 32-year-old, who won gold in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the 2012 London Olympics, said then that he was upset his name had “been dragged through the mud”.

American Salazar, who has worked as a consultant for British Athletics since 2013, has denied the allegations made against him.
Title: US champion off WC roster over Nike uniform squabble

US champion off WC roster over Nike uniform squabble (http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/sports/20150812/us-champion-wc-roster-over-nike-uniform-squabble)

In this March 7, 2014, file photo, Nick Symmonds runs in the men's 800m heat during the Athletics World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland.

MIAMI:

As other runners wrap up their preparation for the World Championships in Beijing, Nick Symmonds plans to retreat into nature, seeking solitude after being left off the United States squad in a squabble over Nike uniforms the team must wear.

Fishing and climbing rocks are a way for the middle-distance runner to clear his mind and deal with the "frustration and letdown that I'm experiencing right now", he said.

Symmonds, a silver medallist at 800 metres at the last World Championships, refused to sign a contract that USA Track and Field (USTATF) requires of all athletes before they're placed on the team. When the official roster was named on Monday, Symmonds wasn't on it despite his win at the US championships in June.

For Symmonds, the issue is Nike's standing as USATF's official uniform sponsor. Anyone going to Beijing later this month on the US team is required to wear Nike gear at team functions. Symmonds is sponsored by a rival shoe company, Brooks, and wanted a clear definition of what a Team USA function was.

"I guess a small part of me thought they weren't stupid enough to leave me off the team," Symmonds said. "Apparently, they are.

"Emotionally and physically, I'm beat up right now."

Except for the exclusion of Symmonds, there were no surprises on the roster released Monday. There are five defending World champions on the US squad, including Ashton Eaton (decathlon), LaShawn Merritt (400 metres), David Oliver (hurdles), Brittney Reese (long jump), and Brianna Rollins (hurdles).

Marquee sprinters such as Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay, and Allyson Felix are also on the team.

Taking Symmonds' place in the 800m is Clayton Murphy, who finished fourth at nationals.

Too Much Power

The 31-year-old Symmonds is known for taking stances on social and business issues that surround what he believes is a widely corrupt world of track and field. He said he couldn't sit idly by on this topic, believing that giving Nike so much power on what athletes can and can't wear at major events may hinder sponsorship deals down the road.

(http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/Socapro/Nick%20Symmonds%20wins%20800%20metres%20event%20at%20US%20Track%20and%20Field%20Championships%20in%20Eugene%20Oregon.jpg) (http://s124.photobucket.com/user/Socapro/media/Nick%20Symmonds%20wins%20800%20metres%20event%20at%20US%20Track%20and%20Field%20Championships%20in%20Eugene%20Oregon.jpg.html)
In this June 28, 2015, file photo, Nick Symmonds wins the 800 metres event at the US Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

"We have to wear Team USA kit at all official Team USA functions, which is fine. I'm fine with it," said Symmonds, who plans to eschew training for a bit to fish and rock climb. "The problem is they never define what a Team USA function is. They do that almost on purpose so they can call anything a Team USA function."

USATF makes about $20 million a year in a sponsorship contract with Nike that was recently extended to run through 2040.

The federation issued a statement on Monday, saying, "The only restriction USATF places on athletes' apparel or appearance at any time is when they represent the United States in national team competitions, award ceremonies, official team press conferences, and other official team functions tied to these national team events."

USATF said it invests more than 50 per cent of its revenue directly into athlete support.

"We look forward to continuing to expand our programmes for athletes and we hope to see Nick on future national teams," the statement said.

Symmonds was a Nike-sponsored athlete for about seven years before switching to Brooks last year. He did so because "I needed a company that could work with me and match my personality a little bit better", Symmonds said.

He won the 800m at the National Championships in June, finishing in a time of one minute, 44.53 seconds. Symonds decided to skip lucrative competitions in Europe to concentrate on his training in Seattle so he could be in prime shape for Beijing. He felt like he was possibly in even better condition than when he earned silver at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.

"We're not going to get a chance to find out what I can do," Symmonds said. "That's a travesty."

Although he has an airline ticket and a visa into China, Symmonds isn't sure if he will attend as a spectator or watch from home.

"I want to apologise to the fans who want to see me run," Symmonds said. "I just feel that I can't go out there and put on that Team USA jersey and feel good about it, while all the athletes are being mercilessly bullied and threatened by USATF at the same time."

Daphne Schippers already set the tone for a competitive women sprint Olympic year. She handled the Jamaican (who is topped to be the next JA star) Elaine Thompson very well to win her last race.

It shouldn't be such a surprise, really, having mothers out there on the track. Not in a garland-holding, tear-dabbing, emoji-moment capacity but in full kit, at the coal face, on the start line, competing.

Of course it happened with some blatancy back in 1948 when Dutch sprinter and mother-of-two Fanny Blankers-Koen won four gold medals at the London Olympics. Commentators called her "The Flying Housewife", perhaps to reassure themselves she was still more at home among pots and pans than the heavily male-dominated world of amateur sport.

So hail the difference in 2016. No-one is going to call Jessica Ennis-Hill a "flying" or any other kind of "housewife".

She is an athlete, reigning Olympic and world heptathlon champion, and mother to Reggie, who will be two when she competes at the age of 30 in Rio this summer -- injury and Zika virus allowing.

The world of sport has moved on since 1948, it has edged closer to a level playing field between the genders so that the competitive will of mothers -- with spectacularly good child care -- can be accommodated and not thwarted by the system.

http://www.people.com/article/boris-berian-runner-mcdconalds-cook-turned-world-champion

In two years, Boris Berian went from working at McDonald's to becoming a global star in track and field.

On Saturday, the 23-year-old won a gold medal in the 800-meter race at the IAAF world indoor championships in Portland, Oregon. Berian built a 10-meter lead during the first quarter mile of the race and finished in 1:45.83, according to Runner's World.

"It was simple. Just take the lead right away and then hang on," Berian told reporters afterward the race, according to the Denver Post. "That's how I feel most comfortable racing, and that's exactly what I wanted to do."

Taplin's time is SERIOUSSSS. Many big names are at least 3/4s of a second behind him. Hence, he has set the marker for the season.

Here are some names in the mens events that I think will surprise us this year:

Andre Degrasse - I watch Degrasse run a 200m this weekend. He was almost "Boltesque". Jogged the final 50-60m and won the race with little effort in 20.23.

Wayde Van Niekerk - Although Van Niekerk is a 400m man, I predict he will open some eyes and run 19.7 or less in the 200m this year. If he does, I can see him also doing the 200m if the Olympic schedule allows.

Bralon Taplin - I wonder if he has enough gas in the tank. He ran indoors and tanked in the 400m final. The outdoor season is even more demanding so we will see if he can carry it through to the Olympics. If Rondell Bartholomew can overcome his injury woes, Grenada may just have a chance of putting together a medal contending team in the 4x400.

One last thing, Cedenio, Lendore, Gordon, Quow and Solomon know that spots on the 4x400 team arent a given. Them men will step up their game this year. Goodbye Ian Morris record. My guess is either Cedenio or Lendore or BOTH!

LaShawn Merritt toasts the competition with a boss 2nd 100m in a wind legal 19.78. With a very average turn, this demonstrates his strength and speed endurance more than pure speed at this point. It's particularly impressive given this is mid-April; can't remember even 100/200m guys running the 200m this fast, this early.

I would not be surprised if Van Nekirk drops a similar time this season; they both need to if they expect to challenge MJ's 400m record this year or anytime soon. At 19.8 they should be able to to get out a second slower with some level of comfort in 20.8, then close 1.5 seconds slower (22.3) to get to 43.1.

Bolt withdraws from 2016 Jamaica Trials

Usain Bolt has withdrawn from the Jamaica Olympic Trials with a hamstring tear, Bolt announced in a statement posted on Twitter.

Bolt was attempting to qualify for his fourth Olympics at the Jamaican National Championships, and will now seek qualification for this summer’s Games in Rio de Janeiro at the London Anniversary Games on July 22.

“After feeling discomfort in my hamstring after the first round last night and then again in the semi-final tonight I was examined by the Chief Doctor of the National Championships and diagnosed with a Grade 1 tear,” Bolt wrote. “I have submitted a medical exemption to be excused from the 100m final and the remainder of the National Championships. I will seek treatment immediately and hope to show fitness at the London Anniversary Games on July 22 to earn selection for the Olympic Games in Rio.”

Bolt holds the world records at 100 and 200 meters, and has previously won gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter races and the 4x100-meter relay at the 2008 and ’12 Olympics.

Since the 2012 Olympics, Bolt has won world championship gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters and 4x100-meter relay at the ’13 and ’15 world championships.

Bolt competed at the JN Racers Grand Prix in Kingston a few weeks ago and ran a quick 9.88 in the 100 meters despite nearly falling at the start.

Although Bolts injury is considered as grade 1. It is still a significant injury. Last year he barely beat Gatlin. I cannot see him running sub 9.8x at the Olympics considering the injury and the time needed to become 100%. If Bolt runs in Rio, I doubt that he will double.

The JAAA will choose Bolt over Minzie. But that might end up being a bad decision if Bolt does not fully recover. Even worse, if Bolt pulls up in any of the races, the JAAA will have some explaining to do.

When Elaine thompson peaks in Rio she should be around 10.6x. So you are right. Im so shocked that Tianna Bartoletta ran 10.78... her times this season dont indicate that. However she does perform well when need be so we'll wait until Rio to see.

One thing that must be said is that all the ladies who have run 10.7x or below have complete races and if MLA wishes to run these times it will require her to have the same.

I am suspicious that both she and Fraser-Pryce (of the same club) did not show up for the 200m.
While Fraser-Pryce is nursing an injury, Thompson looked very composed and unstressed after the 100m.
Just hoping there weren't any "testing" issues, as I cannot see a reason for Thompson to chance not qualifying in her stronger event.
What's going on?

Thompson is nursing a sore thigh and her MVP coach did the cautious thing by applying for a medical exemption to keep her healthy with Rio only about 4 weeks away. Thompson has nothing to prove in the 200m as she is currently 4th ranked in the world (http://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/sprints/200-metres/outdoor/women/senior/2016) and is the highest ranked Jamaican who has already ran faster than the Olympic standard a number of times this season.

With youth, veterans and surprises, USA dominates medals in track and field

RIO DE JANEIRO — The sprint distances belonged to Usain Bolt and Jamaica, as they have for the past three Olympic Games. Likewise with the longer distances, in which Kenya (and Mo Farah of Great Britain) again led the way.

New marks were set. South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk shattered Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old record in the 400 meters. Kenyans set Olympic records in the men’s steeplechase and women’s 5,000. Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana set a world record in the women’s 10,000.

There were memorable scenes. Bolt celebrating after his ninth career gold medal, crowing, “I am now the greatest.” Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller diving through the finish line to capture gold in the women’s 400. Brazil’s Thiago Braz da Silva, the local hero, dueling France’s Renaud Lavillenie into the early hours of the morning before winning gold in the pole vault.

Then there was the USA. Leaving other countries to their individual stars and notable moments, the world’s dominant track and field power once again lapped the field.

The USA claimed 32 medals: 13 gold, 10 silver and nine bronze. That's the most for the USA in track since Los Angeles in 1984 (40), and the most in a non-boycotted Games since Los Angeles again in 1932. Only one other time between 1956 and this year (30, in 1992) had the USA even reached 30.

Only two other countries in Rio, Kenya with 13 medals and Jamaica with 11, collected double-digit medals. Seven medals came from the middle distances and up.

To put the dominance into perspective, the USA took home as many medals as Kenya, Jamaica and Ethiopia combined.

They came from a variety of disciplines, from sprints through longer distances, in jumps and throws, from male and female athletes. There were some firsts (women.s 1,500, 3,000 steeplechase, shot put) and plenty of "first time sinces".

Ashton Eaton claimed his second gold medal in a row in the decathlon. Likewise with Christian Taylor in the triple jump, and with the women’s 4x100 relay. The USA made history in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, becoming the first country to sweep the medal podium in the event.

Allyson Felix, the underrated and often overlooked legend, won another three Olympic medals to push her career total to nine; she is the most decorated female track athlete in her country’s history.
