Central FC must overcome do-or-die group in Caribbean crown defence.
ttproleague.com.

Reigning Caribbean champions Central FC will compete in one of two do-or-die three-team groups Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship 2016 when preliminary-round play runs off from 24-28 February (Group 1-3) and 2-6 March (Group 4).

Central, the Trinidad and Tobago Digicel Pro League champions and 2015 Caribbean Club Championship winners, must travel to Jamaica in Group 2 where they meet host club and last season’s third place finishers, Montego Bay United, and Scholars International SC (Cayman Islands) at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, Montego Bay.

Meanwhile fellow Pro League outfit and last season’s defeated finalists and multiple-time former Caribbean champions, W Connection, will host Group 1 in Trinidad (February 24-28) at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad, where they will welcome Club Sportif Moulien (Guadeloupe), Inter Moengotapoe (Suriname) and Atletico San Cristobal (Dominican Republic).

Haiti’s Don Bosco FC will welcome Somerset Cricket Club (Bermuda) and La Gauloise de Basse-Terre (Guadeloupe) in Group 2 at the Stade Sylvio Cato in Petion Ville.

While Group 4 consists of Club Atletico Pantoja (Dominican Republic), America FC (Haiti), Arnett Gardens FC (Jamaica) and SV Notch (Suriname). Atletico Pantoja will host the group at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Commenting on his team’s grouping and the challenge ahead, Central FC’s interim head coach Dale Saunders said, “We were here before as a team and have a good idea in what to expect. The Jamaicans (Montego Bay United) will be the toughest [in the group stage], but once we put in the right level of preparation and the players commit to the effort, I believe the combination of our team could take us all the way again.”

Last season, under the charge of coach Terry Fenwick and Saunders as assistant coach, Central topped their three-team group in Guyana, with wins over host club Alpha United and Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe.

The Couva Sharks went on to defeat Haiti’s Don Bosco 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw in the semi-finals, then defeated 9-men W Connection 2-1 in the final last May to lift the Caribbean crown in their first attempt.

Connection were also perfect in last season’s group stage with wins over Antigua and Barbuda’s SAP FC and Guyana Defence Force before defeating Montego Bay United in the semi-final round, securing an all-Trinidad final.

Saunders, who was shifted into the position of interim coach last December after Central parted ways with Ross Russell after just five months, said the Couva Sharks are equipped with an experienced coaching staff, good support from the club’s management, and an experience squad.

He added that last season’s experience was an “eye-opener” for the club’s younger players, who now want to do even better for the club.

Saunders, a former Trinidad and Tobago international with experience as a player and assistant coach at the Caribbean Club Championship during his time with previous club Joe Public, added, “It’s always a good challenge at this level. It’s something I am accustomed as a player and assistant coach. I know the type of work players need to put in for this stage.”

The four group winners of this season’s edition will advance into the Final Round to be contested 29 April – 1 May 2016 in a straight knock-out format in order to crown the champions of the 2016 CFU Club Championship and also determine the three (3) Caribbean berths to the CONCACAF Champions League 2016-17.

Lots of potential. Many good attributes but has to improve on his positioning. Not sure what his best position is though.

Jamal Charles brace gives W Connection victory over Atlantico after three players sent off.
ttproleague.com.

W Connection scored an emphatic 4-2 win over Dominican Republic outfit Atlantico FC in their opening Concacaf Champions League (CCL) 2016-17 qualifying game on Wednesday night in a hot contest that saw three players sent off by St. Lucian referee Leo Clarke at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad.

Twenty-one-year-old midfielder Jomal Williams equalised twice for Connection before 20-year-old substitute forward Jamal Charles netted his first professional goals with a late double to put the Savonetta Boys at the top of their group in the 2016 Caribbean Club Championship, which will determine the three Caribbean berths at next season’s CCL.

Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe are second on the four-time group – only by goal-difference – after registering a hard-fought 3-2 win over Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien in the first game of Wednesday’s double-header.

Moengotapoe had led 2-0 at the break after an own-goal credited to Cedric Vamur in the 26th minute and forward Romeo Kastiel scoring in the 31st minute. But the Suriname club sloppily allowed Moulien back in the game with goals through second half substitute Steve Bizasene on 47 minutes and Willis Francillonne in the 64th minute.

Luckily, for coach Jeroe Hesron’s side, Kastiel was able to find the winner to complete his double in stoppage-time by pouncing on a rebound after goalkeeper Kevin Ajax failed to hold an effort from former W Connection forward Stefano Rijssel.

Rijssel, a Suriname national team forward, along with Ives Vlijter, were both denied by the upright just before the break, in a half that should have had Moengotapoe with a handful of goals.

Connection too, were twice denied by the frame at the Couva venue. The Savonetta Boys captain Alvin Jones struck the upright four minutes into play with a 35-yard free-kick that bounced beyond goalkeeper Tim Pallaks. Then in the 14th minute Briel Thomas rattled the Atlantico crossbar from distance to signal his team’s intentions after defender Nelson Benitez had put the visitors 1-0 ahead by the seventh minute.

Benitez blast proved too much for Connection goalkeeper Julani Archibald after Yefri Reyes headed Wuiswell Isea’s free-kick into Benitez’ path.

Atlantico’s fiery start soon cooled and Connection levelled the scores 1-1 in the 32nd minute when midfielder Jomal Williams got his body to a Kurt Frederick cross to put the ball into the back of Pallak’s net.

But both sides were later reduced to 10 men when Connection’s Shahdon Winchester and Atlantico’s Mateo Zazo were shown direct red cards in the 52nd minute by referee Clarke, who consulted assistant referee Zachari Zeegelarr following an off-the-ball brawl incident involving both players.

Winchester and Zazo, along with Atlantico goalscorer Benitez, who was red carded for a dangerous tackle on Connection substitute Jabari Mitchell with seven minutes left, will miss the remainder of the group stage with automatic two-game suspensions.

“We can’t really dwell on that,” said Connection head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier over the loss of the Winchester for the remaining group games. “The Moengotapoe player punched Shahdon (Winchester) and he retaliated. I must say I am disappointed but I have to now concentrate on who I have [available] and make sure we are ready for our next game.”

Atlantico were back in front 2-1 on 65 minutes after substitute Kerbi Rodriguez recovered from a slip in the centre of the area to regain control of a Leinner Perez cross before firing past Archibald.

However Fevrier’s side were back on level terms with a 2-2 score three minutes later. Jomal Williams executed a delightful chip to beat Pallak after Andre Toussaint had evaded two in midfield before threading a pass into the area.

Ten minutes later, Connection took the lead for the first time before sealing the victory in stoppage-time. St. Lucia international Frederick, ending with three assists on the night, fed a pass to Charles inside the area and the Grenadian struck into an open net after getting around Pallak.

Atlantico’s defence were in shambles again when another Frederick cross in the first minute of stoppage-time allowed Charles to complete his double and Connection’s 4-2 win.

Commenting on Charles’ double, Fevrier said, “Jamal is a young player on his first professional contract. Today he did well, but he still has a long way to go. He wants to learn and has the right attitude.  I think he will definitely improve.”

The Connection coach heaped praise on his players.

He said, “It was a really difficult game because we had to come from behind twice. I must give credit to my team for coming from behind and winning by two clear goals, convincingly in the end.

“Moengotapoe aren’t a bad team. They recently started a professional league and are already showing improvement.”

Fevrier, usually a cool figure on the bench in the domestic Digicel Pro League, paced the edge of the technical area for most of the second half on Wednesday night and one time found himself just inside the touchline.

“I had to be that extra player after Shahdon (Winchester) got sent off,” he explained. “The guys needed a lift and I felt I needed to be that extra player. It’s our first game and we had to win. It’s a short tournament—three games in five days—and I felt I needed to be out there urging and pushing the guys on. In the end it paid off.

“Our intention is to win the group. We play Moulien on Friday but we are aware that football is always on the day, no team are easy in modern football, so we have to be humble and come out again on Friday to do our job.”

Atlantico and Inter Moengoetapoe will meet from 5:30 pm on Friday at the Ato Boldon Stadium before W Connection take on Club Sportif Moulien from 7:45 pm.

W Connection thrash Moulien to set up virtual final with Moengo Tapoe.
ttproleague.com.

ATO BOLDON STADIUM, Couva—W Connection enjoyed a second half goal-feast on Friday night after coming from behind early in the game to trash Guadeloupe outfit Club Sportif Moulien 5-1.

Nineteen-year-old forward Jamal Charles equalised for Connection, after going behind in the third minute, before second half goals by Jomal Williams, Dimitrie Apai, Alvin Jones and substitute Malik St. Prix earned the Trinidadian club a comprehensive win.

The two-time Caribbean champions and last season’s runners-up W Connection (6 points) are at the top of Group One and one point away from securing a semi-final spot in the 2016 Caribbean Club Championship, while setting up a virtual final against Suriname powerhouse Inter Moengo Tapoe on the final day (Sunday) from 6:30 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Inter are also on 6 points but with a +2 goal-difference the Suriname team are second behind Connection (+5).

Inter, 3-2 winners over Moulien on Wednesday, had earlier edged Dominican Republic outfit Atlantico FC 1-0 courtesy a 31st minute scorcher from midfielder Gregory Pokie.

Despite end-to-end action, a depleted Atlantico, without defenders Nelson Benitez and Mateo Zazo who were red carded along with Connection forward Shahdon Winchester during the Savonetta Boys 4-2 win on Wednesday, failed to peg an equaliser, let alone a win.

Winger Leinner Perez created Atlantico’s best chance four minutes into the second period after dribbling past four Inter shirts in the area, but his effort crashed off a teammate with the right of Inter goalkeeper Tim Pallak exposed.

Inter’s midfielder and captain Cristian Casseres later preserved his side’s slim advantage in the fifth of eight stoppage-time minutes when he cleared midfielder Kerbi Rodriguez strike off the line.

Casseres and his teammates, including former W Connection striker Stefano Rijssel, will need nothing less than a win over Savonetta Boys on Sunday if they are to top the home-side for the Caribbean Club Championship semi-finals spot.

Connection, like their opening game on Wednesday against Atlantico, had to come from behind against Moulien and didn’t seem to mind.

“The game was still young,” said star Connection midfielder Jomal Williams after the game. “Although we went down a goal early it didn’t stop us from playing together as one and eventually we got a hold of the game and the goals started coming.

“It turned out a great game for us. We outclassed them (Moulien) by far.”

Richardson Petit had put Moulien 1-0 ahead after just three minutes. Petit fired past goalkeeper Julani Archibald off a cross from left winger Krismiller Bolmin, who linked with midfielder Sebastien Lobry for a quick exchange to make light work of Connection defender Daneil Cyrus.

But Jamal Charles, coming off his first ever goals for Connection – a game-winning double against Atlantico – levelled coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier’s men 1-1 on 7 minutes.

Charles, starting in absence of the suspended Winchester, was excellent in heading past Moulien goalkeeper Jordan Sennoaj at the back post off an Alvin Jones corner.

The Grenadian teenager had an excellent opening for his fourth goal of the tournament on 20 minutes but fluffed the effort with goalkeeper Sennoaj at his mercy.

Seconds later Charles miscued from the centre of the area following an attacking move involving Hughtun Hector and Jomal as Connection began to take control of the game.

However it was not until the 53rd minute that Connection took a 2-1 lead through Jomal who fired past Sennoaj for his third goal of the tournament in a raid on the visitors area.

Sennoaj, who made a number of saves in the first half including a superb one-handed shutout to deny Jomal, was unable to avoid the second half massacre.

Connection’s Surinamese forward Apai made it 3-1 in extraordinary fashion in the 67th minute by diving in to direct, off his chest, a left side Kurt Frederick cross past Sennoaj.

Three minutes later Connection were celebrating a 4-1 lead when captain Alvin Jones converted from the penalty spot after Jomal was brought down in the area by defender Cedric Vamur.

Connection completed the 5-1 scoring in the first minute of stoppage-time with substitute Malik St. Prix poking past Sennoaj from close-up to redeem himself after heading wide off a Frederick cross.

Fullback Frederick, who terrorised Moulien for the most of the second half with his runs, brilliant first touch, and crossing from the left, was denied a goal in stoppage-time by the Moulien goalie.

“The level of our performance was really good,” added the 21-year-old Jomal. “The tournament is coming along pretty well for us in getting the results we wanted from our first two games.

“We will have the same concentration going into the game against Inter Moengo Tapoe on Sunday. We know a draw will take us through but we want a win in securing the top spot,” ended the Connection midfielder.

Connection defeats Inter Meongo 3-1.
ttproleague.com.

Forwards Jamal Charles and Malik St. Prix each scored a goal during Sunday’s hard-fought effort by W Connection to defeat Suriname’s Inter Meongo Tapoe 3-1 and secure a spot in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship 2016 semi-finals, to be contested on April 29.

But it was midfielder Hughtun Hector, in only his second game back with the “Savonetta Boys” after five years, that erupted the Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad with a 30-yard rocket goal on 90 minutes.

The 31-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international Hector, who spent the last half decade in Vietnam with the V-League’s Song Lam Nghe An then Hanoi T&T, welcomed time and space in the middle to calibrate before blasting the ball into the top corner of goalkeeper Orbrendo Huiswoud for a 3-0 Connection lead.

“Hector has always been an intelligent player,” W Connection technical director/head coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier told ttproleague.com after the game. “He is a born and bred W Connection player having never played professionally with another club in Trinidad.”

Charles-Fevrier, though, was disappointed in the manner in which his side conceded in stoppage-time when Inter substitute Kareem Kwasie latched onto a head-on by a teammate before beating goalkeeper Julani Archibald from close up to pull back a consolation item for the visitors.

“The goal we conceded was a soft goal,” said the Connection coach. “Two of our players went for the same ball and as a result of that we had no cover, causing the goal. I was very disappointed especially at that time of the game. I would have liked the 3-0 score at that stage.

“Although they had just as much possession as us, they never created a clear-cut goal-scoring opportunity. They got a penalty which was an accidental handball.”

The longstanding Connection coach added, “Today’s game was about qualifying for the next round. To qualify we needed a win or a draw and we would have taken it anyhow.

“It was a hard game. I always knew it was going to be a hard game [against Inter Moengo Tapoe]. They have some very athletic and strong players and they worked very hard tonight. But we are a more experienced team than them, we are a more professional team, and I believe that’s why we were able to contain them and win the game.”

Connection completed Group 1 with maximum 9 points, while Inter Moengo Tapoe (6 points), Dominican Republic’s Atlantico FC (3 points) and Guadeloupe’s CS Moulien (0 points) finished second, third and fourth, respectively.

Atlantico defeated 9-man Moulien 4-0 in the earlier game of Sunday’s double-header to salvage some level of pride.

Atlantico forward Leinner Perez scored in either side of the break, netting in the 17th and 53rd minutes, before supplying a tricky feed to captain Cristian Casseres to score the Dominican’s third item on 59 minutes, moments after Moulien’s second half substitute Stephane Amadiah was ejected by a second yellow card.

Wuiswell Isea wrapped up Atlantico’s scoring in the 62nd minute by beating Moulien goalkeeper Kevin Ajax from distance. Moulien’s frustration boiled over 20 minutes later when defender and captain Felix Siar was shown his second yellow card of the game when he struck the face of Atlantico substitute forward Jose Arturo.

“We were the best team in all of the four teams and we deserve to be in the [semi-final] round,” added Charles-Fevrier, whose “Savonetta Boys” also defeated Atlantico 4-2 and Moulien 5-1.

Jamal Charles put Connection ahead 1-0 after ten minutes against Inter when he directed in a Kurt Frederick cross at goalkeeper Huiswoud’s near post for his fourth goal of the tournament.

The 19-year-old Grenadian Charles, who, previous to the 2016 Caribbean Club Championship, never scored a Connection goal, scored a game-winning double against Atlantico as a substitute and also scored the opening item against Moulien as a starting replacement for suspended forward Shahdon Winchester.

Winchester returned to play for Connection who were forced into a premature substitution against Inter after just 24 minutes when star midfielder Jomal Williams, with 3 goals in the tournament, walked off with what seemed a groin injury.

Meanwhile Inter were entirely without Suriname international and ex-W Connection forward Stefano Rijssel, who was suspended on cards accumulation. The visitors, though, were tenacious and threw everything at Connection but just couldn’t level the score, even from the penalty spot, after Charles’ opening item.

Connection’s 24-year-old St Kitts/Nevis international goalkeeper Julani Archibald, who produced a superb one-handed diving save to put behind an Emilio Limon strike in the 16th minute, made a world class penalty save in the 77 minute to deny Patrick Jimmy after Guyanese referee Sherwin Johnson ruled a handball against the “Savonetta Boys”’ captain Alvin Jones.

That failed attempt would later haunt Inter when 20-year-old Connection substitute Malik St. Prix, just one minute onto the pitch, made it 2-0 in the 81st minute. St. Lucia international Frederick, one of Connection’s top performers of the tournament, fired low from distance, only to find the boot of St. Prix who beat Huiswoud from inside the box for his second goal of the tournament before Hector made it 3-0.

Huiswoud, who earlier thwarted efforts by Jomal, his Suriname countryman Dimitrie Apai and Hector, was no match for latter’s 90th minute strike.

Apai, who missed the target by inches on three occasions, can consider himself unlucky not to get on the scoresheet but would have his chance again on the Caribbean stage in the final round as Connection attempts an eight Concacaf berth.

Connection, four-time Caribbean champions, must await the winners of Group 4 to know their semi-final opponent. Haiti’s America FC, Jamaica’s Arnett Gardens FC, Suriname’s SV Notch and hosts Club Atletico Pantoja will contest the group in Dominican Republic from March 2-6 with the top team advancing to meet Connection.

Defending champions Central FC will travel to Jamaica to compete in Group 3 (March 9-13) to be contested by hosts Montego Bay United and Cayman Islands team Scholars International SC. The winners will meet Group 2 winners Don Bosco FC of Haiti in the semi-final round on April 29. The semi-final round winners will advance into the final on May 1.

The final round will also determine the three Caribbean berths at the 2016/17 Concacaf Champions League.

That is his point.............player now coming back from injury being stretched into playing two 90mins games.

The only excuse i can see is the player insisting since he wants to prove his fitness to our National Team coach.  However, i still believe that this could have been done with less playing time.

ah love it!!

Central should not be throwing away so much..and Central defense is not really being tested. I need to see them play against better Opposition.

Central start Caribbean defence with a 6-0 crushing of Scholars International.
ttproleague.com.

Defending Caribbean Club champions Central FC have sent a warning to hosts Montego Bay United by drubbing 10-man Cayman Islands team Scholars International 6-0 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Jamaica on Friday night.

The win lifted Central atop the three-team Group 3 of the 2016 Caribbean Club Championship, ahead on goal difference and setting the stage for a mega clash on Sunday night at the same venue against Montego Bay United who whipped Scholars United 4-0 on Wednesday.

Prior to flying out to Jamaica, Central FC managing director and former Soca Warriors 2006 World Cup defender Brent Sancho said, “I would go as far as saying that whoever wins the (Montego Bay versus Central FC) game in Jamaica, will go on to be the Caribbean champions.”

Only the top team out of the group advances into the semi-final round. The two semi-final round winners and the third-place winners of the Club Championship will secure the three Caribbean berths at the 2016/17 Concacaf Champions League.

Veteran midfielder Jason Marcano, who has been recalled to the Trinidad and Tobago national team for the March 19 friendly international at Grenada, grabbed a second half, netting in the 64th and 91st minutes, for the “Couva Sharks”.

But Tobagonian defender Jamal Jack had opened the scoring from as early as the 2nd minute and on 16 minutes Ghanaian midfielder Michael Yaw Darko made it 2-0—a cushion the Dale Saunders-coached team took in at the break.

Sancho said Scholars had “parked the bus” making it difficult for the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League champions.

Sancho added that Central stuck at it and with the perseverance and some tactical changes in the second half, the “Couva Sharks” were able to achieve the healthy score line to move within a point of securing a semi-finals spot in the Caribbean Club Championship.

Midfielder Darren Mitchell and Mickaeel Jem Gordon joined fellow Tobagonian Jack on the scoresheet with goals 68th and 89th minutes, respectively.

Scholars International had a defender sent off on a second yellow card with 20 minutes remaining.

After the game Central posted on their Fan Club Facebook account that defender and new T&T national team call-up Andre Ettienne had picked up a suspected dislocated shoulder but Sancho cleared the air on Saturday morning, saying it wasn’t dislocated, dispelling doubts over the availability of the hard-tackling Ettienne for Sunday’s fixture against Montego Bay United.

Sancho however, expressed dissatisfaction in not being able to utilise Trinidad and Tobago winger Rundell Winchester, who travelled to Jamaica as part of Central’s 20-man squad. The 22-year-old Tobagonian has returned to Central following a loan stint United States club Portland Timbers B but for the past few weeks has been in the waiting lane for his international transfer certificate (ITC).

Only positive thing I can say, these guys (both teams) are young, and like to run back & forth. It like they have a 6th sense their pass attempts won't be good. Hard to believe these are some of the best players in the Caribbean. Must be the field. Eithier that or they can't handle the massive crowd. ;-0

Late Mitchell goal puts Central one win away from Concacaf Champions League spot.
ttproleague.com.

‘Couva Sharks’ to meet Haiti’s Don Bosco in a repeat of last season’s Caribbean Club Championship semis

Darren Mitchell scored with four minutes left to give defending champions Central FC a hard-fought 1-0 win over Jamaica League leaders Montego Bay United on Sunday to secure a place in the semi-final round of the 2016 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship where the “Couva Sharks” will meet Haiti’s Don Bosco in a repeat of last season’s semis.

A draw at the Montego Bay Sporting Complex in Jamaica would have also suffice with Central leading the three-team Group 3 on goal difference ahead of kick off, after Friday’s 6-0 hammering of Cayman Islands team Scholars International, who were defeated 4-0 by Montego Bay United on Wednesday.

But Mitchell scored his second Caribbean Club Championship goal of the current campaign in the 86th minute, hitting past former Joe Public and Jamaica international goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett from a left side Marcus Joseph cross to flatten the home side’s hopes of advancing into the semis.

Two minutes earlier Montego Bay United defender Winston Wilkinson saw red after picking up his second yellow card of the game for a challenge on Jason Marcano that sent the “Couva Sharks”’ midfielder crashing off the field and into the fourth official’s table.

Apart from a difficult game—something the Dale Saunders coached-Central had predicted—the “Couva Sharks” were forced to replace first choice goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams with Akel Clarke just beyond the half hour mark with a suspected shoulder injury, which the Trinidad and Tobago international picked up in the 20th minute.

However Central, Caribbean champions on their Club Championship debut in 2015, went on to become the second TT Pro League outfit to qualifying for this season’s semi-final round after W Connection, who topped Group 1 hosted in Trinidad in February.

The two semi-final round winners and the third-place winners of the Club Championship will secure the three Caribbean berths at the 2016/17 Concacaf Champions League.

Connection, multiple-time Caribbean champions and last season’s runners-up, completed their group with maximum 9 points with wins over Dominican Republic’s Atlantico FC (4-2), Guadeloupe’s CS Moulien (5-1) and Suriname’s Inter Moengo Tapoe (3-1) and will meet Jamaica’s Arnett Gardens in the semi-finals on April 29.

Arnett Gardens topped Group 4 hosted in Dominican Republic with wins over Haiti’s America FC (3-0), Suriname’s SV Notch (8-4) and home side Club Atletico Pantoja (1-0).

While Central’s semi-final opponents for a second consecutive time, Don Bosco FC, topped the three-team Group 2 in Haiti. The hosts defeated Bermuda’s Somerset Cricket Club FC (5-0) and Guadeloupe’s La Gauloise de Basse-Terre (3-1).

Last season Central, coached then by former England and Tottenham defender Terry Fenwick, needed penalties to defeat Don Bosco 3-1 following a goalless semi-final draw before edging 9-man W Connection in the final to lift the Caribbean crown.

Results

Montego Bay United 0 vs Central FC 1 (Darren Mitchell 86’)

Central FC line-up: Jan-Michael Williams (Akel Clarke 33rd minute); Kevon Villaroel, Kaydion Gabriel, Jamal Jack (Capt.), Andre Ettienne, Nathanial Garcia, Elijah Manners (Elton John 46th minute), Darren Mitchell, Sean De Silva, Jason Marcano, Marcus Joseph

Central and Connection head to Haiti for final round of Concacaf Champions League qualifying.
ttproleague.com.

Reigning Caribbean champions, Central FC, and last season’s runners-up, W Connection, will attempt to top the region for a second consecutive time when they contest the final round of the Caribbean Club Championship 2016 from April 29 to May 1 at the Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

W Connection, the most successful team in the competition, will tackle Jamaica’s Arnett Gardens from 4:30pm on Friday in semi-final one, before holders Central FC meet Haiti’s Don Bosco FC in semi-final two from 7pm – in a repeat of last season’s semi-final – after all four teams topped their respective groups in the first round.

Both semi-final round winners will secure berths at next season’s Concacaf Champions League 2016/17 while advancing to Sunday’s Caribbean Club Championship final from 7pm.

Meanwhile the defeated semi-finals must contest the third-place play-off on Sunday from 4:30pm to secure the third and final Caribbean berth at next season’s Concacaf Champions League.

Last season the “Couva Sharks”, during their debut run at the tournament, defeated Don Bosco 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw before edging Trinidadian rivals W Connection 2-1 in the final under former coach Terry Fenwick.

Central are now hoping to replicate their Caribbean success while Connection, outright Caribbean champions in 2006 and 2009, and joint winners in 2001, 2002 and 2013 after no final rounds were contested following group play, are hoping to add the Caribbean 2016 crown to their success this season which already includes the domestic First Citizens Cup and Toyota Classic titles.

Connection, inclusive of a 20-man squad (see below), and Central, inclusive of an 18-man squad, departed Trinidad on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, and will base at the Ibo Lele Hotel and Royal Oasis Hotel, respectively, in Port-au-Prince.

The Stuart Charles-Fevrier coached-Connection, also four-time Caribbean runners-up, enjoyed wins over Dominican Republic side Atlantico FC (4-2), Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien (5-1) and Suriname’s Inter Moengo Tapoe (3-1) when they hosted the Caribbean Club Championship 2016 Group 1 in Trinidad in February.

Central, now coached by former assistant coach Dale Saunders who is assisted by ex-Trinidad and Tobago internationals and 2006 World Cup members Stern John and Brent Sancho, who is also the club’s managing director, were also perfect in topping Group 3 contested in Jamaica in March with wins over Cayman Islands side Scholars International (6-0) and hosts Montego Bay United (1-0).

Don Bosco FC, hosted Group 2 in Haiti, and comfortably topped their group with wins over Bermuda side Somerset CC (5-0) and Guadeloupe’s La Gauloise de Basse-Terre (3-1), while Arnett Gardens topped Group 4 in Dominican Republic by defeating Haiti’s America FC (3-0), Suriname’s SV Notch (8-4) and host team Club Atletico Pantoja (1-0).

I believe this is the second year in a row we have two TnT clubs in the CFU final. However I hope to see at least one of our clubs progress to the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League. We need to close the success gap between our clubs and Central American clubs in the Champions League.

Any of TnT clubs good enough to beat the top Honduran or Costa Rican clubs? time will tell

We are all hoping for improve performances from both our teams in CCL. WHILE I thinks our guys have what it takes to make at least the final 8 at this moment, finances for our teams is still an issue. W Connection and DF maybe the exceptions when it comes to resources. But the way Central had to come by their finances to go to Haiti, tell us that a steady flow of money to participate in CL is as much as crucial as having great players and a good coach. But it is great to see the club cup is in TT for another year. Good luck to them.

W Connection and Central FC set up CFU final rematch as both clubs secure CONCACAF Champions League spots
ttproleague.com

Reigning champions Central FC and last season's runners-up W Connection will contest the 2016 final of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship – a rematch of last season's final – on Sunday at the Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

This after both Trinidadian clubs, Connection and Central, progressed from the Club Championship semi-final round on Friday at the same venue with wins over Jamaica's Arnett Gardens and hosts Don Bosco FC, respectively, to also qualify for next season's Concacaf Champions League 2016/17.

Connection, now into their seventh Club Championship final and are the most successful club in the tournament, were 2-0 winners over Arnett Gardens through first half goals from Alvin Jones and Shahdon Winchester.

Jones fired the “Savonetta Boys” ahead in only with 2nd minute of play before Winchester, following some good play by Jomal Williams, made it 2-0 in stoppage-time of the first half.

But Central, in a rematch of last season's semi-final against Don Bosco which needed penalty kicks to decide the winners, needed kicks from the penalty mark again to get past the Haitians after 120 minutes of play produced a 1-1 score.

Sean De Silva handed Central the lead in the third minute of extra time from a free kick but Don Bosco equalised through Kerlins Georges from the penalty spot in the 104th minute to send the game into the penalty shootout which the “Couva Sharks” won 4-2, thanks to two saves from goalkeeper Javon Sample who had replaced injured Akel Clarke during the second half of regular time.

Also on Sunday, Don Bosco and Arnett Gardens will battle in the Club Championship third place game to decide the third and final Caribbean berth into next season’s Concacaf Champions League.

Connection, who were defeated 2-1 in the final last season by debutants Central, were outright Caribbean champions in 2006 and 2009, and joint winners in 2001, 2002 and 2013 after no final rounds were contested following group play.

This season the Stuart Charles-Fevrier coached-Connection progressed from the group stage wins over Dominican Republic side Atlantico FC (4-2), Guadeloupe’s Club Sportif Moulien (5-1) and Suriname’s Inter Moengo Tapoe (3-1) when they hosted the Caribbean Club Championship 2016 Group 1 in Trinidad in February.

Problem is the Pro-League is so poorly monetized it can't afford to play its best players. If Joevin Jones, Shannon Gomez, Jerrel Britto, Mekeil Williams etc were still playing for Connection the results against the Central Americans would be better.

I suspect a large part of the results gap  fell to sub-par coaching/management/tactics. A few years back a big-name coach took the Pro-league champions to play some biscuit league team in Bermuda for CFU qualifiers, and got the surprise of his life wen they nearly cut we tail. Coach say he 'surprised' at how well they played. Meanwhile several of the same players who terrorized his defence that day were on the Bermuda team that helped kick us out of 2010 WC qualifying. A national coach should be able to connect simple dots...Dale Saunders looking good so far though. Central has no goals conceded. Rare for a T&T team.

Central FC crowned 2016 Caribbean Club Champions at the expense of W-Connection
Central FC Media

It was a game that had everything, yet sadly it could only be seen in Haiti.

The 2016 CFU Caribbean Club Championship final saw a repeat of last seasons Couva Classic final, this time held at the rainswept Stade Sylvio Cator Stadium in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The two Pro League rivals fought an epic battle in front of several thousand local spectators, and although the game was carried live on Haitian TV, no online stream was available.

This left both teams supporters glued to Facebook for updates relayed via text message.

The game began in nearly monsoon like conditions on the artificial turf of Haiti's national stadium. Central had not recorded a domestic victory over Connection since the first game of the season back in September when they lifted the Charity Shield.

Since then, Connection disappointed The Sharks in three league matches and bashed them 4-2 in the Lucozade Goal Shield semi final two weeks ago.

But it was Central who took the lead inside 10 minutes when Marcus Joseph converted from a corner.

Things became a lot tougher for the Savonetta Boys when Shahdon Winchester was judged to have elbowed Central defender Keion Goodridge and was awarded a straight red card. This was a bitter blow  for Connection as Winchester was a potent force, having scored the second goal on Friday that killed off Jamaica's Arnett Gardens in the semi final.

Yet being reduced to 10 men in the first half only seemed to make Connection more determined and within minutes they were awarded a penalty.  Up stepped Alvin Jones, Connection's talisman dead ball expert, to face young goalkeeper, Javon Sample. It looked like a David & Goliath situation. It was Jones who launched Connection into the lead with a second minute free kick in Fridays semi final.

Sample, who only turned 21 ten days ago started the tournament as Centrals third choice keeper despite captaining T&T's U20 team.

First choice keeper, Jan-Michael Williams injured his shoulder in the group match vs Montego Bay in Jamaica in March and will not play again this season.  Reserve keeper, Akel Clarke, a Guyanese national team goalkeeper had stepped up admirably to replace T&T's first choice custodian, but he suffered a knee ligament injury in Fridays semi final vs hosts Don Bosco.

Sample, who has been with Central since the clubs first season in 2012, jumped into the high pressure game and won the match for The Sharks with two saves in the penalty shoot out.

And it seemed that Sample maintained his composure under pressure again as he saved Alvin Jones effort.

The score remained 1-0 at half time, but there was the feeling that there was plenty more excitement to come.

Central were hunting for a second goal to put the game out of reach. Speedy midfielder Darren Mitchell missed a golden opportunity and fellow Tobagonian Jamal Jack had a decent shout for a penalty turned down by the ref.

In last years CFU final, Connection ended the game against Central with 9 men. And so it was this year as Alvin Jones' two footed tackle was penalised with a second yellow card.

The two man disadvantage for Connection left them vulnerable as they chased an equaliser and it was Central's maverick striker, Jason Marcano who reaped the reward. Marcano has found the net regularly all season, including a league hat trick last week against Club Sando.

While Connection fought bravely they couldn't overcome the Central midfield lead by the outstanding Leston Paul, the games eventual MVP.

This was the first ever “Couva Classic” played overseas, yet Central, however, did not feel at all charitable to their close neighbours and on the stroke of full time, Darren “Chucky” Mitchell hit home to end the game 3-0.

Central, fielding a team comprised entirely of Trinbagonians, lifted the Caribbeans top club trophy for a second year running. The only other team to achieve this was Puerto Rico Islanders who were allowed into the tournament even though they played their league football in the USA.

It was a testament to the strength of the TT Pro League that, yet again, two teams from T&T made it to the final. Eleven of the sixteen CFU finals have now been won by clubs from Trinidad & Tobago, and there have been 10 T&T runners up. Jamaican clubs have won the trophy 3 times and been runners up twice.

Perhaps more importantly, both T&T clubs qualify for the 2016 CONCACAF Champions League which has been restructured into groups of four for the qualifying rounds. While T&T can proudly boast of their domination in the Caribbean, the test will now be to escape from the group stages of the Champions League and challenge Central and North American giants on the big stage.
