Red Steel Wins Again
By Vinode Mamchan

Led by the Bravo brothers, Dwayne and Darren, the T&T Red Steel continued their resurgence in the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 tournament, with a 20-run victory over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. Darren slammed 40 off 15 balls to lead the Red Steel to 134 for five off 14 overs in a rain affected match. Set a revised target of 142 in 14 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis method, the Patriots fell short at 123 for seven.

The win carries the Red Steel to nine points from eight matchs and today, at 4.30 pm, they return to the Oval to face the Jamaica Tallawahs with the knowledge that a win will take them into the knockout phase.

Patriots were in the game until the tenth over but after a brilliant 11th over from Dwayne Bravo, the game was as good as over. The allrounder became the darling of the crowd as he grabbed two wickets and conceded only three runs in the over. With 25 runs needed in the final over, Jacques Kallis produced a beauty allowing only six runs.

Bravo finished with 3/15 off three overs and young left-arm spinner Derone Davis chipped in with three crucial scalps as well to cripple the Patriots. They have now completed their ten-match preliminary round campaign and will not progress to the knockout phase because all they could have garnered was eight points.

Earlier, Dwayne Bravo won the toss in sunshine and decided to take first strike on a dry pitch, looking to get the better part of it for batting. The consistent Kallis started to fire early with new opening partner William Perkins. Soon after they were cooled down by a persistent drizzle and the heavy outfield did not give them value for shots.

The Patriots were able to peg back the run scoring with some tight bowling after the powerplay and also grabbed Perkins for 15. The rain then came down and sent the players scurrying off with the score at 56 for one after nine overs. Kallis at that point was on 31.

When the rain allowed play to resume only five overs were left for the Red Steel to bat. Kallis was dismissed first ball after the resumption without adding to his score. He faced 29 balls and struck five fours. Darren Bravo then turned on the heat and it was party time at the Oval. The left-hander smashed some huge sixes that belied his small stature. He raced to 40  before being run out. He slapped five sixes and a four as he continued an amazing run which started in the previous match.

The last 62 runs from his unbeaten 80 against the Tridents came off 16 balls, which means that he has actually scored 100 runs from 31 balls. Towards the end, Cameron Delport played a wonderful cameo of 20 not out off six balls to take the score to 134 for five.
