The world’s best track and field athletes will gather at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon in March of 2016 to compete in the 16th IAAF World Indoor Championships. More than 600 athletes representing as many as 200 countries will participate in the biennial event.

This will be the first time the IAAF World Indoor Championships have been contested in the United States since the inaugural competition in Indianapolis in 1987. Athletes will compete in 13 men’s and women’s events over a three-day period, March 18-20, with medals awarded to the top three finishers in each event.

Team USA has been the most successful country at the IAAF World Indoor Championships with a total of 202 medals: 87 gold, 58 silver and 57 bronze. The U.S. will be looking to build on its strong performance at the 2014 meet in which it won eight gold medals, including Oregon Track Club Elite’s Ashton Eaton’s winning effort of 6,632 points in the heptathlon.

In terms of competitors, the biggest IAAF World Indoor Championships were held in Paris in 1997 with 712 athletes from 118 countries. The most countries represented were 171 at the 2012 meet in Istanbul, Turkey.

The facilities at the Oregon Convention Center will feature a new 200-meter IAAF-certified track. The 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships will be broadcast worldwide to an estimated audience of 140 million global viewers.

Cleopatra Borel (Shot Put) & Lalonde Gordon (Quarter-miler) in TTO World Indoors Team.

Double Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon and Pan American Games champion Cleopatra Borel have been named in TT ’s nine-member team for the 17th IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Portland, Oregon, USA from March 17-20.

Gordon is expected to line up in the men’s 400m after running under the 46.70 seconds indoor standard no less than three times with his season’s best of 45.51, the second fastest time in the world. Gordon will be competing in his third World Indoor Championships and will hoping to improve on his fifth place finish in the 2014 final. The New Yorkbased sprinter is one of three local quarter-milers to go quicker than the standard with national indoor record holder Deon Lendore (45.56) and Jarrin Solomon (46.43) the other qualifiers.
Lendore is expected to get the nod to run with Gordon in Portland in his first World Indoors. His time is the third fastest in the world.

The trio is be joined by Ade Alleyne- Forte and Machel Cedenio to compete in the 4x400m event where TT will be looking to improve on the bronze won in 2012.

Mikel Thomas will line up in the men’s 60m hurdles. The 2015 Pan American Games silver medallist was quicker than the 7.72 standard with his 7.67 personal best on March 4. Rondel Sorillo is slated to contest the men’s 60m flat. Sorillo’s qualifying best of 6.61 set on January 23 is superior to the standard of 6.65.

Veteran thrower Cleopatra Borel has been given the nod for her fifth World Indoors. Since debuting at the 2004 event, Borel has finished 7th at the 2006 and 2008 editions.

Though she has not competed on the indoor circuit for 2016, Borel qualified by the outdoor route where she has gone over the 18.10 outdoor standard with 19.26 in July last year. In-form sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye is TT ’s representative for the women’s 60m.

Fresh from equalling her national record mark of 7.10 on March 5, Ahye will be aiming to improve on her sixth-place finish in the final at the last World Indoors in Sopot, Poland in 2014.

I was hoping KAB would be on the team since she ran much better than the qualifying standard of 7.32 with her 7.20 in the 60m in Baton Rouge, LA last month. However with MLA currently in 7.10 form I think we should be well represented in the Women's 60m event and if all goes well MLA should make the final and be pressing for a medal.

This time round we have a team of 9 athletes. Can anyone recall if we have ever had a team this big or bigger which took part in the World Indoors Championships in the past?

Anyway ready now and wishing all our team members the very best in Portland!! :beermug:

I reckon we have a decent chance of medalling in all the events our athletes are entered in but our Men's 4x400m relay team seem to have our best chance at mining gold if all the team members are firing on all cylinders and they all run their legs in the right order and with the right strategy.

According to track alerts Kelly Ann and Ayanna Alexander have been added to the World indoor team.

I'm going to go in with no expectations since there are a lot of ladies ahead of her who are well raced. My prediction:

1 Dafne Schippers
2 Barbara Pierre
3 Elaine Thompson
4 Marie Talou

Scrap the rest it's too hard to decide

I would like to see both of our girls in the final and at least one medalist, but I think this is reasonable. I wouldn't say that Elaine is the best bet for 3rd but I'm basing that off of coach Francis' ability to ready his female sprinters for the big stage. I have hope though because anything can happen on any given day. Things don't always go to form/script.

Kelly-Ann Baptiste and Ayanna Alexander have been included in Trinidad and Tobago team for the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships, set for Portland, Oregon, USA from March 17-20.

Baptiste, a double World Outdoor Championships bronze medallist, will join Michelle-Lee Ahye in the women's 60m while Alexander will compete in the women's triple jump. Baptiste attained the World Indoor qualifying standard of 7.32secs, 7.20 achieved on February 19.

The former national 60m indoor record holder is currently ranked 33rd in the World. Baptiste will be making her World Indoor debut. She was not named in the original nine member team. NAAA president and team manager Ephraim Serrette said Baptiste originally was not available for the the World Indoors but her coach Ato Boldon has since declared she has decided to compete.

Alexander will also be competing in her maiden first World Indoors. The 2010/2014 Commonwealth Games  medallist gained a place in Portland from the IAAF although she did not achieved the World Indoor barrier of 14.30m.

However, with the recent change in IAAF World Championships selection procedure, the top sixteen athletes available after the deadline for qualification for the World Indoor Champs has passed with be eligible to compete. Alexander got the invitation as her season's best of 13.70m is among the top sixteen athletes available for Portland.

Charles Joseph will serve a coach and Zephyrinus NIcholas as physiotherapist.
The team will depart on March 16.

Michelle-Lee Ahye (right) competing in 60m Dash versus top sprinters Schippers & Thompson.

Can anyone stop Dafne Schippers? That is the question which lingers over the battle for sprint supremacy in Portland, with the Dutch speedster a worthy favourite to take her first title at the IAAF World Indoor Championships.

The 23-year-old former heptathlete has been a revelation since narrowing her focus to sprinting in recent seasons, and she has been imperious through the opening months of 2016, taking wins over 60m in Karlsruhe (7.08), Berlin (7.00) and Glasgow (7.10). More recently, Schippers trounced the field at the Dutch Championships, her time of 7.03 again proving she has a key component needed to win championship titles: consistency.

Recent history suggests a time in the region of 7.00 is required to win the world indoor title, and only two athletes have threatened that illustrious barrier all season. The second of those is USA's Barbara Pierre, who rocketed out of the blocks and held her form brilliantly to take the US title in a personal best of 7.00 last weekend. The race for the gold, barring a massive upset, should rest between Pierre and Schippers.

Marie Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast took a large chunk off her personal best when running 7.06 behind Schippers in Berlin. She backed that up with a trio of wins on the French indoor circuit, form that gives her a strong chance of winning her first medal at a global championship.

The European challenge is led by Germany’s Tatjana Pinto along with British duo Asha Philip and Dina Asher-Smith. Pinto is the fourth fastest in the world this year, having run a personal best of 7.07 to win the German indoor title last month. Of the British pair, Philip looks the most likely to challenge for the title after recording a convincing win at their national championships in Sheffield, running 7.10 to Asher-Smith’s 7.15.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye looks the strongest of the Caribbean entrants. The 23-year-old equalled her own national record of 7.10 when winning in Jablonec earlier this month, and looks capable of improving on her fifth-place finish at this event two years ago.

The battle to be crowned the fastest man in Portland will be intense and will feature a mix of veteran and up-and-coming sprinters.

Jamaica has won the past three women’s 60m titles but – somewhat surprisingly given their depth and dominance – no man from that country has ever achieved such an accolade. Asafa Powell will try to change that in Portland, having recorded the fastest time this year of all the entrants.

Evergreen Kim Collins will return to the World Indoor Championships for the first time since 2008. Twice a silver medallist, in 2003 and 2008, the St Kitts and Nevis sprinter has shown impressive form this year by running 6.54 of faster five times this winter, including a season’s best of 6.51. But in Glasgow, his most recent outing, he pulled up towards the end of the race with cramp and hasn’t competed since.

World bronze medallist Trayvon Bromell, US champion and 2014 world indoor silver medallist Marvin Bracy and World Indoor Tour winner Mike Rodgers are hoping to bring the men’s 60m title back to the host nation for the first time since 2012.

With Richard Kilty not defending his crown, despite posting the fourth-fastest time of the year (6.50), James Dasaolu and Sean Andrew Robertson will carry the British hopes in Portland.

China’s World Championships finalist Su Bingtian should also be in the mix for the top places. Bingtian missed a medal in Sopot by three thousandths of a second.

The men’s 400m promises another mouth-watering final with top quarter-milers ready to show their speed and tactics over the two-lap race.

Czech Republic’s Pavel Maslak has been preparing well for his title defence as shown with his 46.02 victory at the Glasgow Grand Prix.

A trio of Caribbean men are ready to leave their mark at the Oregon Convention Center. Grenada’s Bralon Taplin, who has posted the two fastest times in the world this season, wants to emulate his compatriot Alleyne Francique, who won world indoor 400m titles in 2004 and 2006.

Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon and teammate Deon Lendore will be aiming to place Trinidad and Tobago on the podium. Gordon wants to erase his disappointment from two years ago when he failed to get a medal, finishing fifth, after arriving in Sopot as that season's fastest man on the entry list.

The host nation’s duo of Vernon Norwood and Kyle Clemons also carry big hopes to win USA’s first world indoor 400m title since Tyree Washington’s victory in 2003.

Since his first indoor race last year when he set an Asian record of 45.39, Qatari teenager Abdalelah Haroun has never been beaten on the boards. Last month he broke the world indoor 500m best and then won the Asian indoor title three days later. He could be set to become the youngest ever finalist, medallist or champion in the 400m at the World Indoors.

Present in every final since 2008, including the 2012 win in a championships record of 45.11, Nery Brenes of Costa Rica should also be contending for the top places.

Portland may well be a third time lucky for Pascal Martinot-Lagarde. Bronze medallist in 2012 and runner-up in 2014, the tall Frenchman hopes to finally achieve the first 60m hurdles gold for his country since Stephane Caristan won at the World Indoor Games in Paris in 1985.

Martinot-Lagarde set a season’s best of 7.47 in winning the French title ahead of Dimitri Bascou, who set a national record and world-leading 7.41 two weeks earlier in Berlin. Bascou will also be in Portland, but he withdrew from some competitions last month with hamstring pain and so might not be at his absolute best.

Omar McLeod posted the second-fastest time this winter (7.46) at the Millrose Games and will aim to become the second Jamaican man to reach the podium in the sprint hurdles, 12 years after Maurice Wignall took bronze in Budapest.

National champion Jarret Eaton (7.52) and Spencer Adams (7.58) want to keep the US on top as Omo Osaghae did two years ago in Sopot.

Hungarian record-holder Balazs Baji (7.55), Barbados’ Greggmar Swift (7.58) and Kuwait’s Asian indoor champion Abdulaziz Al-Mandeel (7.60) will also be vying for a place among the top three.

Yulimar Rojas, still just 20, has caught the eye this winter with a world-leading mark of 14.69m in January and then 14.63m last month, both competitions coming in Madrid but at different venues.

Without doubt, the Spanish capital’s helpful altitude was an advantage in the Venezuelan flying out to these prodigious distances but last year’s South American champion will go to Portland carrying her country’s hopes to get its first ever medal – and if it’s gold then she’ll also be the youngest ever winner in this event – in the history of the IAAF World Indoor Championships.

Despite her international inexperience, she can at least draw on the knowledge of her coach, the famous Cuban long jumper Ivan Pedroso, who won at the IAAF World Indoor Championships on five consecutive appearances between 1993 and 2001.

“I’m still learning the event and I’m still very new to everything," said Rojas, who will be Venezuela's sole female athlete in Portland. "I only started with this event less than two years ago after being a high jumper and long jumper before that, but since I started working with Ivan at the start of last autumn it has made a huge difference.

“And yes, I’ll be picking his brains about the World Indoor Championships before going to Portland,” she joked.

A long way behind Rojas on the 2016 world indoor list, the next best entrant is Germany’s Kristin Gierisch, who has a best this year of 14.29m.

Other women who have jumped 14.20m or farther this winter are Ityna Vaskouskaya of Belarus, Greece’s Paraskevi Papahristou and Finland’s Kristiina Makela.

It’s highly likely that there will be some new names among the people climbing the podium in this event as none of the top five have ever won a World Indoor Championships medal before.

New Zealand’s Valerie Adams has dominated the shot put for the best part of a decade, but the IAAF World Indoor Championships Portland 2016 could be her toughest championships to date.

The double Olympic gold medallist and three-time world champion had surgery at the end of 2014, which delayed her start to 2015. Knowing she wasn’t at her best, her five-year winning streak came to an end in her first competition of last year. She ended the season with a season’s best of 18.79m, having been beaten in three of her four competitions.

But already this year, with just two competitions under her belt, Adams is in much better form. She recently won at the New Zealand Championships with 19.43m and she will take great confidence from the fact that she improved with almost every round in that competition.

Until recently, that was the best throw in the world this year. But last weekend world bronze medallist Michelle Carter booked her spot on the host nation’s team by winning the US indoor title with 19.49m.

In a quest to become the USA’s first senior global champion in the women’s shot put, Carter will get a boost from the memories of beating Adams three times last year.

Behind this year’s two 19-metre throwers, the field is closely matched. European indoor silver medallist Yuliya Leantsiuk of Belarus has a best this year of 18.68m, while USA’s 2011 world bronze medallist Jillian Camarena-Williams finished second to Carter at the US Indoor Championships with a season’s best of 18.64m.

Anita Marton produced indoor and outdoor Hungarian records at last year’s major championships, winning the European indoor title with 19.23m and throwing 19.48m to finish fourth at the World Championships. Her best this year is 18.43m, but given her ability to peak when it matters most, she may well improve on that in Portland.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Cleopatra Borel is the oldest in the field and is yet to compete in 2016, but cannot be discounted. An Olympic finalist back in 2004, the 36-year-old could take her first global medal if she is able to reproduce her 19-metre form.

Cleopatra Borel is a model of concentration as she prepares to throw on opening day of IAAF World Champs, in Beijing. Borel finished 12th in women’s shot put final after picking up an injury.

The United States closed the IAAF World Indoor Championships Sopot 2014 on a high note by breaking the world indoor 4x400m record with 3:02.13 and they will want to display a similar performance in front of their home crowd in Portland.

Jamaica, the only country to have ever dethroned the USA at the World Indoors, in 2003 and 2004, will be looking to improve on their bronze medal from two years ago.

After missing the 2014 edition, Trinidad and Tobago is back with a stellar squad that includes Lalonde Gordon, Deon Lendore and Machel Cedenio, who led their country to a silver medal and national record at the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015. Jarrin Solomon, who anchored the team to bronze at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, completes this year’s quartet.

Olympic champions Bahamas should also be in the battle for the medals as well as Europe’s only entry, Belgium. Guyana, Nigeria and South Africa are the other teams entered.

Lalonde Gordon, 2nd fastest in the World Indoors over 400m for 2016

Lalonde Gordon and Deon Lendore are expected to lead Trinidad and Tobago into battle at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon, USA, today. Both quarter-milers will contest the opening round of the men's 400 metres event, scheduled to start at 2.45pm (TT time).

Gordon is the second fastest man in the world this year in the indoor 400 with a 45.51 seconds run, while Lendore is third on the global list at 45.56. Grenada's Bralon Taplin is the world-leader with a 45.20 clocking, and will carry the favourite's tag.

Czech Republic’s Pavel Maslak will defend his world title. In addition to Gordon, Lendore and Taplin, the list of challengers for Maslak’s crown includes American champion Vernon Norwood, 19-year-old Qatari Abdalelah Haroun, Jamaica’s Fitzroy Dunkley and Bahamian Michael Mathieu.

The semifinal round of the men’s 400m takes place from 10.45 tonight, while the final is scheduled for tomorrow night.

Rondel Sorrillo is the lone T&T entrant in the men’s 60m dash. The opening round starts at 5.20 this afternoon, with the semifinal round scheduled for 9pm and the final for 11.40.

Michelle-Lee Ahye and Kelly-Ann Baptiste will represent the Red, White and Black in tomorrow’s women’s 60m event. The 2015 Sportswoman of the Year, Cleopatra Borel will do battle in the women’s shot put.

Ayanna Alexander is listed for the women’s triple jump. And Mikel Thomas competes in the men’s 60m hurdles.

T&T will also be on show in the men’s 4x400m heats. The quartet will be chosen from Gordon, Lendore, Jarrin Solomon, Machel Cedenio and Ade Alleyne-Forte.

Good that yuh keeping us updated with information about the Trini athletes. But the big story is Powell's 6.44. Not Sorrillo's 6.6x.

Powell even eased up in the end. He is definitely in form to set another RECORD tonight.

Here is Startlists for Men's 60m Semis featuring TTO's Sorrillo later this evening. Sorrillo has the 3rd  fastest PB in his Semi so should at least place in the top 3 if he can run his PB or better in his Semi. Wishing him all the best and qualification for the final! He needs to place in the top 2 in his Semi to secure a spot in the Final...

Disappointing performance from Sorrillo in his 60m Semi-final (6.68), he ran slower in his Semi than he did in the Heats and should be pretty disappointed with his own performance. If he was able to improve and run near his PB he could have made it onto the final.

Both Lendore and Gordon thru to the 400m Final but won't be getting either of the two best lanes on the outside because they could not win their Semifinal. Taplin ran the best time yet again and looks like he still has more in the tank. Whoever wins the Final has to start the 2nd lap ahead of Taplin.

Well based on these results, it looks like Maslak or Haroun in lane 6, Taplin in 5, Maslak or Haroun in 4, Lendore in 3, Gordon in 2 (due to his 3rd place, even though he ran faster than Lendore) and the Kenyan in 1.

I am assuming/hoping Lendore and Gordon were gauging their efforts in the heats and semis given they are not in the kind of shape that Taplin is in. Taplin however may or may not have run himself too hard in the first 2 rounds (like Asafa).

I suspect the first 200m in the final will be run too hard with Taplin, Haroun, Maslak, and the Kenyan (inexperience or over-confidence) charging for the break.

Lendore and Gordon may not be fit enough to go that hard and maintain the lead to the end, so their best tactics might be to concede at the break, and instead run an impeded path in lane 2 but stay very close to the top 2-3 through 250m, then make their move on the back straight (as the leaders catch their breath from an overly fast first 200m), then separate and hold on for a medal position, whatever it may be.

Good luck to them both.

I just checked the 400m Final Startlist.
Lendore got lane 4 which is what I expected for his 2nd place in his Semi but Gordon got lane 1 which is the worst possible lane of all the lanes especially for someone of his height. Gordon really got a raw deal with the worst lane especially since he was the 4th fastest in the Semis.
Medallists are most likely to come from lanes 3 to 6 and the winner will need to get to the bell in front of the pack.

We run the Men's 4x4 earlier in the day tomorrow before the 400m final and this is where we made another dotish management decision by not bringing along Renny Quow as part of our relay squad. We only came to Portland with a 5-man 4x4 relay squad (Lalonde Gordon, Deon Lendore, Jarrin Solomon, Machel Cedenio, Ade Alleyne-Forte) when teams are allowed 6 members which means one of our 400m finalists will still need to run in the 4x4 relay heats and won't be able to rest most of the day in preparation for the final. Our TTO team management are still making short-sighted management decisions which need to be eliminated at this level if we want to maximize our chances of winning a gold medal. I wonder if Sorrillo can run a decent 400m leg in the 4x4 Heats so that both Gordon and Lendore can be rested for the 400m Final?

I won't be surprised if Brommel beat Asafa in the 100 final. Should be close race eh

See I know it! This youth will be dynamic in the near future. He is younger than 22.

I may not be as quick to condemn without more information - other than Lendore and Gordon, Solomon and Alleyne-Forte are the only other two 400m men with registered 400m times, the latter a 46.99. Who knows if Quow has any health issues (slight injuries), whether he declined based on where he is in his training, or simply gauging his effort in an Olympic year. I doubt any sane-minded selector would have overlooked Quow. Cedenio made himself available so maybe a meet at this point gives him a reference for where he is in his training. The recurring issue however is depth of quality 400m talent, we do not have the luxury of having a "secondary" corp to readily draw from.

Regarding the relay I would have included a Jehue Gordon if he is fit enough to run at this level in March. Don't think Sorillo would be of any help with the tough qualification standard (1st 2 teams and fastest 2 losers) given that Bahamas and Belgium are in our heat with some fresh runners who neither featured in the heats nor semis. For Lendore this should not be different to what he was faced with at an SEC or NCAA meet where he did even more with indoor 200m duty, yet would still run 45.1 in the individual and anchor impressively in the relay. However as a pro, he may not have the same level of fitness at this point of the year as he did at Texas A&M, in order to be in a fresher/healthier position come outdoors.

Trinidad and Tobago sprinters Michelle-Lee Ahye and Kelly-Ann Baptiste will challenge for women's 60 metres honours at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon, USA, today.

At 2.40 p.m. (TT time), Baptiste will face the starter in the opening first round heat. Ahye will run at 2.58 in heat four. The semis and final take place tonight. Also on show tonight will be Mikel Thomas in the men's 60m hurdles preliminaries and Cleopatra Borel in the women's shot put.

Earlier today, Ayanna Alexander competes in the women’s triple jump. The event is scheduled to start at 2.37pm. And at 3.40, T&T will do battle in the qualifying round of the men’s 4x400m.

After press time, last night, Deon Lendore and Lalonde Gordon were on the track, bidding for berths in tonight’s men’s 400m final. Lendore was drawn in the first semifinal heat, and Gordon in the second.

In the opening round, yesterday, Lendore won heat one in 46.38 seconds, forcing Kenyan Boniface Mweresa to settle for second spot in 46.44. Gordon was the class of the field in heat two, getting home in 46.72 seconds to finish ahead of Jamaica’s Fitzroy Dunkley (46.83).

Lendore was the third fastest qualifier, behind Qatar’s Abdalelah Haroun, the winner of heat four in 46.15 seconds, and Grenadian Bralon Taplin (46.24). Gordon was eighth fastest.

Rondel Sorrillo was in action in the men’s 60m semis, after press time last night, after finishing third in heat seven in 6.64 seconds. American Marvin Bracy was first home in 6.57, while second spot went to Japan’s Yoshihide Kiryu (6.59).

Jamaica’s Asafa Powell led all qualifiers into the semifinal round with a sizzling 6.44 seconds dash in heat five.

The men’s 60m final was contested late last night.

Michelle-Lee Ahye on start line for 60m Dash at IAAF World Indoor Champs 2016

Trinidad and Tobago will bid to finish on a high at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon, USA, today.

Lalonde Gordon, Jarrin Solomon, Deon Lendore and Machel Cedenio are expected to line up in the men’s 4x400 metres final, scheduled for 5.50pm (TT time). With Gordon and Lendore among the six qualifiers for the individual 400m final, contested after press time last night, Rondel Sorrillo and Ade Alleyne-Forte came into the team for yesterday’s 4x4 qualifying heat. Sorrillo, Solomon, Alleyne-Forte and Cedenio combined for third spot in three minutes, 07.83 seconds, progressing to the championship race as a “fastest loser”. Belgium (3:07.39) and Bahamas (3:07.55) secured the two automatic berths up for grabs in the race.
Late on Friday, Lendore clocked 46.23 seconds to finish second in the opening 400m semi-final heat, behind Grenada’s Bralon Taplin, the winner in 45.38, and ahead of Kenyan Boniface Mweresa (46.33). All three quartermilers advanced to the final.

In the second semi, Gordon finished third in 46.03 to claim his spot in the championship race. Defending champion Pavel Maslak of the Czech Republic won the heat in 45.71, the same time recorded by second-placed Qatari Abdalelah Haroun.

T&T sprinters, Michelle-Lee Ahye and Kelly-Ann Baptiste were in action after press time last night in the women’s 60m semis. They were both hoping to line up in the final a couple hours later.

Ahye was on fire in the fourth of six first round heats, yesterday. She won the race in 7.09 seconds to improve on the 7.10 national record she established in 2014 and equalled earlier this month. Baptiste clocked 7.20 seconds to finish third in the opening heat, advancing automatically to the semi-final round.
Ahye and Jamaican Elaine Thompson were second fastest in the heats at 7.09, two-hundredths of a second slower than American Barbara Pierre.

Ayanna Alexander was unable to produce a legal effort in yesterday’s women’s triple jump event, the T&T athlete fouling on all three attempts. Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas (14.41m), German Kristin Gierisch (14.30m) and Greek Paraskevi Papahristou (14.15m) earned gold, silver and bronze, respectively.

On Friday night, Sorrillo bowed out of the men’s 60m event when he finished sixth in the first semi-final in 6.68 seconds.

Asafa Powell was tipped for gold after producing a Central American and Caribbean (CAC) record time of 6.44 seconds in the first round and matching it in the semis. But in true Powell style, the Jamaican could not deliver the knockout punch, and had to settle for silver in 6.50. He finished behind American Trayvon Bromell, the gold medallist in 6.47, and just ahead of Barbadian bronze medallist Ramon Gittens, who established a new national record of 6.51.

After press time, last night, Cleopatra Borel competed in the women’s shot put. And in another late event, Mikel Thomas faced the starter in the fourth and final men’s 60m hurdles first round heat. The semis and final are on today.

Michelle-Lee Ahye (centre) versus her rivals in 60m Dash at IAAF World Indoor Champs 2016

T&T sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye set a new national record of 7.09 seconds to make it into the semi-finals of the women’s 60 metres at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at the Oregon Convention Centre in Portland, USA, yesterday.

Ahye won heat four with ease, finishing ahead of Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith (7.12) and Gloria Hooper of Italy, who ran a personal best of 7.29 to take the final automatic qualification spot.

“I’m very happy about it. I was expecting it to happen, but not in the first round,” Ahye was quoted saying on the IAAF website.

Kelly-Ann Baptiste ran her season’s best 7.20 to finish third in the first heat of the dash which was good enough to take her into the semi-finals and hopefully into the final. Both races were scheduled for last night.

Quartermilers Deon Lendore and Lalonde Gordon both advance to the final of the men’s 400m event. Lendore crossed second in the first semi-final in a time of 46.23. He followed Grenadian Bralon Taplin (45.38) to the line with Kenya’s Boniface Mweresa running a season’s best of 46.33 to take the third and the final qualification spot.

Gordon held on for third in the second semi-final in a time of 46:03 to nab his place in the final.  He was also quoted as saying afterwards: “There’s still work to do.” With both Gordon and Lendore making the finals of the men's 400m dash, which was set for late last night, the quartet of Rondell Sorrillo, Jarrin Solomon, Ade Alleynne Forte and Machel Cedenio, in that order did well to advance to the final of the men's 4x400m relay when they finished third in heat one in a time of 3:07.83. The final is set for this evening.

Sorrillo failed to progress out of the 60m event, placing sixth in 6.68 in the first semifinals heat. Eventual winner was Trayvon Bromell, who became the first US athlete to claim the men’s world indoor 60m title in six years with a personal best of 6.47.

Bromell, who almost didn't make it through to the final at last weekend's US Indoor Championships after finishing fourth in his semifinal, was the first man out of the blocks in lane three and maintained his lead throughout to prevail over Jamaica’s Asafa Powell (6.50) and Ramon Gittens of Barbados (6.51), respectively.

Over on the field, Ayanna Alexander fouled on all three her attempts in the women’s triple jump event. Yulimar Rojas only got in one valid jump but it was all that was needed for the Spain-based jumper, coached by Cuban long jump great Ivan Pedroso, to get Venezuela’s first world indoor title. Her second round effort of 14.41m notched up her country’s first medal at this competition of any hue.

Late last night, “Sportswoman of the Year” Cleopatra Borel was to compete in the final of the women's shot put and hurdler Mikel Thomas will be hoping to clear all his hurdles to get into the semifinals when he was to run in lane two of heat four.

Michelle-Lee Ahye (lane 4) versus her rivals Elaine Thompson (lane 3), Dafne Schippers (5) and Barbara Pierre (lane 6) at IAAF World Indoor Champs 2016 06

PORTLAND - Elaine Thompson won Jamaica's second sprint medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at Portland 2016, while Deon Lendore of Trinidad and Tobago bagged bronze in the men's 400m final on Saturday's Day 3.

Thompson, the world outdoor 200m silver medalist from Beijing last year, raced home in 7.06 seconds to take third place in the women's 60m dash behind American Barbara Pierre, who won the title in 7.02secs.

Pre-championships gold medal favourite Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands took the silver medal in 7.04secs.

Meanwhile, Lendore added to the Caribbean medal tally on day three after he captured a bronze medal in the men's 400m final.

The Trinidad and Tobago representative posted a time of 46.17 to finish behind Pavel Maslak (CZE), who successfully defended his world indoor title with a time of 45.44 and Abdalelah Haroun (QAT), who ran 45.59 for the silver.

In the women's 400m final, Jamaica's Stephenie Ann McPherson finished fourth in 52.20 after she got trapped on the inside of lane one on the final lap and was unable to overtake anyone.

The event went to Oluwakemi Adekoya of Bahrain, who went wire-to-wire to take the victory in 51.45 ahead of Americans Ashley Spencer (51.72) and Quanera Hayes (51.76).

In qualifying round action on Saturday's third day, Jamaica's Omar McLeod booked his place in the semi-final of the men's 60m hurdles after winning his heat with the joint second fastest time of the round in 7.58 seconds.

Shane Brathwaite (7.68) from Barbados and Mikel Thomas (7.72) of Trinidad and Tobago also made it into the semis.

Jamaica (3:07.30), Bahamas (3:07.55) and Trinidad and Tobago (3:07.83) all booked their spots in the final of the men's 4x400m relay.

In action in the field events, Cleopatra Borel of Trinidad and Tobago heaved a season's best of 18.38m to finish fourth in the women's Shot Put, while Kurt Felix of Grenada set a new national indoor record with 5986 points when finishing sixth behind American Ashton Eaton in the men's Heptathlon.

The IAAF world indoor championships will conclude Sunday afternoon.

Wow, the 4x400m relay made it to the final running Sorillo like you suggested SocaPro.
Luckily there were only 7 teams with just one team to eliminate in SAF.
We will most likely start in lane 1 in a disadvantaged position.

No cedenio in the final, but we managed 3rd in a new NR of 3:05:51. The lane draw killed us more than anything else imo.

On the final day of the global meet, yesterday, Lendore anchored Trinidad and Tobago to third spot in the men’s 4x400 metres final in a national indoor record time of three minutes, 05.51 seconds. United States produced a dominant performance, capturing gold in 3:02.45, well ahead of Bahamas, silver medallists in 3:04.75. The Bahamians also established a new national indoor record.

Jarrin Solomon, Lalonde Gordon and Ade Alleyne-Forte, in that order, ran the first three legs for T&T, setting the stage for the record run.

The 4x4 bronze was T&T’s third in the 31-year history of the meet, emulating the third-place finishes of the 1993 and 2012 teams. Gordon and Solomon were also members of the 2012 quartet. T&T’s all-time IAAF World Indoor Championship haul is five—four bronze medals and a solitary silver.

Double bronze in Portland represented the country’s first-ever multiple medal haul at the global meet. The two bronze medals earned T&T joint-25th spot on the medal table with Greece and Kenya. United States finished first with 13 gold medals, six silver and four bronze. Ethiopia (two gold, two silver, one bronze), France (one gold, one silver, two bronze) and Jamaica (one gold, one silver, one bronze) were second, third and fourth, respectively.

T&T secured 12th spot on the placing table with 25 points. The Americans were runaway winners, accumulating 249 points for a huge cushion on second-placed Ethiopia (56). Great Britain (39) finished third, ahead of Poland (33) and Jamaica (32).

Late on Saturday, Lendore entered the history books, becoming only the second IAAF World Indoor Championship individual medallist from T&T. The 23-year-old quartermiler clocked 46.17 seconds for bronze in the men’s 400m.

Czech Republic’s Pavel Maslak stopped the clock at 45.44 seconds to retain his title, while silver went to 19-year-old Qatari Abdalelah Haroun in 45.59.

Lendore was in third spot after 200 metres. He slipped to fourth late in the race, but ran past Grenadian Bralon Taplin near the end to secure the bronze. Gordon, the other T&T athlete in the championship race, struggled from the start and was never able to recover, getting to the line in 47.62 seconds to finish sixth and last.

Before Lendore’s bronze, Ian Morris was the country’s only individual medallist at the global indoor championship. Morris earned men’s 400m silver in 1989, in Budapest, Hungary.

“Medalling individually,” said Lendore, after Saturday’s final, “is always better than the relay even though relay medalling is good. You always want to do that, as an individual, to go on and achieve great things.”

Michelle-Lee Ahye was in action late on Saturday, trying to become the first female athlete from T&T to earn precious metal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships. She was one spot short of her goal, finishing fourth in the women’s 60m final in 7.11 seconds.

American Barbara Pierre capitalised on a fast start to grab gold in 7.02, forcing Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers to settle for silver in 7.04. Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson bagged bronze in 7.06.

Ahye was impressive in the second semi-final heat, the US-based track star winning in 7.09 seconds to equal the T&T record she had established in the opening round. In the first semi, Kelly-Ann Baptiste was fourth in 7.16 seconds. But while the clocking was the T&T sprinter’s fastest this season, it was not fast enough to earn her one of the eight championship race lanes. Baptiste was 10th overall.

Like Ahye, Cleopatra Borel was one spot away from the podium, the T&T thrower finishing fourth in the women’s shot put with an 18.38 metres effort. American Michelle Carter produced a big 20.21m throw to take the gold, ahead of Hungarian Anita Marton (19.33m) and New Zealand’s Valerie Adams (19.25m).

Mikel Thomas bowed out in the penultimate round of the men’s 60m hurdles. The T&T athlete was seventh in the second of two semi-final heats and 12th overall in 7.72 seconds. In the opening round, late on Saturday, Thomas finished fourth in heat four in 7.72 to advance to the semis as a “fastest loser”.

In the final, Jamaican Omar McLeod (7.41) and Frenchmen Pascal Martinot-Lagarde (7.46) and Dimitri Bascou (7.48) claimed gold, silver and bronze, respectively.

I think if  Cedenio ran we would have won silver. But congrats to the guys on their bronze.
Not a bad Championship for us two medals, two NR and a few finalist. Well done Team T&T.

If Quow was in the squad and we had a proper quarter-miler to run the 1st leg in the 4x4 Heats we would have won our Heat and thus would have gotten lane 5 or 6 in the final. With lane 5 or 6 in the final we could have beaten the USA and won the gold medal with that very same squad that included Ade Alleyne-Forte.

Hopefully Cedenio did not pick up an injury in the 4x4 Heats and didn't run the Final because he was feeling out of shape and not yet ready to run at his very best and so anchor us for gold in the 4x4 Final.
Also being as tall as Cedenio is, running at his best Indoors may not be as natural for him as shorter guys like Solomon and Quow.

But that interview was kicks. Ade talking about Rio but him being there is very unlikely. At present he will not even make the finals at national. Unless he knows something we don't know

Ade is being optimistic about going to Rio as part of the 4x4 team! Nothing wrong with that once he can make the 400m Olympic standard and can be in the top 6 at National Trials come June.

Don't forget that Ade has a bronze medal from the last Olympics and ran in the 4x4 Olympic final. However I believe in 2012 he was in the top 6 at National Trials so got selected to the team.

Solomon ran the best leg. The other 3 did well. Ade needs to run low 45 to be considered. We have 5 sub 45 men. Then it's a toss up between Ade, Richards and probably Jehue.

Whatever happened to Carlyle Roudette?

Gawd on pitch what you smoking. You can't be talking about the finals. In the semis that statement was correct but not in the finals. He actually ran a weak first leg. He runs better from a standing position. He should never run a first leg in a relay

Roudette ran an indoor race earlier in the season and is probably in training. He told me on facebook that he would be coming home for National Trials in June to try to qualify for the 6-man 4x4 Relay pool to Rio.

Socapro is gawd on pitch actually Jarrin Solomon. I wonder

I think Solomon is one of our most consistent and reliable 4x4 relay runners so I won't condemn gawd on pitch for his opinion.

Solomon is best suited to running the 2nd leg in my opinion but based on how he saved us in the 4x4 Heats I can understand why he was placed on the 1st leg to try to get us off to a strong start in the final.
I think Solomon may have suffered a bit in the 4x4 Final from the energy that he expended in the 4x4 Heats but still managed to give us a decent leg considering the major disadvantage of us starting in lane one.

If Quow was in the squad I would have gone with Quow on 1st leg in the final, Solomon on 2nd leg, L Gordon on 3rd leg and Lendore on 4th and we could have won gold given if we had a better lane than lane one but it was always going to be difficult from lane 1 to win gold. However we had to work with who we had in our 5-man squad when we were allowed to come with an extra man in a 6-man squad but chose not to.

On a related note Machel Cedenio did not run at his best in the 4x4 Heats and was manners by Chris Brown on the last leg. I suspect that Machel had never ran indoors before and was also disadvantaged by his tall height which is not best suited to running indoors.
I am curious as to why Machel did not run in the 4x4 final but my suspicion was that he decided he was not yet at his best and would give Ade Alleyne-Forte who has a bit more to prove based on his slower PB, a chance to run again in the final.

Thanks Soca. Jusbless did not see it the way we did. Considering that the 1st lane is the hardest, Solomon did the best job considering the lane he was given. We seen how Lalonde ran the individual final in the 1st leg. I believe he ran 47+ .. I don't think Ade or Lendore would have handled that lane as good as Solo.

Jusbless, you know me long enough to know that I ain't Solomon. I had to laugh when you posted that.

Lalonde is too tall to run a decent time from lane one on an Indoor track so going with Solomon (who is on the shorter side) on the 1st leg in the 4x4 Final was was indeed the best choice. I am happy with Solomon's performance especially as we still managed to mine bronze from lane one which is pretty good going.

Here are 400m PBs for our other top quarter-milers outside of the top 5 (Cedenio, Lendore, L. Gordon, Quow & Solomon) who all have sub-45 PB's set within last couple years:-

Zwede Hewitt 45.51 set in 2011
Carlyle Roudette 45.66 set in 2014
Jereem Richards 45.91 set in 2015

Ade Alleyne-Forte 46.13 set in 2013
Jehue Gordon 46.43 set in 2010
Jacob St Claire 46.73 set in 2015

Notice that Jehue Gordon 400m PB is still in the 46.xx band and that everyone else except St Clair currently have better 400m PBs than Jehue.

Also note that the Olympic standard is 45.40 and that Hewitt, Roudette and Richards are all nearer to the Olympic standard than Jehue so based upon that info alone I can't see Jehue being part of our 4x4 relay pool unless one of our top 6 quarter-milers ahead of him get injured in Rio and Jehue is brought in as a last minute replacement because he is already part of our Olympic team as a 400m Hurdler.

I don't think anyone should be included in our 4x4 relay pool this year unless they have made the Olympic standard of 45.40 during the 2016 season and also place in the top 6 at National Trials.
We now have a world class Men's 4x4 relay squad and need to keep to these high standards if we want to mine gold in the 4x4 final in Rio and beyond.
This will be the case especially if one, two or all of our top 3 quarter-milers also make it to the 400m Olympic Final as we would need to rest them in the 4x4 Heats depending on the Olympic events schedule and still be able to win our Olympic 4x4 Heat without the participation of one, two or all three of our top 3 quarter-milers.

For argument sake lets say Cedenio, Lendore, L. Gordon, Quow, Solomon & Carlyle Roudette are our top 6 at National Trials in June and all run the Olympic standard of 45.40 during the 2016 season and so get selected to our 4x4 relay pool to Rio and the top 3 at national Trials who get selected to run the individual 400m are Cedenio, Lendore, L. Gordon and they all make the 400m Final.

I would rest all three of our 400m finalists in the 4x4 Heats and would bring in Jehue Gordon and run this team:-
1st leg Quow, 2nd leg Solomon, 3rd leg Roudette and 4th leg Jehue Gordon;

In the 4x4 Final I would go with our A+ squad:-
1st leg Quow, 2nd leg L. Gordon, 3rd leg Lendore and 4th leg Cedenio;

Whoever runs the last leg should naturally be whoever wins the 400m Final at National Trials.
In addition that person will need to get their 400m PB down to near 44 flat this season to be able to match the likes of Merritt of the USA on the last leg of the 4x4 and so maintain any lead that we may have on the USA at the end of the 3rd leg.

With this in mind I am hoping that all three of our top quarter-milers who will represent us in Rio this year reduce their 400m PB and that at least one of them break the current national record of 44.21 set by Ian Morris back in 1992.

I would also suggest that the NAAA includes a motivational figure and coach like Ian Morris as one of our relay coaching staff this year if we are seriously about maximizing our chances of mining gold in the 4x4 in Rio.

Good post there Soca. I was thinking the exact same thing about the relays.

I think Mr Morris's record will be broken this year. My guess is either Cedenio or Lendore. Gordon will probably come very close.

Socapro - great points.

On the relay alternate strategy, I am fairly sure you cannot rest as many as 3 of your relay squad intended to compete in a final, (a maximum of 2, given the allowance for 2 alternates to run the heats). Each team has to use resources that have been registered (presented on the team roster by event) as part of the pool of 6 athletes for the relay. That paperwork is submitted for verification once teams arrive at the Olympic village.

So even in a very rare case where there are multiple injuries impacting a team, I do not think you can bring in an unregistered 200m, 400m hurdler or 800m runner at the last minute to compete; the team will have to forfeit.

I am not totally sure but I believe that Jenhue was brought in in the past as part of the 4x4 relay pool when one of the regular members got injured.
Failing any injuries and the impressive scenraio of all 3 of our 400m men in Rio also making the Final I suspect that we will be allowed to run Jehue in the 4x4 relay heats if we need to rest all three of our 400m finalists depending on the schedule. But then again running in the 4x4 heats could also negatively affect Jehue's preparations for the 400m Hurdles Final if Jehue qualifies for the 400m Hurdles Final and the 400m Hurdles final come close after the 4x4 Heats.

Based upon the very high standard that the 400m has elevated to since last year where our Olympic bronze medalist Lalonde Gordon was unable to make it to the World Athletics 400m Final in Beijing, I would be pleasantly surprised if all 3 of our top quarter-milers make it to the 400m final in Rio.
So the most likely scenario is that at least one of our top 3 quarter-milers will not make it to the Olympic 400m final and will be fresh enough and available to run in the 4x4 Heats so we should be able to manage without the need to draft in Jehue into the 4x4 squad.

Jehue was most likely already selected as a contingent alternate in that instance.

I cannot remember when T&T has had the luxury of naming 6 solid 400m sprinters to a team, usually it's been just the top 4 selected from trials, with potential alternates drawn not from the 400m but from other team selectees in other events  such as the 200, 800, 400 hurdles. This was primarily due to funding limitations.

When I represented that was certainly the case. Once at the games village the team manager had to declare the roster by event to the games officials. I remember I had to go with him in one case in a Spanish-speaking country because I had some fluency.

Here is an excerpt from USATF Rules concerning relay pool declarations. I expect it's the same or similar for most nations:
Declarations
In <GAMES LOCATION>, there will be a formal declaration form for each athlete to sign, indicating that if he or she is selected for a team (including alternates), he/she will be at the track ready, willing, and able to run.  If a commitment is made and an athlete is selected as a relay team member or alternate, it is expected that they will adjust their travel schedules to be at the venue on <EXPECTED DATE>.  Declarations are due to the Team Manager by <TIME OF DAY> on <DEADLINE DATE>. Athlete declarations can be withdrawn any time up to two hours before the filing time; otherwise all selected runners (and alternates) are expected to be at the venue ready, willing, and able to run.

I've never even seen the US use 3 alternates in the heats, and they've on many occasions had 3 finalists, in some cases gold/silver/bronze medallists in Olympic Games and World Champs 400m.

OK cool and thanks for your professionally informed feedback on this topic.

Its good to look at all the possibilities in advance and plan how to manage them to maximize our chances of mining gold. However as I said based upon the very high standard that was set for the Men's 400m last year at the World Athletics Champs in Beijing in which our Olympic bronze medalist Lalonde Gordon was unable to make it to the World Athletics 400m Final, I would be surprised if all 3 of our top quarter-milers qualify for the final of the 400m in Rio even if they all run sub-45 times in the Heats or Semis.

The most likely scenario is that at least one of our top 3 quarter-milers will not qualify for the Olympic 400m final and will be fresh enough and available to run in both the 4x4 Heats and 4x4 Final. So in reality we should not be in need of a 3rd alternate who is not declared as a member of our 6-man 4x4 relay pool for Rio.

Ah wonder when Kim Collins will put an end to his time on the track?
