Jose Luis Rivera, Argentinian road cyclist (first from left) winner of the International & Invitational 20 Lap cycling event at 2016 Southern Games Marabella Criterium on Friday night.
Argentinian road cyclist, Jose Luis Rivera, proved a cut above the rest at the 2016 Southern Games Marabella Criterium on Friday night as he cruised to the International & Invitational 20 Lap Main Event title in commanding style when action rode off in front of Awardy’s Hardware on the Southern Main Road.
Rivera broke free from the bunch with just two laps completed and never looked back at his rivals. Valiant attempts by Camilo Mendoza (Colombia) and local favourite Akil Campbell were futile as the Argentine continued to open the gap. Rivera dominated throughout and began to gear down with five laps remaining, well aware that the victory was already in the bag. Chilean Antonio Torres, who pulled away from the bunch in the penultimate lap, caught the runaway leader on the final lap and both held hands as they crossed the finished 1-2.
There was a mad sprint to the finish for the remainder of the bunch in the battle for bronze.
Young Tyler Cole on his senior National team debut outsprinted the experienced Jamaican Marloe Rodman for third.
In the first event of the night, Campbell was a comfortable winner over Rivera in the International Men – 4 Lap event while Hilliry Sayedra (Colombia) defeated Teniel Campbell (Team DPS) in a sprint finish for the Elite Women.
Nicholas Paul (Breakaway) continued his domination in the Junior Men category while Jabari Whiteman (Southclaine) followed in the same vein for the Juvenile Men. Expected names such as Rocky Hosein (Hummingbirds), Rodney Woods (Team Woods) and Cyril Fook (PSL) all stepped to the top tier of the podium in the Masters 40-49, Masters 50-59 and Masters 60+ categories respectively.
The grass track cycling of the Southern Games will take place today from 1pm at Guaracara Park. All international cyclists from Friday night’s racing and last night’s Luces Brothers Memorial Classic are expected to be on show today.

Lesean Noel (lane 6 of Petrotrin) scorches the track at Guaracara Park to capture Southern Games' blue riband men's 100 metres Final
Petrotrin's Lesean Noel scorched the grass track at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre to capture the Southern Games' blue riband men's 100 metres event yesterday.
Noel had a sluggish start and did not look to be in the hunt at the halfway stage but was able to accelerate over the last 20 metres to just get home in a time of 11.08 seconds. The second, third and fourth positions all recorded a time of 11.16 as Concorde's Keston Wickham grabbed silver while bronze went to Michael Sealey of Speed Factory.
Kamaria Durant had a much easier assignment in the women's 100 metres despite not having the best of starts. The Simplex sprinter powered her way to the front at the 40-metre mark and pulled away to win comfortably in 11.94 seconds. UTT Fast Track's Shirnelle Ettienne was second in 12.24 with Durant's club mate Onika Murray third in 12.51.
And Simplex' Jalen Purcell produced the fastest time of the evening when he romped to victory in 10.95 seconds in the boys'under-20 100 metres. Joash Huggins of Dovers was second in 11.24 and Abilene's Jerod Elcock third in 11.28.
Tacuma Sterling powered to victory in the men's 400 metres, coming home ahead of Defence Force's Anika Prince and Arinze Chance of UTT Fast Track. The Alpha Athletic Club's athlete returned 48.98 seconds to Prince's 49.75 and the 50.05 clocked by Chance.
Abilene's Romona Modeste copped gold in the women's 400 metres, stopping the clock in a time of 57.06 seconds as the Carifta-bound Renee Stoddard of Speed Factory took silver in 57.85 with bronze going to Memphis' Thyla-Marie Scott in 58.45.
In field competition, Trinidad and Tobago's (T&T) Parapan American Games discuss champion, Akeem Stewart, emerged victorious in the men shot put. The Tobago Falcons athlete had a best effort of 18.23 metres while Shevorne Worrell of UTT Fast Track, 16.16m, and UWI's Kesean Phillips, 14.56m, finished second and third, respectively.
Rebirth's Shaquille Waithe threw the spear 65.16 metres to top the field in the men's javelin. And the men's long jump threw up a spirited battle between the Herbert brothers as Dwaine, of UTT Fast Track, prevailed with a best distance of 6.75 metres. Dwight, representing Warriors, had to settle for silver with a leap of 6.73m while Point Fortin New Jets' Ian West took bronze with 6.38m.
Chelsea James made it a Falcons double in the shot put when she threw the ball 14.11 metres to take the women's event. Toco Tafac's Cherisse Murray, 13.80m, and Marielle Pierre of UTT, 12.80m, filled the minor positions.
And in cycling action, T&T's Quincy Alexander copped match sprint gold in dominant fashion. Alexander disposed of Colombia's Diego Romero in their semi-final match-up to square off against Roberto Serrano Plowells of Mexico in the championship showdown.
In the first of their best-of-three rides, Alexander drafted in behind the Mexican rear wheel before drifting out 150 metres from home to blow past his opponent. Plowells made the fundamental error of leaving too much space on his inside in the second ride, which Alexander readily accepted to power away and grab gold in straight rides.
Andrew Leveton of the United Kindom took bronze when he dispatched of Romero in straight rides.
And Akil Campbell and Varun Maharajh led a T&T 1-2 in the international elimination event.
The race went down to the final two and the duo rode intelligently to ensure that the Chilean pair of Alvaro Grandon and Antonio Torres was eliminated to leave just the two of them standing.

Kamaria Durant leading the field in 100m at Southern Games 2013
Simplex's Kamaria Durant copped the sprint double at the 2016 Southern Games when she bolted to victory in the women's 200 metres event at Guaracara Park on Sunday.
Durant, who claimed 100 metres gold earlier, covered the half-lap distance in 25.05 seconds to get home ahead of UTT Fast Track's Shirnelle Ettienne, 25.32, and Karista Thomas of Speed Factory (26.69).
In the men's 200m, Kyle Greaux of Abilene Wildcats ran out an impressive winner, seizing control of the race from the mid-point and shutting right down in the final 10 metres to coast home in 22.18 seconds. UTT Fast Track's Arinze Chance took silver in 22.42 with Che Hart of Concorde snapping up bronze in 22.68.

King later collected a special award trophy after he was adjudged the best 200 metres athlete of the meet.
Mark Allen of the United States of America turned the men's 5000 metres into a procession after dictating the early going with countryman Ethan Clary. Allen covered the trip in 15 minutes, 07.23 seconds as Clary held second in 15:17.50 and Guyana's Cleveland Forde a distant third in 16:03.42.
Clifton Sylvester and Kerime Morris produced a 1-2 finish for the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force in the men's 800 metres. Sylvester snatched gold in one minute, 57.70 seconds with Morris returning 1:58.37 for silver. Speed Factory's Antoneil Prince took bronze in a time of 2:00.62.

And Daniel Gibbs collected precious metal when he emerged strongest in a keenly-contested Boys Under-20 800 metres event. The Mustangs athlete got home in two minutes, 00.85 seconds, holding off the challenges of Abilene's Jeremiah Hamilton, 2:01.52, and Myles Jackson of Memphis Pioneers, 2:01.55.

Kamaria Durant of Simplex Athletics Club does
the 2016 Southern Games 100m/200m double.
POINTE-A-PIERRE, Trinidad: Former World Relays bronze medallist Kamaria Durant (Simplex) won the women’s 100m and 200m titles at the 52nd annual Southern Games held at the Petrotrin Sports Club, Guaracara on Sunday, (March 13). Durant was first in the 100m on the grass turf in 11.94 well ahead of Shirnelle Ettienne (UTT) 12.24 and another Simplex sprinter Onika Murray 12.51 to claim her third 100m crown. The 2014 World Relays 4x100m bronze medal winning team lead-off runner won the title back in 2013 and 2014 before having to settle for second in 2015. In the 200m she again defeated Ettienne for the top spot in 25.05. Ettienne took the early lead but Durant finished strongly to win her fourth straight 200m title and completed her third sprint double in four years. Her Simplex club mate Kercelia Francis also sped to a sprint double landing the girls under 14 100m (13.23) and 200m (26.90) gold medals. Anika Wolf of the host club Pointe-a-Pierre gave her fans much to cheer after she ran away with the girls under 18 200m (26.26) and 400m (1:02.16) while 14 year old Patrice Richards (Neon Wolves) was impressive in claiming the girls under 16 200m (25.59) and 400m (59.33).

Athletes shine at Southern Games (http://www.newsday.co.tt/sport/0,225356.html)
By YANNICK QUINTAL Tuesday, March 15 2016 (T&T Newsday)
THE 52ND edition of the Southern Games took place Sunday at Guaracara Park in Marabella.
The games featured 65 events where athletes took part in various track and cycling events, as well as field events that included, high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin.
The Southern Games, which was supposed to be run over the course of two days were condensed into one due to financial constraints which had caused some of the events such as the Marabella Mile, T20 cricket, and rifle shooting to be cancelled.
Despite this, there was a large turnout that came to support the many cycling and athletic clubs that came to take part in the games. Notable clubs included Simplex, Point Fortin New Jets (PFNJ), Memphis Pioneers, Abilene and Team DPS. Institutes such as the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) Fast Track team and the University of the West Indies (UWI) Track and Field team were also present to compete.
Notable cycling clubs featured Rigtec Sonics, Arima Wheelers and Breakaway. It also included our own national riders such as Quincy Alexander, Gavyn Nero, Varun Maharajh and Akil Campbell.
Also present at the Southern Games where a pool of international cyclists such as Madeline Moore and Andrew Leveton from the United Kingdom, Antonio Torres and Alvaro Grandon from Chile, Diego Romero and Vanessa Cadavid from Colombia, and Roberto Serraro Plowells from Mexico, just to name a few.
Some of the more notable moment of the night were a sweep of the podium by Silver Bullets athletes in the Girls Under-14 400 metres, a dominating performance by Quincy Alexander in the Match Sprint events and a come-from-behind finish on the last lap of the 2000m cycle event by Akil Campbell.
