T&T Senior Men to play Nicaragua in two away friendlies.
TTFA Media.

The Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men’s Team will jet off to Nicaragua on the evening of Christmas Day, December 25th, to play that country’s Senior Men’s National Team in two international friendlies.

The games are slated for December 27th and 30th in Nicaragua and the T&T team will return home on December 31 to continue its build up to the two CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying playoff matches against Suriname on January 4th and Haiti on January 8th at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Tom Saintfiet said that these two games have come at an ideal time as he prepares the team for the two CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers in January against Haiti and Suriname.

“First of all I am very happy that the Football Association has been able to arrange these two friendly matches at such short notice because these will be important preparation games for us before the important Gold Cup qualifiers in January,” Saintfiet told TTFA Media.

“It also helps me as coach to analyse the players we will select and as well as to implement and try out possible strategies which we will want to use in our matches to follow. It will also help us in the development of the team for the future.

“ I hope we can have the best possible squad for the matches. We are still not sure about the availability of some of the European-based players and whether they will be released by their clubs because these two games and also the ones in January are not within the FIFA dates but I promise you that the players who will be selected from both foreign and local teams will form a strong squad to give us decent results in Nicaragua and to help us prepare for the important matches in January,” Saintfiet stated.

Saintfiet will announce the squad for the both games in due course once the availability of the players have been confirmed.

Nicaragua is preparing for their Gold Cup qualification matches as well, the 2017 2017 Copa Centroamericana which will be played in Panama. They are grouped with Honduras, Panama and Belize and play their opener against Honduras on January 13th.

Once T&T progresses from the CFU leg of the playoffs in January, they will meet the fifth placed team of the Copa Centroamericana in a playoff at a date to be announced for the final CONCACAF Gold Cup spot.

Nicaragua and T&T played to a 0-0 draw in a friendly at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on October 13th, 2015

In March, 2016, Nicaragua defeated Panama 1-0 in a friendly in Managua and also drew 1-1 with El Salvador in another friendly that same month. They lost 1-0 to Honduras in a friendly in San Pedro Sula in August and drew 0-0 with St Kitts/Nevis in August. Back in December of 2015, they recorded 1-0 and 5-0 victories over Cuba at home before suffering a narrow 1-0 loss away to Costa Rica.

Forget about Christmas lads, this is much more important, lets hope KERRON CUMMINS is selected and given at least half an hour on the pitch. It would also be nice to see KJ in a mid field position, there must be better strikers than him in TT or outside of TT.

If players can't put aside Xmas for a chance of glory no matter the coach then I don't know what to say. Blood, sweat and tears for your team and country is what should be on deh mind right now!

Well this is good news for the New Coach and local players to step up to the plate. Congrats to the Federation for organizing this match. Nicaragua is a decent sweat. Let us hope the players  don't  get home sick . Christmas and Carnival are not good times for T&T ballers.

Maybe for allyuh everything good, for me and many others it doesn't matter..

Bad timing first and the clubs don't have to release their players, it's not mandatory, so it's another opp for djw to get more caps for his local players...

Everything this guy does is for his benefit, allyuh men don't realize that? It's not for national football, it's for himself..

Read walkes interview it will give you some more insight into the dictator...

It's amazing how some men on here are so easily fooled by some low level friendlies that are not helping to build our A team...

Hart should have gone after the 4 nil beating by the USA, he had nuff time and didn't do anything to improve TT football, he had one of the best teams for some time . I'll bet we now get some improved performances with the foreign coach.

The comment seems directed to commitment to play under this coach, rather than eligibility for these specific matches.

This whole thing is a big sham..John Williams hired a puppet coach so that he can get what he wants which is

lots of money..John Williams will make lots of money when the National team loses and he would continue have full control to make even more when he fires this coach.

He wasn't in full control with Hart at the helm because he couldn't control Hart...He made sure and sabotaged Hart because Hart had the keys to succeeding.

It's funny how that dynamic player got shot in the leg..

According to a reliable source in Nicaragua, our delegation will comprise thirty three (33) persons. A final decision on the venue(s) has NOT been determined.

Very compressed match dates. Not the preferred scientific circumstance when one considers travel to the match destination (in-country and to country) and solely two days prior to playing the second engagement (not counting the day following the first match).

Nica plays the Copa Centroamericana which kicks off ~ January 13. The "rush" is on our part.

Not to mention he want to cap as much of his players and partners players as possible... and siphone out as much money as humanly possible before he get thrown out..

By my count... T&T's record in all games (over 90 mins) for the following periods:

Nov 09 - Nov 12
18W 11L 5D  67% unbeaten

Dec 12 - Nov 15
16W 11L 12D 71% unbeaten

Dec 15 - Dec 16
3W 8L 2D 23% unbeaten

DJW era... 3 years preceding that and the previous 3 years before.
Draw your own conclusions.
Note: no consideration for strength of opponents etc.

Cummings getting shot was an unfortunate accident. However we shouldnt be so simple to unjustly and inaccurately try to link that incident to DJW.

I'm no fan of DJW but we better than that.

SAINTFIET CALLS 28-MAN TRAINING SQUAD

molinocarlos
December 14, 2016
Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Head Coach Tom Saintfiet will conduct his first training session on Thursday, December 15th  at 7pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

This will be his opening session ahead of the two international friendlies away to Nicaragua later this month and will involve twenty-eight players who have been invited to be part of a training squad. Saintfiet will subsequently select his final squad for the two matches next week for a residential training camp before the team departs on Christmas day for Managua. The two games are carded for December 27th and 30th.

Saintfiet spoke about his selection for the training squad.

“It was a short period of time for me before I had to release a squad. It is naturally not easy if you have just arrived in the country as I prefer to have much more time to anaylzye and see the local leagues. I saw now most of the teams in the Pro League and also the Super League,” Saintfiet told TTFA Media.

“The squad is made based on my style of play but also on  consultation with several people of the technical committee, local coaches and other local people involved in football here. In the future we can also see players involved who were maybe not selected now  because then I will follow up the league more and know more about the individual players and their qualities and I would have more knowledge of the players in the local league and abroad.

“To me now it is a good moment in these sessions to see the players who play in the local league and some who play abroad who are available, to analyse to see if they fit into my thoughts on how to play and also their personalities and in a few days time the squad has to reduced,” Saintfiet said.

Notes

Carlos Edwards has made 88 appearances for Trinidad and Tobago and was a member of the 2006 World Cup Squad. He last played for T&T in an international friendly against Jamaica in November 2013.

This is Maurice Forde’s first invitation to the Men’s Senior Team. Hashim Arcia has already made appearances for the T&T Senior Team. Jomoul Francois is former T&T National Youth team player.

I man not against change
But process which brought it to light..or lack there off is very annoying and vexing
Instead of building on what was accomplished by Hart before the current administration came into being..once they took over, they totally F.... uped all the effort and capital that was spent getting the game to respectability...From a high of the recent gold cup to where we are now in such a short space in time....man thats ugly personified
All I am seeing is me me me and I I I...

I not sure we have all the facts. Some players, fixtures in the national setup for years left out.

I was skeptical about his appointment but he is in and has the right to mold and shape as he sees fit.

I will judge based on what i see on the field and the results.

Bring on the games!
That's how we should view the new coach, judge him by results so wait and see before we jump to conclusions. To start there is no KJ and that can't be bad,his input has been way under what is expected.

Allyuh men have a very low football iq to be saying KJ getting chop is a good thing..

Show me a striker better than him now locally that can easily replace him?

I don't think he should be dropped, his natural attributes enables an entire tactical approach that can be used at the start or in-game depending on the situation, but I not sure if KJ did himself any favours over the last few months with 1 goal in 2016 and there is a point of view whether the previous coaching staff pigeon holed themselves by not adequately addressing his use tactically given his lack of form.

He is a reason why I don't like strikers being captain as that position is a form position and needs to be refreshed when players experience a dip. When a striker is captain you are a bit stuck cause you want to keep the consistency of leadership but an out of form striker is probably the most noticeable deficiency on the field.

I think overall this will be good for KJ though, this will light a fire under him as he goes into his new chapter in MLS with a real point to proove to his new employers to MLS and TTFA that he is far from done.

KJ not being selected for the team is not bad for KJ. He can concentrate on his club football and there's less chance of him being injured.

And maybe with him not there people will come to understand what they missing when he is not in the lineup.

People don't know what they missing in KJ because our mid field play is lacking. KJ needs to get the ball. Some perfect, some not so perfect, in the air, on the ground, to foot, etc, etc. He does not get the kind of service he needs. He is not a great dribbler. He is hitman. Kind of like Gerd Muller. Not flashy, just get it done. We don't have the mid-fielders to service him. Look, he is not on the team with this regime. So let's move on. If that means not supporting anything TTFA .... then that is an option.

People also don't know that the dictator was put in place to destabilize our football... the late tony cozier lamented about "outside interference", well it also applies to Trinidad and Tobago football..

Kenwyne is not the problem, the problem lies deeper than that and even off of our shores..

A reminder:

Getting rid of Hart
Getting rid of kerron cummings
Getting rid of john bostock and Greg the keeper
Causing rift in team with coach and players - Molino and company
Getting rid of jones, Boucard and eventually Jan
Getting rid of guerra and others, who will not be called to play

That's how you dismantle a national team and break chemistry, TT is too threatening and is controlled from the top on instructions from  the outside interferences ...

Contro, who is it that is telling DJW to drop them guys. As it is right now, TT was not a threat to anyone the way they been playing since the game against Haiti. Yes, at times we punch above our weight. But we don't do it consistently. You throwing things ou there like Donald. I don't need them conspiracy theories to form an opinion of DJW and his admin. That will not solve the issues. When the next election comes up, have your people present their case for running TTFA in a persuasive manner. Remember the only vote the fans have is to boycott the games. We don't vote.

Contro, what pieces are there to assemble? Let's say for argument sake, DJW tell Saintfiet to only pick Connection and Caledonia men and they start winning and qualify. What then ? The people that you saying that are controlling DJW, going to then crucify him for allowing our guys to win? That eh make sense. If you telling me that he want his players on the squad,  so that they can get international caps so that he can sell them for more money... I will agree with you on that. He definitely did not want Hart from day one. He bid his time. He did not help Hart with warm up games. I think he was totally pissed with Hart for not agreeing with him to play the Equatorial Guinea match. And from there on everything went south for Hart. Like I said before, you don't need to convince most of us on the forum about this fiasco. Most are pissed. We just biding time.

Senior Team enters final week of preparations before Nicaragua friendlies
TTFA Media

As the National Team prepares to head into its first residential under head coach Tom Saintfiet on Tuesday, members of the team have given positive feedback about the preparations so far which commenced last Thursday leading into the two upcoming friendlies against Nicaragua.

Saintfiet has conducted four sessions so far and will oversee double sessions daily from Tuesday as he gets his squad ready for the two matches in Managua to be followed by the CFU Gold Cup playoff matches at the Ato Boldon Stadium against Suriname and Haiti on January 4 and 8th. The team departs Port of Spain on Christmas evening.

Goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams who has spent the last two sessions also working with goalkeeper coach Lukas Wojciak, said Saintfiet has made a strong impression so far.

“It’s been really good so far. I think the coach obviously has the right ideas, he has all the qualifications for the job and he has come in and imposed himself really well on the group. He has made his intentions clear which is to firstly qualify for the Gold Cup and then the World Cup. I think he was well received by the players and it augers well for the future of the football in Trinidad and Tobago. He knows his stuff and he has really gotten off to a very good start,” Williams told TTFA Media on Sunday after training at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium.

Williams noted the importance of the team achieving positive results and regaining  confidence as it prepares to enter a busy 2017 calendar.

“ Now is crunch time for us. We have to buckle down as a team and we have to get back to winning ways. I think the coach knows his stuff and with that extra drive and motivation we should do well. Although we may not have our full compliment of players for Nicaragua I think a lot of the local based players are getting a chance to show that they deserve a spot,” the Central FC custodian added.

Mexican-based forward Shahdon Winchester said it was important that the squad members focus on  playing their parts in helping the team achieve positive results in the matches to come.

“ So far things have been going good with the addition of the new players and technical staff. I am pleased with the sessions so far and I think we can only go up from here. I think he (Saintfiet) strongly believes in his philosophy which is a good thing. The four games are important. The two games against Nicaragua are warm ups for us heading into the Suriname and Haiti games. As coach said, he came here to do a job, and we as players have to help him do that job,” Winchester said.

Cornell poised for shock return! But Jan and Nathaniel are out as Saintfiet stands firm
Lasana Liburd  Monday 19 December 2016 Global Football, National Football, Volley 20 Comments

Former World Cup 2006 attacker Cornell Glen looks set to return to the international stage after a three-year absence from the Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team.

The 36-year-old Glen, who now plays professionally in India for Ozone FC Bengaluru, last wore the red, white and black strip on 15 July 2013 when the Soca Warriors were edged 1-0 by Mexico in the quarterfinal round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Glen left Pro League outfit, North East Stars, for Shillong Lajong FC in the I-League—immediately after the regional competition—and was never selected to represent Trinidad and Tobago since.

However, Wired868 understands that Glen could be set for a surprise recall to the national side and might join the squad in Nicaragua.

Glen is joint fifth on Trinidad and Tobago’s all-time scoring charts alongside former National Senior Team captain Kenwyne Jones, who was omitted by Saintfiet. Both forwards have 23 international goals although Glen’s 67 caps are 20 shy of Jones’ tally.

Former World Cup 2006 striker Stern John is in a class of his own with 70 international goals followed by fellow retirees Angus Eve (34), Russell Latapy (29) and Arnold Dwarika (28). Ex-World Cup 2006 captain and Manchester United star Dwight Yorke, according to the RSSSF statistics, is ninth with 19 goals for his country.

National Senior Team coach Tom Saintfiet refused to confirm or deny Glen’s possible recall until the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) officially names the travelling team tomorrow.

But Saintfiet admitted that are there vacancies within his squad for the Nicaragua outings on 27 and 31 November, due to the sudden unavailability of several members of his initial 29-man squad.

San Juan Jabloteh striker Willis Plaza leaves this week for a trial in Dubai while Orlando City midfield ace Kevin Molino and San Jose Earthquakes winger Cordell Cato have business with their clubs. Attacker Joevin Jones, who won the MLS Cup with Seattle Sounders three weeks ago, also asked for additional time off to recover from his long season.

It means Saintfiet may be forced to summon additional Pro League players, which could open the door for the likes of Jabloteh wingers Nathan Lewis and Tyrone Charles, Defence Force midfielder Jerwyn Balthazar and Morvant Caledonia United utility player Jameel Neptune or the Police FC pair of Christon Thomas and Kareem Freitas.

Defence Force striker Devorn Jorsling and Jabloteh frontman Jamal Gay—based on the coach’s explanation for excluding Kenwyne—might be unsuitable to Saintfiet’s plans.

Two players who definitely will not figure in Saintfiet’s contingent for Nicaragua are goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams and midfielder Nathaniel Garcia, after the national coach failed to reach a compromise with their employer, Central FC, who are chasing a hattrick of Pro League titles.

Saintfiet initially called up both players, along with midfielder Sean De Silva, but was infuriated when the “Couva Sharks” insisted on deciding when they could train and refused to accept a directive that they skip Pro League matches on Tuesday and Friday night.

FIFA rules mean that clubs are not obliged to release players outside of the international match window, although Central were the only local team to take that hardline.

Ironically, both club and country will miss out on playmaker Sean De Silva after the two-time World Youth Cup midfielder injured his groin at national practice and will now spend two weeks on the sidelines.

At the height of Saintfiet’s disagreement with Central FC, he unfavourably compared their managing director, Brent Sancho, to his last employer in Bangladesh—he did not accuse Sancho of a third world mentality, as initially suggested by his assistant coach Jamaal Shabazz and Sancho himself.

Saintfiet still accused Central of reneging on a gentleman’s agreement to release players to the national team whenever deemed necessary. But the Warriors coach promised to consider the pair for next month’s Gold Cup play off fixtures against Suriname and Haiti on 4 and 8 January respectively.

“I don’t want to [create problems for] my players,” Saintfiet told Wired868. “They [are] split in two directions; they want to respect the club and the owner and they want to play for their country…

“I need time to work with my players and see how they implement my technical ideas and it is always best to have [time to work with your] players. But I never close doors or have any problem with players.

“It is a decision from their club and I will not punish players who are forced into a situation [like that]. I will analyse [our training sessions in] the coming week and our friendlies against Nicaragua and reassess the [need for Williams and Garcia].”

Central operations director Kevin Harrison insisted that the club are light on numbers at present, due to injuries and suspension, and cannot do without Williams and Garcia.

At present, they do not have the services of injured defenders Robert Primus and Kaydion Gabriel while midfielder Leston Paul is suspended and forward Kenwyne Jones—who is on loan from MLS team Atlanta United—has headed to Atlanta on business. De Silva has now joined the injury list.

Harrison said there were no hard feelings over De Silva’s injury, although he alleged that his club have often paid to rehab players injured on international duty such as Trinidad and Tobago National Under-20 forward Nicholas Dillon.

He insisted that all Central wanted was compromise.

“We definitely don’t want to effect the players’ careers by trying to prove a point to the coach, which certainly seems to be his intention towards the club,” Harrison told Wired868. “However, we have to consider the club’s position first… We are the players’ employers and we do pay their salaries and we feel that should be respected.

“Nathaniel Garcia is very keen to play [for Trinidad and Tobago] and Jan wants to reassert himself in the national team. Sean probably [got injured in national team training because he] over-exerted himself, as he was so keen to impress.

“We don’t want conflict with our players because we don’t want to release them. We talked to them and they understand [our] position and we understand their position.”

The Sharks, who are four points clear at the top of the table, face second from bottom Morvant Caledonia on Tuesday night and then sixth placed Defence Force on Friday. And Williams and Garcia will have to make do with those less exotic challenges.

For Saintfiet and his team, Christmas and Old Year’s Day celebrations are both cancelled as they prepare for life after ex-head coach Stephen Hart.

Apart from Glen, combative midfielder Kevan George also looks set to join the team in Nicaragua, although he will miss their first fixture.

Despite losing several key players for various reasons—and Eredivise winger Levi Garcia is the latest player to be ruled out of next month’s Gold Cup play offs—Saintfiet was satisfied with his first week on the job and, from all reports, the players have responded positively to his training sessions.

“I don’t want to think too much about [the players who] we do not have,” said Saintfiet. “We have to construct a team with the players who are available. We want to go to Nicaragua and see how good we are with who we have.”

Saintfiet finalises 23-man squad for Nicaragua warm-ups.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago Senior Team head coach Tom Saintfiet has finalised a 23-man squad that will travel to Managua for the two upcoming international friendlies against Nicaragua’s Senior Men’s Team.

Saintfiet and his squad entered a residential camp at Cara Suites hotel in Claxton Bay on Tuesday and are engaged in training sessions twice daily at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium. The team departs for Managua on Sunday evening for the two matches which are slated for December 27th and 30th. The squad returns to Port of Spain on Old Year’s Day. From the squad selected, overseas-based duo Cornell Glen and Kevan George will join the contingent in Managua.

Orlando City midfielder Kevin Molino and Cordell Cato are both unavailable due to club business while Willis Plaza will travel abroad for a trial. Sheldon Bateau, Khaleem Hyland, Andre Boucaud and Levi Garcia are also unavailable for the matches against Nicaragua due to club commitments.

Saintfiet commented on his selection after practice this morning.

“We started the  training camp yesterday. We don’t have the full squad here because there are still some foreign based players to arrive but I am very happy. We have about 19 or 20 players in camp. I think we have a mixed group of young payers, talented players without experience in national team but also players who played a lot for the national team and are very experienced, who also have experience abroad,” Saintfiet told TTFA Media.

“The atmosphere is good. The boys trained good last week and yesterday, and we are looking forward to prepare this team for Nicaragua but Nicaragua is also preparation for the real matches against Suriname and Haiti. I am quite satisfied, hotel is good, everything is well organised and we are now building really a team for the coming weeks.”

“On the other side, some players are absent, some from Europe and other parts of Concacaf are unavailable but I am very happy and pleased with the squad we have now. The Nicaragua games are there for us to analyse and see how good we are right now,” Saintfiet said.

Saintfiet touched on the selection of a couple new faces in the final 23-man squad including Tyrone Charles, Nathan Lewis and Akeem Roach who were not in the initial training squad. Saintfiet observed the players during his viewing of local T&T Pro League matches since arriving in the country.

“The reason they are invited is because they caught my eye. Secondly there are absences of some other players and some players can fill those vacancies. The players that come fit exactly into the system I want to play and I am very happy that they are added and I hope they can adapt very fast.”

And on the call up for India-based striker Cornell Glen, Saintfiet added  “We are looking still for some strikers. We have some absence with Wilis Plaza who is not available . We have to look for alternatives and we will look in these friendly matches and in the coming training sessions at his quality and level and we will see what he brings. He has to prove in training whether he is ready for it just like every other player.

The Belgian-born coach will not name a captain for the two games until closer to matchday.

“I have had some thoughts about it but I didn’t make the final decision yet. To be honest I don’t think it’s is always that important who is the captain for me. I like that the whole team takes the responsibility of a captain. They know it’s an honour for a player to be captain of a national team and for a player to play for the national team just like it is an honour to coach a national team but I want all my players to work as a captain, and to be proud for their country and take on that duty.”

He also gave his views on the level of readiness shown by the players who have been part of his training so far.

“I believe that locally we have a lot of good players and I am looking forward already to the future. After the league I think there could be a huge opportunity to train a lot with the local players to make a better understanding for the needs of international football, to improve here and there and to work longer together.

“I think maybe we overlooked a bit too long the quality of the local based players and focused too much on the foreign based players who are also of a high quality. But i think we can find the ideal mix. Locally there are a lot of players with the potential to go abroad and to defend their country and I hope they take this opportunity,” Saintfiet added.

The team trains twice tomorrow at Manny Ramjohn Stadium at 9:30am and 5:30pm.

If that is the team we putting our hopes into making the Gold cup and Russia, I don't think we have a chance.

If that is the administration we putting our hopes into making the Gold cup and Russia, I don't think we have a chance.

The feeling I got when we missed out on 1990, 2015 and 2016 copa, is almost the same feeling I get when I see Hart go and the new coach and administration was named.

Central FC players left out from T&T squad.
By Jelani Beckles (Newsday).

LOCAL FOOTBALL officials are having different opinions in the process by which the national football team is being selected after the 23-man Trinidad and Tobago team was confirmed for the two international friendlies against Nicaragua.

New T&T coach Tom Saintfeit, earlier this month, omitted veteran striker and captain Kenwyne Jones from the 28-man training squad for the Nicaragua matches. When the final 23-man squad was announced yesterday Jan-Michael Williams, who has been the starting goalkeeper for T&T for many years was omitted.

Both players currently play for Central FC, the two-time TT Pro League and current league leaders. T&T face Nicaragua on December 27 and 30.

Managing director of Central FC Brent Sancho said that Saintfiet stated if the national players participated in the Pro League matches on Tuesday they would be dropped from the national team. Central FC players Sean De Silva, Nathaniel Garcia and Williams were all named in the original 28-man training squad. De Silva was injured and was left out of the 23-man squad but Garcia and Williams failed to make the cut on the current T&T team.

Garcia and Williams both represented Central FC in the Pro League against Morvant Caledonia United on Tuesday, but Sancho believes Saintfiet had already made up his mind regarding the composition of the 23-man squad for next week’s trip to Nicaragua.

Sancho stated, “from the very start of this debacle we are extremely and continue to be very disappointed.

We have to select the best team to participate in the Nicaragua games. How in God’s name you could ask a goalkeeper (Williams) that has over 77 caps for his country and has been the starting goalkeeper for the past four, five years for this country and you still need to see him (in the camp)?” Sancho added, “Why do you still need to see him in a camp, what point does that prove.

He played Tuesday, he will be playing again this Friday, if you have any doubts about him you come and watch him play in a game.

I am very sure if you take a poll with coaches around the world and ask the best methods to see any player they would probably tell you the best bet is to see a player is in a game.” Sancho, a former national defender, is wondering if certain players are being victimised.

“I want to start to think that this is a witch-hunt. In all my life of playing national team football and international football there is no way you could ask a goalkeeper with 77 caps and has been the starting goalkeeper for five years to come into camp because you need to see him play. That is extremely ludicrous.” Williams was injured during this country’s last World Cup qualifier against Honduras but Sancho says he is fully fit to play.

Sancho explained, “this is a man that has played for Central FC in three games since the Honduras injury and clearly he is fit. So I don’t think this is a question of fitness, it cannot be. They have gotten rid of Kenwyne Jones and I believe Jan-Michael Williams is probably the next one they wanted to get rid off.”

Former national player and current coach of Club Sando Angus Eve said an agreement was made before the Pro League season began that national football will be a priority. Eve confirmed that Club Sando striker Akeem Roach did not play in the Pro League on Tuesday night as Roach was selected for the national team. Eve stated, “at the beginning of the season, we the coaches and the Pro League decided that we will give the national team preference for this short term. This is a World Cup year. If the national team is not operating at their optimum then it does not help the Pro League.

The Pro League supposed to help the national team where we are developing players to play for T&T , to move them on to bigger and better things, that is our job at the Pro League.” Eve added, “people of principle you have to stand by the agreement.

I missing Akeem Roach, he is the (second leading) goal scorer in the league (with eight goals). He is the only recognised striker my team have. But if he goes to the national team it is better for him. For somebody to be complaining now it is hypocrisy.”

Cornell poised for shock return! But Jan and Nathaniel are out as Saintfiet stands firm.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

But Saintfiet admitted that are there vacancies within his squad for the Nicaragua outings on 27 and 30 December, due to the sudden unavailability of several members of his initial 29-man squad.

For Saintfiet and his team, Christmas is cancelled as they prepare for life after ex-head coach Stephen Hart.

Patience bruh.  We'll see soon enough.

Maybe the Federation will be proven right and T&T go on to qualify for WC 2018 in Russia under coach Saintfeit.

Maybe we do have the quality of players here playing in the Pro League, that can compete and win against the best in CONCACAF.

As much as I would like to think so, I disagree with that idea.  But I'm happy to be wrong if it means the team is successful and qualifies.

maybe nothing. There's nothing more to see. for years on end the pro leaguers have been unsuccessful against the best in concacaf and has been made to look very ordinary and paled in comparison to concacaf giants like chivas- toluca- america- saprissa- houston-seattle.

W connection- defense force - jablotee-- calidonia- and new comers central FC, were all dominated in the CCL, what more is there to see?

You've gotten your wish.  We'll see soon enough how the "home boys" measure up in international play.

Now....Nicaragua is a competitive team and not the pushover that some on here seem to think they are.

That said.....they couldn't get past the 3rd round of WCQ.  So the "home boys" performance in this match will go some way to determining their readiness for the higher level of competition that is the Hex.

Maybe the Pro League is more than many, including myself, think it is.

BTW....there's also a little saying that might be appropriate in these circumstances.....

Be careful what you ask for.......

the office is no longer the fortress that it was. Jamaica lost to Panama and Costa Rica at the office in the run up to the hex, remember?

What is Santeef's philosophy and style of play?????

Patience bruh.  We'll see soon enough.

Maybe the Federation will be proven right and T&T go on to qualify for WC 2018 in Russia under coach Saintfeit.

Maybe we do have the quality of players here playing in the Pro League, that can compete and win against the best in CONCACAF.

As much as I would like to think so, I disagree with that idea.  But I'm happy to be wrong if it means the team is successful and qualifies.

Time will reveal all.  We don't have much longer to wait.
maybe nothing. There's nothing more to see. for years on end the pro leaguers have been unsuccessful against the best in concacaf and has been made to look very ordinary and paled in comparison to the concacaf giants like chivas- toluca- america- saprissa- houston-seattle.

W connection- defense force - jablotee-- calidonia- and new comers central FC, were all dominated in the CCL, what more is there to see?

Obviously those in power at the TTFA beg to differ.  Perhaps they know better.  After all....they're in charge of football in the country.

Honestly doh, we could beat Nicaragua with this team, they not all that special at present..even St Kitts and Antigua ranked higher and they haven't had a ton of practice games to improve on this or themselves.  Thing is, if we do beat them the supporting public will think the right decisions was made (till fire bun we in March), if we don't beat them, "the man new, just learning the team". I still hoping we win, cause competition for places is always good.

While I agree the office is not the fortress it once was....that doesn't diminish Nicaragua's result IMO.

But.....feel free to write them off.  I wish the "home boys" well.

could we beat nicaragua with this second string pro league dominated squad? Well that's left to be seen but I won't be holding out hope, however the bigger question would be, could they beat Haiti and surename come january and possibly a number 6 central american team for th final gold cup spit? now that there is the question.

I wouldn't underestimate Nic but beating them don't mean shit...

Beating Suriname and the other team we playing for the gold cup means something and beating Mexico and panama means something ....

You can throw this rubbish matches with a depleted local team together and win but that won't fool people who have a higher level of intelligence..

Senior Men’s team completes training camp… off to Nicaragua
TTFA Media

The Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Team completed their residential training camp with an early morning  session at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium on Saturday and will depart Port of Spain for Managua, Nicaragua at 5:30pm on Sunday for its two upcoming International Friendlies against the Nicaragua Senior Team on December 27th and 30th.

Saintfiet was in good spirits as he spoke about the preparations so far ahead of what will be his first international assignment since taking up the position of head coach earlier this month.

I am very satisfied. It’s a big opportunity for me as a new coach, not having much time to see a lot of league matches, to train the boys and you can teach them your tactics and I have seen a lot of improvement. We started about six days ago and the boys are very committed and working very hard to improve,” Saintfiet told TTFA Media.

“We need to get the spirit back. It will be a very difficult task in Nicaragua because they are also a good team and they are preparing for the Copa Centroamericana,” he added.

Commenting on the training schedule during the holiday period and being away from home from Christmas day until New Year’s Eve, Saintfiet stated “I think the players coped very well with that, They are very professional minded. They know this is important for the country. We are not here for ourselves, We are in the first place to defend Trinidad and Tobago, to qualify for the Gold Cup and in the later stage for the World Cup.

“We are here on a mission and even if you have duty, there are people working all over the world who will not be with their families. We are professional football players. We know this is very important for the country.

“After the training today, the players are released. They go to their families and can enjoy the time with their families for more than 24 hours and tomorrow (Sunday) in the late afternoon we will fly to Nicaragua, I think everyone will still have a little bit of Christmas feeling but the focus on football will not be far away,” Saintfied said.

“If you want to be professional, you have to cope with that. In Europe, in England, in Belgium, they play on Christmas day, they play in January 2nd and sometimes on January 1st, so I think it’s a choice we make as coaches and players. If you want to be in this business at the highest level sometimes you have to sacrifice some things,” Saintfiet added.

Saintfiet also made it clear that the final selection of players for the Nicaragua matches was his decision.

“I don’t like to be in the media every day. I think it’s not needed to always have discussions on what people think about the national team…we know what we are doing,” he said.

“It is very clear that when I arrived here I had only a short period of time so I consulted with people with my knowledge of how I want to play. They were informed what type of players I was looking for and I watched a lot of games. The final selection that will go to Nicaragua is one hundred percent my choice.

“I decided which players I wanted to select and I was very clear when I met the players that from Tuesday we go into camp and players who decide to go and play for their club, they will not be selected for the national team (for the training camp and matches vs Nicaragua). So in that way, it was not my choice who was not in the camp because they decided not to be in camp but the full selection is naturally very clear – my choice in consultation with my technical team but the final decision is the head coach’s”.

The squad got time off on Saturday evening and will re-assemble on Sunday evening for the flight to Nicaragua via Panama City.

TTFA Vice President Ewing Davis will travel with the contingent as Chef de Mission and Technical Director Muhammad Isa will also accompany the team for the two matches.

For a long time I wanted to see our players from the Pro League play together,it's the only way we will know how good they are,it's the way to build a team,we may or may not beat Nic,we do know they have played some good teams and had some good results. The real point is,how will those local boys perform, winning will be nice but it's not that important, but how the new boys come out of it,some good and solid performances by them will be most important for the future, especially the Hex,remember Cummins, there could be another one just waiting.
Happy Christmas to all my Trini people and not forgetting Tobago, lets hope 2017 will be a better and brighter place for all my people.[/

T&T take on Nicaragua in first friendly in Managua
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s team will head into action at 8:30pm TT time (6:30pm in Nicaragua) on Tuesday against the Nicaragua senior men’s team in the first of a two-match friendlies series at the National Stadium in Managua.

The T&T squad arrived in Managua just before midnight on Sunday before checking into the Hotel Barcelo in the capital. Head Coach Tom Saintfiet was scheduled to conduct a training session at 6:30pm at the match venue on artificial surface of which the two games will be played.

India-based forward Cornell Glen, a member of this country’s 2006 World Cup squad, joined the team on Sunday and traveled with the contingent to Managua. US-based midfielder Kevan George will arrive here on Tuesday.

Saintfiet spoke ahead of tomorrow’s game.

“It’s always special and it’s an honour to be national team coach of any country and Trinidad and Tobago is naturally a big football nation. So it’s now a new start, a fresh start and we are going to use these two matches against Nicaragua to prepare our team for the Gold Cup and later on for the World Cup qualifiers,” Saintfiet told TTFA Media at Hotel Barcelo on Monday.

“It won’t be easy matches. Nicaragua is also a strong football country. In the last games of the World Cup qualifiers they beat Jamaica at home 3-2 and in the last year they also won friendly matches against Cuba 5-0 and Panama 1-0. They have a strong selection at this moment in time. It won’t be easy for us but I’m going to use it and we are going to try and get a decent result,” he added.

“Naturally you wants always a good result but I don’t think at the moment that’s the most important thing,” Saintfiet said. “ We could win both matches against Nicaragua and lose i the qualifiers for the Gold Cup and World Cup so I would prefer to win the World Cup qualifiers and if possible the Gold Cup qualifiers but on the other side if you play a game, you play to win.

“Most important for me is to see tomorrow a team which understands the tactical concept that I want, which can implement it on the pitch, which can play disciplined and which can have both offensive and defensive tasks of what I request. If that results in a good result I will be happy coach and if that doesn’t result in a good result I will be still satisfied if I see what we did in practice,” Saintfiet added.

Former Sunderland player Carlos Edwards, another member of the 2006 World Cup squad, has been named as the team captain for these upcoming matches. He is expecting Nicaragua to be strong test for the current T&T squad.

“So far things have been really productive. We’ve been put through our paces. He’s started off on the right foot, making sure the players are fit and ready for the game and also to have a nice little bond. He called the camp in the right time so that the players can get to know each other,” Edwards said.

“It’s a big privilege to wear the captain’s armband. Yes I will have a bit of responsibility. I think he has chosen me because of the experience and to have me put my arms around the younger guys and lead them in the right direction. At the end of the day everyone has to pull their weight. They just can’t look up to me and think I will orchestrate everything. I am here for one reason which is to make the country and the team successful once again,” Edwards added.

The current T&T team has newcomers in W Connection’s Maurice Forde and Club Sando’s Akeem Roach while Jabloteh duo of Tyrone Charles and Nathan Lewis, Alvin Jones and Hashim Arcia are also back in the squad after having a short stint in the past. The likes of Carlyle Mitchell, Aubrey David, Radanfah Abu Bakr, Jomal Williams, Shahdon Winchester, Hughtun Hector Trevin Caesar, Daneil Cyrus, Cornell Glen and Kevan George will be expected to carry the team.

The Opponents

Nicaragua’s biggest achievement has been qualification for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup after they defeated Guatemala 3-2 to advance to the prestigious regional tournament. And in the preliminary phase of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, they led Jamaica 3-0 at one point in Kingston, eventually winning 3-2 but had the deficit overturned in the return leg.

They are captained by 27-year-old midfielder Juan Barrera who plays for Guatemalan club CSD Comunicaciones. Their squad for the two games also includes forward Bryan Bonilla of Costa Rican club Sporting San Jose and Spain-based striking duo Carlos Chavarria (Futbol Alcobendas Sport) and Jaime Moreno (Cultural Deportivo Leonesa). Nicaragua is preparing for the Central American Cup (Gold Cup qualifiers) where they face Honduras on January 13th, Panama, Costa Rica, Belize and El Salvador.

PREVIEW: Nicaragua vs Trinidad and Tobago – Snippets from the Opposing Bench
By Chambi Sey

Although the profile of the Nicaraguan national team is rising, Nicaragua is not a particularly known commodity to followers of the game in Trinidad and Tobago. This article is presented to enlighten Trinidad and Tobago fans about the opposing players, and the present currents shaping and surrounding the Nicaraguan team, in anticipation of the twin international friendlies scheduled for December 27 and December 30 in Managua.

Nicaragua commenced training on December 12 and trained through December 22. Before they closed camp on Thursday, players and staff switched gears by visiting children in hospital to present gifts and bring holiday cheer. Being mindful of social responsibility is an important lesson for these players, and it is an activity that the national team executes periodically in solidarity with the nation’s humble economic realities. The squad regroups on Boxing Day.

I

Originally, twenty-five players were announced in the training squad, but at least one other player (Bismarck Veliz, Chinandega FC) has been integrated into preparations by head coach, Henry Duarte Molina. Veliz is a 23-year-old left back who received his first cap a year ago. He has amassed six caps, including two from Nicaragua’s most recent friendlies versus Honduras and St. Kitts-Nevis. Veliz once was part of the national U-20 framework.

Also on the radar, but not named on the announced list, is Spain-based Jaime Moreno Ciorciari who is a 21-year-old Malaga reserve player on loan to Cultura Leonesa, a third division club. Moreno, a center forward, is a former Venezuela U-20 who is eligible to represent Nicaragua through his father. Presumably his decision to cast his lot with Nicaragua is based on the immediate probability of returning to international football.

In addition to Venezuelan citizenship, Moreno holds Italian citizenship, but there is no imminent or long-term prospect of the Azzurri seeking his services. At the South American U-20 Championship in Uruguay, Moreno was used sparingly off the bench and was not pressed into action as a starter until Venezuela’s final group stage match, when exit from the tournament had been established by the result of the preceding match. To his credit, he scored – albeit versus a Uruguayan lineup adjusted to rest players for the succeeding round. Moreno has not commanded the attention of Venezuelan selectors since then.

Ironically, that goal was the only goal Venezuela scored during the tournament. When players emerge in such circumstances, it is difficult to form firm conclusions. However, inferences may be made, based on the progress of their peers. The player who restricted Moreno’s time on the pitch at the U-20 tournament is today a Sampdoria player on loan in the Swiss Super League. That player (Andres Ponce) is roughly two calendar years younger than Moreno, and has progressed to the Venezuelan senior team. Indeed, several players are ahead of Moreno on Venezuela’s depth and preference chart. Were his declaration of allegiance to Nicaragua a ploy to alert Caracas to impending danger, it would likely fall on deaf ears. Nonetheless, having witnessed the poise with which he latched on to a ball played over the top, and the composure with which he shrugged off the attention of four defending players to slot home, Moreno Ciorciari would present a useful weapon in Nicaragua’s assembling arsenal.

II

When the squad reconvenes, Daniel Cadena, a 29-year-old Spanish-born, naturalized Nicaraguan who plays third tier football in the Icelandic second division, could be present. Cadena was on
Trinidad and Tobago soil in February of this year, representing Atlántico FC from the Dominican Republic versus W Connection in the CFU Club Championship, during a heated affair won 4-2 by the hosts. Cadena, based on his tweets, has his bags packed. However, his arrival in Managua seems dependent on a federation cost-benefit analysis. Airfares over the holiday period are not cheap. Under Henry Duarte, Cadena largely has been ignored. The coach was in office nine months before he called Cadena, and in the year since then, the player has returned to the margins.

Should Cadena feature prominently, it would likely be in the second of the friendlies. He is considered a secondary striker who offers options on the left flank, the flank to which he is naturally oriented. He has accumulated seven caps, with a solitary 90-minute contribution that dates to September 2014.

Juan Barrera, the first locally-developed player to sign with a European club, joined the squad a week after the training camp began. One of few players based abroad, he had permission to report to the team on December 26 because his club was involved in the final stages of the Guatemalan Apertura championship. However, due to Comunicaciones’ December 11 loss to Antigua GFC, Barrera could join the group sooner.

Having worn the captain’s armband, Barrera is considered an important player (33 caps, 6 goals). Some arguments contend he is the best player on the team. Barrera is a dominantly right-footed left winger who can play on the opposite flank or through the central channel. He was a troublesome customer in the first half versus Trinidad and Tobago in October 2015. Since then, with Comunicaciones, he has achieved the continuity that previously eluded him during disjointed stints in Panama, Venezuela and Austria (where he participated in the Europa League). However, despite the present agreeable nature of his club form, Barrera is battling for a place in the national team. His use in Guatemala varies from tactical expectations with the national team and his present challenge rests on meeting a harmony of tactical and physical expectations. In his absence, Luis Fernando Copete (27-year-old central defender with 17 caps and 3 goals) is the likely candidate to assume the captaincy. As occurred with Barrera, Copete entered camp several days after it commenced – due to his participation at the M6P Showcase in Mexico, at which American clubs reviewed prospective players.

III

Under Duarte (8-3-4 across all contests), Nicaragua’s preferred system of play is the 4-2-3-1. The system has been utilized faithfully, regardless of whether playing opponents in World Cup qualifying or international friendlies. A review of opponents faced over a two-year period indicates that Nicaragua has applied this approach against a range of systems (4-1-4-1, 4-3-3 offensive, 4-4-2 in a diamond, 4-4-2 double six and the 5-4-1 flat).

During the past year, Nicaragua’s use of a system other than the 4-2-3-1 has occurred only once. In March, they deployed a 4-3-3 defensive system when Panama presented a 4-2-3-1. Versus Trinidad and Tobago in October 2015, Nicaragua used the 4-2-3-1.

In the Duarte tenure (December 2014 to present), Nicaragua has played nine matches at home. The last occasion on which the team played back to back friendlies versus a common opponent (as is the case with the series arranged versus Trinidad and Tobago) was in December 2015, when the Pinoleros defeated Cuba 6-0 on aggregate (5-0 in the opening encounter). The team’s global home record reflects 5 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. Isolating solely for international friendlies, the home record is 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. Examining only 2016 performances, the Nicaraguans have won 1, drawn 2 and lost 2.

IV

Nicaragua has included Cyril Errington (UES - Universidad de El Salvador) in its pre-selection camp and likely for the friendlies versus Trinidad and Tobago. He is a pacy defender who plays on the right flank. Errington is adjusting well in camp and is a surging contender for a starting position. Initial conversations about bringing him into the national team took place during a recent tour of El Salvador by Nicaragua’s U-17 squad, who were accompanied by the head coach of the senior team.

Errington is a 24-year-old who made his professional debut three years ago. He did not cement a consistent place at club level until the 2015-16 season when he moved from CD Dragon to UES. Despite his club having struggled in the Salvadoran league (they finished dead last), Errington attracted attention. However, although he is a dual citizen of El Salvador and Nicaragua, he was not firmly in the plans of the Salvadoran national team. With his contract having ended, and UES having owed players wages in recent months, a playing platform with Nicaragua offers Errington the opportunity to impress a broader audience during the Copa Centroamericana, and on which to seek greater security each payment cycle.

Errington is the grandson of Cyril Errington Diaz, a Nicaragua-born naturalized Salvadoran who played baseball professionally and represented El Salvador.

V

Oscar Urroz and Byron Bonilla – players who left Nicaragua in their youth – are also included in the training squad. Both moved from Nicaragua to Costa Rica as boys. Many Nicaraguan families move to Costa Rica because of work opportunities.

Urroz was at one time considered for the Costa Rica U-20 national team, but reportedly could not at the time produce documentation that would have asserted Costa Rican citizenship. As is the case of Errington, Urroz and Bonilla are receiving their first call-ups to the national setup.

Urroz and Bonilla play at Sporting San Jose in the second tier of Costa Rican football. However, since their arrival in Nicaragua both players have experienced differing fortunes. While Bonilla played the first half of the national team’s preparation match versus Municipal Liberia on Sunday, December 18, Urroz was dismissed from the training squad prior to the match for indiscipline – the consequence of a rash tackle during training. Although his chance of national selection has been squandered, his presence in Nicaragua has earned him a prospective contract with Managua FC (who finished two spots above the relegation zone in the LNF).

Municipal Liberia is a Costa Rican top flight team engaged in pre-season preparation for the 2017 Clausura. Their tour of Nicaragua featured two warmups. The first versus the national team and the second against local club, Walter Ferretti. Assessment of the preparation match points to Bonilla as having been the most dangerous Nicaraguan player on display. He created multiple threatening situations that the Municipal Liberia defense treated with cynical fouls to disrupt Nicaragua’s rhythm. Nicaragua lost the match 1-0. The winning goal was converted in the 80th minute.

Five minutes before the deadlock was broken, goalkeeper, Diedrich Tellez (33 years old, 5 caps) saved a penalty which he read handily. All of Tellez’s national team matches have been friendlies. He was not the starting keeper of choice during World Cup qualification. However, he has started four of the five friendlies played by Nicaragua this year (against Honduras twice, Panama and El Salvador). He did not see action in the September 2016 friendly versus St. Kitts-Nevis.

Two completely different squads were used by the Nicaraguans in each half of the preparation match held on December 18. The squad used in the opening period comprised several highly probable starters for the first of the two international friendlies (Justo Lorente, Manuel Rosas, Luis Fernando Copete and Meikel Montiel, the player to whom Urroz’s ill-advised tackle was directed).

Last Thursday, before disbanding for the holiday weekend, the Nicaraguan national team held a second preparation match against Real Madriz FC (who finished in sixth place out of ten teams in the domestic league). The outcome of the second match is not known.

VI

A notable player initially excluded from the training squad is Carlos Chavarria, the co-author of an important goal in Nicaragua’s modest World Cup qualifying history: the second item in their thrilling 3-2 defeat of Jamaica in Jamaica during 2018 qualifying.

Chavarria who has had compelling performances in domestic football with Real Estelí, and garnered CONCACAF Champions League experience, departed Nicaragua to try his luck in Spanish football. The problem is that fortune-seeking has taken him to the Tercera Division, the fourth tier of Spain’s football structure. To fans of Trinidad and Tobago football who have witnessed the contributions of several heroes from the lower tiers of English football (Birchall, Lawrence et al.), the query might be: wherein does the issue lie?

However, Coach Duarte’s view holds that the inclusion of a player from the Spanish fourth tier would devalue the Nicaraguan national team. The areas of discussion that position generates should be obvious, particularly considering the participation of Atletico Madrid B and Getafe B in the same bracket of the league as Chavarria’s club, Alcobendas Sport. But is it as simple as that?

Referring to his conversation with the player, Duarte stated to the media:

“When I learned that Chavarria would play with Alcobendas, I called him to explain what I thought of his decision. I told him clearly, ‘if you want to be on the national team, do not go to a fourth division club. On the national team you have to raise the bar, not lower it’. You cannot bring a player to lower the bar. We have to be ambitious and proud. When he is in the second tier, he will be in the team.”

He continued:

“I don’t know how a Nicaraguan footballer who plays in the top flight, with a national champion club that’s qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League, could conceive of going to the fourth division of another country. He’s devaluing himself and I am not going to devalue my team. My team needs players from the first and second tiers, not from the fourth. In any event, right now he isn’t playing, nor do I have information, nor am I interested.”

In the weeks since he expressed those sentiments, wiser counsel seems to have aided Duarte in reconciling optimality with actuality. There has been a revision of position. CCH9 (on paper, Nicaragua’s answer to CR7) is to be considered for a place in the squad. In fairness to Duarte, an element of frustration stemmed not from the talented player’s departure for Spain, but from the limited action the player has seen while in Spain. Having left Nicaragua in July, Chavarria did not debut until November. His first start occurred only two weekends ago. Apart from multiple trials, his most recent complicating factor was a three-week disruption caused by the work permit application process, during which he was not in Spain. There is understandable concern that the development of a player considered the best of his generation has been impeded.

Naturally, Duarte’s opinion stimulated discussion and was not a universally supported view in Nicaragua. The Spanish Tercera Division has been the point of origination for many La Liga players. Ascribing or imputing mediocrity to it, vis-à-vis the Nicaraguan league, destabilizes one’s footing. In Spain, Chavarria has displayed a mental toughness that should serve him well as he negotiates the challenges of climbing the playing ladder. Having been at the pinnacle of the domestic league, it appears to be the correct move at an appropriately ambitious age. It allows him to be benchmarked against peers, within a system experienced in the identification and promotion of talent. There is no comparable context in Nicaragua.

VII

The “policy” regarding participation in lower league football also raises whether the treatment of Chavarria and interest in Moreno Ciorciari (the Italo-Venezuelan-Nicaraguan) are sufficiently supportable and distinguishable. By mandate, Malaga’s reserves play in the Spanish fourth division. Alcobendas Sport, Chavarria’s team, play in the fourth division. The same tier. But, by moving one tier above on loan from the reserves, Moreno still has not satisfied Duarte’s stated policy of exclusively utilizing players engaged in first or second tier football – a policy which appears to have simmered to merely being a negotiable preference.

Either way, the contrasting narratives present a case study in the caution required of coaches in rendering public pronouncements. Duarte perhaps wishes that he had treated Chavarria’s future tactfully, rather than to have set rigid, public parameters only to erode them with retractive spin. He says his stance has not altered because Chavarria is not guaranteed selection and merely has been called to camp for observation. However, that declaration is hollow because it applies to all players in camp. It is also slightly disingenuous because the Nicaraguan public can sense the coach and player creeping to a rapprochement concluding in Chava’s return to the field.

Although Duarte’s tendency has been to speak frankly about infrastructural deficiencies and the need to professionalize the internal culture of Nicaraguan clubs, by litigating this issue in public, the Costa Rican manager unintentionally rendered a public indictment of the domestic league, when clearly, he is invested in improving and protecting Nicaraguan football. It is a particularly intriguing conversation to have, at a time when Nicaragua has plummeted twenty-five places in the FIFA Rankings released on December 22, because Duarte, when speaking to the media, invoked Nicaragua’s standing in the rankings as a reason why involving players from the fourth division would be unacceptable:

“The Nicaraguan team ranks first for me, and is ranked between the second and third tiers of the best national teams. I can’t ever call players who play in the fourth division. The fourth division in Spain isn’t anything. You have to raise the bar.”

Chavarria was a member of the Nicaraguan contingent that left Port of Spain with a scoreless draw in October 2015. Prior to Spain, he played his football with Real Estelí.

VIII

Real Estelí is the dominant team in Nicaragua’s domestic league. Several the players involved in preparations for the friendlies either are on Estelí’s books or have been on Estelí’s books. Perhaps this presents Nicaragua with the prospect of exploiting formed playing relationships within and across team units. For Trinis, it could either blunt or provoke probing whether mischief yielded a comparable preponderance of current or former players from T&T Pro League club, W Connection, in the national squad.

Real Estelí is the most successful club in Nicaragua. Historically, in Trinidad and Tobago, a similar claim has been made north of San Fernando and south of Port of Spain. However, these days it’s being made by two clubs with a common geography, but opposing interests.

IX

In Managua, tickets for both matches are being promoted at prices the equivalent of $55 TT for the two-game package, and $35 TT for attendance at one match.

With both matches slated for the national football stadium, and that venue being the home ground of several teams in the Nicaraguan league, turnout at the 20,000-capacity stadium should be notable, but not exceptional. Attendance during World Cup qualifying moved from 4,000 (versus Anguilla) to 8,000 (versus Suriname) to 18,000 (versus Jamaica). As an opponent, Trinidad and Tobago should inspire attendance in the middle range of these figures or better.

The most recent occasion on which a meeting between teams from Nicaragua and Trinidad and Tobago took place was the July 23, 2016 battle between San Juan Jabloteh and Real Estelí, during the CONCACAF U-13 Champions League in Mexico City. San Juan Jabloteh prevailed 2-1.

Despite the climate of cynicism enveloping Trinidad and Tobago football, all Trinbagonians should be pulling for no reversal in outcome versus Nicaraguan opposition.

What's the purpose of the friendly towards GC qualification and Hex? This is wasting time and money if you're running out players who have 0 future on the field for us.

This dude cannot be serious. So many young players to break in and we courting pensioners?

Nicaragua's Starting XI:

Lorente
Rosas
Copete
Casco
Quijano
Pinel
Lopez M.
Cadena
Peralta
Garcia
Lazo

The lineup function does not permit the 4-2-3-1 ... so the best next thing graphically is the 4-5-1. Lopez and Peralta are the DMs.

I will reserve judgement until the next game because they improved in some areas in the 2nd half.
Don't see why this group of players can't beat Nicaragua if the coach gets his selection and tactics sorted  ;D

Why o why did SH insist on Cyrus in right back and how Carlos was so far off the radar  ???
That probably the biggest flaw for the WCQ.

Sorry but that first goal is NO fault of Saintfeit at all. That is due totally to the fault of poor tactical and technical skills on the part of the individual players. The man was left unmarked and he capitalised. Generally throughout the game T&T players never pressed and instead ball watched. All this shows is that the TT Pro-League players are of poor quality and aren't ready for this level.
I had high hopes for him but Jomal is turning out to be  a next Guerra - much ado about nothing. Either he's happy with the level he's at in the Mexican 2nd division or he has reached his peak personally. Alvin Jones again is not ready to push on, comfortable in his surroundings.
Daniel Cyrus, no matter what position he plays has seriously regressed and can't go any further without some divine intervention.
Aikim Andrews missed his flight because his passport expired and he didn't know. WTF??!! He not serious about life at all.
Still an all-round poor showing by the team where players had a chance to stake a claim. Again it shows that Hart was right to stick with the core he had established which also had a negative effect in players becoming comfortable and complacent leading to indiscipline etc.
Them fellas ent playing like is last chance saloon at all.

Ent boy??!! Not only them used to grouse eh but forumites, local coaches and administrators did too. I personally don't think they respect their craft as they should. This wasn't even any great opposition that rolled them over but these teams take pride in themselves and will put their lives on the line for their country. That was something that was happening up to last year and we seriously regressed thinking all opposition is a walk over as if them ent coming out to play and win too.

I see it more a lack of composure, a quality player always looks like he has time to play, that extra split second. Our players seem to fumble and stumble and always look rushed in their play which impacts the decision of the play whether it be a pass or a cross or a shot. Jomal is a culprit as well. For me is more of a mental thing and managing him. As others have seen he has raw talent, i don't think its a plateau rather than he is just stunted at the moment.

This is bigger than the player. Team travel is an enterprise. It is the duty of administrators and managers to ensure that t's are crossed and i's dotted. You do an inventory and if you realise that the player is not travel-ready, source a replacement, unless you are in a position to arrange expedited issuance of a travel document.

As I recall, this is NOT the first passport fiasco. The TTFA, across administrations, has been on notice that this is a recurring issue. It's not difficult to fix.

Lehwe call it what it is: absurd. Inexcusable. Not acceptable. Not professional. Irresponsible. Nonsense.

Yup I totally agree, that game was rubbish, we still playing savannah football, no effort, no display of tactical awareness. I am sorry but the speed of the International game is far beyond what we are doing, and we will be destroyed come March. 4-3-2-1 is not for us because we do not have the quality players needed to take on defenders one on one.  I am hoping that once we can field our core players, cato, jones, molino, hyland, bateau that we could have a decent showing!

We will judge Saintfiet when he gets all the usual players,Molino,J.Jones,Hyland,Bateau and the rest,I am hoping to hear or see some improvement in the second match,I also think there's a place for Tristan Hodge, nice hard working player, should be a regular.

I thought you in favour of a "local based" core of Pro League players for the national team?

You just name 5 "and the rest".  What's your "core"?  2?

Yep he sure did. I am really happy to see this squad shape and the player selection. I like the tactical change - much needed, not everyone is Mexico there is alot of grind soccer these days from the likes of Panama, Honduras, Costa rica and for sure USA. This game was super duper importante - it shows there is a tremendous amount of work still to be done in order to fine tune this team to possibly get results in our upcoming home games. Forget about WCQ - the Gold Cup is far more important and realistic. If you are judging our new coach - it has to be via qualifying for Gold Cup. Teams like Haiti and Suriname with all due respect should never have an edge over us b.c our pro league is far more superior to theirs, they have won vs us in the past with some clever tactics and good call ups - like Millein from India etc.

Lets hope the guys show the same heart and determination in the next game on friday this will give us valuable information on this team.

palos]I didn't ever mean to play all home grown players for all matches, if they are good enough then use them, but we must use our home boys as much as we can in certain matches. We must try to give those boys some international exposure, it's how they learn and gain the composure required. That I feel will be the way to rebuild so when the overseas can't make it, we at least have some players with international experience.

Captain Carlos stays positive as T&T look for better result in second outing.

Veteran right back and current Trinidad and Tobago captain Carlos Edward spoke on the morning after this country’s 2-1 defeat to Nicaragua at the National Football Stadium in Managua on Tuesday.

He reflected on the performance of Tom Saintfiet’s team, saying that there were positives to take from the affair and he is getting a good feel about the commitment from the players as they continue to work towards finding the right momentum with the system of play that Saintfiet wants them playing.

Andrews, Davis belatedly join T&T.
T&T Newsday Reports.

NATIONAL MIDFIELDER Aikim Andrews and Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFA) first vice-president Ewing Davis were expected to join the T&T team in Nicaragua last evening, ahead of tomorrow’s second friendly international against the Central American nation.

The duo were stuck in Trinidad on Tuesday while the national squad fell to a 2-1 loss in the first friendly, at Managua.

Andrews was unable to leave with the T&T team on Sunday due to an expired passport while Davis remained in Trinidad for undisclosed reasons.

“I’m on my way now and Andrews is on his way also. Somebody needs to be there to make sure that players are managed (properly), there were some issues,” Davis said.

T&T try to reverse result in second friendly vs Nicaragua
TTFA Media

With the final squad for the upcoming Caribbean Cup fifth place and Gold Cup playoffs to be determined on the weekend, head coach Tom Saintfiet will be making a final assessment of his players currently in Managua as Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s team take on Nicaragua in the second of the two-match series at the National Football Stadium from 8:30pm TT time on Friday.

T&T lost the first match 2-1 on Tuesday night with Defence Force forward Hashim Arcia getting the lone second half goal for the visitors. Saintfiet will have the option of selecting US-based midfielder Kevan George and W Connection’s Aikim Andrews who arrived in Managua on Wednesday night along with Chef de Mission Ewing Davis. Andrews trained with the rest of the squad on Thursday morning at the game venue while George trained both on Wednesday and Thursday. Defender Aubrey David sat out Thursday’s session with a slight ankle injury.

T&T are preparing for Gold Cup playoff matches on January 4 and 8th against Suriname and Haiti at the Ato Boldon Stadium. Haiti is currently in Trinidad engaged in a training camp ahead of those playoff matches.

Saintfiet has indicated that he could make changes to the starting team for Friday’s affair.

“It could be that there be some changes in the squad and there could be some tactical changes because Kevan George is now in and Aikim Andrews also arrived from Trinidad. The aim is still to prepare the team for Suriname and Haiti and then later Panama and Mexico, The main target is not a result but a good preparation as we have to qualify for Gold Cup and World Cup” Saintfiet told TTFA Media.

“But it would be nice that for our players, for the hard work that they have put in, the discipline and commitment they have, will get a good result on Friday. I really hope this for the boys because they have done everything for the country. Until now I think the players who played on Tuesday and the others will do everything to be ready,” he added.

Forward Cornell Glen is hoping to play a positive role and spur on the rest of the squad.

“I felt good being back. it’s a young team with a lot of new faces, a new coach with different tactics but all in all it was good for me being back and playing with the boys again,” said Glen.

“I kept playing and I stayed positive over the years. Hopefully in the next game I can get some more playing time and I show the coach what I can still offer. Coach (Saintfiet) is a very disciplined coach and there is not a lot of room for improvisation. Being experienced, it’s rather easy for me to fit in and adapt to his system. I understand the coach because I play with a Dutch coach right now  at club level and the system is a bit similar so it’s rather easy for me to fit in and get going with the team,” Glen added.

“We have to stay focused and confident that we can still achieve and realise our ambitions of Gold Cup and World Cup qualification. We have a lot of players to come in still and I think once we can gel and fit in with the coach’s tactics then we can definitely be successful again,” Glen said.

“The coach is in a bit of an experimental stage right now and people on the outside looking in maybe thinking hey, we lost to Nicaragua and that is unacceptable but at the same time we are working on new stuff and trying a new system and that’s what it’s all about right now.”

Tickets for the upcoming Gold Cup playoff matches are now on sale at all Lotto Locations nationwide. There are three in one season tickets for the three matches costing $$100 for adults and $45 for children. Single match tickets cost $50 for Adults and $20 for children. TTFA Season Pass holders can access the games at no additional cost. Those TTFA Season Passes which includes access to the World Cup qualifiers also, are available at First Citizen’s Banks nationwide.

Contro keep doing yuh ting. People go be vex. But dont study that.

Is there a way we could rally the public and other stakeholders around a campaign to oust Dictator John Williams? Maybe I sounding too idealistic.. But dictators and presidents in the past have stepped down from public pressure. Dictator John Williams is a small fry compared to the others. Based on what I have seen since the Hart sacking (or part ways), Dictator John Williams has a very low approval rating. However, even if he was asked to leave, that megalomaniac will not.

I hope they win tonight and play better.
Will see what Cornell can do and if anyone else shows themselves to be up for higher level opposition/bigger games.

Outright dropping KJ still makes no sense to me unless it was strictly for these two games.
They getting creative finding a new position for Cyrus but what about doing the same for Kenwyne or letting him get his chance in training and warm up matches and decide then if he starting, on the bench or being dropped.

The next thing is....are we going into them Gold Cup games with a starting lineup mostly from this bunch or a whole setta players who not in this squad going to be starting?
Clearly this coach doesn't get off to a fast start.

Hell to pay if we miss the gold cup  :cursing:

Very good sign so far with a definite improvement, and again I have to ask,why has it taken so long to get Cornel Glen in our squads, they must be mad.I hope to see him on our starting lineup even when and if KJ comes back.I hope we can find 2 or 3 players in these encounters to use for the battles to come.

Sadly, Nicaragua still has a very good chance of making it to the Gold Cup ... Remember, Guatemala is ineligible for international competition so all the teams play in one "bracket" plus there's a playoff spot. So with 6 nations, 4 advance directly then 5th place in de playoff. Belize and Nicaragua will likely battle that out.

This is an issue raised on the forum some time back* ...  (http://www.socawarriors.net/forum/index.php?topic=63901.0)playing him in an advanced role. Some were in favour, others didn't buy it. Sinking that, might have been helpful to his cause.  :P

The reality could be that he is viewed to be less of a defensive liability in this position than where he played previously.

Sure to stimulate debate. Nothing that rings "yes". But an interesting decision. Wonder if Connection will follow suit?

*There's a midfield role discussion on another thread.

Is this supposed to be the justification for Pro League players?

Beating 124 ranked Nicaragua is not an accomplished, don't you realize how bad it was to lose to them two days ago.

Have some standards and pride for damn sake. Celebrating this is DAMN embarrassing

Cornell should have been a permanent fixture on this team.

The ref for this game was a clown!

Welcome Jerome to big man football, when is the christening them?? Sheesh!!!!

Passport Boy scored ah goalaso!!!

It's an embarrassment to have that overweight guy running onto the field to tend to injured players..:it just is.

I'm glad he's using Cyrus in midfield so now I know he has absolutely no chance of playing when we have our full squad.

Quick, who -- realistically -- thought for a friggin second that Cyrus was going to score on that breakaway? Exactly!
The man had a chance to shush his detractors -- including me!!! -- but as expected, no poise!

Desperate for what? To see our guys scrape out a result? If so, then so be it...but let me ask you this...in the match specifically what would you have preferred from that majority pro league team? Because our A TEAM in TRINIDAD didn't lose to that Nicaragua team, but didn't win either...now don't get me wrong, the verdict still out on coach...but...realistically speaking, 2-1 loss away, vs 3-1 win away...that cld hv been 5-1 win...I taking the 3-1...don't talk about what should be...we all know what should be...however this IS WHAT IT IS at present...

Fellas glad for the win but Frankly this is the ugliest display I've seen in a long long time.  What was Hart doing that was so terrible that you have to gut the team, drop the Captain etc.?    We don't have the internal fight to beat the teams we are gonna meet.  So from what I seeing here..  Russia doubtful.

This is a team we always had a favourable result against...

Hart had no local camps, was undermined and sabotaged from the beginning..

Nic was still trying qualify for a wc when they faced Hart.. these two matches mean nothing to them, it's warm ups outside of the FIFA calender for a team already knocked out.. two different scenarios.

They are not Mexico or panama, don't be fooled by this result, I'm happy they won but they were suppose to win from the get go..

In retrospect, these matches are of low importance to Nic.. for the dictator it's high because he has to prove he made the right choice and disguise his nonsense

For the record: We faced Nicaragua in October, 2015. Nicaragua was no longer in WC contention.

These matches are important for Nicaragua because they are building to Gold Cup qualification and because they are ranking-sensitive.

That stated, I agree with your Panama and Mexico comment.

Have we fallen so low that a 3-1 victory over Nicaragua is the resurgence of our football?

Is this supposed to be the justification for Pro League players?

Beating 124 ranked Nicaragua is not an accomplished, don't you realize how bad it was to lose to them two days ago.

Have some standards and pride for damn sake. Celebrating this is DAMN embarrassing

Nicaragua was no longer in WC contention and because they are ranking-sensitive.

These matches are important for Nicaragua because they are building to Gold Cup qualification.

You're correct, they got knocked out a month before by Jamaica.. my bad... however I still maintain that the scenario was much different to now...

When did Nic face Jamaica?

Roughly 5 to 6 weeks before we played them.
