You sure about that? There is a window for teams participating in the Gold Cup but that's all I see.

T&T to face Ecuador in Guayaquil on July 26th.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Team will face Ecuador in an international friendly in Guayaquil, Ecuador on July 26th. The affair was confirmed by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association on Tuesday night and will serve as part of the team’s build up to the September 1st World Cup qualifying match at home to Honduras.

Ecuador is currently ranked 31st on the FIFA ranking and lie in sixth position on the South American World Cup qualifying table, two points behind Argentina which they defeated 2-0 in 2018 World Cup qualifying action in Buenos Aires in October, 2015. Their next qualifying match is away to Brazil on August 31st. Ecuador has appeared in three FIFA World Cups.

T&T will host Honduras on September 1st before traveling to Panama City to take on Panama four days later.

Head Coach Dennis Lawrence indicated that the outing on July 26th will give him a chance to assess the available players.

“The game versus Ecuador is another step in our preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifying match against Honduras” Lawrence told TTFA Media.

“The game is against a good South American opposition and I expect it to be good for us. It will give us an opportunity to assess those players who are selected and provides us valuable game time in a period when some of our other Concacaf opponents are also involved in international matches,” he added.

T&T have not played Ecuador at the senior international level  but drew 1-1 with them at the Under 23 level when both countries met at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara in 2011. Current T&T members Kevin Molino, Sheldon Bateau, Joevin Jones and Mekeil Williams appeared in that encounter.

At the moment, the TTFA is in negotiations with another Spanish-speaking country for the staging of an additional international warm-up to be played in Trinidad in August.

Equatorial Guinea is a oil producing country, and like I said has some money. DJW must have some kind of business contact there. Who knows. He wanted the MNT to play them, but Hart decline because they had just come back from the China tour. That is where he and Hart fall out.

Clarke called to national team for Ecuador friendly.
FC Santa Rosa Release.

FC Santa Rosa and captain, Keron Clarke, has been invited by Senior Men's National Team (SMNT) head coach, Dennis Lawrence, to train with the team ahead of its friendly match against Ecuador in Guayaquil on 26 July. FC Santa Rosa received the TTFA's official letter of invitation this morning.

Lawrence was in attendance on 2 July at the Velodrome when Santa Rosa dismantled Club Sando 7:0, led by a Clarke hat-trick. The national coach took another look at Clarke on 9 July as the Big Cannons whipped WASA FC, with the Santa Rosa hit man obligingly hitting a double. Clarke scored seventeen goals for Santa Rosa in 2016 and has already bagged seven in the Big Cannons' four 2017 TT Super League matches.

The invitation to Clarke is an historic development as Super League players have previously been ignored in the selection of the Trinidad and Tobago SMNT. FC Santa Rosa has long championed the quality of Super League players, and the club congratulates Dennis Lawrence for his openness and bravery in making this call. Santa Rosa looks forward to more TTSL players being given the opportunity to train with, and to be selected to the SMNT.

The national team travels to Guayaquil on 24 July and returns on 27 July,

TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Dennis Lawrence has named a provisional training squad to begin preparations on Monday for the upcoming international friendly against Ecuador scheduled for July 26th in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Among the 25 players are eight players who  were on the roster for the two previous World Cup qualifiers  against United States and Costa Rica. Those players include Carlos Edwards, Curtis Gonzales,Hashim Arcia, Leston Paul, Marvin Phillip, Hughtun Hector, Nathan Lewis, Alvin Jones and Triston Hodge.

Forward Keron Clarke of TT Super League club FC Santa Rosa is a first timer while Carlyle Mitchell and Willis Plaza are also included. And there has been a recall for midfielder Keon Daniel who has not been in a national team selection since 2013, his last appearance coming in a 2013 Gold Cup quarter final clash with Mexico in Atlanta.

“We’ve invited twenty five players to be part of the training squad and we’ll work with them from this coming Monday before finalising the team to travel to Ecuador. We’ll get in a few days of preparation at home for the match,” Lawrence told TTFA Media.

“We have available to us some of the players who were involved for the two previous games against the US and Costa Rica and we’ve invited a few others to have a look at and see how they respond to what we are requiring of them,” Lawrence added.

There are players who were not considered due to club commitments as the International Friendly is being played outside of the FIFA window.

T&T will face Honduras in a 2018 World Cup Qualifier at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva from 8pm on Friday September 1st and will travel to Panama City to square off with Panama four days later in another qualifier for Russia 2018.

TTSL LEADING SCORER GETS NATIONAL TEAM CALL UP

http://ttsuperleague.com/ttsl-leading-scorer-gets-national-team-call/ (http://ttsuperleague.com/ttsl-leading-scorer-gets-national-team-call/)

“Prior to this (call up), Super League players didn’t have a chance. I hope this would open the window.”

Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) leading goal scorer Keron Clarke was elated to receive his maiden call up to the Trinidad and Tobago Senior National Men’s Provisional Squad which will be preparing for a friendly international against Ecuador on 26 July 2017 in Guayaquil.

The FC Santa Rosa hotshot has already bagged 7 goals so far this season, including an immensely impressive hat trick against Club Sando Moruga and is hoping that his form continues into his time with the National Team.

“I’m off to a flyer right now! The goals are coming in and hopefully the form will overflow into the national team stint,” a brimming Clarke told TTSL Media.

He continued, “last season was a bit tougher, the goals were few and far between. But this season has been good and I just want to thank God. Its only through him that I have the talent and everything. ”

“And now, it’s a privilege just to get a call up…just even to be considered.”

Clarke has been a dominant force at the heart of FC Santa Rosa’s chase to win back to back league titles and the “Big Cannons” currently sit three points off of leaders Guaya United who have played a game more.

FC Santa Rosa Founder and Head Coach Keith Look Loy was equally ecstatic at his captain’s call up and even more so, what it represents in terms of opportunities for players in the TTSL.

“This is huge for the club and the TTSL”  commented Look Loy. “It validates the work of the former and heightens the status and image of the latter. I anticipate more TTSL players breaking through.”

These sentiments were echoed by Clarke, who sees himself as setting the foundation and becoming an inspiration for younger players in the TT Super League to aim to achieve similar opportunities.

“I want all of the Super League players, staff, coaches, everybody and especially the younger players to use this as an opportunity, ” said Clarke.

“Prior to this (call up), Super League players didn’t have a chance. I hope this would open the window, especially for younger players to work towards…who might have a chance at a career (in football).”

The 31 year old Clarke continued, “the barrier that was holding back Super League players seems to be going. I just hope that everybody recognizes this and use this as an opportunity.”

Clarke is expected to travel with FC Santa Rosa to Tobago to face winless 1976 Phoenix FC on Sunday 16 July before linking up with T&T Senior National Men’s Team Head Coach Dennis Lawrence on Monday.

Lawrence has also received glowing praise from the members of the TT Super League community for Clarke’s call up with many labeling the inclusion as surprising, but bold and refreshing.

What's the use of these friendlies if we can't have our full compliment of rust team players. this has been an all to familiar sight. every time we gave a worth while friendly we always seem to carry a complimentary squad who would not see a lick of action in competitive games, so what's the point of that?

the purpose of friendlies is to give the first team playing time together vs formidable opponents in order to right wrongs and iron out mistakes in the team but these fringe players will more than likely would not even the final 23 man squad cone september 1st.

Shock call-ups for Keon Daniel, Keron Clarke and Isaiah Hudson in T&T squad to face Ecuador.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Unattached maverick playmaker Keon Daniel, FC Santa Rosa forward Keron Clarke and teenaged W Connection attacker Isaiah Hudson were three surprise call-ups today as Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team head coach Dennis Lawrence selected a 26-man provisional squad to play Ecuador in Guayaquil on 26 July.

The friendly international is likely to be the first of three warm-up matches before the Soca Warriors tackle Honduras on 1 September and Panama on September 5 in two decisive World Cup qualifying contests.

In his short stint as head coach so far, Lawrence has already shown that he is unafraid of making bold decisions and his latest squad certainly fits the bill.

The 30-year-old Daniel, who is a free agent, has not represented Trinidad and Tobago since 15 July 2013 when he played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 Gold Cup quarterfinal loss to Mexico. By then, he was already a controversial selection by then newly appointed coach Stephen Hart.

In November 2012, Warriors head coach and former Strike Squad stand-out Hutson “Barber” Charles tried to have Daniel join his team for the Caribbean Cup qualifying round; he subsequently admitted to the media that the Tobagonian was not taking his calls—although he had played for Charles in an earlier round.

Ataullah Guerra took over the play-making mantle in Daniel’s absence and helped Trinidad and Tobago qualify for the Caribbean Cup where they booked their first Gold Cup berth in seven years.

By then, Jamaal Shabazz had been added to the Warriors’ technical staff and, as co-head coach, he talked Daniel into rejoining the team for a two-game exhibition tour to Belize and Peru in March 2013.

Daniel played against Belize and even wore the captain’s armband for part of the second half. But he surprised the staff by insisting that he be released for personal reasons before they headed to Peru—the TTFA initially claimed he had to renew his visa in Trinidad but subsequently confessed that was untrue.

As a result of Daniel’s about-turn, Trinidad and Tobago did not have a full complement of substitutes in Lima where they lost 3-0 to the hosts.

Hart gave Daniel another chance at the July 2013 Gold Cup and the player was one of the country’s best performers in the group stage. But Daniel, who was then attached to MLS team Philadelphia Union, asked to be excused from Hart’s first post-Gold Cup squad that September.

Hart responded by leaving Daniel out of his next squad before, in November 2013, he again extended an olive branch to the left-footed play-maker. Daniel agreed to play and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) sent him a plane ticket to join the squad but the player simply never showed up.

Hart never selected Daniel again and it was the last time the player was in the international frame. Until now.

Clarke, who is the Trinidad and Tobago Super League’s (TTSL) joint leading scorer with seven goals from four matches, is a surprise selection for an altogether different reason. It is the first time in four years that a lower league player has been called up to the National Senior Team.

Attacker Marcus Joseph was the last player to have that honour as he was representing Point Fortin Civic in the Southern Football Association (SFA)  in 2013 when he earned two caps under Shabazz and Charles.

Joseph was 22 years old at the time with two World Youth Cup appearances in the Korean Republic and Egypt under his belt. In contrast, Clarke is aiming to make his international debut at 31—after a journeyman lower league career that included stops at Maloney FC and WASA FC. This is his second season at Santa Rosa.

Santa Rosa coach Keith Look Loy, a former TTFA technical director and national youth team coach, commended Lawrence for his brave decision and suggested that Clarke still has plenty to offer.

“He is the Trini [James] Vardy,” Look Loy told Wired868, as he referenced the Leicester City and England striker. “[He is ageing like] fine wine. I will get another four good years from him [and] they will be his best!”

A strong forward with a clean right-foot shot, Clarke scored a brilliant scissors-kick goal against Club Sando Moruga—it marked his hattrick in a 7-0 rout—which has been the best moment of the fledgling TTSL career so far and an online hit.

Look Loy said ability and not age should be the most important factor in national selection so long as the Warriors still have a mathematical shot at the Russia 2018 World Cup.

“We need goals now,” said Look Loy, who noted that Portugal and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is enjoying a tremendous scoring run for club and country at 33. “To flip the old adage: if you’re good enough, you’re young enough.”

Lawrence did offer a chance to young talent too as there were three teenagers in his squad: Taryk Sampson (Central FC), Shane Sandy (MIC IT St Ann’s Rangers) and W Connection’s Hudson).

It is Hudson’s first involvement with a national team since his father, Brent Hudson, surprised National Under-20 coach Brian Williams by demanding his son be released in the middle of the Caribbean Cup tournament last October.

Hudson said his son was injured but Williams disagreed and the player was dropped for the January CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.

Strangely, Hudson’s call-up also ignores the fact that he does not hold down a starting berth at Connection. Earlier this year, Lawrence selected Keron Cummings in similar circumstances  despite the play-maker being a substitute at Central FC. At present, Cummings effectively plays in the local third tier after he swapped Central for Petit Valley/Diego Martin United in the second rung of the TTSL.

If Hudson, a Naparima College student, gets on the field, he will become one of the youngest players ever to represent Trinidad and Tobago—if not the youngest. His 17th birthday is on 27 July.

His progress through the ranks has been anything but smooth though. Hudson failed to shine at the Under-17 Caribbean Championship last year when the young Warriors were eliminated in the group stage, despite playing at home. And he failed to hold down a starting berth at National Under-20 level before walking out of the team.

Lawrence appears ready to give Hudson, a versatile two-footed attacker, another chance to deliver on his promise.

Carlyle Mitchell, who recently signed for India club East Bengal, returns to the team after a five-month lay-off due to injury while there were also recalls for Nathaniel Garcia, Akeem Benjamin, Sean De Silva, Tyrone Charles and Rundell Winchester. North East Stars defender Kevon Villaroel was a late addition to the original squad, which took the number of players to 26.

However, there was no place for Police FC goalkeeper Adrian Foncette and forward Jameel Perry, North East Stars defenders Yohance Marshall, W Connection attackers Neil Benjamin Jr and Marcus Joseph and veteran striker Cornell Glen.

Mexico-based forward Shahdon Winchester was also not included although his Murcielagos FC teammate Jomal Williams was selected.

The Ecuador friendly does not fall within the FIFA international calendar and, as such, most of Lawrence’s overseas-based players are unavailable.

“We’ve invited twenty-five players to be part of the training squad and we’ll work with them from this coming Monday before finalising the team to travel to Ecuador,” Lawrence told the TTFA Media. “[…] We have available to us some of the players who were involved for the two previous games against the US and Costa Rica and we’ve invited a few others to have a look at and see how they respond to what we’re requiring of them.”

Editor’s Note: North East Stars defender Kevon Villaroel was invited to join the National Senior Team in training, after his team’s 2-2 draw with W Connection on Friday 14 July.

Haven't seen Daniel in a while so I'm not sure what is his current level is at the moment. Gifted footballer when on song though, great spacial intelligence.

As per many a talented footballer in Trinidad, his head wasn't always in the game as it should.

I have to agree with pull stones, and ask the same question, what purpose does this friendly serve,if we are hoping to use 7 or 8 players from this squad then OK,but how many will play, maybe 2 or 3 if they lucky.

The counter argument will be.......is it better therefore to do nothing?

Can't accuse Lawrence of NOT giving local based players opportunities.  Something that was a source of complaint, whether accurate or not, about Coach Hart

A head coach has certain standards

One coach may say as long as you're eligible to represent T&T, I believe you have the talent, and you work hard, you will get an opportunity to play

Another coach may insist that players wishing to represent the national team be playing first team football somewhere.  If they're not playing with their clubs, they're highly unlikely to be playing on the national team.

Coach Lawrence is still figuring out who his best combination is...which is normal.  He's had less than 10 matches in charge

Coach Hart identified his best combination and once settled, it became difficult to break into the team.

Both coaches gave opportunities.  Just different standards and dare I say...circumstances

I agree with your assessment but wouldn't Tallest need to know what style of football he wants to play first? I still think he's trying to figure that out and hasn't pinned down how he wants our team to play tbh

We can't get the overseas guys, so use the locals.  I am happy for the guy from Santa Rosa. At 31 he may get a cobo sweat in one of the games. Who knows what going to happen.

Lawrence defends selections.
T&T Guardian Reports.

‘Its an open door for all players...’

Head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago senior men’s football team Dennis Lawrence has explained his policy of inclusiveness when it comes to player selection, by stating quite clearly: “The idea is that every player with a Trinidad and Tobago passport is eligible for selection in my view.”

That statement comes after Lawrence turned some heads with the selection his provisional 25-member squad to prepare for T&T’s July 26 international friendly date away to Ecuador. Included in his training squad are Poland-based professional Keon Daniel who was a no-show for several training camps and competitions under previous coaches Stephen Hart and Hudson Charles. As a result the Tobago-born Daniel has not played a single international for T&T since July 15 2013. Lawrence explained that he invited Daniel on the request of the player’s agent who notified him that the player who is now a free agent, was back at home in T&T on vacation. Lawrence said: “Keon has been in Poland for the last three years and he’s been playing in a number of different positions. Just like I did with Kwesi Weston when we were going to Denver when I was informed Kwesi was at home on vacation and I invited him to train to have a look, I’ve done the same thing with Keon. If Keon shows me this week that he is capable and he’s ready, he’s going to be like every other player, fighting for a place on the plane to go to Ecuador.”

Also among Lawrence’s selection is 31-year-old FC Santa Rosa forward Keron Clarke who has never played at national level but is the top scorer so far in this season’s T&T Super League, T&T’s second tier of club football. 16-year-old W Connection midfielder, Isaiah Hudson heads a list of younger but similarly inexperienced players such as Taryk Sampson and Shane Sandy. Lawrence justified those picks as well.

“We’ll talk about Isiah first. Our U20 players went to the Caribbean tournament under Brian Williams and since we didn’t qualify further, they’ve been inactive. So the idea now is to integrate the players who are under the age of 23 closer to the senior team because we can’t afford to let them go three or four years without being in the national set up. My idea is to bring them in so when the time comes to be involved, they have a better concept of what we want to do.”

The former assistant coach at Everton F.C in England added, “In terms of Keron Clarke, one thing about the boy that I know for sure is that he know’s how to finish, he’s a natural goalscorer. In most cases the top league is the league where the best players play but you do find the rare ones that play at another level that might be able to cope. I’ve got my questions in my head about physicality because the work in the Super League is different. But I thought to myself the only way I can answer these questions is this Ecuador friendly. So it’s an open door for all players.”

Like Daniel, Hudson comes into the head coach’s plans with a serious cloud over his head regarding his dedication after he allegedly abandoned his national under 20 team-mates at last October’s Caribbean Cup tournament at the request of his father who insisted that his son was injured, contrary to the argument of head coach Williams.

“Whatever has happened to Keon and whatever has happened with Isiah did not happen with me. Everybody knows my policy is that we need to respect each other, we need to maintain discipline throughout and as long as they can conform to what I am asking and to what I think is the right thing then we wouldn’t have a problem.”

Lawrence noted that it was important for the local based players to grasp the opportunity being given to them in this upcoming match against Ecuador by working hard and having belief in themselves.

He stated that he was satisfied with the way the players had responded in the team’s first session on Monday.

Lawrence: Daniel, Hudson given chance to prove themselves.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

MIDFIELDERS Keon Daniel and Isaiah Hudson, two players who have chequered careers with various national teams, will be given the chance to prove themselves to national men’s coach Dennis Lawrence, as he expands his talent pool ahead of the forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Honduras and Panama in September.

Lawrence was speaking at a media briefing yesterday morning at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima.

The national men’s team, consisting mostly local-based players are currently in training ahead of a friendly international, away to Ecuador, on July 26.

Daniel, who is currently a free agent has not earned a national call-up since November 2013, when he declined an offer from then men’s coach Stephen Hart to join the squad for a friendly international away to Jamaica.

Hudson, on the other hand, was left out of the T&T team for the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in Jamaica after a fall-out with coach Brian Williams, during the 2016 Caribbean Cup in Curacao.

Lawrence, the ex-national defender, pointed out, “Whatever has happened to Keon and whatever has happened to Isaiah has not happened with me.

“Everybody knows my policy that we need to respect each other, we need to maintain our discipline throughout. And as long as they can conform to what I am asking and what I think is the right thing, then we wouldn’t have a problem.” Referring to the enigmatic Daniel, Lawrence noted, “(Daniel’s) agent contacted me.

We know that he was home on vacation so I invited him to be part of the training sessions so I can assess him and see how he is.” He added, “Every player that has a Trinidad and Tobago passport is available for selection in my view.

Keon has been in Poland for the last three years. He’s been playing in a number of different positions. If Keon shows me this week that he’s capable and he’s ready, he’s going to be, like every other player, fighting for a place to go on the plane to go to Ecuador.”

About the Hudson selection, Lawrence said, “Since (the Under-20 Championships), they’ve not been involved in (a) national set-up. The idea now is to try and integrate the players that are below the age of 23 closer to the senior team.

“My idea is to bring them in so they have an idea,” he continued. “So when the time comes, and it’s time to be involved with the senior team, they’ll have a better concept of what we want to do.” Another shock call up was FC Santa Rosa striker Keron Clarke, the lone non-Pro League player among the local- based bunch.

“I’ve been going to the Super League,” said Lawrence.

“One thing I know about the boy is that he knows how to finish.

He’s a natural goalscorer.

I’ve got questions in my head in terms of physicality because it’s (a different level) in the Super League. But the only way I can answer these questions is (with) the Ecuador friendly.

“It’s a position on the pitch that we need to improve on....the goalscoring aspect,” added the T&T coach. “The opportunity has come. We need to give him a try and this is the best place to do it.

And I hope that the boy does well.” Lawrence noted, “The top leagues are always the place that the best players play in. You do find the rare ones that play at a level that might be able to cope. So it’s an open door for all players.” About the make-up of the training squad, Lawrence said, “The main focus is the group that we have, mainly the Pro League players.

“We were lucky to acquire the services of (Indian-based duo) Willis Plaza (and) Carlyle Mitchell, (and Mexico- based) Jomal Williams who will join the group.

“Those are the only foreign-based players that we have,” he added.

Concerning the Ecuador match, Lawrence said, “It’s going to be a very difficult game. Ecuador is a top team in the South American (region).

But it’s going to be a great test for the boys.

They need these sort of exposure.” Trinidad and Tobago are the only team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup CONCACAF Zone Final Round Qualifiers who are not participating at the current CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States.

“It would have been a great benefit for us if we were in the Gold Cup,” Lawrence admitted.

“I think it would have been added value to our preparations.

But the benefit that I’ve took out of it is that at least the players are actively playing in the Pro League. We’ve managed to acquire this friendly against Ecuador and we’re trying to see how we can be more prepared for the Honduras game.”

Lawrence picks 19-man squad for Ecuador Friendly.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago senior men head coach Dennis Lawrence on Saturday finalised a 19man squad to travel to Ecuador for Wednesday’s International Friendly in Guayaquil against Ecuador’s senior men’s team.

Following six days of training sessions with a provisional squad of 25, Lawrence and his assistant coaches came down to their final selection on the weekend

Both Keon Daniel and Rundell Winchester were ruled out due to injuries sustained this week in training while Keron Clarke will not travel to Guayaquil due to failure to obtain a passport in time to travel with the team which is scheduled to depart on Monday. Efforts were made up to late on Friday to have the passport expedited but without success.

Mexican-based player Jomal Williams will also miss Wednesday’s encounter because of a club related matter as he is currently awaiting a work permit renewal. W Connection winger Neil Benjamin Jr. has been drafted into the final squad. He trained with the bunch on Saturday and will also take part in Sunday’s final session on home soil.

“We’ve got in six sessions with the group in preparation for Wednesday’s match. The response from the boys has been good and we’ve come down to the final 19 that will travel on Monday,” Lawrence told TTFA Media.

“It was also good to have had a few of the younger ones involved in the training as it would no doubt be valuable experience for them. Unfortunately we have lost two wingers, hence we’ve brought in young Neil Benjamin into the squad. We’ll have one final session in Guayaquil on Tuesday ahead of what I expect will be a solid test for us on Wednesday,” Lawrence said.

The game will take place on Wednesday night at the Estadio Banco Del Pacifico in Guayaquil.

I don't think Tallest underestimating Ecuador. The game is being played outside the Fifa window. We can't get the overseas players, you think we should not play this game? Unfortunately we not playing in the GC semis tomorrow, so this game is the next best thing. Honestly I am glad for the locals. This the time for them to show their worth. That excuse is just unacceptable at all levels. Is better they lie and say he just pick up and injury walking down the steps that come with that.

Carlos Garces, one of the forwards mentioned above will not be available to participate due to injury (abductor muscle). The 27 year old Garces is a player who was specifically lured back to Ecuadoran football from Mexico on the back of a lucrative four year contract.

After a dry patch during the initial part of the Ecuadoran football calendar (no goals in the first four matches), he ended up converting several goals to help his club win the first phase of the Ecuadoran season.

Erick Castillo, a 22 year old not initially called into the squad, receives his debut call-up to the NT.

In the short and long term this Keron Clarke call up is a waste of time. Firstly, because of the passport situation. He should have known better and had his documents up to date and in hand. However, the TTFA should have a policy whereby potential TT pro league call ups have a valid passport. Secondly, I have no hang ups with his faith but he's SDA and has emphatically stated that he will NOT play on the sabbath. Those are his religious beliefs and should be respected but he's taking someone else's space who is willing to play on a Friday/Saturday.

Clarke gets his passport… travels today to Ecuador.
TTFA Media.

Santa Rosa FC’s Keron Clarke will travel with the Trinidad and Tobago squad for Guayaquil, Ecuador later today after obtaining his passport this morning.

Clarke had been sidelined from the final 19-man squad announced by Dennis Lawrence on Saturday after unsuccessful attempts to obtain a new passport up until Friday. But there was better news for the 31-year-old forward today.

“It is a definitely a blessing for me to have received my passport this morning which now makes it possible for me to travel with the team today. I will like to thank everyone at the Immigration Office for their part today as well as the Minister, Maxie Cuffie for his input and the team management for their efforts,” Clarke told TTFA Media.

The Santa Rosa FC marksman trained with the provisional squad all of last week and described his experience as an eye opener.

“It was a new level for me because obviously coming from the Super League, the intensity is higher here and at first I had to make the adjustment but once I did that, I was able to settle in and get on with the work,” Clarke said.

“For me it’s a great blessing and to God be the Glory. At my age coming into the national team is not something that happens every day. But I am here now and I will do my best to make a positive impact and see what happens from there.

“They all welcomed me with open arms when I came into the training last week. The coaching staff have been good and the players embraced me. Everyone wants to do well out here and it ‘s a brotherhood. We’ll all be putting our best foot forward to achieve success,” Clarke added.

Good Luck. Make use of the opportunity. God Bless!

Am I the only one that thinks this Clarke romance with the national team is a bit of a waste of time?

Here is a player already stating that he will not always be available. I respect and appreciate his forthright position with respect to his faith.

I'm neutral on the Ecuador game as it's a friendly outside of the FIFA window and in the grand scheme of things means little other than fringe players to get a look in.

Religion and football has always been interlinked, particularly with Islam and players observing Ramadan and fasting but yet for the most part consistently remained available to play across the world and at the highest levels.

It's good PR.....but that's about it IMO

I not even sure that PR resonates with anyone, anywhere. The best PR as a national team coach is results, everybody will love yuh fuh dat.

The whole Clarke passport fiasco is another administrative faux paux on repeat, every team at pro league and super league should ensure all their players have valid passports as part of registration, before the season. The reason is that any player could be called up for national duty requiring travel. I could understand if every player doesn't have a visa but passports definitely.

T&T Senior Men square off with Ecuador.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior men’s Team will be looking to pull off a positive display and result when they square of with Ecuador in their first ever meeting between the two teams at international level in Wednesday night’s friendly at the Estadio Pacifico Banco in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Kick off time is 8:30pm TT time.

The T&T team arrived in Guayaquil on Monday night and was scheduled to have a training session at the match venue on Tuesday night.

Head Coach Dennis Lawrence will have a 20-man squad for the encounter as Mexican-based winger Jomal Williams obtained his Mexican work visa and has been released by the Murcielagos club for the match. The player is scheduled to join the camp in Guayaquil today.

“We will go into this game with a positive mindset and obviously looking to execute our game plan,” Lawrence said. “It’s a good test for us and again in international football there are no easy games. But this is all part of our preparations for the two World Cup qualifiers in September.”

Jabloteh winger Nathan Lewis is anticipating a strong test from the South American outfit which will comprise of several of their domestic players.

“It’s going to be a very strong test for us because every team in South America tends to play good, attacking football and that is why we are here, to get the best possible test on the day,” Lewis told TTFA Media. “We know that the bigger focus is the Honduras match but this match will give us a good chance to put our thoughts and our efforts together to get things right in time for September,” he added.

Goalkeeper Marvin Phillip is among the more experienced players in the T&T line up which includes Lewis, Hashim Arcia, Hughtun Hector, Curtis Gonzales, Leston Paul and  Triston Hodge who were in the squad for the past two World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and the United States. India-based due Carlyle Mitchell and Willis Plaza are back in the mix while newcomers Nicholas Benjamin jr and Keron Clarke will be hoping to force their way into action on Wednesday night.

“We have some new faces in the squad but all very capable of showing up with solid performances. The coach has selected a team based on what he is looking for, to add to the squad for the qualifiers in September. The preparations have gone well over the past week and I expect we will see a good brand of football and tidy performance from the team against what I expect to be a proper opponent on the night,” Phillip said.

Ecuador have qualified for three FIFA World Cups in 2002, 2006 and 2014. Their best performance came in 2006 when they advanced to the Round of 16, eventually eliminated by England. Ecuador defeated El Salvador 3-0 in their most recent friendly in June and will be away to Brazil in a World Cup qualifier on August 31st.

Title: PREVIEW: Ecuador vs Trinidad and Tobago – Realities at Ground Level
Post by: Tallman on July 26, 2017, 05:24:29 PM
PREVIEW - Ecuador v. Trinidad and Tobago – Realities at Ground Level
By Chambi Sey.

When Gustavo Quinteros’ Ecuador takes to the field versus Trinidad and Tobago in Guayaquil, the encounter will enter the history books as the first match between the nations at full international level on the men’s side of the game. However, in the Quinteros era, March 2015 to present, it will not be the first occasion on which Ecuador has faced CONCACAF opposition. Of thirty matches during his mandate, both friendly and “competitive”, Ecuador has on ten occasions engaged teams from CONMEBOL’s neighboring confederation, facing six specific CONCACAF opponents (El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama and the United States). While the latter four teams have each engaged the Ecuadorans twice, Haiti and El Salvador have played one match apiece in losing ventures versus Ecuadoran opposition (4-0 and 3-0 respectively).

The United States are the only nation from within CONCACAF to have won both of their matches against Ecuador during the period under review (a 2-1 victory during the Copa America Centenario in 2016, and a 1-0 result produced during a friendly in immediate anticipation of that tournament). Mexico, who provided Quinteros his first international opponent in March 2015, won that initial encounter, a friendly, before an effectively partisan crowd in Los Angeles, but subsequently lost to the Ecuadorans during the Copa America in Chile. In June 2015, Panama played back to back friendlies versus Ecuador in a home and away series. The Canaleros drew the opening match (1-1) but lost the following encounter by four goals to nil in the same stadium in which Trinidad and Tobago will face Ecuador tonight. Henry Gambetta Avalos, the Peruvian referee who officiated that match, has been tasked with presiding over the friendly against the Soca Warriors. It will be his 180th match since debuting in 2001.

Honduras who incurred defeats on both outings versus Ecuador (2-0) and (3-1), in the second of the two encounters, also suffered a loss at the same Guayaquil venue, despite leading 1-0 at halftime. On that occasion, Jose Francisco Cevallos (included in Ecuador’s training squad for this game) put the affair out of the reach of the visitors with an 81st minute right-footed strike. That match was Ecuador’s first international friendly for 2017. Trinidad and Tobago’s encounter versus the hosts will constitute the South Americans’ fourth international friendly of the year, but only the second on Ecuadoran soil. While Haiti succumbed to Ecuador during the Copa America Centenario, El Salvador capitulated to the Ecuadorans during one of the two international friendlies Ecuador have contested in the United States in 2017.

Ecuador’s record versus CONCACAF opponents during the Gustavo Quinteros era reflects six victories, three losses, and one draw (6-3-1). Tonight, accept it or not, Trinidad and Tobago will be tasked with bettering the on-field image of the CONCACAF football product, as viewed through the lenses of the prototypical South American fan. It will be a difficult task on a continent on which the quality of Mexican professional and national team football – an unquestioned reference of superiority within CONCACAF – is regularly dismissed and ridiculed.

In the case of Trinidad and Tobago, contemporary national team performances in South America versus Argentina, Peru and Uruguay at senior international level (3-0, 4-0, and 3-1 respectively), and unfortunate renditions during the 2015 Pan American Games in Canada against Paraguay and Uruguay (5-1 and 4-0 losses respectively) have made for challenging conversations while eliminating nascent seeds of credibility. As an example, the respectful but frontal and objective commentary of Uruguayan radio announcers during Trinidad and Tobago’s introductory appearance at the Pan American tournament embodies the harm affecting the national team product when perceptions become stereotypes and preparations are superficial, cosmetic and no deeper than sub-cutaneal. Nonetheless, one supposes, that was then and this is now and as Sinatra crooned, “what’s now is now and I’ll forget what happened then.”

The cold hard truth of the present is that although the Ecuador v. Trinidad and Tobago friendly is occurring, it is occurring as an arrangement of default, rather than as an arrangement of preference. Lamentably, Trinidad and Tobago football is not at the organizational stage at which coordinated planning and liaising of technical, administrative and resource elements permit the identification of friendly opponents with a view to consistent medium-term or long-term scheduling. Living in the short term, Trinidad and Tobago are playing Ecuador out of the good fortune provided by logistical hurdles that prevented Argentina and Ecuador from coinciding on a fixture.  Ecuador is playing Trinidad and Tobago because it could not identify interested, logistically-disposed, better opposition who possessed the wherewithal to travel to Guayaquil and because it desperately needed to identify an opponent. Some may question the assertions, but their credibility rests on comments directly attributable to the coach of the Ecuadoran national team. According to Quinteros, “the only [prospective] opponent that agreed to come was Trinidad and Tobago.” It is what it is. Reality can be imagined, but it is less easily invented.

Unlike most of the matches that have contributed to the performance record between Ecuador and its CONCACAF opponents, one of the distinguishable aspects that will characterize, and perhaps punctuate, Trinidad and Tobago’s friendly versus Ecuador is that of both teams’ reliance on home-based players. Aside from the inclusion of three foreign-based players (Jomal Williams who represents Murciélagos FC in the second flight of professional football in Mexico, and defender Carlyle Mitchell and forward Willis Plaza of East Bengal FC in India), Trinidad and Tobago’s squad will be drawn entirely from the domestic league environment. As such, if on no other occasion, the confidence expressed by Dennis Lawrence in Keron Clarke (FC Santa Rosa, Trinidad and Tobago Super League, the second tier of national football in Trinidad and Tobago) corresponds with the qualities and rationale of a match impacted by its occurrence outside of the dates reserved by FIFA for the release of players. However, it is uncertain that the Trinidad and Tobago head coach would have been as enterprising under conventional circumstances. Nonetheless, the stage and conditions are set for exploration of the degree to which the friendly constitutes a proportionately useful exercise, or merely yields repeated confirmation of methodological and technical deficiencies in our training environments, and a chorus of the familiar indictments of player quality expressed by Lawrence’s predecessors. At the end of the day, the cold hard truths must be confronted because the finite player resources available to Trinidad and Tobago national team selectors shall remain finite.

In Ecuador, the opponent’s technical staff will rely exclusively on a team drawn from the top division of professional football. The 21-man squad is comprised of players from eight of the twelve clubs in the Ecuadoran Serie A, but is primarily infused with players from four of the league’s traditional standard bearers. While the squad has an average age of 25.38 years, that statistic is skewed by Gustavo Quinteros’ selection of two non-goalkeeper players who are older than 30 years old (midfielders Pedro Quiñónez and Matías Oyola, both of whom are favored to start the match). Excluding the goalkeepers and these two players, the squad’s average age declines to 23.43 years.  Across playing lines, the average age of each Ecuadoran unit is goalkeepers (30.66 years), defenders (22.83 years), midfielders (25.55 years) and forwards (24.66 years). These figures comport consistently with Quinteros’ idea of exposing young players to the national team environment with the immediate view of integrating them into the four World Cup qualifying matches that remain on Ecuador’s schedule (versus Brazil, Peru, Chile and Argentina).

In comparison, the average age of Trinidad and Tobago’s playing contingent is 27.05 years. By team units, the statistics are goalkeepers (30.0 years), defenders (25.83 years), midfielders (26.77 years) and forwards (28.33 years). While the corps of Ecuador’s defenders is younger, there are not necessarily more inexperienced or lesser experienced than their older Trinidad and Tobago counterparts, due to multiple exposures to continental competitions such as the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, more intensive exposure to organized football and a greater number of raw minutes of football played across the football calendar. Similarly, the blend of maturity, experience and expansive play in Ecuador’s midfield will stand as a contrast to the undefined understanding in the proposed Trinidad and Tobago midfield. Up front, there is an undeniable gulf in international experience among the players presented by both nations, but this can be mitigated by a tactical posture by Trinidad and Tobago that presents a supportive, dynamic and adventurous midfield. The challenge and result of the match will be determined by whether there exists a meaningful gulf in class between both domestic XIs. Statistics do not necessarily influence what occurs on the field of play, but they go some measure to explain what is on display.

When not forced by circumstance, the idea of using a contingent of entirely home-based or primarily home-based players in an international friendly is not a new one. Although rarely found palatable to fans, or in the echelons of football’s elite national teams, the concept holds value when opponents who would benefit the stage of development of the players selected can be sourced, or when a country’s “A” national team is comprised of only home-based players. The teams deployed by Ecuador and Honduras in February attempted to follow the logic of the first reason. Notably, Ecuador’s only foreign inclusion was that of the then Italy-based Bryan Cabezas, who on the strength of his performance at the South American U-20 Championship was invited into the squad. How the Hondurans fared on the day is on record. Tonight, the Soca Warriors’ will have their turn. It will be intriguing to see whether Trinidad and Tobago’s domestic-based players adapt to Ecuadoran counterparts who are confidently on the cusp of integration into their national team alongside a cohort of foreign-based internationals.

From an Ecuadoran viewpoint, the friendly has been identified as being of utmost importance for several reasons.  Some of Ecuador’s seasoned internationals are inactive with their clubs and their uncertain club futures and lack of playing rhythm have created sources of concern and disquiet among the members of the national team’s technical staff. Players in this category include Walter Ayoví (Guayaquil FC), Alexander Dominguez (Monterrey, MEX), Arturo Mina (River Plate, ARG) and Luis Caicedo (Cruzeiro, on loan within the Ecuadoran Serie A). Other players lack viability to contribute on subsequent matchdays due to card accumulation (Jefferson Orejuela, Fluminense and Luis Caicedo, both of whom are unavailable versus Brazil) or the threat of card accumulation (the goalkeeper Esteban Dreer, Antonio Valencia, Jefferson Montero among several others) or due to injury. Therefore, Ecuador’s use of domestic players is to identify players who can mitigate these concerns, while also introducing new players to the technical staff’s tactical scheme. As such, the training squad is comprised of several young and not-so-young players who performed well during the Primera Etapa of the Ecuadoran championship.

Twelve teams participate at the highest rung of domestic football in Ecuador. The league runs from January to December and is disputed across 46 match dates divided into three phases of competition. The first and second phases (known as the Primera Etapa and the Segunda Etapa) feature round-robin competition that comprises 22 matchdays each. In the third phase of competition, the Tercera Etapa, the winners of the first and second phases battle each other at home and away to determine the league champion across the entire playing year. The bottom two Serie A teams are relegated. Demotion occurs based on a tally of the least points accumulated over the first and second phases.

Based on an assessment of reports emerging from the observation of the Ecuador national team practice session on Sunday, the following two variations represent how Ecuador is anticipated to be oriented for the encounter versus Trinidad and Tobago.

In Guayaquil, tickets for the match are at absolutely basement prices, but it is unclear whether this has sufficiently incentivized Ecuadoran fans, disillusioned about the quality of opposition, to show up. Time will tell. And, maybe the stats too.

The only thing nice about it is that the scores are level. They are cutting through our defense quite easily. If it weren't for some last ditch tackling and some luck, we could have conceded at least two more. One thing ah would say is dat dey trying to play de ball on de ground.

He may or may not have gotten piece of the ball, but anytime yuh coming through de back of a player like dat, de likelihood of being called for a foul is very high.

Yes, 2nd half is we problem. We just lose all shape. I wish we could play them a return game in Trini. We need matches like these.

Nah GOP, dat eh mandatory, what mandatory is our core group training and playing practice matches regularly.  Local-dominant team playing matches useful too, but after the former is satisfied...

Since you put it that way, then yes. But a strong opponent is always good preparation.

Local or full quad is irrelevant at this moment. Just get tough games on a regular basis, especially in the FIFA window. We should have set up game with Ven. at home. And play them at their home when things settle down there.
