Soca Warriors qualify automatically for 2019 Gold Cup as CONCACAF unveils new format.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

The Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team has qualified for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup) without kicking a ball owing to the Confederation’s new Nations League format, which was unveiled today.

All six nations from the 2018 World Cup Qualifying Hex series were granted automatic berths for the next Gold Cup alongside a further 10 teams from a one-off Nations League qualifying phase, which runs from September 2018 to March 2019.

The Soca Warriors failed to qualify for the 2017 Gold Cup but made it to the Hex under former head coach Stephen Hart. And that feat means Trinidad and Tobago will start competitive life in the new CONCACAF at the next Gold Cup in mid-2019 and as a “League A” football outfit in the inaugural Nations League, which starts in September 2019.

The other five automatic 2019 Gold Cup qualifiers are Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras and the United States.

CONCACAF’s remaining 34 nations, which include Jamaica, Canada, Haiti, Curaçao, El Salvador and Guyana, will compete in a qualifying series from September 2018 that determines the other Gold Cup participants as well as the members of three tiers of the Nations League.

League A comprises 12 teams while there will be 16 and 12 outfits in League B and C respectively—at present, Guatemala is serving an international suspension from FIFA.

Once the members of League A are decided, all 12 nations—Trinidad and Tobago included—will be divided into four groups of three teams each. The four group winners will advance to the semifinal round to contest the Nations League trophy while the table-proppers will be relegated to League B.

League B comprises four groups with four teams each with the group winners earning automatic promotion to CONCACAF’s top tier while the losers are demoted to League C.

The rationale behind the Nations League is the desire to ensure more meaningful games for the Confederation’s teams as well as to offer increased playing time for minnows who are often eliminated early from the various CONCACAF competitions. However, it also makes Caribbean Cup tournaments redundant and it is uncertain whether the CFU will try to stage its own regional competition for bragging rights between April and August.

The format unveiled today is a slight departure from CONCACAF’s preliminary proposal of eight teams in the top tier with 12 and 15 in the second and the third tiers respectively.

Wired868 understands that CONCACAF initially planned to share its three guaranteed World Cup spots between the League A’s four group winners while the half spot would either go to the League B champions or be contested between them and League A’s fourth-placed team.

However, the Confederation has not confirmed what format will be used to determine its qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup and could even revert to the former scenario, including the Hex. The Qatar tournament will be the last World Cup involving 32 teams as FIFA voted to expand the 2026 competition to 48 nations.

Trinidad and Tobago’s last competitive match was on 10 October, 2017 when the Warriors stunned USA 2-1 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. And, when they do return to the playing field at the 2019 Gold Cup, coach Dennis Lawrence’s men will have gone 20 months without a competition match.

Since last October, the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) arranged two home matches against Grenada and Guyana—both were drawn—while the Warriors are in action again this month when they play away to Guadeloupe and Martinique.

T&T seeded in League A of newly launched Concacaf Nations League
TTFA Media

By virtue of having qualified for the Hexagonal Round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Russia 2018, Trinidad and Tobago along with Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and the United States  have earned the right to be seeded directly into League A, and therefore will not participate in Nations League Qualifying.

This was disclosed at CONCACAF today  announced the details and structure of the Concacaf Nations League, a new centralized men’s national team competition representing a new era of national team football for Concacaf Member Associations.

The Concacaf Nations League begins in September with a one-off qualifying phase, while the group phase, consisting of three tiered leagues will kick off in 2019. The top league will end with a Final to crown the Nations League champion, and the competition will also serve to unify the qualifying path for the region’s national teams to the newly expanded Gold Cup.

The inaugural Concacaf Nations League competition will be played in the official FIFA match windows in September, October and November, 2019 with a Final Championship to be played in March 2020. All eligible Concacaf Member Associations will be assigned by sporting performance into three leagues: A, B and C.

League A of which T&T has been placed in, will contain four groups of three teams. The winners of each League A group will qualify to the Concacaf Nations League Final Championship, which will determine the champion of the new competition. The teams at the bottom of each League A group will be relegated to League B for the next edition of the tournament.

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Dennis Lawrence, in an immediate reaction, spoke about this development.

“It’s a massive tournament and a very important one of that for the region and it is one I am sure everyone is very excited about. As for us a country, it’s good that we are into League A as one of the teams which made it to the Hex. It puts us into a position where there’s a bit more time for planning and preparation to ensure we are adequately ready for our first point of action in the competition and one which I am sure we will be eagerly awaiting and prepared to enter,” Lawrence told TTFA Media. “It’s a great step for us and we’ll definitely be focusing on making it all the way through and participating in the next Gold Cup especially as we missed out on the last competition,” he added.

TTFA President Daviid John-Williams and General Secretary Justin Latapy-George both attended Wednesday’s launch and draw in Miami.

Concacaf President Victor Montagliani spoke about the competition creating greater opportunities for member associations.

“The launch of the Concacaf Nations League, conceived over the last two years and guided by the ONE Concacaf principles of unity and access for our region’s football, is the defining moment marking the completion of our transition into a new era for our 41-member Concacaf family,” said Montagliani. “The Nations League assures that all our members will have the opportunity to play more and compete more, which in turn will propel greater development of the sport at every level.”

Each league will be sub-divided into groups, in which the participating Member Associations will compete in a home-and-away, round-robin format over the course of the group phase. Nations League scheduling will be centralized in a fan-friendly, evenly distributed “week of football” format, allowing viewers across the region to enjoy quality international football matches at a variety of kickoff times, each day for the entire match window.

League B will contain four groups of four teams. The winner of each League B group will be promoted to League A, and the bottom team of each League B group will be relegated to League C for the next edition. League C will consist of the remaining MAs divided into four groups. The winner of each League C group will be promoted to League B.

The first edition of the Concacaf Nations League will begin with a one-off Concacaf Nations League Qualifying phase, which will determine which teams are assigned to each league. By virtue of having qualified for the Hexagonal Round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Russia 2018, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, the United States and Trinidad & Tobago have earned the right to be seeded directly into League A, and therefore will not participate in Nations League Qualifying.  In view of the on-going suspension imposed by FIFA, Guatemala will not be able to participate in CONCACAF Nations League Qualifying.

The draw for Nations League Qualifying, which was also held Wednesday in Miami, has sorted the 34 Participating Member Associations into 68 total fixtures, to be played on FIFA match dates from September 2018 through March 2019.  For the up-to-date draw results, please visit www.Concacaf.com.

The results of Nations League Qualifying will be compiled into an aggregate table, ranking the participating teams 1-34 based on points earned, goal difference and a series of additional tie breakers. The table will be used to divide teams into Leagues A, B and C for the first full edition of the Concacaf Nations League. The top six teams from the aggregate table will join the six World Cup Qualifying Hexagonal Round participants in League A, the next 16 teams will qualify for League B, and the remaining teams will be assigned to League C.

The top ten finishers in the Nations League Qualifying final table will also join the six World Cup Hexagonal Round nations in the 2019 Gold Cup, ]which has recently been expanded to 16 teams (https://mailchi.mp/0f17c3bdd5cd/concacaf-announces-gold-cup-expansion-to-16-teams-delivering-on-one-concacaf-vision-to-create-access-for-more-nations-to-participate-and-host?e=[UNIQID), providing additional access to top-level football for more of Concacaf’s Member Associations.

The Concacaf Nations League is an on-the-field extension of Concacaf’s new image and brand architecture, which was also launched Wednesday, framing the Confederation’s efforts around the core ONE Concacaf vision of developing and stewarding the game on the pillars of Unity, Access, Football and Quality. In that spirit, the Nations League will provide greatly expanded access for Concacaf’s Member Associations to international football, enhancing the development of football across the region at all levels.

“The new brand image cements our unified philosophy of ONE Concacaf, and the Nations League brings that philosophy to life on the field of play, promising a brighter future in football for all our Member Associations and the players and fans they represent.”

Gold Cup 2019 coming to the Caribbean.
By Stephon Nicholas (Newsday).

THE CONCACAF Gold Cup is coming to the Caribbean for the very first time in 2019. The announcement was made by CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani who expressed pride in the hosting of an expanded competition. The tournament, which T&T have already qualified for, will see matches held in the US, Central America and Caribbean. The first-ever 16-team Gold Cup has been hailed as a historic moment for the region by Montagliani who is pleased to bring the Gold Cup to all corners of CONCACAF.

“The venues selected thus far offer a mix of soccer history as well as a taste of the future of the sport in the U.S., and we are excited to work with the local host committees to bring the game to fans all over the U.S. With the upcoming selection of additional venues in the Caribbean and Central America, the Gold Cup becomes a regional event on even more levels, as CONCACAF continues to focus on making football accessible to more teams, players and fans,” he said.

The news was greeted with cautious optimism yesterday by TT Football Association (TTFA) President David-John Williams who is still recovering from a fall recently. When told of the new development, John-Williams declared, “It is an interesting prospect.”

Wayne Cunningham, Media Officer of TTFA, was also unaware of the changes in the structure of the Gold Cup but was extremely excited to hear matches will be held in the Caribbean.

“It will be a welcome thing for the region. The regional will finally get a taste of big football,” he said.

Cunningham, formerly head of the Eastern Football Association (EFA), said he has been to three Gold Cups in the past and was impressed with the organisation of the tournament.

With T&T and Jamaica viewed as the leading football countries in the Caribbean, Cunningham is keen to see which Caribbean nations are selected to host matches.

He said Caribbean fans will get to see their top players live competing at the highest level.

“It will be good for teams because for the Gold Cup you get your international players released from their clubs and they will get the chance to play in front their home crowd. You only get that for World Cup qualifiers (every four years) and on a FIFA international window but we still get trouble to get our best teams on those days,” he said.

Six teams have already qualified for the Gold Cup by virtue of reaching the hexagonal stage of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers – T&T, USA, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras. The other 10 will qualify through the new CONCACAF Nations League.

Concacaf Announces Costa Rica as Host Country for the 2019 Gold Cup
Concacaf

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) today announced that the Estadio Nacional, in San Jose, Costa Rica will host a Concacaf Gold Cup doubleheader, featuring the home nation, on Sunday, June 16, 2019. This will be the first time in the tournament’s 15 editions that matches are played in Central America. The two matches will kick-off the action for Group B.

Next summer’s expanded Gold Cup, set to kick off on Saturday, June 15, will be the largest Gold Cup in history. Alongside the group stage doubleheader in Costa Rica, 15 U.S. metropolitan areas and one yet-to-be-announced Caribbean venue will welcome the 2019 edition of the tournament.

“We are very proud to bring the Concacaf Gold Cup to Costa Rica, where fans have shown great excitement, passion and love for our game,” said Concacaf President Victor Montagliani. “By hosting our premier competition in Central America, we are achieving a core principle of our ONE Concacaf Vision, which is to increase access to the game, develop football and ensuring our fans experience the highest quality of football in the region.”

“It’s an honor for the Costa Rican Football Federation to have the confidence and support of Concacaf to host a Gold Cup group stage doubleheader in Costa Rica,” said Concacaf Council Vice President and Fedefutbol President Rodolfo Villalobos. “This announcement is part of our efforts to transform the Federation into a highly professional entity and a benchmark at the regional level. It is part of the constant and planned efforts to grow our football. We also celebrate the opportunity Costa Ricans will have to enjoy the Gold Cup at home for the first time in its history.”

The Estadio Nacional, known as "The Jewel" of La Sabana, for its allusive and modern architecture, was inaugurated on March 26, 2011. The stadium has hosted many international events, including the 2014 FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup, matches of the national team of Costa Rica and athletic events.

The venues and dates for the 2019 Gold Cup seeded nations are available here. The complete group and schedule will be announced next year, once all nations have qualified for the Gold Cup via the Concacaf Nations League Qualifier, with the final round taking place March of 2019. To date, six of the 16 national teams scheduled to participate have qualified for next year’s tournament, those being the countries that participated in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Hexagonal qualifier round: Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States.

Tickets to the Gold Cup doubleheader in Costa Rica will go on sale on Friday, December 7 via www.specialticket.net and its service points throughout Costa Rica.

Tickets for all other Gold Cup matches in the U.S. are available by visiting www.GoldCup.org or calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000. Fans can also contact their specific venue or visit venue websites for box office hours and information.

The 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup is sponsored by Allstate Insurance Company, Cerveza Modelo, Nike, Scotiabank, and Toyota. The tournament will be broadcast nationally on the Univision and FOX family of networks and transmitted on radio in Spanish by Fútbol de Primera Radio Network, and broadcast by television partners in countries around the world.

United States names Berhalter as Head Coach
Concacaf

On Sunday, the United States Soccer Federation announced the hiring of Gregg Berhalter as its new Head Coach.

Berhalter takes over for interim coach Dave Sarachan after spending the previous five years at the helm of the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer.

“We are excited to announce Gregg as the next head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team,” said USSF President Carlos Cordeiro in a statement.

“As an experienced former National Team player and highly regarded professional coach, we are confident he is the best person to guide our program forward. We are looking forward to formally introducing him on Tuesday in New York,” added Cordeiro.

Berhalter’s first major tournament in charge of the U.S. will be the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup in which the U.S. will seek to repeat as champions after lifting the trophy in the 2017 edition.

The United States will participate in Group D and play its three group stages matches in Saint Paul, Minnesota on June 18, Cleveland, Ohio on June 22 and finishing in Kansas City, Kansas on June 26.

The U.S. is a six-time champion of the Gold Cup, second all-time to Mexico’s seven titles.

As a player, Berhalter earned 44 caps and was a member of the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup teams for the U.S.

"This is a tremendous honor,” Berhalter said in a statement. “Having played for the National Team I know what it means to represent our country.  I believe in our players and our program, and together we will work to build something special and develop a team that will make our supporters proud.”

U.S. Soccer Hires Gregg Berhalter as Coach of National Team
By Andrew Das, The New York Times

The worst-kept secret in American soccer is now official: Gregg Berhalter will be the next coach of the United States men’s national team.

Berhalter, who will leave the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer after five seasons, was the handpicked choice of the national team’s new general manager, Earnie Stewart. But his hiring did not become a done deal until U.S. Soccer’s board of directors approved his contract in a conference call. That call took place Saturday, according to a person familiar with the decision.

The 45-year-old Berhalter, a former defender who represented the United States on two World Cup teams, is expected to be introduced as the national team coach on Tuesday in New York.

His hiring, rumored for months and reported as agreed upon as early as Nov. 23, ends a remarkably slow-moving search that began with the team’s World Cup qualifying humiliation in Couva, Trinidad, nearly 14 months ago. In the interregnum, U.S. Soccer endured a bitter campaign to elect a new president, won the rights to co-host the 2026 World Cup and watched the 2018 tournament in Russia from afar.

It has also seen the men’s team drift through a dozen games under a caretaker coach, Dave Sarachan, while Stewart — hired as general manager in June and on the job only since Aug. 1 — began the long-delayed search for Bruce Arena’s permanent replacement.

Stewart made few comments on the coaches he was speaking with — his initial working list included almost three dozen names, including some who were suggested to him and others who sought him out to offer their services — and in his rare comments to reporters set a curiously high bar for what he considered a formal interview for the position. But after narrowing the official list twice, Stewart cast his lot with Berhalter, a former teammate.

Berhalter’s contract is expected to carry him through a four-year World Cup cycle that he, his new players and — most important — the federation hope will end in a redemptive appearance by the United States at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

While the end of the team’s leadership vacuum will come as a relief for U.S. Soccer, the plodding pace of the search — a persistent frustration for fans over the past year — was not its finest hour. In recent weeks, the frustration about the team even began to bubble up from inside the locker room. Christian Pulisic, the team’s brightest star, strongly hinted after a game in London last month that the team needed some direction after more than a year under Sarachan, a longtime Arena assistant but never a serious candidate for the permanent post.

“We definitely want a permanent head coach,” Pulisic said, “someone who has a plan and someone who has a great idea of how we want to play moving forward.”

Berhalter, whose Columbus team was eliminated from the M.L.S. playoffs weeks ago, should hit the ground running. He has kept journals about tactics, but also his personal successes and failures, since his playing days in the Dutch league, and his Columbus teams — short on star power but long on preparation and organization — earned a reputation for punching above their weight in M.L.S.

The decision to give him the national team job will do little to appease critics of U.S. Soccer’s insider culture (Berhalter’s older brother Jay is U.S. Soccer’s chief commercial officer) or its outreach efforts to the country’s large Hispanic soccer community, which has often felt its contributions — and its players — have been marginalized by the federation.

But Berhalter’s credentials appealed to the one person who mattered most: Stewart. Berhalter represented clubs in the Netherlands, England and Germany during a long playing career, and made more than 40 appearances for the United States senior team — including two starts in the knockout stage of the 2002 World Cup. He earned his coaching licenses while playing in Europe and cut his teeth in an 18-month stint leading Hammarby in Sweden. Fired for fielding teams that were deemed “too defensive,” he returned to M.L.S. — where he had won a league title as a player, under Arena in Los Angeles — to lead Columbus to the playoffs in four of his five seasons in charge.

Berhalter’s first look at the United States team will come in its annual January training camp, which most likely will take place without most of the squad’s European pros. (The January dates are not on the official FIFA calendar, meaning clubs are not required to release their players for them.) That camp will be more than 16 months after the team’s stunning loss to Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup qualifying shook U.S. Soccer to its core.

The 2022 World Cup qualifying cycle is expected to begin next fall. By then, U.S. Soccer hopes, Berhalter and his players will be positioned at last to try to return the country to soccer’s biggest stage.

U.S. Soccer boss Carlos Cordeiro: No decision on Gold Cup after 2021.
ESPN

United States Soccer Federation president Carlos Cordeiro said that no decision has been made on if the Gold Cup will continue after 2021.

"The Gold Cup is only legislated for this year and 2021, so it could go on but it may not happen," he said, according to The Athletic.

The tournament that pits CONCACAF nations -- composed of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean -- against each other every two years. The United States is primarily hosting the 2019 edition this summer in 15 venues across the country, with two group-stage matches being played in Costa Rica. The U.S. has served as host or co-host for the tournament since the current format was implemented in 1991.

Cordeiro said there have been discussion about the North American countries joining their South American counterparts in a tournament.

"There have been talks in the last year between CONMEBOL and CONCACAF on a kind of combined Copa America," he said, "but they haven't been able to come to an agreement on that."

In 2016, CONMEBOL -- South America's 10-nation federation -- invited four North American teams (the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica) in one-time version to celebrate the Copa America's centennial anniversary. The U.S. played host, with Chile beating Argentina in the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

The 2019 Copa America -- hosted by Brazil and with invited guests Qatar and Japan -- will largely coincide with the Gold Cup.

Cordeiro also said the FIFA Confederations Cup is "done and over with." That tournament takes place one year before each World Cup as a test-run of sorts for the host nation, with the contentinental champions and defending World Cup holder participating.

"In place of Confederations Cup there will be intracontinental playoffs to get to that 48-team [World Cup]," Cordeiro said.

FIFA is yet to decide whether the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will expand to 48 teams. But Cordeiro thinks the Arab country will be hard-pressed to host that many sides.

"Qatar has accepted that they don't have the facilities," Cordeiro said. "They have eight stadiums, but that's not enough to run a 48-team tournament."

T&T to face USA, Panama, Guyana in Group D of Gold Cup 2019.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago will open its 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup account against Panama in the first game of a double header on June 18th at Allianz Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  T&T will face off with hosts and defending champions United States, Guyana and Panama, it was disclosed at the Gold Cup draw announcement ceremony at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Head coach Dennis Lawrence attended along with team manager Richard Piper and media officer Shaun Fuentes with the latter two attending team workshops for managers and media on Thursday at the West Drift Manhattan Beach hotel along with delegates of the other fifteen competing teams and Concacaf officials.

T&T faces United States as action shifts to FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland for their second round of matches on June 22 . Group play will then close with Group D’s final matchday at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City on June 26  with T&T meeting Guyana and Panama facing the US.

The knockout rounds will begin on June 29 at Houston’s NRG stadium with two quarterfinal matches, while the other two quarterfinals will be played June 30 in Philadelphia.

The semifinals are set to be held July 2 in Glendale, Arizona and July 3 in Nashville, with the final set to take place July 7 in Chicago.

Group A , which features Mexico, Canada, Martinique and Cuba will open play on June 15 at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. The group’s second matchday will come on June 19 at Broncos Stadium at Mile High in Denver, with the final round of matches played June 23 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Group B , featuring Costa Rica, Haiti, Nicaragua and Bermuda , will play its opening matches on June 16 at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose, with the second round of matches to be played at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas on June 20 . The final round of matches will take place at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on June 24 .

Group C matches will begin on June 17 , with Honduras, Jamaica, El Salvador and Curacao all taking the field in Kingston, Jamaica at Independence Park. The group will move to BBVA Compass Stadium Houston for the second round of matches on June 24 while Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles will host the third round of matches on June 25 .

Lawrence in an immediate reaction at the Banc of California stadium told TTFA Media “It’s all exciting because we’ve been waiting to find out who was going to be our opposition in the Gold Cup. We know it wasn’t going to be easy because they are all very good teams that have qualified for the Gold Cup.  It’s an interesting one.”

“I knew it was going to happen because it is what was meant to be,” he said of the USA fixture. “As I said before, when you go into any major tournament I think if you want to win the tournament you have to probably beat some of the better teams and USA are one of the best, so we are looking forward to it. They’ll be excited about it and it’s going to be a full house when we play the US because they will have the fans behind them and hopefully a few Trinidadian fans will turn out.

As to what his squad of players can anticipate at Concacaf’s Premier event, Lawrence said, ”They are going to look forward to an exciting tournament. It’s the biggest in the Concacaf region. It’s like our World Cup and the players should be excited about it and excited about turning up in a tournament, representing Trinidad and Tobago and doing well. I think they need to just embrace the moment when it comes and go out and just try and do their best.

Regarding his preparations schedule between now and the opening game on June 18th against Panama, Lawrence added, “The idea is to try and have some training with the local group because obviously that remains a major concern for us in the absence of the league. We need to try and prepare some of the local players to get them ready and  give them a chance to try and make the Gold Cup squad. That is prominent on my mind at the moment and is a bit of a concern so we are working on that. Then going into the Japan and the Venezuela games if you look at the date of our first game I think the Japan game is coming at a good time.. it gives us enough time to recover after the (Japan) game.”

Concacaf President Victor Montagliani said at the start of proceedings, “The love for football is demonstrated with every passing edition of the Concacaf Gold Cup,” said “Bringing the 16-team Gold Cup to Costa Rica, Jamaica and the United States is a watershed moment for football in our Confederation. This 15th edition will make the tournament more competitive and compelling for players and fans, while showcasing our region’s unity, passion for football and talent on the field.”

The 2019 Gold Cup will be the biggest-ever edition of the event, with more participating nations (16 up from 12 in 2017), more host countries (three, including first-time matches in Costa Rica and Jamaica, and more stadiums (17 up from 14 in 2017, eight of which are in contention to become a 2026 FIFA World Cup venue).

The 15th edition of the continental championship will kick off on Saturday, June 15 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, with Canada and Martinique marking the start of Group A action. The second match of the day will feature a matchup between seven-time Gold Cup champions Mexico and Cuba.

Strange that 3 of the 6 automatic qualifiers ended up in the same group.  I thought they would have been seeded.
My thoughts exactly, toughest group. DL please start selecting the best players available!

Can the Soca Warriors pull through the first rounds of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup)?

1. T&T vs Panama Game (18-Jun-2016) - Allianz Field in St. Paul Minnesota

2. T&T vs USA Game (22-June-2019) - FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland

3. T&T vs Guyana Game (26-June-2019) - Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City

Post your predictions and before you do, T&T might be without; Joevin Jones (have been ducking T&T), Greg Ramjitsingh (possible blacklisted?) and Kevin Molion (match fee issue and fitness?)

This post will be merged after the tournament.

Defence seems solid atm. We need to sort out formidable attack personnel and formula to stand any chance of progressing from the group. I'll make a more educated guess after the Japan & Venezuela games about our chances.

2019 tournament seems destined for US-Mexico final.
By Greg Seltzer (mlssoccer.COM).

Gold Cup predictions:

The NCAA Tournament may be done and dusted, but that doesn't mean all your potential fun with filling out brackets has gone away.

Wednesday's Concacaf Gold Cup draw has set up a whole new prediction puzzle for soccer fans, and of course we're apt to join in the brain-racking prediction game.

We'll start by picking the two teams to advance from each of the four groups, and then start working through the knockouts to make a call on the 2019 champion.

The 2019 version of this continental tournament features an expanded field of 16 teams. The top two teams from each group of four will make the quarterfinal round, then single elimination sets in before the final July 7 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Group A

Predicted order of finish: Mexico, Canada, Martinique, Cuba

El Tri are the star side here, but plenty of eyes will be on an up-and-coming Canada team. The Maple Leaf boys can make it back-to-back trips to the quarters provided they handle business against an oft-pesky Martinique side.

Group B

Predicted order of finish: Costa Rica, Haiti, Nicaragua, Bermuda

The Ticos should sail into the knockouts, leaving a dogfight for the second quarterfinal berth. Though they're a team in transition, Haiti will be expected to grab it.

Group C

Predicted order of finish: Jamaica, Honduras, El Salvador, Curacao

The Reggae Boyz seemingly hold the key to finishing first, as they open at home against the group’s toughest foe, Honduras. Both would do well to not sleep on a suddenly-warming El Salvador side (like Jamaica did last month).

Group D

Predicted order of finish: United States, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana

Wouldn't ya know it? The US national team draws the toughest overall group assignment, including a revenge shot at Trinidad and Tobago. The Soca Warriors could well be desperate in that match after opening with an experienced Panama outfit that has steeled itself against high-level foes for the last year.

Quarterfinals

Canada over Costa Rica
Mexico over Haiti
Jamaica over Panama
USMNT over Honduras

The US shouldn't get too much resistance from a rebuilding Honduras group, and Mexico will have even less from Haiti. We'll give Jamaica the edge over Panama due to their strength in goal and at the back. That leaves our tournament upset special, which sees Canada win a thrilling run-and-gun affair with Costa Rica.

Semifinals

Mexico over Canada
USMNT over Jamaica

Jamaica's lack of midfield might catches up to them against the Nats, who will own central park to reach the final for the seventh time in the last eight tries. Meanwhile, Canada's fun run will come to an end against a Mexico side they haven't solved in nearly 20 years.

Finals

Mexico over USMNT

It's worth noting that only two US managers (Bob Bradley and Bora Milutinovic) have captured the Gold Cup crown inside their first year at the helm, so it's definitely not the easiest first competitive mission for Gregg Berhalter.

Expect yet another epic throwdown between the two top dogs in the region, and one that probably goes down to the wire. It may not be a popular opinion around these parts, but I can't help but feel this tight contest will be decided by the biggest positional mismatch on the field.

That means it comes down to either Hirving Lozano or Carlos Vela (or more likely both, in turns) against whomever takes up the US left back spot, which means El Tri reclaim the crown. Don't fret, though. Sometimes, tough defeats are also part of the process.

Sorry to say this, but if that's all the forwards we have, I cant see any of them scoring a goal against the US. If Molino is converted into a striker, we might  have a fighting chance.

Bostock, Deleon and Telfer needs to be on the squad. They can easily take a spot from our current crop.

Also quit hating on Ranjitsingh and give him a call up. Do it before Guyana does. As far as I know, he can get a GUY passport and present a case to Fifa, and argue that he has never played in a game for TT.. He has only suited up to sit on the bench.. which might make him still eligible for GUY, under Fifa special considerations regarding changing allegiances. To strengthen his case, he hasnt had a call up in over 2 years. . So he might still be able to represent GUY through his mother.

We missing KJ a lot. None of them forwards can come close to replacing him. I cant see any of them forwards being threat to any team in the Gold cup.

Predictions for group d:

Panama 1 - 1 TT
USA 5 - 0 GUY

Panama 2 - 0 GUY
USA 2 - 0 TT

TT 2 - 0 GUY
USA 2 - 0 Panama

As per Fifa rules, coin toss between TT and Panama.. Tails for TT, Heads for Panama.. Panama advances by way of coin toss. 2021 is two years away...

If USA done win the group, I guarantee that they go lie down to Panama in the final group match and give Panama a tie or win just to spite us for missing 2018. In other words, if we win the first group match, we will go through to the knockout.

Hopeful predictions:

TT 1 - 0 Panama
USA 5 - 0 GUY

Panama 2 - 0 GUY
US 2 - 0 TT

TT 2 - 0 GUY
USA 1 - 1 Panama

Group A

Predicted order of finish: Mexico, Martinique, Canada, Cuba

Would be surprised if Canada performs and I don't think they're significantly stronger than Martinique or Cuba when the whistle is blown.

Group B

Predicted order of finish: Costa Rica, Haiti, Bermuda, Nicaragua

I actually think Nicaragua are that weak - it's a toss-up between the bottom three as Haiti are hit-and-miss but stronger than the others.

Group C

Predicted order of finish: Honduras,Jamaica, El Salvador, Curacao

Honduras are the strongest for me, Jamaica and El Salvador are very similar imo, but Curacao are definitely a dark horse people may overlook.

Group D

Predicted order of finish: United States, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, Guyana

USA have looked significantly stronger over the past 12 months, but they're always capable of dropping a bollock. Panama and Trinidad are similar, so I'm going to be biased and put us through.

Quarterfinals

Costa Rica bt Martinique
Mexico bt Haiti
Honduras bt T&T
USA bt Jamaica

First two won't be close, and Honduras should see T&T off sadly, but USA and Jamaica is a coin-toss for me, depending on which USA team turns up.

Semifinals

Mexico bt Costa Rica
Honduras bt USA

Controversial, but I think Honduras might beat USA

Finals

Mexico over ANYONE (in this case, Honduras)

Mexico are strong, it's their competition to lose.

United States to play Gold Cup tune-up vs. Jamaica in Washington D.C.
By Jeff CarlisleU.S. soccer correspondent

The United States will face Jamaica at Washington D.C.'s Audi Field on June 5, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced on Thursday.

The match will serve as the first of two Gold Cup tune-ups, with the U.S. scheduled to face Venezuela in Cincinnati four days later.

The Reggae Boyz reached each of the past two Gold Cup finals. Jamaica fell to Mexico 3-1 in 2015 -- after ousting the Americans in the semifinals -- and lost to the U.S. 2-1 two years later.

The match will also mark the third time the two teams have squared off in the nation's capital. They played to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup qualifier back in 1997, as well as a 2-0 U.S. victory in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Gold Cup.

"As we prepare for the start of the Gold Cup, this is the perfect opportunity in terms of opponent and venue," U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter said. "Playing against Jamaica, we get exposure to another different style of play and one that we may see later in the tournament.

"For us, there's always something special about playing in the nation's capital. There have been so many memorable games for the national team in Washington, D.C., and now we look forward to beginning another chapter in the new stadium."

The U.S. will begin play in the Gold Cup with a match against Guyana on Tuesday, June 18 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Following that match, the U.S. moves east to face Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, June 22 in Cleveland before closing group play against Panama on Wednesday, June 26 in Kansas City, Kansas.

Jamaica has been drawn into Group C alongside Honduras, El Salvador and Curaçao. The Reggae Boyz will host Honduras in Kingston on June 17, followed by matches against El Salvador in Houston four days later, as well as the group finale against Curaçao on June 25 in Los Angeles.

The final is scheduled for Chicago's Soldier Field on July 7.

He had missed matches due to an eye infection, but there is no indication that particular issue has persisted or would exclude him from playing in June. Incidentally, only one player from RW's club has been included in the Honduras provisional squad and that player is a goalkeeper who may not make the final 23.Although Rundell has had noteworthy success in Honduras, were he Honduran he would not be a straightforward inclusion at their NT level, but he would certainly be among a broad list of considerations especially if they were selecting domestically based players only, but at F Honduras has an array of players involved in superior environments.

I think the stage is set for Marcus Joseph to make a weighty contribution because he is a player that is not necessarily or exclusively dependent on service.

In 2015, we had 5 foreign-based players of 10 forwards/forward-compatible players named in our provisional squad. For this provisional squad, we have 3 foreign-based players out of 5 Fs named but they are other forward-compatible players who are not listed strictly among the forwards. Nonetheless, I think you raise a sound observation based on everything we have seen since March 2017.

In 2015, SH selected both Winchesters, Kenwyne, Glenn, Caesar, Devon Jorsling, Guerra, Peltier, Plaza and Kadeem Corbin to the provisional squad.

At that time, Rundell Winchester was foreign-based and so too were Glenn, Caesar, Peltier and Kenwyne. Shahdon, Plaza, Corbin, Guerra and Jorsling were local-based.

Of the Fs, only Shahdon Winchester, Guerra, Peltier and Plaza are returnees from the 2015 provisional squad. Of these 4, the last three were in the eventual final 23 in 2015.

There is no question that the 2019 configuration of the F line is porous in some way, but I think you don't need a microscope to identify how the sacrificial lambs were sacrificed.

There was a time when we would have presumed that players operating in Central America in a top flight and producing goals there would have been well-placed for NT selection.

Good to see Greg on the list, good job tallest. I don't see how the local players can make the final roster when they have not been playing all year. Not their fault but I believe the players who have been training, competing and performing consistently should be selected. Players should be match fit and sharp for the tournament.

Ten players who need to perform well in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup
By  Greg Seltzer

It's nearly Gold Cup time again, and that means there are players all over Concacaf feeling pressure to come up big for their respective countries in June and early July.

Some are stars being counted on to produce with the chips down on the regional table. Some are formerly integral pieces looking to re-stamp authority, either in the international game or to regain club form, or both. Some are youngsters or Gold Cup newbies aiming to establish a place in their national team set-up.

Whatever the motivation or challenge, all of them have a chance to enhance their international standing and help their nations to a measure of glory in one fell swoop if they can just enjoy a monster Gold Cup.

F Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC)

There's no getting around it. The US men's national team attack is still trying to find itself in the final third during a time of squad transition. If Altidore can stay fit long enough, he can be a safe bridge between eras and stay in the roster frame. When the Toronto FC striker is on, good things happen for the USMNT (such as in the 2017 Gold Cup semis and final, for example). If he's not available or up to snuff (such as in the 2009, 2011 and 2015 Gold Cups), goals could be much harder to come by when this year's edition reaches the pointy end.

GK Andre Blake (Philadelphia Union)

If Jamaica harbor any hope of reaching their third straight Gold Cup final (or even the semis, for that matter), they will surely need the Philadelphia Union goalkeeper to stand on his head a fair few times. The Reggae Boyz' experienced back line is decent enough, but the attack has not scored against a 2019 tourney entrant in more than 300 minutes. Expect the margin for error to be as thin as the line Blake will defend. He's carried extra weight at this tournament before (he blanked Mexico twice in 2017), and will be widely expected to do it again.

F Tyler Boyd (Ankaragücü)

Sure, why not pile the pressure on the new guy just as he walks in the door? Well... why not? Boyd will want to prove to himself that his FIFA switch was a shrewd move and prove to US fans that he's a reliable answer on the flank for a team trying to figure things out in attack. Though young US wingers have grabbed a few helpers early in 2019, the squad has not gotten a goal from a wide threat in a year and the nearest one prior to that was Jordan Morris' 2017 Gold Cup clincher. The door is wide open for on-loan Ankaragucu survival hero to play instant USMNT ace and slow the revolving door out on the wing at once.

GK Maxime Crepeau (Vancouver Whitecaps FC)

For all intents and purposes, the Canada 'keeper job is currently an open position with several applicants. After several years as an MLS understudy, Crepeau has finally earned an MLS starting role and new employers Vancouver are reaping the dividends. When you exclude the seven penalty kicks (!!) he's picked from his net in 2019, the 25-year-old has conceded just eight goals in 12 league starts with a 82 percent save percentage. If Crepeau keeps that form up through camp and into June, he could begin making the CanMNT No. 1 jersey his own for years to come. Backstopping them to the semis for the first time since 2007 would be a fine start.

F Raul Jimenez (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

In his first big tournament as Mexico manager, it's fair to say that Tata Martino finds himself in a real pickle. He'll enter Gold Cup play with an attack that will, to put it extremely mildly, be missing some key weapons. For various reasons, there will be no Chicharito, no Carlos Vela, no Jesus Manuel Corona, no Diego Lainez and perhaps no Hirving Lozano, as well. If that wasn't enough, he'll also be short midfield engine Hector Herrera, aka the guy who gets the ball to the attackers in good positions.

Suffice to say, that El Tri will need to be economical in the final third. That's where Jimenez comes in. Fresh off a smashing debut Premier League campaign that saw him shine as the dominant offensive force for a Wolverhampton side that booked it's first European berth in 38 years. With Martino eager to succeed fast and Mexican fans pressing for their boys to reclaim the Gold Cup, the heat is on for Jimenez to make everyone forget the absent.

D Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls)

With presumptive left center back starter John Brooks on the mend and off the Gold Cup provisional roster, that starting role is temporarily there for the taking. And if Gregg Berhalter wishes to persist with his hybrid right back-midfielder wrinkle, it's a rather important role. Long (who has been solid or better in four of his five US caps to date) excels at defending in space, an integral part of covering the back when four defenders become three. As such, a big tourney showing from him would go a long way toward a title repeat.

M Kevin Molino (Minnesota United)

If this past weekend's win over Columbus is any indication, the Minnesota United attacker is just starting to regain his soccer juju after 13 months on the recovery shelf. Playing time has been slow to come for a Loons outfit on the right side of .500 early in the MLS season, but the Gold Cup should provide a great chance for Molino to continue rounding into form. His goal-shy Trinidad & Tobago side (302 scoreless minutes heading into a tune-up friendly against Japan) rely heavily on midfield playmakers for offense, so a string of starts would seem like a win-win-win proposition for the veteran and his two teams.

M Jonathan Osorio (Toronto FC)

After more than a decade out in the Concacaf wilderness, Canada are brimming with promise for the future. Most of that optimism centers around wing and strike stables suddenly stocked with exciting young players. What they are not currently blessed with is a prototype No. 10 to get them the ball. So who will that responsibility fall on? The Toronto FC man is more well known for late runner capitalism in front of goal than he is for primary assists. However, Osorio won't need to set the table himself if can keep the the likes of flank final ball artists Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies, Junior Hoilett and Bailou Tabla from starving for service.

F Romell Quioto (Houston Dynamo)

After piling up 13 goals and 15 helpers during his first two seasons in MLS, the Houston winger has started this term as cold as ice. He's lost his Dynamo starting job and his mojo, but Gold Cup should offer the chance to get at least one of them back. Of course, there's also the matter of a rather experienced Honduras side having won just one of their last eight Gold Cup matches. To win their group and (presumably) avoid the US in the quarters, they'll badly need Quioto to help them reverse that slide by helping club and country teammate Alberth Elis drive production.

D Miles Robinson (Atlanta United)

Obviously, there's no great urgency for the 22-year-old Atlanta United defender to barge into the US defense stable and he's probably a dark hose candidate to make the tournament squad. Even so, there's no denying Robinson as been among the best Atlanta performers this season in his first season as a regular. When it comes to seizing opportunities, they say there's no better time than the present. That's especially true when the team's back line top smooth criminal is out injured, overly mobile forwards are soon to be afoot and the boss' tactics seem likely to require the center backs blend defending on the run with safe ball movement out of trouble.

we don't create much, can't score if man not creating......we seem to be playing on d counter, but we low block cyah pass or take too long to make decision....we wide players does be static and only move when d ball move in dem direction....so we transitional play is like tryin to swim in laglee..... slow as all f*ck.....we have quick wingers yet we don't seem to properly use d width dem fellas can provide to make space for d other attackers.....I feel if we try to "stretch d pitch" and be more direct in transition with ah aggressive mid press, we will have more joy....we also need to get back ah striker dat can hold up and\or link d play....KJ greatest asset in his latter days was his underrated and largely unnoticed link up play, he had so many uncredited "assists" during those games under Hart

in reality we would be better off without him. We have managed to beat Panama and gave a good account of ourselves against Mexico on both legs without him, we even managed to beat the untied states without him or the other first team defenders.

As far as I can see our team plays with more intensity defensively when we have to make do with fringe players. I say let’s work with what we have and make do, just as long as we have a couple of goal scorers we should be fine. I know Dennis Lawrence is going to shock a lot of the naysayers.

Hodge ruled out of Gold Cup with suspected ACL injury
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago have lost the services of US-based defender Triston Hodge after the player suffered a suspected torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) while in training with his club Memphis 901 on Tuesday.

Hodge had been selected to the 40-man Gold Cup provisional roster by head coach Dennis Lawrence but has now been ruled out for an undisclosed time. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on June 4th.

Lawrence is already without Norway-based defender Sheldon Bateau while Costa Rican-based defender Aubrey David is awaiting his US visa.

The T&T squad departs for Aichi on Friday evening for an international friendly against Japan on June 5th before facing Canada in Los Angeles on June 10th. T&T’s opening Concacaf Gold Cup encounter is against Panama on June 18th in Minnesota.

Hodge, on loan to Memphis from W Connection has been a regular starter for T&T in its recent friendlies against Iran and Wales.

This is unfolding into a tragedy of sorts. Hodge was the presumptive starter in that position. Of all the lines on the field, DL had his 4 down pat. In a matter of days, no Bateau and no Hodge. I was looking forward to seeing Triston play on the GC stage. He's very technical, comfortable on the ball, could play his way out of difficulty unaided and had the potential to be very expressive with the ball at his feet and JJ in front of him.

Steups.

I wasn't leaving Judah Garcia home unless ... unless I found another Judah Garcia. Not this rounds.

What did Shahdon Winchester have to do to not make this squad? Where is the clear added value?

Leston Paul you need to step your game up. The too frequent losses of possession, the extra seconds of dwelling on the ball that kill the playing progression and that rarely advance the play. If yuh want ah could put together a highlight video of all the above across recent NT performances, if there's any doubt. Get it together. We need you to sort out your kinks, tick and play with heightened concentration and  be more positive in your pass selection. I don't expect accuracy to improve overnight, but this rounds you have to bring an impact not just a role. There's no rule against you travelling with the ball. You tend to win fouls. It would be great if you could win them in slightly advanced areas of play.

Perhaps the US Embassy should have sent a player of its choice or its preferred GC roster. Tired ah de visa interference.

Lawrence selects Final 23-man Gold Cup roster.
TTFA Media.

Following today’s international friendly with Japan which ended 0-0 in Aichi, Trinidad and Tobago head coach Dennis Lawrence finalised a 23-man roster for the Concacaf Gold Cup 2019.

Lawrence spent the past few weeks working with members at home-based training camp prior to the friendly with Japan and also assessed the overseas-based players in their respective leagues.

For the final selection, Lawrence was forced to go without Costa Rican-based defender Aubrey David, Ross Russell Jr. and Willis Plaza due to the fact that these players were still without US travel visas and he could not risk the possibility of the individuals not obtaining the necessary documents before T&T’s campaign. Sheldon Bateau was not considered due to unavailability while Triston Hodge tore his ACL last week.

Coming into the squad is Minnesota United’s Kevin Molino, Orlando City goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh, Seattle Sounders’ Joevin Jones and Energy FC’s Cordell Cato while former national under 17 defender and current Charleston Battery player Leland Archer has earned a maiden call up.

“We’ve got another match against Canada on June 10th after we travel tomorrow to Los Angeles. The main thing for us has been preparing for the Gold Cup. We’ve worked with a few of the players at home over the past few weeks and we had a very good exercise in terms of the match with Japan,” Lawrence said. “Our focus now continues on the Gold Cup.”

Again. From a 40 man roster with 4 forwards.......only 1 make the final 23 man cut. And based of the last warm up against Japan that single lone forward still not even certain to play ??? ??? ???

Warriors Assemble in LA for Gold Cup campaign.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men’s team was assembled in full on Friday at Irvine Spectrum Centre in Los Angeles as the squad arrived ahead of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup following a nine-hour journey from Tokyo following last Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with Japan in Aichi.

US-based players Minnesota United midfielder Kevin Molino, Seattle Sounders’ Joevin Jones, Charleston Battery first time call up Leland Archer, Cordell Cato and Orlando City goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh arrived in LA on Thursday night and all took part in the team’s training session on Friday morning at Great Park.

T&T faces Canada in a closed-door match on Monday at 3pm (6pm TT time) as both teams continue their preparations for the Gold Cup. T&T captain Khaleem Hyland spoke about the state of the team less than two weeks ahead of the opening clash with Panama in Minnesota.

“The boys worked their socks off in the last match and although we wanted to do more offensively, I think we had a great effort against Japan. Results like this one away from home gives us hope and positive feedback for the team. Now that game is past us and we have Canada and Panama to look ahead to. It gives us hope going into the Canada game which we have to take very seriously as well to get a good result to take us into the Gold Cup.

“We got stuck late in the game in our previous games before Japan but we were able to come away with a draw this time which shows that we are improving in each match. The coach believes in the quality we have in the team and he showed that he has balls to make changes and try new things like we did against Japan. He gives the squad confidence by making decisions like he has.

“We have to look after ourselves for the next few days. We have to keep our heads on our shoulders, work hard, listen to the instructions and carry out our roles and functions into the Canada Game and the Gold Cup. It’s good to have the full squad together now with Kevin (Molino), Cordell (Cato) and Joevin (Jones) back with us as well as Greg (Ranjitsingh) and young Leland Archer,” Hyland said.

Defender Daneil Cyrus put in a solid shift against Japan and is hoping to be at his best throughout the Gold Cup.

“It wasn’t very surprised with the way we went out there and put in a good showing against Japan. I always believe in this squad and the way the coach prepares us for matches don’t matter how tough the opponent is. What we did was show that we are a determined bunch and this is what it will take for us to get results in the Gold Cup. Personally I felt good out there and hopefully I can stay just as solid and injury free for our entire Gold Cup campaign,” Cyrus added.

Trinidad and Tobago 23-man Gold Cup Squad

Goalkeepers:

Adrian Foncette (Police FC), Marvin Phillip (Central FC), Gregory Ranjitsingh (Orlando City—USA);

Defenders:

Alvin Jones (OKC Energy FC—USA), Leland Archer (Charleston Battery—USA), Daneil Cyrus (Al Orobah—Saudi Arabia), Carlyle Mitchell (La Horquetta Rangers), Curtis Gonzales (Defence Force), Mekeil Williams (Oklahoma City Energy FC—USA);

Midfielders:

Kevan George (Charlotte Independence—USA), Neveal Hackshaw (Indy Eleven—USA), Akeem Humphrey (Club Sando), Leston Paul (Memphis 901 FC—USA), Khaleem Hyland (Al Faisaly FC—Saudi Arabia), Duane Muckette (Memphis 901 FC—USA), Cordell Cato (Oklahoma City Energy FC—USA), Levi Garcia (Kiryat Shmona—Israel), Kevin Molino (Minnesota United—USA), Nathan Lewis (Lansing Ignite—USA), Lester Peltier (Al Orobah—Saudi Arabia), Jomal Williams (W Connection), Joevin Jones (Seattle Sounders—USA);

Forward:

Shahdon Winchester (W Connection).

So Shahdon Winchester eh score a goal for he club last season and Marcus Joseph was de pro league top scorer and he eh make de final cut?

I thought Lawrence only picking players who active for their clubs?

Ah like Winchester eh, he improve a lot, but Marcus should be they too.

Can Bou Play's Leland Archer called up to Gold Cup
https://www.canbouplayfoundation.com/leland-archer-called-up-for-gold-cu (https://www.canbouplayfoundation.com/leland-archer-called-up-for-gold-cu)

One of Can Bou Play's newest members, Leland Archer has been called up to the Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Men's team for the 2019 Gold Cup.

While Archer has represented T&T at youth level, this is his first selection on the senior squad and it's an opportunity that he is relishing.

"It's always a privilege to play for your country, especially now at the highest level. So I think that it's an honor being called up to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Gold Cup," said the Charleston Battery defender Archer.

"It's a big tournament but I think we have a good group of boys here and it will be a good tournament."

Trinidad and Tobago will open their 2019 Gold Cup duties when they face Panama on 18 June, before battling USA and Guyana on the 22nd and 26th June.

One player who knows exactly what Archer is going through is CBP founder Yohance Marshall.

Four years ago at the 2015 Gold Cup, Marshall starred for Trinidad and Tobago and scored the last gasp header versus Mexico in the scintillating 4-4 stalemate that many regard as the greatest Gold Cup match of all time.

"It's huge for him! I'm just glad and happy for him that he could get the opportunity," stated Marshall about Archer's call up.

"The opportunity to play for your country, in a competitive environment and in a competitive tournament is something completely out of this world. You see the difference with how that experience is really supposed to be. It's intense."

"I've represented T&T in the CFU too but its different when it comes to the Gold Cup. You come up against top quality opponents. And just the stadiums and the environments that you going to go into, the crowds, the fans, 50,000 every game. That experience you will remember for the rest of your life."

"I just want him to enjoy it and soak it all in."

Archer joined up with the squad in L.A. after T&T's friendly international in Japan and will be eyeing a place in the team as Dennis Lawrence's unit play their final warm up match versus Canada on 10 June.

Sancho: Gold Cup will be tough for T&T
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

FORMER T&T central defender Brent Sancho says the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup will be tough for TT.

The bi-annual tournament will run from June 15 to July 7 with a total of 16 teams participating at venues in the United States, Costa Rica and Jamaica.

T&T were placed in Group D alongside Guyana, Panama and United States.

The national team's first game will be on June 18 against 2018 World Cup participants Panama, who placed fifth in the 2017 Gold Cup.

T&T, who failed to qualify for the 2017 edition, have never reached a Gold Cup final. In 2015, they reached the quarter-finals under then coach Stephen Hart, but their best performance was in 2000 when they made it to the semi-finals under Bertille St Clair.

Sancho said that while the team has been defending well, more goals and more possession is crucial if they want to achieve this. The team lost 1-0 in a friendly match against Wales in March and drew 0-0 with Japan on Wednesday.

"We haven't looked dangerous, we haven't been very possessive. Possessing the ball is so important in international football, it's so important that you spend that time on the ball," Sancho said. "We haven't scored much. Gold Cup games tend to be tight. If I were to go on what I've seen, we don't really have a potent 'out there' striker. Goals win matches."

T&T winger Cordell Cato scored three goals in 11 appearances for his USL (United Soccer League) Championship club Oklahoma City for the 2018/2019 season, and Neveal Hackshaw netted twice, in 11 appearances, for Indy Eleven.

Sancho, however, commended the squad on its recent draw against Japan. He says although they gave an "average" performance, they defended well.

"To fly to Japan and play the 26th ranked team in the world and draw is very commendable," he said. "But as well as we've been defending, if one of the boys could put on their scoring boots for the Gold Cup, that would be good."

He added that it is the most organised T&T squad he has seen in years.

The squad was announced on Wednesday by his former national teammate, current coach Dennis Lawrence.

Ross Russell Jr, Willis Plaza, and Aubrey David did not secure US travel visas in time, and are unable to participate in the tournament.

I’m really scared for the future of this team. reasons for my apprehension is for the simple fact that Levi garcia, neval hackshaw and Alvin Jones are the only stand outs who have at least two world cup qualifying left in them, all the rest are on their way out after this gold cup.

It’s worrisome that we don’t have a fair number of prospects coming up in the national set up to replace stand out players like molino 29- jovin 27- guerra 30- Peltier 31- in fact The Whole back line is over 28 yrs old with the exception if tristen hodges and Alvin jones and are on their way out after this world cup2022 and I don’t see any youth players that’s waiting in the wings to replace them. extremely worrisome indeed.

US and Guyana are coming off  back to back losses.  US went down1-0 to Jamaica and 3-0 to Venezuela and  Guyana lost 1-0 to Bermuda and 3-1 lost to Haiti in less than week. You will see a different USMNT for the Gold cup. Some significant changes are happening as we speak. The US roster for the upcoming gold cup will be far different than the one that played Venezuela and Jamaica.

T&T's men stay focused ahead of Gold Cup opener.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men’s Team arrived in Minneapolis in good spirits on Tuesday night ahead of their opening 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup encounter with Panama next Tuesday.

On the back of a 2-0 defeat to Canada on Monday, captain Khaleem Hyland and his teammates were back on the training field as head coach Dennis Lawrence conducted a training session on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite Monday’s loss, Hyland said there was a lot to anticipate ahead of the competition.

“The Canada game is out of the way. Yes it is disappointing to have lost the game and we were hoping to have something positive going into our first game but there were a few goos things we could take out of the match which I am certain and the coach and the technical staff will take this and use it to our benefit going into the Panama game,” Hyland told TTFA Media.

“The main thing is we have the full squad together and it was good to see guys like Kevin (Molino) and Cordell Cato getting game time and we had Greg (Ranjitsingh) also getting his first match for us. The other thing for us is that we are tight as a group and there ’s is an all for one one for all mentality within the squad which we will take into the Gold Cup,” Hyland said.

US-based defender Mekeil Williams said he was optimistic that the results would begin going in T&T’s favour.

“The performance and result against Japan was massive for us. We’ve been working hard and playing well for some time. We haven’t been getting the results but we have kept doing what the coach asked of us and the draw came. It has helped with our confidence going into the Gold Cup and I think it’s just a matter of time before the results start going our way.

“The Gold Cup is like our World Cup in the region. It’s exciting for us and something we are all looking forward to. If you look back at our past two Gold Cups, especially the last one in 2015, we started well. We had the 3-1 win over Guatemala last time after losing our final warm up to Jordan. We have an experienced squad now with Khaleem, Molino, Cyrus and a lot of the guys who have Gold Cup experience under their belts. We all have been playing together for a long time and we have a good friendship and bond both on and off the field. The key for us is to put the final puzzle together for the matches coming up and hopefully we can get that done for Panama on Tuesday,” Williams said.

T&T not intimidated by World Cup opponents in Gold Cup opener.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago will not be intimidated by the fact that they will face a Panama team that is coming off a World Cup appearance at Russia 2018 when both teams face off with each other in the Group D Gold Cup 2019 opener at the Allianz Field in Minnesota on Tuesday.

This was the feedback coming out of the T&T camp on Thursday as T&T continued their build up in Minneapolis ahead of the opening clash with training sessions at Blaine  Soccer Complex in Minneapolis which is also used by Kevin Molino’s club Minnesota United.

The conditions have been conducive for training with a slight chill throughout the day into late evening.

“I don’t think we have anything to be intimidated by. Yes Panama went to the last World Cup but we were able to get a win against them in the home qualifier. The key to us is to take it step by step and game by game. You always want to start with a win so we will be definitely going for that,” Alvin Jones told TTFA Media.

“The Japan game showed that we can match the top teams once we stay organised and disciplined. We know what we need to do in terms of our attack and we’ve been working on it. The group is going to be tough but it is not a challenge that we are not capable of overcoming. We have to work on what we need to in these next few days and take it into the match on Tuesday,” added the Oklahoma City Energy player.

His US-based teammate Leston Paul is also expecting T&T to pull out the stops from game one.

“Everyone is fully aware of the importance of this tournament. I am looking forward to it just as any other player. We all know this is the top level tournament of the region. The preparations have been good. Not just the Panama game but we had some quality friendlies before where we had to test ourselves against Wales, Iran and Thailand. Now it’s just about fine tuning and having everyone on he same page,” Paul said.

“My love for the sport and the national team keeps me going. Football is my motivation,” Paul added when asked what keeps him inspired for the game.

“So far qualifying for the Under 17 World Cup in 2007 and then the Under 20s in 200 but at the senior level it would have been the win over the US in 2017. Of course this being my first Goal Cup I am hugely motivated as I think we can do something of great significance here. We know about the rematch with the US but we need to start strongly against Panama and I think we have what it takes to start on the right note,” he said.

“We want to win this Gold Cup. That is how high we’ve set the bar for ourselves.”

With the Gold Cup kicking off on Saturday at the Rose Bown in Pasadena with Canada facing Martinique, Forbes has tipped Trinidad and Tobago as one of the teams to advance to the quarter finals. Forbes.com stated the following as the teams to advance – Quarter-finals: Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, USA, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Meantime, LA Galaxy II midfielder Ernesto Walker has been added to the 23-player roster for the Gold Cup after Panamanian midfielder Aníbal Godoy has been ruled out of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup due to injury.

Walker received his first senior call up with Panama earlier this year against the U.S. Men’s National Team in January.
The Gold Cup fever is beginning to grip the host cities and as part of its commitment to the football community, Allstate announced today it will designate an official “Day for Play” in select 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup™ cities ahead of key tournament matches. Free and open to the public, the Allstate “Day for Play” encourages soccer fans and players alike to get outside and celebrate their passion and love for the sport.

As a three-time sponsor of the biennial tournament, Allstate continues to reinforce its dedication to protecting the future of the game and its passionate fanbase. Allstate “Day for Play” celebrations will include pop-up soccer challenges and ticket giveaways ahead of select Gold Cup Tournament matches.

Gold Cup is T&T's chance at success.
By Alvin Corneal (Guardian).

In all my years of being part of our football development, I have found it very difficult to understand how or which route we took to bring our football to its present disarray.

I would have discarded the details of the past and looked forward to an improved state in the near future, especially as we are now geared with some truly talented players and a coach who seems to be very focused on taking our football to the next level and getting all our players, local and overseas-based, in readiness for the next week's CONCACAF Gold Cup kick-off.

The news which came out of the corridors of the TTFA regarding the decision to bypass the Olympic qualifying tournament, despite near qualification when we just missed entry to the final in England 2012, is disturbing.

This decision means that hundreds of teenage footballers and young men will have lost the opportunity to develop their game at the Olympic level. We must now replace that shortcoming with one of the organised competitions which are held in the USA, Brazil, France and England.

However, the Concacaf tournament which starts next Tuesday for our team against Panama in Minneapolis, USA, may well be a glorious step to bringing some respect for the countries in the region.

After the difficulties which the team faced with visa problems, the team can get still some encouragement after the goalless match against Japan and the 2-0 loss against Canada on Monday.

I have always felt that when playing away against teams with similar standards of play, the host country would be two goals better before the whistle blows, mainly through the atmosphere of huge crowd support, the inconvenience of flying across time zones, varying meal patterns and most of all long travelling, as was experienced en route to Japan last week and then back to North America.

As to the actual Gold Cup opening match, I expect that Panama is definitely within our victory radar. They have not demonstrated the strength of organisational play which could retain a clean sheet. The team has two central defenders who have been losing their competence over the past two years. Their recent friendlies have not said much, especially against Jamaica, whose physical and tactical game had brought some discomfort to Panama's “ageing” defence.

I reckon that the speed and clinical accuracy of passing by the Japanese, plus the rigours of Canadian-type play, may have been the ideal preparation lesson for T&T. From what I saw of Canada, they are excellent supporters of ball winning. This means their opponents (T&T in this case) must utilise quick rotations among the midfielders and make use of the penetrative passes to our quick-footed forwards.

A victory against Panama is vital because the USA, our next opponent, will probably defeat Guyana by a heavy margin. Readiness for any opponent is a priority for Dennis and his team. To my mind, there is a chance for our national team to step into the next round.

Gardner tips T&T to progress.
TTFA Media.

Cyrus wants strong start at Gold Cup.

As Trinidad and Tobago counts down to its opening match at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Tuesday against Panama, former Jamaican English-based stand out Ricardo Gardner is tipping both T&T and Jamaica to push themselves to the limit in this year’s edition of the competition. Gardner says it about time both teams carry the Caribbean’s hopes at the competition and further into the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

It’s great for our region to see Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago and so many other Caribbean teams involved in the Gold Cup,” Gardner told TTFA Media recently

“It’s now just up to us to take advantage of this opportunity and stamp our authority in the region. It would be great to see one of these teams go on to win the Gold Cup. Jamaica has gotten to two finals and now it would be good to see more teams from the region making it that far and going all the way.

The former Bolton Wanderers left winger who has 111 appearances for Jamaica said he would fancy seeing T&T and Jamaica in Qatar 2022.

“I think definitely the potential is there. We just have to keep working and developing as a football nation and making use of the opportunities like the Gold Cup and the Nations League and just keep building… would be great to see these countries together at the next World Cup,” Gardner added.

As T&T continued its preparations at the Blaine Soccer Complex in Minnesota, T&T defender Daneil Cyrus wants to see his team take charge from the onset.

“We have to be switched on from the start. All now we are focused on Panama but when we get on the pitch we have to settle early and take the game to them. Our first game is the most important at this time because the group looks tough on paper but we know what we are capable of,” Cyrus told TTFA Media.

“The main thing is for us to start fast and maintain the pressure on the opponent. The moment we lapse we know we can get punished. So far we have been working some serious sessions to correct our weak areas and to try and polish up where we need to. Tuesday’s match is a big moment for us. I have close to 80 caps already but there are some first timers in the team who I know are very anxious to play in the Gold Cup and they will be looking to make the most of it,” Cyrus added.

T&T faces Panama in the first game of a double header on Tuesday at the Allianz Field in Minnesota. USA takes on Guyana in the second fixture on the night.

Williams vows to push for glory at Gold Cup.
TTFA Media.

From Piccadilly to Allianz Field

Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Jomal Williams is banking on the right combination of youth, experience and strong team chemistry to push the national team through at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Williams, a 25-year-old W Connection player from Piccadilly Street in Port of Spain is currently in Minnesota with the Senior Team preparing for Tuesday’s opener against Panama at the Allianz Field.

The former Mexican-based midfielder scored two first half goals to pace T&T to a 7-0 win over local club team Minnesota Eclipse in a training match at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Thursday evening. T&T’s other goals were scored by Levi Garcia, a penalty by Kevin Molino, Nathan Lewis and one each from Cordell Cato and Shahdon Winchester.

“We are coming together nicely at the moment,” Williams told TTFA Media. “You could never really do enough or think that you have done enough because in your mind there’s always more to be done but at this time I think we are putting in the work and should be ready in time for Panama,” he added.

“It’s a challenging assignment but we came to do something at this Gold Cup. We’ve been working for a long time for this.

“To some extent we know that we are outsiders because all the talk is about USA and Mexico and well Panama has been to the last World Cup and Jamaica were in the last two finals. But we use that as motivation to prove them otherwise. We know it’s going to be difficult but we have shown that we can compete once we put out heads together and play to our best,” Williams added.

Williams wants to represent his home community and the only way he knows is by putting his best out on the pitch.

“It hasn’t been easy coming from Piccadilly street. There are a lot of distractions and if you don’t have a strong head it can break you. People don’t really class where I come from as a good place to live but as I see it as one of my obstacles that I need to cross in my life and it just motivates be to go on do better. I grow with these people so I understand them and I just try to live in love with everyone,” he said.

“It’s most important to represent my people, my community and my country. I feel very happy to be able to show not just Trinidad and Tobago by also the world that coming from Piccadilly street, coming from Laventille, there are good things coming from them and it’s a happy feeling to be able to represent where I am from. This keeps motivated and keeps me going because I know there are a lot of young kids looking up at me and I have a responsibility that i need to keep moving forward to show them that aye look, we can still become something regardless of where we come from,” Williams said.

And the Gold Cup stage will be the main stage for him over the next two weeks.

“It is something I’ve always wanted to achieve… playing in a Gold Cup with the national team. What has motivated me the most is the gaffer (Dennis Lawrence). He has always showed belief in me and I’m just working hard everyday to make it.”

“Playing with Hyland and Molino and the rest of the guys is an honour. They motivate me a lot on the training pitch. Playing with these guys gives you no choice but to want to play football. The difference in the squad when it comes to the competitiveness to earn spots is who wants it more and then it’s up to the gaffer to select who he wants on the field,” Williams continued.

Trinidad and Tobago ready for Gold Cup opener
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men’s entered official CONCACAF competition time and territory on Sunday, matchday-2 ahead of Tuesday’s CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019 opener against Panama at the Allianz Field in Minnesota.

Head coach Dennis Lawrence oversaw an afternoon training session at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium as the team settled back at the team hotel for the remainder of the day. The team contingent took part in CONCACAF Team Arrival meetings and passport checks. The official training will take place at the game venue on Monday evening while Lawrence will also attend the official Pre-match press conference along with a player.

“The mood is quite good and everyone is staying switched on in terms of our focus and mission for the opening match on Tuesday,” team skipper Khaleem Hyland told TTFA Media.

“We’ve had some good, solid sessions including today’s one and the vibe and focus is up at the moment. It’s now about being mentally ready, taking care of what we need to in terms of preparation and going into the game knowing what we are here for,” he added.

Israel-based winger Levi Garcia is also anticipating his first Gold Cup appearance. “It’s a huge moment for me as a young player and someone who has never been to the Gold Cup before. But all in all,  I think all the players know how major this is for us. We want to make a big impression and to do that we need to play well and get good results. We are going to give it everything and hopefully we’ll make a strong start in our first game against Panama,” Garcia said.

In related news, defender Aubrey David will join the Trinidad and Tobago Men’s team for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Following a lengthy delay, David was granted his US Visa on Friday and will link up with his teammates in the United States. He will come into the 23-man squad for Charleston Battery defender Leland Archer who will leave the camp on Wednesday following the opening group match versus Panama on Tuesday.David who plays for Deportivo Saprissa in Costa Rica,  will join the T&T squad in Minnesota on Sunday and will train with the squad ahead of Tuesday’s encounter for which he is eligible.

The T&T team has a used facility which has some interesting history to it. Thanks to a generous gift of US$900,000 from Deborah Olson, given in the name of her mother Elizabeth Lyle Robbie, and $1.2 million appropriated from the Minnesota state legislature, the University of Minnesota soccer program built a home of its own in the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Elizabeth Lyle Robbie became the first female owner of a professional sports franchise in the United States when she purchased the Miami Toros soccer team in the mid-’70s. The Toros then moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., before relocating to the Twin Cities and becoming the Minnesota Strikers between the 1983 and 1984 seasons. She owned the team until the franchise disbanded in 1988. During her ownership, the Strikers played for the MISL Championship in 1986.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men will be aiming to start their 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign on a winning note when they face off with Panama in the first Group D match of a double header at Allianz Field in Minnesota on Tuesday.T&T will raise the curtains from 6:30pm (7:30pm TT time) with the United States taking on Guyana from 9:00pm

Allianz is the home venue of Kevin Molino’s Minnesota United and the T&T squad got their first feel of the venue as head coach Dennis Lawrence conducted the official training session on Monday evening. A capacity crowd of 19,000 is expected for the double header.

T&T’s last Gold Cup outing was a quarter final encounter with the Panamanians in the quarter finals of the 2015 competition. T&T went out 6-5 on penalties after nine rounds of kicks following a 1-1 scoreline after extra time. T&T then won a home 2018 World Cup qualifier 1-0 on a Kevin Molino winner before losing 3-0 in Panama City.

“At this point in time I don’t think history will play a part,” Hyland told TTFA Media. “This is a new competition. There are new faces on board, new ambitions, new atmosphere, in a different country and none of us are home. It’s all up for the grabs so we have to take front before front takes us and hopefully we can get the three points,” he added.

“The mood is great and everyone is gelling and doing their tasks that they have been asked to do by the head coach and the staff. In every major tournament your first game is one of the most important and in these tournaments you have to take it game by game. This game game we know is going to be a difficult one. We know the strengths of Panama and we know they are a hardworking team but we have to match them throughout the game,” Hyland continued.

The Saudi Arabia based midfielder, formerly of Belgium side Racing Genk had a brief message for the T&T faithful, saying “I just want the fans to keep faith in us. This is your team. We believe in ourselves and you have to believe in us and it will only happen if we come together as one country, one nation and that’s the only way things will get better… by supporting each other.”

Meantime, defender Aubrey David has joined the Trinidad and Tobago Men’s team for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Following a lengthy delay, David was granted his US Visa on Friday and linked up with teammates in the United States. lord knows jamaica is not one of my favored teams but give credit where it’s due, jamaica out played honduras from start to finish and Honduras only scored when jamaica took their feet off the pedal. I don’t even believe that Honduras could beat the Salvadorans based on their performance last evening.

Seriously? What game were you watching, bro? Jamaica was far superior to Honduras. The score is 3-2 because Jamaica was showing off in the second half. This Jamaica team is definitely a contender.

T&T’s history at the Concacaf Gold Cup.
By Yohance Simonette (Newsday).

Part II – 1989 Concacaf Championships

DUBBED the “Strike Squad” during the qualifying campaign, this looked to be T&T’s best chance to go to Italia ‘90, featuring players such as Anton Corneal, Hutson Charles, Dexter Skeene, and two “little-known” youngsters, Russell Latapy and Dwight Yorke. The Strike Squad beat Guyana 5-0 on aggregate to qualify for the championships. The top two teams from the final round would go on to the World Cup.

T&T drew their first match against the USA in Torrence California thanks to an 88th minute goal by Hutson Charles. The next game against Costa Rica came down to the wire again for the Strike Squad. Charles sends a cross into the box. A Trinidadian player gets a head on to it but it was deflected by the Costa Rican keeper but Philbert Jones (uncle of retired T&T captain Kenwyne Jones) corrals the ball and puts the ball in the back of the net to gain another point for the T&T cause. Costa Rica would come back the following month to beat T&T 1-0 who would later rebound with a 2-0 win again El Salvador thanks to a double from Leonson Lewis in front of a packed National Stadium. Both goals off corners. Lewis gathered a headed ball and struck it past the keeper. The other Lewis headed himself towards the back of the net.

The Strike Squad would go into El Salvador and come out with a draw then won two straight games against Guatemala. The first win came in Guatemala City with a 57th minute goal from Kerry Jamerson from outside the box. The second was at home in Port-of Spain where Philbert Jones would equalise thanks to a well placed ground cross in the six-yard box from Charles. The game would remain tied until the 88th minute when after a free kick was taken out of the box, a ball was lined up outside of the box and Kerry Jamerson just shot it like a gun to the bottom-left corner of the goal, to pick up three more crucial points. This put T&T at second place in the table ahead of the US who would go on to draw two of their next three games.

The game: T&T vs United States. The venue: National Stadium in Port-of-Spain. The date: November 19, 1989 – "Red Day". The stakes: one team goes on with Costa Rica as a representative of Concacaf in Italia 90. The other team, watches on the couch. A win or draw for the Strike Squad gets them to the World Cup. America has to win, period.

In the 30th minute, in front of a "Sea of Red", American defensive midfielder Paul David Caligiuri receives a pass from Bruce Murray, cuts right to avoid his man, fires from outside the box with a left-footed shot that gets past goalkeeper Michael Maurice, the only goal of the game. The Strike Squad went full on attack in the second half but it was to no avail. “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World” would once again keep T&T out of the World Cup. The spectators of Trinidad and Tobago were awarded the FIFA Fair Play Award in 1989 for good behaviour at the game, despite the heart-breaking loss and overcrowded stadium.

The Gold Cup Era

In 1991, Concacaf would create what we know today as the Gold Cup, with it’s round-robin group stage and subsequent knock-out rounds. In the competition's first four editions, T&T would fail to make it out of the group stages, with only two wins in that span and did not making the Gold Cup in 1993. At the turn of the millenium, T&T would go on to advance further in the Gold Cup than they have before and to date.

Finishing runners-up to Jamaica in the Caribbean Cup allowed T&T to qualify for the 2000 Gold Cup. Apart from Concacaf members, Colombia, Peru and South Korea were invited to participate in the competition as well. In Group C, T&T would suffer a hard defeat against Concacaf powerhouse Mexico but would later advance out of the group with a 4-2 victory against Guatemala with goal contributions from the likes of Latapy, Dwarika, Yorke and David Nakhid.

They met Costa Rica in the quarterfinals where Arnold Dwarika would open up the scoring in the 26th minute, and held off the charge from Los Ticos until star striker Paulo Wanchope score the equalizer at the 89th minute. But early in extra time, substitute Mickey Trotman would score the golden goal in the 92nd minute to propel Trinidad and Tobago to the semi-finals for the first time in their Gold Cup history. They would go on to lose 1-0 to Canada in the semi-final who would later shock Colombia to win their first Gold Cup and their first major football trophy since 1985. T&T would feature 3 players in the Gold Cup Best XI: Russell Latapy, Arnold Dwarika and Dwight Yorke.

After 2000, Trinidad and Tobago would see little success in the competition to come. In 2002, they didn’t make it out of the group stage. They missed the Gold Cup in 2003. Even the Gold Cups that bookended their 2006 World Cup appearance (2005 and 2007), the Soca Warriors failed to register wins and would finish last in their respective groups. They would go on to miss the next two Gold Cups in 2009 and 2011.

AFTER four years and missing the last two iterations, T&T will be making their return to the Concacaf Gold Cup for the tenth time in our football history.

The last time T&T competed in the biennial event, they played like one of the better teams in the tournament, took on one of the giants of Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), played arguably one of the greatest games in Gold Cup history and was later sent home on penalties in a game they believed they should have won.

With a change in the qualification process through FIFA’s addition of the Nations League, T&T were able to qualify directly to the Gold Cup through participating in the FIFA World Cup Qualifying Hexagonal. Our group consists of perennial favorites USA, Panama who knocked us out back in 2015 and Gold Cup debutants Guyana.

For those who don’t know, the Gold Cup is Concacaf’s continental football tournament that is held every two years. Think of it as the Americas’ version of the European Championships or Africa’s Cup of Nations. From 1973 to 1989, the tournament was the gateway to the World Cup for Concacaf teams. From 1991 to 2017 the winner would represent the confederation in the now defunct FIFA Confederations Cup. As the Gold Cup, this would be TT’s tenth, but they have been active in 15 iterations of Concacaf’s continental tournament.

Concacaf Championship

T&T first took part in what was then known as the Concacaf Championships in 1967. Also referred to as the NORCECA Championships, this would be T&T’s first crack in the tournament after not entering the inaugural tournament in 1963 and withdrawing from the second tournament due to scheduling conflicts with World Cup qualifying for the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England.

Ten teams participated in the qualification stage in two groups. T&T would qualify through one of the group stages that was hosted in Jamaica under the title of the Red Stripe Trophy, finishing second in the group. T&T were one of the six teams that played in a round-robin style final tournament that saw Guatemala win their only Gold Cup. T&T finished fourth in the table with two wins and three losses, scoring six goals that came from players such as Alvin Corneal, Gerry Brown, Kelvin Berassa, Warren “Laga” Archibald and Pat Small.

After a fifth place showing in 1969, T&T would later host the fifth edition of the Concacaf Championships in 1971. Fixtures were played in the Queen’s Park Oval and – at the time – King George V Park in Port-of-Spain, the Arima Velodrome and Skinner Park in San Fernando. T&T didn’t play to the level the home fans expected however. After a 1-1 draw in their first game against Honduras, they would go on to lose 2 of their next three three games, including a 6-0 drubbing against Haiti. The third was a 2-2 draw against Cuba. After rounding out the competition with a 3-1 win against Costa Rica, T&T would finish fifth in their home tournament, with Mexico winning the tournament for the second time.

The 1973 Concacaf Championships

T&T would bounce back in 1973 when Haiti hosted the tournament for the first time. After winning their qualifying group that featured an 11-1 beatdown of Antigua and Barbuda, with hat-tricks from Steve David and Noel “Sammy” Llewellyn, T&T looked like one of the teams to beat in a final round that featured host nation Haiti, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and the Netherlands Antilles. Qualification for the 1974 World Cup was also on the line for the winner; the first time the competition would double as a World Cup qualifier. The nickname “el Hexagonal” was also used for the first time, even though six teams in the final round was the usual number of participants since 1965.

The 1973 Concacaf Championships were mired in controversy. T&T would play Haiti on December 4, 1973. T&T were looking to rebound after losing the opening game against Honduras, and Haiti would be riding momentum from a 3-0 win over the Netherland Antilles three days prior. The game would go on to favor Haiti in a 2-1 win butas El Salvador referee Jose Roberto Henriquez disallowed five T&T goals (three goals in 20 minutes) in what looked like a one-sided affair. Together Henriquez and Canadian linesman James Higuet were banned for life by FIFA after the tournament. They would finish the tournament strong however, rattling off four straight victories, including our best victory against Mexico featuring goals from David who would go on to lead the tournament with seven goals, Archibald and Everald “Gally” Cummings. T&T would place second, their best ever finish in a Concacaf tournament.

They finished two points shy to Haiti, leaving T&T fans feeling cheated at an opportunity at seeing their nation qualify for the World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history. After not qualifying for the next two tournaments and not making it out of the group stage in 1985, T&T would have another opportunity to qualify for the World Cup, in 1989.

(To be continued)

Mexico was clearly better than Canada, but Canada fashioned quite a few chances and with a bit more composure/quality up front, they could have drawn that game.

From Alvin

Panama was clearly a better team than we have seen in recent times. They were well organised in defence and more importantly, they were much faster to the ball than our players.

The selection process is something which I never challenge simply because these players have been showing their worth in practice sessions. The coach may also have a strategy for a play which defeated us in the recent past.

My observation was almost immediately with our defence, not necessarily from their individual ability, but from a serious lack of communication in terms of the defensive policy. Their support for each other across the field was vulnerable, causing chaos within the strength of the Panamian midfielders when we attacked from the flanks and drawing wing backs to remain wide, a factor which allowed us penetrative opportunities in the middle of the field.

Unfortunately, Daniel Cyrus which I have seen in the past did not produce the aggression, the speed level he's known for, and together with Alvin Jones, they gave the ball away quick and easily.

Our major weakness, in general, was the lethargic approach to close down on their crafty and creative midfield opponents, giving them the chance to use some penetrative passing lanes. This brought out the best in our goalkeeper Marvin Phillips, whose contribution was brilliant just as he was against Japan, but he could not have been better in this game. He actually saved shots which he received from unmarked opponents, all of which were travelling rapidly towards the corners of the goal.

Actually, some may have challenged the absence of Joevin Jones at the start, but Levi Garcia worked very skilfully to dribble past the Panama central defence, almost getting some results, three of which he kicked overbars.

Our game was lost because of the absence of any constructive playmaker. It was sad to see Kevin Molino on the field displaying a limited quality play compare to what he's accustomed displaying.

Khaleem Hyland was also an under-performer. It was either the greater speed level by Panama's five-man midfield, which produced most of the match's goalscoring opportunities. What could have been more potent for the Soca Warriors, was to use Jones on the right flank from the start. This would have deprived the Panamanian left-side midfielder of going forward. His duty would have changed into a man marker for Jones, especially when brother Alvin was having a nightmare.

Well both teams was playing the game according to the coach be playing carefully and don't rush anything even if we are EL- SALVADOR don't win we both will have a POINT each. So I'll take the 1 POINT rather losing the game, HELL look what happen to HONDURAS coming out on full blasting rushing and playing fast and not taking a calmer approach to the game, Now they got beat by Curaçao and sitting at the BOTTOM of the group with no point

To see Curacao go toe to toe with the US is a sign that CFU teams are getting better. However when you juxtapose how they are playing against the US and how we played against them. It is a grim reminder of the depth of our football crisis in this country. Curacao looks well drilled and well organised. Even if they lose to the US, they equipped themselves well and represented well. TnT were a complete embarrassment to themselves and the region. Yet the president of our federation was happy with the management of the team at this Gold Cup.

After watching Jamaica and curaçao today and how they fought and particularly Jamaica who played like they were playing to save themselves from capital punishment i conclude that our players deserve zero fan support. they out hustled and beat Panama to every ball and played with pride and urgency and you could see the passion for their nation written all over their faces as to say we are Jamaica.

curacao also played a very solid game. their passing was crisp and I was pleasantly surprised to see no errant passing they were compact organized and played an intelligent brand of football instead of trying to split the USA defense with constant hail marry passes like our players are branded for and sticking with that kind of mad irrational football.

it truly pains me to see our lads out there playing with no intensity and urgency while giving the ball away over and over again, these lads just don’t play for the love of country like the rest of the regional teams and they should be ashamed of themselves.

I respectfully beg to differ and think its a disservice to Curacao. Of the starting lineup 5 were born in Curacao and 6 born in Holland. I lived in Curacao for almost two years, many regular women used to go to Holland to have their children and come right back to Curacao after being discharged from hospital so simply having place of birth as Holland may only tell half the story. In any event, Trinidad now seems to have an agenda of freezing out foreign born players, so that's on us for not capitalising on all the resources at our disposal. Pro league local born players who have not played a competitive league match for the year starting over foreign born who have actually played for the season.

Dennis Lawrence saying we are punching above our weight. What will he say for Curacao? Their population is 160,000. When I played there in 2005, they had 1 field with grass, their national stadium. Its a very, very dry place with very little rainfall. I'm just tired of the excuses DL and DJW come up with.

i tend to agree. I guess I wasn’t paying attention when people were complaining about him not liking foreign born players but now my eyes were opened when he purposefully ignored Ranjitsingh whom I’m sure is just as good as jack stefan if not better, to play of all people marvin phillip, you guys have no idea how that action disturbed me. it was just so unnecessary and blatantly disrespectful to the players. I am very sure half this team must have felt the same and don’t really want to play for lawrence anymore.

There has never been a leader like Don Basil Matthews in TT someone that was not only a great leader but he had the vision and foresight to think out of the box someone with class and morality in TT far much more the football fraternity.

E G Cummings who was part of the 1973 fiasco developed his own football philosophy for how TT should play football the rest of the coach's from TT does not have that they are just doing what they were tought English man football they will never get it the next generation is already there but without someone who has the vision and philosophy its gone.

When the hell will we learn??

Last night i watch jamaica do the same ting we and guyana did, give too much possession, time and space on the ball to the USMNT, and just like clock work they made them pay once again. when in da fork will we realize dat you don't allow dangerous players to roam free to make plays and set up mediocre players to score goals.

This USMNT will never dog a team with pedigree bc they woulda put two bodies on christian pulisic and lock dat down!! another one who wouldn't have that freedom to make plays would be mc kinney, just watch on sunday how the mexicans will put two players on those two shit hounds and leave the scoring up to one of the fringe players.

It's only against caribbean opposition that pulisic is allowed to shine, lets see how he fears against real opposition, i bet he will put down pure shit cakes, and will become a non entity come sunday.

just look how they never took any chances with KJ, it was onyewo, bocanegra and bradly that would lock on to KJ and stern not giving them the slightest opportunity to get a sniff on goal and last night was no different.

They stuck to leon baily like glue not giving him an inch, and every time he touched the ball there was a double and triple team on him in effect.

I say it's high time these dunce mdafckers running our football make an exit, and allow people with ideas to run the football or else we bun down dey forkane house and run dem outa town. we as a people need to get serious and get violent with these clowns, fork dat! it's the only way!!

Thank god for mexico. or else those arrogant yankee broadcasters would have a field day bragging about the monumental achievement in “soccer” today with victories in men’s and women’s national teams, and I would not have been able to sleep for a week, but I’m so happy that mexico spoil the party. I guess mexico is the big brother who silenced the big bad bully who has been taking advantage of the little kids in the neighborhood. Well done mexico you deserved it.

I maintain that your team is as good as your goal keeper, did any body watch zack Stefan and guillermo ochoa? those lads were fantastic tonight pulling off some incredible saves and keeping their teams in the game all the way to the last play. did you see the passion on the faces of the players and the disappointment on the faces of the losers, no calm cool and collective attitudes but passion and commitment and that’s what we’re lacking.

I heard a sport commentator last week saying “thanks to marvin Phillip” or the results could have been worst and this had me baffled because I believe if we had a better goalie who actually knew what he was doing he probably would have let in zero goals.

and this is the kind of low expectations and poor mentality we have in trinidad where we reward failure and shower mediocrity with praise.......now why thanks........didn’t this sloppy foolish custodian just let in eight goals in two games?

tonight had it not been for ochoa Mexico could have loss the game terribly. I maintain your team is as good as the man between the sticks. dennis take a page from the Mexican coach and get with it.

You actually gonna compare 11 shots 3 on target to 44 shots 19 on target, to disparage your shot stopper ?

I  jus doh understand he here either, I don't rate Phillips either but to throw him under the bus for massive team failing is jus unfair agenda pushing....few goalkeepers woulda have a chance with almost zero help fromd defenders in front of you

yes I will. it’s also the goal keeper’s responsibility to organize his defense and if his defenders in front of him are out of position or sloppy then he will invite attackers to have a crack at him, every GK knows this all too well.

and another thing, Shaka hislop got bombarded worst than this in germany in the opening game vs sweden where zlatan alone must have had about 10 cracks at goal, never mind Larson.....he was wondering what on earth did he have to do to score on this team, and these two were top shelf attackers in europe not some up starts who ply their trade in MLS. in fact the whole swedish team probably had at least two shots on goal heading shaka’s way and he weathered it, that’s what world class goal keepers is supposed to do.

this is why we gets no where as a nation, it’s simply because our standards are low so our expectations are even lower. this is a goal keeper who does not inspire confidence in his team mates, he’s often in a poor position or off his line when attackers come calling or running out at attackers never getting the ball and leaving his goal exposed.

there’s no way you could sell me this guy he’s rubbish who doesn’t belong no where close to international football, and another thing, if he was in goal that night in couva the USA would have been in russia last summer.

dread nutten dat happen in at least 4 ah dem six goal went down in Germany, Sweden work for every shot because d defenders didn't stop or give up, the defensive unit failed collectively in this GC....I not holding no brief for Phillips, I want him gone or relegated to backup too, but yuh talking shit given d circumstances of dat game....at no point last night did I see US or Mex defenders hang dey GK out to dry, good saves notwithstanding

so you blame the defense for him running out missing the ball and the attacker while tripping up hyland in one failed swoop leaving the goal wide open for a tap in, when clearly hyland was defending the play and there was no need for him to leave his line like a dum dum trying to play defender?

or what about when he was way out on the 6 yard line when donkey kong gyasi basic zardes looked like naymar curling that shot for the third goal of the night when if he was on his line it would have been a simple catch, was the defense culpable then?

Or what about the many countless times when this guy punched simple crosses for attacking players to follow up and score when in the first place he should be catching those crosses? you can’t tell me nothing about this keeper that I don’t already know. when he featured with latapy in 2009 onwards I saw all the many flaws and wanted kelvin jack or ince to make a return because I didn’t trust him or JM Williams in goal period.

dennis is an idiot for letting him back on this team. for the whole World Cup campaign Steve hart stood clear of the guy because he learned his lesson in the last gold cup we played that Phillip was defective, that’s why he walked away from international football because hart stuck with jan and not him, and even foncette was getting consideration over him in hart’s last days as coach.

the lad is rubbish and dennis should have refused his services, but’s knowing dennis he will persist with the bum goalie.

Honestly, I kind of glad Greg did not save in that game because that results would have tarnished his reputation. There was no way Greg would have or could have save some of  them goals with that display by the defence in front of him.

deeks I’m sort of with you on that but at the same time maybe Greg would have saved those goals like Shaka did in germany. it’s actually a toss up and no one really knows what the out come might have been. then again had we scored first the game would have been a different game and so the out come.

our defense was compromised in that game because they went in search of the equalizer and got caught on the counter, remember most of those goals were against the run of play where defenders were caught teribbly out of position and just maybe a smarter more in tuned goalie would have kept his defenders more organized and in shape, isn’t that the job of a good keeper anyway?

I could only hope that we get a better smarter coach and dead wood like cyrus and Phillips get their marching orders, and by some miracle DJW and dennis lawrence are no where to be found come september.

forgive if I seem stubborn or silly but I just can’t stand marvin Phillip and Daniel cyrus, those guys just do to me every time they feature in a competitive game.

my most regrettable moment in local football was when cyrus walk up to take that penalty vs panama after quite a few players missed on their kicks and all he had to do was put the ball on goal and game over for panama, and the funny thing is, by his body language I knew he was going to blow it. and just as I thought......this idiot kicked the ball in the stands and with no pride or passion just walked away like he had done nothing.

his commitment level is so non existent I can’t understand why he’s still on this team. the lad is plain bad news.

The Greg thing by itself should call for a inquisition. And possibly a head should roll just for that.
However, let look at Cyrus, since He has been available, what does it tell you, when every coach, good, bad and too too, have consistently selected him, not just to bench, but in most cases start. Not withstanding your personal bias. Why do you think that is ?
