Lawrence welcomes test from World Cup bound Panama.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Dennis Lawrence is welcoming the third international friendly to be played in a three week period after the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association secured a match with World Cup bound Panama on April 17th.

The game will be played here at the TTFA Home of Football, Ato Boldon Stadium and will be the first on home soil for the 2018 calendar.

Prior to that, T&T travels to face Guadeloupe on March 23rd and Martinique there on March 25th.

Lawrence is currently overseeing the preparations of a home-based squad and has made one addition to the provisional squad, calling up Under 20 player Judah Garcia.

Regarding the fixture in April against Panama, Lawrence said it would be good test for his squad which is expected to feature home-based players with the match being scheduled outside of the FIFA window.

“We’re obviously delighted to have obtained this fixture against a team that is going to take part in the upcoming World Cup,” Lawrence told TTFA Media.

“This should be a very good test for what is going to most likely be an all local based Trinidad and  Tobago team as the game falls outside the FIFA window. It then gives us the opportunity to keep our footballers active in the meantime with the uncertainty of what’s going to happen with the Pro League and so we are looking forward to welcoming the Panama team to Trinidad next month,” Lawrence added.

Panama has two friendly games scheduled for late March away to Denmark and Switzerland as they prepare for World Cup action.  They are in Group G of the Russia 2018 World Cup and will open their campaign against Belgium on June 18th followed by clashes with England on June 24th and Tunisia four days later.

T&T midfielder Hashim Arcia, who was in the squad for T&T’s 1-0 win over Panama in Port of Spain in World Cup qualifying last year, is also anticipating a decent contest for the hosts on April 17th.

“We are involved in a short training schedule now but it’s been going good. The players are getting fit and coming along well before the upcoming matches. It’s a good experience for me now as a player who has been involved in the World Cup squad last year to be able to pass it onto the new guys in the team now. We have an eager bunch and the guys are putting in a lot of work to get up to good level for the games ahead,” Arcia said.

“These two games are good preparation for us. Martinique are right up there with us in the rankings and also Guadeloupe has been doing well. And then to play against Panama is a really good test for us because they are now one of the top Concacaf teams and they are preparing for the World Cup. I expect them to come here and put on a strong showing which would mean it also being a good challenge for us,” Arcia added.

Warriors book Panama for April friendly in Couva; Judah becomes third Garcia brother to get T&T call-up
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

The Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team will host Panama on 17 April at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, after the rising CONCACAF power agreed to meet the Soca Warriors in a friendly international match.

The fixture falls outside of the FIFA match window so both teams will be under-strength. However, Soca Warriors head coach Dennis Lawrence is happy for what should be a stiff challenge for his charges against a nation that has already booked its place at the Russia 2018 World Cup.

“We’re obviously delighted to have obtained this fixture against a team that is going to take part in the upcoming World Cup,” Lawrence told the TTFA Media. “This should be a very good test for what is going to most likely be an all locally-based Trinidad and Tobago team as the game falls outside the FIFA window.

“It then gives us the opportunity to keep our footballers active in the meantime with the uncertainty of what’s going to happen with the Pro League. And so we are looking forward to welcoming the Panama team to Trinidad next month.”

The Panama affair follows friendly outings away to Guadeloupe and Martinique on 23 and 25 March respectively. The Central Americans will also be the most illustrious team to test Trinidad and Tobago since the 2018 World Cup qualifying series as the Warriors ended the year with exhibition games against Grenada and Guyana, which both ended in draws.

Trinidad and Tobago edged Panama 1-0 on 24 March, 2017 in Lawrence’s first competitive game as head coach but the two nations embarked on wildly differing trajectories after that.

Twenty-nine-year-old Defence Force midfielder Hashim Arcia, who has 12 senior caps with one goal, told the TTFA Media that the players are looking forward to the international tests.

“It’s a good experience for me now, as a player who has been involved in the World Cup squad last year, to be able to pass it onto the new guys in the team now,” said Arcia. “We have an eager bunch and the guys are putting in a lot of work to get up to good level for the games ahead.

“These […] games are good preparation for us… I expect [Panama] to come here and put on a strong showing.”

Lawrence added a second National Under-20 Team player to his rank last week as Shiva Boys Hindu College captain and playmaker Judah Garcia was added to the locally-based training squad.

Garcia, the 2017 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) MVP, joins his fellow Under-20 player and schoolmate Tyrel “Pappy” Emmanuel while the presence of winger Quinn Rodney, a W Connection player, means Shiva Boys have more players in the senior team training squad than 2017 Pro League champions North East Stars.

Garcia (J) joins his older brother, Nathaniel Garcia, in the current team while a third sibling, Netherlands-based Levi Garcia, is also in Lawrence’s player pool.

Trinidad and Tobago have fielded two brothers at the same time before with the likes of Winston and Lincoln “Tiger” Phillips and Alvin and Joevin Jones, among others. However, the three Garcias playing together for the Warriors is likely to be an event without precedent in national football.

Nathaniel and Levi are the last brothers to share the field for Trinidad and Tobago as, on 14 November, 2017, both played for 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Guyana in Couva.

(National Senior Team 18-man local-based training squad)

Goalkeepers: Adrian Foncette (Police FC), Andre Marchan (Defence Force), Marvin Phillip (Point Fortin Civic);

Defenders: Curtis Gonzales (Defence Force), Alvin Jones, Triston Hodge (both W Connection), Kareem Moses (Unattached), Josiah Trimmingham (Club Sando FC);

Midfielders: Tyrel Emmanuel, Judah Garcia (both Shiva Boys Hindu College), Nathaniel Garcia (Point Fortin Civic), Rhondel Gibson (Central FC), Kevon Goddard (W Connection);

Attacking midfielders: Kathon St Hillaire (St Ann’s Rangers), Reon Moore, Hashim Arcia (both Defence Force), Quinn Rodney (W Connection),

Forwards: Akeem Roach (Unattached).

Senior Men focus on Panama friendly
TTFA Media

Following his match winning performance for ‘Ross Russell and friends’ versus the much vaunted i95.95 on Easter Sunday, Head Coach Dennis Lawrence got back to business on Tuesday as preparation for the April 17 friendly international versus Panama continued at the Larry Gomes stadium in Arima.

Lawrence and staff members Stern John, Paul Lawrence and host Russell all featured in the 3-2 win over the ‘radio guys’ with the coach slotting in the winner from a tight angle with two minutes remaining.

They will be hoping that the hunger for victory rubs off on their charges for the upcoming encounter to maintain an unbeaten streak which is now at five matches following back to back friendlies in Guadeloupe and Martinique.

The squad is shaping up to be one dominated by locally based players due to the fact that the match will be played outside the international FIFA window and once again the coach will take the opportunity to look at some new prospects for the senior team.

“We continue to look at all players who we believe can make a contribution at senior level and that’s why you see the likes of Justin Sadoo and Jameel Neptune in the training squad which already includes Rondel Gibson, Kevon Goddard, Judah Garcia Isaiah Hutson and Quinn Rodney to name a few” Lawrence told TTFA Media.

“It is more than likely one or more of these youngsters will feature in the match because we are seeing a lot of positives so far. The game is two weeks away so we still have some evaluation to do.” Lawrence concluded.

For Sadoo the call up is the opportunity of a life time, “This has always been a goal of mine through school, youth pro League and playing with Point Fortin Civic” said the former Naparima College midfielder.

The Cedros resident expressed pride in representing the remote village but lamented the lack of transportation to get to training and playing venues.

“We have a lot of talent in Cedros but transport is a major issue” said Sadoo.

One disturbing issue for Lawrence is the unavailability of Josiah Trimmingham for the immediate future. The big defender suffered a Danis Weber Type B fracture to his left ankle during training on March 31. Following initial examination and treatment by team doctor, Commander Israel Dowlat at the Eric Williams medical complex, it was reported that Trimmingham is expected to be out for approximately 12 weeks following healing and therapy. TTFA Media wish to convey prayer for a speedy recovery on behalf of the players and staff as well as all in football.

Sadoo, Prowell and Hudson among T&T call-ups for Panama friendly; Cunningham continues as press officer
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Point Fortin Civic midfielder Justin Sadoo, W Connection teenager Isaiah Hudson, St Anthony’s College schoolboy Jaydon Prowell and the Central FC duo of Jameel Neptune and Rhondel Gibson were among the new recruits as the Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team prepares for friendly international action against Panama on 17 April at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

The fixture is outside of the FIFA international match window and both nations will be without the bulk of their overseas-based players.

“We continue to look at all players who we believe can make a contribution at senior level,” head coach Dennis Lawrence told TTFA Media. “And that’s why you see the likes of Justin Sadoo and Jameel Neptune in the training squad, which already includes Rhondel Gibson, Kevon Goddard, Judah Garcia, Isaiah Hudson and Quinn Rodney—to name a few.

“[…] It is more than likely one or more of these youngsters will feature in the match because we are seeing a lot of positives so far. The game is two weeks away so we still have some evaluation to do.”

The release was issued by TTFA Board member Wayne Cunningham, who was also listed as the team’s media officer.

On Saturday, TTFA members ordered that Cunningham and WOLF president Sharon O’ Brien must choose between their positions on the Board and employment under the general secretariat. The Constitution says decisions taken at the General Meeting go into effect immediately and general secretary Justin Latapy-George was charged with officially advising Cunningham and O’Brien accordingly.

Today’s team announcement suggests Cunningham has chosen the position of media employee over the role of Board member.

Lawrence promised fresh faces on the field, though. And one of those might be former Naparima College schoolboy Sadoo, who is proud to represent the village of Cedros.

“This has always been a goal of mine through school, Youth Pro League and playing with Point Fortin Civic,” Sadoo told the TTFA Media. “We have a lot of talent in Cedros but transport is a major issue.”

The Soca Warriors have not lost in four friendlies since the 2018 World Cup qualifying series although they have managed just one victory against Guadeloupe. The other results were all draws against Grenada, Guyana and Martinique.

I hope he get a run though. We need some youths on the team. Plus he is the right age for the 2020 Olympic team.  Go to the weight room and strengthen up. He appears to have good skills and ball control. But let us see how that plays out.

Senior Men warm up with win over Prisons FC.
By Wayne Cunningham (TTFA).

The Senior Men’s National team upped its preparation for the April 17 international friendly versus Panama with some welcomed ‘match practice’ on Saturday at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar. Dennis Lawrence and his men took on Prisons FC with Head Coach Anderson Veronique at the helm of the TT Super League outfit.

Both Coaches agreed that the scrimmage will be divided into three 30-minute periods which allowed for better tactical evaluation.

Lawrence told TTFA Media why he opted for Prisons, “I think when I saw them play in the league, for what we were working on, (pressing the ball and trying to keep possession) they were an ideal test because they bring the football up from out of the back well and play organised football.”

That organisation orchestrated by Veronique and his staff caused some caution in the National team’s approach with former Under 20 Captain Duane Muckette pulling the strings in midfield for Prisons in the opening minutes of the first period but the likes of Kathon St. Hillaire, Reon “Re-Re” Moore and Marcus “Lobo” Joseph began to make inroads through their defence and it was a foul in the area on Joseph which resulted in the opening item. The W Connection striker taking the penalty himself to make it 1-0 in favour of the National team.

Ten minutes later Point Fortin Civic midfielder Nathaniel “Spanish” Garcia made 2-0 with a tap in off a service from Moore. St. Hillaire rounded out the scoring after cutting in from the left to beat Javon Bourne with a low rocket at the first post to make it 3-0 after the first 30 minutes.

Wholesale changes were made on both sides for the second period, but Moore was still on the pitch and the Defence Force winger could not be contained as he played a part in many of his team’s raids with three ending in goals for Akeem Roach. The Cocorite resident scoring in the 46th, 55th and 59th minutes.

The National line up for the 3rd period consisted of mostly new call-ups with the likes of Judah Garcia, Justin Sadoo, Rhondel Gibson and Jaydon Prowell all in the mix. Veronique was also looking at his prospects with some managing to get shots on goal but Andre Marchan of the Defence Force also kept the sheet clean for the goalkeepers. The final score was 7-0 in favour of Lawrence’s team with Club Sando’s Jared London getting the last item.

Trinidad and Tobago will face FIFA World Cup bound Panama on April 17 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

Dillon, Cato in T&T squad for Panama friendly.
By Wayne Cunningham (TTFA).

Belgian based Nicholas Dillon has been named on the 24-man squad selected by Head Coach Dennis Lawrence for the April 17 friendly international versus Panama at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. Dillon joined the national team in training on Wednesday and was a welcome edition.

“The team is shaping up nicely and with the addition of Dillon it gives us another huge option in the attack” Lawrence told TTFA Media. “We did not expect many foreign based players to be available for this match as it fall outside the FIFA window, so when we got information on his availability it was an easy decision to have him join the training squad” the coach added.

Dillon will have some familiar faces around him with several his team mates from his days with the National U20 team also making it to the senior ranks. Justin Sadoo, Taryk Sampson and Kathon St. Hillaire all campaigned with Dillon at the 2017 Concacaf Championship in Costa Rica.

The biggest boost to the team will arguably be the additions of Daneil Cyrus and Cordell Cato who also indicated their availability for the match and will be arriving on Sunday. Cyrus with 71 caps will be the most experienced player in the line-up just ahead of goalkeeper Marvin Phillip with 65.

The versatile defender who plays for Juticalpa F.C. of Honduras will be aiming to play his part in maintaining T&T’s international “clean sheet streak” which now stands at four matches. Cato at the other end of the pitch will be eagerly seeking to add to his international goal count while giving the team some pace and trickery in the midfield.

With such an enticing line-up of youth and experience it will interesting to see the starting XI on match day but the aim of the Head Coach is clear, “A good team performance, will bring the result. That’s what I am looking for, a good all-round team performance. We have individuals with a lot of talent, even young Judah Garcia has been impressive in training but against an organised opponent like Panama, team is key” Lawrence concluded.

Trinidad and Tobago will face Panama on Tuesday 17 April at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva from 7:30pm. Gates open at 5:30pm and tickets will be sold at the venue at a cost of $40.00 for Adults and Children Under 16 $20.00.

What has Taryk Sampson done to merit inclusion?

With Lawrence, is not always about merit. Sometimes it looks as though he just want to check out people to see what dey have. For example, he just call up Dillon who is not really doing anything of note in Belgium. I believe he get call up because he young and he happened to be in T&T at this time, unfortunately because his mother recently passed away.

Sorry to hear about that Dillon.
Best I go home with my tugs for the next friendly, I might a sweat ;D

Dillon, Cato, Cyrus to lead Warriors against Panama today.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Assistant national coach Stuart-Charles Fevrier said he is confident the country's senior footballers will give a good account of themselves when they face Panama in an international friendly encounter tonight from 7:30pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva, known as the Home of Football.

Cordell Cato who plays for Charlotte Independence in the USL, Belgian based Nicholas Dillon and defender Daneil Cyrus who represents Juticalpa in the Honduran First Division, are the only international players in the team for the encounter.

At a pre-training interview yesterday Fevrier said the game will be used to assess the performances of the local players who will comprise schoolboy Judah Garcia from Shiva Boys Hindu College.

The W Connection coach said emphasis has been placed on goalscoring since the Soca Warriors have been fairly steady in the other aspects of the game. "Goalscoring will always be the most difficult thing in football since it's the most important. We are constantly working on goalscoring with the players everyday. Stern in particular goes through the paces with the guys at least half an hour after every session. He takes the time to work with them and I am sure that sooner or later it will pay dividends," Fevrier said.

He added, "I am confident that the players will rise to the occasion and improve in that area in coming games."

The hard work of the players during training sessions for the past month, has been satisfying for Fevrier and head coach Dennis Lawrence as they prepare to face a full-strength Panama team which got the edge of the United States to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Russia in June.

Fevrier said the Panamanians will provide a strong unit regardless of which players they use. But he assures however his players will be looking forward to the match, come tonight.

Goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, who will be one of the senior players on the team, said it will be a tough encounter as the Panamanians will be coming to prove to their coach that they are deserving of going to the World Cup. On the part of T&T, the Morvant Caledonia United custodian believes that with the Soca Warriors comprising so many young players, it will be a test for them to prove if they can cope at the international level.

Justin Sadoo, Taryk Sampson and Kathon St. Hillaire, all of whom represented the country at the 2017 Concacaf Under-20 Championship in Costa Rica have now joined the senior ranks with him.

Lawrence said with such an enticing line-up of youth and experience it will interesting to see the starting XI on match day, but he pointed out the aim will be clear, “A good team performance, will bring the result. That’s what I am looking for, a good all-round team performance. We have individuals with a lot of talent, even young Judah Garcia has been impressive in training but against an organised opponent like Panama, team is key” Lawrence said.

Gates open at 5:30pm and tickets will be sold at the venue at a cost of $40.00 adults and $20 for children.

T&T SQUAD:

Hashim Arcia, Cordell Cato, Daneil Cyrus, Nicholas Dillon, Adrian Foncette, Maurice Forde, Judah Garcia, Nathaniel Garcia, Rhondel Gibson, Kevon Goddard, Curtis Gonzales, Triston Hodge, Isaiah Hudson, Alvin Jones, Marcus Joseph, Jared London, Andre Marchan, Reon Moore, Jameel Neptune, Marvin Phillip, Akeem Roach, Justin Sadoo, Taryk Sampson, Kathon St Hillaire

Lawrence hopes for positive result today

DENNIS LAWRENCE, coach of the T&T football team, is looking for a positive result in today’s friendly international against World Cup-bound Panama, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva. The game is slated to begin at 7.30 pm.

Speaking before the start of yesterday’s training session, at the Couva venue, Lawrence commented, “the expectation is the try to continue what we’ve been doing in the last five or six games, which is to keep our defensive stability, make sure we’re well-organised and try to be solid in the back, and then build from there.

“And looking to go forward if we can get a positive result,” he continued. “Ideally a win will be perfect but a positive performance will be pleasing for me.”

T&T will enter today’s game on a five-game unbeaten run, following a 2-1 win over the US at Couva in the last game of their 2018 FIFA World Cup CONCACAF Zone Final Round qualifier (October 10, 2017), drawn results against Grenada (2-2 on November 11) and Guyana (1-1 on November 14), a 1-0 win away to Guadeloupe (March 23) and a goalless draw against Martinique (March 25).

Lawrence has selected a 24-man squad for this game, even though only 18 will be eligible to play in this friendly contest.

“What really happened was we started with this group,” said the T&T coach. “The boys worked so well (and) I thought it’s important to keep them around all the way through.

“They’re all available for selection. I think they all deserve to be here because of their attitude and the commitment they’ve shown throughout the time we were working (towards) this game.”

Three foreign-based players were included – striker Nicholas Dillon (based in Belgium), US-based winger Cordell Cato and central defender Daneil Cyrus.

Lawrence noted, “Dillon has been here for two days because unfortunately he lost his mom. It was a bit difficult for him. (Cyrus and Cato) have got the experience, they’re going to pass it on to the younger ones and, hopefully, they’ll lead the group.”

The T&T-based players have been involved with the national programme for a few months, but Lawrence pointed out, “The immediate horizon is to try and get them active, playing football, to get the Pro League up and running, to make sure the Super League gets going so they’re all training at a football club. They need to stay active.”

As far as the T&T team is concerned, Lawrence said, “Sometimes things happen because teams might be looking for an international friendly (and) you might get a call. At the moment, we’re focused on the next international window which is in September.”

Cyrus joined the squad on Sunday and is eager to get back in the swing of things after being absent from the national scene since the failed 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign.

“It feels good to be back in the team and playing with this group,” said the 27-year-old.

Referring to the new faces, such as midfielders Judah Garcia (Shiva Boys Hindu College) and Justin Sadoo (Naparima College), Cyrus said, “I’m always hearing about them in schools football so it’s good to give the young guys an opportunity. I remember when I was once young (so) it’s an opportunity for them to take it.”

The experienced defender currently plays for Juticalpa in Honduras. According to Cyrus, “footballing-wise, it’s faster than the local league but (there are) plenty guys from the local league who can play in their league comfortably.”

How Panama is said to be planning to start ...

In goal: José Calderón

Central defenders: Chin Hormechea paired with an adapted central defender ... I'm guessing possibly Richard Peralta (who can play on the left flank of a Back Four).

Flank defenders: Francisco Palacios (right flank) and Sergio 'Wiwa' Ortega (left flank)

Central midfield: Leslie Heráldez and Valentín Pimentel

Midfield flanks: Josiel Núñez and Omar Browne

Up top: Carlos 'Caliche' Small and José Fajardo

Player somehow ended up unmarked completely alone on the left side of the penalty area, then with all the time in the world (at 90')  ::) ... picks his cross on an acute angle. Worthy goal under the circumstances.

González scored on his debut.

Strangely, the shirt assignments don't mesh with their own reporting. Chuito González, in FEPAFUT's pre-match publication, was listed as #16. The player wheeling away after scoring was wearing #17 (Núñez).

I was at the game, we played fairly ok, couldve been better. We simply lost the ball wayyy too much and couldn't find a rhythm. Though we did have a couple good cracks at goal. Panama were attacking us a lot more in the 2nd half. We looked tired going into the later part of the game. Take in the experience fellas and build on it.

Panama pip T&T 1-0.
By Inshan Mohammed.

Second half substitute Jesús González scored a 90th minute item for Panama that ended-up being the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory for the visitors at the Ato Boldon Stadium vn Couva, yesterday.

The World Cup bound Panamanians had greater possession of the ball, especially during the last 20 minutes of the match, achieving several offensive plays that could not be capitalized.

It was reported by Wired868 that: "Trinidad and Tobago did not manage a single shot on target for 93 minutes while they could not string together five successive passes in the opposing half either."

Oscar Villarreal provided the assist when he centered the ball for González who made no mistake raffling home on T&T's custodian Adrian Foncette and securing his team's slim victory. González, who made his debut definitely improved his chances on making the Panamanian team for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Panama defeat uninspiring T&T in football friendly.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

PANAMA substitute Jesus Gonzalez capitalised on complacent T&T defending to score in the dying seconds, as the visitors prevailed 1-0 in Tuesday evening’s friendly football international at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

The result ended T&T’s coach Dennis Lawrence’s five-game unbeaten run and highlighted, both to the ex-national defender and the estimated 2,000 fans in attendance, the difficulties he currently faces.

The game was not scheduled on a FIFA international date and both teams fielded players who were either domestic-based or out of season.

Panama are preparing for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and hardly looked troubled by a T&T team who never managed a shot on goal or even had any sustained possession.

With the fans leaving the venue, Panama’s Oscar Villarreal collected a ball inside the penalty box. Unmarked, the midfielder picked out substitute Gonzalez who got in front of T&T goalkeeper Adrian Foncette and slotted home from inside the six-yard box.

Panama’s striker Carlos Small had an early opportunity, when he was sent clear on goal, but his effort was blocked by an advancing Foncette, while T&T midfielder Hashim Arcia (15th minute) and striker Marcus Joseph (40th) had efforts which went high and wide of the Panama net.

Lawrence and his opposite coach Hernan Dario Gomez made a host of substitutions in the second half, but Panama had two good opportunities to find the target.

In the 58th, striker Jose Fajardo met a right-side cross from Alexis Palacio and forced a good save from Foncette while, in the 77th, a shot from outside the penalty box fell to Francisco Palacio who hit wide with only Foncette to beat.

But Gonzalez did not miss when a goal-scoring opportunity fell to him, and sparked wild celebrations from his team-mates and the technical staff.

Lawrence: Young players not ready.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

'Not ready' was how national football coach Dennis Lawrence described his young players' following Tuesday's 1-0 loss to Panama in an international friendly encounter at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva.

The young T&T Warriors held their opponents goalless until the 93rd minute when a defensive blunder by captain Daneil Cyrus on the right side of defence allowed Alexis Palacio to whip in a low cross for Josiel Nunez to turn in past Adrian Foncette, just when the game seemed heading for a tie.

Lawrence's concerns began as early as the first minute of play when Carlos Small was put through an open T&T defence and Foncette, despite his hesitance to charge at him initially, was able to keep out his attempt eventually. Otherwise the local team failed to show progress while possessing the ball and showing an inability to score at the same time.

Lawrence in the post match press conference said a victory was never on the cards for his team, although he didn't feel they deserved to win or lose the match. But he was clear, however, that many questions about the country's young players' readiness for international football were answered, saying they are not technically sound.

Though for most of the young players it was their first attempt at international football, Lawrence said, "It is obvious to see what qualities some of the players can offer and I think some of them have hit their levels, they cannot go the extra bit that is required. But at the same time a lot of them are still young and we have to work with them to improve them from that aspect, but based on the game tonight, some of them are not ready," Lawrence said.

He added, "I cannot see them displacing any of the more senior, foreign players who would come in on a match basis."

Lawrence's concerns Tuesday were numerous and included erratic passing of the ball to lack of concentration, to the inability of players to receive the ball in the middle of the park and either make a progressive pass or be creative. It was this limitation that restricted the home team to just one real chance of at goal in the 10th minute, when Hashim Arcia found room on top the box from Alvin Jones right side centre, but he lifted his shot high and wide of the target.

Other than that the visitors created many scoring opportunities and should have hit the target when Palacio delivered a pin-point cross to Jose Fahardo inside the area, but his header was somehow scrambled wide by the outstretched arms of Foncette in the 58th.

Later Francisco Palacio benefited from a goal-mouth scrimmage when the ball bounced invitingly for him in the 77th minute, but he fired wide, with the goal at his mercy. Lawrence's search to find players to fit into his structure only further weakened his team in the final 15 minutes expectedly, with the Panamanians relentless in their attacks.

The lanky national coach promised he will continue to develop players as his job demands, but he echoed another troubling concern which is to keep the young players active with the T&T Pro League still in doubt.

T&T players need to improve.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

Coach Lawrence disappointed by late 1-0 loss to Panama

DENNIS LAWRENCE, T&T football team coach, expressed his disappointment with the squad’s 1-0 loss against Panama, in a friendly football international at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

And the ex-national central defender also highlighted the need for immediate improvement from the mostly local-based T&T players.

Jesus Gonzalez scored in the second minute of second-half stoppage time to ensure victory for the Panamanians.

The Central Americans fielded an entire local-based team, as they prepare for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, starting on June 14.

At Tuesday’s post-game media conference, Lawrence said, “Did we deserve to win the game, I don’t think so. Did we deserve to lose the game, I don’t think so either. All and all I think a lot of questions (were) answered in terms of the local players, where they are at the moment.

“Some of our passing was very erratic, and I think we can all see where the work needs to be done with the local players, when we come up against good opposition,” he continued. “For a lot of the people who were asking about who should be in the team, I think we got the answers. I wasn’t pleased with the performance.”

Centre-back Daneil Cyrus, who wore the captain’s armband for the first time, winger Cordell Cato and substitute striker Nicholas Dillon, in his first international, were the only foreign-based players selected by Lawrence.

Lawrence admitted, “You can see what qualities that some of the (local) players can offer us and I think some of them have hit their levels, they can’t go the extra bit that is required. But, at the same time, a lot of them are still young and we have to work with them, to try and improve them.”

Referring to Gonzalez’s winner, Lawrence said, “The goal we conceded came from an error by a senior player. It just shows that football, sometimes, is all about concentration ...”

Lawrence was asked about the lack of quality, both in terms of the midfield and forward departments.

On the midfield issue, he noted, “It was a clear concern because in the middle of the park, we did not have that ambition to try (to) receive the ball and create things.”

About the strikers, Lawrence said, “It will be great if we have a young Stern John now because, for all the criticism he took over the years, his record (a T&T-leading 70 international goals) still stands. ”

Carlon Hughes, of Super League champions Guaya United, was the leading scorer for the 2017 season with 30 goals. But Lawrence spoke about the gap between the Super League and international football.

Referring to the inclusion of FC Santa Rosa striker Keron Clarke for the July 26, 2017 friendly away to Ecuador (T&T lost 3-1), Lawrence noted, “He said to me ‘after 20 minutes I could have easily asked to come off the football pitch’. That was how big the guy found it.

“It is not easy for a football player that does not train consistently to come in and play at this level. I’ve seen the player and I think, at this time, it’s not what we need.”

Lawrence also made a plea for top-flight domestic football to resume as soon as possible.

“At the moment we don’t have any leagues apart from minor leagues,” he said.

“As much as I’m against a player playing in the minor leagues, luckily enough some of them were playing in the minor leagues to keep themselves active. My major concern is the lack of activity by our footballers.”

Lawrence also touched on two new players, winger Reon Moore (in his second international) and debutant central midfielder Kevon Goddard.

“Moore’s problem wasn’t the position he played in,” said the T&T coach.

“There were problems in terms of his technical ability, his understanding and his work ethic.”

About Goddard, Lawrence noted, “He’ll give you everything, he’s a heart-and-soul player but he just lacked a bit of ambition, to be brave on the ball going forward.”

Would love to see the match sheet. Even Caston Cupid's reporting points to Nunez wearing the #17 shirt, although we now know that he was not.

Tell him come Tobago and get Lashawn Roberts (http://www.socawarriors.net/tfa-league/20728-roberts-tfa-s-player-of-the-year.html)... I'll say no more!

Yea Doc, I heard good things about Lashawn Roberts.

He young and scored real goals in a big man league.

Good target striker.

I agree that they need more games. Let them play a couple games against, Lucia, Vincy, Greneda. Probably teams they can handle at this moment. I know some may no agree. But TTFA can't get any other of the so-called big team at all. We have to think outside the box to get them ready. Doh just give up on the youth. Prepare them for the up coming CAC and Panam games. Then we will really see if they ready for Olympics

FINAL: Trinidad and Tobago 0-1 Panama. Goal scored by Jesús 'Chuito' González in the 90th minute.

Looks like the T&T defenders fell asleep a bit near the end to have conceded in the 90th minute.

Player somehow ended up unmarked completely alone on the left side of the penalty area, then with all the time in the world (at 90')  ::) ... picks his cross on an acute angle. Worthy goal under the circumstances.
It looked like #15 Gonzales bite/took the risk to intercept a pass that was going wide to the left side. With him beaten, the Panamanian had lots of free space and time to play the perfect pass for the goal. Not much Cyrus or Foncette could've done then.
I hope the players can learn from this but this is where game management and experience comes in. It's the 90th min, we may not be able to win but we shouldn't lose. Don't "dive in" to try and win that pass, instead let it go wide and guide the player to the corner if possible. The risk is not worth it at that point of the game, just my opinion. Not blaming them but it can be a valuable lesson going forward.

Yuh eh lie. Up until a couple hours ago I had seen only the view from behind the goal.

Gonzales was in a poor starting position to begin with. In general, our defense was what in Spanish they call "mal parada" but the situation was resolvable despite the intelligent ball from Panama's midfield. (Looks like the pass was made from the outside of the boot. That also played a role in the player's lunge missing the ball).

At the end of the day, there is no coincidence that we suffer these 90'+ situations time and time again.

Ah still feel Foncette should have done better.

The RB missed the interception   ... 50/50 as far as I can see. But Cyrus was the culprit. His intensity was down and the opponent pounced on it while he was "daydreaming" or expecting Foncette to collect. But this is what practice games are all about. Schedule some more games against caribbean opponents. The only person from outside who should be invite should be the gk guy, Greg. The rest should be young locals. Now the local players, especially the young ones, if they really serious, should take it upon themselves to work on their stamina and some physical(weight room). Some when next they are called by DL, he would not have to bemoan that the locals eh ready yet.

if I had a dollar for every time Cyrus just stood there in the keepers way instead of looking for able bodies to mark I would be rich. does he even watch world class leagues to see how other defenders play with intensity? I’m telling you that Roman torres would have never stood there and stared but would have rush the player with the ball even throwing his body in the process trying to stop the ball from getting into the six yard box.

i remember John terry when stern John had a chance to score in the world cup with pure intensity doing All he can with an acrobatic scissor kick clearing the ball off the line, if that was any of our defenders that would have been goal long time. we really need a whole new back line goal keeper included, and Gonzales should have timed that ball better, that is inexcusable at this level, terribly inexcusable.

The HORRIFIC thing about the goal is this: the goalscorer makes the pass "out wide" and then runs all the way up the field to tap the ball in the net.

I would say ... it's too easy to say Cyrus is the culprit. If you're Cyrus, you're thinking the GK has that ball. He had more than enough reason to think that was Foncette's ball.

Aside from the error by Curtis Gonzales, there is a player who left work on the field. Nathaniel Garcia #20 could have and should have fixed #17's run. Watch the video again.

At the end of the day, it's a collective failure ... but individual players more than the easily recognizable scapegoats are also at fault. When Cyrus made his decision on how he was going to address the situation, there was no attacker around for miles. What a difference a fraction of a second makes.

I like the dialogue and the opinion's of posters on the goal thus far. That's true seeker #20 should've put in more of an effort to cover the goal scorer and make him have to 1) fight for space to get to the ball (not just stroll down the middle freely) or 2) change direction with his run. After Gonzales missed the ball it placed Cyrus between a rock and a hard place. He was probably thinking that if he go towards the player with the ball, he can make the pass behind him before he can close him down, split second decision. At the end of the day we made it too easy for them to score on that build up, we had more numbers on transition and they still executed, we need to tighten things up.

Commendable effort by young Soca Warriors.
By Alvin Corneal (Guardian).

T&T coach Dennis Lawrence have expressed his concerns that the local players he fielded on Tuesday night were not ready for this level, but I'm sure despite that he was satisfied with the results for which the game's only goal came in the 93rd minute of play during his team's encounter against the World Cup bound qualifier Panama.

It was not only because of the ninety minutes which the selected squad was based mainly on experienced players such as Daniel Cyrus, Curtis Gonzales, Triston Hodge, Alvin Jones and Marcus Joseph. Admittedly, it was easy to see that the Panamanians were starting without a number of their already proven players.

Regardless of the absence of the matured players, the game brought to the fore some exciting moves, especially in the first half.

Admittedly, both teams started to allow each other to play without challenge while in possession in their own portion of the field. The ploy allowed the clustering of players utilising thirty metres on either side of the centreline.

The results was that the possession of the ball changed hands regularly and the number of tough tackles were seen more often than a normal game.

The speed of the Panama was easily recognised as soon as they received the ball, their key attackers took the initiative by running at the Warriors and mixed in with some skills and quick passing. The response by the Cyrus, Gonzales, Jones and Hodge in defence was filled with some timely tackles and quick efforts of counter attacks.

The ball distribution of Cyrus and Gonzales down the field was effective in reaching behind the backs of the Panama defence, but the speed of Cordell Cato, Nathaniel Garcia and Joseph was insufficient to create goal scoring chances.

A similar attacking style was evident when Panama got its chance to move forward, except that they possessed some skilful players with much faster than average speed.

The second half showed us the shortage on physical condition of the home team and because of that keeper Adrian Foncette had a difficult time. Fortunately for the Warriors, the opponents were poor in their finishing, although they created goalscoring some six times in the game.

It was clear that Coach Lawrence decided to give some exposure to some young players out of the secondary school programme. Insufficient time on the field and possibly a more advanced group caused them to expose their lack of readiness for the international game.

Some may have thought that a few of the more experienced Pro League players may well have brought more out of the opposition.

However, there was no period of the match which exposed a huge difference between the two teams and Panama can well be made aware that their journey to Russia is still short of the organisation, the high percentage of passes and any vision of planned attacks which will create concern for the teams in Russia in two months time.
