Good friendly. Well done, Dennis. And, a great way to both appease Wrexham and keep things positive on multiple fronts.

Yes this should certainly be a good test for T&T in March.

Just hope Dennis pick the right players. The team needs to play more friendlies.

Trinidad and Tobago to face Wales in Wrexham
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men’s Team will step up their preparations for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup with an international friendly against Wales at the Racecourse Ground in Wales, home venue of Wrexham AFC, on March 20th, 2019.

The fixture has been confirmed for the venue which will mark a special return for Trinidad and Tobago head coach Dennis Lawrence who played there for Wrexham between 2001-2006.

T&T have met Wales once before in the build up to the 2006 World Cup, losing 2-1 at Graz , Austria in May of that year. Lawrence played in that encounter in which current assistant coach Stern John netted for the Leo Beenhakker-coached team to open the scoring on 32 minutes. Gareth Bale also marked his debut as Wales’ youngest international by setting up their late winner.

“We are delighted to have this opportunity to face Wales in the next international window in March. The match comes at an ideal time for us which is just over a couple months before the CONCACAF Gold Cup and will obviously be a very good test for our team. Wales have shown themselves to be a formidable opponent with good quality players under the management of  Ryan Giggs and I expect the return of the Wales national team to Racecourse Ground to be special and both teams will be aiming to put on a competitive contest,” Lawrence told TTFA Media.

This will be the first game of 2019 for Ryan Giggs’ side, in preparation for their first EURO 2020 qualifying match against Slovakia 4 days later in Cardiff.

Ryan Giggs, the national team manager, is looking forward to returning to the Racecourse:
“I’m delighted that we’re able to play at the Racecourse for the first time in 10 years. We thoroughly enjoyed taking the team there for an open training session in May. The support was incredible and further fuelled our ambition to host a match at the historic ground. Trinidad & Tobago will prove an interesting test for us and will be great preparation ahead of the EURO 2020 qualifying campaign,” Giggs said.

There is no under 23 either, they use the under 21 as a feeder team to the national team but I get what you mean. Still I doubt it will happen for all types of reasons.

Soca Warriors vow to boycott Wales match due to unkept DJW promises; still unpaid for USA win in October 2017.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Trinidad and Tobago’s National Senior Team players have had enough of alleged broken promises by Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president David John-Williams and will not play against Wales next March unless all debts are wiped off.

At present—according to four senior players who spoke on condition of anonymity—the TTFA owes players and staff a combined TT$707,000 with the largest single payment due to a player believed to be TT$24,000.

Remarkably, the Soca Warriors still have not been paid for their 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over the United States in Couva on 10 October 2017—a result which won global attention and remains the biggest triumph of the DJW-led TTFA administration to date.

The players—who all have over 30 international caps and represented Trinidad and Tobago for over a decade, counting national youth duty—believe they have shown good faith and patience to John-Williams and have only been met with discourtesy and dishonesty in return. Now, they want the public to know the extent of their discomfort.

“The players are just fed up,” said one anonymous player. “It’s over a year now we are just running on promises; and players are leaving their families and travelling far distances because we love our football and we can’t take it anymore.

“It is just one person who is doing this to us. He is always going back on his promises.”

Another accused John-Williams of playing politics with the players by offering false promises to keep them silent until after the TTFA AGM, at which he faced a motion for his dismissal.

In September, John-Williams offered to pay up all his debts on 30 November, which was a week after the AGM. However, when the AGM was reconvened for 9 December, he again shifted the date for his payment to the players.

Once FC Santa Rosa’s motion to remove John-Williams was defeated, however, the football president reneged again on 14 December and didn’t even bother to offer a new deadline. Four days later, the players have decided to air their dirty laundry in public.

“On December 1, we had a chat with the coach [Dennis Lawrence] and manager [Richard Piper] and told them that we were going to the press,” said the second player. “And the president called all of us personally and said we would be paid all our money within 14 days. So we all agreed to give him more time; but now when we’re calling him, we can’t even get a response.

“So now we think the whole thing was just a plot to keep us quiet until after the AGM.”

The issue of unpaid debts and John-Williams’ supposedly bullish attitude to employees has been an oft-repeated criticism from technical directors Kendall Walkes and Anton Corneal to National Under-20 coach Russell Latapy and many in-between.

Last month, Primary School coaches complained that they were unpaid for six months of service to the TTFA; although, according to a well-informed source, the title sponsor for the programme, Nu-Iron, has already paid the local football body in full for not only 2018 but 2019 as well.

At present, the Soca Warriors are owed match fees for outings against Mexico (6 October 2017), USA (10 October 2017), Grenada (11 November 2017), United Arab Emirates (6 September 2018), Thailand (14 October 2018) and Iran (15 November 2018).

The players are due US$1,500 for their win over USA and US$1,000 for their loss away to Mexico; all the other games are valued at US$300 each.

The national players initially agreed a deal for US$1,500 for each game in the Concacaf Hex with an additional US$1,000 per win and US$500 per draw. However, according to a third player, then team captain Kenwyne Jones and vice-captain Jan-Michael Williams accepted a suggestion from John-Williams that they drop their fees as soon as the team was out of contention for qualifying.

This concession from the players meant the value of their win over USA—in direct financial terms—was slashed by nearly half from US$2,500 to US$1,500.

“The players were always willing to try and find a solution because we understand the [financial] situation,” said the third player. “But when you agree to play for less money and you’re still not getting your money, players will obviously become unsettled.”

John-Williams did not respond to a request for comments from Wired868 on his debt to the national players and what his administration was doing to address it. However, during the day, the players said the TTFA president sent word that he would offer them match fees for two of the friendly games at US$300 each.

Unanimously, the players told Wired868 they rejected the offer and would only accept full payment now. The second player said he now doubts even the sincerity of such approaches from John-Williams.

“He probably only offered to pay for those [two] games so that, if anything comes out in the press, he can say it was us who rejected him,” said the anonymous player. “It is always games with him. We know for sure that the TTFA got appearance fees for our games against UAE, Thailand and Iran. So what did they do with that money?

“Why didn’t they pay us?”

The issue of the US$300 match fee for friendlies is one that divides even the playing squad.

The third player revealed that when the Warriors were offered US$300 to play against Grenada and Guyana in November 2017, ace midfielder Kevin Molino immediately said to count him out.

“Molino went to Dennis [Lawrence] and said he is not playing for US$300,” said the third player. “And Dennis said okay he respects that, and he will tell the media that Molino was injured [for the friendly against Guyana on 14 November].

“So we made a decision not to embarrass the TTFA then.”

John-Williams met the squad on the issue that same month. The players said that, going forward, they would not play for less than US$800—which was still below the US$1,000 mark that national players generally received for international friendlies since the turn of the millennium.

The football president, according to the third player, vowed to raise the fee to US$500 while he would bump it up to US$800 as soon as the financial health of the local football body improved.

Instead, John-Williams allegedly went back on his word by their next international engagement as the promised fee remained US$300. And, after three outings against Guadeloupe, Martinique and Panama, suddenly the players were receiving nothing at all—as they would wait for TTFA payments to hit their accounts, only to be left disappointed.

The situation was exacerbated, over a month ago, when John-Williams appeared on a TV6 programme and told the host that he convinced the Warriors to play for just US$300.

“When [John-Williams] jumped out and boasted that he can ‘proudly say’ his players are playing for US$300,” said the second player, “we were so angry about that…”

The first player swore that, due to John-Williams’ behaviour, he is now unwilling to ever play for US$300 or even US$500 again.

“All the time the standard price was US$1,000 under [former TTFA president Raymond] Tim Kee and just so he want to change it and still he is not paying us,” said the first players. “And for him to go on tv and boast about paying us that; I will never come to play for that again!

“And I am playing away but think about the local players who have to pay for their own gas to attend training and the TTFA doesn’t even provide meals. And all that for US$300 that you’re not even sure to get.

“[…] If my club asks me how much we play for, I wouldn’t even be able to tell them. I would be too embarrassed.

“If my plane is delayed and I have to change flights or something, that US$300 won’t even cover that.”

A fourth player revealed that, for their last trips away to Thailand and Iran, some of the foreign-based players had to dip in their own pockets so that the younger Pro League players could even get something to eat at the airport.

“Some of us were having a meal and we noticed that one player (name called) was just outside sitting down and not doing anything,” said the fourth player. “So when we called him to talk, we found out that he had no money for the trip. You’re talking about players travelling for 14 hours by six hours and they can’t even afford to get something to eat.

“[…] We just can’t take this anymore. If we don’t get our money, we are not playing!”

The non-payment of match fees, according to the third anonymous player, was just one of several perceived slights that Soca Warriors players endure at present. He said a shortage of ‘hotel wear’—which they are mandated to wear for meals and meetings—and travelling gear was another sore point.

“Most times, they give us one jersey and one pants to wear for the whole camp as hotel wear and obviously it gets a scent after a while,” he said. “We are asked to turn up at breakfast and everything else with that one tee-shirt.

“For the Iran game, we were not even given any travelling clothes so we had to use one of the game uniforms instead. We feel like a minor league team!

“[…] As far as the senior guys are concerned, it is a disrespect to ask us to make these kind of sacrifices. Normally with an international break, we would get three or four days off, which is time we can spend with our families. Instead, we fly all over the world to play for our National Team and this is the kind of thing we have to put up with.”

All the players who spoke to Wired868 said they were accustomed to being owed by the TTFA and having to put up with the occasional shabby treatment, but they suggested that John-Williams was worse than his predecessors because of his attitude.

“It is worse now than before,” said the second player. “Tim Kee didn’t always have the funds but he would always talk to you and try to sort out things for us. Under John-Williams, it seems like he just doesn’t care.”

The first player, who is a former W Connection employee, blamed John-Williams for the demise of all the national teams as well as for forcing out former coach Stephen Hart.

“From the beginning [of his term as president] there was never a time when Coach Hart wasn’t under pressure,” he said, “and there was a time when ‘Pressie’ was [allegedly] telling him who to pick. I know of one player (name called) for sure who he pressured Hart to pick.

“[…] Since ‘Pressie’ come in, everything is going bad with the senior team, the girls team, the youth teams, etc. And he is getting too comfortable with giving us this kind of bad treatment.”

The fourth player moaned about John-Williams’ supposed focus on his controversial Home of Football project at the expense of everything else.

“I understand he wants to build this Home of Football but he is bypassing all these current problems and issues to fix that instead,” he said. “He is showing us that he doesn’t care. When we told him we will go the media, he told us it doesn’t matter and it wouldn’t solve anything as we will still have the same problem after.

“The president has no respect for his players. Some of us have 80 caps and anywhere else in the world, a player with that number of caps would at least get some respect from his federation. But not in Trinidad.”

So where does head coach Dennis Lawrence—who supposedly turned down an offer from England National League club Wrexham AFC to stay with the Warriors—stand in the impasse between players and the president?

The third player suggested Lawrence and manager Richard Piper have been professional and sympathetic, although he suggested that not all players are convinced.

“Some players see it as he is on the side of the TTFA but I think he is on both sides, in terms of trying to find a solution,” he said. “I think he really tries to help the players and I will continue to give 100 per cent for Dennis.

“It is hard for him because John-Williams will tell him something and he will relay that to us; and then ‘Pressie’ would up and do something else and leave him and Piper in a shit position.”

The players claimed they have had enough now and said their position is mirrored by their teammates who they speak to regularly via What’s App.

“Since ‘Pressie’ came in, it is just a whole set of run around and we never showed him up,” said the first player. “I think this is the right time to let everyone know what is happening. Next year is an important one for us with the Gold Cup and the Nations League; and we want to go into it with the right frame of mind.

“We want to go into the New Year stress free.”

Bateau: We must be ready for Wales test
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago European-based defender Sheldon Bateau is challenging his teammates to be in their best shape for the upcoming International Friendly against Wales on March 20th at the Racecourse in Wrexham.

Bateau who penned a one-year deal with Norway top flight club Sarpsborg 08 FF this week, indicated his next line of focus will be the upcoming clash with the Welsh outfit led by head coach, former Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.

“To my teammates, all I can say is be ready for this. Some of them are still into season which is a good thing. The other ones like myself are in preseason and there are some who haven’t started for whatever reason. This is a game that could change your life, it can change your career,” Bateau said in an interview with TTFA Media.

“It’s a very good opportunity for us as players. We should set a goal to do well in this game and accept the challenge. And not only accept the challenge but to compete and get a result. I think everyone should be really motivated for this game because I am and am sure the other players are as well. We just need to continue working as a team. We haven’t played together for a while but that is minor because to me, once every player prepared and ready to do the work and understand their roles, I believe we can get a good result in this game,” Bateau added.

Wales’ last win was a 1-0 victory over Republic of Ireland in October while they lost their last encounter 1-0 in a friendly to Albania in November. They will play Slovakia in a Euro 2020 qualifier four days after facing T&T.

“For me this game is the big target right because my season is starting at the end of March. It’s the only thing on my mind right now after having signed with a new team,” Bateau added. ” It’s a new challenge but at the same time international football is a different feeling and level so my focus is to be ready for the game against Wales.”

“This is a huge challenge and is one we shall welcome as a country to play against a team have world class players apart from Gareth Bale. It will be a good challenge to see where we are at and how much work we need to put in before the Gold Cup. We all know what Wales is capable of and i think we as players should be up for the game. As players, you live for games like this. It will definitely be a tough game but I think we will be ready in time for it,” said the former San Juan Jabloteh player.

T&T head coach Dennis Lawrence is expected to announce his squad around the second week of March while Giggs is slated to announce the Wales roster around March 12th.

Interesting, and no report. Does that include women as well? What about TD?  Where did funds surface from, does Board know? Is there more to pay up coming Sheldon Phillips? Maybe I missed some post, but is the TTFA now operating like it should, with a new influx of monies?

Thanks Tman, 1st sentence covered. Now if we can get some answers to the questions, we can be truly informed. Some might say it’s not our business, but that depends on the source of funds.

Statistics can be misleading but, under Giggs, Wales have lost five of nine games. “If we’d have beaten Albania, I would have called it a successful year,” Giggs says. “But we played Spain, Uruguay, Mexico. Denmark twice. Almost all in the world’s top 10. We used experimental squads, experimental systems. So we’ve used this first year to see what we’ve got while looking forward to the Euros. Against Albania we actually played really well first half. We should have won 3-0 but missed easy chances. Then they get a penalty which may not have been one. But sometimes you learn a lot more from defeats.”

A crunch period is looming. On 24 March Wales face Slovakia in Cardiff. It is their opening match in a qualifying group that includes the World Cup finalists Croatia as well as Hungary, Belarus and Azerbaijan. “We need a good start against our main rivals because, after Croatia, I would say it could be between us and Slovakia. They have a new manager but they’ve got talented players. Marek Hamsik stands out. He just broke the goalscoring record for Napoli, overtaking Diego Maradona. So this first game against Slovakia is a big one.”

Cyrus eyes battle with Bale in Wales friendly
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s Saudi Arabia-based defender Daneil Cyrus is taking up the challenge from teammate Sheldon Bateau and has pledged to be in tiptop shape for the upcoming international friendly against Wales on March 20th at the Racecourse in Wrexham.

With Gareth Bale likely to be leading the Welsh attach as they prepare for a Euro 202o qualifier against Slovakia, Cyrus will have to be in prime condition as he squares off against one of the leading forwards in the game today.

“The game is against Wales is a big test for most of the players especially some of the younger guys in the group. Right now I am anxious and just trying to keep fit and focused for this one,” Cyrus told TTFA Media on Sunday,

“To face Bale is a massive test for me as a centreback and a defender because we all know Bale is a world class player. It’s a great opportunity for us to go out and show that we can compete. We will go into the game without any fear although we will show them respect. We respect Wales and some of their players but we will not allow ourselves to be intimidated,” Cyrus added.

“Football is on the day and we are working towards going out and giving a good show. It’s just for us to enjoy the game and enjoy the moment knowing that we will be coming up against world class players. I’m really excited for the match especially knowing we will be playing at a venue where former players like Carlos Edwards, the current coach (Dennis) Lawrence and others have graced during their careers,” Cyrus said.

Meantime, Wales head coach Ryan Giggs revealed on the weekend that he had a debrief with some players in London ahead of their preparations for the Euro qualifier in March which includes the warm up against T&T.

Last September, in his first home game, Wales produced a vibrant display of the attacking football Giggs epitomised as a player. They swaggered past the Republic of Ireland, winning 4-1 in an exhilarating and clinical performance. Yet, in their most recent match, Wales lost to Albania, 42 places below them in the world rankings. Unlike a club manager Giggs has had to reflect on that loss for nearly three months.

“It is difficult having such a long break. That’s the tough part about international football. But I keep in contact with the players and yesterday I got the lads together for a little debrief in London and to make sure we’re looking forward to the [Euro 2020]qualifiers in March,” Giggs told the Irish Times on Monday. “When it’s September, October, November, you’re on a roll. But this gap between games is big. You can see why some managers miss that day-to-day contact. The difference is that I was never a [permanent]club manager. I’ve gone straight into international football.

Wales’ clash with Slovakia is their opening match in a qualifying group that includes the World Cup finalists Croatia as well as Hungary, Belarus and Azerbaijan. “We need a good start against our main rivals because, after Croatia, I would say it could be between us and Slovakia. They have a new manager but they’ve got talented players. Marek Hamsik stands out. He just broke the goalscoring record for Napoli, overtaking Diego Maradona. So this first game against Slovakia is a big one,” Giggs added.

Soca Warriors paid in full and ready to face Wales; but players urge DJW to raise match fees.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

The Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Senior Team players are finally paid in full and anxious to turn their attention to next month’s international friendly against Wales. However, there is still the matter of a match fee to be negotiated.

The Soca Warriors received a standard match fee of US$1,000 for friendly internationals since before the turn of the century. But Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president David John-Williams subsequently cut the players’ rate by more than 60 per cent, as he offered just US$300 for matches in 2018.

One international player, who spoke to Wired868 on condition of anonymity, said the Warriors were happy to represent their country and look forward to the challenge posed by Wales. But there is no consensus yet as to whether all the players are willing to play for US$300.

The player insisted that he and his colleagues showed good faith to the TTFA in the past but they now need John-Williams to reciprocate.

“It is a good game for us but I hope he doesn’t keep [our match fees] at US$300,” said the anonymous Warriors player. “I’m hoping he would at least try to meet the players halfway so we could have the best possible squad.

“As far as I know, the players are still waiting to negotiate; but I don’t think players will accept US$300 anymore, especially for such a big game.”

Wales are ranked 19th in the world by FIFA and boast of world class players like Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale and Juventus-bound midfielder Aaron Ramsey in their ranks, while they are coached by former Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.

In contrast, Trinidad and Tobago are ranked 93rd by FIFA and the Warriors head coach cannot be certain of having his top attacking player, Minnesota United midfielder Kevin Molino, at the current US$300 rate. At least two international players suggested they would follow Molino’s example if John-Williams does not raise their match fees.

There is an element of uncertainty about which coach will be leading out the Warriors next month as well.

A TTFA media release suggested that incumbent Dennis Lawrence will lead the squad out at the Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground in Wales next month. Lawrence, a former World Cup 2006 stand-out, is a Hall of Fame inductee at Wrexham alongside compatriot Carlos Edwards.

However, Lawrence is out of contract since 31 January and, although John-Williams indicated that he wanted the lanky rookie to remain as head coach, the board is yet to make a determination.

The TTFA board meets next Wednesday and the question of the head coaching void is one of several points raised for discussion by Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) president and TTFA board member Keith Look Loy.

One player who made no secret about his excitement over the upcoming friendly is defender Sheldon Bateau, who signed a one-year deal with Norway top flight club Sarpsborg 08 FF this week.

“This is a game that could change your life, it can change your career,” Bateau told the TTFA Media. “It’s a very good opportunity for us as players. We should set a goal to do well in this game and accept the challenge; and not only accept the challenge but compete and get a result.

“I think everyone should be really motivated for this game because I am and am sure the other players are as well.”

Bateau has not played competitive football since 2018 while the Norwegian professional season does not get underway until late March. But he says he will be ready for the Welsh test and believe his teammates will be as well.

Trinidad and Tobago are preparing for the June 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup while Wales play Slovakia in a Euro 2020 qualifier, four days after facing the Warriors.

“For me this game is […] the only thing on my mind right now, after having signed with a new team,” said Bateau. “[…] This is a huge challenge and is one we shall welcome as a country to play against a team that has world class players apart from Gareth Bale. It will be a good challenge to see where we are at and how much work we need to put in before the Gold Cup.

“[…] As players, you live for games like this. It will definitely be a tough game but I think we will be ready in time for it.”

Senior Team commences preparations for Wales friendly.
TTFA Media.

A Trinidad and Tobago senior men’s provisional squad took the field at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Thursday morning as preparations commenced for this country’s international friendly against Wales on March 20th in Wrexham.

Head coach Dennis Lawrence led his players and members of staff out after the TTFA board approved a two and half year extension to Lawrence’s contract as head coach of the Men’s Senior Team on Wednesday evening at a board meeting at the FA’s headquarters in Couva. This extension will see Lawrence through in his position as head coach to beyond the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Concacaf Nations League and into the qualification for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers for Qatar.

Lawrence will name his final squad for the Wales encounter closer to matchday but will work with the current bunch of players at daily sessions for the next two weeks.

Goalkeeper Marvin Phillip who was involved in Thursday’s session spoke about the resumption of the training and Lawrence’s extension, saying it was welcomed news for the team.

“It’s great that he will continue as head coach. He already has his plans set out and he has done a good job thus far. He has already familiarised himself with the players and they respect him and will go all out for him,” Phillip told TTFA Media after training on Thursday.

“It is always an honour to be with the national team preparing for a game of this nature. This morning was a bit tough for the local players who have been out of the game since December. It’s not going to be easy but we are up to the task,” he continued.

Looking towards the Wales clash, he added, “This game is a massive one for our country. Wales is ranked highly on the world rankings. We have to accept the challenge and show up for that game on the 20th. The players have to dig deep for it as well as in their personal time in the lead up to the match,” he said.

Phillip is also looking to seal a place in the team for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup in June.

“A lot of players will be tussling and jostling for selection for the Gold Cup and this game will be very good preparation for it. The Gold Cup for me is the next best thing after the World Cup for us as a country. I think we have what it takes to win the Gold Cup. Jamaica has reached the final two times before and if we just dig deep as country I think we can reach the final also and go on to win it,” Phillip stated.

The members of the squad were also given a first hand tour of the TTFA Home of Football Accommodation hotel on Thursday following the training session with TTFA President David John-Williams proudly leading the walk through as Phillip and company saw some of the rooms that will bring about a sense of awe with amenities and touches guests will rave about.

They also observed one of the training pitches that is located mere metres away from the hotel which is ideal for team preparations. John-Williams announced to the players that the facility should be ready to accommodate them in residential training camps by April of this year.

Alvin Corneal invited by Lawrence to address Senior Team players
TTFA Media

Dennis Lawrence invited and welcomed former national team player and coach Alvin Corneal to address members of the current Senior Men’s provisional training squad at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Tuesday. Lawrence’s intention was to have Corneal, one of the past greats of T&T’s football come in and speak to the players to share his wisdom and life knowledge gained through the game, reinforcing certain personal characteristics, responsibility, persistence, self-discipline, teamwork and representing the Red,White and Black.

“I feel so good to be able to talk to you guys in a way which I hope they would understand,” Corneal said.
“One of the greater features that I have experienced at this point in time is that I looked at the work that has been done by Dennis since he has been here and he has been able to transform a few, he’s been able  to get an attitude out of some and he has been able to do some things that have been absent from our game for a long time.

“Being naturally talented is excellent but being a good player is a commitment,” Corneal told the players.

“Playing football is no longer just a game, it is a business, it is a commitment and a commitment not only to you but to your country. This game is a team game. This game is not about how I can dribble or shoot but how can I make the rest of the team develop. You have got the start thinking about the other persons and how they are thinking. We are all different in our thoughts. The personalities may be different between what you do here with Dennis and then when you go back to your clubs. You have to got to utilise your understanding to benefit from his work as oppose to also benefiting from the other’s work.

“I have learnt that there is nothing you can do as an individual that will win a game alone and there is nothing that you should do if one of your players makes a mistake on the field because he is a human being. Those things can reduce the support within the team,” Corneal said.

I honestly believe that we have some really natural footballers. How do you utilise it in the contest of the whole picture?” he asked.

“There are not too many teams in the world who pay an emphasis on winning the ball. Maybe they have a different philosophy. You have got to get that ball otherwise you can’t win, you can’t play if you don’t have the ball. This is one of the teams that I’ve seen where you guys give the impression that you are probably as capable as anyone I’ve seen.

The former Trinidad and Tobago cricketer and member of FIFA Technical Study Group emphasized on the importance of teamwork in order to attain success at the highest level.

“This is the only game in the world as far as I am concerned that you must work with each other, you must think for each other, You must listen to the coach as often as you can. Let me get into the act of doing things that you (Lawrence) want done. He has done a good job of it so far. We have got to understand it guys that yes you want to make the team but you also want to the team with the quality of being part of that team. Those are the important things,” Corneal continued.

The senior team preparations continues with daily sessions at the Ato Boldon Stadium ahead of the March 20th International friendly against Wales in Wrexham ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup in June in the US.

George: Lawrence challenges us to dig deep for country.
TTFA Media.

As this country’s Senior Footballers get ready to resume preparations on Ash Wednesday for their upcoming international friendly away to Wales later this month, US-based midfielder Kevan George is backing head coach Dennis Lawrence to continue challenging the squad to bring on their best game for the Red,White and Black in 2019.

George is into his fourth week of preseason training with USL club Charlotte Independence and is eagerly awaiting a confirmation of selection for the Wales encounter as Lawrence enters his third week of preparations with a group of home and overseas-based players who are in off season at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

According to George, Lawrence has been able to challenge the players to dig deeper in an effort to bring their best when representing the country.

“We are just going to keep pushing in the right direction. Dennis Lawrence signing a contract extension, it’s great for him, great for the team. He does a good job of blending in the younger talent with the more experienced guys and keep every one accountable. He’s very good at challenging us,” George told TTFA Media.

“No one is comfortable coming in thinking ‘yea I’m going to start this game’. He’s very good at challenging the players tactically and mentally. He puts us into situations where we have to go against the grain to get points. One of his mantras is if we don’t have a chance to win the game, then we don’t lose the game and that resolve that he’s brought into the camp, everyone has responded positively to that.  It’s fantastic news to hear that he has renewed his contract going into Gold Cup As a team everyone will be gearing up, putting in the extra work in preseason and the start of the season to be ready for selection.

George, a former Columbus Crew player, described the Wales fixture as a “mammoth one to start 2019.”

“The game against Wales will be a fantastic test for us. It will be a great confidence booster for us in terms of preparations, playing against world class talent in a highly ranked team in Wales with very good players and household names, Securing this friendly for us in a huge year like this with the 2019 Gold Cup is a mammoth way to start things off,” George said.

He reflected on the past few international assignments and training camps.

“There’s been gradual growth in the national team set up with the level of games we have been securing recently, playing the likes of Thailand, Iran, those are quality opponents. And now to get Wales. It will be tall order for us but we are up for the challenge. Our coach is behind us and we trust in him. He trusts us as players so we just have to go out and get the job done.

“I do not take any call up or selection to the national team lightly. There is so much talent there in our country both local and foreign. To be in the pool for selection is another good step and I’m just waiting to get the manager’s call. I’m just ready to get 2019 on the road because we expect a lot of ourselves. We really want to put a consistent product on the field that Trinidad and Tobago will be proud of. We want to put out a product that will be attractive with high intensity and energy, something entertaining for the fans but sticking to the principles of Dennis Lawrence,” George continued.

As Charlotte pushes on with their preseason preparations, George spoke about being able to balance both club and country duties.

“Preseason has been a lot of hard work at high, high intensity and high quality levels in the four weeks. We’re just not going through the motions It has been going very good for me. The new coach is pushing us beyond our boundaries in every way.

“I’m learning a lot more in every aspect of my game and pushing myself to be better. As you go through your years in soccer, you find little ways that you can not necessarily change your game, but adapt to adapt to new things and trends of the game. It’s more about being able to adapt to different philosophies and new systems under new coaches and how it would benefit me going into the national team’s philosophy,” George said.

Lawrence concerned about fitness; only seven Soca Warriors active with Wales looming.
By Amiel Mohammed (Wired868).

Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team head coach Dennis Lawrence admitted to concerns about match fitness, as he prepares to selects his final squad to face Wales in a friendly international on 20 March in Wrexham.

Lawrence, whose contract was recently extended to mid-2021, identified the fitness—or lack there of—of his players as his major worry leading into the high profile encounter. Wales currently sit 74 places above the Soca Warriors outfit in the FIFA ranking and boast household names like Real Madrid star Gareth Bale and Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey in their ranks.

“I think we all understand how difficult it is because we have been out for a long period of time without any competitive games,” Lawrence told the media. “So the idea was to try and start a training programme as quick as possible to try and get them up to any level.

“The emphasis over the last week has been to get them some sort of fitness…. so we are still a little bit in the volume stage but we have to get them integrated with the football as quick as possible; because we are going to play against players that have had twenty five games in the English Premier League plus.

“It’s not going to be easy.”

Lawrence said the players who are in active competition at the moment would be the first names in the squad for the upcoming affair. But that list is not as extensive as it was when he was a player.

“[Players in season] are going to be one of the main contributors in the squad selection,” said Lawrence. “I don’t think we got too many who are in season and I think, if we take away the boys who are in Saudi Arabia, [we have] Joevin [Jones] who is involved in Germany [and] Levi [Garcia] who is in Israel.

“Apart from that I think everyone else is in pre-season [or] off season.”

From the 21-man squad that lost 1-0 to Iran in the friendly on 15 November, only Daneil Cyrus, Lester Peltier (both Al-Orobah FC—Saudi Arabia), Aubrey David (Deportivo Saprissa—Costa Rica), Khaleem Hyland (Al Faisaly FC—Saudi Arabia) and Joevin Jones (Darmstadt 98—Germany) are active at the moment. Keston Julien has not played for Slovakian club AS Trencin FC in 2019 while uncapped goalkeeper Nicklas Frenderup only recently joined HB Koge in Denmark.

Police FC goalkeeper Adrian Foncette admitted that trying to regain the required fitness level for the game has been difficult.

“It’s been rough for the first few days but we getting into the groove of things,” said Foncette. “It’s really important to have games like this leading up to the Gold Cup. It’s one of the biggest tournaments that we in the Caribbean here play in outside of the World Cup.”

And while they may not be spending happy time on the savannah grass during the Carnival season, Foncette believes it’s worth the sacrifice in the long run.

“It’s always a bit tough [training through Carnival] but I think that we have a common goal, which is first off the Wales game and then the bigger picture which is the Gold Cup in June,” he said. “So as hard as it might be—yeah we are home and around everything that is going on right now—but we just need to buckle down.”

Lawrence spoke of his pleasure at his contract renewal, which he felt maintains continuity as the Warriors go into the second phase of his two tier plan of progression and development. The 2022 Qatar World Cup is the ultimate goal.

United States-based attacking midfielder Ataulla Guerra, who returned to the team last September after a three-year absence, is happy with his part in the current set up.

“Preparation wise, we have been working hard, very hard,” said Guerra. “The coach has a certain philosophy that he wants us to work on and we have been trying hard to get that in our game and try to work on our defensive game.

“We have been trying to keep the ball a lot and put that into our game. They let me play my football, give me an opportunity to play forward and don’t try to stifle my game in any aspect.

“If I can go forward, he gives me the privilege to go and to come back and help the defence. It’s a free role and I enjoy playing that football for coach Lawrence and [Charleston Battery] coach Michael Anhaeuser.”

Guerra expects an intense test in Wales.

“[It] is a big challenge for us like the Iran game,” he said. “It’s a team that we expect to be very physical and [play] a high intensity, fast paced football game. We need to get a result.”

Lawrence said he will select his final squad closer to 20 March.

Gareth Bale: Real Madrid forward injured in Champions League defeat

Gareth Bale scored twice in last season's Champions League final against Liverpool
Gareth Bale could be set for another period on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury as Real Madrid lost at the Champions League last-16 stage to Ajax.

Jeered by home fans in the weekend defeat by Barcelona, the Wales forward came on as a 29th-minute substitute following an injury to Lucas Vazquez.

Bale almost had an instant impact as his shot struck the post, but ended the 4-1 defeat hobbling around the pitch.

The extent of the injury is not known.

Wales have a friendly against Trinidad & Tobago on 20 March, four days before beginning their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign at home to Slovakia in Cardiff.

The former Tottenham player joined the action - with his side already two goals down on the night - to a less hostile reception than he received from Real fans on Saturday, which his agent described as "nothing short of a disgrace".

He was unable to inspire his side to a comeback on Tuesday, however, with Santiago Solari's side's sole focus now on La Liga - in which they sit 12 points adrift of leaders Barcelona.

His future at the Bernabeu appears increasingly uncertain.

Bale was out for three weeks in January with a calf injury.

Senior Team preparations continue… Abu Bakr looks ahead to Wales encounter
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior men’s team payers were back on the training pitch on Ash Wednesday ahead of the March 20th International friendly against Wales at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham.

Head Coach Dennis Lawrence will have just about nine sessions at home again before the squad assembles in Wrexham for the encounter and the former Everton assistant coach is expected to name his final squad next week prior.

Wales head coach Ryan Giggs will name his squad in nine days and a BBC Report stated he is considering calling up Rotherham midfielder Will Vaulks for his first Wales appearance.

Giggs was at the New York Stadium on Saturday as Vaulks impressed in Rotherham’s 3-2 win over Blackburn.Vaulks, 25, was born on the Wirral and played for Tranmere and Workington before joining Falkirk in 2013.Giggs is no stranger in bringing in new players out of the blue, with Anderlecht centre-back James Lawrence recently discovered to have Welsh roots.

One of the players in Lawrence’s current provisional squad is former Danish-based defender Radanfah Abu Bakr who spoke about the importance of the upcoming fixture ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup. Abu Bakr has played in the past two Gold Cups in 2013 and 2015.

“It’s always good to be back, coming off a bit a of a lay off. It’s good to be back out on the pitch again and playing among the boys. It’s been very intense so far and very physical,” Abu Bakr told TTFA Media on Wednesday.

“We have a big game to prepare for. It’s going to be massive test for us and a big challenge. We have been working hard in the sessions trying to get up to speed physically, mentally and tactically as well.

“We had the last couple days off but we’ve been working individually and when we come to the sessions it’s a huge collective effort to get the right mindset and tactics for the game coming up. It’s been very intense because that’s how it’s going to be gameday against a top quality opposition. But we’ve been focused on what he (Lawrence) has been trying to instill in us tactically and of course getting the right mentality when we play,” Abu Bakr continued.

The former Caledonia AIA player stressed that the Wales encounter is a critical one ahead of a hectic period of activities for the Senior Men’s Team with the Gold Cup approaching in June followed by the CONCACAF Nations League later in the year. Staying disciplined throughout the game will be the key to a good result against Giggs’ men.

“The most important thing will be us to stay disciplined throughout the game. Quite a few of our boys are in off season so that’s going to be a bit of a challenge which means we will have to stay very focused during the game, very disciplined tactically and work together as a team,”Abu Bakr stated.

Daniel Carr plays in the ROI, he's active, is a number 9 in the mould of KJ that we we need. Ryan Innis just returned to QPR from his loan spell in Scotland with Dundee where he was active. He's a central defender. Both have TnT passports.

Former coach delighted to welcome Lawrence back to Wrexham for Wales friendly
TTFA Media

Brian Flynn, the man who signed Dennis Lawrence to his first professional contract in the United Kingdom is getting ready to welcome his former player as head coach of Trinidad and Tobago to the Racecourse on March 20th.

Flynn is currently the assistant coach at Wrexham. Back in 2000, he signed Lawrence after Carlos Edwards and Hector Sam had joined the club earlier on. Both Lawrence and Edwards later became the first Wrexham players to play in a World Cup

Flynn is a former midfielder for the Welsh national team with 66 caps. He also managed Wales Under 21 team in 2012 and in 2010 Flynn was confirmed caretaker manager of the Wales national football team after John Toshack stepped down, prior to the appointment of Gary Speed.

“I’m absolutely delighted and looking forward to having Dennis back at the Racecourse. I brought him to Wrexham in 2001 and it was fantastic to have him along with Carlos Edwards and Dennis Lawrence at the club together.. the Trinidad and Tobago boys,” Flynn told TTFA Media on Friday.

Flynn started his career with Burnley, and made his league debut for them in the 1973–74 season, when they were in the old First Division. As a player, he made 200 appearances for Burnley,154 for Leeds United and 100 for Wrexham.

“I’ve followed the boys since their time here. Carlos moved onto the Premier League and I was delighted for him. Dennis went onto Swansea and of course he got into management and I was happy to see that he took on the Trinidad job. It’s going to be exciting to have him over with the Trinidad and Tobago national team and of course we are all looking forward to a very good match with the Wales team,” Flynn said.

“I think it will be a good match for both teams and we are all really looking forward to a thrilling game of football when the two teams meet. Wales are preparing for the Euros and of course Trinidad has its competitions to look ahead to.

“The only one disappointment I had with Dennis and the boys is that we always spoke about my trip to Trinidad and it never came through so I’m hoping after this game we can have a return leg and I can be on the plane for that one. Even if it’s not for a game with Wales, I am hoping he can get me to his home country after all these years,” Flynn said with a laugh.

Meantime, it was announced in Wales on Friday that head coach Ryan Giggs will take his squad to Manchester United club’s Carrington base next week to prepare for the friendly against T&T.

Giggs has called on his United contacts to allow the Wales squad to train at Carrington before the T&T friendly at the Racecourse Ground.

The game is a warm-up for Wales’ opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia in Cardiff four days later. Gareth Bale is expected to be among the players going through their paces at the Carrington Training Centre. Bale suffered an ankle injury during the closing moments of Real Madrid’s Champions League defeat to Ajax on Tuesday.

Giggs is set to name his squad for the Trinidad & Tobago and Slovakia games in north Wales on Tuesday.

Humphrey: No time to slack around the national team.
TTFA Media.

Club Sando midfielder Akeem Humphrey will be hoping he’s done enough over the past two weeks to make the final cut when Dennis Lawrence announces the squad that will travel to Wales for the international friendly on Friday.

Humphrey, a former national under 20 player has been part of the provisional training squad and he’s been  taking it all in stride getting in shape for the upcoming local domestic season with an eye on selection for Wales match and  the Concacaf Gold Cup in June.

“It’s been intense. The gaffer has put out a plan for us and from my point of view the guys have been doing well and putting in the work. Fitness wise we are coming up to par and with eight more days or so left before we leave. I think everyone is looking forward to what’s ahead and all up to the task,” Humphrey told TTFA Media.

“The Wales match is a really important and huge match for us. It would be a honour to be in the squad for such a match especially as a younger player. From here I’ll just be trying my best because the aim is to also make it on the squad for the Gold Cup so hopefully I can just doing my best and take it all the way,” he said.

Humphrey, 23, complimented the work of the Senior Team staff, adding that it was absolutely necessary for the home-based players to maintain high levels when they are on and off national duty.

“The international level is different from club level so obviously we must be at that height in terms of intensity. It’s been a hard but encouraging process. Nothing comes easy. For clubs in the Caribbean, it’s no where near the standard of the national team in terms of training so obviously you have to put in more by yourself but at the end of the day we are here to work.

“The younger players are willing to learn. As young player myself, we are wiling to communicate and work for each other. It’s been phenomenal working under the current coaches. The work has been very good from every member of the staff. I just try my best as a young player to take on board what the coaches are teaching us and try to progress as an individual,” Humphrey said.

“It is very important to keep yourself at that level required for international football. There is no time to slack and lack when you are in training with the national team. You always have to put in the extra work. I always try to take back to the club whatever I learn at the national team and try to help as much payers as I can,” he added.

Silent Warrior: One on one with Club Sando’s Akeem Humphrey
By Kimbly Pierre-Samai (Wired868).

“I am a fighter till the end,” Club Sando midfielder Akeem Humphrey told Wired868.

Soft-spoken but tenacious, Humphrey came to prominence last year as a member of the Trinidad and Tobago National Under-20 Team that lifted the Caribbean crown in 2014. He is making his debut in the Pro League this season and is anxious to make his mark o the top flight.

Wired868 caught up with Humphrey for a one on one:

Full name: Akeem Humphrey

Date of birth: November 25, 1995

Home town: Marabella, South

Local schools attended: Naparima Boys College

Who is your favourite player and why?
My favourite player is Andres Iniesta. He’s a very creative player and he’s a fighter till the end as well.

What is your favourite team?
Barcelona. My favourite player is on the team so I support him.

How would you describe yourself?
I am a fighter. I work hard without letting up.

What is something most people do not know about you?
Most people see me as a quiet person but I am a fighter till the end. On the field I will not stop I will continue to fight until the game is over. Right down until the game ends.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I use my free time to spend time with my mom Julia Hernandez.

What motivates you to succeed?
When I look at the youths today I just see failure. Youths are failing their families and themselves. Out there isn’t easy so I am motivated to succeed and not to fall prey. To stay focused on my goal.

Do you recall when you first started playing football?
I first started playing football as early as seven years old with W Connection.

Who first encouraged you to play football?
My father, Brent Humphrey has always been my encouragement. He used to play for football for Trinidad and Tobago back in the day. From a very early age, he realized my natural talent and has always encouraged and supported me with my football.

What position do you play?
Centre Midfield.

What makes you stand out as a player?
I would say I am a very hard worker; I always do my best and put in the extra work. To give myself an extra boost I work out on my own outside of training days with the team.

Who was the most important coach/coaches and why?
Brian Williams of W Connection was the most instrumental in my development as he taught me the basics. His advice to me was always to make sure I control the ball and execute properly.

How do you keep fit?
In addition to my training with the team, I work out in the mornings and evenings with a 20 minute run and stretches.

How far would you like to reach in football?
My goal is to become a professional football player in Europe.

What was your best moment in football career so far?
My best moment would be when I played with W Connection’s Under 18 team and we won the tournament.

What was the worst moment in your football career?
My worst moment was when I missed a penalty against San Juan Jabloteh in a Super League game in 2014.

How did you feel playing in front of a large crowd at the Under 20 World Cup Qualifier?
It was alot of pressure. Everyone was watching you and if you made a mistake you could  not hide from it. You had to try and stay focus in all the pressure.

What happened during the game against Panama?
We were down and the Panama players were in control of the ball, just knocking it around and I got a little frustrated. I was trying to keep my cool but at the same time I didn’t want to lose, and the bad tackle forced me to make an unforced error.

What was the error you made?
My error was making frustration get the better of me and doing something unsportsmanlike.

How did you feel after?
I felt really bad not only because they discussed it but just knowing that I had let my team and the coach down.

Do you think this lapse in judgment has hampered your football career in Trinidad and Tobago?
No I do not think so at all.

What was the reason you were not selected for the National Under 23 team which recently played at the Pan American Games?
I did not register for the team in time as I got called late. My Visa was also expired so I was unable to travel.

How did you feel not being there with the team?
I was upset as it was a missed opportunity. Scouts hardly come to Trinidad and Tobago anymore as such any internal exposure is through the national team at these tournaments. There were times I cried at home.

What would you like to accomplish this season in the Pro League?
To be a consistent player and continue to do my best.

How do you expect your team, Club Sando to perform in the Pro League?
We have a very strong side this year; I believe we are stronger than last year. We have a good rhythm going. Once all the players step up I believe we can place in the top five.

What advice will you give to young upcoming footballers like yourself?
Work hard, don’t stop, out there is not easy. Always be mentally and physically ready, do the extra work on the field so you that you standout.

I'm in favor of the younger players getting experience from these games as a way to build the program going forward but if some of them haven't played for the year then that will be an additional challenge.

Phillip sees benefits for training camp ahead of Wales friendly/ Giggs names Bale in 31-man squad.
TTFA Media.

Senior Men’s Team goalkeeper Marvin Phillip believes that the last three weeks of preparations has brought benefits to the the provisional squad as members are now closer to a decent match fitness level ahead of the international friendly against Wales on March 20th.

Phillip was in goal in a practice game on Tuesday as the T&T team completed a 6-0 win over Police at the Ato Boldon Stadium

“Over the last few weeks we had a bunch of senior players with some youngsters in some high intensity training  and everyone is up to game fitness now,” Phillip told TTFA Media.

“It’s going to be a massive encounter for us against Wales  and it is going to be tough. We will give them that respect but we are not prepared to lie down. We will try our best to match them. I think coach will get the right mixture to ensure we have a good showing against Wales. I think mentally we need to be strong for the entire 90 minutes. We are getting the support from the Staff and the FA and everything is good thus far,” Phillip continued.

T&T head coach Dennis Lawrence will announce his final squad on the weekend the encounter at the Racecourse in Wrexham.

Meantime, Wales boss Ryan Giggs has named Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale and uncapped Rotherham United midfielder Will Vaulks in a 31-man squad to face  T&T and Slovakia.

The 25-year-old Vaulks  qualifies for Wales through his Welsh mother, with Giggs previously attending a game that Vaulks starred in.

Speaking at a news conference, Giggs told reporters: “I have [had a chat with Bale]. I was as worried as anyone else, but he should be fine. He is a fantastic player, when Gareth turns up he gives everyone a lift.”

There could be a competitive debut for Schalke winger Rabbi Matondo, who won his first cap in November’s friendly defeat against Albania.

Aston Villa left-back Neil Taylor could feature for the first time under Giggs having missed the last two matches through injury.

Giggs confirmed 34-year-old defender Ashley Williams, on loan at Stoke City from Everton, will continue as skipper having succeeded Aaron Ramsey in 2012.

“As long as Ashley is in the squad he will be captain,” said Giggs. I have said that in the past. He is the captain going into the campaign. “

Wales Squad:

Goalkeepers:

Wayne Hennessey (Crystal Palace), Danny Ward (Leicester), Adam Davies (Barnsley), Chris Maxwell (Charlton, on loan from Preston).

Defenders:

Ashley Williams (Stoke, on loan from Everton), Chris Gunter (Reading), Neil Taylor (Aston Villa), Ben Davies (Tottenham), Connor Roberts (Swansea), James Lawrence (Anderlecht), Ethan Ampadu (Chelsea), Tom Lockyer (Bristol Rovers), Chris Mepham (Bournemouth), Paul Dummett (Newcastle), Declan John (Swansea).

Midfielders:

Ryan Hedges (Barnsley), Joe Allen (Stoke), David Brooks (Bournemouth), Ben Woodburn (Liverpool), Harry Wilson (Derby, on loan from Liverpool), Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal), Matt Smith (FC Twente, on loan from Manchester City), Lee Evans (Wigan), Daniel James (Swansea), Will Vaulks.

Forwards:

Rabbi Matondo (Schalke), Sam Vokes (Stoke), Tom Lawrence (Derby), Gareth Bale (Real Madrid), Tyler Roberts (Leeds).

If so, why does DL call up 31 year old Willis Plaza, whilst Rundell Winchester (25) and England born Daniel Carr  (24) with a TnT passport is overlooked? Both are also active which makes it even more puzzling for a game of this magnitude.

No Shahdon Winchester and no Joevin Jones (who incidentally was subbed off after 32mins today).............and no Ramjitsingh (an MLS goalkeeper)

The omission of Shahdon is not a surprise. He's not doing the business. By my calculations he has scored 3 goals in the last two years for his clubs. And the last goal he scored for T&T was against Guyana in November 2017.

Second homecoming for Lawrence as Senior Men’s Team to train at Everton on Monday.
TTFA Media.

There will be yet another homecoming for Head coach Dennis Lawrence in Wales next week. Today the former defender was able to confirm use of the Everton Training facilities  for the senior team’s first training session on UK soil ahead of Wednesday’s International friendly against Wales at The Racecourse in Wrexham.

Lawrence was of course an assistant coach at the Premier League club alongside manager Roberto Martinez. This will be his first appearance at the club’s facilities as Head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago team. Lawrence was also a player at Wrexham and the contingent there will be ready to welcome their former captain to the Racecourse on Wednesday. He was featured in the club’s matchday programme today (Saturday).

Lawrence had a discussion with David Harrison, Everton’s club secretary and director of football who expressed delight at being able to accommodate Lawrence’s request to assist T&T in their preparations for Wednesday’s match at the club’s state of the art facility at Finch Farm in Merseyside.

“I had a discussion with David and he was happy to assist and allow use of the Finch Farm training facility for the session on Monday,” Lawrence told TTFA Media.

“It’s an excellent facility and it would be a great experience for some of the boys to have a session there. We are extremely grateful to David and Everton football club for making this possible.”

The Finch Farm facility is Everton Football Club’s 55 acre facility which  houses both the Everton first team and the youth academy.

The facility boasts some of the finest training facilities in the world, and features 10 full-size grass pitches on three plateaus, one of which is a floodlit along with an additional floodlit synthetic pitch and specialist training areas for fitness work and goalkeepers, as well as an exact recreation of the pitch at Goodison Park. Inside the training complex there are extensive changing facilities for both the senior squad and the Academy players.

National team logistics manager Wayne Cunningham has been in Wrexham for the past two days, arriving ahead to prepare for the squad’s arrival on Monday. The T&T squad departs for Wales on Sunday.

Ross Russell Jr earns surprise call-up.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

North East Stars' Ross Russell Jr, 25, a former Defence Force football stand-out, was the major surprise in a 22-man squad named by T&T senior men's football team coach Dennis Lawrence for the March 20 friendly against Wales, in Wrexham, England.

The squad which departs today from Tobago for Manchester England around 5.15pm was released to the local media by T&T Football Federation Press Officer, Shaun Fuentes on Friday night, while coach Lawrence briefed the media at the Ato Boldon Stadium Couva yesterday morning ahead of the team's departure today for England.

The full team selected by Lawrence includes Sheldon Bateau, Cordell Cato, Daneil Cyrus, Aubrey David, Nickalas Frenderup, Adrian Foncette, Levi Garcia, Kevon George, Neveal Hackshaw, Triston Hodge, Akeem Humphrey, Khaleem Hyland, Alvin Jones, Nathan Lewis, Carlyle Mitchell, Duane Muckette, Leston Paul, Marvin Phillip, Lester Peltier, Willis Plaza, Russell Jr, and Mekeil Williams.

Last August Russell Jr was freed today, after two years in jail awaiting trial for the murder of former Diego Martin resident Selwyn Gaff, 28, who June 6, 2016, from a gunshot wound after being found in the Macqueripe hillside.

A former national youth player Russell Jr, who is the son of former national goalkeeper and the senior men's team current goalkeeper coach and his cousin Balondemu Julius, were detained after Gaff’s death.

They were both then discharged from the Defence Force and formally charged, a week later, with Gaff’s murder, possession of arms and ammunition and shooting at Gaff’s friend, Jesse Quashie, with intent to do previous bodily harm.

While Russell Jr was cleared and freed 36-year-old Julius is still in custody awaiting trial

Commenting on Russell Jr selection, Lawrence, a former Defence Force member himself said, "One of the things that I identified from early on was that we needed to strengthen the left back position, and under recommendation from what I have seen of him, Ross did very well coming down to the back end of last season.

Lawrence added, "He was invited to be part of the training group and I think he really impressed with what he offered us and deserves his selection".

The T&T coach was also full of praise for the new call-up for showing great character is trying to get his career back on track

He said, "I think we also need to take into consideration that we are talking about a footballer that was caught in an issue that he was accused of something and for which he was found not guilting of.

"And if you look at it now, part of the reform is that the boy is back and getting his football career back to where it should be, and I think we need to see that as a positive".

"Because a lot come out and go back in and we are talking here about a football who is here now ready to get his career up on the track and its an absolute pleasure and a reward for him to be where he is now, so I see that only as a positive", stated Lawrence.

Speaking on the eve of the team's departure for Wrexham, England, where the 79th world ranked T&T will come up against Wales, ranked 19th in the world, Lawrence said he had three weeks preparation with the local contingent and would like to commend the players that were involved in that preparation because it was a tough ask.

"We had to put them through their paces because I think we all understood they had been inactive for a long period of time which is not good for any footballer, so we had to try and make good use of the time we had".

"Secondly, I would like to say thanks to Wales for taking the opportunity to see T&T as formidable opposition in their preparation for their Euro qualifiers".

"I think in all the preparations went well, barring a couple one or two little issues we had, which was well documented and has been all dealt with.

In terms of the squad selection, Lawrence said he had one real issue in Ataulla Guerra who picked up a slight injury concern.

"The injury didn't allow him to take part in the majority of the training sessions and from that point, he wasn't in any fit condition to make the squad.

"Losing Guerra to injury is a blow because he an important part of the team, so he is not involved, and someone else will take his place, and its an opportunity for them and that's the way we have to look at it.

"We also have the situation with Joevin (Jones) that for personal reasons had to excused, reasons that I am not in a position to make any more comments on.

"I think I will respect his wishes in keeping it private and confidential, but overall now is about the team, the group travelling from Trinidad to get to the UK to meet up in the preparation for the game against Wales, and hopefully we have got a squad capable of going out there and representing T&T well and putting in a performance that will give us a positive result".

In terms of preparation for the local group, Lawrence said what he would say personally is that he would have liked them to be playing competitive football.

"We tried to put together a three-week training programme, and we managed to get three friendly games against St Ann's Rangers (two) and Police.

"But we all know its difficult and we are going to take on a Wales squad, has got players who have played 30 games in the Spanish Liga as well as English Premier League.

"So in terms of the players match tempo, it's going to be a bit difficult for them, so that's why it was important to select a squad with a lot of the players that are involved in leagues like Willis Plaza and Khaleem Hyland, and Sheldon Bateau, because these boys are more active at the moment".

While admitting his anxiety about returning to his former club and city of residence Wrexham and the match against Wales, Lawrence was quick to point out that his team needs to remember the bigger picture ahead.

"We need to stay focus and understand what this is all about. This is part preparation for the Gold Cup because the end result is the Gold Cup and this is the next step. We also got the June friendlies coming up, but right now we are into the Wales game.

Concerning then two players who were released from the training squad last week after failing a random drug test Lawrence opted against revealing their names, saying "Our jobs are to help the players, not to reveal anything. The clubs have been notified and we are working with the clubs and the idea now is to try and help these players because they are too important for T&T football, so we need to help them so that they can become available.

Asked if they would be reunited back into the squad in the future, the T&T coach stated, "I believe what they can do for T&T football is integral, so the idea now is to help them to work with the football clubs as the T&TFF is going to assist in any way we can because we need to help the players.

"We need to get them where we think they should be and that is representing T&T football.

Meanwhile, there will be yet another homecoming for Head coach Dennis Lawrence in Wales next week. The former defender was able to confirm use of the Everton Training facilities for the senior team's first training session on UK soil ahead of Wednesday's International friendly against Wales at The Racecourse in Wrexham.

Other thing: why not play teams that finished at the top of the Pro League in the prep matches. The teams that would have been preparing for the CONCACAF Champions League, for instance. Or was the non-compliance issue an internal secret already? Why not play the strongest local opposition rather than the weakest?

If I'm Levi Garcia, this is a match I want to play 70-90 minutes at high level of concentration and intensity with a good mix of individual product and telling contributions to the collective orientation. Even if we lose the match, there can still be winners and then everyone wins. Bubble de pot, Levi. You have the tools!

Rangers were the only team in training. No other team was really training before carnival. In fact, most still aren't. Rangers have also enlisted a lot of the star players and starters from the other teams after their take over.

Scandalous for a pro league that has had a projected March start date, but a distortion that reflects what a corporate presence can achieve.

Also, say, enlisting a Jerry Moe, a Keith Jeffrey, a Angus Eve to pull together a representative squad to play the national team would not have hurt as alternative competition.

With the new restructuring of the local football leagues, June is the projected start as the joint select committee tries to make it happen.

And enlisting a Moe, Angus etc to pull together a team might only be good in theory compared to playing that Rangers team that's been training since January and currently trains 4-5 times per week.

The June start is a much-modified kick-off date for the league. Let's not pretend that it is not. The projected start date has been shifted and adjusted not through planning to start in June from the inception, but through having to make incremental changes to strike a balance as the league strives to get on firmer ground.

AM, I know you are not the messenger or water carrier for the league. Nonetheless, what you have pointed out emphasizes one of the maladies with the state of domestic football that I have alluded to ... there is something strikingly wrong with the picture of one team deep into a training regimen and other teams in various stages of engagement from idleness/relative idleness to trying to achieve the financial prerogatives necessary to be included in this year's competition and to attract players/rebuild squads. There is never firm ground where there is shifting sand and there are elements surrounding the league that play out like musical chairs ... some club is always the odd man out. Also, the condition of mass exodus of players at club level in domestic football has to be addressed.

The picture of shifting starting dates and league calendars has been an unstable and accommodating one from year to year. In theory and in practice, that should not be the case. The PL's flexible start dates have been influenced by several factors, many of which revolve around financing. But the practice does not kick the theory to the curb.

This year, with the UEFA input ... we get it, there's a comprehensive picture that can't be plastered over or rushed. And, the decision-makers in the league are frank and plain talking people, not obstructionists.

I say all of that as a friend of the PL who literally spent tens of hours trying to help impartially at club level with an innovative solution when no subvention was available. Even that was hard.

It's an open secret that the provisional squad had players in various states of inactivity.  What I'm suggesting is that the preparation for Wales need not have been viewed as a binary choice, because not all players who are or should be on the cusp of a NT call-ups are at Rangers or Police, because they themselves shared the same states of inactivity shared by those actually brought in to the provisional prep.

There is no perfect solution or choice. Just options, choices and optimality.

Everything you are saying is spot on and is the damning reality. One can only hope for a light at the end of the tunnel. And for the few that still want to fight the good fight, good luck.

Ironically though, considering the exodus of players to USL, India, etc and the Army guys who are in training, almost all the other players of decent quality, it looks like are at La Horquetta Rangers and Police. The talent pool is extremely shallow at the moment for pro league clubs which speaks to a larger problem.

Trinidad and Tobago work out at Everton ahead of Wales clash
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men’s Squad arrived in Wrexham on Monday morning and wasted little time before undergoing their first training session on Welsh soil as head coach Dennis Lawrence put his players through their paces at the Everton Training facility at Finch Farm, a mere 20 minutes drive from the team’s base camp at the Double Tree hotel.

Lawrence had the majority of his players involved with the exception of Deportivo Saprissa defender Aubrey David who arrived later on Monday evening. Lawrence’s session was a lively one in wet conditions as the rains came down for most of the session. But it didn’t dampen the mood among skipper Khaleem Hyland and his teammates nor Lawrence and his staff as the former Everton assistant was warmly welcomed and looked after by some his former staff members at the English Premiership club. Club secretary and director of football operations David Harrison looked on at the session and had some glowing remarks to make about Lawrence.

“We got a call from Dennis  to see if we could help out with some facilities for training and obviously we are delighted to see Dennis again and delighted to be able to invite the team to come over and train here again,” Harrison told TTFA Media.

“Dennis was a really well respected member of staff with Roberto’s (Martinez) team here and everyone is delighted to see him back today

“Occasionally we tend to have a lot of of European teams come here if they are playing over at Anfield, Champions League or Europa league games we tend to let them use our facilities the day before a game here,” he said.

When asked where his heart lies come Wednesday’s clash at The Racecourse, Harrison responded,

“It’s got to be with Dennis really. It’s a big game for Dennis and a real test for some of the players but I’m sure they will be able to step to the plate come Wednesday night. It’s a real coaching challenge for Dennis as well.

“We were delighted when Dennis got the position with the Trinidad and Tobago team. He was always a  well respected member of Roberto’s coaching staff and you can see he’s taking a lot of his learning from his time at Everton and it was really good to see him out in the middle of the park with the boys, passing on his knowledge to them and hopefully they could give him a result on Wednesday evening,’” Harrison added.

Team skipper Khaleem Hyland added, “It’s been a great start for us even thought it’s a bit cold and rainy today but this is typical European weather  The facilities were great and hopefully we can continue to focus on the job. Since I have been on the national team the mood has always been great. It’s been one love and one family. We are just looking to work hard on and off the pitch as we look ahead to having a strong performance on Wednesday.

“We have to give respect to Wales as the have world class players but we cannot show too much respect. Football is a game won on the day and who capitalises on their chances will be the winner. Hopefully we can stick to our game plan and complete our job,” the T&T captain said.

The T&T team will train at the Racecourse on Tuesday evening ahead of Wednesday’s match which is expected to be a sold out affair.

Trinidad and Tobago aim for strong showing against Wales
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men will be looking to put on a solid display when they come up against Ryan Giggs’ Wales in an international friendly at the Racecourse in Wrexham from 7:45pm (3:45 pm TT time).

Trinidad and Tobago head coach Dennis Lawrence addressed the Welsh media at a press briefing just prior to the team’s final training session at the game venue on Tuesday evening. The former Wrexham captain was asked to comment on his history with the club but he of course was more focused on the task ahead which is to try and guide his side to a decent performance on Wednesday night.

Under Lawrence, T&T has conceded just three goals in six encounters dating back to March 2018. They’ve won two, drawn one, lost one to Panama prior to that country’s 2018 World Cup appearance and lost their previous two, 1-0 to both Thailand and Iran.

Former Trinidad and Tobago defender Marvin Andrews showed up at Tuesday’s session to offer his support and led the team in prayer both at the start and the end of the session. Andrews is a former Wrexham player himself and Chris Birchall will also attend Wednesday’s match. Also looking on at Tuesday’s session was former Welsh legend Joey Jones who was a Wrexham coach during Lawrence’s playing days at the club along with Carlos Edwards and Hector Sam. Jones played 72 times for Wales and also won the European Cup with Liverpool and the English League championship in 1977.

“In terms of our preparations I think we have done as much as we can. We all arrived here safely an no injuries to report The boys are looking forward to the game against Wales after a good afternoon session,” Lawrence said.

“This is my second home so it’s always great pleasure to be back especially at Wrexham football club because this clubs means a lot to me and I’ve got a good affiliation with the people at the club so I’m delighted to be here. The most exciting thing for me is I want the boys to get an experience of what this beautiful place can offer them and the only way for them to do that is to be able to go in and put in a performance. I’m excited and a bit emotional but looking forward to it all,” added the former Everton assistant.

About the T&T side and the preparations at this time, Lawrence told the Welsh media, “We’re in the rebuilding stage because after we didn’t qualify for Russia we then immediately started to think about Qatar 2022 and to be able to do that we had to put in a process in place and part of the process is now where we are … going into the Gold Cup in June.

“We’ve got a young with some experience players.. a nice mixed bunch at the moment. We’ve got players with some fantastic qualities. It’s now getting them to play as a team to be in a professional manner and all work for each other. The idea going into the game tomorrow is to compete because we want to compete against teams like Wales who are world class in my eyes. They’ve got world class talent in Gareth (Bale) and Aaron (Ramsey ) and Joe Allen and Ashley and all these boys. We are in that phase now where we need to compete against these and see if we can put in the performances,” Lawrence added.

Israel-based winger Levi Garcia is hoping to have an impact following a return to the T&T side from injury for much of 2018.

“It’s good to be back in the squad and I’m really honoured and thankful to have gotten the call again from coach Lawrence. It’s a big game for us and very important as part of the preparations for the Gold Cup,” Garcia told TTFA Media. “The mood has been good. We’ve had two good training sessions here and everyone is looking forward to putting in a strong performance in the match.

Giggs told the Press at Wales’ media briefing earlier on Tuesday that four of his players were unavailable including Aaron Ramsey who missed a training session due to a thigh problem, In-form Swansea City star Daniel James, Anderlecht defender James Lawrence and Bournemouth winger David Brooks all trained separately from the main group during an open training session at the AON complex on Tuesday morning. The three needed additional time to recuperate after hectic schedule for their clubs in recent weeks, according to Giggs.

“Some players have not played since last week, some players have played at the weekend,” added the Wales manager. James Lawrence played on Sunday evening so he met up with us on Monday. Dan James has played a lot of games in a short space of time and the way that he is, he’s a dynamic player, we just thought we’d give him another day but he’s fine,” Giggs said.

“It’s just a balancing act. Players are at different stages so some players need games, some don’t. It’s a good opportunity with the friendly fixture that we can do that (mix up selection). We’ll just have to see as we go along in the game,” he added.

The match will be aired live on Sky Sports.

Post by: Deeks on March 19, 2019, 11:24:26 PM

June use to be the traditional opening of football in TT. It ran until December. Then the pro- league try to run the league along Euro schedule. It failed.  I was long and boring. Invisible fans.  Our league to to small to run a 9 month schedule. The league should be compact.  It should run until the end of Jan. If ever the league expands to 18 teams, then I could see a 9 month schedule.

We not looking bad, we're having room to play in our half of the field but not much success in their half. Same can be said for them but they're starting to establish more forward runs and passes deeper in our half that resulted in some half chances.

Wales is the superior team so far but not by much.

T&T look very good as well expect for the final third of the game, mid in fwd.

For a team of inactive players at club level, T&T don't look to bad, hopefully they don't fall apart in the second half when the gas run out.

Cyrus, David, Nathan and Bateau are having good games.

Kevon George got a yellow in min 41st.

No creativity in T&T midfield with Paul, Hyland and George as mostly defensive minded players.

The long balls is not working for T&T because the transition from midfield to forward is to slow.

Plaza look more mobile than before, but to many miscommunication between zones.

Peltier needs to be on and push Levi as a false 9 with Plaza.

No Ramsey and Bale.

Levi is a raw talent who can be a big player or a good player who cannot produce the final touch.

Overall, Lawrence is doing a good job with the little he have at his disposal.

Stern John as well.

He got 60 but it should've really been about 70 if fitness/injury wan't an issue.

Tails of two half.

T&T couldn't get 3 passes together in the 2nd half.

And they had no idea going forward, Kenwyne Jones should have never retired, we don't have a strong or true center forward and Lawrence is to stubborn (like Maurizio Sarri) to call up some decent forward we have scattered over North America and even Europe.

Ben Woodburn for Wales is a top player. Ryan Hedges is a wild man and should have gotten a red card.

T&T did well for a team that most members are not regulars or consistently active for their clubs.

Peltier and Cato added nothing to the team when they came on. Cato was the reason Wales scored, he did not clear the initial ball.

Lawrence, took off Plaza and put Peltier to play striker was depressing. Peltier is a wingman and I like him there.

Hyland showed some good skills, beating 3 man and made a splitting pass that T&T could have break and scored, best play of the game, Hyland showed maturity and have to be the smartest player on the team.

Anyway we could recall Keon Daniel? We need some spark in midfield. Some brian.

I like Lawrence and I give him respect for doing the best he can at his disposal, however, he need to stop playing to pragmatic for long periods hence we played with 3 defence minded players the entire game even when subs were made, Hackshaw, Paul, Hyland, George. Is like playing with 7 defenders.

We played not to concede or get embarrassed.

Wales was nothing spectacular, they would have been beaten by a fit T&T side.

I hope the TTFA get many more games for T&T before the Gold Cup, definitely some good signs but Lawrence need a few more attacking players and maybe some help on the bench from a good attack minded coach.

To give away a goal like that at that time was criminal. 2nd half performance was full of discipline. We lack that go to centre forward on top.

Ben Woodburn strike seals it late for Wales in 1-0 victory over T&T.
faw.cymru/en

Ben Woodburn scored a 91st minute to secure victory over Trinidad & Tobago in Wales’ return to the Racecourse Ground.

Wales were made to work hard by their opponents who provided a competitive test for an experimental Wales side in their preparation for their European Championship Qualifying campaign.

Wales had early attacking intentions as Ryan Hedges crossed to Tyler Roberts for a looping header which was comfortably saved by Marvin Phillip.

Trinidad created a chance of their own as Levi Garcia teed up Khaleem Hyland who curled his shot straight at Danny Ward.

Debutant Will Vaulks impressed as he drove the hosts forward through the break-up of play from Trinidad.

Trinidad didn’t create a lot of opportunities but put together a few passages of plays that could have troubled Wales.

George Thomas went closest after Hedges laid it off from a short-corner, firing just wide of Marvin Phillip’s goal.

Wales dominated possession in a goalless first half but were unable to find a cutting edge in the final third as they sought a clear-cut opportunity.

In the second half, Woodburn showed good feet to feed through Thomas, who forced Phillip to save to his near-side.

Chris Gunter made an important goal line clearance to deny his opposite number Aubrey David the opening goal after Garcia pulled the ball back to him.

Vaulks who continued his performance into the second-half almost opened his Wales account, but his goal-bound shot was blocked.

Wales had the ball in the net, but it did not count. Hedges lofted a ball over to Thomas who flicked a header past Phillip but the linesman’s flag denied Thomas his first Wales senior goal.

A header from outside the box from Vaulks sailed just over the bar of the Trinidad goalkeeper as Wales continued to pile the pressure on.

Lee Evans almost snuck home his effort after Lawrence heeled it back to the midfielder with Phillip forced into action at his post.

Opportunities came at a minimum towards the end of the game, but Wales continued to carry the ball forward in search of a late winner.

Ben Woodburn and Wales made the most of the additional four minutes shown as they opened the scoring. Vaulks crossed into Woodburn who chested from close-range to secure Wales the victory.

The 18-year-old almost doubled his tally when a free-kick sailed just wide of the post. His effort was the last action of the game as Tim Marshall blew for a Wales victory.

Ben Woodburn scrambles late reward for starless Wales against Trinidad.
theguardian.com.

Gareth Bale was present but not risked for a match in which Wales snatched a late winner through Ben Woodburn, a deserved outcome after constant second-half pressure that improved Ryan Giggs’s underwhelming record.

Having taken over a year on Friday, Giggs’s 10th match in charge ended as a fourth victory to go with five defeats and a draw. Before Sunday’s opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia the manager protected all his A-listers. This meant no Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen, Ben Davies or first-choice goalkeeper, Wayne Hennessey.

Giggs pointed to Bale’s full part in Real Madrid’s win over Celta Vigo last Saturday. “It was a first 90 minutes in three months,” he said. “He took part in a little bit of training yesterday, trained this morning really well but it was too much of a risk for him.”

Instead there was a chance for the fringe members to push a claim with Newcastle United’s Paul Dummett the sole regular Premier League performer – the Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward a reserve, along with Liverpool’s Woodburn.

Dennis Lawrence’s Trinidad & Tobago came into the contest having lost their last two games and in Sheldon Bateau of Norway’s Sarpsborg had a solitary Europe-based player.

Lawrence, a former Wrexham player of five years, watched as Wales started brightly. Woodburn, the striker in Giggs’s 4-2-3-1, slipped a ball into Ryan Hedges and his dink was reached by Tyler Roberts though the Trinidad goalkeeper, Marvin Phillip, was not troubled.

The visitors operated a 4-4-1-1 and the captain, Khaleem Hyland, offered a first threat, taking aim from distance at Ward’s goal. Then came a burst of quality as the Trinidad No 9, Wills Plaza, found Hyland and he recycled the ball to Nathan Lewis at speed; Wales were grateful nothing came of it.

So, too, were the visitors when George Thomas sprayed wide as the interval neared. Just before the whistle Woodburn suffered a painful challenge from Kevan George but was able to resume.

For the second half Giggs brought off Ward for Adam Davies, the Barnsley keeper making his international debut. Lawrence’s switch was to replace Plaza with Cordell Cato of Oklahoma City.

Giggs named Ashley Williams as captain despite the on-loan Everton centre-back’s struggle to play regularly for Stoke City and the manager will not have been happy to see him cede the ball carelessly.

When Woodburn slipped in Thomas the No 11’s fierce shot warmed Phillip’s fingers – and the support – as he saved to his right. Suddenly the game flared: Levi Garcia rounded Davies at the other end and found Aubrey David and his effort was cleared off the Wales line by Gunter.

From here Giggs’s men pressed and finally got the breakthrough, Woodburn’s chest home coming from a Vaulks’s ball to the back post. His goal gave Wales the perfect boost before the serious stuff, this weekend’s start to their qualification campaign for the European Championship.

“I’m gutted for the boys,” Lawrence said.

Giggs defends decision to rest Bale amid disappointed Wales fans
By Dafydd Pritchard (BBC).

Ryan Giggs says he understands why some Wales fans were disappointed that Gareth Bale was left out of Wednesday's friendly win over Trinidad and Tobago.

Wrexham's Racecourse Ground was sold out for Wales' first match in the north since 2008.

But some supporters were left disappointed as Giggs fielded a second string team ahead of Sunday's opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia.

"Of course it's disappointing for the fans," said Giggs.

"They want to see the likes of Gareth. But it's my job to make sure we are ready for Sunday.

"Gareth got his first 90 mins in three months [for Real Madrid last weekend], took part in a little bit of training yesterday, then trained this morning, really well.

"So it was just too much of a risk with Sunday in mind. That was the case with a few of the players. I gave the chance for players to push forward for Sunday, but also keeping players fresh.

"Originally when I planned the game, it was going to be a first-half [at full strength] and then we make changes.

"But Brooksy [David Brooks] took a knock at the weekend on his ankle, Harry [Wilson] has played a lot of games, Connor [Roberts] has played a lot of games. Aaron [Ramsey] picked up that little knock. It gave me the opportunity to look after them at the start of the week."

As Giggs made wholesale changes to his side to face Trinidad and Tobago, an unfamiliar looking Wales team struggled to impose themselves on their opponents ranked 93rd in the world.

Former Wales captain Kevin Ratcliffe, who was a part of the BBC Radio Wales commentary team for the game, said in the first half: "It's looking like a bunch of players that have been thrown together, not knowing when to pass it."

Wales improved and eventually forced a winning goal two minutes into added time as Ben Woodburn chested the ball in from close range.

"The performance, first half especially, I was really pleased with," said Giggs.

"We had a couple of days to work on a few things and felt we did that first half without that final third composure, making the right decisions and having a bit of quality.

"Trinidad and Tobago didn't have anything. But I reminded the players at half-time about Albania [where Wales lost in November]. It was exactly the same in Albania so we had to keep that clean sheet.

"We rode our luck a bit in the second half, obviously Gunts [Chris Gunter] fantastic clearance off the line and credit to Trinidad and Tobago, second half they made it difficult for us. We just had to be patient.

"To score late in the game is a great trait for teams to have so really pleased with the result."

Wales edge T&T with late goal.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior Men had their hearts broken as Wales got a 93rd minute winner from Liverpool’s Ben Woodrum to give the hosts a late 1-0 victory before a packed Racecourse in Wrexham on Wednesday night.

It was a cruel way for T&T to finish the match after the held their own for most of the match and should have gone ahead in the second half.

In terms of chances, Tyler Roberts saw his header saved and Lee Evans hit over when found by Ryan Hedges. George Thomas drilled a low shot wide and had another effort from range pushed round the post.

But it was actually Trinidad and Tobago who created the best opening. A poor throw by goalkeeper Adam Davies allowed Willis Plaza to find Levi Garcia and he checked back to square to Aubrey David, whose finish was heading in until Chris Gunter cleared off the line.

Wales had a goal correctly ruled out for offside when Thomas headed in a flicked pass by Hedges and Will Vaulks went close with a firm strike.

There were a few tasty tackles in the game, the meatiest being Evans on Leston Paul. Evans was shown a yellow card when his studs down shin foul could easily have warranted a red.

Rabbi Matondo, Schalke’s signing from Manchester City, was introduced in the second half and looked lively. Before Woodburn gave Giggs his fourth victory in 10 games in charge. Now the real action begins.

Joining Bale in watching from the stands were regulars Allen, Davies, Wayne Hennessey, and David Brooks. Chris Mepham and Dan James also had their feet up and should start on Sunday. Ramsey was rested due to a thigh issue. Connor Roberts and Harry Wilson remained on the bench throughout.

For T&T, skipper Khaleem Hyland had a solid performance while goalkeeper Marvin Phillip was tidy in between the posts. T&T’s back four of Sheldon Bateau, Daneil Cyrus, Triston Hodge and Aubrey David also resisted anything the Welsh came at them with until the closing seconds.

Decent and organized showing by the boys...
switched off in injury time to concede a sloppy one.
AGAIN..we wont play a second game in this FIFA window..
and we only used two subs ( and one more in 90th min)..
we were allowed six subs...so really only 13 men out of 22 got any playing time.
to make matters worse..im sure they break up the team tomorrow..so not even four extra training days and team bonding...and the next International window is competitive tournaments...Nations league in June and Gold Cup in July.
WCQ is next year...we cant keep wasting International windows.

Solid assessment especially the part about Sarri. However all the outfield players that played today are either in mid-season or are 2-3 games into their season (except Lewis) and all are starters for their club except Leston at the moment.

A 32 year old Keon Daniel whose commitment is shoddy at best is definitely not the creativity answer either. All we can do is hope that when Guerra, Joevin and Molino return, they could help in that regard.

I suspect some players decide they not playing for no $300 match fee

And if that is the case, maximum respect to them.

You have to take a stand somewhere.  An infinite amount of empty promises will do that to a body

Lawrence reveals reasons for Joevin and Guerra omissions and inclusion of Russell Jr
By Kirwin Weston (Wired868).

Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team head coach Dennis Lawrence revealed that German-based flanker Joevin Jones and United States-based attacking midfielder Ataulla Guerra were ruled unavailable to face Wales next week, as he tried to explain his 22-man squad for international friendly action at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham.

Guerra, according to Lawrence, has a slight injury and missed several sessions while Jones allegedly asked to be omitted for personal reasons.

“I am not in any position to make any more comment on [Jones’ withdrawal],” said Lawrence. “I respect his wishes in that it is private and confidential.”

It is the second time in the past five months that Jones withdrew from selection despite being physically able to play. Last October, he also pulled out of a trip to Thailand after saying he needed to mentally regroup.

Lawrence criticised Jones then for his late decision—which left the Warriors with a player short in their travelling party—and published the latter’s letter. But he was more conciliatory today.

Once more, Lawrence pointed to the number of national players in their pre-season and off season as his biggest worry heading into the Wales clash. The Warriors coach addressed this somewhat with a three-week camp for the local-based players but suggested it also prompted his recall of 31 year old forward Willis Plaza, who is campaigning with Churchill Brothers in the India professional league at present.

“For me, I would’ve liked [my players] to be playing competitive football,” said Lawrence. “We tried to put together a three-week training programme [and] we managed to get three friendly games—two against Rangers [and] one against the Police.

“[But] I think we all know is difficult because we are going take on a Wales squad that [has] got players that played over 30 games in the Spanish La Liga, 30 games in the English Premier League and so forth.

“So, in terms of the players’ match tempo, I think it’s going to be a bit difficult for them. So that’s why it was important to select a squad with a lot of the players that are involved in leagues, like Willis Plaza, Khaleem Hyland, and Sheldon Bateau; because these boys are more active at the moment.”

But how did Morvant Caledonia United winger-cum-left back Ross Russell Jr get in the squad ahead of overseas-based players like Keston Julien (AS Trecin—Slovakia) and Noah Powder (Real Monarchs—USA)?

At present, Powder is in pre-season while Julien, although still in season, has not played for his club since last October. Lawrence said Russell Jr—whose father, Ross Russell, played alongside Lawrence for Defence Force and Trinidad and Tobago and is the current goalkeeping coach—earned his chance by impressing at their training camp.

“We needed to strengthen in the left back position,” said Lawrence. “[…] Ross did very well coming down to the back end of last season and he was invited to be part of the training group and I think he really impressed with what he offers us.

“I think he deserves his selection.”

A versatile flanker, the 26 year old Russell Jr was considered better than useful at Pro League level with his ability to play in either full back or wing role. But his career trajectory was dramatically altered when he was charged for murder in 2016.

It took two years before lawmen realised they held the wrong man; and by then he lost his job as a soldier.

Lawrence suggested that Russell Jr’s international call up—his first at senior international level—was reward for his efforts since his release on 20 August 2018.

“Part of the reform is the boy [is] back now and getting his football career to where it should be,” said Lawrence. “I think we need to see that as a positive. A lot come out [of jail] and go back in.”

Lawrence suggested that he still hopes to have a look at players like Leland Archer, Akeem Roach, Shannon Gomez and Powder—who are all under 23 years old—but felt the short preparation time for the Wales match meant it was not the best opportunity to integrate them.

The Warriors coach confirmed that two local-based players were cut from his training squad due to failed drug tests but declined to name them. He said the duo could be important national players and he hopes they get the help necessary to return to his squad.

“Our job is to help the players, not to reveal anything,” he said. “The clubs have been notified [and] they’re working with the clubs.”

The Warriors depart from Tobago to Manchester tomorrow from where they will head to their training base in Chester, just 15 minutes from Wrexham. Their first training session is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Lawrence, who spent eight years in Wales as a player with Wrexham and then Cardiff City, said he had been trying to get this game ever since his appointment in January 2017.

Trinidad and Tobago, again, will play only once in this FIFA international match window. Lawrence said this was because their other friendly offers were outside of Europe and FIFA regulations advise against playing in different confederations within such short timeframes.

“We had the opportunity to play other friendlies, but [they] were in different confederations,” said Lawrence, whose outfit are preparing for the June 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Solid in defence, combative in midfield, poor in attack. Clearly we need a creative/attacking midfielder to move the ball from midfield to striker. We need a number 9 striker too. Kevin Molino springs to mind as the obvious missing piece but there's Kristian Lee Him in Germany, Matthew Woo Ling in Cyprus. We also have Daniel Carr in Ireland. Woo ling is born Trini the other two is Canada and England born with Trini passports. Also is it worthwhile trying to woo Bostock out of exile/retirement? Keon Daniel even? As it stands we definitely can't go forward with that attack that we had last night. It definitely needs some invention and intervention to press on.

What about Greg Ramjitsingh? I know I'm probably beating a dead horse here but we need to hear from DL why he keeps getting omitted!

Ben Woodburn for Wales is a top player.
You could see he's their marquee player for the future (right now anyway) and Giggs was showcasing him. Heck he even wore the #10 shirt.

This is becoming a mind boggling omission at this point and I can't understand why this question isn't being asked by media.

Thanks Flex.  So if I read this correctly, this “payment” is for this game only and there’s no time frame given in when players will receive their promised “payment”.

If that’s the case, what makes this “promise” different than the countless others have failed to materialize from the DJW administration?

Thanks again

People who doh truly understand football (most ah we "analysts") used to get on his back for not scoring, but could never pick up d amount of "indirect" assists Kenwin had in those games we won under Hart, he figured out how to adapt his loose touch  and resorted to neat flicks while dropping deep to create space....Andre and Tony dem to basic to see dem ting, giroud did exactly dat for France....how much goal he score

Fitness work, analysis inspire Warriors.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

The introduction of additional dynamics to the preparation of the T&T senior football team by coach Dennis Lawrence is being seen a major boost ahead of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup in June.

Captain Khaleem Hyland, speaking after the 1-0 defeat to Wales on Wednesday in Wrexham, complimented the work done by English fitness and performance specialist Sam Huggins and performance and match-analyst Kaita Hasegawa of Everton FC.

Aside from the use of the GPS viper pods and heart rate monitors, used by the team, Huggins' approach to the physical preparation of the players has been a welcomed addition to the team. Huggins' role includes, but not limited to, warm-ups, mobility, speed sessions, aerobic sessions, anaerobic sessions, conditioning games, cognitive skill development, hypertrophy sessions, strength sessions, velocity based sessions, agility, hydration monitoring, recovery sessions and postgame training. The list can be bigger or smaller depending on the requirements.

Hasegawa is attached to Everton. He focuses on play patterns, identifying the team and opponents’ strengths and weaknesses, and elaborating reports with facts and videos, including a qualitative interpretation and recommendations.

He also contributes to the game model development. Hasegawa is a vital source of information and knowledge that allows the team to better prepare their training sessions and matches.

“It’s a big impact for us now because we see the guys are moving off the ball and running better. With the exercises Huggins is giving us, we can add two to three more years to our careers. It’s great for the players and for myself also. The team on a whole is better prepared for our matches,” Hyland said.

“The analyst looks at many different points that some may not look at during games and Dennis sits with him and draws a lot of points that help us improve our game. We see the strengths and weaknesses of teams and also of our own team, which contribute to our overall preparation both on and off the field towards the results we want and deserve. Hopefully, we can deliver success in the Gold Cup," the former Racing Genk player said.

Sheldon Bateau also touched on the introductions, saying “It’s been a good addition to our preparation. Dennis has brought some different aspects to the team and you can see improvements in certain areas of our game. It is something we can continue building on to help improve the team. And it is helping us as players because we are a lot more sure of ourselves heading into games knowing what to expect and being more confident in the work we are putting in under Dennis’ leadership and guidance. I think the staff, in general, is putting in the effort to have the team ready for international football,” Bateau said.

Also weighing in was US-based midfielder Kevan George, who said “We have the access to certain things at our clubs and Dennis, who has been exposed to this, now ensures we get it at the national team. It’s great for the players and hopefully, it pays off in the end, which means we as players have to fully grasp what is coming our way so that the results can come our way.”

Senior players welcome boost of Match analyst and Fitness performance specialist.
TTFA Media.

The introduction of additional dynamics to the preparation of the Trinidad and Tobago senior men’s team by head coach Dennis Lawrence is being seen a boost by members of the squad as this country looks ahead to the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup in June.

Team captain Khaleem Hyland, speaking following the 1-0 defeat to Wales on Wednesday in Wrexham, complimented the work done by fitness and performance specialist Sam Huggins and performance and match-analyst Kaita Hasegawa of Everton FC.

Aside from the use of the GPS Viper Pods and Heart Rate monitors which is used by the Team, Huggins approach to the physical preparation of the players has been a welcomed addition to the team. Huggins’ role includes but is not limited to warm ups, mobility, speed sessions, aerobic sessions, anaerobic sessions, conditioning games, cognitive skill development, hypertrophy sessions, strength sessions, velocity based sessions, agility, hydration monitoring, recovery sessions and post game training. The list can be bigger or smaller depending on the requirements.Huggins who has worked with Swansea City FC, explained, “The role of fitness coach, sport scientist, strength and conditioning or performance coach can vary from sport to sport, country to country, and even club to club.

“The way in which we (TTFA Senior Men’s) approach the role is directed towards improving our specific game model, which is ultimately ‘how we want to play’.”A game model is far deeper than purely formations and can be broken down into the key and sub principles which are applied to specific moments of the game (attacking organisation, defensive organisation and the transitions between) and this gives us clear direction within our training methodology and can also directs our analysis of performance, which is essential as the game is the ultimate litmus test.

“The Gaffa (Lawrence) has created our specific game model around our key players which we have within the T&T set up, as we look to put them into a framework which highlights their strengths and nullifies the weaknesses as individuals but in essence this more so applies to the team as a whole raising us to a greater level of collective performance,” Huggins continued.

“This allows me to apply the basic or cornerstone principles of physical development and performance with more specificity, a greater effect on our game and the scoreboard.”

Huggins has been the Welsh National Teams Athletic development and physical performance coach for the Boys U-17s, U-19s and the Women’s Senior, U-17 and U-19 teams. He has also served as the Cardiff City FC Assistant Academy Athletic Development Coach from 2008-2010 and Head of Academy Strength and Conditioning from 2010-2012. Between 2014-2017 he worked as Swansea City’s Head of Academy performance.

Huggins also holds a UEFA B license and is a PhD Candidate Football Science at the University of South Wales. He has a Bachelor of Science in Sports Coaching and Performance.

Hasegawa is attached to Everton. His focus is on looking for play patterns, identifying the team and opponents’ strengths and weaknesses, and elaborating reports with facts and videos, including a qualitative interpretation and recommendations. He also contributes to the game model development. Hasegwa is vital source of information and knowledge that allows the team to better prepare their training sessions and matches.

“It’s a big impact for us now because we see the guys are moving off the ball and running better. With the exercises he (Huggins) is giving us can add two to three more years to our careers. It’s great for the players and for myself also. The team on a whole is better prepared for our matches,” Hyland told TTFA Media.

“The analyst looks at many different points that some may not look at during games and Dennis sits with him and draws a lot of points that helps us improve our game. We see the strengths and weaknesses of teams and also of our own team which contributes to our overall preparation both on and off the field towards the results we want and deserve. Hopefully we can deliver success in the Gold Cup. added the former Racing Genk player.

“The team is one family now and everyone is getting along really well. It’s strange to see a national team get along so good because normally everyone is competing for positions but in that everyone has love for each other on and off the pitch. Hopefully we can grow and build on that. We want to make a strong selection for the Gold Cup. The entire staff and management along with the players are all working well together to try to bring success to the team and the country, Hyland added.

Sheldon Bateau also touched on the introductions, saying “It’s been a good addition to our preparation. Dennis has brought some different aspects to the team and you can see improvements in certain areas of our game. It is something we can continue building on to help improve the team. And it is helping us as players because we are lot more sure of ourselves heading into games knowing what to expect and being more confident in the work we are putting in under Dennis’ leadership and guidance. I think the staff in general is putting in the effort to have the team ready for international football,” Bateau said.

Also weighing in was US-based midfielder Kevan George, adding “We have the access to certain things at our clubs and Dennis has been exposed to this and now ensures we get it at the national team. It’s great for the players and hopefully it pays off in the end which means we as players have to fully grasp what is coming our way so that the results can come our way.”
