Comments
T&T Head Coach Terry Fenwick
“Obviously this is a big step forward. I want to kickstart football here in Trinidad and Tobago again and by playing a game against a team of the magnitude of the USA that have got players all over the world now, they’re battering teams within our region…  It’s a big step forward. Maybe too early for us but I wanted to take this on so it’s get us as an organization in line, moving forward because obviously we have got World Cup qualifiers coming  up at the end of March,” Fenwick told TTFA Media on Tuesday following a training session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

“I think the players and everyone else, we need to be operating on a different level. That’s what I am trying to endorse across the board with my players and staff. It’s going to present us with a good chance to have a look at a few players and give ourselves a solid test against a team such as the USA.”
More information on the composition of the T&T squad will be ralayed over the coming days.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS AND GUIDELINES | COVID-19 WARNING

A socially distanced stadium seating manifest has been designed to keep fans in place and within their own parties of four or less, which also includes the following protocols:

• Adequate spacing between the field of play and ticket purchasers has been arranged.
• Each occupied row will have a maximum of two parties (each comprised of four or fewer people), allowing each party to access the aisle closest to its seats without stepping over another party.
• Every party will have at least six feet of space between it and other parties.
• Tickets will not be issued for the first two seats closest to the aisle.
• Reserved seating only, general admission will not be allowed.

Orlando is hosting the first friendly encounter between the teams since 1994. Overall, the United States holds a 19-3-4 record in the series dating back to 1982. In the last meeting, the USMNT recorded its largest ever margin of victory against Trinidad & Tobago with a 6-0 victory before 23,921 at FirstEnergy Stadium to book a spot in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup Quarterfinals.

Trinidad and Tobago’s has had two competitive wins over the US, with the first coming in 2010 World Cup qualifying when T&T came out 2-1 winners in a CONCACAF Semi-final round clash at the Hasely Crawford Stadium through second half goals by Russell Latapy and Dwight Yorke. T&T then completed a 2-1 win in October of 2017 in the final World Cup qualifying match at the Ato Boldon Stadium with Alvin Jones scoring a first half winner.

IN ORLANDO
This will be the USA’s seventh visit to Orlando and the fourth since the opening of Exploria Stadium. In the most recent visit on Nov 15, 2019, Gyasi Zardes grabbed a brace, Jordan Morris tallied a goal and an assist while Aaron Long also scored in the comprehensive 4-1 win victory against Canada. With the win, head coach Gregg Berhalter became the second-fastest coach in USMNT history to reach 10 wins.

This is not a good idea playing the U S A on your 1st game together they better hope the U S A play with a reserve team or else it would be embarrassing .

Holy Firetruck batman - whose brilliant idea was this!' Slaughter- lambs to the wolves.

That would be like us taking on Bangladesh !!!!! Which may prove a challenge too

Start with some low challenging games and lead up to more difficult games as you adjust and make changes- On the other hand this is idea for the USA to take on an understaffed, youthful,  inexperienced out of game shape-squad.

The. Again all this bs is what we paying ah coach 20k USA a month for? We might have well kept Bertille St Claire or Anton Corneal- at least we know expectations of success will beat best minimal.
Well at least I lived to  enjoy 2006!

The road to continued punishment for the defeat in Couva is long, winding, rocky and apparently better if televised.

Nevertheless, I think Fenwick made the correct call here. He is weeks away from the business end of what he is getting paid to do and the timing and the logistics fit. Go brave, go organized. Ignore the cameras. Play with pride. Focus on the bigger picture.

Marvin Phillip is about 50 now?....  :rotfl:

Matthew Woo Ling never even played for a local pro league team farless for a foreign one, he father must be a Chinese association member who have money?.

USA go give we a quick 7 in de first half and then Fenwick go defend for de next half, he go park de buss and then say de team play good.

Adrian Foncette....  :rotfl:

Jamal Jack should be selling breadfruit in Tobago, that's he calling.

Gary Griffith son is a political move maybe.

Shackiel Henry scored plenty goals, in India cricket league.

Jabari Mitchell aim to play in Europe, he ended up jobless..

Michel Poon-Angeron never played pro football in he live.

Denzil Smith is de best blind goalkeeper I ever saw.

Shannon Gomez is injury prone.

Duane Muckette does pass good, but he vision limited and close by, he cah pass more than 5 feet.

Ah have a feeling Fenwick go call back Brent Rahim.

Poon-Angernon is playing regular reserve football and banging on the door of first team football in Argentina - he's good enough. Shackiel Henry is at least scoring goals and getting paid, which is unfortunately becoming rare amongst our strikers.

I think this is a great thing personally. If we get clobbered then so be it, but at least we have a proper challenge before our Guyana game. We aren't going to get easy games in the qualification run, so it's better we find out early where we are and how much work we have to do.

Some of the reactions here are as if they prefer we keep beating up depleted local teams and tiny islands. Challenge is how you improve - anything else breeds complacency.

T&T, USA friendly match in limbo.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

The excitement that engulfed the football fraternity on Tuesday with the announcement of the T&T versus USA friendly match on January 31, has now subsided.

On Thursday afternoon, new US President Joe Biden announced during the signing of ten executive orders, one of which to deal with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which has claimed over 400,000 lives in that country, that a 14-day quarantine period will be mandatory for anyone entering the country.

This means that the highly fancied football clash between the two nations in Orlando Florida, USA will have to be postponed or cancelled.

As the news of the quarantine hit the local football fraternity, new acting general secretary of the T&T Football Association Amiel Mohammed said the Normalisation Committee (NC) will now have to return to the negotiating table with the US football authorities.

Mohammed told Guardian Media Sports soon after the announcement that: "President Biden has just issued his orders, so we will be in communication with our corresponding officials with US football officials to evaluate if and how the new policy affects our planning moving forward and we will update everyone as soon as we get a confirmed position from them."

The match was expected to be used by T&T ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in March, and for the USA- for the Concacaf Nations League Final Four in June, the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July, and the start of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying, which kicks off in September for the host.

According to the order: "Anyone flying to the US will be required to present a negative coronavirus test before departing and quarantine on arrival. In addition to wearing masks, everyone flying to the United States from another country will need to test before they get on that plane, before they depart, and quarantine when they arrive in America," said Biden.

T&T is set to face Guyana in their opening match on March 25. Coincidentally though, the game was expected to be held under strict COVID19 protocols, with a release on Tuesday last stating0- "At the MNT vs. T&T match, fans will be required to wear face coverings at all times while on stadium premises except while actively eating or drinking. A socially distanced stadium seating manifest has been designed to keep fans in place and within their own parties of four or less."

Mohammed further explained that the NC will now have to communicate with US Soccer, saying: "US Soccer has a very detailed and stringent COVID19 plan and COVID-safety plan that the T&T national team would have been subjected too and fully participated in such, but now we will have to have communication with them based on the new development."

Other COVID19 safety precautions that were set for the match include:

• Adequate spacing between the field of play and ticket purchasers has been arranged.

• Each occupied row will have a maximum of two parties (each comprised of four or fewer people), allowing each party to access the aisle closest to its seats without stepping over another party.

• Every party will have at least six feet of space between it and other parties.

• Tickets will not be issued for the first two seats closest to the aisle.

• Reserved seating only, general admission will not be allowed.

• Mobile-only tickets

Concession stands will have cashless payment. No bags, including clear bags, will be allowed. Ticket holders will have a preferred gate to enter the stadium based on their ticket location.

The 23-man national training squad continued their preparation yesterday.

The training squad comprises - Marvin Phillip, Adrian Foncette, Denzil Smith, Justin Garcia, Triston Hodge, Alvin Jones, Josiah Trimmingham, Jelani Peters, Jamal Jack, Daneil Cyrus, Shannon Gomez, Jesse Williams, Michel Poon Angeron, Matthew Woo Ling, Duane Muckette, Hashim Arcia, Justin Sadoo, Gary Griffith III, Jabari Mitchell, Sean Bonval, Shackiel Henry, Brent Sam and Marcus Joseph.

Somehow I'm not finding anything about this 14-day quarantine requirement anywhere. Not in the actual Executive Order itself; not in the CDC guidelines; not on the Trinidad US Embassy website (updated yesterday?) I'll keep looking. Hopefully they're taking care of all the visa/passport issues and have made arrangements for the COVID test for everyone within three days before they fly out.

Update: Someone at CDC told me that a 7-day quarantine is recommended?? I'm sure by now they have spoken to the US Embassy, so there should be something from Fenwick soon?

TTFA says T&T, USA friendly match on.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

The T&T versus USA football match, carded for January 31, will go on as planned.

On the heels of the uncertainty created for the match, caused by an announcement on Thursday by US President Joe Biden that persons entering the United States are subjected to a mandatory 14-day quarantine period, a release from the T&T Football Association yesterday made it clear that the game is on.

According to the release on Friday said: "The TTFA has been in consultation with the US Soccer Federation in light of President Biden's Executive Order on Promoting COVID-19 Safety in Domestic and International Travel in the United States.

US Soccer Federation (USSF), in consultation with relevant Governmental agencies, has communicated that they do not have any concerns with the International Friendly scheduled for January 31st, 2021, and is looking forward to welcoming the T&T Senior Men's Team for Terry Fenwick's international debut as Head coach.

The TTFA thanks the US Soccer Federation for their vigilance in these matters and are happy with the COVID-19 protocol that will be in effect for the game. The protocol was quite extensive, even before the Executive Order was issued with multiple rounds of testing and controls being implemented."

Fenwick, who has fought to secure the international friendly encounter, told Guardian Media Sports on Friday that: "We have had no word from the US to confirm either way. I've not got anything else from the Normalisation Committee on the game, so we are preparing to travel next Thursday. We're putting things in place now and then we will be advised, I am sure within the next 48 hours from the US, whether the game will go ahead or not."

With the T&T team scheduled to spring into action in their first FIFA World Cup qualifying match on March 25 against regional neighbours Guyana away, Fenwick is desperate for action on the field as the bulk of his starting team, is still to be seen.

According to Thursday's executive order by the US president: "Anyone flying to the US will be required to present a negative coronavirus test before departing and quarantine on arrival. In addition to wearing masks, everyone flying to the United States from another country will need to test before they get on that plane, before they depart, and quarantine when they arrive in America."

Fenwick, the former San Juan Jabloteh and Central FC coach said recently that he has identified some 25 players in both the United States and the UK that he intends to use for the qualifiers, because they have been playing regularly, at a decent standard of play, and consistently, compared to the T&T players.

"Unless they move back the qualification game on the 25th of March, our preparation is now, we need to get moving, I need to see the players that are available for T&T, that are playing in the United States, some of which I have not seen yet (10 or 12 of them). I don't know what they will bring to the table, I don't know qualities they will bring over and above what we've already got, and the camp was basically catering for all of that information," Fenwick explained.

The match will be held under strict COVID19 protocols in Orlando Florida and will be followed by a live-in camp in Miami.

Upon the team's return to T&T, the Soca Warriors will finalize their preparation with two friendly matches against Caribbean opposition before their encounter with Guyana.

Meanwhile, the January Camp roster for the United States Men’s National Team just got smaller on Wednesday when the New York City FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson and Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris departed the team camp in Bradenton, Florida, USA.

Johnson has a minor knee strain and would not be fully fit for the match, while, Morris asked to be excused and received permission from head coach Gregg Berhalter. In Morris’ case, his departure has only fueled the speculation that he is off to Swansea City on a loan, as has been reported over the past few days.

That leaves 10 players on the roster for next week’s match, though the remainder of the roster will be filled from the U-23 roster that is also in the joint January Camp. Berhalter will not bring in any replacements.

You are not going to learn anything from a game were you are going to be defending for 90% of the game and you hoping not to get blown out that's just a waste of time it would be better to go and train in Florida for couple weeks and play both Canada and U S A so you can better evaluate players.

please, i don't even know why this liability is still on the team. this man had a very good outing and showed good signs of being a top defender when we went to the cold cup in 2013, but after that he just fell right off, typical of our trini players.

guys that was showing tremendous potential like pelter, guerra, kenwin, jovin, winchester, brito and mikel william just made an about turn and start slacking off instead of stepping up.

i was so overjoyed when levi garcia played his first international and came off the bench and scored a brace. i was relieved to know that we could actually produce another player with the caliber of a dwight york, but only for the lad to strike out in every single match there after, never to see the back of the net again.

like i said previously, keep jovin, molino garcia and maybe hyland and send the rest of these skylarkers packing. the add absolutely no value to the team, get rid.

Would love to hear some updates on this

What screening/quarantine process would the players and staff have to go through to make this game happen?
It's 7 days away as it is...

They should be travelling to Orlando like tomorrow? no?
and hoping some magic happens and the Visas are in order...

No rab. Just curious for more thorough updates.
Hopefully Sean Fuentes and the team can inform the public tom.

i don't understand why some people criticizing us playing the US because "we go get pulverize". If we had made arrangements with a Caribbean team, "We cyah get a better opponent". If the team get pulverized, so what ? This is a friendly. What do you want Fenwick to do ? We asking for the TTFA to do something. Now they do something, and allyuh complaining.

Yes, I am glad for any good U-23 player who made the team. I was clamouring for this Sadoo yute. I just hope he makes the best of a real trying situation. I would have real like to see Papi Emmanuel on that team. But I do wonder about the strength of our mid-field though.

Fenwick accepts difficult USA challenge.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

'Bring It On', has been the call by national coach Terry Fenwick to his United States of America (USA) counterparts when the two football teams meet in an international friendly encounter on Sunday at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida, USA from 8 pm.

The match will serve as preparation for both teams ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, as well as the CONCACAF Nations League. But despite the similarities on the field for the next few months, however, Fenwick's task will be much more severe, having to initiate the start of a non-functional T&T Pro and Super Leagues, while at the same, attempt to get the Soca Warriors back on the world map where football is concerned.

The Soca Warriors will be without the experience services of midfielders Kevin Molino and Joevin Jones, both of who have opted out.

Last week coach Fenwick had told the media the two players are home on vacation and he respect that since they had a very tough season in the Major Soccer League (MLS).

Realistically, it will be a battle of David versus Goliath, the all familiar song that Fenwick, at a press briefing at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain Couva admitted to yesterday, saying: "We know we will be up against it, but at some stage, T&T has got to get back on the map. We've got to be playing against the best in the region, and that's my intention so let's get us back to where we should be."

The USA has already named a 25-man roster for the match, which came from a list of 12 senior team players and 26 Under-23s who began training on January 9 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Their team will be led by US international striker Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC) and Chris Mueller (Orlando City).

However, Fenwick is yet to name his final travelling team but, like the US, his will be a young one also, and will comprise players whose only form of football action, has been the national team training which started rated. The English-born coach has also identified some 25 players from the UK and the USA, who he told the media yesterday, he is dying to see to determine what quality they may have to add to his squad, ahead of the World Cup qualifiers that starts with a clash against Guyana on March 25.

Despite T&T's young squad, Fenwick has side-stepped the likes of Anguilla for a warm-up, choosing instead the USA as he wants to be taken seriously. He reminded the media that the American players are playing for some of the biggest clubs in the world presently.

Fenwick will pin his hopes on some two or three senior players

The T&T team will leave on Thursday, and yesterday they were set to undergo a COVID-19 test to be followed by a period of quarantine at the Home of Football. The team will travel to Guyana where they will catch an adjoining flight to take them to Miami, USA. And there, they will be taken by bus to the hotel where they will be joined by the overseas-based players.

Dr Mario John, a former QRC goalkeeper will meet the T&T team in the US and will take them through all safety procedures.

Youths to get first preference.
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday).

THE T&T men’s senior football team will be selected by coach Terry Fenwick on Wednesday.

A burst of youthful talent is favoured to dominate the 23-man unit as they gear up for their first international match, in over 13 months, against the USA on January 31, at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

The team complete their two-day quarantine at the Home of Football in Couva, on Wednesday, and depart en route to Orlando on Thursday. They will fly to Guyana and then to Miami. From there, the squad have an over two-hour coach ride to their hotel in Orlando.

“We’re brand new. We’re young. I’ve got two or three players in the squad that give me a little bit of experience and that are older. My starting XI will be quite young. But they’ve been working hard,” Fenwick said before Tuesday’s training session at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

The former English player sees the clash against USA as an important warm-up ahead of the squad’s opening World Cup qualifying match against Guyana on March 25. This game will be T&T’s first since Fenwick replaced Dennis Lawrence as men’s team coach in January 2020.

During his stay in the US, the national coach will link up with several foreign-based T&T players. Although he hasn’t seen them on the training ground, he will use this trip to have some one-on-one time with these players in an effort to find out what qualities they bring to the team.

“I have got a lot of belief and confidence in the young players that we’ve had in the last year. I am a big believer in what you put in is you get out and we’ve worked hard and we’re structured and well organised and we’re better than anything else on the island here and my priority is Guyana on March 26,” he added.

Fenwick sees the USA clash as a “big call” and it serves as his first match at the helm of T&T football. He quelled naysayers who describe his choice of opposition as “too tough” and said this was the chance that young players needed.

Throughout the pandemic and the now buried legal wrangling between FIFA and the TT Football Association during 2020, Fenwick scouted internationally for potentially younger prospects.

Fenwick communicated with over 325 T&T players over the past year and he believes the youth are key to T&T’s return to the competitive circuit.

“Guys that we have training with us on the ground now are the best of the bunch. They’ve done a terrific job. Fitness levels are very good and it’s a much younger squad than T&T have had for quite a while,” he said. The 61-year-old coach hails the US team as probably “the biggest brand in Concacaf football” and was unimpressed with the likes of returning to the competitive stage against lowly Anguilla.

All the players he will select have come through the national youth system and represented at various tournaments. According to him, T&T needs to look at world football, observe its evolution and place more emphasis on the younger bracket of footballers.

He again lamented that football has resumed, under strict covid19 guidelines, in several countries throughout the world, while T&T is yet to make a return. Fenwick pleaded for leniency for domestic football.

“We are still without TT Pro League and Super League football. There’s no football on the ground, not even schools football. It’s been horrible for the last 18 months but the rest of the world has been playing football, and indeed in the rest of the region local leagues are competing, and we’re not doing that in T&T,” he said.

He has, however, recognised 12 UK-based T&T players who cannot yet travel. It is his intent to get them to TT in time for the World Cup qualifiers to create a fusion of much-needed top quality players.

When the squad returns from the US, Fenwick is hoping to have a three-team tournament including two of the teams from the Caribbean region to play on local soil.

“We have to get on our feet again and find our way again. We’re hoping we can come back full of confidence. We know it might be difficult for us but we’ve got to stick together as a team on and off the field of play. We’ve got a wonderful passion and commitment and team spirit going on already and I want us all fighting together for the right reason,” he said.

While he is pleased with the support received so far, Fenwick hit out against those against the national team’s progression.

“We’ve trained all year and the only side that didn’t participate was La Horquetta Rangers that will not allow their players to play with the national team. That is the politicking that we’ve got going on in the background that people out there should know,” he closed.

JUST WHAT WE NEED

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s football team head coach Terry Fenwick described the upcoming friendly against CONCACAF giants USA as just the starting point for himself and his players, hoping such exposure can get them accustomed to handling the big occasion, ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in March.

Fenwick has been at the helm of the national team for just over a year now and, on Sunday, he and the Soca Warriors will have their first taste of action when they take on the USA in Orlando, Florida. The game will be T&T’s first game with Fenwick as head coach and it will also mark the senior men’s team’s first outing in more than a year.

Fenwick took over the reins from Dennis Lawrence in 2019 but there was no football for the senior men’s team in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which is still a concern even with a return of sporting activities in 2021. T&T’s previous international fixture was against Honduras in the CONCACAF Nations League, in Sandro Pedro, in November 2019, which they lost 4-0.

The Soca Warriors will start their World Cup qualifying campaign in March against Guyana and Fenwick indicated that is the focus even as they gear up to face the USA this weekend.

“I have got a lot of belief and confidence in the young players that we’ve had in the last year. I am a big believer in what you put in is what you get out and we’ve worked hard, and we’re structured and well organised and we’re better than anything else on the island here and my priority is Guyana on the 26th of March,” Fenwick told the media ahead of a training session at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, yesterday.

“The USA is a big call. It’s a big starting position. It’s a big first game for me and for many of my players but we need to progress the game and we need to get our guys comfortable with the big occasion and it doesn’t get any bigger than this,” he added.

Fenwick is backing his players to make the most out of the opportunity, stating: “Some will say that we’re thrown these kids under the bus but what an experience it is for them to play their first game against the USA. We knew this was going to be a very big call and this was made thinking let’s get going with something that’s a huge brand.”

He continued: “It’s probably the biggest brand in CONCACAF football. I want our players to be taken seriously, so we’ve side-stepped the likes of Anguilla. I think they have been an embarrassment in the past. We recognise this is not going to be easy. The players we’re playing against are all structured and organised and have been in the national U-17 and U-20 sides and now they’re in the senior team.

“Many of the players who are the top-ranking players in the USA are under 23 and you guys have got to recognise that some of the main players for the USA today are playing for some of the biggest club sides in the world, so these guys have got to be taken seriously,” he pointed out.

Asked of his expectations for the match, Fenwick said he wants to see “something positive”, but noted that, “we’re playing against a top brand, top team... They’ve got excellent players. They’ve got quality in every position. We know we’re up against it but at some stage T&T have got to get back on the map. We’ve got to be playing against the best in the region and that is my intention. It is a big ask,” he conceded,

“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to be organised, structured and have discipline about how we play and how we’re going out to upset them. My starting XI will be quite young…so it’s not going to be easy against the USA, but it is a starting position that I thought will get, not just my players and my staff technically up and running, but behind the scenes, more than everything, we need this game to smell the coffee and get the ball rolling again in T&T and I thought this would be the catalyst to do that.”

The T&T contingent was scheduled to be tested for Covid-19 yesterday before heading into a two-day quarantine at the Home of Football in Couva. They will continue training at the venue before leaving for the USA tomorrow. On arrival, the team will be tested every day during their stay in the US and will train twice a day in Orlando before Sunday’s game. The T&T team return home on February 1 and upon arrival will undergo seven days quarantine at the Home of Football.

Fenwick selects 24-man squad for USA friendly
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Team head coach Terry Fenwick has a selected a 24-man Squad to face the United States in an international friendly at Exploria Stadium in Orlando on Sunday January 31st.

Fenwick has included seven home-based players and 17 overseas-based players for T&T’s first International match of 2021.

Goalkeeper Marvin Phillip and Alvin Jones are the two most capped players in the squad with 78 and 27 appearances respectively.

Among the players earning first time call ups is 22-year-old US-born defender Michael DeShields. He was selected by D.C. United with the fifth overall pick in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft last Thursday. He was United’s second pick in the first round.

Also earning a first call is Canadian-based midfielder/full-back Federico Pena of Canadian Premier League club Valour FC. Pena appeared in six of Valour’s seven games at The Island Games in 2020, filling in at various different roles due to a number of injuries to his teammates.

Pena was born in Port of Spain and moved with his family in 2009 to Winnipeg, where he played much of his youth football. He made a brief trip overseas in 2017 to pursue a career in Europe, spending a year each in the academies of Belgian clubs KAA Gent and Standard Liège, before signing for Valour in April 2019.

Fenwick has also invited US-born player Jonathan Jimenez. The 23-year-old is currently with USL club Rio Grande Valley FC Toros which Jimenez appeared for USL League sides Lakeland Tropics in 2017 and Portland Timbers Under 23s during their 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Former National Under 17 and Under 20 defender Noah Powder who is attached to MLS club Real Salt Lake as well as former National Under 17 player Ajani Fortune of Atlanta United’s Academy have also been called up by Fenwick. All the overseas-based players will join the T&T squad in Orlando.

Northern Ireland-based duo Jesse Williams (18) and Gary Griffith III (18), Fortune (18) and Michel Poon Angeron, age 19, are among the teenagers in the squad.

Some members of the previous 2019 Gold Cup and Nations League squad that are in the current roster for the match include Phillip, goalkeeper Adrian Foncette, Alvin Jones, Duane Muckette, Neveal Hackshaw, Ryan Telfer and Andre Fortune.

Head Coach’s Comments

“It’s a great opportunity and experience for so many young players in Trinidad and Tobago who have not played competitive football for over a year. It’s a chance for them to make a name for themselves in a shop window. It’s a great opportunity for everybody involved,” Fenwick told TTFA Media on Wednesday.

“We have a few players from North America who we know are of a good quality playing in quality leagues but there is nothing like seeing them live and getting the chance to work them a bit on the training pitch. This will be the first time I am meeting them so I am looking forward to this. We have a new guy from Canada and it’s a great opportunity for him and us.

We need players of this calibre on our side. We also recognise that we have some wonderful players in the UK that can’t travel because of the cover but one step at a time we’ll try to fuse them with the quality that we have got on the ground here in Trinidad and Tobago.”

“Going into Orlando we’ll obviously try to prepare as best as possible under the circumstances while we are there a couple days before the match. We’ve had a some sessions here on the ground and it’s a case of putting everything together for a good showing. I have to mention the efforts of the Ministry of National Security, Health, the TTFA and everyone who’s put in the efforts to ensure we can get into our first international match of the year,” Fenwick added.

The team departs at 9:00am on Thursday and will be based in a bubble at the Omni Championsgate hotel. Following the match on January 31st, the team will stay a further two days at Omni before returning home on February 3rd and entering quarantine at the Home of Football in Couva.

They paying a GK coach in Florida by the hour or will Marvin and Foncette be taking turns prepping each other? This doesn't strike me as a match to be cutting corners in the GK department.

Big change of the guard. We are in the Fenwick era now for better or for worse. Expect a hard running disciplined team that can hold its shape.

That is a hard, but necessary 1st match. MLS vs USL/ Unattached.  Nonetheless they will surprise people.

Good luck to the staff and players

There you guys go again calling for players who didn’t make the cut. maybe the coach wants to see who could cut it at this level against a top team in the confederation. who knows maybe he already seen gomez and hodges play against top competition at this level and didn’t see the need to include them in this exercise, but one thing’s for sure coach fenwick ain’t no dummy coach like dennis the menace. he will weed them out quick and in a hurry.

All we need now is a very good goalie, I can’t wait to see who will step in the save us from another stint of goal leaking marvin.

PS. It really angers me that this lad has never kept a clean sheet on a national level conceding 9 goals in the goal cup after only three games, and about 10 goals in the nation’s league. What the attraction with this bloke? he’s a bloody nightmare. get rid.

Agreed. Building a team in these circumstances involves factors other than who can play. This is also why coaches answer questions at media conferences to explain what they are at liberty to explain and the media ask thoughtful questions.

The questions to be asked are not difficult.

There are more Unattached players than what the squad list indicates:

On top of that, Michel Poon-Angeron and Michael DeShields have not played a minute of pro football. Ajani Fortune is an academy player. Telfer hasn't scored a goal since 2019. Peña is not a regular for Valour FC. Carry on!

Half the squad is uncapped, and a further six of them have five or less caps.

  • Marvin Phillip is without a club since July 2020.
  • Duane Muckette is without a club since his contract ended with Memphis 901 FC.
  • Ryan Telfer is without a club since his contract ended with York United.
  • Jamal Jack is without a club since he left CSD Sacachispas by mutual consent earlier this year.
  • Matthew Woo Ling was last played with AC Port of Spain in March 2020. Allyuh really feel he still under contract and getting paid?
  • Sean Bonval last played with Central FC in March 2020. Allyuh really feel he still under contract and getting paid?
  • Andre Fortune is not with North Carolina FC anymore. He is searching for a new club.
  • Jonathan Jiminez is without a club after his contracted ended with RGV Toros.
  • Gary Griffith and Jesse Williams have not signed a contract with Coleraine FC. They may sign one in the future, but as of now, they are not contracted players. If that was the case they would be in Northern Ireland all now.

The boys are waiting on work permits still for NI, I do wonder if their call up is to help there - it would make a significant difference to their chances as they may appeal on the basis of it. Otherwise almost no chance of a work permit as they haven't played senior football and we are too low ranked for u21 appearances to carry them

Would hvae been nice to Joevin and Molino on the squad, would have been less pressure on our defence for sure.

USA vs. Trinidad & Tobago, 2021 friendly: Scouting Trinidad & Tobago
By Brendan Joseph (starsandstripesfc.com)

A busy 2021 opens with a familiar friendly opponent to finish the annual January Camp. The United States Men’s National Team is set to take on Trinidad & Tobago Sunday night at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida. USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter and U-23 head coach Jason Kreis held a joint camp in Bradenton, Florida with a large young group and a smaller MNT roster. After U-23 camp broke last weekend, Berhalter brought a combined group to Orlando for this match. Concerns about cancellation due to the COVID pandemic were assuaged, with the TTFA thanking the USSF “for their vigilance” and “quite extensive protocol.”

The United States has a 19-3-4 all-time record against the Soca Warriors. This is the Caribbean nation’s first match since November 2019, where they lost 4-0 to Honduras in the final round of CONCACAF Nations League Group C. Trinidad is in search of its second World Cup qualification after reaching the group stage in 2006. The country has struggled since then, falling in the 2014 second round and finishing last in two Hexagonals (2010 and 2018).

Trinidad begins the first round of 2022 World Cup qualifying in March, needing to finish first in their group to advance. Their opponents – Saint Kitts and Nevis, Guyana, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas – should be easily dispatched, but there are no guarantees on the road to Qatar. Following a dismal third place finish in the last Nations League, the Soca Warriors must also defeat Montserrat and either Cuba or French Guiana to reach this summer’s Gold Cup.

Trinidad and Tobago is led by Terry Fenwick, who assumed the head coaching role in January 2020. His first official match will be this upcoming friendly. The former England international spent the majority of his career with Queens Park Rangers and Tottenham before moving into management. He is one of the most successful domestic club coaches, managing San Juan Jabloteh and Central FC, winning the TT Pro League four times.

Fenwick called in a tentative, ever-changing 24-player roster for the match against the United States, hopeful that additions would eventually be made from MLS. Six members are domestically based in the TT Pro League and eight compete with clubs in the United States. Several of the invitees have yet to make their senior international debut. The group is described as “the best possible players” that could be gathered due to COVID restrictions.

Goalkeepers (2): Marvin Phillip (Unattached), Adrian Foncette (Police FC)

Defenders (10): Alvin Jones (Unattached), Jesse Williams (Coleraine FC), Justin Garcia (Defence Force), Jamal Jack (Sacachispas), Leland Archer (Charleston Battery), Michael DeShields (DC United), Neveal Hackshaw (Indy Eleven), Josiah Trimmingham (Forward Madison), Noah Powder (Real Salt Lake), Federico Pena (Valour FC)

Midfielders (7): Michel Poon-Angeron (Club Banfield), Matthew Woo Ling (AC Port of Spain), Duane Muckette (Memphis 901 FC), Jabari Mitchell (Police FC), Ajani Fortune Jr (Atlanta United Academy), Jonathan Jimenez (Rio Grande Valley FC Toros), Andre Fortune (North Carolina FC)

Attackers (5): Hashim Arcia (Defence Force), Gary Griffith III (Coleraine FC), Sean Bonval (unattached), Brent Sam (Defence Force), Ryan Telfer (York United FC)

This is an inexperienced Trinidad squad, missing quite a few key players such as Khaleem Hyland, Daneil Cyrus, Kevin Molino, Joevin Jones, and Aubrey David. There currently is not a golden generation of youth, and the overall team is missing the firepower of past years. The new manager has had an entire year to work with his squad, preparing for the upcoming year and “going through 325 players.” According to Wired868, “with local leagues still dormant,” the national team has spent the past year “pummeling makeshift teams across the country… that are unable to train.” The coach received criticism for reportedly crushing opponents by a combined 33-0 margin in four matches, groups that were “asked to use players aged 16-21.”

Fenwick’s preferred lineup is difficult to predict as this is his first match in charge, although the Englishman is known to favor a 4-3-3. He’s described himself as “very flexible tactically“ and prone to “change formations during matches.” The manager will “tailor [his] plans to [the players’] strengths to bring quick success.” Going up against a regional power, Trinidad will likely play the best players to build chemistry in advance of qualifying.

Trinidad has two veteran goalkeepers competing for the number one role. Likely starter Marvin Phillip was with NEROCA F.C. in the I-League and has earned 80 caps with the national team. The 36-year-old played in Trinidad’s most recent match and started all four fixtures at the 2019 Nations League. His competition is Adrian Foncette, a 32-year-old currently with Police FC. American fans should remember the SUNY Albany graduate from his performance in the infamous 2018 World Cup qualifying match that saw the USMNT eliminated from contention.

Charleston Battery defender Leland Archer might make his debut at center back. The 25-year-old has been a regular for the USL Championship side. His partner could be Josiah Trimmingham, a 24-year-old ball-winning defender with Forward Madison FC that is dangerous on set pieces. Alternate options include Jamal Jack, Neveal Hackshaw, and Michael DeShields.

Confident in possession when accurately drilling long passes, Alvin Jones is an automatic selection at right-back. He was a key player in 2019 at the Nations League and Gold Cup. The left-back position appears open, but Noah Powder looks ready to stake his claim. The 22-year-old recently signed a deal with Real Salt Lake for the upcoming 2021 season.

Holding midfielder Andre Fortune has earned two caps with T&T, but he could be a key player during qualifying. He has already made 80 appearances at the club level with the Rochester Rhinos and North Carolina FC. His partner should be Jonathan Jiménez, a Florida native set to make his international debut. Michel Poon-Angeron, under contract with Club Banfield, could receive playing time. The 19-year-old turned heads at domestic camp and was retained for the friendly.

There are some interesting options available at attacking midfielder. Domestically based Hashim Arcia has 11 caps and performed well in recent friendlies. The 32-year-old pushes forward into the box, providing an additional scoring threat and finishing crosses. Both Matthew Woo Ling and Jabari Mitchell are inexperienced but pushing for a role in the program.

The winger position is perhaps the strongest part of this group. Ryan Telfer has earned six caps for Trinidad, scoring three goals. The York United attacker was a key player during the failed Nations League campaign. His wide partner could be Duane Muckette of Memphis 901, a sharp passer who is constantly working without the ball to find open space.

The striker position is a toss-up, but Brent Sam was prolific during Trinidad’s December camp. The Defence Force attacker scored six goals in four matches against the overmatched opponents. At 24, the trudging 6’3” attacker is capable of playing on the wing but at his best when receiving the ball deep in the final third.

The United States should run through this mismatched Trinidad side. The Soca Warriors have not played an official match in over a year due to the COVID pandemic and a seven-week FIFA suspension blocking out two international windows. Fenwick confessed he has yet to see his American-based call-ups on the training ground and noted his opponent’s “renowned, top, excellent players in their side,“ such as Jozy Altidore and Chris Mueller. The manager shared the federation is “taking a big gamble,” and the friendly is “a big step forward, maybe too early.” Once the dam bursts with a single goal, expect more to follow in rapid succession.

The match is scheduled for Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern, 4:00 p.m. Pacific. Viewing options include FOX Sports 1, TUDN, UniMás, and Fubo TV (free trial).

In my view, that match was an inflexion point in our football. I honestly feel that DL would have gone on to deliver more had that match gone our way. And I say that as someone who has critiqued DL. And I say that excluding the fact that KJ wasn't available for that match (a huge blow).

Coaches like Arcia. He's a precise passer of the ball. I don't find him to have demonstrated edge and conviction in his play. Fenwick's taste may insist on some things doh.

about Dennis going on to deliver more, nah mate. in all honesty dennis had us all fooled when in fact it was actually sol campbell and his assistant who had the team well organized and playing constructive football.

I came to that conclusion based on the fact that after sol and his assistant left and went back to England and Dennis was left on his own with stern and Stuart charles picking up the slack, the team stated crumbling and slid to an all time low never winning another game until anguilla.

how could you go from beating the USA with a B.team almost beating mexico in Mexico and giving Costa Rica hell on their home turf, to losing out  to martinique in the nations league and struggling against guyana? that just does not add up, it just doesn’t.

As for those local based players, this would be my measuring stick to gauge these local lads. if you’re 25 yrs old and still playing in the pro league never leaving the country to play any where else, you should not be allowed to play for the national team.

I remember years ago a Mexican coach refused to use players who played in the MLS, he claimed that the league was poor and those players were not up to par, and who could blame him. I think the same criteria hound be used for TT players. you play in a shatty league be local in Asia, then you can’t represent us.

you haven’t kicked a ball all season and can’t make it off the bench, then the same rules apply. we need to challenge these lads to raise the bar on their performance, as it stands they have it way to easy. there must be heavy competition for spots on the team let them earn their pick.

Fenwick adds 8 N/American players to T&T squad; no space for Cyrus and ‘Lobo’.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Senior Team head coach Terry Fenwick introduced three fresh faces into the player pool today as he selected a 24-man squad to face the United States in an international friendly in Orlando on 31 January.

Defenders Michael DeShields and Federico Pena and midfielder Jonathan Jimenez will all join the Soca Warriors set-up for the first time, after being invited to meet the squad in the US. All three are based in North America.

Eighteen-year-old Atlanta United academy player Ajani Fortune, who represented Trinidad and Tobago at the Concacaf 2019 Under-17 Championship, is also in line for his first taste of senior international football along with versatile 22-year-old Real Salt Lake flanker Noah Powder and Charleston Battery defender Leland Archer.

Otherwise, Fenwick recalled Indy Eleven utility player Neveal Hackshaw and York United FC forward Ryan Telfer to strengthen his squad. Hackshaw last represented the Warriors during the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, while Telfer played in Trinidad and Tobago’s Nations League campaign.

They join the likes of Michel Poon-Angeron, Brent Sam, Sean Bonval, Jesse Williams, Jabari Mitchell and Gary Griffith III, who are the uncapped local-based players who kept their place throughout the local screening process.

“We’ve gone through 325 players over the course of 2020,” said Fenwick at a press conference yesterday. “The guys that we have got training with us now are the best of the bunch.”

The players in the provisional Warriors team who missed the final cut include veteran defender Daneil Cyrus, midfielder Justin Sadoo and attacker Marcus ‘Lobo’ Joseph. Cyrus is understood to have a minor groin injury.

US Major League Soccer (MLS) stars Joevin Jones and Kevin Molino both asked not to be considered for the Orlando outing but remain interested to play in the World Cup qualifiers.

There were no players from the Terminix La Horquetta St Ann’s Rangers team, which include talent like Aikim Andrews, Keron Cummings, Isaiah Lee, Keston George, and Kishon Hackshaw. None of the employees from the Pro League outfit attended training and Fenwick hinted that there might be some backroom issues.

Former TTFA presidential candidate Richard Ferguson is managing director at Rangers.

“I don’t know [why they haven’t trained and] I don’t care,” said Fenwick. “We’ve just moved on with kids who want to play for our national side… I’m disappointed with the politics but I won’t get involved with it.”

Fenwick urged the selected players to make the most of the opportunity.

“It’s a chance for them to make a name for themselves in a shop window,” Fenwick told the TTFA Media. “We have a few players from North America who we know are of a good quality, playing in quality leagues—but there is nothing like seeing them live and getting the chance to work them a bit on the training pitch.

“This will be the first time I am meeting them, so I am looking forward to this … We need players of this calibre on our side.”

Fenwick claimed to have another 12 to 14 players in Britain who were unable to join the squad in the US, due to a mandatory quarantine for travellers from the UK. However, he expects them to be involved for the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign, which starts in March.

“We’ll try to fuse them with the quality that we have got on the ground here in Trinidad and Tobago,” he said.

Fenwick also defended the selection of Griffith III, who is a graduate from his Football Factory academy and the son of Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith.

“He and Jesse [Williams] are the only contracted players in the squad […] with Coleraine in Northern Ireland—they’ve competed in the early stages of the [UEFA] Champions League,” said Fenwick. “So they are playing at a good standard and they bring back with them the experiences that they’ve got.

“Most of the players I am coaching right now have done absolutely nothing in football for well over a year … I need people that can compete that are fresh and bright in their mind and structured different to what we have seen on the ground in Trinidad.”

Williams and Griffith III, both former national youth team players, are registered with Northern Ireland club Coleraine FC but do not have work permits and have never played for the team.

The England Football Association considers the Northern Ireland league to be of the same standard as the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League and India I-League, with all three competitions ranked in ‘Band Six’ for work permit applicants—which is two tiers below the United States’ MLS and a step below the domestic game in the likes of Serbia, Slovenia and China.

For Archer and Powder, the senior call-up has been a long time in the works. Archer was a 2020 USL Championship All-Star second-team player, alongside his former National Under-20 teammate, Hackshaw. And Powder, a standout at the national team level, already has four seasons of USL action under his belt.

Facing them is a United States outfit that includes former England Premier League forward Jozy Altidore. Fenwick suggested that his choice of opponent is a sign of the new ambition within the Warriors and mocked his predecessor Dennis Lawrence’s decision to play global minnows, Anguilla, who they routed 15-0.

“This was me thinking let’s get going with something that is a huge brand,” said Fenwick. “I want our players to be taken seriously, so we’ve sidestepped the likes of Anguilla—that I think had been an embarrassment in the past.

“[…] We need to get our guys comfortable with the big occasion, and it doesn’t come much bigger than this. Some may say we’re throwing these guys to the wolves [but] what an experience for them; what an experience playing your first game against the United States of America.

“What we are doing is getting everybody’s attention … This is a big tall order for them, but bring it on.”

Fenwick will travel without assistant coach/goalkeeper coach Kelvin Jack, who was unable to get to game due to a mandatory quarantine period for travellers from the United Kingdom. Jack is expected to join the team in Trinidad next month.

There was a shift in duties within the technical staff otherwise as former St Augustine Secondary coach Adrian Romain was handed the portfolio of team manager. The outgoing team manager, Captain Basil Thompson, was shifted to logistics/safety and compliance manager instead.

The Warriors fly to Miami tomorrow, via Guyana, and should have at least four training sessions under their belts before they face the host nation. They are due to quarantine at the Home of Football in Couva on their return.

AGAINST THE USA

The USA is 19-3-4 against Trinidad and Tobago all-time and has never lost to the island nation on home soil. Sunday’s match is the USMNT’s first friendly match vs. Trinidad since 1994 and just its fifth all-time.

The two nations have some memorable history, with each denying the other of a place in the FIFA World Cup on the final day of qualifying.

According to Greg Berhalter, Jozy Altidore will not take part in tomorrow's match due to picking up a minor strain. This is out of an abundance of caution, especially since an overseas transfer may be in the works.

The problem for J Sadoo is he has to compete with M W Ling to be the playmaker on the team and most coach's  do not use 2 playmakers on a team i have not seen him play but i have seen videos of M W Ling when he played in Malta he can play as a #8 or a #10 he is also good at set pieces so i will have him pulling the strings in my midfield but i don't expect M W Ling to be in TT for to much longer once he is playing on the NT so J Sadoo will get his chance.

sorry, with the lack of quality in midfield, vs usa to boot, I would be surprised if we don't see a 5-4-1 (defense looking to me like our strongest area). I think we could pull off a respectable scoreline 2-0, 3-0 usa and the youths would have gotten a solid 90 mins vs the top of our region. win for everybody involved.

I'd be surprised to see Fenwick play 5 at the back, but I might be showing my ignorance here. 4-5-1 would be my guess, with at least one holding midfielder but maybe 2, with dreams of 4-3-3 on the attack (if 2 holders, one playing as a Volante, i.e. pushing forward in attack - can see Poon-Angernon and Arcia doing that, with Arcia as the volante)

Eve: No second-guessing Soca Warriors today.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

There will be no second-guessing when the T&T Soca Warriors take on the USA in an international friendly encounter from 8 pm on Sunday at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida, USA.

However, there is an expectation that coach Terry Fenwick is likely to use a counter-attacking strategy based on the players selected on his roster ahead of the match, said Angus Eve, a former national coach.

Eve told Guardian Media Sports on Saturday that he fully supports the decisions and choices by the English-born Fenwick, as coaches are prepared to live and die by the decisions they make.

However, he said that the Soca Warriors ranked 12th out 41 Concacaf nations, will face an uphill task coming up against a team they booted out of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

In the absence of the country's key overseas players, like Khaleem Hyland, Joevin Jones, Kevin Molino and Levia Garcia, all of who have said that they are unavailable for the encounter, Fenwick's side which is ranked 103 in the world, is made up of 10 defenders, inclusive of newcomers Federico Pena (Valour FC, Canada), who overlaps regularly down the flank. However, Michael DeShields (DC United, USA), who was expected to play a key defensive role in the match is unavailable because of injury.

Alvin Jones, the player who scored a thunderous right-footed shot from more than 20-yards out during the teams October 10, 2017, Russia 2018 World Cup Qualifying match that gave T&T a 2-1 upset victory at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain Couva, is also in the team for today's contest.

"Most of the players selected are defenders so I would think he would probably play a counter-attacking game which I don't blame him because I probably would have done the same thing," Eve said.

Both teams are in a process of rebuilding with the World Cup Qualifiers, CONCACAF Gold Cup and CONCACAF Nations League tournaments which are right around the corner. T&T is set to open its World Cup campaign against Guyana on March 25. The USA team comprises players from their domestic competition with e couple of guest players, none of whom are marquee standouts.

Eve, a former national captain, explained that because he is unaware of the strengths and weaknesses of more than 80 per cent of the players on the T&T team, he is certain that Fenwick would have done a good job in his selection, having screened over 325 players to arrive at the squad he has chosen, saying, he would have assessed the situation and the team he is going up against before he chose the players he did.

Eve, the coach of Naparima College, said he is also hoping for a good performance and a good result this evening. When the team's last met on June 22 in 2019, the USA came away with a 6-0 win in the Gold Cup tournament in the USA.

The T&T team is expected to return home soon after the match for two more friendly encounters with regional opposition before their opening match against the Guyanese.

Fenwick wants to see how players cope under U.S pressure.
T&T Express Reports.

HEAD COACH of the senior men’s football team Terry Fenwick wants to see how his players handle the pressure of playing a big team when they take on the United States in Orlando this evening.

On the eve of their international friendly with the USA tonight, Fenwick said the decision to play the USA was a deliberate one, meant to force the players to step into the bright lights.

“We could have played Caribbean sides. We could have gone against a smaller team. But I want big focus because it is pressure, mental pressure for our players,” Fenwick told TTFA Media. “I want them to have that experience that knowledge that they have been in front of a crowd—there are four-and-a-half thousand people coming—it is live on television, so there are a lot of things that some of our players have not experienced yet. Again, if you don’t get that experience we can’t ask for anything of them.”

Fenwick seemed to set the expectation bar low, stating that the USA side is well ahead of the Soca Warriors because of their five to seven-year development programmes from the Under-17 level all the way through to the national senior team.

“Their average age is around 22, 23 so they have got very good players, players around Europe today so we can’t ignore,” Fenwick said. “We should recognise and understand the development process is working. They have done a great job, they are more than competitive. We in T&T have got to get on that same streamline. We have got to try and get that development programme. There is nothing as we speak so we have got to get that in place to give our kids a chance.”

Fenwick said the reception from USA Soccer has been first-class and so has been the way the opposition staff and players have accommodated them.

As for the game-plan tonight, Fenwick said he was delighted to get a “fusion” with USA-based players mixing with his locally-based squad.

“The game-plan is to bring them together as quickly as possible,” he said. “The preparation is not really long enough...These kids that we have got don’t get experience if you don’t give them opportunities and that is what this is, it is a big opportunity for the locally-based players and for the guys from the States on a big stage and against the USA to come and do some good for themselves.”

Fenwick conducted two sessions at the Omni Championsgate training pitch yesterday with 23 members of his squad and staff who all returned negative results in four PCR tests, one in Trinidad and three in Orlando since their arrival on Thursday night. However, DC United player Michael Deshields who is coming off an injury will not join the squad for the match.

And in some good news for local fans, the TTFA yesterday announced tonight’s game will be broadcast on local cable network channel WESN Content Capital from 8.25 p.m.

USA match is about experience — Fenwick.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

With less than a month away from T&T's opening FIFA World Cup qualifying clash with Guyana, national coach Terry Fenwick will be hoping for a good result when his team takes on the might of the USA which is ranked 22nd in the world by FIFA, in an international friendly from 8:30 pm on Sunday at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida, USA.

The match will also be a key moment of learning for Fenwick's side which is ranked 103, and playing against the USA for the first time since the team's last met on June 22, 2019 when the USA defeated T&T 6-0 in a Gold Cup match. The English-born coach, in an interview on the eve of the match Sunday's match said he was anything but delighted as he has a fusion of players who haven't even met each other until now.

However, despite the magnitude of the encounter, it will provide the players with the opportunity to do so for the first time on Sunday. The young T&T team comprises just seven local and 16 foreign-based talents with T&T parentage, most of them only being seen via video footage.

The team's most experienced players are goalkeeper Marvin Phillip and Alvin Jones both of whom have been capped with 78 and 27 appearances respectively.

Among the players earning their first call up are 22-year-old US-born defender Michael DeShields, who was selected by D.C. United with the fifth overall pick in the Major League Soccer Superdraft last Thursday as the team's second pick in the first round but he has been injured out before joining the team which arrived in the US on Thursday.

Also earning a first call is Canadian-based midfielder and full-back Federico Pena of the Canadian Premier League club Valour FC. Pena appeared in six of Valour’s seven games at The Island Games in 2020, filling in at various and different roles due to several injuries to his teammates.

The team also had three Covid-19 tests, one in T&T on Tuesday and two in the US to date, and all came back negative, which gives the coach a full compliment to make his final selection which he will announce just be kick-off.

Despite the challenges, Fenwick opted for a match against a side that is 5-7 years of development ahead of his, as he believes it will provide mental toughness for his charges. "We could have opted to played Caribbean sides, we could have played smaller teams. I want a big focus because it's pressure, mental pressure for our players. I want them to have that experience, that knowledge that they've been in front of a crowd. It will be four and a half thousand people coming, it's live on television, so there're some things that our players haven't experienced yet," Fenwick explained.

The US which is second in Concacaf only to Mexico, the top-ranked team, will be led in attack by influential strikers Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC) and Chris Mueller (Orlando City), both of whom will provide experience to an otherwise inexperienced team which came from a list of 12 senior team players and 26 Under-23s who began training on January 9 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, USA.

However, having been a part of a comprehensive development programme for the past five years, the Americans may be keen on exacting revenge on their T&T counterparts, who defeated them 2-1 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in a World Cup qualifier on October 10, 2017, which helped eliminated them for the 2018 tournament in Russia.

According to Fenwick, a former England World Cup player, whose team is ranked 12th out of 41 countries in Concacaf, "We have got to recognize that these guys are well in front of us. They have had 5-7 years development so they are very competitive at the under-17, under-20 and all their national teams have an average age of 22 to 23. so they've got very good players. They've got players all over Europe today and we can't ignore that. We, in T&T, have got to get on that same streamline, we have got to get that development programme in place."

See nothing has changed with our football.

Unfit. Speed of play still not up to international level. Lack of tactical understanding when defending in small groups. Basic decision making poor. Fugly kit (would have been better in red).

This is completely embarrassing. Poor coaching and overall administration on show here. We can’t even string 3 passes at a time . We got this game because Serbia could not play US because of COVID restrictions. Fenwick needs to make 5 changes at halftime .

It’s like we have 8 defenders.,.that are always second to the ball. #3 Pena is non existent...Mr. Tactician Terry, I really hope he could Atleast put together a better defense come second half...and a holding midfield would be nice as well. Pena is the only player who completed a pass in the first half. And had a through ball too on the right side. But he does not look like a defender.

On defense, we are dropping back but somehow not marking and still giving the opposition a lot of space in and around the area. Not tracking any runs.

Pressure

i have been watching this team for the better part of 30 years, and this is by far the worst performance that i've ever seen bar none.  and three of the 4 goals were the keeper's fault, he's just as dumb as marvin, we need a whole new team because none of these guys can ball, in fact that defense can't even make it out of the back. very poor, oh the referee missed quite a few calls that lead to goals . as usual piss poor concacaf bogus officiating.

Jamal Jack and Pena seems like we only good players, Pena have to cover DM and RB.

Alvin Jones is ghost.

Keeper trying but shitty as hell.

Fortune brothers needs a fortune.

T&T defence to slow.

Telfer not interested.

Bonval need to eat plenty roti.

We good for 10.

Ah wish we could get at least 3 passes together.

Fenwick start is interesting to say the least . Is he a third rate UK coach who made it big in the TT pro league against inferior teams or is he our leader for the future? Things that make you go hmmm.... Not great of a sample size but his tactical skills are lacking to say the least. He is definitely outmatched here . He can’t even carry Stephen Hart boots .

ok. so who could we take from this exercise? For me:
Telfer could stay - basic player I'd put him in for a 1st half against the St Kitts Nevis-es of the world, or if you up and holding on to a lead. I think he puts in his effort for the full 90 so I only hope he improve (build some chemistry or something that will give him a better edge).  But if he's our #1 fwd we ent going a dam place this hex.
Muckette could hold down Hyland job. If we can't replace Hyland b/c of lack of depth then I would be fine giving Hyland a more defensive role and having Muckette more creative.
Woo Ling I would give a chance, keep in the mix. Nice touches and with more experience & opportunity can hopefully grow in the next couple years.
Alvin...b/c I've seen him play better -- men ent play competitive in a year, but I think he can do better.
For me the rest could stay home after this Puerto Rico/ Guyana round.
I don't want to see Foncette in goal again for T&T.

losing to an MLS rookie team in such a distasteful manner is really upsetting. this is the legacy of brent sancho and fat boy from moruga, they failed on all level. the only good in this game was the # 10, he was a flicker of light on a dark ocean.

and the lads who ended the game were much better than the ones who started. alvin jones belongs on the bench, in fact the best of them should be coming off the bench. i could only hope we have better quality players in th UK willing to play for us after this major embarrassment.

We didn't need to concede 7. It didn't need to be record setting.

Was shocked that we weren't better organized defensively.

My expectations were not high or even moderate or low. Was just open to seeing how it would be managed. But, I still wanted to see a semblance of uniformity of movement from each line when we didn't have the ball.

Given the lack of prep time with players coming from all points to meet up for the match, some things are a tough ask. It takes a lot of work to ingrain defensive discipline and collective movement, but I still thought that in terms of aesthetics it was hard to ignore how ragged that looked. And, if there isn't collective movement that is orchestrated, it becomes difficult to manage the space you grant the opponent.

Individual errors I expect. It's football. Some players didn't get to show much given the way the match unfolded.

It's time to have a proper regeneration in the GK department and to think about what needs to happen in March.

To my mind, when we go into these encounters that are spiritually meaningful, we need to be mindful of records ... particularly against American opposition that is mindful of every record and each blade of grass. No new record setting lows has to be our mantra.

That said, Foncette was also NOT sharp. He was much less sharp than I would have anticipated even with any absence of competitive football. It almost seems that he didn't expect to be named to the XI.

When I first heard that we were going to play US in a friendly, my initial reaction was, No!!! We are far from ready to take on the US at this time. They will only ramp up the score and rub it in our noses. Reinforce the notion that they are some type of superior foot-balling nation.
But considering that we desperately needed a game from somewhere, and that it wasn’t going to be their full strength team, I conceded that we don’t have much choice.
And that’s just the problem—putting ourselves in the position where we don’t have much choice. We will not go too far as a foot-balling nation living behind the 8 ball.
Not sure how helpful this exercise turned out to be. I’ll watch from a distance

foncete, marvin, jan, ince all had one thing in common, they love to play last stopper. you bloody defender is one on one with the bloke, for christ sake why the f**k are you running out to challenge the attacker and missing the ball all entirely, these keepers are not even smart.

look at top keepers like keylor navas, luis lopez, andre blake and zack steffan, these guys don't run out unless they get all ball, it's no miracle why these are the top teams in cancacaf, they make sure and KEEP THEIR TEAMS COMPETITIVE because they have players who are dedicated to their craft in and out of goal.

our lads want to party on their off season, splurge drink and go boat rides instead of work on their craft in the of season, their off season is to drink and enjoy the money that they made. it's wine women and song, and football could wait till next season.

when you look at playyers like deceased kobe, carl molone, micheal jordan, steef curry, and larry bird, these men would go on vacation for two weeks and came home and train like maniacs, this while their buddies are out painting the town. there's no miracle why christiano is such a budding player even at the end of his career, that man work his sox off on his off season even at the tail end of his career, that is the difference between winners and losers.

marvin might have broken the record if he was between the sticks. don't fool your fat, foncette is a better goalie than marvin, but bottom line is that they all suck and need to stay far from national duty. these lads don't work hard on their craft and care very little  for football, they only do it because it feeds their family and their silly egos.

by the way that is the absolute worst defense we have ever fielded, i still remember the days of makan hislop, kenyo thomas and aklie edwards, if we thought those guys were bad, these new players weren't even in their class. how bloody sad.

example Tuchel had big hard back man with years of experience doing drills with small ball to improve dey touch and control, we doh even recognize dat plenty ah we "ballers" doh even have basics

Thing is, although GKs retire later, both of them are on their 30s. We should already have had a clear idea of what the succession plan looks like and who the GKs in the plan are. There should be at minimum 2-3 in that category.

my problem with our teams past and present is that when will we recognize that the USA plays the same way every time they play us, they utilize the wings and push numbers into our box putting in cross after cross. they also run rings around us discombobulating our defenders into losing their shape.

it was quite obvious that most of the goals came from passes in the box where a player or two were free and unmarked. the oldest trick in the book and the dummies keep falling for the same tactics over and over again, how bloody embarrassing.

Football is a team sport. And as much as I had hoped for a better game, meaning a narrow loss, we have to be realistic.
1. Fenwick saw several of these guys for the first time on Friday morning.
2. Several of the guys never saw their teammates before Friday morning much less play with them
3. Watching film and talking through strategy is useless without time putting it into practice.
4. The USMNT has been in training in Florida for weeks and many are on the verge of breaking into the first team.
5. None of the members of the TTMNT play at the top level of US Soccer.

From my observation, several of the players in this game will not put on a shirt for TT when other players join the team. Molino, Garcia, Jones (Joevin), hopefully Frenderup, and several others, now overseas, are likely to be in the game against Guyana and in future qualifiers.
Fenwick was right to accept the game as playing pickup games is no way to determine the quality of your team. We will see who are the resilient ones, who uses this beating as a stimulus to work and get better. The weak minded don't deserve to play irrespective of their individual skill.
Give Fenwick some time. He needs it.

The more I think about it the more I come to the realization that Fenwick didn't have a plan.
He had what he had and didn't have. Why then attempt to play a 4-3-3? Why not use this first game to create a defensive blue print for the team especially when you have not had extended practices with the entire team.

Fenwick has a benchmark now, let's see how the team improves. i won't criticize now given the challenges but I agree with MEP, the formation was surprising given the first outing with a newly assembled squad and lack of chemistry.

This ! Then again, maybe that blueprint was made with washable ink... Cause with the players and the way the US started throwing water, everything went down the drain. He obviously misread the players with the little time he had.
Trimmingham definitely was not able, was he hurt or he bun. He wouldn't make my Fete-match team with that speed, and i didn't see nothing else from him, but then again I took a break from the game. Alvin Jones is barely a right back. Pena wasn't ready to face 2 top shape US teamates alone, not sure he could handle one. Dorothy, this ain't the CPL anymore. Jones/Pena switch would have been a better option, not knowing what else we had on the bench. I guess Mr Fenwick didn't either, since he made no changes in the 1st, when we were being over, under,out-runned and gunned.
We have seen Jack and Archer now, they alright.  We have better options for the real games going forward, maybe Archer can make the final 23. Seems we will have to unretire some guys. Thanks for your service, gentlemen.

Trim, boy, try Noom, my 51 year old stopper did, and now he faster than you. Take care of that knee, ease of the weights.
Seriously doh, I hope the guy is ok.  They are young, and they all know now, 'There's plenty more work to be done'.

I would like to comment on the midfield, but we didn't really have one. How the hell US get that freekick and had 2 men in our box free and unmarked. We was marking the fellas in stripes ? Wha jail was dat ?

The loss was embarrassing but necessary. It laid bare the truth of T&T football. We are are at USL level. In fact a good USL team might have beaten these guys last night lol. Adding JJ, Molino, Bateau and Garcia might add some dignity to our losses but it won't change the fact that we have not had a successful development program since 2008.  Since we've refused to do so, this and other thrashings will serve as such into the foreseeable future. The best we can hope for is that some players will be shaken out of their complacency and administration will be shamed into into doing better.

The coach had the wrong starting line up...in the first half no experience in midfield to hold the ball and settle the team...until Hackshaw came on in the second half...Jamal Jack...played his last game in national colors...l would have subbed him...in the first half...he kept getting beat on the left side...l think four of the goals came because of his incompetence...l thought Powder deserved at least 30 min...instead if the 10 he got

Would have parked the bus and worked on defensive solidity...for this game.... 4-3-3 is just as easily 4-5-1 that can be adjusted in transition....I would  sat back and used this game to coach defense "in the field"

This is international football so there is no excuse for the lack of basic tactical understanding the team displayed.

Once the commissioner of police is actively involved in football, only for self interest to buy a place for his son on the team who wasn’t even a school boy standout then we are ALL to blame!!!!

Fenwick is going to feed the masses with tons of excuses about lack of preparation, COVID, the ban but I don’t see with even our full team, how are we going to qualify for a World Cup playing against the A teams of, Mexico, USA, Canada, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Honduras to name a few. I guess only time will tell.

No time to dwell on what we knew would have been the outcome. Even though I was disappointed with the some players basic errors. Get rid of the dead wood from this team that played last night. No need to call names.
Reinforcements should definitely include Ryan Innis (Charlton Athletic), Daniel Phillips (Watford Fc) & Rory Mckenzie (Kilmarnock FC). Add them to Molino, Jones, Bateau, Telfer, Garcia & Powder and we can build from there.

Wasn’t this team in training at the police barracks months before? If so, what was our game plan in attacking, defending and in transition? Fenwick just left players to do as they please! It looks like he surely missed his sidekick Gary on the sidelines to tell him what to do. Hilarious!!

I cannot make sense  out of this game. The team seemed so unprepared that I was left wondering what was the benefits of this game. Was the coach trying some sort of tactical tricks or vetting some local prospects before the big tournaments? None of those seemed the case considering the way the team played. I didn't see any identifiable tactics.

USA picked Trinidad because it is has a good name in CONCACAF but has been declining in recent years and TT accepted to play the sacrificial lamb role. Well, sometime teams accept this role when they need money to support their own prep or other activities for their football. But for this game, I doubt money was a factor in deciding to go play this game unprepared

Fenwick that team would have loss to anybody in concacaf. first of all that defense can’t play under pressure. they need too much time on the ball to settle down and the USA did not allow them that luxury and that was highly visible when they used the high press all game putting numbers forward and closing off the angles, making it difficult to pass out the back.

they also dominated possession to the point where they had us chasing the game from start to finish. what I took from that game yesterday is that the defenders that started that game are very poor, and they can’t t hold a candle to cyrus, bateau and the old back line with their many flaws, at least the old back line would have been able to absorb that high press and play out from the back instead of running to the keeper or hoofing it on every possession, very poor defense indeed.

That is an honest interview but one correction thouhg. This USA is NOT the best team in CONCACAF. They looked good because they had very little to worry about in the game. That being said, I don't think it's fair to judge the coach based on that game alone, though.

Also, Foncette wasn't as bad as the scoreline suggests. I saw some positioning issues but believe it or not overall he was not a bad keeper.

Choice to play the USA - Absolutely right to take the game. Always try to play quality teams, its the best way to develop.

I hear what Fenwick is saying in the interview, and we all know about the circumstances these days -- COVID, FIFA Administrative upheaval, no money for staff/players, etc.

...But when you come down to it, we should not be losing 7-0 at this level. I agree with some here that we should have set up tactically better to be more competitive.

I am in full support of Fenwick and his vision, but not off to a good start.

At times in the future, we will play games against world class teams and miss key players due to injury/suspension. And our game plan must always be to have us competitive at the very least.

This is what Leo Beenhakker showed us.
This is what Mourinho mastered.
This is what teams like Crystal Palace do.

We must be aware of our standing in the bigger picture of world football and adjust to suit.

Against Anguilla we can concentrate against getting in behind their fullbacks as priority.
But against better teams, that priority changes.

No matter how unfamiliar you are with the players, to be considered at this level, they are all professionals and should be able to play to a plan. Losses like these, although a learning, can be demoralizing.
And T&T has historically relied on momentum/mentality - start well and we tend to do better.

Eagerly waiting to see the next game/plan moving forward before March.

But hope this is also a very big learning for Fenwick, in addition to the players.

bottom line is that we need to do better before we send our lads out there. We need academies, full stop! we just can’t continue to rely on the SSFL as a pipeline, it is counter productive. We also desperately need a good competitive league with promotion and demotion.

we need to invest in community mini stadiums like we have in the conference league, stadiums that could pack in 5 to 8 thousand people max. they should offer a sport store at the stadium to generate revenue and adequate sponsorship from foreign sporting goods outlets. these things are attainable if we really set our minds and hearts on it, that’s where our focus should be, not going to some darn world tournament when our players could hardly make the one in our own region.

If we hope to compete on the world football stage, we need to see an increased focus on the investment in football infrastructure in TT. Some of the lookout areas:

-Pro league teams should have youth academies set up from U-8 to U18 like in UE and EU and Asia.
-Youth prospects signing academy contracts should not be allowed to play SSFL. Academies compete against other academies.
-Youth prospects in these academies can be signed to move to EU or US teams when they meet signing age requirements.
- The best youths from the club academies will qualify for the TT development academy.
-Primary schools and secondary schools league (SSFL) up to U-14 should be used to secure the talent for the academies
-Strong investment needed in coaching training needed for local community teams.
-Strength and conditioning improvement needed to improve on measurable metrics. These players need to improve on speed, agility, power, strength and stamina. Players need to work on their movements and quickness. This work is normally done in gyms and performance centers. This is very costly and would be available at an academy.
-Diet and nutrition for optimal athletic performance. A professional must not be able to eat whatever they want. This knowledge and education is available at the academy.

You could change coaches every year for the next 10 years and still not be competitive unless you have a development strategy. Time for the TT Developement Academy

How the hell #4 made this team, and was captain? That man is rell shit!! He does not even look like a footballer with his over weight k foot ass. I hear they call him Tank at his club. The man more like a donkey cart. #3 kept getting beat, because he was out of position. #22 need to understand he is a GK and not a stopper. I’ll say it.. he’s shit too! Woo ling came on and did nothing.. Alvin.. well that man needed a run up long like a landing strip to kick a penalty that everyone saw where he was going before he even knew it himself. Muckette is a baller.. nice lil 1 touch and he kept moving in space. His team mates was not doing the same, so his efforts only lasted a few seconds before the US got the ball back. I know we will have better players soon.. just don’t let #4 back on that team ever again.

Three players score twice as U.S. men's opens 2021 with dominant 7-0 victory over T&T.
USSOCCER.COM.

ORLANDO, Fla. (Jan. 31, 2021)—The U.S. Men’s National Team kicked off 2021 with a dominant 7-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago as four players scored and five added assists.

The USA got off to a scorching start and kept up relentless pressure all night as forward Jesus Ferreira helped spark the victory, scoring twice while setting up three other goals. Forwards Paul Arriola and Jonathan Lewis also scored twice, marking the first time since 1993 that three USMNT players scored multiple goals in a single game. Ferreira and Lewis’ goals were their first for the USA and center back Miles Robinson also netted his first international goal.

A youthful U.S. line-up out possessed the Soca Warriors by a wide margin and piled up a 19-2 advantage in shots. On the night, six players earned their first caps: goalkeeper Matt Turner and defender Aaron Herrera started the match while defender George Bello, midfielders Andres Perea and Tanner Tessmann and forward Darly Dike came on as second-half substitutes. Ten players who took the field were age-eligible (born in 1997 or later) for March’s Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship.

The USMNT took very little time to show T&T that it would be a long night as Ferreira set up Lewis for his first U.S. goal less than two minutes after the opening whistle.

The Americans pressed aggressively and played at a pace that Trinidad and Tobago struggled to match, with the USA spending much of the game in their attacking half. An extended spell of possession deep in the final third sparked the second USA goal in the ninth minute as a nice interchange ended in a nifty Ferreira finish, the FC Dallas forward’s first tally of the night.

The USA continued to threaten during the course of the half, keeping the Trinidadian defense on its heels and finding plenty of room to run on the wings. Goalkeeper Adrian Foncette had his hands full but did make a few excellent saves on the night to keep the score down. In the 22nd minute, Ferreira broke free on the run towards goal and then teed up an onrushing Arriola for the veteran winger’s first of the night. Not letting up, the D.C. United forward bagged his brace in the 41st. Arriola has scored three goals in his last two matches and tonight’s were his seventh and eight for the USA.

After the break, midfielder Andres Perea entered the match as a substitute to earn his first cap. The Orlando City SC midfielder was granted a one-time change of association from Colombia to represent the USA just before the USMNT’s January training camp kicked off.

The USA kept its foot on the gas after the break and a flurry of goals extended the American advantage early in the second half. A clinical set piece opened the scoring as captain Aaron Long headed the service back across goal to his center back partner Robinson, who buried a diving header from close range for his first international tally. After opening the scoring early, Lewis also netted in 55th minute, ripping a rocket from 18 yards into the right side of the net. Ferreira added his second to cap the scoring in the 62nd.

Following the three-goal outburst, Berhalter made four changes around the 65th minute mark. Shortly after the mass substitution, Trinidad and Tobago was awarded a penalty kick and Turner had his biggest moment of the night. After not having much work in the opening hour, the debutant goalkeeper dove to his right to make the stop on Alvin Jones’ shot, then pounced on the rebound to avoid any further danger.

It was the first penalty kick saved by a USMNT goalkeeper since Brad Guzan's stop Asamoah Gyan’s spot kick in the USA's 2-1 friendly win against Ghana on July 1, 2017 in East Hartford, Conn.

The USMNT will return to action during the March international window. The U-23 USMNT will compete at the Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship from March 18-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN

USA – Jonathan Lewis (Jesus Ferreira), 2nd minute: The USMNT got on the board early as Ferreira ran onto a pass into the left side of the penalty area, beating onrushing Trinidad goalkeeper Adrian Foncette to the ball and then touched it away from him. As Foncette tried to recover back into the goal mouth, Ferreira spun to face the middle of the field and calmly rolled a pass into the path of Lewis, who one-timed it to the left side of the net. USA 1, TRI 0.

USA – Jesus Ferreira (Sam Vines), 9th minute: Trinidad & Tobago had trouble clearing their defensive third and midfielder Kellyn Acosta poked the ball away from a Soca Warrior to maintain possession. The USA then worked the ball around from right to left and Lewis received the ball inside the penalty area. Vines made an overlapping run deep into the left side of the penalty area and Lewis played him a perfectly weighted pass. Vines then drove to the end line and cut back a cross to Ferreira, who was lurking near inside the six-yard box and he volleyed it home just inside the left post first U.S. goal. USA 2, TRI 0.

USA – Paul Arriola (Jesus Ferreira), 22nd minute: Breaking free down the right wing, Ferreira raced into the Trinidad penalty area, maneuvering around one defender before patiently laying a short pass off for the late-arriving Arriola. The charging winger launched a hard-hit shot past the Foncette inside the left post for his seventh international goal. USA 3, TRI 0.

USA – Paul Arriola (Jesus Ferreira), 41st minute: As Trinidad attempted to clear a ball in the air, an errant header went right to Ferreira, who put Arriola on towards goal with a strong header of his own. The D.C. United forward got inside his marking defender, took a touch, and rocketed a shot from the top of the box. Foncette got a hand on it, but it ended up in the top right corner of the net. USA 4, TRI 0.

USA – Miles Robinson (Aaron Long), 52nd minute: On a night with limited set-piece opportunities, the USA executed superbly to open the second-half scoring. From the right side of the field, Kellyn Acosta swung in a ball to the far side of the six-yard box, where Long stood unmarked. He headed it across the goalmouth to Robinson and his diving header from close range was good for his first international goal. USA 5, TRI 0.

USA – Jonathan Lewis (Kellyn Acosta), 55th minute: From just behind the midfield line, Acosta bombed a ball downfield to Lewis streaking down the left wing. The Colorado Rapids forward dribbled to the 18-yard line before launching a shot between two defenders to the far top corner. USA 6, TRI 0

USA – Jesus Ferreira (Paul Arriola), 62nd minute: Another booming pass teed up the USA’s final goal of the evening. From near the half-line, Jackson Yueill sent a weakside pass to Arriola on the right wing. He centered it for Ferreira near the top of the box and he dribbled towards the penalty spot before sending a hard-hit shot into the back of the net. USA 7, TRI 0

ADDITIONAL NOTES

- Tonight’s match marked the first time that the USA has tallied six or more goals in three consecutive matches. The USMNT topped El Salvador 6-0 in December and beat Panama 6-2 in November.

- With tonight’s goals from Jonathan Lewis, Jesus Ferreira and Miles Robinson, the USMNT has had three first-time scorers in each of its last three matches. Brenden Aaronson, Ayo Akinola and Chris Mueller netted vs. El Salvador in Dec. and Nicolas Gioacchini, Gio Reyna and Sebastian Soto scored against Panama in Nov.

- Tonight marked the first time that three players have scored multiple goals in a single match for the USMNT since Nov. 14, 1993, when Mark Chung, Dominic Kinnear and Joe Max-Moore all bagged braces in a 8-1 victory over the Cayman Islands in Mission Viejo, Calif.

- The USMNT improves to 20-3-4 all-time vs. Trinidad & Tobago and 14-0-1 in home matches.

- The USMNT is riding a seven-game unbeaten run (6-0-1), a stretch that dates back to the USA’s 4-1 defeat of Canada on Nov. 15, 2019, in Orlando. The current streak is the longest under Berhalter.

- Today’s Starting XI had an average age of 24 years and 246 days and averaged ten caps per player.

- With six international debuts on the night, 42 players have earned their first cap under head coach Gregg Berhalter, the most of any modern-era USMNT head coach through 23 games.

Fenwick: I expected more from foreign-based footballers.
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Newsday).

T&T men's senior football coach Terry Fenwick said he expected more from the foreign-based players in the international friendly against the US in which T&T suffered a 7-0 drubbing at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday.

T&T, playing under Fenwick for the first time, were no match for the US.

Jonathan Lewis, Jesus Ferreira and Paul Arriola each scored two goals apiece to lead the way for the US. Miles Robinson also got his name on the scoresheet with a header.

T&T were on the back foot from the opening whistle and at halftime US had opened up a 4-0 advantage, before adding three more in the second half.

Trailing 7-0, T&T had an opportunity to score from the penalty spot, but Alvin Jones failed to convert in the 66th minute.

It was the first time T&T had played a competitive match in over a year, since Fenwick took over in January 2020. The covid19 pandemic and the feud between the TT Football Association and FIFA led to no football for T&T in 2020.

T&T fielded mostly foreign-based players in the first half, who had been playing more consistently than the local-based players. Fenwick said he expected more from them.

"I had six players start the game that I had not seen before. I have seen them on YouTube and (used) other information I had collected from them. They are playing in decent leagues (and) I expected more, I expected better. We just did not perform. It was like the occasion was too much."

Fenwick will be hoping to have more seasoned campaigners available such as Kevin Molino, Joevin Jones, Khaleem Hyland and Levi Garcia when the Concacaf World Cup qualifiers kick off in March.

T&T will face Guyana in its opening match on March 25.

listen to the rubbish this idiot is pushing, local vs foreign based. that’s all he got from the game, I thought we was supposed to be a team? this is exactly the sentiments that I alluded to in an earlier post, the egomania amongst our local football fraternity is an ever impending doom on the growth and developement of the game on the twin islands.

years ago before there were any such thing as local vs foreign there was north vs south vs tobago. The southern players would cry about being undermined by coaches who favored northern players, and Tobagonians would complain how their players are being marginalized and overlooked for trinidad born players. now in the 21st century it’s local vs foreign based. when would this divisive nonsense end?? aren’t we supposed to be one bloody team?

That is an honest interview but one correction thouhg. This USA is NOT the best team in CONCACAF. They looked good because they had very little to worry about in the game. That being said, I don't think it's fair to judge the coach based on that game alone, though.

Also, Foncette wasn't as bad as the scoreline suggests. I saw some positioning issues but believe it or not overall he was not a bad keeper.

He definitely was not as bad as the scoreline, but that's not the benchmark. As for the diagnosis I don't agree that it was merely positional.

Fenwick confused leadership and projections of leadership with ballership. All deer are deer, but a deer in the headlights is likely a dead deer.

Would have parked the bus and worked on defensive solidity...for this game.... 4-3-3 is just as easily 4-5-1 that can be adjusted in transition....I would  sat back and used this game to coach defense "in the field"

That's a sophisticated perspective. BUT, it still needs to be trained. And whether it collapses into an effective 4-5-1 depends on the distances involved and location on the pitch.

Just for discussion's sake though, a way to circumvent the problem is to go 'halfway' in both directions and form another line. That too needs coordination regarding who and when. The mere system itself is not the solution.

Anyway, as things were last night, 5 players stretched across the width of the field would not have disrupted the US. The issues were fundamental.

He is a T&T-based coach. Quite naturally that renders him an advocate for local players. And it's his place to advocate and to shed light on those players and their qualities. Coaches like Eve and Cooper are important cogs in the ecosystem. And that's also what was at play in the old days. You think Edgar Vidale wasn't going to lean on a player from his neck of the woods if he had observed that player intimately?

What I want to know is what advice Eve has for Sadoo.

Anyway, I don't think Eve is being out ah timing. Fenwick gambled. Some coaches don't gamble their reps. Fenwick had a lot of in-built insurance to geh way with this gamble.

That's answere is predicated on whether or not we could even beat Anguilla with this current squad.  As a hyperbole, I am calling on a game versus Anguilla so it builds momentum rather than  suffer football suicide  or massacre

i understand all that, but the point is......sigh...all he got from the game is that we didn't have enough local players ? :pissedoff: how bloody foolish. why should he use players who didn't kick a ball all season?

regardless of how much training they did all year the local players were not match fit, and these USL players just finished their season and probably was in some sort of self training to preserve their match sharpness.

as any good coach would do, you must play your fittest sharpest players. not to mention that terry had an even better reason to start these foreign based, he has never seen them play and what better reason than to match them with one of the best teams in the region to see what goodies they can bring to the table.

but angus and the other egomaniacs in trinidad are on about the loss like the game somehow meant something, it was a bloody practice match people get over yourselves, the only thing that was damaged here is your egos.

angus eve is a part and parcel of the problem with the silly local mentality, which have our football is in the toilet. people like dexter skeene, brent sancho, david nakid, stern john, dennis lawrence, brian williams, gally cummings, alvin corneal, selby brown, andre baptiste, DJW, jack warner, keith look loy, bertille st claire to name a few, are all part of that silly disruptive mind set, and they are opponents of progress with their inflated egos and their grudging ways, but no ideas.

you're telling me that all these men with the influence they wield in trinidad can't come together and open a football school (not some evening run around, but a real live in 24/7 academy) or come together to create a proper league, one that is competitive and up to standard?

as we speak jamaica is putting out very good competent players who's holding their own with the best in concacaf, and all this was done in the last 5 years. no team in cancacaf regardless of how good they are ever come to play jamaica with a cocky attitude.

they don't rush to close them down in their defensive third or push up into their box in great numbers on offense, they know very well that it could cost them especially on the counter attack. that's because jamaica has put in the work on their league which is now bearing fruit. they have put aside their foolishness for the greater good, so isn't it time we follow suite, come on trinbago it's time to wake up.

I imagine Fenwick is aware of those three you mentioned because Wiki plainly says two of them can represent us...I imagine you know why you included Inniss' name though. Two centre backs and a midfielder. I also think we safely include Muckette's name to this group?

Hmmm! I have wanted to hear an Arnold Corneal perspective on football for a while, but I didn't see it coming on the heels of Sunday.

Looks like the Corneals are circling the wagons and Fenwick and Hadad are in the ring. Must mean Anton is still to be paid and still not integrated into the NC/TTFA structure alternatively ... so kick up dust and lick shots at the bleeding.

NONETHELESS, the parties under attack ambushed themselves. And I think we all figured out that Arnold is absolutely correct about Fenwick wanting to announce himself to the world. Earl Best also sussed that desire.

Will we be able to get to the Guyana match incident free? T&T football is like a minefield of constantly detonating bombs.

I 100% agree with him and Eve. (Although, I thought Eve's comments are ill-timed.

Ever since TF appointment, I adopted a wait and see for myself attitude since I only heard of his success at Jab. and his penchant for discipline along with the many calls to "Give Fenwick a chance"
But listening to his interviews, he has struck a largely superior attitude. He has taken no responsibility for his naive decisions and quick to throw his players under the bus. . .shameful indeed, disrespectful indeed.
Sadly too many T&T nationals will wait till he takes T&T further afield before the sack. And he is going nowhere, the money too sweet and he is in league with the nonsense that is the NC.

I addressed that singular comment as "absolutely correct" because the rest is in evidence. I don't disagree. The one caveat I would tender is that if a NT coach uses his discretion to select an opponent, why malign the administrative side?

I do not know the precise mechanics of how this offer/arrangement came about. What was the decision-making process? Was the Technical Director involved? What was the hierarchy of decision-making? How influential was the TV/ streaming element?

I understand why the match was tempting, but my view has been that we should have scrimmaged. Rotated players in and out and met the observation component maxg stated. Say 30 x 3 [x 2 days] Who knows?, it is also tied to the US training calendar and they had Canada in mind etc.

But, the TV friendly was a step too far. Somehow I feel if KLL was still "TC/TD" and this offer came up, an atomic bomb would have been detonating on the pages of Wired. There would likely have been an internal clash on this and how it was constructed.

apart from not kicking a single ball in a competitive game this past year the coach saw his starting line up for the first time in person 48 hrs before the game and did not have enough time to impart his philosophy on the team.

this is exactly what i alluded to in regard to angus eve. these one time former internationals know very well that we don't have any players with pedigree on both the twin islands. these lads can't control a ball at their feet at top speed without faltering nor can they pass the ball well under pressure, it's quite obvious that their technical skills are severely lacking and with good reason, they are not well developed because we don't have any academies of any quality.

two years ago i attended a game in arima, after the game i mentioned to an old class mate the need for proper developmental programs, a bloke who was listening in took major offense to my objection being very abusive claimed that there are quite a few academies in trinidad and i should shut up,

so i decided to visit an academy in central, and low and behold it was an after school program teaching kids the basics of football and some drills on a busted pitch. not to mention that i was aghast to see what they were calling an academy.

a true academy is a school that is geared towards academics and football where kids stay from mon-fri and go home on the weekends. they learn the basics all the way to a professional standard of play. when they leave to attend university they are considered pros and can walk onto any team from the conference league to the premiership. that's an academy, not some kiddy evening sessions or weekend drills.

these men are too bloody hypocritical. they sit around and do very little for football. they won't even go out and get their euafa badges, yet they want to coach the children. watching the pro league is like going to a high school game, the standard is beyond poor, yet they complain when the lads underachieve in international tournaments and start throwing blame at the coaches. these apes can't even pick a proper federation president for the greater good for football, yet they complain the most. it's disgusting.

i just wasted an hour watching this rubbish discussion. brian williams started off well but he lost me when he invoked foncette as one of the positives from the game, in fact they all agreed that had it not been for his heroics we would have conceded much more, what a hot steaming load.

i don't know what game they saw but the first and the second goal was totally his fault, he ran out like a lunatic when his defenders were already engaging the attacker, and his best move would have been to drop back and deal with the shot.

i don't know what is with our keepers, but they hate dropping back on their line in defense. when i watch barca i pay very close attention to navas very well, and one of his methods is to stay very close to his goal line.

luis lopez is another goal keeper who plays his goal line very close, and you would never see those guys running out unless their defenders lose control of the situation, and when they do they either get piece of the ball and just enough to interrupt the attack giving their defenders enough time to regroup, our goalies on the othere hand either get rounded or are made to look foolish.

then again what do i expect from people who has high praises for the fat boss. if they could justify not going to the olympics, and buying into that bogus under under15 debacle with staurt charles as some kind of preparation for the future, then i should have known not to expect anything cognizant of these local mad fellows.

i really sorry for trinidad yes. our babies are definitely in the wrongs hands....in every aspect of their existence.

They are crediting Foncette for doing his job. Which is sort of a lowest common denominator salute. He stopped several otherwise likely goals. Undeniable.

That is a separate commentary than the composition of the goals that were conceded.

I am not going to beat up on Foncette, but he made individual errors that were part of the accounting. Not on all the goals.

Nonetheless, framing the accounting exclusively on his shoulders would be wrong.

Clarke was very forthright in his assessments (the only one of which I would engage him on is his comment regarding culture and the use of certain tactics. I disagree.)

I wonder how he would deconstruct Foncette's performance objectively, membership in the goalkeepers union deactivated.

Wish that Q had been asked explicitly.
Title: Trinidad team stepped in to play US after Serbia game fell though
Post by: raj on February 03, 2021, 01:11:16 PM
FROM Stars and Stripe FC:

The United States Men’s National Team will welcome in a familiar foe to conclude January Camp. Today, U.S. Soccer announced that the USMNT will play Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, January 31st at Exploria Stadium in Orlando. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm ET and will be shown on FS1, UniMás, and TUDN.

The USMNT had been rumored to be in discussions with Serbia to play during this year’s January Camp. However, it appears those talks hit a snag, and the Soca Warriors stepped in as the opponent.

The last time the two teams met on the field was the group stage of the 2019 Gold Cup, where the USMNT throttled Trinidad and Tobago 6-0. Braces by Aaron Long and Gyasi Zardes, and goals by Christian Pulisic and Paul Arriola led the United States. The USMNT is 19-3-5 all-time against the Soca Warriors, and they look to begin 2021 with their 20th win against the Caribbean’s southernmost island nation.

“It’s nice after an intensive training camp to get to compete,” USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter said in a statement released by U.S. Soccer. “The guys have been working hard and we welcome the opportunity to play against a regional rival like Trinidad and Tobago.”

Soca ‘not so much’ Warriors? A night to forget.
By Colin Murray (T&T Guardian).

Having spent an enjoyable Sunday afternoon watching the champions of England - Liverpool - and in particular, Mo Salah score for me what could be the goal of the season, I eagerly awaited the clash between the Soca Warriors and the USA later on in the evening.

Now, let me state categorically I did not expect T&T to win the game. I figured a 4-0 loss was the worst-case scenario but 7-0 was embarrassing and totally degrading and coach Terry Fenwick has to stand up and say it is his fault and no one else’s. All great coaches the world over must take responsibility for the results of their teams.

Quite bizarre was the fact that coach Fenwick thought it was a good idea to gamble against the USA. With all due respect to some of our regional neighbours, you can gamble against them but not against a well-drilled, well-oiled unit like the United States.

Even though they played only their domestic players as highly-rated stars like Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams weren’t called in (thankfully) with the game falling outside of a normal FIFA window, they were still able to run all over the Soca Warriors leaving them looking battered and bruised all over the football field.

I felt genuinely sorry for the T&T players because they looked like a ‘pick up’ side for a Sunday evening sweat in the park. How can you start six players that you had not seen before? Instead, relying on observations from YouTube and other information you collected from wherever and whenever. Dear me! I would not like to go shopping with you. You may look at a store and order goods from the outside without doing any quality control yourself.

Come on, Terry, this was unacceptable! You have let T&T down. This was not San Juan Jabloteh or Central FC but the vast majority of the population was looking at the game and from the second minute, even the least interested or enthused football fan knew full well that it was going to be one of those long, disastrous and forgettable nights in the history of T&T football.

You knew what you were getting into when you took this job. You knew the T&T Football Association’s (TTFA) development programme left a lot to be desired but do not talk about the poor concentration of the players. It was your job to ensure they were fully prepared and motivated for the game. They needed to be focused and ready to pour their hearts and souls on the field of play for their country. I just didn’t see that, did you? The first 15 minutes of the game were going to be crucial and the USA waltzed through your team like skiers going downhill and just churning up the snow.

Now, having a supposed game plan in place for the first 15 minutes, I would have thought the defence should have been packed even with five at the back. I have seen you analyse games on television and when the smaller clubs play the top six, the game plan is to get everyone behind the ball, frustrate the opposition and hit them on the counter.

This USA team was quick, they were fit and passed the ball well. As a result, T&T always seemed to be chasing the ball and because the team’s defence was not compact, holes aplenty appeared and the opposition exploited them ruthlessly. When a team is playing against better opposition and this high press is used, if the players cannot play the system, acres of space is found and so the USA was quite literally having a field day.

Important to ask - what happened to the locally-based players that were training for months? Were they not good enough for this game? Was that decision made overnight? Did you suddenly wake up and decide you were going with mostly foreign-based players because they were playing more consistently than the local players through no fault of theirs other than a pandemic?

I would have thought that with all the months of training, you would have been able to analyse what you have locally and supplement that with a few foreign-based players that you would have got scouted; and brought them in to make the squad stronger and better. Are you going to go back to the locally-based players? What will happen to those foreign-based players? Is it fair to discard some of them who only trained with the squad for a mere 48 hours? Some looked unfit which is really unforgivable - if you are a professional athlete, it is your duty to keep yourself active and fit at all times.

Admittedly, T&T looked better in the second half so it is something Fenwick is able to work on but what has he really learned from this game? Thankfully, it is not all doom and gloom as the likes of Levi Garcia, Kevin Molino, Joevin Jones, Khaleem Hyland, Sheldon Bateau, Akeem Garcia and a few others are to come into the squad.

Fenwick has to look fast and get some other quality players up to the standard of those well-established players. Duane Muckette, Neveal Hackshaw and Michel Poon Angeron (whom I remember was a standout for St Mary’s College a few years ago) have some potential at this level, but he has little time to do it. Exercise number one has failed so he needs to look at where his team is going and where he wants them to ultimately be.

Up next for the Soca Warriors is a 2022 World Cup qualifier against Guyana at home on March 26 and Fenwick has a nucleus of players to choose from. As mentioned, his primary objective must be to find a couple of good foreign-based players and actually see them in action before he can make a judgement call and bring them into the fold to join the likes of Hyland etc. He must also give the local players a chance to showcase their talents and get them up to international standard.

For your sake, Mr Fenwick, things can only get better from here but remember your words in January 2020 shortly after you were appointed T&T head coach, “...we’ve got to start playing a style of football that suits the players that we’ve got. We are blessed with some fantastic footballers, but unless you put the footballers together in a system of play that suits them, you lose games”.

I await the change, the system and the winning of games.

mate when last have you been to trinidad? believe me when I tell you that there are people down there who live better than the average englishman. you would not believe the amount of wealth there is on that big island. go down central and you would see mega mansions with swimming pools and expensive cars parked in the back yard. so don’t tell me they can’t afford it.

the reality is that it’s not in their interest because they leave everything in sports up the the government to subsidize. in case you forgot, trinidadians are no longer a sport loving people that’s why I laughed at the fat corneal guy yesterday when he claimed that we are a football loving nation, what utter rubbish.

go to any pro league match and the crowd is scant with a sprinkling of fans. I spoke to a few of my mates on Sunday and asked if we’re getting ready to watch the game and their reply was, what game, is that a football loving nation? If they put the same effort on sports that they put into feting especially carnival productions, football would be king in that nation. no money my ass.

Seeker, the point was that these guys are not good for football if they could credit such a poor display of goal keeping madness with accolades. The reason why europe and North America are so dominant in world football is because they don’t accept mediocrity as a partway to success.

If something is not working well for them they would dissect it and pin point the weakness and not only rectify the problem, but also modify it so that it would be the blue print for the future. we in the third world tend to cover up faults and make excuses for failure just so we could feel good about being failures.

just look at the usa, they lose out on the world cup and 4 years later they’re playing like robots from a super cyborg factory. it’s a strong possibility that they just might win the World Cup in 2022. so until these complaisant parakeets who love the sound of their own voice don’t step away from sports on The Who.e in trinidad, then expect  ore heartache in sports.

PS. I almost fell out of my chair when Clark and cyrus claimed that DJW had a plan for football development by giving Stuart charles the responsibility to groom some under 15s as the crop for the future and Brian Williams agreed. they even praised his decision to abandoned the U23 and the rest of the football programs including the women just so he can concentrate on the U 15,

then I recall those same kids being mauled by venezeula and.....I believe it was panama in a tournament where they had not won a single game or even came close, yet these jokers sat there and thumbs up that charade as a good idea?

this is my sincere opinion and conclusion to our failure or success. our football will remain in trouble and our lads embarrassed all over the world if we don’t rid our football of these vermin masquerading as football ambassadors in trinidad and tobago.

they need to start by schooling these kids in a proper footballing environment with European or American coaching staff with a the proper nutritional, physical and mental program. that’s the only way forward.

BTW foncette was responsible for 4 of the seven goals. the first one he came off his line at the attacker obstructing his defender and pushing him off the play when he should have sat still and allow his defenders to deal with the one single attacker.

the third goal saw him running out again missing the ball completely and getting beat which saw him scrabbling back to an empty net.

the next goal saw him at the top of the six yard box leaving the attacker with tons of option, even a simply chip would have scored, it caught him totally out of position.

Our keepers seem to forget one of the basic rules in goal keeping.... POSITIONING. that could be the difference between a clean sheet and a mauling...aka shaka hislop vs sweden. that game could have turned out way different had it not been for Shaka’s great sense of positioning.

Then 8-1 they got from Jamaica previous to that was a near-mass-extinction event. Then a  6-0 from the U.S. The icing on the cake was a dead last finish in CONCACAF.

Inside Bryan Reynolds' transfer to AS Roma and its long-term impact for FC Dallas | Tom Bogert
https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2021/02/04/inside-bryan-reynolds-transfer-roma-and-its-long-term-impact-fc-dallas-tom-bogert

Suggesting a single event happened both incredibly fast and yet seemed to drag on for a long time should be two mutually exclusive descriptors, two sentiments that cannot co-exist in the same space. Yet it aptly describes the Bryan Reynolds saga that gripped MLS this winter.

That saga eventually ended with the FC Dallas academy product posing with an AS Roma jersey after a club-record transfer. For a move that seemed to come out of nowhere yet refuse to go away, it was a hectic few months for those involved and trying to follow along.

“This deal was a rollercoaster," FCD technical director Andre Zanotta told MLSsoccer.com on Thursday with a laugh. “In the end, we feel very happy that he’s going to such a great club.”

Those around the club and US youth national team circles have long been bullish on Reynolds' talent and potential. That goes without saying, as Dallas inked him to a new four-year contract just before starting right back and USMNT regular Reggie Cannon was transferred to Boavista. They knew he'd be ready for more minutes and given his age, physical metrics and natural attacking technical ability — he was a winger his entire youth career before switching to fullback — it was no surprise he'd catch the eye of European clubs.

But even they didn't know how quickly "catching the eye" would turn into serious phone calls from Europe's biggest clubs, which would turn into a potential eight-figure transfer for a kid who'd made just 15 MLS starts.
“We didn’t expect it to be that fast," Zanotta admitted. "Just six months earlier we sold Reggie Cannon. We were sure we had the replacement in-house, we didn’t need to bring in any other right back because it was the time for Bryan to step up. I had high expectations for him but I didn’t expect after 15 games, all of a sudden he has all these clubs after him.”

Roma were the first to submit an official offer, as reported by MLSsoccer.com in December. While the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan and plenty of others were interested, a clear top three emerged with Roma, Juventus and Club Brugge.

Brugge were the next to submit an offer, something both FCD and Reynolds' camp were intrigued by. Moving to Brugge would give Reynolds a clearer opportunity to consistent playing time as well as European competition. Dallas were interested in a lucrative sell-on clause in addition to the original fee, though that deal never materialized.

While Dallas were close with Roma to agreeing on finances, negotiations between the Italian club and Reynolds did not go well. Roma were still awaiting their new sporting director, Tiago Pinto, to start work on January 1. Talks stopped for a while, Juventus stepped up their chase.

A deal with Juventus would be complicated, though. Clubs in Italy are limited to how many non-European Union players they can sign each season. Juventus didn't have an open slot, meaning he'd have to go another club until the summer before joining Juventus. Cagliari were the first club reported before it was settled on Benevento to be Reynolds' temporary home, should Juventus seal a deal.

Roma didn't have this roster problem. And, with no deal done elsewhere, Roma found common ground with both Dallas and Reynolds' camp to land the player.

“[When] Tiago started in Roma, who started negotiating with the player again," Zanotta said. "That was the issue. On our side was just small details left. In the end, we felt this was the best for us and Bryan. Roma won the race.”

Reynolds was officially unveiled on Monday, which was deadline day in Europe.

“Bryan is such a great kid and a great talent," Zanotta said. "I’m very happy for him, I’m sure he’ll do well there. It’ll be fun to watch him.”

For the second time in as many transfer windows, Dallas will have to replace a player in the US national team pool at right back. Just like after Cannon left and Reynolds stepped in, they're going to look internally first.

“Eddie Munjoma didn’t have any minutes with the first team, but he played at a very good level with North Texas," Zanotta said. "He’ll have his chances. Ryan Hollingshead has shown he can play as a right back, Bressan has played as a right back. Maybe some other young players we can make work to claim that position. I believe we have options in our group to play there and play well. Let’s see, we might not even need to look in the market for a new right back.”

Zanotta said the transfer doesn't totally alter their offseason plans.

“We made almost all the transfers we might do [this winter]," Zanotta said. "Most of the transfers already happened, we’re happy with who we’ve signed.”

Long-lasting impact
Zanotta is no stranger to these types of deals.

The Brazilian previously worked for storied clubs Gremio and Santos, two clubs at the forefront of player development and selling players to Europe. Dallas are on the track, which is why Zanotta felt so comfortable in joining.

“It makes us proud of where we’re going with FC Dallas," Zanotta said. "All these clubs are watching us, watching our players. It’s really good.”

The Reynolds transfer, following the likes of Reggie Cannon (Boavista) and Chris Richards (Bayern Munich) in recent years as well academy product Weston McKennie starring for Juventus, compounds to have a long-lasting, very positive, impact.

“I worked at Santos and Gremio, those are the top two or three academies in Brazil," Zanotta began to explain. "Neymar on one side, Ronaldinho on the other side to just name one for each. When there is interest in a player from Santos or Gremio who is at the same level of another player at a different team, the buying clubs tend to pay more for the player coming from Santos or Gremio. The Santos and Gremio brand adds more value to the transfer when a club wants to buy a player from those teams.

“I’m starting to feel that at Dallas."

In addition to those already starring in Europe, Dallas have a deep collection of current youth internationals in the academy and first team. The price keeps going up for the next talent.

"Obviously not quite the history of Santos, who have 100 years doing this and Pele coming through the academy in the 1950s," Zanotta said, "but with all [former Dallas] players in Europe, the perception from Europe of players coming from FC Dallas is seen differently. They see a stamp of quality. FC Dallas is creating this strong brand, this seal of quality for players. Clubs are willing to invest more because they know the quality of our academy system, the pathway of players through the first team.”

Our off-the-ball marking was woeful.  Anytime a us player passed a ball, our players not in the immediate vicinity of the ball immediately relaxed and gazed at the ball while the us players kept moving around, looking for the next run to make.  Too many times you see our players surprised that a us player managed to find some space in an attacking area, and then we playin catch up when it was usually too late.
That's not a new problem for us, but it was as bad as I have ever seen it in this game.
We really lucky we ent get 10.

Putting things into perspective
By Shaun Fuentes (T&T Guardian)

Even before last Sunday’s international friendly, T&T-born Dr Mario John, an Orlando-based orthopaedic surgeon looked me in the eye and asked, “Man, how have you dealt with this for 20 years?” I looked at him and smiled. I didn’t say much.

This was the first day of the six-day camp at the Omni Championsgate, Orlando and we had more important things to focus on in relation to the upcoming international friendly with the United States.

We were barely 24 hours into our stay and Mario, the FA's chief medical officer for the tour, had already been through much from dealing with players, communicating by the hour with US Soccer to ensure our team was compliant with all the requirements, ensuring our team was receiving everything that had been requested, basically being part of a system to ensure all measures were in place for a national team in the build-up to international football.

Now, remember our team was heading into its first match in over a year and we were welcoming close to a handful of players who were entering our camp for the first time. So you could imagine the challenges were not as few as one would like.

I would give my answer to Mario’s earlier question on the night of the 7-0 loss at Exploria Stadium.

“You learn not to overly despair after suffering a defeat, as heavy as it is, regardless of the circumstances. You reflect, learn from what went wrong, move forward and focus on helping execute a plan to succeed into action. You stand ground.”

I might have sounded confident and less emotional but truth be told, I only got a hang of this maybe 10 to 12 years into my tenure with the national team. I had basically seen it all by then, from faltering in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers to missing out on Gold Cup qualifying after failing at Caribbean Cup level, to losing 5-1 away to Guatemala preceding the heights of beating Bahrain and then holding Sweden 0-0 in Germany, then plummeting again, losing a World Cup qualifier at home to Bermuda, failing to qualify for a Gold Cup until 2013. The list goes on.

I’ve learnt over the years that there are times when it’s not yet right to press the panic button but instead focus on the way forward. For me, the key to dealing with such outcomes lies in the process of effectively reviewing and giving feedback back on the performance. Only then can you formulate the potential solutions.

For this particular game, I think because of the T&T versus USA history and the fact that it was our first international game in so long, the supporter expectation prior to the game had been whipped to fever pitch. And yet, for all the hype and little preparation, we were clearly beaten by a better side. And the backlash has been massive.

I cannot recall there even me half the concerns and dismay expressed when we lost 6-0 to the US in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup where really you would expect the disappointment to be greater due to the prestige and importance of such a competition. It seemed hardly anyone cared back in 2019. But this time has proven to be different.

There were over 300 T&T fans at the match. They whipped up a tailgate affair and we would hear the sounds of the rhythm section as the bus drove into the stadium. It was a welcomed sight and sound for us. But it didn't end there. We were down 4-0 at half time and as Mario and I approached the tunnel leading to the locker room at half time, we were greeted by this man clad in T&T colours belting out the expletives in local palance from the stand right above.

"All ya wasting time," he repeated maybe four times in ten seconds as other players also walked by. It may have been harsh but it demonstrated pain and passion by a T&T national, he wanted better and we had disappointed him.

I kept my face straight and continued walking as upright as possible. After all, I had bags of urine thrown at me and other members of the staff following the 2-1 win over Guatemala in 2016 in one of many colourful episodes.

Though the score was a reality check, it is a reality check that needs to be put into perspective.

For any coach or team going through such an ideal, it is important that the parties involved be in a position to deliver almost everything effectively from planning to preparation and execution, in victory and defeat. “Know thyself”, a Greek maxim says that understanding how you deal with things helps you explain your actions.

Over the years, I found a mechanism for dealing with defeat. It was a process that allowed me to get over the result and move forward to a place where I could think clearly and therefore assess the performance in a balanced, clear and objective manner. This has helped me with my duties and generally how I manage all media relations at the national team level, also when I’ve worked at FIFA and CONCACAF events and even with my family business.

No matter what strategies you put in place, how committed you are, or how much effort you put into something, sometimes you will face a situation where the differences between you and the competition are such that the outcome becomes inevitable. You can only push on despite the circumstances or odds there may be against you.

In sport, there will always be victories and defeats, the highs and the lows. You have to recognise that in every scenario and every situation there are key experiences that you can learn from and draw on in the years to come.

listen to the rubbish this idiot is pushing, local vs foreign based. that’s all he got from the game, I thought we was supposed to be a team? this is exactly the sentiments that I alluded to in an earlier post, the egomania amongst our local football fraternity is an ever impending doom on the growth and developement of the game on the twin islands.

years ago before there were any such thing as local vs foreign there was north vs south vs tobago.

Isn't Angus part of the national program presently? He's the head coach of the U20 ent?
This isnt a good look at all here
Even if he wasn't in the program currently...

I def. rate Angus amongst our local coaches and it's really unfortunate with covid he hasn't gotten the opportunity to carry out his current role.
I just think these comments were poorly timed and unnecessary from within the coaching fraternity

They paying a GK coach in Florida by the hour or will Marvin and Foncette be taking turns prepping each other? This doesn't strike me as a match to be cutting corners in the GK department.

So what happened? How did this play out?

Old school ways.

Not valuing the importance of a GK coach.
Ok, Kelvin Jack was unavailable. So what about the other GK coaches in the program??

Poor judgement on this one.
they probably trained themselves based on their experience.

Remember who their boss was....

and Clark is a known DJW "groupie" thru all the drama during his tenure

Epic fail on first match
T&T Newsday

TO RECALL a loss as punishing as the one the national senior men's football team experienced on January 31, you'd have to go back two decades to the Azteca Stadium on October 8, 2000, when the Mexican team overwhelmed a second-string T&T squad seven-nil.

In the wake of that humiliation, there was talk of not having enough time to acclimatise to the venue, which is more than 7,000 feet above sea level.

Teasing apart the reasons for the crushing defeat of the first team assembled by coach Terry Fenwick last week demands more fine-tuned contemplation.

It was a match of firsts. A first for Mr Fenwick as national coach. The first assembly of a new team, heavily weighted with new talent trained and largely resident in the US, and local veterans, some at the other end of their career arcs.

The mix never seemed to find the harmony needed to put up a fight against even a second-string US team.

Hanging over the defeat is the parlous state of senior-level football in this country.

It's also impossible to separate the collapse of the team on the field from the nearly constant combativeness within the T&T Football Association over the last two years and the consequent feuding with FIFA that led to a collapse of local football management in 2019.

The administrative debris left behind after that infighting was further crushed by covid19 restrictions, limiting opportunities for team training even as the local football association spun in backroom circles without, apparently, sparing any thought for preparations for the field of play.

And this defeat came during a friendly match meant to test team strategy and play dynamics.

The extent of the failure on the field demands a complete rethinking of team composition, field strategy and the development of winning play and finishing dynamics that were almost completely absent from the Exploria Stadium in Orlando.

T&T will face Guyana in its opening effort at the Concacaf World Cup qualifiers on March 25, but there doesn't seem to be a national team ready to compete in the global competition.

The week before the match, Mr Fenwick described it as "a great opportunity and experience for so many young players in T&T who have not played competitive football for over a year."

Unfortunately, the Orlando experience has come as a great chastening for the national team, its support staff and Mr Fenwick.

What the new coach needs now is time to work with his new team, clearly more than he's had so far.

Is the TTFA up to creating that environment in T&T's current circumstances? The organisation's fractured state doesn't offer much hope of an organised, effective response.

Lessons in Covid-19 return to play protocols for T&T.
By Shaun Fuentes (T&T Guardian).

Officials of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) received first-hand experience and knowledge on the operations of national teams in international football in a Covid-19 world in collaboration with the United States Soccer Federation during the January training camp and international match which was played on Jnaury 31 in Orlando, Florida, USA.

The T&T delegation entered the camp with Orlando-based orthopaedic surgeon Mario John as its chief medical officer and sports medicine doctor Akash Dhanai as its team doctor and along with other members of the technical staff, they were constantly liaising with members of the US Soccer delegation and medical staff on Covid-19 Return to Play protocols and best practices. US Soccer set up a dedicated clinic at the Omni Championsgate facility in Orlando which dealt specifically with testing and medical services for members of both delegations over the five days.

The Covid-19 handbook presented to the T&T delegation provided specific information on guiding principles; medical protocols; travel and hotel; and training protocols. The guidelines were created using FIFA's Covid-19 tool and published documents as well as the Centers for Disease and World Health Organization guidelines. These guidelines are all applicable for international football at the elite level.

What officials of the Senior Men's team received throughout the recent camp was proper guidance and required protocols for medical testing and screening, athlete and staff care, hotel and travel operations, training protocols, game operations and visiting and hosting team as well as match officials protocols.

The foundation that was needed for the success of those protocols included aggressive testing; behaviour compliance; social distancing; correct and constant use of PPE gear; hygiene practices and contact tracing. At the end of the stay, these protocols proved to be successful as both delegations departing the venue without anyone contracting the virus.

“These standard of care and best practices as well as evidence-based decision making, are a reflection of the advances made in proper return to play protocols. US Soccer is collaborating with various stakeholders daily such as the Centre for Disease Control, standardising testing across the board to ensure sport takes place in the safest of environments without putting people at risk of contracting Covid. This is all data-driven,” John said.

Throughout the stay, all of us as members of the delegation had a designated occupancy space for all meals, team meetings and transportation via the team bus when required. All members routinely received point of care rapid and PCR testing. Meals were individually packaged and served until the PCR results were returned the next day following the team's arrival at the facility on the night of January 28th. Limited pod training with groups of 4-5 was mandatory for the first session on January 29th,

US football also introduced The Play On Pledge which is a powerful and unifying “call to action,” providing a foundation and opportunity for coaches, teams, players and communities to proactively affirm their commitment to health and safety during this challenging time. The Pledge enables members of the broad football community in the US to come together as one, in respect for the sport, each other and themselves.

US football Chief Medical Officer George Chiampas later relayed that as hosts, his organization was satisfied with the conduct of the T&T delegation. He highlighted that the events of the camp showed just how much can be accomplished when all parties concerned work towards a collective and shared goal.

Dr John, who was also the T&T team doctor during the 2007 FIFA Under 17 Men's World Cup in South Korea, commended the T&T staff and players for coming through the period without issues.

"We had a fairly extensive and rigorous schooling in terms of maintaining covid protocols throughout our stay. It became a part of the culture for our players and staff members. They would wear their masks, no handshakes etc and I was very proud of the boys for their discipline throughout the camp. It is very difficult to stay in a confined bubble for such a period. They asked the necessary questions and we had no problems concerning a breach of protocols," said John

It's a step in the right direction and it is something these boys will take back to their communities. It was a lesson in public health for everyone and it is a good example for the nation particularly as we look to start hosting international matches on home soil," added the Howard University and Queen's Royal College graduate.

Players to receive fees for US match this week.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

Players on the country’s senior national football team will finally receive match fees for the USA match, this week.

Team captain Khaleem Hyland revealed this yesterday, almost two months after the January 31 encounter in which the T&T team was demolished 0-7 by the USA in an international friendly clash in Orlando, Florida in the United States.

Hyland, a defensive midfielder who expected to join the T&T team in the Dominican Republic from his Saudi Arabian club Al-Batin Football Club, said he did not want to reveal the amount agreed upon for the players, only saying it was a decent amount.

Hyland is among a players’ committee which has been negotiating for the rights and privileges of the players on the team. Guardian Media Sports were reliably informed that the amount for the US match ranges from US$500 to US$1,000, dependant on seniority.

That amount is expected to be increased exponentially for the World Cup Qualifying campaign which starts on March 25 with the opening match against Guyana in the Dominican Republic.

Guardian Media Sports was told that after the US match, the players requested an increased in their match-fees from US$1,000 to US$4,000, which troubled the FIFA-appointed Normalisation Committee and his chairman Robert Hadad.

Yesterday, however, Hyland confirmed that an agreement was reached between the parties but he was not at liberty to speak on it.

The T&T players went into camp yesterday, a day after they edged T&T Pro League campaigners Defence Force 1-0 in a warm-up match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain. The lone item came off the boot of Reon Moore in the 80th minute.

The players and staff will spend a two-day quarantine period before they wing-out tomorrow (on Thursday) for the game venue in the Dominican Republic on a chartered flight.

Hyland called for total support for his team, in a move to repair the nation from the hurt, negativity and pain caused by the spate of crime in recent times.

“I want the public to believe. It’s not only the players here but an entire country. Each one help one. With the current crime situation in the country, we need to do something positive by winning this game, and give people some hope,” Hyland said.

Despite the recent concern of tension in the team, the midfielder said he is confident that they can pull off a win.

“It will not be an easy match but I feel we have a good chance, as we will do all and everything that we have to do, to get the right result.”

The Soca Warriors are in Group F alongside Guyana, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands and St Kitts/Nevis. Only the top team will progress from the group at the play-off.

Hyland also called for more to be done by the powers that be, to ensure that the team gets to play at home for its next home match of the Qualifiers, saying while the Dominican Republic will be the venue for their coming home game, it is not their home and every team will be hoping to capitalise on their home-game advantage for the Qualifiers as every point is important.

1. That debacle in Florida provided a definition of why performance-related incentives and performance-related base pay tied to subsequent matches are important.

2. It isn't difficult to see why that would be troubling.

Presumably the $4,000 was presented to trigger negotiations as opposed to being a serious figure at this stage of the football reality show?

Supposed the players did exactly as to the extent of their instructions. If your boss put y'all to work as a team, some fellas not really up to par, but you all do exactly as the boss instructed, is it the workers fault the end product wasn't up to a satisfied quality. If the workers did their best job with the info given, shouldn't they be paid ? Did the Manager/business lose funds because of the outcome or they made the same regardless of the outcome ? What the workers should have done was negotiate their payment in advance, with bonuses based on result of work, as they might be doing now. Maybe they need a workers union to negotiate set fees. Don't see how they negotiating after the fact doh, unless they organizing for the future.  I always thought this was already done. If it was, then we could only be talking going forward.
