Angus Eve: Bolivia friendly is valuable practice for Soca Warriors
T&T Newsday

TRINIDAD and Tobago senior men’s football coach Angus Eve said the international friendly against Bolivia will give his team “a much needed run out” as his players are lacking match time under their belts.

A T&T Football Association (TTFA) media release on Wednesday said T&T “will open their 2022 account with an international friendly away to Bolivia on January 21 at the Estadio Olimpico Patrio in Sucre, at 5 pm.

“The match, though being played outside of the FIFA international window, is expected to provide valuable match practise for the senior team as head coach Angus Eve gears towards Concacaf Nations League qualifying later this year.”

Bolivia will also use the encounter as preparation for back-to-back South American World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Chile on January 28 and February 2.

The international friendly is being hosted in conjunction with Global Sport.

Commenting on the upcoming exercise, Eve emphasised the value of the match at this period in the team’s programme.

“It’s probably coming a little bit too early for us because we have not been playing football, but it is an opportunity we had to take to give players a bit of experience because as you know the last three (FIFA international) windows we were not able to play with all the stuff that is going on behind the scenes.”

The normalisation committee, now in charge of running the TTFA, has been trying to reduce the massive debt facing the local football body.

“Now we have gone into a new year and things hopefully looking brighter with the FA and they have gotten this game for us and we just could not say no,” Eve said.

“This is an opportunity to give the players a much needed run out and to have us playing football again at an international level.”

Eve believes experienced players like captain Khaleem Hyland can be integral members of the squad for the 2026 World Cup once they “take care of their bodies.”

T&T have been eliminated from the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Eve is hoping to play international friendlies in every FIFA international window in 2022.

On another platform, I read comments attributed to the NT coach.

Among them, ah see there is mention of not discarding veterans and Portugal and Pepe used as an example and the rationale of veterans modeling and aiding younger players. In the context of Portugal, I am reasonably certain that's not been the reason Pepe has had continued inclusion.

Discuss.

Soca Warriors face daunting task against Bolivia.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

It will be a difficult but much-needed challenge for this country's senior national footballers against Bolivia on Friday's at the Estadio Olimpico Patrio in Sucre.

The team leaves on Tuesday with the odds stacked against them, according to coach Angus Eve, following a training session at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva yesterday, facing the scare of high altitude conditions, a full-strength Bolivian team as well as an inexperienced T&T outfit.

However, with no football for his players during the last three FIFA windows last year, coupled with no CFU or Caribbean Cup tournaments as it was in the past, the match is critical for not only the Nations League later this year but also the development of the sport which is severely lacking.

"Having not had any matches in the last three FIFA-match windows of last year, we thought it important that we try to play in every window in this year. We couldn't ask for better opposition. It may not be so ideal for us because we still can't have competitive football playing in Trinidad and mainly this team is a locally-based team that is going abroad, but this will be a very good experience for them to go into a game such as this.

We need a core-based team that will be training here, to give the guys that bit of experience. They need to play matches to gain experience. It's all well and good to have training but we don't have a local league playing at present.

If you look at the squad you will see a lot of unattached players, so we need to fill that void by getting matches for them to play to prepare them going into the Nations League," Eve explained.

He added: "Because we haven't played for a while, it's just general for us, but also because of the opposition and the atmosphere they will be playing in, that in itself will be a challenge for the guys so to have them play in that type of environment, will be an invaluable experience so that when we have to go to places like Mexico, we will be more prepared for that."

For many years T&T senior teams have played World Cup qualifiers and other matches in front of large crowds in high altitude conditions in Mexico. And only recently at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States last year, the men in red, white and black were verbally abused and criticised by crowds of Mexican supporters, when they held the Mexican team to a goalless draw in Arlington.

Friday's match which was initially carded for Santa Cruz in Bolivia was moved to Sucre, which is some 9,000 feet above sea level. The Bolivians will use the match as preparation for their World Cup against Venezuela and Chile soon after.

Eve said: "Bolivia have all their players. They've picked all their players because 90 percent of the team play in Bolivia and the few players that play in Brazil, play with Santos and Cruzeiro, their captain. One player plays for the same team as Joevin Jones and they are all back for this game because they have World Cup qualifying six days after so their full team is here for this game, so it will be a major test for our guys."

Newcomer Stephon Marcano joins Soca Warriors for Bolivia friendly
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday).

STEPHON MARCANO is the only new face included in the Trinidad and Tobago men’s football team, who will travel to Bolivia on Tuesday for Friday’s friendly international match against the hosts in Sucre.

The 22-year-old Marcano can play both as a right-back and as a right-sided midfielder. The former Fatima College student is currently a student at California State University.

Another uncapped player in the squad is teenaged midfielder Molik Khan, who was a reserve member of T&T team at the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup in the United States.

The team, selected by coach Angus Eve on Monday, features the experienced goalkeepers Marvin Phillip and Adrian Foncette, as well as central defender Radanfah Abu Bakr, wing-backs Mekeil Williams and Alvin Jones.

Eve, who spoke to the media during a training session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Monday morning, mentioned the inactivity of the team since the Gold Cup last July, but hopes the players can give a good account of themselves against a Bolivia squad who are still involved in 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

“Having not had any matches in the last three windows of last year, we thought it very important that we try to play in every window in this year, and you couldn’t ask for a better opposition,” he said. “It may not be so ideal for us because we still don’t have competitive football playing in Trinidad and, mainly, this team is a locally-based team, but this will be good experience (from) a game like this.”

The former T&T midfielder and captain mentioned, “They need to play matches to gain experience. It’s all well and good with our training, but we don’t have a league playing at present. If you look at the squad, you’ll see a lot of unattached players, so the national team needs to fill that void by getting matches for them to play to prepare us going into the Nations League.”

Concerning the Bolivia squad, Eve said, “They have picked all their players, 90 per cent of the team plays in Bolivia. The few players that (are based) in Brazil play with Santos and Cruziero. They all are back for this because they have World Cup qualifying (action) about six days after.

“It will be a major test for our guys. The game will be played in Sucre, which is 9,000 feet above sea level, so that will add challenges to our guys, but we need to play in these adverse circumstances.”

Asked how important is it for sport to resume in T&T, Eve replied, “If you can have a boat ride that holds 200 (people) then this Stadium holds 25,000, you can have 500 and call it a safe zone.”

Best of luck to Soca Warriors
T&T Newsday

THE EDITOR: Congratulations to the 21-man squad and reserves selected by Angus Eve for the international friendly against Bolivia on January 21.

Unfortunately, as this match is not in FIFA’s window, senior national players such as Aubrey David, Levi Garcia, Judah Garcia, regular captain Khaleem Hyland, and Marcus Joseph, to name a few, are not available for selection owing to club commitments.

By extension, best wishes and speedy recovery to Kevin Molino, who would have been an automatic pick in attacking midfield.

Among the experienced players like Marvin “ Marvelous” Phillip, Radanfah Abu Bakr, and Alvin Jones, I am very excited to see youngsters like Molik Khan and Jean-Paul Rochard who have impressed in the SSFL pre-pandemic and at club level.

Let this be an opportunity for fringe players to showcase their talent on the world stage and make their country proud. It is also very pleasing that the gaffer has so many selection headaches given the talent, depth and squad variety.

Of course, it’s a friendly match, but the competitive adrenaline will flow, and they must treat it as a World Cup Final. Full support for Angus Eve, and his auxiliary staff. I am still buzzing over the new BOL kit that I bought from Fan Club in Trincity Mall, and I can’t wait to take off the tag.

On the offence, remember fellas, pass and move. Exploit gaps and let the football do the running. With the ball, use the width of the pitch and raise your head for an assist. On the defence, two banks of four – sit deep, press high, close the opposition players down, keep your hands to yourself, and no rash challenges.

Lastly, if taking a shot, keep your head over the ball and put your laces through it!

Trinbagonians, we are calling on Robert Hadad and the normalisation committee to provide salaries, financial support, and compliance with contracts in abundance to the national selection and staff. Soca Warriors, you have our loyal support, and wish you guys safe travel to Bolivia and return to Trinidad and Tobago. Soca Warriors to the world!

The match today pits Trinidad and Tobago against its sixth (6th) CONMEBOL opponent following six (6) prior matches played over 7.5 years. Ecuador was faced twice (both under Dennis Lawrence).

All of the engagements have been away fixtures, with solely one encounter having occurred on an official match date (Ecuador, 2019).

The Warriors have conceded 18 goals and discounted two items (Jomal Williams versus Uruguay, courtesy Shahdon Winchester, and Carlyle Mitchell versus Ecuador, 2017).

Opponents faced: Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The above excludes home and away encounters versus Peru in 2013.

Only a handful of Bolivians are attached to clubs outside of Bolivia. One of the starters, Saavedra, signed today to play with Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa). $800,000 deal that will pay $250K annually. Sure to be bubbling with adrenaline as a result.

At about 8', Telfer had an opportunity to impact the scoreline ... having leveraged his pace to get into an advantageous position.

Subsequently, Bolivia had a goal disallowed.

Probably the two most notable moments as inflexión points prior to Bolivia unlocking the goals.

Please with players' effort, but disappointed with result - Eve
By Rachael Thompson-King (T&T Guardian).

T&T's senior men's football team suffered its biggest loss under coach Angus Eve, falling to a huge 5-0 defeat to Bolivia in their international friendly match at the Estadio Olimpico Patria in Sucre, Bolivia on Friday afternoon.

The "Soca Warriors" were outplayed by the host team for the entire match and coach Eve admitted that his unit played a very good team under tough conditions they did well and he was pleased with the effort of his young team.

"Not expecting the result but expected the way the game would have gone. When we took the game, not making any excuses, we took the game because it was playing in Santa Cruz which is normal atmosphere. All the guys in here you could hear them coughing, there is a lot of air in the lungs so it was really difficult from a physical standpoint for the players and once your physicality goes, the technical part of it tends to go," said Eve after his first match since being officially appointed as permanent head coach of the men’s team in September 2021.

The match was initially carded for Santa Cruz in Bolivia but was moved to Sucre, which is some 9,000 feet above sea level. It was also the first time that the Bolivian team played in Sucre in 23 years since playing to a goalless draw in a friendly international against Venezuela.

It was a tough clash from the kick-off with the Bolivia side the more aggressive of the two teams.

However, it was Alvin Jones who had the first try at goal for T&T with a right-footed shot from a difficult angle and long range on the right which missed to the left.

But it was Bolivia opening the scoring. T&T conceded a goal from the penalty spot after defender Radanfah Abu Bakr fouled Bolivian Erwin Saavedra in the penalty area. Juan Arce stepped up and converted the penalty with a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner in the 34th minute.

Bolivia continued to attack but T&T looked to be heading into the first half, down 1-0 until Rodrigo Ramallo landed a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top left corner in the 45th to give his team a 2-0 lead

Jones almost pulled one back for T&T in the added-on time of the first half, with another right-footed shot from long range on the right but goalkeeper Carlos Lampe saved in the top centre of the goal.

To start the second half, Eve made three changes to his line-up with Reon Moore replacing Neveal Hackshaw, Molik Khan taking over for Ajani Fortune, and Hashim Arcia, who replaced Jesse Williams.

Warriors again had the first chance at goal in the second half but Noah Powder's left-footed shot from outside the box missed the target in the 47th minute.

However, the inexperienced Soca Warriors team deficit increased in the 53rd, thanks to Marcelo Martins' right-footed shot from the centre of the box, sending the ball to the bottom left corner. He was assisted by Bruno Miranda.

Ten minutes later, Martins' had an assist, heading in a pass to Leonel Justiniano, who in turn headed in his team's fourth item.

The fifth and final goal came from a right-footed shot from Bruno Miranda in the 87th.

For the Soca Warriors, the match was the team's first since a 1-1 draw with Guatemala in their final Concacaf Gold Cup Group B series last July 18 which followed a 2-0 loss to El Salvador on July 14, and a 0-0 draw with the region powerhouse Mexico in their tournament main draw opener, four days earlier.

On the pressures of playing against World Cup nation, Eve said in the post-match interview, it was good exposure for the young players that were exposed.

He said, "This is a learning curve we had a lot of young players in this squad here and they would take something from the exercise today. Sometimes you lose a game but you really didn't really lose because we expose so much young players in the game today, I think it's only going to augur well for them playing under this type of atmosphere, atmosphere with the stands, atmosphere with air.

"So this is a learning curve for them because they may have to play in altitude sometimes."

T&T coach Angus Eve called up a number of players who were based in the US for this friendly, as the locally-based players (including defender Radanfah Abu Bakr and Justin Garcia, as well as goalkeeper Adrian Foncette and debutant midfielder Molik Khan) have been inactive since the Concacaf Gold Cup last July.

At the high-altitude Estadio Olimpico Patria in Sucre, Bolivia, in the midst of Conmebol World Cup qualifiers, were confident and clinical, while T&T, starting with a five-man back line, appeared keen to invite pressure.

Bolivia obliged, starting with speculative shots, before inching forward and ultimately penetrating the visitors’ defence far too easily for four of their five goals. The T&T defence was breached early in the match when a lobbed ball fell to the feet of forward Marcelo Martins, who slotted easily past Foncette, only for his effort to be disallowed for offside.

T&T’s near escape, however, was followed by a flurry of Bolivia chances. Juan Arce opened for the South Americans in the 35th minute from a penalty, which was a debatable call from the referee, as Erwin Saavendra lobbed Abu Bakr before going down from a slight touch from the centre-back.

Bolivia finished the half ahead 2-0, shortly after midfielder Rodrigo Ramallo shot and scored from outside the penalty box, with minimal pressure.

The match was done and dusted for the Bolivians by the 53rd minute when Martins collected a pass unchallenged inside the box to finish past Foncette.

T&T conceded another soft goal in the 63rd minute when a cross from Martins eluded the heads of Abu Bakr and Jamal Jack for a Leonel Justiano to score.

Miranda rounded off the scoring in the 87th minute.

It was Eve’s first international match since his permanent appointment and the country’s first since competing in the Gold Cup last July. There were few memorable individual performances for T&T. Khan, however, was a bright spark in his lively debut, while most of his teammates looked exhausted and off the pace.

T&T offered very little offensively from the beginning, recording only two attempts on target to Bolivia’s 12 overall. Bolivia also enjoyed almost three-quarters of ball possession.

The Warriors, comprising mostly inactive players (the United States and Canada seasons will begin in April), looked sluggish, uninspired and without a particular game plan, contrary to a Bolivia squad of match-fit players.

The match fell outside of an official FIFA international match window, which meant neither team could compel active and contracted players to feature.

Bolivia will turn their attention to their World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Chile within the next two weeks, while T&T will focus on the first stage of the CONCACAF Nations League, starting in June, unless friendly matches are scheduled before.

Oxygen tanks at bench, dressing room highlight T&T's challenge.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

National coach Angus Eve was pleased with the effort of his players on Friday despite a demoralising 5-0 loss to Bolivia in an international friendly in Sucre, Bolivia, but told the media via a virtual press conference on Saturday that the writing was on the wall before the game started.

"I haven't played a game where the opposition brought oxygen tanks to the training for you and they put two oxygen tanks in the dressing room for you and two more by the bench. That alone tells you what they knew to be their strengths and what they knew would hamper us in the warm-up. We lost coach Clayton Ince and he was just jogging around with the goalkeepers and warming them up and he fell ill, so we had to take him back to the dressing room and give him oxygen. Marvin Phillip had to finish the warm-up with Foncette," Eve, a former national coach told the media.

He was also comforted by the fact that South American powerhouse Uruguay was also beaten by the Bolivians 3-0, featuring some of their top players such as Luis Suarez.

Before the match, Eve and his staff did a full analysis of their opponents, employing a plan to counter the way they attacked, their system of play to the way they defend. But according to Eve: " It was difficult to execute the game plan because the players physically, I mean, for the first 35 minutes we limited them to shooting outside the box and not getting those balls they like to get to their captain at the back post.

We had a full analysis of everything Bolivia has done in the last three matches and we dissected the way they play, using the 3:5:2, the way they attack. They try to go to the middle and then to the flanks, they whip the ball inwards from the left side and straight across from the right side.

So basically, we prepared for that, but what we did not prepare for was the players losing oxygen as fast as they were. If you looked, the midfield was spent I would say after the 32nd minutes where we were in the game and limited them to just shots.

I saw a reporter talk about how many shots were taken but how much of them were on target was not in the statistics."

The Bolivians are preparing for World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Chile. They became the obvious choice after options with other teams did not fall through. The South Americans, now eighth-ranked in CONMEBOL also suffered a few problems of their own, with a few players battling the COVID-19 virus. However, this didn't show, against the Soca Warriors 9, 000 feet above sea level.

Eve opted to use speedy winger Ryan Telfer as the lone man up front but with the midfield struggling to keep possession of the ball, he became a non-factor.

Eve believes domestic football will be a solution to the issues of match-fitness on the national team, as well a solution to many societal problems, noting that football and in particular non-contact sports are being played in other countries worldwide.

The local T&T players are due to return on Sunday, while others will be returning to their respective clubs.

I didn't see the match. But when it's at high altitude and the need oxygen, you really can't expect much.

I was not expecting much. I will say in this current situation and at high altitude, 5-0 is not bad. Some former national players who have played in Mexico,Toluca to be exact, have said that the altitude is a definite factor in performance. When going to play in Mexico or the high altitude SA countries, your team has to be physical fit to make up for the lack of oxygen. Bolivia and Mexico have always used the altitude to their advantage.

I rememberin the mid 80s hearing feedback from a TT U-14 team that went to Mexico.

The game had to stopped at times because they were bleeding from the nose and they had to be given oxygen.

Nah..Nah. No problem. At times even Brazil does ketch the arse to beat Bolivia at Bolivia.

Under Spanish coach Xabier Azkargorta and featuring nine players from Tahuichi, Bolivia surprisingly became the first team to beat Brazil in the 1994 World Cup qualifiers while playing them in La Paz, with a 2–0 win, and qualified for the 1994 World Cup by finishing second in Group B behind the Brazilians themselves.

But I am glad these guys played against a competitive team. We don't like the score, but they have to play. Hopefully the govt open up the sports venues with tough rules.

As I expected, bottom-of-the-table Venezuela is DESTROYING Bolivia. Hat-trick by Rondon and plenty time left. 4-1 at the moment.

If not much was expected, then the only point of the exercise was getting playing time for the team? Were there any lessons to be learned? I've read in the media about positive things to be taken, but they were not actually mentioned.

The only positive thing was that they were able to get a game. Look, 2026 right around the corner. We better prepare the 16 and 20 yr olds. Unless FIFA increase the teams, only 1 and 1/2 spot available. CR, Honduras, Panama, El Sal, Haiti, JA.  Then DR,PR,Suriname, Curacao knocking on the Caribbean door. No time to f--k around.

Bolivia and Chile are playing on a field drenched with water. Some with puddles the dimension of craters ... reminiscent of ah ole school Intercol. Chile just notched a wicked free kick. Chile 1 Bolivia 0 at halfway through the first half. Goal x Alexis Sánchez. So altitude and a swamp.

Now a dogfight. Tied at 1-1 with momentum shifting. Players on both teams dealing with the ground conditions well.
