Tiger Tanks U-20 tourney in line for approval
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

The Ascension Football Tournament's scheduled start in March may not happen after all. At least so it seems.

The tournament, despite receiving the go-ahead by the return-to-sport order by Minister of Health Terrance Deyalsingh and his colleague Shamfa Cudjoe, the Minister of Sports and Community Development on Monday, did not receive endorsement from the T&T Football Association.

Guardian Media Sports was reliably informed on Thursday that only the Tiger Tanks Under-20 National Football Tournament which will be put on by businessman Denis Latiff, was given the go-ahead to have a competition to date. However, this can change in the coming days or weeks.

The Tiger Tanks tourney is scheduled to kick off on March 3 and will feature 10 teams from Trinidad and another five from the sister isle of Tobago over an eight-week period.

It is understood the Tiger Tanks under-20 competition received the green light in June last year, after the Normalisation Committee of the TTFA which is led by businessman Robert Hadad, sent an official request to the sports' governing body - the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and received it.

However, attempts yesterday to contact both Hadad and Amiel Mohammed, the acting General Secretary of the T&TFA for a comment on the approval via Whatsapp, proved futile as both did not respond to the question: 'which tournaments have been sanctioned or which tournaments will receive sanction for the reopening of football.'

Both Richard Ferguson, the La Horquetta owner and his manager Kieron Edwards admitted last year that approval was granted for the tournament in 2020, but Hadad allegedly indicated during a radio interview last year, that he was no longer willing to sanction the Ascension tournament.

Colin Wharfe, Chairman, Competition Steering Committee Tiger Tanks Under-20 Men's Football Tournament said the normalisation committee will confirm in writing to all desirous of staging competitions soon.

According to Wharfe: "Things are fluid at the moment, the primary thing is that now that the regulations are in place, the operational and implementational reality of those need to be put in place and applications need to be submitted.

It's a whole bunch of operations that need to be executed upon and either somewhere between the start and the end of that process.

It is my understanding that the NC will provide written confirmation of their approval to engage in the qualifying sporting activity.

So there are a number of individuals who have either already started organising competitions, and there are people who are also interesting in starting competitions What they will have to do is go through the protocols to get approval from the NC, especially if you want it to be held under the auspices of the TTFA."

Quizzed further on whether the Tiger Tanks tourney will be held under the auspices of the TTFA, Wharfe said: "Until we get confirmation that it is going to be held, and we do not have confirmation from the NC to proceed to hold competitive matches. Because as I said, the process to do so is predicated on the operationalization of the healthcare return-to-play protocols promulgated by the minister and they need to know what those are in substance and operationally."

Wharfe noted also that he will not be able to offer an answer if the tournament will not be held under the auspices of the TTFA.

Tiger Tanks U-20 tourney kicks off on April 2
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)

The inaugural Tiger Tanks Under-20 Men’s Invitational Football Tournament will kick off on April 2.

The tournament received the green light from both Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, and Minister of Sport and Community Development, Shamfa Cudjoe.

The competition will be held under the auspices of the normalisation committee of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association, whose Chairman, Robert Hadad, is excited that, “U-20 players will receive much-needed match fitness and be able to showcase their talents in an effort to attract interest from clubs and colleges, both locally and internationally”.

The tournament will operate under the Safe-Zone mandate, in compliance with government protocols.

Sixty-seven matches are expected to be played over the next 12 weeks and teams and players will vie for cash and individual awards and prizes.

Competition kicks off on April 2 and will comprise two groups, with ten teams from Trinidad and five from Tobago. The winner of each group will then play each other, home and away, to determine the tournament champion. Games will only be played on weekends, at available national stadia and other designated safe zone venues.

Action gets under way from 2 pm next week Saturday in Group II at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Tobago. Group I will commence the following Saturday (April 9) at three stadia in Trinidad.

Angus Eve, Head Coach of the senior men’s and Under-20 national football squads, said: “This is music to my ears, that this tournament has finally been approved as it will give much needed match fitness to the national U-20 players in preparation for their upcoming tournament in June. T&T will finally have competitive football in a key demographic very soon.”

Likewise, Anton Corneal, technical director of the TTFA, was also pleased with the impending restart of youth football following a two-year- absence due to the Covid- 19 pandemic. “I would like to thank the persons that took the time and dedication to put on such a league,” stated Corneal.

“The restarting of football in our country faced many challenges, inclusive of Covid protocols, and the series of sanctions needed by the league administrators. Hopefully, in the very near future, all zonal and national leagues will also be up and running,” he added.

Tiger Tanks Managing Director Denis Latiff remarked that, “This tournament is something that we wanted to be associated with for a long time especially given our involvement in the on-going development of youth football in Trinidad and Tobago.”

Participating teams:

GROUP I (Trinidad) — Caledonia AIA, Central FC, Club Sando FC, Defence Force FC, Petit Valley/Diego Martin FC, Police FC, QPCC FA, San Juan Jabloteh FC, Trendsetter Hawks FA, W Connection FC.

GROUP II (Tobago) — Bethel United, FC Tobago Phoenix, St. Clair Coaching School, Stokely Vale FC, Youth Stars United.

Return to sport a pillar of hope for young men
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

Trendsetter Hawks FA attacker Malachi Celestine believes the inaugural Tiger Tanks Under-20 Men’s Invitational Football Tournament can serve as a pillar of hope for young men who may have turned to a life of crime, owing to the absence of sport for the past two years.

Celestine, who hails from Sea Lots, Port of Spain, was among a host of club representatives present at the National Cricket Centre in Couva on Thursday for the competition’s official launch.

The 19-year old footballer is eager to resume domestic play. He believes it’s a golden opportunity for youngsters to get back involved in sport and rid themselves of any negative traits they may have picked up during the lengthy time away.

Sport, more so contact sport, was only given the green light to resume, with restrictions, in January, by the Ministry of Sport and Community Development and Ministry of Health, after a two-year ban because of covid19.

Celestine, who attended East Mucurapo Secondary, hopes this tournament serves as a catalyst for change for some young men.

He said, “I see this competition as taking youths out of the ghetto and putting them back into society in a positive light. It might make a lot of youths change their mind because a lot of them thought that football was not going to start back any time soon.

“It (downtime) was tough on the guys (young players) with all this (killing) that’s taking place in Trinidad. Everybody had to stay home and we couldn’t come out and play ball. So this should, hopefully, inspire more young players, to return to sport and change their ways.”

Caledonia AIA U20 midfielder Nathaniel Babwah, who hails from Morvant, shared similar sentiments and also anticipates the start of the inaugural tourney.

The competition kicks off in Tobago on April 2 and features 15 teams; ten from Trinidad and five from Tobago.

“I am ready. It was hard not playing football for two years, because of covid19. But I am grateful that this opportunity has come around and I am ready to represent my team. I want to get Caledonia back to the top.

“I also agree with Malachi that the tournament, and more like these, will help young men return to sport,” said Babwah, a Malick Secondary graduate.

The tournament kicks off with the opening round of matches at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago on April 2.

Fifteen teams: ten from Trinidad (group one) and five from the sister-isle (group two), vie for top honours. Group two kick starts the tourney while group one begins their campaign, one week later, in Trinidad.

The winner of each group will play each other, home and away, to determine the tournament champion. Games will be played on weekends with over 60 expected to be contested over the next three months.

Tobago Phoenix, St Clair's Coaching School feature in 4-4 draw.
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday).

FC TOBAGO Phoenix squandered an early two-goal lead against St Clair’s Coaching School and held on to 4-4 result when round two action of the Tiger Tanks Men’s Under-20 Invitational continued on Saturday.

At the Montgomery Recreation Ground in Bethel, Tobago, back-to-back goals from Jabari Alexander (10th) and Jariel Arthur (11th) provided Tobago Phoenix with the best possible start.

But a strong response from St Clair’s Quason Sharp (24th) and Victor Gregoire (37th) tied things up at the half-time break.

Three minutes into the second period, St Clair went ahead for the first time courtesy a strike from Adriel George. However, Tobago Phoenix’s Jeremiah Bristol levelled the field once more as he found the back of the net ten minutes later.

St Clair’s Collin Sargeant made it 4-3 in the 72nd minute but Arthur struck again, in the 84th, to square things off before the final whistle.

This result saw St Clair’s remain atop the group two (Tobago) standings on four points, having won their opener against Stokely Vale FC 5-0 last weekend. FC Tobago Phoenix are currently third (two points) following two drawn results thus far.

In the other Tobago meeting on Saturday, Youth Stars United (three points) got their campaign off to a winning start as they beat Bethel United 3-1. The latter scored first through Jamell Bartholemew 30 minutes in.

But a second half surge from Youth Stars saw Moses Bernard (62nd), Nicholas Sanchez (85th) and Mecil Murray (90-plus two) spur on a successful fightback.

Additionally, first round group one (Trinidad) matches also kicked off over the weekend. Police FC opened their account with a 3-0 thrashing of Petit Valley/Diego Martin United FC courtesy goals from Isaiah Edwards (57th), Jaron Pascall (62nd) and Jelani King (75th).

A brace from Larry Noel (16th and 65th) also gave Defence Force a 2-1 victory over AC Port of Spain, who got their lone item from Aiden Lynch (80th).

Meanwhile San Juan Jabloteh defeated Caledonia AIA 1-0 with Dwight Jordan scoring in the 27th while Trendsetter Hawks edged Central FC by the same score-line. Jeremiah Williams got his name on the scoresheet in the 27th.

Also, W Connection FC and Club Sando played to a 1-1 result. Nigel Carraby netted for Connection after seven minutes but Omari Campbell replied in the 15th.

Police FC currently lead the Trinidad-team standings followed by Defence Force FC, San Juan Jabloteh and Trendsetter Hawks FC respectively. All are on three points each.

Round three action for the Tobago teams and round two for the Trinidad squads continue on Saturday.

As it stands, St Clair’s Sargeant leads the goalscoring standings with three goals in two games.

Youth Stars United atop Tobago in Tiger Tanks U-20 football
T&T Newsday

YOUTH Stars United's second victory in as many games, placed them atop the team standings, in the Tobago zone of the Tiger Tanks under-20 invitational football tournament.

The eastern boys edged FC Tobago Phoenix 1-nil at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

In a hotly-contested match, Youth Stars' defence marshalled by Antonio Blackman and Mercil Murray, along with goal Keeper Deshawn Robley, stood firm against Phoenix's relentless attacks.

Against the run of play, a Youth Stars defender lobbed the ball forward in a quick counterattack, which caught the Phoenix defenders off-guard. Youth Stars captain Moses Bernard, was first to the ball, and slotted it past the Phoenix custodian, for the only goal of the match.

Phoenix's push for the equaliser took a major blow, when Jariel Arthur, their most influential player on the day, had to leave the field, due to injury midway into the second half.

Commenting after the game, Youth Stars coach Hayden Mc Phearson expressed his satisfaction with the tournament and his team's momentum.

“Our team spirit is very high," he said. "Everybody is positive and coming out to training, and working very hard. They have bought into our philosophy and are really enjoying themselves.

“I tell them the teams may have more skilful players, but our team spirit and fitness can make the difference. At this present time, we think we can go all the way and win the championship.”

Mc Pheason added, “this tournament is really good for the youths of Trinidad and Tobago. It is excellent exposure for the players going to the next stage of their careers.”

While Phoenix is on two points from three games, their coach Nigel De Souza is not daunted by the task ahead. He said, “We have generally played well, but lack of concentration at key moments during games, has cost us goals.

“We are not out of contention for the championship. We have two weeks before our next game, to put in some hard work, and get the required results."

Stokely Vale FC have not registered a point in the tournament after two games, but gave a much-improved account of themselves versus Bethel United, in the later game.

Complacency in the Stokely Vale defence, however, allowed Japhire Edwards to breach their defensive line in the 65th minute, to give Bethel a 1-0 victory.

Round four matches at the Dwight Yorke Stadium on Saturday, will feature Bethel United versus St Clair Coaching School at 2.00 pm, followed by Stokely Vale FC against Youth Stars United at 4.15 pm.

The top team in Tobago after two rounds of matches will oppose the winner among the ten teams in the Trinidad zone, on a home-and-away basis, to determine the champions.

Leaders Defence Force edge Jabloteh 1-0.
T&T Newsday Reports.

LEADERS Defence Force, recovered strongly after last week’s shock loss to bottom-of-the-table W Connection with a solid 1-0 victory against San Juan Jabloteh, in the Trinidad zone of the Tiger Tanks Under-20 Invitational Tournament, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Sunday.

Defence Force extended their lead at the top thanks to a scrappy finish from Larry Noel in the 44th minute.

They dominated the early moments of the game and created more scoring chances than their opponents. Jelani Peters had the opportunity to put Defence Force ahead from a right-flank cross after eight minutes, but the defender headed the ball over the bar from three yards out.

Jabloteh struggled to stamp their authority on the game and failed to put pressure on the Defence Force back line. In addition to the goal conceded, they suffered an injury blow in the 45th minute when their goalkeeper Thane Devonish had to be replaced by Rajala Mitchell due to a sprained finger.

The second half proved to be more of the same as Mitchell pulled off a string of saves to prevent Defence Force from extending their lead. Jabloteh had a rare chance to equalise from a free-kick in the 84th minute but captain Dwight Jordan skied it high over the bar to their coach’s despair. Defence Force held on to claim all three points.

After seven matches, Defence Force have a tally of 18 points, followed by Club Sando and Trendsetter Hawks (13 points apiece), and Jabloteh (12).

At the Manny Ramjohn Stadium on Saturday, Club Sando were dramatically triumphant in a see-saw game against Central FC to leap into second place. Omari Asher got them off the mark in the 25th minute but Central replied with two quick goals from Akhenaton Ashby (38th minute) and Dwight Yorke (43rd minute) to go into the halftime in pole position. Nathaniel O’Garro brought Club Sando level in the 48th minute and clinched the game-winner in the 90th minute.

At Jabloteh’s expense, Trendsetter Hawks leaped into third after a 2-0 win against last week’s big winners, W Connection. Isaiah Williams headed past his namesake in the Connection goal, Isaiah Williams, to put Hawks 1-0 up in first half stoppage time. Jeremiah Williams netted Hawks’ second in the 64th minute to wrap up their fourth win of the campaign.

Elsewhere, Petit Valley/Diego Martin United claimed a slender 1-0 victory over AC Port-of-Spain at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo and Police shared the spoils with Caledonia AIA in a 2-2 draw at the St. James Police Barracks.

In Tobago, the two teams at the bottom of the table, Bethel United and Stokely Vale FC, played to a 1-1 stalemate while FC Tobago Phoenix beat Youth Stars United 1-0 to draw level with them on points. Leaders of the pack, St. Clair’s Coaching School, were on a bye.
