Young Warriors beat UAE to warm up for World Cup

ANTALYA, Turkey, Sep 3, CMC – Trinidad & Tobago young Soca Warriors warmed up nicely for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup Finals later this month, with a 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates in an international friendly on Thursday.
Midfielder Sean De Silva handed T&T the ideal start when he fired in the opening goal in the 10th minute to put the Caribbean side ahead.
Twelve minutes later, striker Qian Grosvenor who started up front with Jamal Clarence, netted the second goal for T&T to lead 2-0 at the interval.
The UAE reduced the deficit in the 58th minute but T&T squad held on for the win to avenge its previous defeats in Dubai which came in previous warm-up clashes earlier this year.
T&T will now play their next match against a local club team from Antalya on Sunday before meeting Cameroon next Tuesday and UAE again two days later.
The Caribbean side are preparing for the upcoming Under-20 World Cup which kicks off on September 24 in Egypt. They meet the hosts in the opening match.
T&T, coached by Yugoslavia-born Zoran Vranes, are coming off a two-match tour of England.
Trinidad are expected to be boosted by the arrival of three overseas-based players in midfielder Khaleem Hyland of Belgium’s Zulte Waregem, striker Jamal Gay of Germany’s Rot Weiss Oberhausen and England-born utility player Jake Thomson of Southampton.
At the end of series of matches in Turkey, T&T will travel to Cyprus for two more matches against the United States and Australia before heading Egypt.

Honduras charging up for clash with “Soca Warriors”
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago’s National senior footballers will have a final dress rehearsal at around 6pm (8pm T&T Time) on Friday at the Olympic Metropolitan Stadium in San Pedro Sula, venue for Saturday’s 2010 World Cup qualifier against Honduras.

The Russell Latapy-coached team had a closed door session at the Francisco Morazan Stadium on Wednesday and took up the option to train at the match venue from 3pm on Thursday (today).

On Wednesday, after a prior agreement to use the Morazan Stadium made two weeks ago and again promised a day before, the T&T management staff had to meet a payment request of USD $1,000 from the stadium owners to use the venue for two hours. There was a delay in the start of the session and Yorke and a couple other members of the staff who had arrived at the venue prior to the team, were asked to refrain from setting up for the session until the payment was made. T&T eventually got on with its session and on Thursday, the Honduran authorities apologized and returned the cash to the T&T management team.

The Hondurans have been making a big deal about the encounter all week with the affair grabbing the headlines everyday in the newspapers and local media houses trying to stay as close around the T&T team as possible.

There was an unconfirmed report that their captain Amado Guevara suffered a right ankle injury in training on Tuesday and remains doubtful for the match. Three other players Carlos Costly, Wilson Palacios and Osman Chavez are ruled out from Saturday’s clash on yellow cards suspension.

And there has been much said about the 1-0 win by T&T back in October 2001 courtesy of a Stern John goal which crushed Honduras’ chances of advancing to World Cup 2002. That win came on the heels of Mickey Trotman’s death in a car accident in Trinidad.

"The past is past, so there is nothing more to say,” said Guevara.

Ivan Guerrero added: "We hit the goal post just seven times, not knowing what happened. We had control of the ball and the ball did not score. "It was bad luck." That scene was terrible".

Honduras boss Reinaldo Rueda said he was working strongly on his tactics for T&T.

“We have had good sessions over the past two days and we are getting ready. We need to be in good shape for the game,” said Rueda. “We will play an attacking style to win. Whether David Suazo plays or not, we will not change our style. We want to win."

Wigan Athletic striker Jason Scotland said he was keenly awaiting the chance to try and push T&T to eight points. Two of his Wigan’s teammates, defender Hendry Thomas and Maynor Figueroa are in the Honduras line up and the bets are on.

“It’s going to be big challenge for both teams because they also want to win at home,” Scotland told TTFF Media.

“The boys at Wigan have been talking about the game and there was some banter as well. I had a knock on my ankle a little while ago and they making jokes and were touching it, saying they think it will be alright for the match.

“Generally speaking, I think we have a good chance because we have players who can get the job done but it’s just a matter of us getting it together and doing what we need to on the pitch. The boys are all feeling good at the moment and the sessions have been spot on so hopefully we can carry this into the game on Saturday and set up a good result before we face the US on Wednesday,” Scotland added.

Soca Warriors off to San Pedro Sula

Issued by Shaun Fuentes, TTFF Media Officer, August 31,2009

A 21-man squad is scheduled to arrive in San Pedro Sula tonight (Monday night) just around 7:45 pm and check into the Hilton Princess Hotel for a live-in camp ahead of Saturday’s 2010 World Cup qualifier against Honduras .

Head Coach Russell Latapy, his technical staff and eleven home-based professionals left Piarco International Airport for Honduras via Miami at 8am on Monday. The team will have its first training session on Tuesday at 3pm at the Francisco Morazan Stadium in San Pedro Sula .

The home-based players in the squad include Joe Public foursome Keyeno Thomas, Hayden Tinto Trent Noel and Kerry Baptiste, W Connection trio Marvin Phillip, Jan Michael Williams and Hughton Hector, Defence Force’s  Keston Williams, Caledonia AIA’s Densill Theobald  and Keon Daniel and Mau Pau midfielder Lyndon Andrews.

The local contingent will be met in Miami by eleven-overseas based pros called up by Latapy. That list includes Sunderland duo Carlos Edwards and Kenwyne Jones, Walsall goalkeeper Clayton Ince, Hamilton defender Marvin Andrews, Bolton Wanderers defender Jlloyd Samuel, Wrexham’s Silvio Spann, LA Galaxy midfielder Chris Birchall, San Jose Earthquakes forward Cornell Glen, Wigan Athletic forward Jason Scotland and new Swansea City signing Radanfah Abu Bakr.

Fulham striker Bobby Zamora is in the squad to complete a 22-man squad as well but is expected to undergo observation on an injury before traveling.

Bakr meantime, on the heels of signing a new short-term deal with Swansea , said he was thrilled with his new move and is hoping to take his game to a higher level.

“ I’m obviously delighted to be here,” Bakr told TTFF Media on Sunday.  The Championship is highly competitive, with some massive clubs, so it's a challenge I’m anxious to undertake. Swansea are an ambitious club, with an impressive new stadium, great fans and I feel really welcomed here,” he added.

“The experience with the national team has been a tremendous one so far and I’m hoping to grow with every outing. Getting out here in England should help me take my game to the next level and I’m hoping to use this opportunity to make myself a more complete player for the international stage as well. We have a good squad and these two games coming up are obviously crucial to our qualifying chances. Hopefully we can dig deep and achieve the desired results,” Bakr added.

His contract is until January with the option to extend thereafter.

Meantime, Honduras forward David Suazo, who has been sidelined from Honduras with a knee injury, is back in the national squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico .

Suazo, who plays for Inter Milan, was injured in the spring playing for Portugal 's Benfica.

"Fortunately, Suazo feels good," Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda said on Thursday. "According to what he shows, we'll decide if he plays or not."

US names Findley in roster to face T&T

United States midfielder Robbie Rogers and forward Robbie Finley, who is eligible of playing for Trinidad and Tobago were selected for their first World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador on Sept. 5 and at Trinidad and Tobago four days later at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

US  coach Bob Bradley chose a mostly unchanged roster following the 2-1 loss in Mexico City .

Landon Donovan was named on Thursday despite coming down with swine flu ahead of the Mexico game, while Jozy Altidore will return from England, where the teenager posted his first goal for Hull this week.

Star defender Oguchi Onyewu, who failed to get into AC Milan's season opener last weekend, was suspended for the El Salvador match after getting his second yellow card.

Findley was part of a previous  T&T training camp in the United States .
