Yeah pretty mutch and then you got the big egos trying to control everything the local pro-league separated this year so theres two leagues going to play, Bayamon FC is going to lose alot of support, and some players because the Islanders are planing to field a B team again. But I guess its good because know there a solid link between academy and Islanders main squad.

Intru... what is the degree of penetration of the sport among the population... how popular is football/futbol among the youth in PR?  What is support like in the stands among the professional teams?

Maybe like 15% to 20% of the population follow the sport, its the 4 or 5 most popular sport on the Island, and I would say youth wise I put it in the top 3 being played. Younger generation are following it more than the older ones.

Islanders could draw anywhere between 1,500 to 6,000 at regular season matches, River Plate Ponce avgs anywhere between 500 to 3,000 per match, Sevilla Juncos in the 1k area, Bayamon FC in the mid hundreds(they are viewed as the Islanders B squad), after that the other teams are bearly supported. The local pro league only has 3 teams outside the metro area, and they are the ones that draw better because they dont have to compete with the Islanders.

I admire the Islanders, four years ago they were a joke in the A League and the  C'bbn. About two years ago they started going after foreigners big time, I think at one point there were three or four Trinis at the same time on the team. They stopped being a joke a long time ago. In addition they and Montreal can easilly hold their own with the best in the MLS.

My only question is since going after foreigners whole sale have they developed any talent at home.

VB

Clarke style of play has never called for the Hispanic style of play and so the Hispanic presence has dwindled in the past years, under him puerto ricans number about 3-4, same number of trinis in the team, with maybe 1 or 2 in starting positions, this year his playing all four in most games, so there has been pressure dropped on Clarke to increase the present of puerto ricans in the club. I can see him adding more of the younger college player he coached in the PR nat team in upcoming years, when they start graduating.

But on the topic on developing talent by themselves, no the academies on the island are sub-par, including the Islanders, better player usually go to soccer school in the usa and develop there. Clarke was named head of the Academy last year, lets see what comes out of that in the coming years.

Its all about visibility at this level of play, teams there like Jabloteh, JP, and W Con. are at the same level of play as most USSF D2 club, and probably way better than the bottom tier clubs. But no offense to Caledonia fans their teams isnt has big or recognized as does other three clubs I mention or the Islanders. So it come down to player exposure, Keon would get to play under a coach that has been in MLS that has contacts in the league, who's team is for the past three years been able to attract some attention to it internationally, most people in US soccer know who the Islanders are. Who play against two clubs who are joining MLS next year (Portland, Vancouver) and one that may join in 2012 (Montreal), several of the top Islanders players already have gone to this teams on the opportunity they may be brought up with the team to MLS. Las mamies and living in one of the trendiest part of town next to world class beaches does help entice players aswell, I know Kevon Villaroel has already bag himself a nice mamasity :D

If he excels he will make it to MLS, this year we had two players make the jump Dan Gargan to TFC and Arrieta to a starting position in Philly. To bad his not a keeper, Islanders keepers are assured the jump to MLS jaja.

No question, the only way to counter the abuse that dem taco-eating Ricans and Argentians dish out on we boys in we country as displayed in the video (not to mention the Argentinians and Rians pelting objects in to the stands) is for us to see it as an issue of national dignity at stake and NEVAH! allow another international club contest go by without us turning out in real threatening numbers to ensure that they doh take we for joke. I will not apologize for saying this as it will happen again if we doh see the light. Iz not Oliver's problem or Peltiers or "dah-local-fellah-who-is-a-shittong" 's problem, Iz OUR problem. Can you dig it?  >:(

Chill brother, theres only like 2 puerto ricans in the entire river squad thats a argies team, run and funded by argies from a town most puerto ricans dont even like. Most PRican who follow footy are Islanders supporters and have nothing but respect for trini and their players they are important to us and we just signed another trini this week.

Directos a Trinidad

Add another trini to the list of making the jump to the Orange Troops. The last line of that report basically says that the Islanders are expecting to leave Trinidad with Keon Daniel ready to join the club immediate.

39
I would say Osei has done well to come back from that year long injury and is starting to get back in playing form.

I figured Jack would probably be concerned of any River Plate fan retaliation, they have a pretty well organized supporters group and could call up maybe a hundred people to come up to taunt Jabloteh. Which could also trigger clashes with Islanders fans as River Plate is our biggest rival, funny thing is we have never played against each other, but there alot of bad blood between fans. This is all hypothetically speaking.

It just sucks because of this we dont get to see the islanders play at home for over three weeks. Well atleast the Islanders are trying to bring their own recording and broadcasting team to record the games just incase anything happen and to provide the Islanders fans with a live feed to games in trini which have always be frustrating due to lack of media converge. Which also mean you trinis outside the island could have a chance to watch this games live.

Yes there is definatly going to be sactions on both side, I believe River will get the heavier fine/sanctions because of their racist remaks and more violent behavior.

What actually bothers me the most is the desicion to move the rest of the tournament to trini, right after the incident. What's the thinking behind this? Now PR teams have to carry a economical burden they where not expecting to, get visas on a short notice and it could also carry the justify or not fear of retaliation towards them because of being Puerto Rican. Security is a top concern it look like there wasn't enough security/police presence to control the situation.

The PFL site have about an extra minute of it and you could see dem men stoning the crowd and getting away with it. They were basically ignoring the guards.

The guards real lapse.  Those players shoulda been arrested for that.

This is something that perplexes me and I'm not trying to instigate anything but, where did the stones come from? Soccer pitches arnt suppose to have any stones on it or at least not big enough to even be noticeable?.

Relax my brothers, River has only two Puerto Ricans in the entire team, its a argi run team with the only thing puerto rican being their fan. This in no way reflex the attitude of Puerto Rican player or teams. The Islanders have gone to trini twice now and have had no mayor incident to date. We Islanders fans have nothing but the up-most respect for our trini brothers, they are a integral part of the team and will continue to be in the future as more trinis are rumored to be wanting to sign for the club. This is a regretfulness incident and makes both PR an Trini look bad, it already has been posted by mayor sport newsites all over the world.

But the Islanders and Bayamon FC are still concerned by any resentment created by this incident in the trini population towards puerto rican teams. Especially now that Uncle Jack has changes the final round from Puerto Rico to trini a day after the incident happened.

This isn't the first time this has been said. The USL consistently send teams to the US Open Cup Tournament semi finals and have had teams in the finals recently. No to mention Rochester winning the entire thing back in the late 90's. The perceived notion that the USL is a 2nd Division League to the MLS is a bit much to be compeletely honest. And with USL teams beginning to 'employ' players year round, the MLS will have a much bigger problem in a few years...

How to differentiate themselves from the so called 2nd Division football league in the US?

Don't let the salaries of the MLS players fool you either. There's lots of talent in the USL that get more than enough playing time and experience to build their confidence and improve their abilities. I remember one of the players on the Puerto Rico roster dumping the MLS for USL due to reasons above. He's now playing in the CCC semi's. And PR Islanders established themselves in 2004. In less than 5 years they've reach the qualified for the USL playoffs 3 times, were in the finals last year and have surpassed all expectations in reaching the CCC semis. And it could have been two if L'Impact de Montreal didn't blow their match against Santos. MLS watch de ride.

Blessings and enjoy de night.
Richard G.

Yes I remember Jay Needham was the league rookie of the year with us and got a nice contract in Norway.

ON CCL related news, Telesford is a no for the matched against Cruz Azul, his injury hasnt fully recoverd as fast as they hoped and the coach wants him fit for league play. Villaroel is looking good at LB and may steal the starting position away from American Scott Jones. Jaggy dont even get me started on that kid him and Addlery are defenetly gona make defenders tremble in league play, look out for the Caribbean Goal Machine!

Man I'm just happy that he recovered from that massive head injury during the playoffs last year, when I saw him hit the ground I seriously though he was dead. He didn't move at all during the period they took him from the field to the ambulance. Pretty solid player usually, the team just need to shack its pre-season rust out.

I have not had the pleasure of seeing Villaroel play yet and i don't think he will play in this CCL run at all since his new to the squad unless something happens to our left back. I know that our coach has  had his eye on him since the series against Jabloteh, I heard he played very well in it.

I heard rumors that Telesford may be ready for the second leg and if not he will be ready for the first leg of the semifinals if we make it. That should help us close down our midfield.

This team should be called the Caribbean Islanders, Haitians, Trinidadians, Puerto Ricans and Jamaicans we got them all  hehe

Great showing from the jaggy especially since he arrive at camp like two weeks ago because of the nat call up. Its 3 goal at the CCL level and during the 2008 he was just a joy to watch play the kid got speed, stamina and some nice footwork.  His defiantly getting alot more play time this year
