Bakes -- yuh hav to be careful when you mention dat era over another era...because yuh might start a war!

Coming from that time myself..I jes remember when thousands used to go to a "high school" game ...more people used to go to college games than they do for the national team now!!

I surprised a certain friend of yours in chime een and start talking about Malick..blah blah blah...maybe if I mention that CIC was everybody fadda in the North, before Malick rise with Shawn David and Dwarika...maybe that will draw a certain person out??!!  or St. Anthony's with Miguel Mitchell and Evans Wise...that side was rell tempo..remember when Mitchell make Ian Briggs kneel down in the stadium with a drag!!!!

ole talk aside... real players came out of that era. Alot of good teams.

35
I've seen KJ play the outside midfield position to a decent effect and he was effective but at the time he was a different player ...different attitude. He has fallen back as a player and is definitely not an option for the center mid ... kj started off as a defender and has nothing near the understanding, touch or creativity that make men like Yorke and Rougier good options in the centermid position. His touch is poor as is his newly acquired work ethic (or lack thereof)  ..... personally I'd bench him ... because the thing that seems to be affecting his game doesn't appear to be lack of ability but rather lack of application (effort , desire , motivation). That attitude is the difference between making a career and breaking it and trust me when I tell you if he doesn't improve Bruce will ship him out wether we  like Bruce or not he's just seeing the things in him that we are seeing in him as well .. plain talk bad manners

ps Yorke attitude got him to man u and his attitude got him out of there a tale of two cities I guess.
Well that about sums it up - mental toughness.  If KJ does not have that passion in him...then he could have all the potential in the world.. he will be mediocre at best.  It is someting I personallly cannot understand...why train, diet, sacrifice..to be a professional player...and then have a bad attitude?   makes no sense.  Nothing like ridin a lil pine to wake a player up....however - if he does not have passion or pride, that may just be a small ting..no scene .."I still getting paid"

I think T&T has the players (somewhere) to compete, because let's be honest...the US (concacaf power) doh play no real brand, their players are not great....but they work hard and are mentally engaged in the game, commited.

Davidson joined that squad right before the team went to Portugal.  When they brought in the big guns (Yorke, Sherwood) to make up the Portugal team.

I was one of the last men dropped from the team (that was part of the Portugal nucleus) that was selected to play in the CFU U16 tournament - I was "competing" with Nixon for that left outside mid/forward position ...and could not defend well enough to play left back...so I saw the axe.  The experience was good though.  I remember sweating in that room in camp, as they announced the players selected - Wesley Webb was the last one to make it ...me and two other players - not so lucky.

I say "competing" - because you would remember that back in those days...Jerren was an absolute beast!!...

37
AM - True true...his touch - right now - is not sublime enough to boss the midfield.  I guess my suggestion was just based on the fact that there are not very many options for that role right now.

The fella has potential though.  As a target man though, I see that as a very limiting role, as it is played by Sunderland. All they do is hoof the ball long for him to flick on - Predictable!!! ...all defending teams have to do is track the runners of the ball and they will win in right back.  Other target players ...Crouch, Ibra, Drogs...could receive a ball TO THEIR FEET and get involved in the possession game.  Why Bruce is not implimenting that is another question. I suppose it is because of the quality he has behind his stikers.  There is no midfield.

For me, you need a bess holding midfielder, a creative mid and 2 wing backs that can play end line to end line, to be successful in today's game.  Outside mids have to be fit and able to attack the end line and serve the ball, while central defenders, must be able to defend one v one...and be comfortable with the ball at there feet.  Ferdinand, for example, is so comfortable..that he tried that audacious flick in the Manchester derby... where Bellamy intercept and went on the embarrass him for pace and finished well....  gone are the days of just being able to hoof the ball out.

The lack of hustle of the Senior team - IMO, has to be fitness and a lack of confidence.  The movement of the ball is poor..and that speaks more to the lack of confidence in the man with the ball.  I have always told my players that, the run dictates the pass.  If you make the run (off the ball), the man on the ball will try to deliver (his brain sends his foot that message).  If there is no run made .. the pass (if it comes)...is hopeful and lacks real purpose.

Our players must develop technically.  Bottom line.

Right now, I just want them to survive in the top flight.....This demotion thing eh go wok....Men like Motty cussing and Mickey rolling over in he grave....Come on Arima....leh we do it.....

Man call real name dey boy... Motty Haynes, know how long me eh hear dat man name.  Yuh remember Neil DeSilva... he mighta been a couple years before Motty and dem.  He was another fella from Valencia... was on de 92 or 96 4x400 Olympic team.
Of course, I knew Neil personally....  Neil actually played the year before I went to Arima but he was blazing fast.  In my opinion, Motty Haynes was the greatest scorer of all time in colleges league....Un"freaking"believeable....the man score 44 goals in one year....Bake yuh hear that 44....I eh think nobody come close again but I could be wrong....

Arima - I think Jason Rocke had 30'somting in the all competitions back in 91 or 92 .... but 44 is madness..  I know you well "net up" in your days to though.

Ah college league...how I miss dem days!!  Hope the league returns to the status it had back in '85 through about '92....(I am sure in other eras too)...but during that time you had rell ballas dread!!

 :beermug: :beermug: to memories.
Motty score 44 in 85, the same year Sando Tech mash up everybody.  How I know that is because Motty tell me if I break his record he was going to give me a $500....I told him no way I am getting close.....Ah reach exactly half though LOL.....

If Motty had change like that he coulda give yuh $250 for half!!! lol.

Man those were the days.  The rivalries were true.  The emergence of Signal Hill..to follow Tech's dominance..the Green Machine.. Blue Thunder...  before I started playing for (Saints) ..I would run down Frederick St..jump in the 1st maxi and head East to watch Gustine play.. I would wait for the CIC result on Panorama..but I had to see Gustine play live!!...

Arima.. you are a intercol standout, so I cyar understand how yuh try to mash mih up on the other post.  Come nah man...leh we keep the standard high!!

start all the u-20 team. let them get even more experience. only call back Kenwyne, birchall, and Glen (if healthy).  Leave out all who over 30, including carlos
Thompson is our future Carlos. Lets ensure from now he could cross the ball. Would be good to see him playing inside of Carlos on de flank....

My Side...
               G. Samuel

Carlos  Abu   Lawrence   Samuel

Thompson  Tinto  Noel   Hector

                 KB   KJ

subs... Lawrence will get tired / JJames - Hector is inexperienced / Daniel - Kerry Baptiste go bun / Zamora

That is the side there, although I would be surprised if any of the U20's get a start.  So a squad like this might be more realistic:

                      Phillips
Carlos --- Lawrence -- Abu Bakr -- Samuel

Tinto --- K. Jones --- Noel --- Hector

             Zamora -- Scotland

People must remember that Lawrence is the skipper, so he will start at the back.  I know there will be rumbling about Jones in the mid - but why not?   Once he can be convinced to work hard in there, I see know reason why we can't groom him as an option there.  Plus many folks have said that he is not a striker, but he definitely factors in our future ...why not as a mid?

Thomson will be the 1st player off the bench for Tinto - around the 70th minute
Baptiste for Scotland - around the 70th
Primus or James for Hector - same time (move Carlos to the left flank)

 :beermug: Go T&T
Clearly you have never really played the game and are simply just a fan of the game.....to insinuate that KJ can play center mid does really even deserve a response.....

Ah Arima ...I en lookin for you in dat...May I suggest that you pump your brakes with that kind of remark.  Coming from you that is a real surprise ....as a forumite that typically, actually makes sense on here.

To respond - I have played the game, certainly not at the level you have, to warrant entry into the HOF  ... I may have actually played against you at some point in Trini (did you play with Millington and Emmanuel) and definitely at JMU. I was actually in Bertille's U16 camp with those fellas..along with Nixon, Moze, Pacheco, Belize, Gullop..etc

With that said, I would definitely put my knowledge of the game, up against anybody on this forum.  I may take a loss here and there -- but as they say.."you win some you lose some"

My suggestion of playing KJ in the mid, comes after reading on here at some point, that he has actually played there before...and him playing as a striker, could be percieved as playing him out of position.

Let me use Dwight Yorke as an example - a true balla - who started as a striker...and as his career progressed evolved into a pretty decent midfielder.  Why then can  that not be the path for KJ?  He has the tools, but does he have the mental toughness required to reach his potential?  .... I am of the belief that if you understand the game and are sound technically - you can play (and be effective) anywhere on the field, so it comes down to the mental iron of the player (but that is just me)

Arima, what you need to understand about me sir ...is that I can actually deal with being wrong, about a suggestion or comment I have made on this forum...without taking it personal..and want to rough men up, over the internet (see Just Cool for reference)... I recognize you as a balla, and as such, respect is due.  However, I would suggest keeping to your rep as a reliable source and not toe the line, crossed by many, and get engaged in throwing insults and other nonsense.

If playing KJ in the mid is so offensive..then I task you to find that next creative, impactful midfielder that we assign a nickname that implies that he is magical (see RL for reference)...

Cheers and nuff respect.

I had my doubts about Latas eh, but I'll say this, after watch last night's game, I will prefer to see them forget about nuff ah dem foreign based, and let Latas develop a core of local based into a TEAM.

Keep JLloyd, Birchall, Carlos. Tell Kenwyne to handle he stories at Sunlun and wish him well. Pick up the  men on the U20 and leh we push on to 2014 with dat startin now.

Oh, one more thing, tell Daniel if yuh ever ketch him anyway near where de national team training, we go have to do him sumting devious. STAY WAY!

Other dan dat, give Latas a chance with de local youths. I firmly believe now, after watching last night, dat a TEAM of locals, given time with Latas and Yorke, go be much better dan de fragmented bullshit we gettin when dem foreign based ride in 2, 3 days before a game. I think we could be good enuff to run with de best in de hex by 2014 qualifying.

Give Latas & Yorke a chance! Let dem start now, run some friendlies and watch de ride.

Watch de ride to not even makin de Hex.

Our BEST players will ALWAYS get contracts abroad and go abroad to ply their trade because it's simply not good enough here.

So you REALLY think a squad of players who are NOT OUR BEST PLAYERS playing in our inferior league will somehow do better?

LOL!

I happen to believe that given time to play together, they will do better than a "pick-up" squad of foreign based players... yes!
Just my opinion dred.

How good did our Best Premiership Striker do last night and any other night?
Wham Slates ..how you emotional so?  Like yuh wha men like JC mash yuh up or wha??  ;D  Man rock so wit dat local side nah man!!  ...I don't see a problem with men that like the whole star boy ting and choose to run when they want to.

I remember people commenting on video clips of the team in training, and saying that the pace is too slow, to laid back...well... if you practice that way, then there should be no shock when we play games in the same manner.

Watching Mex/Honduras last night, men flying to the ball defensively to CLOSE DOWN SPACE (see Clark goal for the opposite of)....offensively, the passing is accurate and played with the right weight ...the 1st touch is always positive..the 2nd touch is looking to do something ..(see K. Daniel for "dilly dally") ...  football with PURPOSE. When my 11 yr old son, who now start to kick ball could say "why isn't Trinidad better technically?"  "why are they just kicking the ball long and hoping for someone to make a play one v. one?" ...then ..hmmmm.

I am proud that my country was in the mix to make the Hex and vie for a spot in the WC.  We are not a serious football nation, so must have realistic expectations.... look at the stadiumm las night!!?? ..more people going to a Machel concert.  Until we get serious and develop our players ..Technically, Tactically, Physically and Psychologically...we will be mediocre in football...yes we might make the occasional "run" on the backs of our "star" players (see DY and RL) and the Godfathers "gifts" (see JW)....but there will be very little substance to what we are doing.

No sense criticizing the players...they are human beings...we get away with what we are allowed to.  If no standard is set with regards to the 4 elements above..then we will accept anything.  The team lacks leadership right now and it is glaring - the coach whoever that is..wherever he is from, has to set the standard, and must have players that are accountable to those standards.  A healthy mix of youth and veteran players, should lend for more leadership on the field...but we are not seeing it.  Ince and Edwards, seem to be more vocal than others...but cussing and waving your hands at a man, does not constitute leadership.

So, with that said...I hear yuh bredda Slates, the locals seem hungrier than the foreign based....but for me, all I want is a team of players that TAKE PRIDE IN WEARING THE COLORS and are willing to work for everything.  We are a minnow people, will always be, so why don't we play with a chip on our shoulder?? An example of that is Jamaica - they too are minnows in the football ting, and for all the talk they get about being undisciplined and wild...their effort and "chip" is unquestioned...I think we could do with a dose of that...players and admin that are willing to say enough is enough, tired of average players like Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley..to come to Trinidad and "dan it up" and say what dey want, assuming that playing T&T is a easy 3 pts.

More Pride.  >:(

Football / Re: Views on T&T v Hon game (05-Sept-09).
« on: September 08, 2009, 10:16:21 AM »
Wow...a lot of emotional and educated views. Sometimes even both in the same post.

Despite all the love and support for the warriors, I haven't seen anyone stating the brutal and blatant truth....I believe I may have said it in an earlier post....our team is simply not good. Not for local, regional and definitely not international football.

The writing has been on the wall ever since we limped into the 06 world cup.

Only Beenhakker, a determined yorke and an inspirational latapy had anything do with that qualification. As soon as they got even further on in age, that was the end of our football.

I keep seeing posts saying how Daniel is so talented and promising, and I keep asking myself if these ppl are serious?

Daniel has never done anything on any level except score against some below par and jokey teams. He plays like he has worms and is in dire need of a zentel. Imagine getting 6 corners and doing absolutely nothing with any one of them. Yet he plays 90 mins.

Marvin Andrews is more pastor than player. Not that anything is wrong with that, but he was never good with a ball at his feet. Remember the game is football not head ball.

From the minute I heard that Theobold was starting I watched Arg vs Bra on setanta. Trinidad and Tobago could never be serious if he's on the team. A midfielder making no positive contribution to any game, offensively or defensively, is no midfielder to be on any team.

As someone posted, Carlos shows consistently why he is a championship player nad not a premier league player. As much as I love Carlos, no right sided player, especially a winger/midfielder, worth his salt, will be so piss poor at crosses.

What is Kerry Baptiste to do again? In form, scoring all the goals and cant get a fair look in the national team. Why do we play football then? Its these things that demoralise players.

Ppl cry down Kenwyne Jones, but his presence is didturbing to defenders. He plays at about 80% for us, and it appears that the coaching staff knows it but is comfortable with it.

Glenn is a great impact player, just not from the start. He will do well against tired legs. Any one who has seen him for game after game will notice a tendency to fall to ground when under pressure. Its a tactic he uses to excuse himself from anonymity.

Latapy, has the heart for the coaching job. I think we should persevere with him so he can get the experience to perfect the art. He chops and changes the defence too often, and doesnt seem to have the ability to be practical rather than hopeful. A trait that Beenhakker showed ruthlessly.

Trent Noel made little forward passes. Thats our player of the year?

At one time, we were 3 down and had a free kick, and a couple of our players were smiling (I saw a laugh but doubted it so much that I cant categorically state it). That sums up our attitude perfectly....World cup on the line, licks in we ass and we happy.

We mirror the WI cricket team almost exactly....we are simply NOT GOOD.

2014 anyone?

 :applause:

Well said.

The team is not good enough as it stands today.  I do believe we do have players - across the globe - that can represent the country and vie for a spot in Concacaf.  Players that are committed to the colors only!  Imagine Birchall is an import and has more desire - not as much skill - but desire to give his all, than our nationals?

Look at the Strike Squad? - - beyond Latas and Yorke, how many superstars did we have on that TEAM?.. the other players understood their roles ...TRUSTED each other and went out there and played for the COUNTRY.

Say what you want about Gally - that team had chemistry and an identity.  That was must-see football, now - going to the NT play..is just something to do for most..a lime..

Beenie had a decent handle on things leading up to Germany ..but it was a different style of play to the 89 team.  He brought organization and discipline.  Latas has a vision but must have the proper level of support from the administration, the players and the fans.

Development is a process - not an overnight thing -  when you are a minnow in this football world....you must be willing to fight and claw for everything..a chip on the shoulder is a minimum requirement. On a world scene - how many of our players have earned "star boy" status?  Ever? - - IMO, the answer is 3 (Latas, Yorke, Shaka) ...everybody else is a role player.  Until our players start acting like professionals and have pride in wearing the colors...we will be mediocre at best.

Good post DT  :beermug:

That is what I was hopin' to hear "...MLS ..crap ..league" - - but for us is still playin ball in foreign .. do our Pro(fessional) League players have agents? That try to secure contracts overseas?

How old a fella is Baptiste??  Is he on the right side of 30?  ....  real insult to us over-30 fellas that still feel as though we could still put een a good shift of football!!

When I see Adebayor drag between them 2 defenders de odder day ...ah jump up yes. Ah recognize dat as one of my "Iusedtobeabletododats"! .... say wah, memories!

KB is 28.  He was always primarily used as a wing player because of his speed and decent crossing ability.  This is the first year he has been unleashed as a striker so up til now for many this would stand as a surprise.  He has had stints on our national teams before and if you hear some tell it, he doesn't belong anywhere near a football pitch.  He hasn't had any trials that I have heard of but again he never played this role before.  I honestly feel given his attributes and current form he should be the first forward off the bench when a change is needed upfront.  But I am in the minority by far on that as most folks seem to believe that he had his chance.  Funny some of the same folks wailing and knashing teeth for Scot Sealy who has had much more opportunities with very little to show for it.  As far as MLS goes is not always that the players make more there, so when given the choice some stay here and play rather than go foreign to play ball and ketch ass.

Seen.

I say him play for JP when they played in the CCL against the Revolution last year and I thought he did some work on the right flank.  Seems to have a good attitude and work rate too ..which cannot be said for all our players that get a significant run..(eg. Daniel).  Even if he not spelling one of the fwds..he could come off the bench and play ah wing??  Fact is - our forwards are not producing (other than Glen).. It would be interesting to see the path forward for T&T football after the Hex - in preparation for 2010 or 2014.

Maybe he just comfortable where he is and does not have any desire to play overseas.  To each his own - cyar tell de big man what to do.

It would be nice though to see our players reaching for higher though.   :-\

Looking at the PFL scoring leader table - it appears that Baptiste has golden boot locked down, with 30 goals!!

How is it that he is not at least one of the 1st men off the bench for the Warriors?  Is it purely because he  is scoring against weak PFL defenses?  or the strikers in front of him just that good and would have 60 goals at this point, if they were playing in the PFL??

Is Baptiste good enough to play overseas?  (eg. MLS, Championship, League One) -- How could he be rippin the PFL and not be on somebody's radar?

Interesting. :-\

Head Coach Russell Latapy, his technical staff and eleven home-based professionals left Piarco International Airport for Honduras via Miami at 8am on Monday. The team will have its first training session on Tuesday at 3pm at the Francisco Morazan Stadium in San Pedro Sula .

True true ..is I who look fuh mih ting!!.... Lucky for me, you believe that "the pen is mightier the sword", imagine a bad man like you with a sword, we woulda see you in 300!!... you seem educated, calling me passive aggressive and ting... so go up bredda ..victory is yours.

Life (still) Good though.

Football / Re: What is our SW captain doing right now?
« on: July 22, 2009, 08:26:01 AM »
Birchill for Yorke  is the answer. Put Daniel next to memum on the left with Colin samuel/ jagdeo on the left wing. Tinto on the right and let us bring yorke for the last twenty minutes to hold up the lead we will have.
Jlloyd samuel as right back with Abu bakr Tallest Avery. Ince in goal. S/A here we come.

KJ and Stern up front- with Glen as the super sub.

At some point yes - but CB is not ready to lead us in the middle of the park just yet.  This is a forum full of passionate football people, so I am sure that common sense will prevail at some point with some of the remarks made here.

Yorke is the only player we have currently, with the ability to lead, which makes him an automatic pick.  He is able to settle our team down and instill a bit of confidence in our less experienced/talented players.  The "frenism" theory is rubbish in my opinion and the call for him to come off the bench ..even more so.  If he cannot play a full 90, then that is another question.  The coach however must assess a players' impact on the game and make the appropriate adjustments.  If the situation calls for DY to play 90, then so be it.  If the situation calls for a different player in that role, then the coach inserts that player.

The game is a technical / tactical game..if you can execute the game plan with some consistency - you play...regardless of your age.  Simple as that.  We have too many players that are still developing in both areas (technical and tactical) ....or in other words...men that cannot consistently (simply) keep possession of the ball.   Yorke has excelled at both for years.  "Frenism" only applies when there is little or no justification for the pick.  Yorke even in his golden years, is still a level above.  Until one of our young players..emerges as that leader of men - then we have to live with 2 out of 5 sub-par performances from the greybeard.

With regards to BC - his commitment to the team is unquestioned and in that light he is ahead of the rest in terms of being a leader on the field.  To be honest, he should be the next captain.  However, technically, he is not ready to feature in midfield.  We cannot play through him, the way that we can with DY.  Watching his game vs. AC Milan and against New York last week, I thought his passing while accurate, was not effective.  He needs to develop some pause in his game.  Pause (see Pirlo, Deco, 'Dihno, Latas) is basically not settling for the first pass you see, when you have time and space to take an extra touch and survey the field for better options. As a center mid, your job is to link the 3rds and put players in a position to do something positive with the ball.  Look at DY - how often is he rushed into making an inaccurate or ineffective pass? ... look at our other players and ask the same question.  The answer would be very few to too often.

Bottom line is that if Yorke is deemed match fit - then he should play until he is no longer effective.  The younger players on the team have to raise their games, so that if DY is off..a high level of play can be sustained.

What we need to do is understand and replace the players that are generally ineffective.  Play the men that have technical and tactical awareness...even if they are played out of there normal positions.  Players are players, if they are comfortable on the ball, they can play ANYWHERE on the field.

Who are our most technical and tactical players?

Lifeisgood I understand all about why people doh like USA coz after 89 I hated the bastards more than any place on earth but I came to my senses.I honestly feel that it would be a great fillip for USA to beat Brasil on Sunday.
For too long CONCACAF been treated like the CINDERELLA of the football world, even Asia get treated better.I now back all CONCACAF teams no matter who they play,I even back Jamaica when they play outside of the CONCACAF.I want our teams and players to be taken seriously and that will happen when CONCACAF START BEATING UP TEAMS OUTSIDE THE REGION.I dont understand the hero worship that the South Americans get when man kick 2 good ball, while our players play their bollocks off and dont get anywhere. One day when we beating people regular we players will be accepted.Nuff said!
Frico - well said sah...sorry I am now getting back to this. I agree, Concacaf gets very little respect and until.....(everything you said).....will get none.

I am just not ready to see the US carry the Concacaf flag...cyar back dem.  Waay too arrogant...have you seen and heard quotes of their players and coaches, when discussing their smaller Concacaf counterpart nations?  So we must respect them and pull for them..when it is not reciprocated? ... You think the american die-hard fan would give a rats a%% if Haiti was playing England?  They rootin for England patna!... So fire bun fi dem..

The universe has return to its rightful standing. Overhyped Brazil showed their class yesterday and IMO showed that they are the best in the world.  Even down 0-2, they did not necessarily change the way they play..they just played with a little more purpose...came out of 2nd gear as they say.  It could have been 6-0 at half ..and I think Brazil would have won the game 7-6.  That is the beauty of Brazil, never got flustered (a la Spain), they just kept playing..and yuh see.  As I said earlier for the sake of the Beautiful game..Brazil needed to deliver...because if not it any team that play a fit-corbeaux brand (a la US)  could go on a lucky run.  In 5 yrs we will all forget that the US came 2nd in this tournament (thank goodness)

Until US soccer becomes less classist -- they will only develop the occasional "good" team.  For a nation with so many international influences, there should be way more minorities playing ..but because competitive youth soccer is so expensive, you cut down your talent pool tremendously, because kids/families can't afford it.  The ones that can, act like they are the best..not based on talent, but on mom and dads bank account.

 :beermug: :beermug:

so when yuh say minorities, yuh mean black people right? not mexicans/west indians/central americans/south americans/etcs.....who exactly yuh mean does act like dey is de best, the boys themselves or de parents....doh get meh wrong yuh, i imagine posting based on your experiences and reality right, but as ah man who see it different it just interesting to me, mustbe whey ah living.
No sah ... my comment is not limited to black people... if it was, I would have said ("More black people") ... and yes, all I can speak of is from my experience.  I have been coaching in the US north east for the last 10 yrs..and could count on one hand, how many "minority" coaches, I have coached against.  90% of the players we have played against are non-minorities..  why is that?  My team plays at a high level, at highly regarded tournaments and leagues...and this is the mix of coaches / players that I have seen.

My point is that how is it for a US national team, that the national mix is not better represented?  Things may be different in your neck of the woods, but here..the fellas that could afford, generally rise to the top.

Now we could get into the discussion about how SOME minorities spend their money, the priorities they set and their planning for the future.  Is it a case of spending on XBox and Jordans, over signing up scholar-athlete Johnny in a sports program that could help pay for his future education?  ???

Is not really the expense that deters most yuh know.  Not saying it's cheap but the whole setup is designed for stay at home parents or those who have ah guardian to watch their children after school.  My son turning 5 and at 3 we was looking into the camps and leagues (might be premature for some) and we get to realize that there are 1. hardly any in or close to urban areas in this city and 2. they are mostly weekdays at times ranging from 1-3pm.  so it cut out all the working class people with children who interested or even show signs of natural telent that come from middle class family homes.
I hear yuh..but my experience to date is this.  I currently coach a U18 team that has been reasonably successful over the last 4 yrs.  The team was formed to get exposure for the players, and hopefully scholarships to play college ball.  Over the 4 yrs - just the team fees alone, averaged $1500 a yr...add to that the travel to the major tournaments..where the college coaches are... 3 nights in a hotel plus meals... 4 major tournaments....the cost adds up.

I have a 10 yr old that is showing signs of becoming a player - I coached his side as well over the last 2 yrs... so we got a break in team fees and obviously he is not at the age for attending "college showcases".  Now he has said he wants to play at a higher level and so we have to go to one of the big clubs in the state - I will not be coaching..so there is no "break".  We are looking at a $1200 bill for a U11 (academy team)!  -- this is to cover coaches, turf field rental, uniform..etc  Then you introduce supplimental training and Olympic Development programs etc....I could go on.

So yes, cost is an issue because it will not get any cheaper as he develops.  However, it is an investment in his future..if coupled with good grades - a must if there is to be any football - be can get scholarship money to pay for his college education ...then it is win-win..so players and parents must decide from a relatively early age in the US...is football for fun or is it a means to an end??

The U.S. did well.  It's as much as they could realistically expect from the crop of players that they have.  When you compare the personnel,  you have to say that they did well- and they finally got some help from the ref for a change lol...In the end the better team won, and yuh really have to tip your hat to Brazil for showing the patience & quality to claw back 3 (4  ;D) goals in 45 mins.

The glaring difference between a good solid outfit like the States and a World contender like Brazil is the manner in which they shift into 5th gear.  At the highest level of US intensity, it's a gritty, scrappy leave it all on the field style of play where they're literally fighting for every yard...and where they are more likely to lose that shape and balance, and eventually get caught out (or run out of steam whichever comes first)...When a team like Brazil takes it up a notch (Spain as well though they were unlucky not to score), they are better are maintaining a fluid cohesive team performance with every thing executed at a higher level of intensity.  There was a point in the game (roughly 10 mins before half time) where it was almost like Brazil said "ok let's take it up a notch"...and from that point on, they were playing at a higher level than the U.S. could deal with, and because it's more of a balanced collective shift in gears, they're still able maintain their shape and not get too caught out...they literally won everything in the middle of the field, to the point where B.Bradley had to take out Altidore, and crowd the midfield with Klejstan deep in the 2nd half to even have a shot at maintaining the ball and staying in the game.

That difference is a reflection of the quality (physically but more technically) of individual players...player for player, the States was outmatched...Hopefully for their sake, with time the U.S. will be able to fill their roster with higher quality players and be able to put games like yesterday's away.  Until then,  teams of the calibre of Brazil, Italy, Argentina etc will most times be "too good" for them...Still a step in the right direction for U.S. soccer nevertheless... no doubt about that- they should be quite proud of what they did in this tournament.

Good assessment, kicker. I agree with all of it.

Brazil just has too many weapons and we could only hold out for so long. You see the difference when the teams go to the bench for subs; Brazil brings on Elano and Daniel Alves, while the USA brings on Jonathan Bornstein and Conor Casey. We definitely have slim pickens by comparison.
Zeppo, you seem like a reasonable fella, with a love for the game..and no matter what you backin your side - the US.  I respect that.

The US got carried away yesterday IMO - in that emotion rather than tactics, took front yesterday.  The coaching staff must bear the brunt of the criticism yesterday for blowing the 2 goal lead.  Which is like blowing a 20pt lead in the 4th qrtr of a bball game.  IMO the US should have sit Clark right in front of the back 4, in the 2nd half and played Donovan and Dempsey in more defensive/possession minded roles...play through them.  Instead, they continued to play relatively wide open and tried to attack, the way they opened the game.

1) Maicon had as many if not more touches on the ball than any other Brasil player in the tournament - move a player like Davies out there in the 2nd half, to contend with him.  Maicon IMO was the most valuable player for Brazil (after Fabiano ..goals win matches)
2) Sit Clark "in the hole" to protect the back 4, if he won it - play 2-3 football..link with the outside mid or center fwd, who would hold the ball with his back to the goal.  (Altidore should have never come off)
3) Get your playmakers on the ball - I would have given Donovan more freedom to be disruptive on the defensive end, to help you win possession, an be an outlet for the backline.

Bottom line - more discipline was needed on the defensive side of the ball.  Maicon was allowed too much freedom in the 2nd half.  The Americans got greedy ..and may have actually thought.."hey we scored 2 goals against a "suspect" Brazil defense..let's blow them out"....the coaching staff did not make the necessary adjustments.  I am not saying to just go into a shell..play yuh football ..but you have to take something away from what the other team is trying to do.  Limit Maicon, crowd Kaka and 'Binho - let other players beat you.
