FC Dallas signs World Cup goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.

FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas announced today the signing of Trinidad & Tobago 2006 World Cup starting goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. Hislop joins FC Dallas from English Premier League club West Ham United, with which he played 25 games during the recently completed 2005-2006 season including in the FA Cup Final in May, 2006.
"This is an exciting new challenge for me," said Hislop. "I went to school in the United States and have a lot of respect for soccer in the country. I look forward to bringing my experience to a great organization and help FC Dallas win championships in America."
Hislop has had a tremendous summer to date. In May, he led West Ham to the Football Association Cup (FA Cup) final against Liverpool. Having tied 3-3 in regulation, Liverpool pulled out the victory by a 3-1 margin in penalty kicks. A month later, Hislop was in goal for his country at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. On June 10, Hislop's made numerous game-saving stops to give Trinidad a historic shutout against a powerful Sweden side. Five days later, he started against England, keeping a clean sheet for 83 minutes before falling 2-0.
Hislop was born in London and moved to Trinidad with his family when he was two years old. From 1988-1992 he attended Howard University in Washington D.C., playing goalkeeper all four years for the Bisons. In his freshman year, Howard advanced to the NCAA Division 1 College Cup final, losing 1-0 to Indiana. He graduated in May 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
Having an English passport, Hislop was offered an opportunity to play professionally in England. After college, he was drafted by the Baltimore Blast, a professional indoor soccer team. In an exhibition game against Aston Villa in Birmingham, he was spotted by a scout from Reading FC. He signed and made his professional debut with Reading in the English Second Division against West Bromwich Albion on September 9, 1992 and helped the team get promoted to the First Division following the 1993-1994 season. In his third season, he led the club to a second place finish, narrowly missing out promotion to the English Premier League (EPL).
Following his success at Reading, he was transferred to Newcastle United of the EPL on August 10, 1995 for 1.575 million pounds, then an English record for a goalkeeper. He went on to play 126 games over three years with Newcastle and then signed with West Ham United for the 1998-1999 season. After four seasons with West Ham, Hislop was signed by Portsmouth of the First Division for the 2001-2002 season, where he was coached by current FC Dallas goalkeeping coach Alan Knight. Hislop helped the team gain promotion to the top flight after his first season, and kept the team in the Premiership for his next two campaigns.
After a trial at Crystal Palace, Hislop re-signed with West Ham - which had just been promoted to the Premier League - on July 29, 2005. He played 25 games for West Ham during the past season, including seven games during the run to the FA Cup final.
On the international front, Hislop made his first international appearance for England's U-21 team, playing against Switzerland in March 1998 as one of three overage players allotted to each team. He was also called in to an England 'B' game against Chile on February 10, 1998, though he did not see action. Having never played a FIFA sanctioned game for England, Hislop made his international debut with Trinidad & Tobago on March 28, 1999.
In April 2005, Hislop was recognized as the recipient of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) Special Merit Award for his continued involvement with the "Show Racism The Red Card" campaign, which he helped start in 1996 as a way to keep racism away from soccer.
Hislop, will occupy the teams fourth senior international slot will join the team pending visa approval once the International Transfer Window opens on July 15. His full name is Neil Shaka Hislop. He is married and the couple has four daughters.

Lara considers quitting captaincy

Brian Lara dropped a bombshell last night. He might be about to throw in the towel as West Indies captain - again. Frustrated by the turn of events since his appointment as captain for a third time, Lara revealed he would be reviewing his position in the coming days.

In a dramatic disclosure, he announced he had received a letter from the West Indies Cricket Board on the eve of the fourth Test match against India informing him he had been a member of the selection panel since May 28.

"There is a meeting coming up in a week and depending on who the selectors are, I'll definitely revisit my decision to captain the West Indies team," Lara told stunned reporters after West Indies lost the Test by 49 runs at Sabina Park, giving India a 1-0 series win. "It's painful what has gone on in the last couple of months, not just the Test matches, but the one-day matches. I have West Indies cricket at heart, but it's a situation where my reputation as a captain is being dragged down."

Throughout the series, Lara complained about not getting the teams he wanted and also expressed displeasure at not being a member of the main selection panel. As it turned out he was, but he never knew until last Thursday. "I made a couple of phone calls, and I'm totally blanked on certain situations," he said. "As captain, and not knowing I was a selector, I have to accept and move forward. "It did not affect my mood going into this Test match. I knew that I had a job to do, but these little inefficiencies are not becoming of a team or a board that wants to move forward."

On occasions, Lara said, his "hands were tied behind my back".

"I said in the press conference after St Lucia that in hindsight, the spinner should have played. Yet, two days later, he was dropped from the entire 14. How do you work these things out? You had seven batsmen; all of a sudden, you have eight. What do you need eight for?"

2006 World Cup - Germany / Re: England vs Portugal
« on: July 02, 2006, 11:06:41 AM »
Now I dont know what exactly the wink was about but here's my view: Part of the game plan was to get under Rooney's skin --get him mad and let his temper get the better of him --Ronaldo was probably the one chosen to antagonise Rooney since Ronaldo knows him best. Big Phil is known for tactics like these and dont you guys remember when he said before the 2002 world Cup telling the Brazilians to go out and foul becuase the team that fouls most usually wins. Scolari is a wily coach and plays everything to his advantage--even if its a bit sinister like this one

Thank you someone talkning sense..this what i be saying

i prefaced what i was saying with the words "my view" and yes it is wid speculation..if he had pushed his hand in rooney's face ronaldo could have gotten a card too.. plus realise what i am saying--read my posts from before-- i think rooney is squarely to blame for losing his temper and that is what i said before so im not defending him -- i was just giving my view on the incident and ronaldo subsequently winking at the bench

What sense???... this is nothing but wild speculation. If Ronaldo's job was to get under Rooney's skin as you say why did he go to the ref and not just start pushing or shoving his hand in Rooney's face which would have been more effective??
Why did he not do anything else in that game to get under Rooney's skin???

Come on... Rooney lost it, plain and simple. He is the ONLY one to blame!

« on: July 02, 2006, 10:50:18 AM »
Fair enough, Zidane was better yesterday. But these two have been meeting twice a season ever since Ronaldinho moved to Barca. And Ronaldinho has been consistenly better in their club contests.

Fair enough but remember that Zidane has past his prime about 2 years ago so it is expected Ronaldinho should get the better of some exchanges..but even old man Zidane school him on taking a big game by the scruff of the neck and imposing himself. Zidane did in in the World Cup and champions League final..Ronaldinho didnt play particularly well in this Champions League final even though Barca won.
I real like Ronaldinho but he need to step up or else he'll never reach the undoubted greatness of Zidane. As of right now Zidane name could be pencilled in with Pele, Maradona, Beckenbauer and Platini (and maybe Ronaldo) as the greats of this sport. Ronaldinho still has a lot to prove to put himself there..lest he become another forgotten like Rivaldo

ronaldo is a drama queen we all know and he's that kind of player..did you really expect any better jub02?? it is squarely rooney's fault that he lost his temper because he knows what kind of person ronaldo is and he just should not have done anything so england's elimination from the world cup shouldnt be blamed on ronaldo..that is just ridiculous..
and please save me the story that england got robbed because did you feel at any point in this world cup that you said man england is playing well-- they deserve to win the world cup -- no i didnt think so.
England got their just reward for playing round mess during this world cup

I didn't hear anything about "family crisi". I heard that it was personal leave which is a bit different.

In any case it shows yuh where Djorkaeff rates playing in the MLS

Djorkaeff leaves Red Bulls for 'personal reasons'
Associated Press
SECAUCUS, N.J. - After telling the New York Red Bulls that he was leaving the team to handle a personal matter at home, French midfielder Youri Djorkaeff went to Germany to attend France's stunning victory over Brazil in the World Cup on Saturday.

"We were told by Youri on Thursday that he had to leave the team and attend to an unexpected, serious family matter in France," the Major League Soccer team said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

"As with any player in a situation like this, we granted his request with the understanding that he would rejoin the club immediately after the personal matter was resolved. At no point did Youri state that part of his trip was to attend the World Cup game between France and Brazil or that he had any ill-feeling toward the organization."

The team said it would address the situation as soon as possible.

Red Bulls spokesman Eric Tosi said Djorkaeff was shown on television at the stadium in Frankfurt during France's 1-0 win.

The 38-year-old Djorkaeff, a member of France's 1998 World Cup champion team, has two goals and three assists this season for the struggling Red Bulls (2-3-8), who are in last place in the Eastern Conference. He has started all 13 games and is second on the team in minutes played (1,135).

The Red Bulls begin a three-game road trip at New England on Saturday night before heading west to face Los Angeles and FC Dallas. New York fired coach Mo Johnston on June 27 and replaced him with interim coach Richie Williams.

Djorkaeff had returned for a second season with the Red Bulls, saying his decision was based in part on the club making Johnston its head coach.

Saturday's incident was similar to another involving a high-profile former World Cup champion of the MLS club, Lothar Matthaeus.

Matthaeus, who was hurt while playing in the 2000 European Championship, received permission to return to Germany and receive treatment for a back injury. However, German tabloid Bild found Mattheus and published a front-page photograph showing him and his girlfriend lounging on a beach in St. Tropez, France.

Matthaeus only played the 2000 season with the team, then known as the MetroStars.

Yeah I hadda back TI on this one..going with Samuels is typical West Indies stupidness..he does only show glimmers of talent. I for one hope I eat my words in the second innings for West Indies sake.. but I cyah stay quiet if West Indies throw way a good spinner AGAIN!! like how they throw way Dinas.
England stick with  Giles even when he was getting blade for so he end up getting big wickets for them in important series because they kept faith with him and continued to give him attacking fields. And I for one now Mohammed have more talent than Giles

carlos belongs in the prem.. the prem is the best league in the world with the fastest pace and you will have to learn how to handle the pace of the game.. if you could play in the prem you could make it almost anywhere. plus the prem forces you to be technically strong and trinidad needs players with technical strength and ability in addition to flair.

Del Bosque, loved the brand of football he promoted at real madrid

We have to be careful the people we want. Del Bosque worked well with a bunch of superstars. Now coaching a national team without superstars is an entirely different concept. In fact Del Bosque turned down national coach of Spain and it got handed down to Aragones. National coach is a much different thing from club manager and most coaches realise that eventually.

But I did love the football he promoted at Real

ALLYUH CAH SAY AUSTRALIA WAS BETTER DAN USA

amm why cant we say australia was better than the US?? from the way the US played I doubt they could have beaten any team in Australia's group. Australia could rest level licks on them anytime. I'm not a US hater neither a fan (if you read my previous posts about the US) but it just shows the height of ignorance that Bruce Arena has achieved to call Australia a weak team. Australia have nuff big players and a great coach

I agree with you TI. Insularity is ruining West Indies cricket although it has eased up a bit. The main problem is that the selectors are unwilling to use the regional tournaments as the criterion for selection for the West Indies team. This is crippling our regional game and making a mockery of die-hard cricket fans who follow regional cricket.

What does Richard Kelly have to do to be selected ahead of Marlon Samuels who has done nothing in the regional tournaments and continues to flatter to deceive? Why does a spinner not get a run in the team? It has to be insularity -- Omari Banks got an extended run in the team even though he leaked runs on a number of occassions. I have no problem with this since I believe that a spinner should be given a run especially if he has performed in the regional tournament -- I just think that Mohammed should also be given that opportunity.

Note that I used Trini's in my example but I am certainly not blindly pro-Trin in my arguments -- I actually supported dropping Ramdin for the one dayers because he was playing the fool and Carlton Baugh has shown he can hit the ball cleanly.

It is high team we get rid of this insularity cancer of West Indies cricket and start putting back our faith in our regional tournaments-- even if they are not up to standard yet-- and stop depending on the nebulous thinking of a bunch of old men.
West Indies cricket needs to move towards a system and away from this clique-ism and insularity.

I am very disappointed in Van Basten boy.  cyah lie bout that.  How you will let a personal disagreement with a player colour your choices on game day?

He has a lot of questions to answer.

As much as I am NOT a Man Utd. fan, how could you not play Van Nistlerooy in a game like that?

Yeah boy I loss real respeck for van Basten..great player..good coach. but a personal thing with van Nistlerooy cause you not to play him?? van Nistlerooy is a big game performer and even if he didn do the job at least you do your job as a coach. Right now van Basten screw his country over

That's bullshit. I know everybody in foreign countries think that.

But v. Basten has no problems with Ruud.
If you saw the other games, Ruud didn't play well and Kuijtt obviously trained better and deserved a chance.
Football is like that!

There were no problems in the Dutch camp.

http://home.skysports.com/worldcup/article.aspx?hlid=398167&CPID=4&clid=366&lid=13&title=Van+Basten's+Ruud+regret

Read between the lines nah. The article said Ruud was not happy with what van Basten said..and even if they didnt start Ruud he should have at least come off the bench with the team a goal down

805
the problem with coaching the US is that it offers no glamour..people really dont care about how the team do except for bout 2 million around World Cup time.. if you think about it, probably more than 2 million people does support Trinidad so a coach will consider that too - the lack of appreciation of the game in the US

Who's gonna pay his salary?

Scolari was unwilling to accept a lower salary dan Sven for the England job (Sven earns a basic salary of £5m a year). He rejected England's offer of £2.5m a year
