ballfever, yuh doh feel that the music now seems formulaic(sp) in that every year is de same jump and wave kinda thing. Few kaisoians can hold their own against Rudder when it comes to lyrics and melody etc(ah ent no music man eh so forgive me) but as a saco/calypso/kaiso aficionado ah have to say that the quality of music now is , to me, poor compared to a few years ago. Ah also hearing more and more ah meh pardnahs saying the same thing too.

Den too there is a lot of reggae influence in the soca that at times ah cyar tell which is which. and den this backside Beenieman come with he assness at WE soca monach show and gehing on...Only in Trini oui. >:(
Which is exactly my point...in making comparisons,we need to understand the nature of the beasts that we're dealing with. Our soca music(i'll deal with calypso later) is right now evolving into something that the die hards like the late Kitchener commented,"Call it what you want, but don't call it soca." Right now whether we want to accept it or not,the younger artistes are 'competition oriented', because that's where the money is for them....no huge following or recording contracts yet....and they look to what worked in the past...Superblue, Iwer, etc. for the formula, instead of trying to create something new, hence the proliferation of the 'jump and wave' in all its forms.(Bear in mind, I don't agree with it, but we need to understand why it is happening before we can chart a way forward.) Calypso is somewhat different, in that there was a period in the early 80's when very few true calypsonians were emerging, until the revolutionary Rudder arrived. We've just come through another such period, but in these cycles we seem to be losing the tact and wit that characterised the artform from its genesis. What we have now are calypsoes that are chucked full of information and worthy material, but not written in that delivery style to make us shout 'Kaiso Kaiso!' Believe me,we are on the way up, but have quite a way to go still.

I won't even dignify the Beenieman outburst with an answer. ???

Trininfinite,
I've read a few of your posts on our (mine & yours) music with utter amazement in some cases without a formal respone, but this one raise mih ire, as they say.
... having two artists like rudder and shadow only performing in tents and not releasing is not progressive for we music, while you have Sherwyn and other artists winning the road with music which in many ways is not quality material, quality calypso where time is spent on making lasting music.
Let me first tell you that I am speaking here as a calypsonian. Yes, I have been composing and singing calypso and soca for the past 8 years, and listening to it from as early as I can remember. My high point thus far came in 2004 when i walked away with $3000 cash and trophies for 1st place,Best Lyrics and People's Choice at a Calypso competition organised by my employers. The very Shadow you speak of was a guest performer at the show, and his advice to me after hearing that i copped the People's Choice award was, "Keep singing for the people. That award means much more than the 1st place trophy." I say all of this to tell you that comparing Rudder and Shadow's music to Shurwayne's is chalk and chesse in terms of the reasons for the compositions: Shadow and Rudder's music is people oriented, Shurwayne's and a number of other soca artistes are competition oriented (a different topic by itself that we can take up at another stage).
I don't think alot of people are noticing that are calypso tradition is dying... Calypso in itself is a dying tradition among the youths... Who will replace we great calypso artists like shadow and rudder?
Does the name Brian London mean anything to you? How about Roderick Gordon? Karene Asche? Stinger? Skatie? All young calypsonians who made the Dimanche Gras finals last night...d Big Yard...alongside legends like Chalkdust, veterans like Bro.Mudada and past monarchs like Singing Sandra and Luta.
...while you have Sherwyn and other artists winning the road with music which in many ways is not quality material...
I would really like to know which one of Shurwayne's road songs was not "quality material" in your estimation...

Just finish watching the International Soca Monarch & Groovy Soca Monarch finals...Shurwayne Winchester has copped both titles, :applause: finally beating Bunji Garlin into 2nd place in the Soca Monarch (Neil 'Iwer' George was 3rd!), and walked away with prize money, a car and a Germany World Cup package all totalling about TT$800,000.00!

General Discussion / Re: ATO sworn in as a UNC senator!!!
« on: February 14, 2006, 10:03:30 PM »
Open letter to a fellow forumite:
Ato, this is a statement of genuine concern from a genuine fan. I never saw you as one with political aspirations,( i thought that your decision to turn to broadcasting was a brilliant one) but then again, say what, to each his own. In this regard, I say congratulations on your appointment to the Senate, and I wish you the best in your journey to achieving your stated objectives. Our youth really do need a recognised voice at that level, and so I say to you, well done!

Let me state categorically before continuing that I hold no brief for either the PNM or the UNC. I vote because it is my constitutional right to do so, and I may be one of the minority in this country that actually vote based on issues and the individual candidate rather than propaganda and party. However, my concern lies with the party that you have chosen to represent at this time. By choosing to support the UNC at this time, you have inadvertently lent your support (and your good name) to:
* politics having a morality of its own, separate and apart from personal morality
* a dictatorship/maximum leader situation where one man rules supreme, and freedom of speech is likely to get you fired (I never liked the best bone in Robin Montano's body, but aren't there disciplinary procedures that can be followed when someone allegedly "steps out of line", or do we go straight for the hatchet?)
* supposedly brilliant colleagues (doctors, lawyers, etc.) who follow blindly manouvre after manouvre concocted by the then political leader (now party chairman), not supporting legislation in Parliament, designed to gain political mileage on the incumbent government, while the country goes to hell in a handbasket over the crime situation. Spineless professionals who prefer to stay quiet and be in their leader's "good books" rather than standing up and speaking out for what is right

You have voluntarily accepted the position and chosen to associate yourself, albeit inadvertently(i give you the benefit of the doubt) with some rather questionable phenomena occuring in T&T today. It is not for me to judge. Politics, the nasty game that it is, is like chess. Move after move, strategy after strategy, until eventually the masses have their say, and only time will tell whether your move at this time was to your benefit. We are heading into an election year. I ask you to remember the not too distant past, when similar high profile individuals were brought to the forefront:Winston 'Gypsy' Peters and Carlos John to name two.Where are they now, after having served the purpose of the puppetmaster?

I remain a steadfast fan of yours, not able to easily forget your olympic glory, but in the words of another forumite, Ato......
CHECK DE DANGER.....!

Football / Re: Warner meets FIFA ethics committee
« on: January 29, 2006, 07:13:03 AM »
FIFA vice-president Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF) special advisor Jack Warner has an appointment with FIFA's Committee for Ethics and Fair Play in February to discuss his involvement with the country's World Cup ticket sales.
The FIFA Media Department insisted that the meeting was arranged on the initiative of Warner. However, Warner's decision to inform the world organising body for football of his business ventures within the game came after FIFA declared an intention to have "potential conflicts of interest in relation to any ticketing constituent groups"investigated by "independent external auditors" Ernst & Young.
himself investigating himself....clearly an attempt to "deal" with the matter before E&Y auditors are called in.who dey tryin tuh fool? ???

Football / Re: Warner Denies WC Ticket Allegations
« on: January 24, 2006, 07:51:08 AM »
I have done this because I have always felt inferior to be a Vice President of FIFA and to be a deputy chairman of a FIFA finance committee among my colleagues in FIFA as someone who comes from a country that has never qualified for FIFA’s highest competition.

All this tells me is that JW has a problem with occupying second place in anything....so look out FIFA and UNC!
As such we went on to qualify and as we qualified, we had two weeks of honeymoon. I was King, they said Jack for Prime Minister and so on and then it was felt that this kind of popularity was of course catapulting the opposition and I was being seen as a threat (as also deputy leader of the Opposition Party), bringing all the people together. To fast track it, it just went on to the local newspapers who got one of their journalists to carry on the task.

Felt by whom? Wha f*ckin planet dis man on boy?
”Its allocation came only last week but this was done to destroy Jack Warner in some way. They believe I am close to Mr (Sepp) Blatter, which I am, and they are bringing out this book, but let FIFA deal with that. I sleep very sound at nights. They have also spoken about scandal and corruption. He (The Writer from T&T) had applied for accreditation and he was turned down and there’s a big story in today’s papers and again they are attacking Jack Warner. How could you attack the FIFA, Jack Warner and Blatter in the worse way and then want to cover the sport that these people administer,” Warner said.

Finally, he admits that Lasana is being victimised for doing his job. Notice JW makes no distinction between himself, Blatter and the beautiful game itself, so tuh ass wid a man who want to cover de actual footballers dem because he expose yuh slackness. How much more ah dis  :bs: go flow between now an June boy?

Football / Re: Why not Soca-Chutney Warriors?
« on: January 07, 2006, 01:27:06 PM »
Soca chutney warriors...please! Everything that put Trinidad on the world stage has been done by people of Afrikan descent. The origins of carnival is based upon Afrikan struggle for liberation. The steel drum was made by people of Afrikan descent. Alot of people in foreign and in Trinidad feel that all races in Trinidad developed carnival and the steel drum as a collective. But that is not true. Carnival and the steel drum originated because of the oppression experienced by Afrikans in Trinidad.

To call the team soca chutney warriors is a punk off to the Afri-Trinidadian. Soca already emphasizes Trinidad. So soca chutney would only emphasize indo-trinidadians.

Qualification for the world cup is a Trinidad accomplishment , but most of all it is a Afri-Trinidadian or Afri-Caribbean accomplishment ! If anything the Afrikan presence of the team should be emphasized because the whole team is of Afrikan descent (with the exception of one).

I have love for all humans, but to suggest that the team should be called soca chutney warriors is an example of bootlegging. For people who feel that this is racists, this is the truth.  Check your history!
prof, dis post ain't no better dan wha anil write...yuh still tryin tuh hold brief for a particular race, instead ah focusin on nationality. nobody will discount what people of either race have done to contribute to the nation, but that is just not the point!

WHHHHHOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
STOP!
Yuh jus raise mih monkey gland......

Alot of people on this site just like to run they mouth saying players just not good enough i have never read such rubbish in my life these people are just ignorant of the facts .
The fact is if TOBAGO was not a part of TRINIDAD D Yorke would be still in TOBAGO ketching crabs for a living .
Tobago is not part of Trinidad...we are both part of the unitary state that is Trinidad & Tobago. And wha yuh sayin? dat crab catching is what Tobagonians do for a living?
Fact #2 if the strike squad was not a successfull team D Yorke would have been playing in boys and girls high school with the other bunch of drunken pot heads.
I take it you're from an all boys school? Out of sheer respect for mih breddren dem from QRC & Fatima, ah go pass on d first ting dat come to mih mouth to call yuh. For d record, I happen to be one of d odder drunken pot heads, as u call us who played for Bishop's High School against DY and Signal Hill.
Fact #3 D Yorke was lucky enough to be the only player from T&T to get a contract as a 17/18 year old, join a club youth system and given time to learn and play the game properly which is something the rest of players from T&T did not get a chance to do D Yorke was just in the right place at the right time thats all so untill you guys get your facts straight you guys need to stop running your mouths.
Lucky yuh say? an you tink yuh have yuh facts straight? yuh ever hear of a man call Neil Wilson? Does the name Bertille St. Clair mean anything to u?
