'Ultra' football fans protest over shooting

Fans of Spartak Moscow football club have blocked one of the Russian capital's main thoroughfares and chanted nationalist slogans, demanding revenge, after one of the club's fans was killed by a migrant from the country's troubled North Caucasus.

Yegor Sviridov, a 28-year-old Spartak fan believed to be part of an "ultra" group, was with his friend, 25-year-old Dmitry Filatov on Sunday night, when the pair got into a fight with a group of men.

According to police reports, he was shot four times – including once in the head – and died, while Mr Filatov is currently in hospital with stomach injuries.

Yesterday, Aslan Cherkesov, the 26-year-old accused of firing the shots, was taken into custody. He claims that he was acting in self-defence, while Mr Sviridov's friends say that they were minding their own business when Mr Cherkesov and his friends attacked them.

Around 1000 fans of the club gathered outside a local prosecutor's office late on Tuesday evening to demand a probe into the death, fearing that the accused might be able to bribe his way out of a trial.

Things started off peacefully, with fans lighting candles in remembrance, but the meeting soon got out of control. Fans climbed onto cars, lit flares and blocked traffic on Leningradsky Prospekt, one of the capital's busiest roads. They chanted the nationalist slogan "Russia for Russians" before being dispersed by riot police.

Nationalist sentiment and violence among fans will be a concern for the country, which last week won the right to host the 2018 World Cup.

In the run up to the vote, Russian officials were furious that sections of the British media wrote about racism at Russian grounds, claiming that the problem was purely imaginary.

But there is no doubt that the game in Russia is often marred by clashes between fans. Fan groups, many of whom style themselves on the notorious English "firms" of the 1970s and 1980s, have a reputation for nationalist rhetoric.

A reporter visiting a game in Saransk, one of the 2018 host cities, saw a large group of fans give Nazi salutes during the match last month. Inside the stadiums on matchdays in the top division, hundreds of riot police stand guard to prevent any trouble. But outside, things can get nasty. Last month, around 1,000 fans of Zenit St Petersburg went on the rampage after they won the Russian Premier League. The fans clashed with police and vandalised bus stops.

Last month, over 100 Spartak fans were arrested after clashing with police during a Champions League tie with Olympique Marseille. The fiercest violence usually comes between fans of the Moscow club and migrants from the North Caucasus. The rivalry on the pitch is boosted by nationalist elements within the Moscow fanbase who oppose the large-scale migration from the poverty-stricken area to Moscow.

Away trips to football clubs based in the North Caucasus often result in fights. Aiden McGeady, Spartak's Irish international midfielder who signed for the club from Celtic last year, recalled a tough trip to Anzhi Makhachkala, in the restless republic of Dagestan, where an Islamic insurgency is raging. McGeady said it was worse than anything he'd seen during the bitterly contested Old Firm derbies between Rangers and Celtic.

"There was a big riot. I don't think it was the police and the Spartak fans. I don't know what happened," he said.

"Then I saw the Anzhi fans running up to the Spartak fans, tearing out seats and throwing them. It's a different world out there."

After the game, said McGeady, the team bus was pelted with stones by home fans and the Spartak players scrambled to hide on the floor.

Tuesday's demonstration was concluded without any major violence, but police are worried about further protests planned for the weekend.

i'm surprised Warner has come out with this statement that the English media were the reason why England only got one vote

that's tantamount to an admission that Russia didn't win on solely on merit

Beetween Football Supporter and Palos posts I vacillating

They both make very good points...esp. w/ regard to Qatar
although football supporter lorse mih wict dat future king of england ting...WFC bout dem relics

Nevertheless, under table money clearly did pass..so everyones salient points are kinda moot

Its a fair point. Many British people would complain about the Royal Family. However, they immediately rally round when people from other countries disrespect the Royals. Its an antequated system, but royalty is still respected. Lying to the future King is a fantastically huge political mistake. Any human being who is lied to will always remember and bear grudges against the liar and their associates. Diplomacy is fragile, that was my point.
I can see validity in Russia and Qatar from some aspects (although Australia would have been more deserving IMO). This anger is not because England lost. God knows, we're used to losing! The anger is about a system that is blatantly corrupt. Its time these people are exposed and FIFA cleaned up. We know they self regulate to suit themselves. In what other situation could a member of a group blatantly refuse to pay their employees, deny their working rights, lie and slander in public and still be allowed to continue as normal? FIFA should have suspended TTFF immediately the 2006 wc dispute arose. Warner has twice been accused of ticket touting and found guilty once, yet he still has formidable power. FIFA order governments around. This has to change.
I have already predicted that the British media would spend big money to trap or investigate Warner. The British press is in T&T right now, parked outside Jacks house. These guys are professional investigators who will spend months building their story. Remember Sven? Remember Ashley Cole? Remember John Terry/Wayne Bridge? There are many high profile politicians and businessmen who have gone to prison because of the medias investigations. There are many careers in tatters because people have been exposed as gay, falsifying financial records, making fraudulent claims etc. Jack has struggled to appear clean so far, but he has never fallen under the microscope of the British press. Now they're looking to vent their anger and their sights are set on the easiest target...Jack. If they can, they will bring down Blazer too and eventually Blatter. Jennings has been the lone striker for years, now he will be joined by a multitude of expert dirt diggers and financial pros, including ex police fraud detectives. These people will dig through dustbins to get evidence. They will pay unamed sources. A paper like News of the World would easily spend 1 million pounds to snare Warner.
And the mad thing is that for the first time ever, Jack has lost in court and is facing determined scrutiny of his finances through the courts.
Unusually for Jack, his timing is very, very poor. 2011 should be very interesting for Warner watchers!!!

not disagreeing with what you're saying, but do you know for a fact that the British press are camped outside Jack's house

Now that make sense; kudos my brother the best post so far, forget all the rhetoric we know who fifa is and what they stand for. It's not a secret that they're corrupt but they made a decision and we have to live with it unpopular as it may be to some, why not Russia why not Qatar.

here are my predictions for 2018 and 2022 respectively

in 2018 most on here are going to be lambasting FIFA for awarding the competition to one of, if not the most, racist country that competes in top level football. Every time a black player touches the ball we are going to hear booing and monkey chants from the Russian crowd. To give you an example of how bad it is over there, one of the Russian clubs (I think it's Zenit St Petersburg) were forbidden by their fans to sign black players

in 2022 most on here are going to be lambasting FIFA for awarding the competition to Qatar because of the lack of atmosphere due to half-empty grounds. There are also going to be many cultural issues. For example the authorities are not going to take too kindly to scores of scantily-clad Brazilian female fans (as well as Trinis assuming we make it) parading themselves in public. The same goes for drinking rum and the like. Alcohol consumption is allowed in Qatar but you have to consume it discreetly (indoors). I don't think many fans are going to adhere to those customs (especially the European hooligan element) and we may witness some ugly street battles between fans and riot police (although that will probably happen with the English fans regardless of any alcohol restriction) The other issue with Qatar is going to be the temperature. They claim they can develop these stadia that will have an air conditioned 'bubble' that will protect the players from the soaring heat. In spite of that, it still wouldn't surprise me if we see players dropping like flies and consequently the standard of football is the worst ever in the history of the competition.

what an absolute shambles

this saga resembles the Gerrard saga when he was considering signing for Chelsea

fans of the player react with shock and anger

fans make death threats to the player

player has a change of heart and signs a new contract

the following season all is forgotten and the fans continue to worship the player for being a 'true red to the day he dies'

odds on the betting exchanges are as follows...

8/11 Jamaica £65,281

11/4 Draw  £1,990

5/1 T&T £1,996

betting turnover is quite low on this match, so far only £70k has been traded on this match and as you can see £65k of that amount has been on Jamaica...

Any live feed for this game?

Kingman

www.betfair.com will be showing a high-quality feed of the game, but you have to open an account and deposit some funds to view it. You don't have to place a bet, but you must have funds in your account to gain access to the "live video" section of the site. There may also be some viewing restrictions depending on what country you're accessing it from.

I watched the game and I was laughing at just how bad a co-commentator he was. I don't think he's going to become a regular for Sky

he couldn't remember some of the players' names, kept calling Albrighton "Albright"

kept losing his, err, err, train of, err, thought

overuse of the words "Fantastic" and "bitterly disappointed"

my two favourite Yorkeisms from the game were:

"Great ball from Elkington. That will give the world confidence" followed by "I can't see Stoke scoring" (30 seconds later Kenwyne does the business  ;D)

it was the worst 90 minutes co-commentating I've ever heard on any channel ever

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2010/09/04/wayne-rooney-cheats-on-pregnant-wife-coleen-with-1k-a-night-prostitute-115875-22537906/

Wayne Rooney paid for secret hotel sex sessions with a £1,000-a-night prostitute while his wife Coleen was pregnant with their son,
the Sunday Mirror can sensationally reveal.
The £100,000-a-week Manchester United and England icon slept with brunette Jennifer Thompson, 21, seven times over four months.
And, astonishingly, he even flaunted her on a string of dates to VIP haunts in Manchester, including bars, clubs and the city’s 235 Casino.
Last night a humiliated Rooney was confessing his disgrace to childhood sweetheart Coleen, who took him back in 2004 after the Sunday Mirror twice exposed him for cheating on her with prostitutes.
Rooney now expects betrayed Coleen to throw him out of their £5million mansion in Cheshire and begin moves for an explosive divorce. He told a pal yesterday: “My life is in ruins…I’ve been so stupid. Coleen won’t forgive me this time. She will leave me.”

As with the downfall of philandering golf legend Tiger Woods, Rooney fully anticipates losing sponsorship deals worth £6million a year which depend on him maintaining his family man reputation.
Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, escort girl Jennifer said of multi-millionaire Rooney: “He sent me SIM cards full of text messages and spoke to me on Skype using a false name. Whenever we met for sex, it was always in the same hotel.”
It is understood that Rooney, 24, booked Jennifer from an online agency in Manchester which promises its clients “ultimate discretion” after she was recommended to him by a pal.
Their first meeting was in July last year at the £300-a-night Lowry Hotel in Salford when devoted Coleen was five months pregnant with their son Kai.

Well-spoken Jennifer – whose middle-class parents live in a £300,000 detached home in a leafy suburb of Bolton – provided Rooney with “anything goes” sex.
After two two-hour romps with him at the Lowry a week apart from each other, she was dropped by her agency when she took bookings from him direct in order for her to avoid paying commission. The sex sessions then developed into longer, more intimate “dates”, often lasting five or six hours during which time he would arrange for room service to deliver dinner and champagne at the five-star Lowry.
On each occasion, he paid her £1,000 in cash for her company.
A friend of Jennifer’s said last night: “She couldn’t believe it the first time he booked her. He used a different name so she didn’t know who he really was until she knocked on the hotel room door and he opened it.
“She wasn’t star-struck. She considers what she does to be a profession and she always strives to be very good at it.
“But she got into trouble with her agency when they found out she was by-passing them and taking bookings from him direct on her own mobile phone and over the internet using Skype.
“After he’d had sex with her the first few times, he changed his attitude towards her. He said it was no longer just about an hour or two of sex but that he’d grown genuinely fond of her. But he carried on paying her whenever they met. It went on for four months.”

Their last meeting was in October. On November 2, Coleen gave birth to Kai. The source said: “He suddenly stopped calling Jennifer in October, although she has seen him out in bars and clubs in Manchester since. When that happens, she makes sure she stays well away from him to avoid any awkwardness.”
The source went on: “She’s a well-to-do young woman and has had a good education. You’ve only got to look at her to see why Wayne liked her so much.
“She loves the high-life and leads a hectic life of parties, holidays and nights out. She works hard for six months, earns lots of money and then goes to Spain for a few months to party with friends she has over there.
“When she’s run out of money, she comes home and starts escorting again. She’s young but very confident and sure of herself.
“In the past, she’s told friends that she would love to be a real WAG. She knows that it all coming out will devastate Wayne. She says she feels sorry for Coleen but that at the same time, Wayne must have known the risks of one day being found out. On a few of their dates, he actually took her out on his arm to bars and a casino.
“He must have been on some kind of self-destruct trip. It must have been obvious to him that people would spot him and see that she wasn’t Coleen but he didn’t seem to care.”
Rooney and Coleen, 24, met while they were at secondary school in Liverpool.
In July 2004 the Sunday Mirror revealed how he had paid £140 to romp with prostitute Charlotte Glover, then 21, before leaving her with a signed autograph as a souvenir.
Then, a month later, the Sunday Mirror revealed how he had sex with prostitute Gina McCarrick, 37 at a £45-a-time brothel in Liverpool, which he visited 10 times and where he was caught on CCTV. He also had sex there with a 48-year-old grandmother known as “Auld Slapper”, who wore a rubber catsuit.
A humbled Rooney later issued a grovelling apology, saying: “Foolish as it now seems I did on occasions visit massage parlours and prostitutes. I now regret it deeply and hope people may understand that it was the sort of mistake you make when you are young and stupid. It was at a time when I was very young and immature.”
In her autobiography, Coleen later revealed that she forgave Rooney because when he had sex with the three prostitutes – in 2002 – she and he had not yet slept together or formally settled down together. She wrote: “The truth is, and I’ve never said this before, at that time in our relationship I’d never even slept with Wayne. “I was only 16 and we weren’t having that kind of relationship at that stage. We used to meet at the chippy or the cinema.”
After his double vice disgrace, Rooney gradually rebuilt his reputation, allowing him to garner massively lucrative sponsorships.
And he slowly re-established trust with Coleen. Rooney and Coleen married in June 2008 in a lavish ceremony in a converted monastery near Genoa on the Italian Riviera.
A beaming Coleen wore a £200,000 white Marchesa wedding gown and pearls while Rooney sported an open-necked shirt for the ceremony at the abbey of La Cervara.
In May this year, just before England’s World Cup disaster, he insisted being a father had changed his life. “Becoming a dad means you have to be a role model for your son and be someone he can look up to,” he said.
“Now I have someone to look after and I just want to be with Kai and Coleen as much as possible. I don’t go clubbing very much any more, maybe only a couple of times a year. I’m now in bed by 10.30pm.”
And he publicly acknowledged the onus on him to behave responsibly, saying: “The lifestyle I lead as a footballer means I am always in the spotlight.”
Rooney, who played for England on Friday night in the 4-0 victory over Bulgaria, was due to travel to Switzerland tomorrow for England’s next European Championship qualifier in Basel on Tuesday.
But it was unclear last night whether he would remain with the squad amid the crisis now erupting in his marriage.

Is the game likely to sell-out? is it possible to just turn up and pay cash at the gate? or is it mandatory to have to book and collect from Marvin Lee?

Jay I think that should be possible and you can also go to venue to pay for and collect your tickets up until 1pm today at the HCS. I remember that info being posted by someone on this forum yesterday but can't remember in which thread!

Btw Jay are you in T&T and if so have you now moved back to T&T or are you simply there on holiday?
Please PM me with an update, long time no speak!

hi Socapro, you're right, long time no speak

my garage business went tits-up when the recession hit. I was lucky to get out owing only a few thou. Plenty people I know lost everything. Business, house, cars, you name it. Now I work for a company called Clear Channel and I'm responsible for ensuring all their motorised ad panels in the London area are going up and down

I'm here on holiday for the next three weeks. I flew down on Sunday, same flight as the players, but they were up front in business and I was in the rear with the cattle so I didn't really get a chance to speak to any them

I read the ad about collecting tickets from HC/ML before 1pm but I'm still organising friends and family. Some of them are going to have to try and get an hour or two off work, so the upshot is I don't know exactly how many tickets I'm going to need until maybe 5.00 pm, so that's why I'm hoping we can just turn up and pay cash at the gate

good to hear from you again  :beermug:
