I cannot help but find the whole episode ironic: although they won the Cup, the achievement became incidental to the chest-butting incident and now to top it off, they are unravelling from within.    Sad, sad state of affairs.

The players they need are in the USA already, but unless Fox News talking about it, nobody notices the millions of immigrants who love the game and posess the elusive element needed to make the difference. Instead of scouting the colleges, who produce the same level of kick-and-run crap. Too much rigid football, too much structure. They need to start looking at the hispanic leagues, and the african leagues, and the west indian leagues. We'll all bitch and moan about how they are pulling in non-american players, but they'll get what they are looking for.

All jokes aside, I have to wonder which crab suite some of these people live in.   Have they not seen T&T represented at the Miss Universe Pagean for decades?   Lovely, well educated ladies that do their islands proud?   Sure, they got to compete by living in the bush and swinging from vines, right.    Idiotic.

At least the British make it a right of passage for their young to hitch-hike through the UK and even Europe, therefore picking up some culture and travel savvy along the way; the average american is content to say he has travelled cross country.   It's like (and if an american reads this, please don't take insult because none's intended) the US saying that they are world champions in american football.   I mean, exactly which other countries have they ever had to beat to become World Champions?

Geography is not a strong suit for many people, regardless of their job.   I once spoke with a high-ranking banking officer in Wall Street, New York who, when I said I was calling from the Cayman Islands, got all enthusiastic and asked me how was the weather in South America.   Helloo???

Personally, I was rooting for them to be kicked in the butt from the group stages.   They are overrated and some fans cannot accept that they are men, not gods.   If they are men, they have a weakness; if they have a weakness, it can be found and utilized against them.

And that goes for every team and every individual.

"It cost the Football Association about 27 million pounds, or 100,000 a week, in wages for Eriksson and his principal assistant, Tord Grip, to reach a couple of World Cup quarterfinals."

Rooney needs to be reigned in, the sooner the better.   If his unsporting behaviour is allowed to continue uncheched and unsanctioned, he will cost England many more matches.   The boy is a menace!

I assume that you have lots of talent just waiting to be given a chance.

Having said that, whomever they turn out to be, I think they would benefit from being taught techniques to play against taller players than the average latin american 6", as Europeans tend to be more in the 6'2" to 6'4 range.  This places your players at a disadvantage which, however small, can make or break a game.

In a dream world, it would also help if defenders were encouraged to develop their forward abilities - the element of surprise can work wonders.   I look forward to the friendlies and 2008 qualifiers.   :beermug:

Nice.  Leh Aragones and all dem racist Spaniards go home.  It ain't have no place in the World Cup for dem losers.  Yuh could tell that men hadn't forget bout Aragones.  I see Viera was telling him to hush he mouth on de sideline; then, the referee make him sit down on de bench.

Easy, there.   I am latin american and have only shown support for your team and respect for the forum members.   I am not denying that some people do not know how to handle diversity because they have not been exposed to it, but it is is not right to generalize, either.  Peace.

Football / Re: PICK THE NEXT COACH !!
« on: June 26, 2006, 11:51:53 AM »
No local player or coach is good enough to be TT national coach.

There I said it.

The Soca Warriors are a big team now.

We are a World Cup side and only the best must coach us....no guessing ting.

You have to be able to conduct interviews, talk in different languages, do proper PR, not give away any secrets, not bow to public pressure scruitiny etc.
You must not be a puppet to jack, the local coaches and you must not have any friend in local footballing circles.

You must know how to prepare teams, scout, have different playing styles, know how to set up camps, training methods, injuries and psychology and

last but not least.

Command the respect of your charges and have the experience or resume to back up your actions.

It is not a white people better, it is not a colonial mentality. It is just the locals are not adequate and I think our national team is too important to be tinkered with by an amature.

We must simply get the best man for the job.

If you pay peanuts you will attract monkeys.

We need to fork out the dollars and hire a big coach. There is no getting around that.

Bring Back Beenhakker

Totally true.    You guys are no longer in the small leagues so if you want to win, you have to pick a winner.    And living in an even smaller island, I can attest to the damage of being friends with this one and ther other one.   After a while, the agendas get too mixed up to benefit anyone.

T&T needs a south american coach not another euorpean coach.

If the game plan is to go back to the WC, then I would think you all need European coaches.   After all,  T&T would be facing European teams.

No more funds for Soca Warriors

FIFA vice president Jack Warner says he will no longer be financially supporting the Soca Warriors.

In a telephone interview with the Daily Express yesterday, Warner, who is still in Germany, said for the past two years, he had been shelling out the money to the team so skipper Dwight Yorke's men could achieve their goal of reaching the 2006 World Cup.

However, he says he is no longer willing to shoulder that burden.

"I am no longer prepared to foot the bill as before,'' Warner said as he explained that he would no longer be paying Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker's salary, living and travelling expenses.

Ironically, at the time of the interview, Warner said he had spoken to Beenhakker yesterday morning and they had agreed to hold further discussions in person later on in the day when the Soca Warriors camp was closed.

Warner said Beenhakker had expressed a desire to stay on and coach the team. Warner said, however, that he intended to make it clear to Beenhakker that he would not be forking out any money for the team in the future.

"It is the end of the line... I have funded the team for the past two years. I have many things to be thankful for, I have no regrets," Warner said.

He said he had had faith in the team and took them as far as the World Cup in Germany. He admitted, though, that he had no aspirations the team would go beyond the preliminary stages of the prestigious tournament.

Warner did not disclose how much money he had spent over the past two years, but last year he had said the team would need some $79 million to take them through to the World Cup.

He said he would be "vulnerable" to the society if he disclosed the amount he spent on the Soca Warriors.

When asked whether he was in debt, Warner immediately said no and noted he did not regret spending any money on the team. He reiterated, though, that he is no longer prepared to continue doing so.

Asked if he thought the Soca Warriors would have had a better chance in Tuesday's crucial match against against Paraguay, had Russell Latapy been brought in earlier, Warner said he never discussed the team's technical plays with Beenhakker. He did admit that it may have been an error on his (Beenhakker) part to send Latapy in as late as he did.

As for what he thinks is a deserving reward for the team, Warner said he preferred to remain mum on this.

Government, he said, had made promises to athletes in the past and never fulfilled them.

On Tuesday following the game, Prime Minister Patrick Manning, at a news conference at Whitehall, Port-of-Spain, had said that the Cabinet would discuss the country's sporting policy and ensure that various areas in sports, such as football, cycling, cricket and athletics, are funded,

Noting that the Government had had many policies before, Warner said if the Government wishes to fund the Soca Warriors and ensure they make it to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, they would have to put a proposal to the Football Federation.

Warner said he would be returning home on Monday for a three-day stay, after which he would return to Germany for the rest of the World Cup.

T&T: Gone but not forgotten
22 June 2006
by FIFAworldcup.com

In a tournament that opened up with very few surprise results, the achievement of Trinidad and Tobago in holding Sweden to a goalless draw stood out.
Their first-ever appearance at a FIFA World Cup™ set a standard that the Caribbean islanders were just seven minutes from replicating – even surpassing – against England as they established a blanket of red shirts in front of goalkeeper Shaka Hislop and almost suffocated the ambition and hope out of England.

Two late goals crushed them on that occasion and the Soca Warriors' hopes of scoring a first FIFA World Cup goal, and securing a first FIFA World Cup point or more, were then thwarted as Paraguay left them nailed to the foot of Group B with a 2-0 defeat in the last group fixture.

Go to the Trinidad and Tobago team page

Showing great determination and resolve to make up for their inexperience and lack and resources, T&T will still look back on these two weeks in Germany as a success and a tiny nation can take enormous pride in their achievements. Just to be part of football's quadrennial football showpiece was a triumph in itself for a team representing just 1.1 million souls and nobody should feel ashamed at their results.

It is worth stating as well that they performed more impressively than other teams with stronger credentials. And to survive all but ten of the 180 minutes combined against Sweden and England was no mean feat considering the generosity they had offered opponents in their warm-up matches which had many people fearing they could be embarrassed in the competition itself.

Added to that was an injury in the warm-up before the Sweden game which ruled out goalkeeper Kelvin Jack from their FIFA World Cup debut. It could have been a heavy blow but Leo Beenhakker’s squad is blessed in having two fine keepers and Shaka Hislop performed to the level that supporters of his many clubs in England have come to expect. To make life more difficult in that opener, a red card shown to Avery John right at the start of the second half left them to hold out for 44 minutes with ten men.

The lack of a single goal in the three games was a disappointment but this was a tough group and the positives (ie, the defensive performances) far outweigh the lack of potency shown in front of goal.

Dennis Lawrence and Carlos Edwards did some sterling work at the back while in the centre of the pitch Dwight Yorke, in what seems likely to have been his farewell to the national team, acquitted himself with great discipline in an unaccustomed defensive midfield role. Fellow midfielder Chris Birchall was another who took the huge step up from the English lower leagues in his stride.
Yorke said after the final fixture: "I have played football for over 20 years as a professional and these have been the best times of my life."
Read our exclusive interview with Dwight Yorke

Reasons for optimism
The experience of the past two weeks can only work to T&T's footballing benefit, hopefully for years to come. The team will break up and apart from the probable departure of Yorke, another of their legendary stars, Russell Latapy, is unlikely to form part of future plans at the age of 37.

But youngsters will be inspired by the achievements of Beenhakker’s team and the focus that has followed them on their journeys around Germany. Expect emerging young players like Southampton’s Kenwyne Jones to really come to the fore for his country over the next two seasons.

Beenhakker said: “The players have shown they can play at this level. But the experience they have had in this competition can only help development even more and hopefully that will be seen in the results they get."

Football / Warrios Don't Cry!!

Well done my Soca Warriors you did us proud!!

You may have fallen on the field of battle but you performed honourably!!!

You guys played your hearts out .....but it was not meant to be

'Latas' got to fulfill his dream of playing in the WC...

'Yorkie' finish his career going down with the ship ...a true captain...

Hold your heads high because you gave all three teams in the group a run for their money....

I am so proud of your achievements....look out 4 T&T in 2010!!!

And remember WARRIORS DON'T CRY!!
Couldnt have put it better myself.
They've done thier country proud.

I posted it yesterday, and I say it again today:  It was not about the scoring, but about making a statement and boy... did T&T ever make a statement.   A wealth of good is coming your way for the sport and for the nation.   The bashers and haters can only look at the bad but we, the supporters, look at the good, the solid, the promising, the POSITIVE.

You imagine how many school children are now encouraged - no! fired-up - to take up the game or work harder at it?    They now have many role models to look up to.   It is no longer a distant dream to go to the WC and make the country proud.    It is a reality.   Something no longer to dream about but pursue in earnest.

Ignore the ones that do not believe and cherish the ones that share the passion.

Here in Cayman, I watched the games with co-workers from several of the nations that are participating - Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, England, Holland and Mexico.   And you know what they all said??   That T&T played with their heart.   And I've heard that from many people here.   It is not always about scoring.   It is about making your mark, showing your skill and demonstrating that you have a right to be on the porch with the big dogs.  And your team did it.   Your team did you proud.

So, thank you.   I willl check in here regularly to keep track of the matches leading up to 2010, so.... keep me posted, please!

Alyuhy, I'm new....Am I welcomed tuh stay ???

Makes two of us, new 'uns.    But I am all positive vibes, guys!!  :o)   Just read this on WC site:   "Trinidad and Tobago can also be satisfied with their performance at their first ever FIFA World Cup™. They gave an excellent account of themselves, and both the players and the fans can feel justly proud of their team, which showed that they were capable of holding their own with the big guns. Indeed, with a bit more luck throughout the tournament, who knows how far they could have gone?"    Hey, we didn't win, but we made a mark and that is good.

I felt it too.   Hope he gets better soon.   Here's a quote from the FIFA website that should cheer him up:

Listen!! Bennie helped us qualify for our first World Cup...everyone was happy. Now we lost to a veteran Paraguay team (a team that have made it to the world cup 7 times; making it to the second round in 1998 and 2002; carrying players such as Roque Santa Cruz, Julio Dos Santos, Roberto Miguel Acuña and skipper Carlos Gamarra). We have nothing to be ashamed off. Lift your heads and let’s look towards the future.

Listen, it was not meant to be. We played well and have to be proud. We will move on and learn from our mistakes. Many coaches, players, managers make mistakes. It was a tactical move to bring on Latas and it did not work (in the sense that we did not score, but he did change the game). So what? Jump off a cliff? It's ok. I think the lads did a great job in Germany as well as the coaching staff.

On a different note, why all the obscene language and things of that nature? Not called for gentlemen. Let's keep it clean. State your view (no problem) but no need to use obscene language. Come on now!
