Let's say for argument's sake, this unification could work...what flag will be flown, raised, waived during sporting events.

Emotionally, it has a nice harmonious ring to it.  Realistically, I can't see it happening.

Someone else said, they like seing the RED, WHITE & BLACK flying.  I have to agree.  While I am happy for the Jamaican's success in this Olympics, I felt so personal pride with ther achievement.  No raised pores when I saw their flag.

Just seeing the runners on the track with Trinidad & Tobago across their chests brings the greatest smile to my face.  Never mind what they place, the fact that they are there and working hard to maintain their place is a big achievement in my books.

GO TRINIDAD & TOBAGO!!

Real good Olympics for RT and Trinidad by extension. We are a small country with few Olympic medals and every one is precious so much thanks for two silver.

I really look forward to the day (in my lifetime) that we can get a gold and see our flag and hear that anthem during the medal ceremony. It'll be a great day.
RT and others, please continue your good work and lead us to that day

Yuh wassen born yet in 1976? or yuh was too small.
Wassen born yet. But I ent saying when I was born but if you look careful enough you could guess  :)

mmm..ah young ting!!   ;D

How many people know Rodney Wilkes would have gotten the gold until the Egyptian change a lifter while the event was going on which is illegal today and won it.

What does that mean?

:applause:  Congratulations to the Jakans for a race well run.  It would have been hard to beat them on paper and certainly on the track.  Big up to our boys as well, we could have not asked for anything more (except for a cleaner handover on the final leg).  Congrats a great achievement for the Caribbean!   :applause:

  We have to thank the US for dropping de baton as well

We woulda still beat dem!!

GO TEAM T&T!!!!

Congrats to my boys, Team T&T Olympic silver medallists Men's 4x100M. And to our brethren up de chain for an amazing performance and the gold medal and new world record, Team Jamaica. Oh gosh it's so nice to be from the islands!  ;D

Is a pity de girls couldn't medal as well. We have to work on that for next Olympics, for another Caribbean 1-2.

Woulda be sweet eh? Next time, next time.

As I said before, I am so happy that the vast majority of the world doesn't share the same opinion of a small group of sanctimonious fools. Not just that, it is the manner of their criticism. Don't deride a man you know nothing about on primetime. Did anyone speak to Bolt about that before ? Find out his views? You don't do that to a man. I am totally digusted by this whole thing and then man coming saying they have pride at posting article. Wow. My message to Bolt is to continue doing your thing and celebrate EVEN MORE if you get the chance. The world will love you even more for it. Don't worry with the deluded few.

Someone, somewhere posted a video of an interview with him after the race and asked about it.  He made it clear that he didn't come to break a record.  He came to win at the Olympics.  Who vex lorse!!  He was very respectful and pleasant and it is clear that he has no ill-will and ill-intent.

Jealousy and envy does come in many colours, not only green.

16
I'm not conflating the issue - Ato said you could celebrate how much you want before and after the event and not during. His was during the event. Ato didn't talk about degree and all that in his statement on the Bolt issue.

Anyways I care not enough about this issue to fight on it.

On a funny note, here's Scott Van Pelt (from ESPN sportscenter) on his podcast talking about the issue and trying to do a Jamaican accent! Hilarious.

(It's at the beginning of the podcast)

That really was hilarious!!  but he made is point!!

Joke is joke  but after reading  some of the commentaries and the inquiries about Bolt's accomplishments, it seems that there is  a bias tendency by some to:

A. question the legitimacy of his accomplishments. To this date, I have not seen the press nor read of similar type questioning about Phelps accomplishments. In contrast  he is already  receiving endorsements and  I saw an image of him on a cereal box!!! Was Mark Spitz another accomplished swimmer from the USA glory days ever held under suspicion for his accomplishments?

When Conte (Balco), throws a statement about alleged 'doping' surrounding Caribbean athletes it serves to minimize our accomplishments and to imply that success in athletics is reserved for certain countries. The Olympics is the venue whereby the venue where by all nations regardless of size, demographics and any other variable could send  athletes to compete whit the hope that glory could be accorded upon them and raise the  profile of  nation.

B. to be critical of his  expressions of victory. His style and decorum may well be  attributed to age as some suggest or it may simply be an expression of personal joy!!!!  I have observed how different athletes have different approaches to how they 'psyche up' for the race and how they approach the start of a race. In the same way the celebrations at the end  could be nothing but a personal  choice.
I eh know  there was a standard protocol for that!!! This week  Bolt and the  the nation of Jamaica should relish in their accomplishments and in aiding to add to the positive perception of the Caribbean region; for a week  the region is not simply about tourism, sun sand, crime , and all the notorious public press which has served to put us in a daunting  light . Today we stand with Jamaica on top of the athletic world and we share in  their accomplishments.

I am reminded of a quotation that  I have often heard from many Jamaicans:

"The heights by great men reached and kept were not obtained by sudden flight,But they, while their companions slept were toiling upward in the night." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Just maybe the people toiling awayy for years while others sit back and continue to relish in their pride.

Damn straight.  Even today's paper (Toronto Star, see below)  have ah article dat all but start out by questionin whether he doped or not!! STEUPS!!

« on: August 21, 2008, 09:03:50 AM »
I can't believe it have people who would belittle the fantastic acheivements of Phelps by putting it down to "new technology" and the variety of swimming events available to compete in.  Allyuh will do well to remember that he take 6 golds and 2 bronze in Athens 2004.  On top of which, look at the number of events he compete in over a relatively short space of time - you really feel any ordinary athlete coulda recover so well from one event to the other and come out with 8 golds??

Respect to Bolt - his acheivements are monumental.  But "already decided"???  Steupppsssss..........

I don't see it as belittleing.  Somebody ask a question and gave two answers from which to chose.  You choose one, while others picked the other.  What rong wid dat!!   ???

Choosing an answer is fine.  Justifying it logically is fine.  But to imply that Phelps' acheivements are any less commendable because of "new technology" is, in my view, belittling those acheivements.  And by the way, I didn't choose an answer.  I find it hard to choose between them.  Both fantastic athletes.

My bad

I still don't see anyone implying by their response that MP is any less commendable than UB.  People are simply expressing how they came by their decision one of criteria being new technology.

Would it have been more satisfactory to simply state a name in response to the question and move on?

I tried to stay away from the controversy but this is riduculous now....I think the IOC went way out to discredit Bolt on his record runs...I saw nothing wrong with what he did...I also saw nothing wrong with Ato opinion on how Bolt celebrated, i understood where he was coming from as an ambassodor to the sport....but Bolt is entitled to express himself on winning the most prestigious race in the Olympics..and breaking the record to boot.

I am standing with Bolt on this one and I think this IOC report is gonna do a lot more damage than Ato's statement.....I sense something a lot more here...yeah I am going to say it....is because he from a small island  ??? Seriously why this is such a big deal....he ran 9.69....and is being ridiculed and slamed for something he did spontaneously in the last .69 sec of the race....now they taking it further say he should not celebrate even after winning, but go and hug up ppl he come after him? this is no charity race...I always thought you had to congratulate the champion not the other way round...this is not the special olympics  >:(
Big Up!

Thank you.  Well said.

22
Bullshit and more bullshit. Don't no Olympic champion pat nobody on dey damn shoulder after they win. They looking for flag. They looking for family. They caught up in the moment. Other competitors come up to them to congratulate. As has happened with Bolt. How many people Michael Phelps was patting on the shoulder while he bawling like a madman around de pool? Where the IOC commentary on that?

Exactly!!!

« on: August 21, 2008, 06:58:38 AM »
Spain’s monarchs King Juan Carlos and his wife Queen Sofia are expected to visit T&T by the end of the year, a television news report said last evening.
An official from the Spanish Embassy reportedly confirmed yesterday that preparations were already underway for the high-profile visit.
The monarchs, who are expected to be accompanied by a large entourage, were said to have been personally invited to this country for a state visit by Prime Minister Patrick Manning.
The PM reportedly met King Juan Carlos when he visited London and Spain in December 2003 at the invitation of Spanish energy producers Repsol.
The week-long historic visit is expected to cement trade links between T&T and Spain.

I will say Bolt.  The Caribbean connection aside, he does not have as long a history in his sport as Phelps.  Certainly not in the 100.

Secondly, Bolt did not have the elite facilities to train as Phelps.

Thirdly, (and i"m not sure about this), there were more categories in swimming than in T&F which by that alone gave MF a lead.  Bolt could probably have collected more medals (Gold) if there were.

So given his achievements under all those circumstances, my vote is Bolt.

I'm sure Bakes will correct me if I'm incorrect any of the above.

doh 4get bahamas who  I find use to real rip up d place.

i really believe we still look at sports as a pastime. i tired see athletes (male and female), who were great at school ,not pursue a career  in that fieldl choosing  to focus  on their  books as top priority

I agree.  I think the focus in schools in Trinidad is purely academics and everything else is an aside.  Whether is sports or anything else.  Unless yuh eh get 5 o'levels etc., you are not considered to have been successful and so anything that could possibly distract from that is not encouraged.  It is really the opposite as we see with many successful athletes.

Until children who are gifted (and there are many like that) in which ever particular sport are encouraged and nutured it will remain so.  It requires a triangle of home, school and government participation.

Like China
