Fletcher graduates from Gateshead to Grenada
By John Culley (The Independent)

February 28, 2000

THE QUEST by Caribbean teams for World Cup glory continues apace and apparently no footballing backwaters have been left unexplored in the search for qualified and willing players. The latest known targets include Aston Villa's Julian Joachim (St Vincent), Watford's Des Lyttle (Cayman Islands)... and Keith Fletcher, of UniBond League side Gateshead.

The 29-year-old striker, whose Tyneside club lie third in the UniBond Premier after Saturday's 2-0 defeat of Stalybridge Celtic, has been picked to represent Grenada against Barbados next month.

Fletcher, who numbers Manchester United's Trinidad and Tobago international Dwight Yorke among his friends, will play alongside Jason Roberts of Bristol Rovers in two World Cup qualifying ties against Barbados, away on 5 March and at home 13 days later.

"We received a fax from the Grenada FA out of the blue requesting Keith's release," the Gateshead chairman, John Gibson, said. "It is a great honour for him and the club. Gateshead has never had a player called up for World Cup duty."

With 13 goals this season, Fletcher is recognised as a talented forward and first played for Grenada as a 15-year-old. But he has played full time and now combines playing with a career in banking.

"Keith is a terrific finisher," Gibson added. "He could have played in the League if his dedication at an earlier age had been greater but he's just happy to play the game."

Fletcher described his own reaction as "shocked but delighted - I thought my international days were over."

i forgot all about that article, well done for digging it out :) just show why he's a legend at Gateshead, not many if any players from non-league play for their country!!!

honestly Kieth is a Gateshead legend to the Fans who seen him play.

My name is David, you can ask fletch if his mother still has the photo she took of him and two fans with that shirt, at his last ever game for gateshead!

Hello to everyone,

I am a Gateshead Fc Fan (a northen England semi pro team), and i was wondering if anybody could help me find a Former Player.

Gateshead had a player called Kieth Fletcher he played for Gateshead for a couple of season, he was a scoring machine, he's still a Legend to this day. He played for Gateshead from 98 to 2000.

we have a Website which we are trying to get messages on from our hero's, and Kieth Fletcher is a big one.

I have heard that Fletcher is Shakka Hislop's cousin, but i don't know how true this is.

Kieth also played for Grenada in the world cup qualifiers in 99.

If anybody could help me, please reply.

HEED ARMY TO ALL!!!!!
