Football / "Small Goal" for Kenwyne Jones.....
« on: January 25, 2010, 01:04:43 PM »
As a big fan of Kenwyne Jones, it is my humble opinion that he should focus on some "smal goal" football to develop his control and touch.

The same "smal goal" that most T&T ballers from the nineties and eighties used to over-do and so became generally better on the ball but at the same time weaker finishers; the opposite seems true for KJ today.

some may argue that he is being paid to score goals and that is what he does but even with all the physical attention that he gets in the games he would be at least three or four more goals to his credit if he developed a faster turn, tighter control in close quarters, etc.

Just a thought.....

Football / Time for macajuel to bite like mapepire.......
« on: August 31, 2009, 06:36:06 AM »
A lot has been said of the selections made on this current WC campaign and from Maturana, Corneal, and now to Latapy have not been speared the wrath of this forum and justifiably so in most instances. However, there have been many new faces revealed on the national scene justifiable or not. The thing is when we have players getting opportunities they must dig deep to produce something special for the Red, White, and Black.

Far too often the men who make the national set up seem to be unprepared for this level with just a few exceptions. When you are selected for national service you need to bring your "A-game", it is not the time to clam-up and just accept your national selection as the pinnacle of your career, these players now need to prove themselves worthy of selection, after all it should be an honor to represent your mother, father, wife, children, Steelband, Tassa, and Kaiso, not to mention all of T&T.

There have been complaints about too many laborers and not enough magicians but it seems world football has been heading that way for some time. The ideal would be magicians who are also laborers a little Makalele would go a long way for the present Soca Warriors. The thing is, we need some more men to stand up and be counted when it matters. We seem to have many big name players but not many big game players but the time has come for our big Macajuels to stop hugging-up and squeezing everbody in CONCACAF and start biting them like Mapepire .

Football / A few mountains have to be climbed .....
« on: June 10, 2009, 06:40:17 AM »
Any journey as we all know, must have its ups and downs and the same goes for qualifying for a FIFA World Cup.  It must be noted that few teams have smooth sailing all the way and those that appear to have, actually put in a lot of work and have done a few special things along the road.

Even Argentina and Brazil struggled in early qualifying this time around. Yet we must consider the fact that players on all the teams that eventually make it to the Finals had to pull off some big performances at times when all the odds seem to be against them.....THEY ALL HAD A FEW MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB...

Last time around the Soca Warriors had to beat a Quatemala team that had already hit them 5, and had to come from behind to win, they also had to beat Mexico, not to mention travel to Bahrain and win there. However, on all those occasions summounting the mountain that was before them required a little extra from the players, they had to dig deep for something special.....

This campaign is no different, the players will have to start producing "special performances" if we are to climb the mountains before us. The FIFA World Cup requires herculean efforts especially from teams that lack deep player pools such as T&T. It boils down to eleven against eleven, and each player must remember that putting on the Red, White, and Black is an honor that they must defend with everything they got. We must truly be WARRIORS and that is giving it everything then a little more. When you play for your country you are representing everything sacred about your birth place, Steelpan, calypso, tassa, Maracas Bay, Corn soup, doubles, the honor of yuh mudda and yuh fadda, and all yuh best childhood friends yuh grow up wid.

We were able to make it to Germany, proving that impossible was nothing! So yet again we have an opportunity to shock the world. Our players need to look at the mountains before us as opportunities for David to slay Goliath, as the underdog you have little pressure on you which can work in your favor.

So this post is meant to encourage our players to dig deep and find that special performance, to dig deep and climb that mountain that they face.

Doi! Doi! Doi! Latapy in ah d area...so vibes it up!

Football / The "Corbeaux" brand.....
« on: September 26, 2008, 01:41:47 PM »

As you all know every country on earth has its on style of play and it is usually heavily influenced by the culture of the country. Brazil has samba and thus their beautiful game, England has their "Bulldog" longball-physical style, France has its flair, and Italy has its catanaccio, Germans have their disciplined "stick-to-the-plan" style, even the US has its boring "run, run, run, work, work, work" style or approach.

Well after hearing many posters on the site refer to our local style as the "Corbeaux brand", it made me think. Why should our style not take after our Carnival, Steelband riddym, calypso, chutney, and soca melodies, or even we Tassa percussions? The answer is clear to any true Soca Warrior Supporter because like me, you would have been through all the heart-attacks that our brand sometimes cause. Our "Corbeaux" brand could dismantle the best team in the world on one day and the next day collect 5 in we pweffen from side like Guatemala, such is the pain associated with we "Corbeaux" brand.

And why not, you cannot predict what a real corbeaux will do, a corbeaux will circle whole day high up in the sky looking pretty-too-bad doing all kind ah formation but when they finally come down to earth they is just a scavenger. Yet still if folkore holds true, corbeauxs have sometimes been known to prey on the weak, so if yuh let down your guard wid ah hungry corbeau....."crappeaux smoke yuh pipe".

So this is why we players does confuse many big time managers, they dont look very threatening, in fact they look like they puttng more form over substance but dont be frustrated with the brand because for all the Bermuda, and recent US scavenger-performances dat we show, we can also confuse and frustrate the best, just ask the likes of Argentina, England, Mexico and Sweden.

Football / Ever wonder why they eh have any black or Afro-Argentine ballers?
« on: September 19, 2008, 03:37:17 PM »
IF slaves worked in all these former colonies in South America, then how come you only see Brazil and Peru with players of African ethnicity? What happened to the slaves in Argentina after slavery was abolished?

If Germany and Italy could have black players in clubs and even for their country why have we never even seen a black Argentine playing for a club?

For those who may be interested like I was, this makes for an enlightening read:

Football / Preparing for the Bradley's boys
« on: July 15, 2008, 06:16:01 AM »
I know that we are supposed to be playing El Salvador- who are similar in style to Guatemala and we have played Cuba in the Digicel so our young squad have an idea of what they can expect from Castro's Army, but what about Bradley's boys/Sam's Army?

With all of Lincoln, Alvin, and Anton's US College experience, should they consider inviting one of the top US college teams (one with a similar US-coached style of play) for a couple friendlies?

Maybe even an A-league team...(I am aware that they are in the midst of their season?)

This might be a stretch but the US Men's Olympic team is in it's final stages of preparatin for Beijing - they might be looking for a game, Lincoln was an ODP coach in the US, he might have a few strings he could pull?

Would this be a beneficial option?

Wrexham spurn Sancho after trial.
BBC Sports.
[/size]

Former Gillingham defender Brent Sancho's week-long trial at Wrexham has ended without the club offering the player a contract. The Trinidad international, 31, was released by the Gills last season and spent time on loan at Millwall and Scottish Division Two champions Ross. Sancho was once a target for Swansea City when they were under former manager Kenny Jackett. But the latest interest in him from a Welsh club has ended.

Football / Call him Glenton or Whim,...I say keep him
« on: June 13, 2007, 08:11:58 AM »
People talkin about which players need to move on and which players ned to buss-it, but I want to make a point about Glenton, ah mean Whim, or whatever he name is.

I think this coach should stay on, we should try to keep this 'X-Clockwork Orangeman" around our national set-up for some more time.

As other posters have said, although performing shaky at times, this so-called "B-Team" have actually given credible results as compared to past Soca Warriors Gold-Cup performances (not including that Semis-final finish).

Props must be given to the T&T Pro league for continuing to develop talent (remember we once did not have a proleague), and the present technical staff; yes fitness was lacking and we only salvaged one point from the whole ordeal, but what a tremendous experience for the journeymen, and we surely witnessed some improvments from some players who are now loudly knocking on the door for frequent selection.

In international soccer as we all know a coach must accept credit and blame for the team's selection and performance, and I think Whim and company have did very well considering what hand he was dealth.

Some were expecting total embarassment, (remember Guatemala 5 vs TNT 1), but instead we had glimpses of maturity, and even genius, not to mention guts.

So I say keep Whim, or is it Glenton.......?

We had a youth team that qualified for Portugal (Yorke and co.) -
TTFF never groomed them for the senior team (disbanded...where are the rest of that team today?)

We hosted a world youth Championship.....(TTFF disbanded that team....Where are those players except for Kenwyn Jones, they MIA)

We qualified for a senior World Cup last year.....we have a Dutch coach who working without pay, and still TTFF cannot resolve a minor dispute to allow our top players to represent the red, white, and black......

I understand all over does have player/federation disputes but look how the US resolve theirs before their first WCQ against T&T in 2005.

No wonder T&TFF seems content to remain Bamsee-Smellers.

Is like every step foward TTFF makes, they then take four backward. Take a good look at the level of experience on the US squad and compare it ours......now you tell me if TTFF not content being BAMSEE-SMELLERS!!!

USA Roster For GOLD CUP:

GOALKEEPERS Brad Guzan (Chivas USA), Tim Howard (Everton FC), Kasey Keller (Borussia Moenchengladbach)

Football / Can I have some ICE in meh LIMA juice ?
« on: January 09, 2006, 09:45:42 PM »
First of all, it really amazes me that soo many so called football pundits on this site, who posting hundreds ah post daily, still eh even close to learning about this game. My point is, plenty men still talkin bout the FIFA Ranking as though that is any reliable guide to a team's performance on any given day.

I am speaking about the condemnation of the two opponents announced tonight (Iceland and Peru). Fellow forumites, "explease meh cuse" but as much as we are all happy to qualify and dislike all the cheap-shots announcers in England are throwing at us, do not forget our beloved Warriors struggle with Whatever-Lima (a Peru Club side) just the other day, and was sucking salt until Stern finally wake up, and start back bussin the net against Guatemala in the return game of the HEX.

I am as much a "Faithfulista" as any, but let us not get swell-headed and carried away here, the team is still being prepared and (Rome was not built in a day), I am sure these games, although not first choice, can still be very usefull to gain experience, experiment, and test us.

Think about it, Peru is a World Cup veteran, are we? People complaining that Peru is ah inconsistant team, but we Soca Warriors supporters complaining about inconsistancy in other teams?..... HELLO? Then what of Iceland? We will be playing Sweden, Iceland ehnt a bad substitute, look at there qualifying record (dont forget we collect 5, from shitty Guatemala).

No, please understand where I am coming from, I would have loved to play the teams that Beenhakker requested, but we cannot cry over spilt milk. Let us make do with what we get, hey, it coulda be worst, men was talkin bout JA, and Atlanta Silverbacks.......

What is also good, is the possibility of confidence boosting against these teams. Those other teams mentioned by Beeny would have definately stretched us, but could have also dealt us some serious blows to we confidence before the big dance.

Let us remember, when life deals you limes, do not get sour, instead make lime juice.

So I say bring on Peru and Iceland, by the time June, we go be ready for the main course.

Football / Did our feet leave the ground again?
« on: October 17, 2005, 07:28:55 AM »
I think it was Cassey Kassem, the evergreen US top-10 count down DJ who has become most known for saying "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars" but any way, with the scalps of Guatemala, Panama, and now Mexico in we bag and Bahrain's possibly on the horizon, should we be celebrating as yet.

As our own history has shown, T&T is quick to forget many hard lessons thought, where football is concerned two instances come to mind, 1970 wcq in Haiti, and the "shot heard around the world" in 1989 from Mr Paul Caligiary who coincidentally had done the same thing to us in California in a previous campaign - (yet we did not learn.)

Celebrating triumphs are important, yet until the preverbial" fat lady sings" we migth be better off curbing our enthusiasm a bit. All I am saying is we do not have to start gun talk with Bahrain fans etc, we been here before so let them do all the talking - (ah know, coming from me, ah talker, right....)

Fact is, no matter who you are in world football, you are trying to go Germany as bad as we or even more, so we must be confident, but not over-confident to a point of taking our opponents lightly. In fact if you really look at it, Bahrain will be able to arrive in T&T early to prepare for the first leg, whereas both teams will play the second leg after a tiring game, and a loooong flight four days later.
(that is in their favor a little bit- at least they will be home.)

Bahrain's record is not that bad, they eh no Argentina, but are we? They seem to be able to grind out draws and 0:0 stalemates, that could be a problem. I know in my heart that our squad is more than capable, but we were in Haiti, and we were here in 1989, now is time to break the streak. So let us support we Soca Warriors with all our heart and soul, but please let us keep our feet on the ground and avoid being big talking show-offs who end up being unplesasantly surprised (AGAIN).

I hate bringing this up, but I will, for SHOCK-VALUE sake,{ let us not forget our lessons learnt in 1989.}

So fellow forumites, let us keep on supporting wilt all our strength, but let us also give thanks for the blessings thus far, without gloating and getting carried away with beating a down and out Panama.

Wednesday we have an important mission, then we still hopfully have two more steps before we reach the promise land.

FOCUS: A Lilleshall parallel?

In his own unique style, Paul Gardner discusses the pros and cons of the Bradenton Academy.

The USA has had a team in all eleven under-17 world cups so far played, starting in China in 1985 . . . the only country with a 100 per cent qualification record . . . but its playing record is far from 100 per cent successful . . . six times it has been knocked out in the first round . . . three times it has lost at the quarter final stage . . . once, in 1999, it reached the semifinals . . . now make that four quarterfinal losses . . . last week, it was business as usual in the 2005 tournament down in Peru, as the USA lost 0-2 to the Netherlands . . . coach John Hackworth told the press: "We thought we could come here and advance to the finals or at least the semifinals . . . we've trained tremendously hard and put in a lot of work" . . . there's no reason to doubt the hard work and commitment of John and his players . . . the USA never played badly, not one of its players played poorly . . . they undoubtedly did the best they could . . . but it was not good enough . . . time for everyone, but particularly U.S. Soccer, to acknowledge that hard work alone is not enough . . . after all, you can be sure that Holland and Mexico and Brazil etc. all trained hard too . . . time for U.S. Soccer to acknowledge that money is not the answer either . . . meaning that the Federation must take a hard look at the Bradenton set-up . . . a residency program that is costing a lot of money, at least $2 million a year, and not working out . . . I do not mean simply that the USA has yet to win the U-17 world cup . . . that's not really the main point . . . Bradenton is supposed to be a program to develop elite players . . . which can only mean future professionals . . . it has developed Freddy Adu and Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley and Eddie Gaven . . . or has it? . . . those were all exceptional players before they arrived at Bradenton . . . but a look at the 2003 crop shows that of the 20 players only eight (including Adu, Donovan, Gaven and Beasley) are now with pro clubs . . . the other 12 are playing college soccer . . . a farcical situation . . . it is stark crazy to spend millions on elite training for 16-year-olds . . . and then turn them over to the banalities of college soccer, where their development will be impeded . . . one answer would be for U.S. Soccer to initiate a similar elite program for older players . . . but this would cost more millions . . . and likely repeat the shortcomings of Bradenton . . . if pro players are to be developed, the pro clubs will have to be in charge . . . not only at the 18-year-old level and above . . . they must also have a strong say on the selection of the younger players . . . but they will never all agree on choices of course . . . all of that points in one direction . . . MLS clubs must get serious about their own development programs . . . 12 separate and serious pro programs must be better than one basically amateur Bradenton . . . the English bowed to that truth more than a decade ago . . . they shut down Lilleshall, their central school . . . a prototype Bradenton . . . and handed development back to the pro clubs and their academies . . . U.S. Soccer should pay attention to Lilleshall's failure . . . and ask itself hard questions about Bradenton . . . which is absorbing millions producing players for college soccer.

German brothel to open before World Cup

BERLIN (AP) - Organizers of what they claim will be Germany's largest brothel on Thursday unveiled the building, which is set to open in time for the 2006 World Cup soccer tournament.

The Artemis brothel near the Olympic Stadium is a four-story building with a pool, sauna and movie theater will accommodate up to 650 men and 100 women at any one time, said Norman Jacob, the lawyer representing its backers.

Germany legalized prostitution in 2003.

"The cleaner, the more transparent, the better," said Norman Jacob. "I think people will want to come here because it has a very nice atmosphere."

Jacob and investors, who are remaining anonymous, showed onlookers some of the themed rooms, with titles like Toscana and Cleopatra, each decorated and painted to reflect their inspirations.

A circular stairway with bright red carpeting and gold-colored railings that bisects the building will take potential customers from the bottom-floor pool to the bar and then up to the top floor and private rooms.

Jacob denied that the brothel was built to take advantage of the crowds flooding Germany for next year's World Cup, to be held in Germany. He said however that Artemis' location, close to soccer stadiums, would be convenient for potential customers.

"I think football and sex go together," he said, while sitting on a velvet couch among frescoes of reclining Roman, Greek and Persian woman in the building's main bar.

He said the women would pay a one-time €70 (US$85) fee and be allowed to occupy a room for up to three months. During that time, each will be provided with free food and gym access. Customers would pay an entrance fee but would otherwise pay the women directly.

Jacob said the house of prostitution had received its license in court and subsequently worked with the surrounding neighborhood to address its concerns. "We had to do this step by step," he said, adding the establishment will not serve alcohol to customers.

Well if England qualify or not, Rooney go be in Berlin "Bullin".

Mexico
Mexico coach Ricardo Lavolpe has announced that he will call up Guillermo Franco in December.

The Argentinian striker, who plays for Monterrey, holds a Mexican passport and is looking forward to making his mark under Lavolpe.

After waiting for a call from Buenos Aires that has not arrived, Franco is targeting the World Cup finals.

"I am very happy since hearing the news that Lavolpe is thinking of calling me into the Mexican national team," he enthused.

"I have always said it - it's very important to be in the national team but, until I receive official communication about this, I prefer to be calm and keep on working.

"I will be very anxious for that phone call. It doesn't matter if it's now, at once, or in the future.

"I have a big expectation for being called to the national team.

"You always wish for something like this because having the chance to play in the World Cup is something that not many players have. It's a gift from God."

Football / Beenhakker not happy with the artificial surface......
« on: September 07, 2005, 10:23:48 AM »
Uncomfortable Beenhakker with the court
Rodrigo Calvo C. (Costa Rican Daily)

The synthetic court of the stadium Ricardo Saprissa did not please the Dutch trainer of Trinidad and Tobago, Leo Beenhakker, with a view to the today duel against Costa Rica.

" Gentleman, I do not like ", it was the incisive response of the extechnician of Real Madrid and of Ajax de Ámsterdam to the press, on having concluded the morning practice of hour and thirty minutes in the stronghold tibaseño.

" The game is different with this lawn, because the ball runs and bounces more and that affects the dynamics. It is not the sport that is known in natural grass. But I cannot change it. There is no problem, we are going to play this way ", he said with resignation.

Beenhakker gave short declarations, while few players offered interviews and the rest of the cadre refused to speak, as the veteran Russell Latapy, one of his regarding ones, who said that it would do it after the game of this night.

The 63-year-old strategist and the one who also directed Holland (two times) and Saudi Arabia, underlined that there are no secrets for the upturn of his wards, who exhibit any more order, leadership and tactical discipline.
" We have worked loudly to improve, although there is no time since 80 per cent of the team play in Europe. We are well of mulberry tree. We win two times (2-0 to Panama and 3-2 to Guatemala) and, if we can do it, we are going to attack here ".

From Today's Guardian Editorial:
The reality is that T&T has never beaten Costa Rica in Costa Rica, the best performance being in 1985 when the teams battled to a 1-1 draw. In fact, the Warriors have never beaten Costa Rica in a World Cup qualifier, despite meeting 11 times. But the last meeting between the two—in Port-of-Spain on March 30—resulted in a goalless draw.

In the circumstances, if T&T can come away tonight with one point, the team and country should feel a sense of achievement. Victory would be astounding.

Honestly am sure we all want d 3 points from dis game tonight, but in reality it is going to be a gigantic battle, maybe comparable to ah "David and Goliath ting."

Now I have seen, heard, and agree that this Costa Rican side is not comparable to those in the past (USA3 vs 0CRC), but at home, and with their backs against the wall, the Ticos will be very difficult opponents.

Because of our positive result against Guatemala, this game has taken on new dimensions. I have a close Costa Rican friend who coaches football here in Atlanta (Gustavo), and he told me that this Costa Rican side is a bit of a controversial sellection, many new young talented players are not selected.

Regardless, to us CRC is CRC especially in San Jose where we have never won. Interestingly, Gustavo told me that every successful WC campaign needs talent, hard work, some luck and a bit of almost-impossible heroics to see you through.

We have, and continue to put in the hard work, we have old and young talent (is it enough, is yet to be seen) so now, if we are going to be singing "Time fuh Germany", we need some of the other ingredients that coach Gustavo spoke about.

And what better time than tonight, we need some luck, and near-impossible heroics to add to our mix, and the Warriors should be able to create a much needed upset (an upset, another thing dat all successful campaigns must have)

Will the Football gods smile on TnT tonight?........................
