Dann ruled out for six weeks
ESPNsoccernet staff

Blackburn Rovers have suffered another blow with the news that defender Scott Dann has been ruled out of action for six weeks after he ruptured a testicle.

Dann has been a vital part of the Rovers defence with injuries to Chris Samba and Ryan Nelsen in recent weeks. But, despite scoring as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at Ewood Park at the weekend, the former Birmingham centre-back has been forced onto the sidelines until Feburary.

Manager Steve Kean told ESPNsoccernet: "Our physio cannot believe it. He has two players out with problems that he has never come across before in all of his years experience. Scott Dann has come in and played so well to replace Phil Jones, but in our last match he was hurt and it now transpires he will be out for six weeks with a ruptured testicle.

The club also revealed that left-back Gael Givet will be out for a few weeks after suffering palpitations and undergoing minor heart surgery, while Martin Olsson and Michel Salgado are still injured.

"Givet needs heart surgery as he was suffering with 300 beats a minute, and again our physio hadn't come across anything like that," Kean added. "We have had problems all season, notably with our back four and now have a winger Morten Gamst Pedersen playing at left-back."

Meanwhile, captain Samba has attempted to take some of the pressure off beleaguered boss Kean by insisting that the players are to blame for the club's slump.

Blackburn are now four points off safety and Kean has come under fire again with protests against his tenure a regular occurrence. However, Samba says it is not down to the boss.

"We are not here to discuss the manager. He is doing his job and trying to lift us. But the players are responsible - we are on the pitch," he said. "It is our job. It is too easy to blame the manager. We were not good enough. As a team we have not proved we are good enough to stay in the league at the moment.

"We are devastated. We are so low. The mood in the dressing room is down. We have let our fans down a little bit by our performance. We need to give them something to cheer. It was not just the defeat, but it was a bad way to lose."

Game just finished with Chile winning 1 - 0.

Chile dominated in most categories, possession, shots and looked better for most of the game. The highlight was the last 5 minutes. A little chippy play and the Portuguese right back Mano tap up one of the Chileans....automatic red...next ting yuh know, on of the Portuguese players run up to the ref to argue, and snatch the card out of the ref hands!!!
Well bam, one time his arse get sent off...

hear nah, this Guadeloupe team holding their own against Mexico. The are athletic as hell and have some nice touches. The sad thing is that if by chance they were to move an and win the cup, they cannot even represent the region at Confederations cup as their federation is not recognized by FIFA?? At least, that's what the commentator said.
At any rate I eh getting ahead of myself, still plenty football to play, but I like this team man....they have heart.

...sorry, I know we have a big game today, but saw this in the Star today and thought it was some good vibes. They looking to build a new stadium by Downsview park in time for the 2007 youth championship and they talking about an expansion MLS team for Toronto.

$60M soccer stadium set for Toronto
Downsview Park to hold facility for 20,000 fans
Venue would be home to possible pro franchise

JENNIFER QUINN
SPORTS REPORTER

Downsview Park has been chosen as the site for a 20,000-seat soccer stadium, and its main tenants could be Canada's first Major League Soccer franchise.

After months of uncertainty over where the $60 million stadium should be built — and with the 2007 FIFA world youth championships looming — the Canadian Soccer Association has decided to focus its efforts on the site at Keele St. and Sheppard Ave. W.

The pro soccer franchise could become the latest part of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment's expanding empire, though president and CEO Richard Peddie said yesterday nothing has yet been signed.

The soccer association had been looking for a site since previous deals to build at the old site of Varsity Stadium and at York University fell through. The association looked very seriously at Exhibition Place — and had the support of Mayor David Miller and Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone — but instead decided to build the facility in the city's north end.

"We're very happy with the way things have been evolving," Kevan Pipe, the association's chief operating officer, said yesterday. "We are focusing our efforts on Downsview Park for a whole bunch of good reasons."

One of those reasons is location.

"Downsview is in the geographic centre of Toronto," Pipe said. "It is in the city of Toronto. It's in the 416 area code."

And it's on federal land, which has been virtually vacant for years. Pipe said $27 million of federal money would be available to build the new facility, which includes a "winter inflatable bubble" roof so it can be used year-round. The Downsview site also has the support of Vaughan Mayor Michael Di Biase, whose city had been bidding for the stadium.

Another $8 million will come from the province, Pipe said, and there's also significant private investment, though he declined to be specific. Additionally, naming rights to the stadium — which could come from soccer association partner IMG Canada — will be worth an additional $10 million to $15 million.

The goal is to have the shovels in the ground by the new year and have the stadium ready to go for April 2007, Pipe said. That would mesh well with the kickoff of the pro soccer season, and later that year teams competing in the FIFA world youth championships would play their first game in July.

The stadium would also strengthen Canada's bid for the 2011 Women's World Cup, Pipe said. But the anchor tenant of the site would be the city's pro soccer expansion franchise, and a new stadium is an intrinsic part of any deal.

Major League Soccer is looking for two new teams for the 2007 season, and league officials have visited the city and spoken with both the association and Maple Leaf Sports, league spokesman Dan Courtemanche said in an interview from New York.

"Toronto is at the top of our list when it comes to cities or markets we're looking to for 2007," he said. "We think the addition of a Canadian team ... would be a great addition for Canadian soccer and for Major League Soccer."

Peddie said his company, the dominant force in Toronto professional sports, is optimistic about bringing a pro soccer club into the fold.

"We haven't done a deal, but we like what we see," he said. "We like the league. We like the commissioner. And we think it could work here.

"I'm confident we could probably do a deal."

If the deal is completed and an expansion franchise comes to Canada, it will be Major League Soccer's first team outside the United States. The expansion fee is said to be $10 million (U.S.), and it already has franchises in Chicago, Washington and Los Angeles.

And if Maple Leaf Sports does end up with the soccer team, that would make it the owner of four of the city's eight pro or semi-pro teams: the NHL's Maple Leafs, NBA's Raptors, AHL's Marlies and the soccer franchise.

The company would also control three of the four major sporting venues in the city, with only the Rogers Centre out of its grasp.

Stephen Heckbert, a spokesman for Joe Volpe, the federal minister closest to the issue, said yesterday that a number of venues had been considered since the York University deal fell through, including sites in Hamilton, Vaughan, Oakville and Mississauga.

"Our goal at the federal level is to ensure that the market research bears out the location," he said.

Football / Standard of Play
« on: April 01, 2005, 11:17:24 AM »
Fellahs, some comments here. Living in Toronto I have not had the opportunity to see any of the games that TnT have played for this World Cup campaign. The only thing that I can go by is the reports from the forum massive. It really gives a diverse perspective of the quality of the side and I had formed an opinion based on what I was reading that we just eh ready.
However, I was finally lucky enough to see the game against Costa Rica as it came on Fox Sportsworld yesterday and I have to admit that I was presently surprised.
I actually saw the team string together some decent passes, although at times I did see the long ball to no man's land coming from defence. I must say that I really like Silvio's midfield play. He was attacking, coming back to win tackles and his overall style of trying to get others involved. Yorke also impressed in that playing in midfield he held up the ball and his control is still on point. I also thought tha Carlos Edwards on the right was solid.
In defence Lawrence surprised me too because it sounded like he has been pulling stiones for a while now, and was particularly bad in the game against Guatemala, but he was solid in this game for the most part.
Stern to me put down a pile.
I thought that TnT had a real chance to pull out a three points for the win.
So my questions are:
1. Was this TnT's best game for the campaign thus far?
2. Did Costa Rica play below their standards?
3. Do we have the talent to get us to Germany?
