Football / I'm Not Hearing You
« on: March 24, 2012, 06:12:43 AM »
Fellas should celebrate - they fought bravely. But what does this game tell about our state of our football? The gap is closing? I say no! I prefer to see good play and loose 3 nil in a game like this. I long for the day to see our footballers actually string 8 or 9 passes consistently in a game. Right now our results against decent opposition depends on much luck and hope opposition have an off day. Hate to admit it but Jamaica shape much better than us for the last few years and can actually put decent teams under sustained pressure.

Breds this core team beat Jamaica every single time they played them since U-17, including beating them in Jamaica to qualify for 2007 World Cup . This is the most successful team we have ever had, but they are not even the most talented squad in the last 5 years. Is hard work and a little care from the federation put them here. The only thing missing from that equation now is the attention of the federation.

If people really wanted to see good results they would pay a lot more attention to youth football. I does harp on this until I'm blue in the face. Watch what we have coming up in U-17 football in Trinidad, a real golden generation, a crop of some real strong players, who should be the target of enhanced training and peer group competition. But they getting NOTHING from this federation. Then in about a year or two time men will come and talk about how we players can't string passes together, they shitty, etc.

People talk about  'gap' opening and closing like is some kind of magic portal. Its we the footballing community who open the gap by sheer force of will and committment. And its we who let it close on us when we lazy. It doh open and close itself.

By the time men seeing a T&T side consistently getting licks against good opposotion, there is no more point complaining, the window of opprtunity done pass years ago.

I will continue to celebrate this side win loose or draw because they stand for what happens when we do things right from the beginning.

The ultimate goal of any country's football programme is to produce teams that can consistently contend and qualify for places in the world cup. There's no doubt that this team has been very successful in the past and has a few sparkling talents but I feel that they have not developed as a team as I had hoped - no fault of theirs. I agree that the money and focus of our programme needs to be expended on youth development and that the TTFF must accept most blame for the very inconsistent results we have been having. Let's see in the Olympic Qualifiers, when all teams are at their best, if we still beat the teams that we did in the younger age groups.I hope we do! I love T&T football and would watch them play on TV over Manu, Barca etc. but what would have been the comments if the score was 4-1, as it easily could have been on another day. I have commented in the past and I have noticed this a lot with posters in this forum, you only look at the result to determine how well our team plays.

I was totally disheartened once more by T&T's performance last night v Mexico but not surprised. When I spoke about the team's lack of technical and tactical ability last year in the PanAm Games men want to bite off meh head. All they looked at was the scoreline and not the standard of play and in particular the inability to perform even the basics. Wish the guys all the best in their remaining games.

Football / Skill Development in T&T
« on: March 31, 2011, 08:38:48 AM »
I'm focusing on specifically dribbling skills. Where has it gone? I can think about Dwarika, Terry 'Jughead' St. Louis, young Yorke, Latas, Nixon to name a few who have entertained us and used their individual skill to unlock opposition defenses. When I look at our national teams today, there seems to be no one who can fit into that mold. While I must admit that our national teams play with more structure than what I have seen in the past (albeit at a very slow pace), we lack greatly the spontaneity and  creativity that individual brilliance brings. We know that the talent is there because we see it in our players at the infant stages of their careers but as they develop they seem to just lose it. Rahim, Britto, Winchester (to a lesser extent) to name a few. Is it the method of coaching involved, too much emphasis on organizational play and little time spent on free play? You coaches out there might have the answers.

I believe that the truly great dribblers are not coached into that but develop their skills in their formative years through open, free play. Are our young footballers still playing small post or some version of it? I believe there is a need and a place for it just as many Brazilians develop their skills on the streets.  Excellent dribbling skills are not coached but developed through exposure and encouragement at embryonic stages.

Golden Jaguars and Soca Warriors set for September 26 showdown
Starbroek News

The matches between Guyana’s Golden Jaguars and Trinidad’s Soca Warriors and Guyana’s Under-20 and Trinidad’s Junior Warriors will take place at the Guyana National Stadium.

Yesterday, the Directors of the organization, Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major along with President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Colin Klass held a press briefing to inform the public what steps have been taken so far in putting together the event.

In Muhammad’s brief remarks he said that over the next few weeks their organization will be embarking on an ‘emotional journey’ to let the Guyanese public know who the players are that will be representing them.

“The GFF supports the venture they have come up with and I think this also is a way to see where Guyana is on the international stage. It will be a lot of work to complete in a short space of time in preparation but we will be ready since we are not prepared to lose at home,” said GFF president Colin Klass.

“I believe the way for our football to develop is having international exposure … to compete and derive the best possible team to represent us at a higher level,” he further said.

The competition, he said, was timely since Guyana’s football season has recently resumed and it will better help in the preparation for the upcoming Digicel Cup and other international competitions.

Klass also disclosed that they are working towards turning the September 26 event into a triple header and are awaiting confirmation from a Surinamese National Under-17 squad to oppose another junior Jags team.

The long-standing GFF president also said that a number of overseas-based Guyanese players will be arriving in Guyana to join the local players in the squad to represent their country.

They include Christopher Bourne, Walter Moore, Howard Newton, JP Rodrigues, Alinani Mounter, Shawn `Bubbly’ Beveney, Fabian Brown, Chris Nurse, Sean Cameron, Jake Newton, Ricky Shakes, Jason Lloyd,  Gregory Richardson and Gamaal Breedy.

What more is there for us to gain from these games?

Football / T&T vs Costa Rica Players Performances.
« on: June 06, 2009, 06:20:06 PM »
Ince - Solid..defence let him down. (8 )
Dog, Tallest - Too many lapses for this level. Cost us this game. (5)
Avery - Very solid defensively as usual. Not much going forward. We can accept that.(8 )
Carlos - Decent performance but still needs to work alot on crossing.(8.5)
Noel - Really impressed with him. Workrate, hustle, outstanding but needs to improve finishing.(8 )
Yorke - Average...thought he would have been substituted midway second half for Hyland(6.5)
Spann - Very solid game. Started to look like Spann of last campaign. Good hustle, distribution. Opts to shoot to quickly sometimes when better options are available. Should not have been substituted.(8 )
Jones - Worked very hard but still a bit off top form. Was very involved.(7.5)
Scotland - Missed him for the whole first half. Has to link up better with Jones and midfielders. I would have started with Glen.(4)
Tinto - Shows talent but not up to this level as yet to start (based on this performance). I would try him off the bench. (5)
Birchal - Did not do much during time on field.
Glen - Provided something different on top but long ball being played did not suit his game.
Samuel - Decent showing and well taken chance on goal.
Stern - I think we missed him alot with the no. of chances we had ... proven finisher

Football / Lucky Connection.
« on: February 13, 2007, 09:44:25 PM »
I attended the game and i must say this was one of the most one sided games I've seen for a long while.  Chivas totally dominated the game and should have won comfortably. The level of their passing game was a sight to behold. So much so that for much of the second half even though Connection were only one goal down, they seemed resigned to accept defeat to a better side. They chased shadows for most of the game and seemed clueless about making a few consecutive passes much less threaten the Chivas goal. Trinidad football is just not ready for that high level of football. Pacheco, Toussaint and most of the Connection teamed looked dam shitty. I also attended their game against the Hatian club in which these players looked liked great prospects. It just shows the gulf between the level of football.

That said, it's goals that win matches and Connection's best player Earl Jean got one and Seabra also. Seabra, even though much too slow still has better touches than most of the other Connection players. Connection was very very lucky and can only hope that lightning strikes twice in Mexico. There is simply nothing to compare - it's boys against men.

Don't let the result fool you, our football has a long long way to go. It looked worst than the T&T vs C.R. game ( ten men or not).

Football / Ezra Stuart & Barbados Sore Losers
« on: January 19, 2007, 07:40:40 PM »
This is an excerpt from article in Barbados Nation.

Favouring

At the post-match media conference, Martinique coach Guy Michel Nisas charged that the officiating was unfair and even accused sponsors Digicel of favouring Haiti because of their association with them as well as the host country.

"I feel sorry because 'we were not able to be on level terms. We don't think it was fair to us.

"Some of the calls were not good and we suffered because of it," an angry Nisas charged.

"Maybe, we will have 'a better chance against Barbados because they 'are not the host team 'and they are not Haiti," 'he added.

Officials

The officiating in the finals has come under fire from both Martinique and Barbados, with the presence of Trinidadian officials doing duties in the Sedley Joseph Group being questioned.

Barbados midfielder John Hawkesworth was controversially sent off 'by Moreno in their opening match.

Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti qualified for tomorrow's semi-finals from the group, with Martinique finishing third on three points and Barbados fourth 'on one point.

I went to all three of warriors' games. While the officiating might not have been to the highest standard, I saw absolutely no bias. These teams are looking for excuses for their performances. Martinique has a good side and would have tested T&T were it not for the sending off. When they had 11, they pressed Trinidad, not allowing our defence to knock the ball around (Just had to clear up field). T&T did not look good with as much as six or seven opposing players pressing us high up. Barbados on the other hand is a poor team that does not have a brand. They have some talented players but no clear organisation. If anything can be said of the officiating is that it tended to favour them especially in the Martinique game.

If Cuba presses and hustles Trinidad, especially early on, I believe we would be under heavy pressure to withstand it. Must mention that while Jemmot has excellent touch and good passiing, he is much too slow for international ball. He can get away with it at this level but he must work on his general fitness. This explains why his performances game to game and within a game are so inconsistent.

T&T standouts: Telesford, Roberts, Glasgow*, Theobald, Tiger, Baptiste and Daniel.

*while Glasgow misses many chances, his movement, work rate and comibining with other players is excellent. I have not seen such a mobile attack from Trinidad for some time now(Glasgow, Roberts,Tiger, Baptiste.)
