Football / Classic Match Thread
« on: June 05, 2020, 01:29:15 PM »
I tried to find an old thread for something like this, but couldn't.  This group out of Antigua have been broadcasting classic matches from their island, and will broadcast a match from the 2000 CFU Club Championship qualifying stages, Empire (Antigua) v. W Connection, on Monday.

https://www.facebook.com/Sportsy268/posts/131136878588321

I have enjoyed their content so far, definitely an interesting trip down memory lane.  If anyone has any classic T&T or Pro League matches, please share them here.

Four 2006 Warriors selected for Belize, Peru friendlies
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

The Trinidad and Tobago national football team should not lack know-how for its two upcoming friendly internationals against Belize on March 22 and away to Peru on March 26 after picking a relatively experienced 18-man squad today.

Four 2006 World Cup players got the nod from the technical staff, which is led by joint head coaches Hutson “Barber” Charles and Jamaal Shabazz, as the team continues its preparations for the July 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States.

Tickets go on sale from Thursday at all Sports and Games outlets for $100 while children under 16-years-old are free.

Stoke City forward Kenwyne Jones, North East Stars striker Cornell Glen, Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA playmaker Densill Theobald and Port Vale midfielder Chris Birchall are included and all represented the “Soca Warriors” at the FIFA showcase tournament in Germany, seven years ago.

Quote
Sir David Attenborough, the famed British naturalist and television presenter, has some harsh words for humanity.

"We are a plague on the Earth," Attenborough told the Radio Times, as reported by the Telegraph. "It's coming home to roost over the next 50 years or so."

Attenborough went on to say that both climate change and "sheer space" were looming problems for humanity.

"Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us, and the natural world is doing it for us right now," he said.

Attenborough is not the only naturalist who has warned of population growth outstripping resources. Paul Ehrlich, the president of the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford University and author of "The Population Bomb" (Sierra Club-Ballantine, 1968) has long used language similar to Attenborough's. And in 2011, an analysis of species loss suggested that humans are beginning to cause a mass extinction on the order of the one that killed the dinosaurs.

When asked about Attenborough's comments on humanity as its own scourge, Ehrlich told LiveScience he "completely agree(d), as does every other scientist who understands the situation." [ Top 10 Ways to Destroy Earth ]

Even so, that doesn't mean forceful measures must be taken. "Government propaganda, taxes, giving every sexually active human being access to modern contraception and backup abortion, and, especially, giving women absolutely equal rights and opportunities with men might very well get the global population shrinkage required if a collapse is to be avoided," Ehrlich said.

Other scientists also agreed to some extent with the heart of Attenborough's message.

"It's clear that increasing population growth makes some of our biggest environmental challenges harder to solve, not easier," said from Jerry Karnas, population campaign director for the Center for Biological Diversity in Tucson, Ariz.

Karnas added, however, "What's needed is not population control but a real emphasis on reproductive rights, women's empowerment, universal access to birth control and education, so more freedom for folks to make better, more informed family planning choices."

And population numbers would matter less for the planet's health if clean renewable energy were widely adopted as well as planning laws, he told LiveScience during an interview.

Attenborough is famous for his "Life on Earth" series of wildlife documentaries, among other nature programming. In 2009, he became a patron of the Optimum Population Trust, a group that advocates voluntary population limitation. At the time, he released a statement saying, "I've seen wildlife under mounting human pressure all over the world and it's not just from human economy or technology — behind every threat is the frightening explosion in human numbers."

Earth's population reached 7 billion people on or around Oct. 31, 2011, according to United Nations estimates.

I've been saying this for years. If human beings were any other type of animal we would consider them beyond an infestation and be trying to cull them by the billions.

Guyana National Team Players want administrative personnel to resign
Caribbean Football Database

Editor's Note: The following is a press release from the players of the Guyanese national football team. This release comes on the heels of Guyana's participation in Group 6 of the Caribbean Cup. Prior to the playing of the matches in this round of the Caribbean Cup, it was revealed that a number of the team's players, including striker Gregory "Jackie Chan" Richardson, had declined to participate due to the fact that the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) only offered a $12 (USD) per day stipend while representing the national team. This coming only a month after the GFF had allowed their home World Cup Qualifier against Mexico to be played at a "neutral" venue (Houston, USA) while the team was still mathematically alive in Qualifying, and, allegedly, reaping a large sum of money from this move.

As players who have made tremendous sacrifices to represent Guyana we feel that the time has come for changes in the executive of the Guyana Football Federation. Two paid personnel Noel Adonis and George Rutherford are responsible for the stagnation of the game in Guyana. They have shown gross incompetence in their secretarial duties, causing players to lose their jobs and risk their contracts. They are totally disconnected from the modern game and the administrative needs of modern football and are like leeches on the GFF not to mention the huge sums of money they receive for being incompetent. They have no understanding of what is required for success from a performance perspective neither from a administrative perspective in todays game.

Aubrey Major is the hardest working member of the GFF EXCO and has demonstrated a commitment to taking the game to another level, but his efforts and all reach to nought because of the incompetence of these two men. As players we met with four members of the GFF EXCO in Houston Texas prior to the Mexico game. The players refused to play the game based on numerous issues, a written agreement was reached enable the fixture to commence, however behind our backs Mr Adonis and Rutherford vetoed the agreement with little regard for how it will look in terms of their integrity and decency as men.

Senior men to start Caribbean Cup qualifiers vs Anguilla.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior men’s team will begin their qualification for the 2012 Caribbean Football Union Cup against Anguilla at Warner Park, St Kitts/Nevis on October 10, 2012.

This was revealed in an advisory from the Caribbean Football Union on Monday. Initially the qualifying group was scheduled for September but a change has come about which would now have the matches played between October 10-15 which are FIFA match dates.

French Guiana has replaced St Martin. T&T will also face French Guiana on October 12 and St Kitts/Nevis two days later.

The group winner will advance to round two in Cuba from which two teams will advance to the Caribbean Cup Finals in Antigua later this year. Only defending champions Jamaica and hosts Antigua are already through to the eight-nation Finals.

The Caribbean Cup serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup with the teams vying for four spots out of the Caribbean.

T&T interim head coach Hutson Charles will be monitoring the progress of the home-based players at the start of the TT Pro League next month and will also consider his options involving some of T&T’s overseas-based pros.

“The dates have been pushed back because initially we were expecting this tournament to be played in September. It means we have a few extra days but still our preparation will remain on stream because these matches are important for the team to be able to come together more as a unit as we look ahead to the later matches,” Charles told TTFF Media.

“We need to get past this first round by topping the group. Getting to the CONCACAF Gold Cup is big on our agenda at this stage,” Charles added. T&T will play a friendly away to Puerto Rico in September.

Football / Aubrey David pulled a Ricky Shakes?
« on: May 18, 2012, 07:08:29 PM »
Aubrey David came on as a sub for T&T against Antigua and Barbuda back in February but now it appears he is playing for Guyana (at least according to Jamaican commentators who could be wrong I suppose).

Anyone else hear about this?

EDIT: Seems pretty certain, two different commentary teams said it was him and he was apparently a big defender which fits the profile.

Football / Birchall offers help to Vale
« on: February 17, 2012, 10:45:16 PM »
Boss: Birchall deal not done
By: Sky Sports

Port Vale boss Micky Adams insists reports the club have re-signed Chris Birchall are premature.

It was reported on Thursday that the former Vale midfielder had returned to Staffordshire to link back up with the League Two outfit.

However, while admitting he is hopeful of signing Birchall following his release by LA Galaxy, Adams has revealed talks over a proposed month-by-month deal are yet to be completed.

Adams told Vale's official website: "I was surprised to read Chris Birchall had signed because international clearance has not arrived and we are still to sort some other issues.

"I also smiled to myself when I saw he was playing for free - because you don't get anything for free in football.

"Hopefully we can get something completed but we aren't there yet."

Birchall offers help to Vale
Winger says he is prepared to play for free under Adams (Sky Sports)

Chris Birchall says he is prepared to play for free in order to help out former club Port Vale on a short-term basis.

The winger is training with Vale following his departure from the Los Angeles Galaxy and the League Two club are ready to hand the 27-year-old a month-to-month deal.

Birchall, who made over 90 appearances for Vale before leaving for Coventry City in 2006, is willing to offer his services to manager Micky Adams for nothing.

"I've got a few things in the pipeline and one of those may happen in April or May," Birchall told The Sentinel.

"I spoke to Micky Adams and said that if he needs my services until then I'd be more than happy to help out.

"I'd play for free because I live locally, it would keep me fit and the club means a lot to me. But it's about whether Micky thinks I'd benefit the team.

"We have a good relationship because I played under him at Coventry and Brighton. I would only do this for him.

"I don't like to see the club struggle in terms of a lack of bodies and finances so if I can help, I will."
